The Praxis XL Factory Records Anniversary badge

Scream City 5 - additional material

Scream City 5 was published in 2010 about 2 years after issue 4 and after just shorter than that in preparation time. The graphic design of the cover spanned just about the entire development period. It was pretty clear from the outset that this would be "The International Edition" and that some form of map would feature.

In the end it featured Buckminter Fuller's Dymaxion projection in a wraparound full-bleed design but not before a brief dalliance with vintage Ordnance Survey.

Praxis - A Factory Anniversary Exhibition

"In 1978 the unlikely pairing of a jobbing actor and a Cambridge graduate-cum-TV presenter founded a record label in Manchester. Alan Erasmus and Tony Wilson released their first record on Factory Records in 1979 and during the period up until its demise in 1992 made a huge impact, not only on music but on popular culture and design."

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Factory's first release, The Modernist presents an exhibition, PRAXIS XL, showcasing the legacy of Factory Records.

Curated and designed by stalwart of Factory's design team - Trevor Johnson, alongside brother Craig - the exhibition will feature selected output from 40 of the label's most interesting and sometimes esoteric projects.

Praxis - A Factory Anniversary Exhibition starts on Saturday 9 November 2019 at the Modernist Society [->] at 58 Port Street, Manchester M2 2EQ.

Praxis XL - A Factory Anniversary Exhibition

Hot on the heels of Use Hearing Protection FAC 1-50 / 40, The Modernist Society in Manchester presents a brand new exhibition, with 40 examples of Factory's design output celebrating the cultural legacy of Factory Records.

Trevor Johnson, who was responsible for many great Factory record sleeves, both with Johnson/Panas and independently, has curated and designed the exhibition with his brother Craig, also a key member of the Johnson Panas team at the time. Johnson Panas also designed much of the Fac 51 The Haçienda and Fac 201 Dry visual identities.

A unique brand has been created for the exhibition: PRAXIS XL. This is a reference to the philosophy expounded by Anthony Wilson (and The Modernist Society) that praxis was "Doing something because you have the urge to do it, inventing the reasons later."

The exhibition will run until 23 December 2019. More details when we have them.

A Paean To Wilson double blue vinyl edition

17 November sees the release of a double blue vinyl edition of A Paean To Wilson. This new edition produced by Cargo Records in association with The Durutti Column. The packaging, credits and notes are similar to the 2LP edition produced by Kooky Records for Record Store Day 2013 in the UK (which is sold out). The main difference is that this 2017 edition does not include the envelope containing the Manchester International Festival programme and the large postcard featuring the original artwork which were include in RSD 2013 package. Please also note that the 'Heaven Sent' tracks offered via download with the RSD 2013 2LP or as CD2 in the original cd version (Kookydisc 29/2) are not included.

All profits go to the artist.

The 2CD version (with 'Heaven Sent' bonus disc) is available again via Cargo.

Finally, please also note that this is not technically a formal Kooky Records release but is rather a Cargo/Durutti co-production. However, it does bear the original catalogue number and packaging.

Manchester Spins, the independent, non‐profit making, promotional recording project from Yvonne G. Rybka Erskine and Manchester based artists, launches on Record Store Day with the release of its first Limited Edition EP featuring Ash Mountain, in conjunction with an exhibition of work by noted Factory Records vinyl sleeve designer Trevor Johnson.

The Durutti Column - Chronicle LX:XL

Big news this week has come out of Kooky Records Towers with long-awaited details of the much-delayed new version of Chronicle by The Durutti Column. We will defer to Phil for all the details but, in summary, the new version, which is now titled Chronicle LX:XL will be released on 19 April 2014 (Record Store Day) in a 2CD deluxe package.

Fans will recall the first version of Chronicle was a special limited edition commissioned for the last "proper" DC gig at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in 2011.

The three tracks are The Other You, Bones & Sheena's Always Late are replete with jangly guitars, cutting melodies and the self-assurance of a band on the rise.

Colin White (Vinyl Revival) is opening a new shop in Manchester early in the New Year. It is very Factory-related in that it will sell original promotional posters and gig posters, art prints, etc including a number of Hacienda / Dry / New Order items from the personal collection of original Factory Records designer Trevor Johnson.

Trevor, who is famous for his solo and Johnson/Panas work with A Certain Ratio, Biting Tongues, Kalima, The Durutti Column and Electronic amongst others, has also designed the shop's graphic identity.

The Northern Quarter Picture Co. opens in January but you will be able to sneak a preview on their website at www.nqpc.co.uk very soon.

FACTVM Factory Records 1978–1992 Exhibition

Factory music fan Colin Gibbins presents an exhibition of his complete collection of the Factory Records discography at The Ice Plant in Ancoats, Manchester on 5-7 May in aid of local charity Forever Manchester.

A limited edition t-shirt designed by Trevor Johnson will be on sale at the FACTVM exhibition. This reworking of the original exhibition which Colin put on at the Ducie Bridge last year is back again (now with added Piers Adams - the missing item having been donated by no less than Piers himself).

The exhibition features a complete collection of all music releases on the Factory Communications Ltd label, in their original form, as issued at the time, including rarities, promos, test pressings and variations on cassette, CD and more.

Trevor Johnson has created the FACTVM identity for the exhibition, as well as limited edition merchandise to raise additional funds for the charity.

Colin comments: "I love Manchester, and I love Factory. We met massive enthusiasm for the small exhibition we did last year, and now my collection is complete I wanted to share it with others that share my passion, and by doing do raise money for Forever Manchester, a charity that supports the people that live here. It’s been a long journey to get here, with a huge amount of support along the way, and I cant wait to welcome people through the door to see this amazing collection."

Nick Massey from Forever Manchester added: "Forever Manchester is the Charity for people who have a passion for Manchester and Colin's passion for Manchester is obvious, the effort that he and his team of supporters have put into this exhibition to raise money for us is immense and for that we are extremely grateful. Manchester has a history of doing it our way, and Forever Manchester is about doing things the Mancunian way, and the FACTVM exhibition is a prime example of this."
