"Trickery is the second instalment of essential black vinyl stuff from Manchester's only jazz band under 46 years of age, Kalima. Four songs - 12" diameter. Aural proof that jazz is still vital and relevant in 1985. Kalima had previously been known to those with ears to hear as The Swamp Children, who recorded the remarkable So Hot album way back in the mists of time. 1982 actually, and there weren't that many young bands playing Latin American influenced jazz roaming the streets that August."

This is an extract from a 1985 press release to promote the Fac 127 'Four Songs' 12" single by Kalima. This particular copy is from the Tony Wilson Collection at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester.

Factory catalogue number spotters should note the incorrect assignment of Fact 80 to 'So Hot' by Swamp Children. 'Alma Mater' by The Stockholm Monsters, the true Fact 80, had already been released in autumn 1984 so this must just be a typo.

A small but enthuastic crowd braved storms of biblical proportions to watch A Certain Ratio's gig last night at Dingwalls in Camden. As part of the Beat Happening series there was a short Q&A session with Martin Moscrop and Jez Kerr before the band took the stage. Clearly enjoying themselves, playing out of their skins and even engaging in fan-banter, the band took us through a revamped setlist which featured a well-balanced mix of the old and the new.

Good to see the other JC, David Cooper, Al Jarvis, Agent King, Iain and Bunny, Andy, Will from Reorder and Ceri Evans (ex-Swamp Children).

LTM are ringing in the New Year in style with two new releases: LTMCD 2381 Miranda Dali by Thick Pigeon and LTMCD 2364 So Hot by Swamp Children (formerly available as Fact 70). The latter comes with all new groovy artwork and includes extra tracks taken from the Fac 49 'Little Voices' 12" single. These releases are not yet in the shops yet, but are available from LTM direct (where Visa payments are now accepted).

Also, LTM will have the Revenge double CD - LTMCD 2375 One True Passion V2.0 - in stock on or about 12 January.

Later in the year, amongst other delights, watch out for a re-release of the Fact 165 Anna Domino album by Anna Domino, Crispy Ambulance's The Powder Blind Dream, The Royal Family and the Poor's Nocturnes, and a sequel to LTMCD 2377 Cool As Ice - The Be Music Productions called 'Twice As Nice'.
