Following on from our recent piece on Section 25's prolific spell of activity, we take a more detailed look at the band's most recent releases, re-releases and remixes from the past year or so, as well as a quick glance at their upcoming gigs, one of which might be of interest to Factory fans next year!

Dark Light CD/download

Released early 2013, Dark Light is the band's seventh studio album 'proper' and their first since 2009's Nature and Degree (also their first without founder Larry Cassidy). By turns forward-thinking with its electronics and feminine vocals, courtesy of Bethany and Jo, yet still harbouring attitude and awareness reminiscent of earlier material, DL comes decorated in a fresh new Peter Saville sleeve and heralds something of a new chapter in the band's history. My Outrage 7"

Perhaps the focal point of the band's pristine new album Dark Light was this sprightly pop nugget, selected for a Record Store Day release, back in April. Coupled with an otherwise unreleased instrumental called Hinterland, My Outrage came dressed in a variant of the smart Peter Saville sleeve designed for its bigger brother/sister. There may be a few copies left for a fiver - more details here

From The Hip vinyl

Summer 2012 saw a double vinyl issue appear on the resurrected Factory Records, dressed smartly in its original Peter Saville sleeve and sporting a sticker declaring the inclusion of a bonus 12". This extra slab of plastic includes the original Megamix version of Looking From a Hilltop from Fac 108 and a much-fancied remix of the same tune (re-titled as Another Hilltop) by New Order's Stephen Morris. A worthy reissue and well worth seeking out.

Love and Hate CD

Previously issued on CD by LTM, its newly refurbished cousin Factory Benelux dusted down this under-rated set by sprucing it up with some natty extras. As well as the main album re-assembled back into its original running order, you get both sides of Bad News Week (FAC 157), 'retro' mixes of Warhead and the previously unrecorded Boogie Beat and two tracks from the Factory Benelux EP, Crazy Wisdom. Buy it from FBN direct and you get an exclusive slipcase sleeve.

Split 12" with Stereograph

American electro stalwarts met Blackpool, er, electro stalwarts for this split coloured-vinyl 12" single, housed in a die-cut sleeve in a limited run of just 500 copies. Section 25's offerings were hard-to-find dubs of Colour Movement Sex and Violence and Inner Drive - you also get a download code to preserve your precious wax. There are still copies left at Phaneron Records direct for 10 bucks plus postage.

Invicta Max 10"

Expanding on the earlier 2011 download release on Hacienda Records, this clear-vinyl 10" on Minimal Maximal took the Invicta EP to the Max by adding two more titles to the running order, namely a double-whammy of remixes of the previously unrecorded Microgroove. Absolute Body Control lent their industrial chops for one version and very good it is too. Even rarer than the split Stereograph single, only 400 copies were pressed up. If you want a copy of MM011, you should try Daft Records in the first instance.

Eigengrau remix album

Following on from the band's own collection of reinterpreted favourites, this collection from Austria's Klanggalerie imprint featured third-party remixes of classics such as Dirty Disco, Beating Heart, Girls Don't Count and The Process, as well as adding another reworking of Looking From a Hilltop. A stellar cast of mainly electro or industrial remixers includes Cabaret Voltaire's Stephen Mallinder, Zoviet France, 23 Skidoo, Renaldo and the Loaf and Absolute Body Control. After reading the Flipside review, you should nip over to LTM to grab a copy - it's rather good.

The Post Romantic Empire album

Now this IS a grand project and no mistake. Both Vincent and Larry Cassidy can be heard on two atmospheric versions of Love Will Tear Us Apart - the former contributes drums to the first version while Larry's last ever recording, a spoken word recital of Ian Curtis' lyrics, has been interwoven with music provided by Peter Hook, Nat Wason (Haven, The Light) and Eliot Bates. The rest of the limited hand-produced vinyl-album includes equally expressive contributions by David Tibet, Annabella Lwin, Little Annie and several others. First up is the much-anticipated Machination Nation event at Islington Mill on 19 October. On the bill with S25 are AAAK, otherwise known as As Able As Kane, plus DJ slots from MC Tunes, Chewdisco and Mouseybrown. Nyam Nyam - Hope of Heaven + Singles

LTM presents a digitally remastered 18-track album by Hull's Nyam Nyam this November. The extended CD features all tracks from the original Situation Two album Hope of Heaven and EP The Architect together with both sides of their first 7" single and the extended 12" version of the Peter Hook-produced Factory Benelux single Fate plus a brand new track Doubt. The package also features a 16-page booklet featuring archive images and detailed sleevenotes from Paul Trynka, Trevor Simpson, Peter Hook and designer Vaughan Oliver.

T-Coy - Carino + Singles [LTMCD 2576]

LTM releases the debut compilation of early Deconstruction label House singles and Hacienda classics by underground dance act T-Coy (which stood for 'Take care of yourself') which was formed by Simon Topping (ex-A Certain Ratio) and Mike Pickering (Hacienda DJ, ex-Quando Quango, M People).

The album includes Carino (original 12" plus new remixes by Motor City Drum Ensemble and Steve Mac), 'I Like To Listen' and 'Night Train', along with 'Dream 17', a collaboration with A Guy Called Gerald originally released as Annette on the North: Sound of the Dance Underground album.

John Dowie - An Arc Of Hives

Influential early alternative comedian, writer and humorist John Dowie has his debut compilation album influential writer and humorist John Dowie out via the LTM Boutique label on 8 October. Dowie was a personal favourite of Tony Wilson and featured on FAC-2 A Factory Sample, FAC 19 'It's Hard To Be An Egg' and FACT 89 the 'Dowie' live video.

This remastered compilation CD includes pulls together those early singles plus unreleased demos recorded with the Smirks, Albertos and Fabulous Poodles, plus live material recorded in 1985. The cover art is by Ralph Steadman of FACT 89 fame.

Section 25 FACT 90 From The Hip vinyl issue

Factory Records Ltd (the resurrected imprint via LTM) releases a new double vinyl edition of Section 25's 1984 landmark album From The Hip on 28 May. The album, produced by Bernard Sumner, combined smooth synthpop with seamless electro beats. This new version features digitally re-mastered audio, with the original FACT 90 album on a single LP plus a bonus 12" single with two versions of seminal single FAC 108 Looking From A Hilltop. The 8-minute proto-techno Megamix version was edited and mixed by Sumner and Donald Johnson of ACR, and later sampled by both Orbital and The Shamen. The flip features Stephen Morris's (New Order/The Other Two) 2010 remix.

Peter Saville has 'digitally remastered' his original cover design with help from Matthew Robertson and Idea Digital.

Although original vocalists Larry and Jenny Cassidy have sadly passed away, Section 25 continue to perform and record in 2012 with work on a new album ongoing. Fronted by founder member Vin Cassidy, along with Beth Cassidy (daughter of Larry and Jenny) on vocals and keyboards they are joined by Steven Stringer on guitar and keyboards & Stuart Hill on keyboards. The band brings their retro-futurism to selected live dates throughout 2012:

The Wake 'A Light Far Out' (LTMCD 2550)

LTM releases the first studio album in 15 years by ex-Factory/Sarah band The Wake. Entitled 'A Light Far Out' the recording is their first since the band reformed in 2009 to play selected live dates in Brussels, London, Paris and New York. Core duo Caesar (guitar, bass and vocals) and Carolyn Allen (keyboards and vocals) worked with Ian Catt (St Etienne), Duncan Cameron (Teenage Fanclub) and remixer Drew Diver of NYC-based duo Horse Shoes.

'A Light Far Out' is out 7 May 2012 on CD/Download.

English Black Boys [LTMCD 2568]

LTM has announced details of an X-O-Dus compilation album which features the Dennis Bovell-produced 1980 single FAC 11 'English Black Boys'.

X-O-Dus were discovered by Rob Gretton who invited them to record an extended 12" dub single (replete with Saville-designed sleeve) which had 'See Them A Come' on the b-side. The group disbanded in 1981 without releasing an album so this digitally remastered archive collection with the single plus various unreleased demos is most welcome.

Minny Pops UK Tour 2012

Minny Pops are playing 4 gigs in January (Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and London) and then (outside of a gig in Amsterdam) that's it, probably for ever... To coincide, there's also a 1981 archive live CD/DVD called Standstill to Motion (LTM Recordings), which documents performances by the band in Amsterdam and New York coming out via LTM - more info to follow.

The Return of Anna Domino

Cult Crépuscule/Factory Records artist Anna Domino returns with not one but two CD and download releases via LTM Recordings.

First up, the compilation After Twilight (LTMCD 2562) features brand new tracks and reworks by Crépuscule artists, including Anna Domino, Paul Haig, Antena, The Names, Blaine L. Reininger and Cathy Claret. Anna contributes two new tracks, Wonderkey and The Light Downtown, as well as a remake of her slinky 1984 classic Rythm. All that plus extensive sleevenotes by Paul Pledger.

And then there's a reissue of the acclaimed 1999 album Songs From My Funeral (LTMCD 2539), recorded by Anna with partner Michel Delory and released as Snakefarm. The album covers the musical bases from downtempo to trip-hop via folky electronica.

LTM re-release the first album by Miami electro duo The Beat Club on remastered 15-track CD on 2 June 2010. The Beat Club are best known for their club smash Security released in 1989 on Robs Records and featuring vocals by New Order's Bernard Sumner.

Originally issued by Electrobeat in 1994, Paris includes the singles Security, Dreams Were Made to be Broken, X and Transamerica, on which Ony Rodriguez and Mireya Valls cover a variety of styles including electro, trance, Miami Bass and synth pop. The Robs Records connection is furthered with the inclusion of bonus remixes by Martin Moscrop of A Certain Ratio and Bernard Sumner.

Auteur Labels - Independent Project Records

The latest instalment in LTM's compilation series Auteur Labels featuring cult American post-punk imprint Independent Project Records is released on 3 May 2010.

Founded by Bruce Licher of renowned experimental group Savage Republic in Los Angeles in 1980, IPR has released a raft of diverse records by groups as diverse as Camper Van Beethoven, For Against and Savage Republic themselves.

The Factory connection on this release comes from the inclusion of Benway's Carnival by Abecedarians which was the B-side of the debut 12" release FAC 117 Smiling Monarchs (which itself can be found on LTMCD 2534 Auteur Labels: Factory Records 1984.

The 78 minute remastered CD features 23 tracks, detailed label history and archive images.

The forthcoming sampler album Little Darla Has A Treat For You: v.22, Indian Summer 2004 features an exclusive Crispy Ambulance track 'Open, Gates of Fire' (7:41) from The Powder Blind Dream [LTMCD 2372] sessions: the only studio version of Crispy Ambulance's standard live encore closer, never to be repeated. Crispy Ambulance say: "This is more than just an exclusive track. Culled from sessions for The Powder Blind Dream it's the only studio version of our standard live encore closer, never to be repeated."

The album also features 'Riding' by Thick Pigeon from the CD Miranda Dali [LTMCD 2381] and 'Caught' by Anna Domino from the CD Anna Domino [LTMCD 2397]

Drastic Measures

Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement by Minny Pops first appeared on the Dutch label Plurex in September 1979. It is now re-released as an enhanced CD including video by those nice people at LTM for the price of 10 UK pounds (LTMCD 2384). This album is "an uncompromising genre classic, the 13 track set mixes hard-edged electronica with modernist noise, and shares much in common with contemporaries Cabaret Voltaire, The Normal, Suicide and early Human League".

The Powder Blind Dream

The new Crispy Ambulance album is now expected to be released by LTM towards the end of March 2004. According to the band's official website "the album was recorded in June last year and was originally planned for release last autumn. However, problems with the original sleeve design caused the release date to be delayed.

A new sleeve design has been selected and the album is now in the manufacturing process. Our thanks to Dave Garson of Logoprint, Manchester, who has provided new images and a fresh design concept." The album is listed on amazon.co.uk for sale at the bargain price of 8.99 GBP with a 29 March release date.
