In the final workshop of our series, you’ll create your very own Regency Gown… just in time for the Mt. Dora Jane Austen Fest in February! The “round gown” is a very versatile garment that can be adapted for a day dress or elegant evening gown. You’ll work hands-on with Regency expert and pattern creator Jennie Chancey to design and fit your gown, as well as instructor Audrey Russell to guide you through construction. Your workshop includes the Sense & Sensibility Elegant Lady’s Closet pattern, which contains options for additional dress styles, sleeves and accessories (not covered in class). *Regency undergarments are strongly recommended to get the correct fit and “look” for your gown. If you have a chemise, stays, and/or petticoat, please bring them for proper fitting.

We kicked off our fun Thursday night with a fashion show where I dressed Audrey in all her layers (she started in chemise, drawers, stockings, and shoes). Through this process, we were able to demonstrate what an amazing difference correct underpinnings make for this time period. Our capable assistant, Leah, herself a gifted seamstress and Regency aficionado, also came dressed for our demonstration and showcased her own work, which was splendid.

The next day started at 10am, as we measured students to determine which size would suit them best, watched them cut their fitting toiles, baste those together, then try them on for a fitting critique. This took the most time but was also the most important step, as we were able to make pattern alterations on the fly to fit every body type from a size 2A to a 28G. There is NO body type that “won’t work” for this time period—it’s all a matter of fitting the wearer’s unique shape. Usually, all it takes to fit cup sizes over DD is adding length to the pattern pieces and lengthening the gussets, which is very easy to do, as you can see in the image below at right.

After test-fitting and making any needed tweaks, the ladies cut into their fashion fabrics and began to sew like busy bees. It was wonderful to see their progress over the two days we were together! I also loved all the fun fabrics they chose to use for their stays.

I always love getting together with fellow sewing enthusiasts, because I learn new things from them. Audrey taught us a couple of tricks I’d never seen in 40 years of sewing, and it was a blast to try them out. By the end of day two, most of our students had finished or nearly finished their stays, and everyone finished up within the next week at home. I had emails from a couple of students who wanted second opinions on fitting tweaks, and we were able to work through those remotely with beautiful results. I am so proud of these ladies!

Audrey and I will be back at The Sewing Studio next January to co-teach the drawstring gown (“round gown” in the terms of the time) from my Elegant Lady’s Closet pattern. One of our goals for this demonstration was to show the importance of correct underpinnings for Regency gowns. Audrey made a beautiful spotted muslin day dress, and we photographed her wearing it with a modern bra (left two images) and correct chemise and stays (right two photos). Vive la difference!

After this demonstration of women’s clothing, I brought my husband up, looking like a rather bedraggled “Mr. Martin,” and gave him a makeover into a dapper “Darcy” ready to attend a ball. I had a lot of fun sharing some of the funnier spoofs of men’s fashion drawn for the periodicals of the day as well:

The entire weekend was an absolute blast. February in central Florida is simply ideal, and Mt. Dora is incredibly charming and worth the visit. We enjoyed walking all over in our Regency outfits, taking afternoon tea at a beautiful historical house, and even getting scared to death by the Orlando Bush Man!

The festival concluded with a grand masked ball, including a fantastic Regency photo booth just begging for poses.

We had a fabulous time and highly recommend this delightful festival for both Jane Austen fans and Regency fashion enthusiasts as well. Turns out that, when I shifted from Wordpress to Squarespace, a lot of image galleries didn’t transfer correctly, leaving dozens of posts with broken bits of code instead of photos. My “Titanic” photos have been missing for years, I suppose, but I never realized it. I decided to take the time to fix that original sewing diary, along with all the posts of others who reproduced “Titanic” costumes around the same time. What a trip into the past! I had forgotten so much about the process of making those two gowns—and the insane media storm they created from USA Today to the LA Times to Access Hollywood.

Sewing for others was such a joy when I first started out, and producing patterns so others could sew for themselves was the next natural step. I have always been SO proud of what my customers create. They’ve been stitching and reproducing fashions from so many eras LONG before the days of “cosplay” and “influencers.” I thought it would be fun to bring those back to the front page of the site today, and I’ve posted links below to the main galleries from that time period. Keep in mind we were all using rudimentary cameras and didn’t have access to anything remotely “high res.” But, oh, we had fun!

It takes me a while to reformat each class, but I have already moved the Regency Gown Class over, and it is up and running in the private Member Area. I’m working my way steadily through the other classes and will announce each one as I get it up and running. (If you are currently a student in a class on the old platform, never fear! You still have access to your lessons, and those won’t go away. I’m just not taking new signups over there.)

To enroll in a class, just pop over to the Classes page under the Shop menu, and you’ll find the signup buttons at the bottom. The Regency Gown Class is the only one there now, but bookmark the page to check back as I finish adding the others!

I used the Romantic Era Dress pattern, and linen fabric, both of which were a dream to sew. The only modifications I made were to add gathers to the neckline and take a little fullness out of the sleeve. It was a breeze to make, and was exactly the right balance of feeling both very special and very easy to wear.

Your Romantic Era Dress pattern has been my tried and true go to since I was 15, and it was exactly what I wanted for my dress.

I really enjoyed the sewing class I took with Jennie to make this 2-piece ensemble. I made the underdress out of tissue silk and the overdress out of embroidered organdy. She helped me pick out the fabrics online, explaining what they were known for and how it might look. She offered pointers whenever I was uncertain. Without her help I would not have completed this ensemble, and could never have afforded to have it sewn for me by a seamstress who does precision sewing.

I made a red gown to go underneath the white overlay that I made over the fall. I also made a cape to go with my outfits. I've included a Christmas Ensemble that I wore to a living history museum where I was volunteering.

I’ve also updated the ePattern Instructions, since the new tiles are far easier to put together (and work on both Letter and A4 formats without any extra work on the user’s end). I’ll upload a new tutorial to the blog as soon as possible to demonstrate the tiling process.

Thank you so much for your patience during this process. Some of you know this has been in the works for quite a while, and you’ve been so kind and accommodating. I also couldn’t have gotten these done without the help of a dear friend who is a fellow pattern designer and Adobe Illustrator ace, so many thanks to her for her time and expertise. She’s too modest to let me shout her out, but she knows I think she is a gem!

Yes, it has been a very long time since I have checked in, but I’m still here, still sewing on occasion, and still answering customer questions, running online classes, and wearing historically inspired creations as often as possible in everyday life. But when the world shut down and ended in-person costume events, I knew things were going to change for my business. I also quit my Instagram account in 2020 when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and what I’ve been doing in real life has kept me super occupied for a very long stretch.

Our family moved back to my husband’s hometown in 2020, purchasing a 1906 house in need of TLC. That kept us happily occupied for months, painting, repairing old windows, and planting English roses all along the picket fence.

We thoroughly enjoyed being within walking distance of our adorable downtown but lamented that there wasn’t a coffee or tea shop. Our oldest children, one of whom had worked as a barista for two years, all began hatching a plan to open one ourselves, calculating a budget, looking for a space to put it, and researching equipment, business regulations, taxes, and more. Within a couple of months, the perfect space opened up for rent just five blocks from us in what used to be the post office 100 years ago. And the most amazing touch of serendipity? My husband’s great-grandfather was the postmaster way back then, so we even had a family connection to the building! We signed a lease and immediately started raising funds for the build-out and equipment, and I was blown away to find a 1920s counter at an estate sale from a general store 45 minutes up the road. The counter was exactly the right size for the space and fit through the doorway, which was just incredible. I spent a week refinishing it to make sure its surface was food-grade for the health department’s inspection, and the entire family pitched in to help get the space ready for a free tasting to get the word out that a coffee shop was finally coming to downtown.

We were determined to keep everything as locally sourced as possible, and we were excited to find a coffee roaster just down the road from us who really knew his coffee (one whiff of his roastery, and we knew we’d found our coffee beans!). Our first open house “test tasting” was a huge success, complete with live music and delicious baked goodies.

By September of 2021, we had everything in place, passed our inspections, trained the staff, and were ready for our grand opening. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to open a European-style coffee and tea shop, incorporating all the things we’ve loved in our travels around Europe and Africa, both of which have incredibly strong café cultures. We wanted our customers to feel relaxed and welcome to stay from the start, and it has been ten months of joy as the entire family has worked together to create a hospitable and warm environment—and serve awesome coffees and teas!

Another delightful facet of this new venture has been hosting “high tea” with our local tea blending expert (who does all of our loose leaf teas and has her own shop on Main Street). We also held a bouquet workshop with a nearby florist who grows her own flowers and loved watching the creativity flow.

And, nope, I haven’t left sewing and costuming behind! For our first Halloween weekend, we chose a “Back to the Future” theme, which was a hoot. On May the 4th, we did Star Wars Day and encouraged customers to come dressed up as well.

But, by far, the most fun I’ve had with costuming in the past two years was for our town’s Spring Fest this April, when our community decided to host its first ever Easter Hat Parade. Contestants decorated their own hats, there was a contest for the various age categories, and we all got to strut our stuff down Main Street. It was such a blast that we are already planning hat workshops for next year. I didn’t have much time to prep my own hat (and I didn’t compete), but I have big ideas for the next go-around!

As you can see, we have kept ourselves thoroughly occupied over the past two years. I’ve made dresses for myself and my girls, I’ve altered some vintage clothes found at estate sales, and I taught one of my twins to sew when he wanted to make his own tabard for a medieval SCA event nearby (he did a great job!).

My two youngest daughters are now champing at the bit to learn, so we will be starting with circle skirts this summer. I made myself another Dior Palais de Glacé dress from the silk rayon I got in Paris in 2019, and one of these days I really will finish that blog series and show the final dress I wore on that trip!

I also turned 50 this year, and my husband surprised me (understatement of the year) by flying our oldest son and his wife here for a visit after lockdowns had kept them in South Africa for so long. It was a glorious way to celebrate half a century, and we had so much fun together. Ruby, who is a trained barista, even got to hang with us at the coffee shop and teach latte art!

Sense & Sensibility Patterns isn’t going anywhere, though I put the brakes on new patterns and videos while we focused on our local endeavors. My next big MUST-DO project is updating all ePatterns to both tiled and large-format to accommodate all printing options, since many customers have reported that Adobe’s Poster Print feature no longer functions on certain platforms (so sorry!). A dear friend in the costuming community has shared her know-how with Adobe Illustrator, and I’m planning to set aside the last week in July to blaze through all the pattern sheets and get them done. If you already own an older version, you’ll be able to request the updated ePattern as soon as those go online.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding during the whirlwind of the past two and a half years. Your kind emails and snail mail have been so encouraging, especially as my mom battled cancer (and won!). I always say I have the best customers in the world, and I honestly believe it.

Hello, my dear! I hope you and yours are doing well. I thought you'd be interested to know the inspiration finally struck and I finished my 1950s shirtwaist dress from your pattern. Fashionably late as usual! I don't know why I deliberated over the buttons so long (4-5 years!), when mother of pearl are clearly perfect! I'm loving how this turned out! The 14 fits comfortably even though I've gained a few. Hurrah! Time to start another one, I suppose. I'd love to see how it makes up in lawn with a flatlined bodice and shirred skirt.

I chuckled, because I basically live under a rock when it comes to modern fashion trends, but I had, indeed, noticed a surge in pattern sales over the past few months and hadn’t pinned it down until I checked my site’s search terms dashboard. Interesting.

“Regency gowns” and “Jane Austen dresses” were not a surprise, but the sheer number of variations on “how to make a Regency costume” and “how to dress like a Regency character” blew me away. I didn’t see anything for “Regencycore,” but a separate online search confirmed that this term has joined the ranks of “Cottagecore,” “Dark Academia,” and other fun trends that have crossed my radar in the past year. It seems lockdowns and YouTube tutorial binging have unlocked a whole new level when it comes to creating beautiful outfits that click with the wearer’s personality and just say, “This is me!”

After living most of my teenage years in Edwardian-style dresses, long petticoats, and granny boots, I fell head over heels for Regency fashions when I hit my early twenties (mid-90s, if you simply must know). That happened to be the same time I met my future husband, watched “Emma” in theaters, and got married. I found the Regency style simply perfect for comfy days at home and (surprise!) as maternity wear when I was pregnant with my first. Darlings, I was “Regencycore” before it was cool.

When I spoke with Tara Donaldson from WWD, I told her I found it delightful that the same styles that led me into starting my pattern line have now skyrocketed into the public interest again 25 years later…and for a whole new demographic. I couldn’t be happier, as I love to see a new generation finding joy in learning a new skill in the quest to create something unique to wear.

Whether you are an old hand at sewing or can barely thread a needle, giving historical sewing a try needn’t be scary. We all started somewhere—including me and many of the amazing men and women in this community who make their own clothing and clothing for others. If you’re dying to reproduce an outfit you’ve seen in a film adaptation, this is the time! There are a plethora of helpful tutorials online—I even have a bunch on my site and on YouTube. (If you want to go all the way and start with a proper corset, I recommend the excellent class over at Historical Sewing.) I absolutely love to help beginners get started. I’ve got a class for my Regency Gown pattern and am also available on my channel on the Telegram app if you’d like to reach out to chat. The bottom line is that you are surrounded by a veritable sea of eager enthusiasts and experienced sewists who can help you make those Regencycore dreams come true!

You don’t need a special event as an excuse to create a Regency or Regency-inspired outfit. Make something to wear just because it makes you happy and beams a bright light into the world. Heaven knows we can use all the beauty we can create these days. Regencycore is a welcome addition to the world of self-made fashion, and I can’t wait to see what you stitch up!

I’m very thankful that my mom taught me to sew when I was little. After she got me started, she encouraged me and gave me wonderful resources. Remember me? Yeah, it has been a long while. If you read my “November Catch-Up” post, then you know the second half of 2020 was basically a write-off. There was just no way to focus on any sewing or video projects with all the real life happenings in our family…and that was fine. I do not regret refocusing, which is something we all have to do from time to time.

Now that we’ve made it through the holidays and have had a chance to draw breath, I feel good about moving forward on several new projects. First off, I was approached by a fellow pattern designer about revamping my ePatterns to make them into layered PDFs (meaning you could print just one size at a time if you wanted to). Rebecca showed me an example she had made with my Edwardian Apron pattern, and I was just thrilled by the results. So, starting February 1, we are going to work through all of my patterns, beginning with the best-sellers and hoping to tackle one every six weeks or so. If you have already purchased an ePattern from me in the past, the newer version will be available to you free of charge (I just need proof of prior purchase). I’m very excited to finally “upgrade” the ePatterns to make them more user friendly!!

At the same time, I am finishing up the new sizes for the Regency Underthings and Girls’ Spencer Jacket/Pelisse patterns. This will correct fitting issues with the former (it runs a size large) and add larger sizes for pre-teen and teenage girls on the latter. Again—if you already own a copy of either pattern, you won’t need to buy the update all over again. My patterns come with a lifetime guarantee!

Correcting the Blog—an ongoing project…

I’m setting aside time to fix some issues with images in past blog posts that occurred when I moved from WordPress to Squarespace. I really appreciate those who have taken time to drop me links to posts with problems, because combing through 3,000+ posts/pages to find them isn’t easy! It’s not as simple as using a tool to find broken links, or it would go a lot faster. This involves old image galleries that didn’t convert, leaving a lot of posts without pictures. I’ll keep working through these as I locate them (and please keep sending URLs if you run across them—thanks!).

Social Media Hiatus…for now

If you followed me on Instagram, you’ll see that I shut down my account right before the TOS update on December 20. I’ve read all the arguments on either side, and it just boils down to me not being comfortable with the powers IG is taking. Several people mentioned that “they’ve already been doing this for a while,” but that argument doesn’t really sway me. If I found out my neighbor had been taking videos of me in the shower since last March, I wouldn’t just shrug my shoulders and say, “Oh, well…it’s already out there.” 😳

I know we live in a post-privacy world in many ways, but I don’t believe in just accepting that and not fighting back. I deleted FB Messenger when they made similar changes to their TOS. I deleted FB and WhatsApp, and now I’ve decided to stay off Instagram unless/until users are given back control of their own data, images, and camera controls. I do not judge anyone who chooses to stay—this is just where my comfort level ends.

So, that effectively puts me off all social media platforms except Pinterest right now. I have left my IG feed up as an archive but deleted the app from my devices. You can still view past posts in my IG feed on the front page of my website without having to login to IG to do it. I am looking into alternatives that are easy to use and don’t come with the same privacy concerns. Until I find something that seems workable, I will focus on my own blog here and my eNewsletter.
