It’s been over a month since we dropped an Atlanta Falcons related episode of Bird Brehs and naturally a lot has transpired.

AD, Rome, Trent, and guest co-host Justin (@JCity123 on Twitter) broke down all the happenings with the team and gave their predictions for the upcoming draft and remainder of free agency.

To start off, we discussed the release of Roddy White and Marquand Manuel’s interview question at the Combine to Ohio State DB Eli Apple. We also looked at the Falcons free agent signings thus far and how the salary breakdown affects team flexibility moving forward.

What will the Front 7 look like? We talked the possibility of the Falcons signing Rams free agents, James Laurinaitis and Chris Long.

To finish up we discuss some draft prospects, a few more free agents and the Falcons draft strategy. Will they go heavy defense? Trade down in the 1st round?

AD flew solo again for this week’s Behind Enemy Lines episode for the Colts game. Nestled in the preview talk, he named the Colts player he’s most afraid of, a brief breakdown of their squad, and keys to a Falcons victory. This was a debate filled episode of Bird Brehs. Rome, AV, and Tee Little discussed everything except politics and global warming. We began the episode keying in on players returning from injury who would make the biggest impact coming off the bye week. Then there was Behind Enemy Lines, as we talked about Cam Newton, dabbin’, and if the criticism is warranted. AV gave us his reason why the Saints suck. Spoiler alert: Rob Ryan is involved. There was also over/under stat predictions, 2nd Half previews, and hypothetical talk about Matt Ryan’s future.

It’s been a familiar theme for New Orleans this season so stop me if you’ve heard this already, but The Saints are struggling again on defense. Check out this report from NOLA.com:

“Through nine games, the Saints defense is allowing about 6.5 yards per play, the second-worst mark in post-merger NFL history, according to Pro Football Reference. The only team to do worse through the opening nine games? The 2012 Saints.”

The Saints are also last in Football Outsider’s Defense-Adjusted Value over Average. This year’s numbers are worse than the 2014 Saints and 2012 Saints. It’s obvious the Saints proudly embrace their storied history of defensive failure and fortunately for us Falcons fans, it doesn’t look like it’ll be getting any better for them anytime soon. And that Ladies & Gentleman, is reason #5,629 why the Saints suck!

Man, man, man, what can I say? I just got back from watching the game with fellow Bird Breh, AD. We gave our predictions in the weekly episode and rehashed them while taking in the 1st quarter. There were plenty of bright spots in this game, Julio (as always), the opportunistic defense, and even a guy I’ve talked trash about, Eric Weems.

However, there were way more head scratching moves than bright spots. From continuing to call stretch run plays when the 49ers quick LBs/safeties gobbled up Devonta Freeman to the non existent pass rush, to Matt Ryan locking in on Julio. There were plenty times I turned to AD and asked, “Why are we doing [insert dumb decision here]?” I’ve come to live a question-filled life as an Atlanta sports fan, so it’s nothing new.

When we wake up tomorrow and read articles or hear discussion about the game the Falcons last offensive possession, which resulted in a FG will be the most heavily scrutinized decision. “Should Dan Quinn have went for it on 4th down?” Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time I said “yes.” In the event you don’t score, you still have 2 timeouts with Blaine Gabbert leading his troops from the shadow of his own goalposts. In that situation, I have full faith in the defense, time and field position was on our side. Down one point, having to make a stop to get the ball back, AND having to get points, I’m not as confident.

Sitting at 6-3 heading into the bye week, I’m optimistic the staff and players will make the necessary changes to win enough games for a playoff berth. What happens once we get there remains to be seen…

Rome and AD hold down the episode as they briefly recapped the Falcons 23-20 loss to Tampa Bay game and went Behind Enemy Lines for the 49ers.

AD was in the Dome for the game and gave three things he learned based on the team’s performance.

The last segment featured Rome and AD discussing how the 49ers new starter at QB, Blaine Gabbert, will look against the Falcons defense. To finish it up, AD gave his predictions based on Vegas Lines. So if you’re a bettor, you might want to listen in!

Reason #978 why the Saints suck takes us back to Sunday’s high scoring affair down in New Orleans, where the Saints beat the Giants 52-49, a game in which Eli Manning and Drew Brees combined to throw 13 TD passes. The Saints allowed 49 points in the win, which ties for the most points allowed in a win in NFL history, tying the 52-49 score from the Houston Oilers vs. Oakland Raiders game way back on December 22, 1963.

And that is Reason #978 why the Saints SUCK!

Rome, Trent, and AD looked back on the sloppy Week 7 win over the Titans and identified some key areas of concern. There was also more praise of the NFL’s leading rusher Devonta Freeman, suggestions for a new punt returner, and debate about offensive playcalling.

In the final segment, AD and Rome previewed the matchup with the 2-4 Tampa Bay Bucs.

Houston secondary vs. Julio Jones

It’s no secret that the key to the Atlanta Falcons offense this season has been WR Julio Jones, who through three games is off to a historic start with 34 catches for 440 yards and 4 TDS. For the Texans to win, they have to have great play from their trio of corner-backs Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson and Kevin Johnson. Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan likes to move Julio around the field on offense so look for Julio to lineup inside or outside or maybe even out of the backfield. Houston’s corner-backs will also have to contend with WRs Leonard Hankerson and Roddy White as the Falcons look to move to 4-0 for the first time since 2012 when they started the season 8-0.

Rome Brown says:

Kevin Johnson vs. Julio Jones

A key match-up will be Julio Jones vs. rookie CB Kevin Johnson. Julio has 34 catches, which is an NFL record through three games. Johnson along with the other Texans DBs have played well this season, but haven’t faced a QB/WR duo like Matt Ryan and Julio Jones yet, so I look forward to a another dominating performance from Julio.
Prediction: 11 catches, 149 yard, 2TDs

Texans RBs vs. Falcons Tackling

Last week, the Cowboys hopped out to an early lead thanks to some terrible tackling. On their first TD run, Joseph Randle was hit a couple yards behind the line and was able to break down the field. We stepped up in the 2nd half, but with Alfred Blue coming off a 131 yards rushing and Arian Foster making his season debut, we cannot have a relapse back into the poor form we displayed in the first half last Sunday.

DeAndre Hopkins vs. Desmond Trufant

It didn’t take long for Desmond Trufant to receive the Richard Sherman treatment.  So far in 2015, Trufant has been targeted a total of seven times by opposing quarterbacks. Of those seven attempts, Trufant has allowed three receptions. Trufant will face his first test of the season matching up against another young NFL talent, DeAndre Hopkins. With Foster’s status not yet confirmed, Hopkins is the most dangerous player on the Houston Texans offense.

We were without a fan from behind Texans lines, but AD and Rome held down this week’s edition of Behind Enemy Lines. They discussed the key matchups, exploiting Ryan Mallett, and the importance of having the home crowd engaged during the game.

There’s been much praise for the Falcons improved pass rush and defense so far this year, but this will be their biggest test thus far. The Cowboys offensive line is regarded as the best in the NFL, boasting 3 All-Pros and are anchored by $110 million left tackle, Tyron Smith. If the Falcons want to win they have to stifle the run and constantly pressure Brandon Weeden.

Dallas’ Interior OL vs. Atlanta’s DTs
If the Cowboys offensive line has any weak point, it would be at Left Guard. Mackenzy Bernadeau had a PFF run grade of -3.2 and was replaced with rookie La’el Collins in spots during the game. Soliai and Hageman must use this to their advantage to stuff the run game. Babs, Clayborn, and Jarrett must also collapse the pocket due to the tough day Beasley is facing against Pro Bowl OT Tyron Smith.

Jacob Tamme vs. Sean Lee
Jacob Tamme is no Tony Gonzalez but in last week’s 24-20 win against the NY Giants he gave Falcons fans a glimpse of the Gonzalez glory days. Tamme was targeted on 7 different occasions, resulting in 4 receptions for 77 yards. Matt Ryan’s security blanket will need a repeat performance as he is matched up with one of the best linebackers in the league and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Week, Sean Lee. Since 2010, Lee leads all linebackers with the most interceptions in the league with 12 interceptions.

In this Behind Enemy Lines edition of Bird Brehs, Rome and AD were joined by Dallas Cowboys fan, Dre. Dre goes by Primetime21 on thecoli.com message board and previewed this Sunday’s game from a Cowboys perspective. He gave insight on the team’s defense, offensive line, and what it’ll take for Brandon Weeden to succeed. In addition to predictions, AD and Dre named their two key players of the game.
