The Official Factory store via Warners has just launched a selection of t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the classic Factory smokestack logo amongst other designs, some of which were previewed at the Use Hearing Protection exhibition shop.

T-shirts are available in white, black, grey and, for kids, yellow.

Paul Smith x Factory Records T-Shirts

Paul Smith has linked up again with Warners/Rhino/Factory to launch a series of Paul Smith x Factory Records limited edition t-shirts as part of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the label. The five designs feature the first generation logo, the Use Hearing Protection graphic and the third generation "smokestack" logo.

Shoppers in the UK should visit paulsmith.com/uk in order to buy the shirts which are priced at £70 (!) and international shoppers should head to the main paulsmith.com site and select their region.

The Drifting Cowboys Durutti Column T-Shirt

Factory Benelux has produced a t-shirt for The Durutti Column based on the very first "Drifting Cowboys" (or "Two Crazy Cowboys") promotional poster, produced early in 1978 prior to the opening of the Factory Club and also reissued by Factory Too as Fac 3.11.

The design features a black and white screenprint on a charcoal grey cotton Gildan shirt.

The English translation text on the reverse reads:

"What's your scene, man?"
"Reification."
"Yeah? I guess that means pretty hard work with big books and piles of paper on a big table."
"Nope. I drift. Mostly I just drift."

The shirt is 17.00 GBP plus shipping and handling and is available direct from Factory Benelux mailorder.

FAC 318 Classics in Motion T-Shirt

FAC 318 was allocated to the "Classics in Motion" Classical showcase event (featuring I Fagiolini, Rolf Hind, Graham Fitkin, Red Byrd, Steve Martland and The Durutti Column) to launch the second wave of Factory Classical CD releases (FACT 316, 326, 336, 346 and 356) at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London on 29-31 October 1990.

FAC 318 was also issued to a 'Classics in Motion' T-shirt (in grey with black/yellow graphics), a poster and a leaflet; all with related graphics and "FAC 318" on them.

However, in typical Factory fashion, FAC 318 was ALSO later issued to the FAC 318 Flying Start exhibition stand...

FAC 288 'Twistin My Melon' T-Shirt

A companion T-shirt to the FAC 288 'Call The Cops / Shaun On One' T-shirt has been brought to our attention (thanks Andy W!). Featuring gaudily treated photos from the same Kevin Cummins photo shoot on a hotel roof it has Shaun and Bez (both probably on one) with the text 'HAPPY MONDAYS' and 'TWISTIN MY MELON' above and below. The small print reads: "FACTORY MERCHANDISE 1990 ©FAC 288".

As with Shaun On One, the provenance of these items as official Factory Merchandise is somewhat in doubt. However, I am assured that both were bought from FAC 281 The Area, the late lamented Factory merch boutique shop in Affleck's Palace.

Electronic T-Shirts for Record Store Day

FAC 288 Shaun On One T-Shirt

The ultra-rare Happy Mondays Shaun On One T-Shirt was assigned the Factory Records catalogue number FAC 288. However, the evidence would seem to point to them not being actually made by Factory. Fiona Allen, who ran Factory merchandising at the time, has no recollection of them and Kevin Cummins (whose photo it is) says no-one ever asked him for permission.

So it would seem these were made unofficially. As to how they came to be assigned the FAC number we can only assume that Tony Wilson saw one, liked it and decided to give a FAC number.

Of course if anyone has any information which contradicts this version of events then we would very much like to hear from them.

John Cooper Clarke live @ The Scala 19 Dec

John Cooper Clarke (no relation) makes a welcome return to London with a gig at the Scala in London's King's Cross this Sunday 19 December 2010 on the back of his latest jaunt around the country.

Trevor Johnson has designed some Johnny Clarke t-shirts and these are set to be on sale on the night.

Support comes from Ronnie Golden and tickets priced £17.50 (adv) from TicketWeb. Doors open at 7pm.

M + E, the design duo behind the merchandise booth of the last Magnetic Fields' tours, have launched a mini-store from their own website to sell a selection of t-shirts from the "Realism" tour.

The t-shirts, available in several designs and a range of sizes, can be ordered directly from m-plus-e.com.

In other news, Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields continues its festival run at Outfest, the 28th Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Tickets for the Saturday, July 17 showing at the DGA Theater are still available from outfest.org.

FAC 51 The Hacienda T-Shirts.

Over the years, a huge array of T-Shirts were produced for FAC 51 The Hacienda. Various shirts were made for the individual club nights (even those outside of the Hacienda itself) but there was also an impressive side industry in Staff, Security and even Customer T-Shirts. FAC 201 Dry also had its own birthday night, Staff and Security shirts. A selection is presented here, courtesy of Ang Matthews, ex-Hacienda manager, who takes up the story for Cerysmatic Factory:

"I worked at the Haç, behind the bar, '83 to '84 whilst I was a student: then went back as Assistant Manager '89 to'90: then, after the police court case & we re-opened, I became Manager & Licensee from '91 to '96.

"So, the T-Shirt thing. T-shirts had always been a major part of the Factory artefacts since the Hacienda had opened. The first T-Shirts, the Birthday T-Shirts and the Staff / Security T-shirts were always freebies but then we started selling some from the Haç cloakroom and they did OK. It was then decided to do this 'properly' & sell them from FAC 281 The Area. In true Factory fashion we never made a penny on them. This was a constant question of Wilson's - how come we lost money on our T-Shirts, especially the World in Motion ones - a large part of FAC 301 Factory Conference was taken up debating this. And no, we never came up with the answer.

"It was easy to get sponsorship from the drinks companies for the T-shirts - I'd just ask. The staff were always on at me to get new ones for them. I later found out why, they were selling them on the side. I found this out when I saw more than a few holiday-makers in Pasha, Ibiza wearing staff T-shirts - they told me they'd paid £50 for them off various members of the bar staff.

"Anyway, I got all the T-shirts together and decided to sell them. I love that pic of them all stacked up. Why did I sell them? Well, I didn't see any point in just keeping them in boxes - there were far too many to frame, so to eBay they went. There are 3 T-Shirts I've kept - the Black 'Haç '90 Hoodie', 'The Haçienda Must Be Built' and 'Haç Flowers' - these 3 were my favourites and, for me, epitomise a certain time long ago."

The Light

Manchester has always had its fair share of 'I was there' moments, and Friday night's (re)opening of FAC251 barged its way, ceremoniously, onto the list.

Any sense of Hacienda-vu - the opening was delayed whilst the builders finished building, the upper floors smelled of paint (some of it still wet), the fire alarm went off and that photo of Tony Wilson hangs above the reception desk - was quickly dispelled as Hooky took to the centre of the stage and, proudly wearing his (and Wilson's) heart - We made HISTORY not money - on his t-shirt, announced: "It's my club and i'll do whatever the f*ck I want!".

He then proceeded to do just that.

During an hour long, free and easy set that included Warsaw, Joy Division, New Order, Monaco and Freebass: Howard 'Mr Nice' Marks ranted, Mani played bass, Hooky played bass, Hooky's son played bass, Rowetta sang Atmosphere, Rowetta sang Insight, unfinished Joy Division and New Order tunes were finished, H air-punched, whooped, sang the wrong verses, paused mid-tune to get his breath back, and generally had the time of his life whilst co-lessor (?) Aaron Mellor stood transfixed at the rear of the stage, clearly loving every minute.

But one event - probably lost on all but the very few who were present at the opening night of the original Charles Street folly - confined the ghosts of how not to run a club to history.

Twenty years ago guests were summonsed by an invitation that consisted of a CD case bearing the axionometric diagram of the building on the cover. In true Factory style somebody forgot to hand out the contents - FACD 251 - on the night.

On Friday, though, VIP (or VASTLY INFLATED PERSONA according to their wristbands) guests were treated to a small gift: a CD case with an identical cover, this time complete with an actual CD.

A cheeky wink to the past indeed. But what of the future?

FAC251 The Factory could be a very interesting proposition: name any band in the world that would turn down an invitation to play in Peter Hook's front room. The fully northern alt-Ronnie Scott's.

Paperweight on their shoulders

Alongside the promotional poster and the "leaf" promo brooch (in gold and in silver editions), Factory Records really went to town when it issued the ultra-rare commemorative New Order True Faith paperweight bearing the Factory Records catalogue number FAC 183.
