Kanu, in the motion ex-parte, is seeking an order of the court transferring him to Abuja National Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Justice Liman, in a short ruling, made the order transferring the case file back to the CJ, following an application by Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku, SAN, considering the fact that the annual vacation of the court would be ending

The Department of State Services (DSS) lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, did not oppose Uchenna’s application.

Earlier, upon resumed hearing in the case, the judge hinted that there was no time anymore for the vacation court to decide Kanu’s motion.

He said not less than 30 cases were listed for the day’s proceedings by the registrar, and since the court would be unable to take all, the cases were pruned down to six.

The judge said in line with Section 46(8) of the FHC Rules, any case that could not be completed within the vacation period would have to be sent back to the CJ for reassignment.

He said though Kanu’s motion was an urgent one in view of the health ground, it was filed lately.

Responding, Awomolo said in case management, the court had the overriding decision on which case to go on and which not to go on.

Njoku said their application dated Sept. 1 was filed the same date.

“I have been served a few minutes ago the counter affidavit of the complainant/respondent (DSS). My lord, I haven’t read it,” the lawyer said.

He then sought the leave of the court to confer with Chief Awomolo.

“Having conferred with the lead counsel for the complainant/respondent, and in the light of the remarks my lord made this morning which is sensible and clearly persuasive to the bar,

“And given that the vacation ends today and in order not to impose a date on your learned brother in whom the substantive case is pending, we will be asking for an adjournment,” Njoku said.

Awomolo said it was unfortunate that the matter was coming up rather late.

“Had it been that they filed the application earlier, it would have been taken during vacation.

But we are ready to take the motion any time, any day,” he said.

Justice Liman consequently ordered that the case file be referred back to the registry for reassignment.

Justice Liman had fixed today for the hearing of Kanu’s application.

The judge had granted the motion ex-parte praying for the permission of the court to hear the application during the vacation period in view of its urgency.

He then ordered Kanu’s lawyer to serve all the processes and the hearing notice on the DSS in order for the security agency to respond appropriately.

Kanu, in the motion filed by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, sought an order “granting leave for the applicant’s motion dated 1st September, 2025, to be heard before the vacation judge.”

Giving an 11-ground argument why their request should be granted, Agabi said Kanu is presently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho in charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

He said Kanu, on May 19, filed an application praying the court to admit him to bail pending the hearing and determination of the terrorism charge.

The lawyer, however, said that the said application could not be taken before the annual vacation of the court, hence his continued detention.

According to him, while awaiting the resumption of the court activities, the applicant’s health took a worrisome decline, necessitating the invitation of doctors for the purpose of carrying out a thorough and extensive examination on the applicant.

The examination revealed issues to his health including organs such as his pancreas and liver as well as an emerging lump underneath his armpit and dangerously low levels of potassium.

“The doctors have recommended that he be moved to the National Hospital as an interim measure to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline.

The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement, thereby making more pressing the need to bring this application and have same heard by a vacation judge,” Agabi said.

He alleged that a letter by the doctors to the Director-General of the DSS, advising the transfer of Kanu, had gone without answer.

The Igbo pan group hailed the significant milestone represented by the incarceration of Simon Ekpa in Finland, where he has justly received a six-year sentence for terrorism-related offenses.

In a statement issued yesterday by the factional Deputy-President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Thompson Ohia, National Spokesperson, Ohanaeze underscores the international community’s recognition of the threat posed by Ekpa but also signals a decisive step toward restoring peace and security in the South-East region.

Part of the statement read: “The Southeast region, along with the entirety of the Igbo race, stands

indebted to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle; and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.

“Their concerted efforts have been instrumental in bringing to an end the devastating Monday sit-at-home protests and combating the broader issues of terrorism and insecurity that our communities and region have faced. With the Finnish government’s recent sentencing of Simon Ekpa, our collective stance is unequivocal: the people of the Southeast do not endorse any form of armed struggle or terrorism in the name of Biafra agitation.

“We stand united against violence and advocate for a nonviolent path toward self-determination. We convey this uncompromising truth with utmost candor and respect towards the Federal Government.

It is vital to emphasize that there exists a segment of repentant, peaceful, and nonviolent pro-Biafra agitators who are ready and willing to assist the Federal Government in its endeavors to eradicate the insecurity plaguing the Southeast.

This represents a prime opportunity for the Federal Government to adopt the ‘Carrots and Sticks’ approach, as famously employed by former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua that ended Niger-Delta militancy in 2008.

AnAbuja-based human rights lawyer, Barrister Christopher Chidera, has rejected the comparison between Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa.

Reports emerged on Monday that a Finland court had convicted a self-acclaimed Biafran leader, Simon Ekpa.

Chidera, a member of the Nnamdi Kanu global defence team, took exception to any comparison between the two agitators.

This was in reaction to a recent article on social media titled “From Finland to Nigeria: What Ekpa’s Conviction Teaches Us About Kanu and the Biafran Question.”

The article tends to compare the conviction of Ekpa in Finland with Kanu’s ongoing legal ordeal in Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday, the lawyer rejected the comparison, saying, “Let it be clear from the outset: this article is not journalism, it is propaganda—crafted to deceive the public and to prepare the ground for a judicial ambush against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu ahead of his next court date.

Ekpa, who claimed to be the Prime Minister of Biafra, was convicted for terrorism-related activities.

IPOB in an earlier statement said that Ekpa would bear his burdens alone, insisting they are not concerned about his conviction.

According to Chidera, Kanu’s case is fundamentally different from that of Ekpa.

To compare a lawful conviction abroad with an unlawful persecution at home is shameless falsehood,” he added.

Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has said the conviction of a self-acclaimed Biafra Prime Minister,

Simon Ekpa, by a Finnish Court within one year has exposed the Nigerian criminal justice system.

Idam said the Finnish Court has exposed Nigeria’s criminal justice system to scorn, mockery and dishonor before the international community.

In a terse statement he signed, the lawyer said the Nigerian government should not be influenced by the court judgment but should consider releasing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

He said: “Securing a verdict in Simon Ekpa’s case in less than a year is more of interest to me than the conviction itself.

“The expeditious conclusion of Ekpa’s case by the Finnish court has exposed Nigeria’s criminal justice system to scorn, mockery and dishonor before the international community.

Rather than gloat over the news, the government should seize the time to reflect on the practice and procedures of its criminal justice for possible improvement.

Importantly, the Federal Government must not be influenced by the conviction but should consider the release of Mr. kanu as the best peaceable option for the southeast, especially at the moment.”

On Monday, a Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland sentenced Ekpa to six years imprisonment for terrorism offences.

Finnish authorities had on November 21, 2024 arrested Ekpa following an investigation by its National Bureau of Investigation into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria

Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has lauded the Finland court judgment that jailed self-styled Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa. reports that a District Court in Finland on Monday sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison over terrorism-related crimes.

The development has generated reactions, with several stakeholders hailing the judgment and alleging that Ekpa was responsible for the unending unrest in the South East.

Igbokwe, on Monday, took to his official Facebook page to react to the court judgment.

In his post, the APC chieftain asserted that the “most interesting part of the judgment is Simon Ekpa will be deported after serving six years in a Finnish prison to face terrorism charges in Nigeria.”

Igbokwe vowed that the “pains of what we lost in the South East in 10 years will go round,” stressing that the “findings and those involved will shock the world.”

A District Court in Finland has sentenced the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Government in Exile, Simon Ekpa, to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes.

recalls that Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities on 21 November 2024, following an investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.

Following his arrest, Ekpa wasremanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which determined that the charge was based on “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent”, alleged offenses dating from August 2021 to November 2024.

During this period, the NBI also froze Ekpa’s assets, as well as those of his associates and related companies

The American Veterans of Igbo Descent, AVID, in collaboration with Rising Sun Charities Organization and Ambassadors for Self-Determination,

has petitioned the U.S. President Donald Trump to impose Global Magnitsky sanctions on a number of Nigerian judges and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami over their alleged roles in the detention and prosecution of Biafra agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

In a letter addressed to the president on Friday,

a copy of which was made available to journalists in Abuja, the groups accused the Nigerian judiciary of “gross violations of human rights” and complicity in what they described as the unlawful persecution of Kanu, who has been in detention since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021.

The petition specifically listed Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, former Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and former Attorney General Malami as those who “enabled arbitrary detention, extraordinary rendition, denial of fair trial rights, and suppression of free speech.”

AVID, which has been undertaking a serious campaign to free Nnamdi Kanu, wrote, “Judges enjoy no immunity for gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.”

AVID said in the petition, “Just as Nazi judges were prosecuted for sham trials and Russian judges have faced sanctions for arbitrary detention, Nigerian judges who endorse persecution must also be held accountable.”

The organizations recalled that the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had, in July 2022, declared Kanu’s detention unlawful, finding that it violated 16 international human rights covenants and ordering his immediate release and reparations.

“For over three years, Nigeria has openly defied the United Nations ruling, keeping Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in solitary confinement without trial,” said Chief

Ugochukwu Nwosu, spokesperson for Rising Sun Charities. “This is a direct affront to international law and a stain on Nigeria’s judiciary.”

The petition also cited several legal decisions in Kanu’s favor, including a N500 million award by the Federal High Court in Umuahia in 2022, and a June 2025 ruling by the Nairobi High Court which declared his extraordinary rendition illegal and awarded KES 10 million in damages.

Despite these rulings, the Nigerian courts, according to the petitioners, have continued to justify his detention.

They further criticized the 2017 proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as a terrorist organization, calling it “a politically motivated move” endorsed through an illegal ex parte proceeding.

“No country in the world, including the United States, recognizes IPOB as a terrorist group. Yet Nigerian courts cling to that label as justification for persecuting peaceful activists.”

The group accused Justice Murtala-Nyako, the Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, of “arbitrary detention, denial of right to counsel and access to necessary medical care, endorsement of ex parte prohibition of IPOB without due process.”

Also, it accused Justice Tsammani, then Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, Abuja, now Justice of the Supreme Court, of “arbitrary detention.”

Similarly, it said Justice Barka, who presided over the case at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, should be sanctioned for affirming arbitrary ex parte proscription of IPOB.

While it accused Justice Garba, who was Justice of the Supreme Court, of “affirming arbitrary detention to enable the Nigerian government to profit from its own crimes against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” it accused former Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council,

Olukayode Ariwoola, of “endorsing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s kidnapping, torture, extraordinary rendition, and arbitrary detention without trial.” The group said they should be sanctioned.

It alleged “the former Attorney General Abubakar Malami orchestrated Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s kidnapping, torture, extraordinary rendition, and arbitrary detention without trial” and should also be sanctioned.

The petitioners insisted that sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act are necessary to deter further abuses.

“Silence in the face of injustice emboldens dictators,” the petition concluded.

“By sanctioning these officials, Nigeria will be sending a clear message that human rights violations carry consequences, no matter where they occur.”

The organizations reiterated that their call is not merely about Kanu, but about broader accountability and the protection of human rights in Nigeria.

“This is about ensuring no judge, no official, and no government can trample on fundamental freedoms without repercussions. The world must not look away,” the petition ended.

Nigeria's Biafra war that many prefer to forget

The deaths of more than a million people in Nigeria as a result of the brutal civil war which ended exactly 50 years ago are a scar on the nation's history.

For most Nigerians, the war O the breakaway state of Biafra is generally regarded as an unfortunate episode best forgotten, but for the Igbo people who fought for secession, it remains a life-defining event.

In 1967, following two coups and turmoil which led to about a million Igbos returning to the south-east of Nigeria, the Republic of Biafra seceded with 33-year-old military officer Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu at the helm.

The Nigerian government declared war and after 30 months of fighting, Biafra surrendered. On 15 January 1970, the conflict officially ended.

The government's policy of "no victor, no vanquished" may have led to a lack of official reflection, but many Nigerians of Igbo origin grew up on stories from people who lived through the war.

Three of those who were involved in the secessionist campaign have been sharing their memories.

He had just finished grammar school and started training as a veterinary assistant at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in south-eastern Nigeria, when the civil war began.

Almost every student he knew became part of the war effort.

He joined the Biafran army and was assigned to the signal unit, whose responsibilities included "active intelligence and eavesdropping on the Nigerian military".

"We thought we were magicians," said 76-year-old Mr Ago.

"The Nigerians who were pursuing us were trained soldiers. We were not. We were drafted into the war, given two days' training.

"Plus the fact that we were hungry. Some of us, our skin was getting rotten. Nobody can fight a war like that."

In January 1966, some senior Nigerian army officers, mostly of the Igbo ethnic group, assassinated key politicians during a coup in the West African state.

Those killed included Ahmadu Bello, a revered leader in the north.

This led to months of massacres against the Igbo living in the north. Tens of thousands were killed while about a million fled to what was then known as the Eastern Region.

These events sparked the decision to secede, spearheaded by Ojukwu, who was then the military governor of the Eastern Region.

In the months preceding the war, Ojukwu often visited UNN, the only university in south-eastern Nigeria at the time, to meet with students and prepare them for secession.

Mr Ago looked forward to these visits, and joined the crowd who gathered at the university's Freedom Square.

"Once his helicopter touched down, everybody went there and, practically, school shut down.

"He had this incredible sense of humour. He spiked everybody up and we formed songs and were singing and enjoying ourselves."

In the first year of the war, the Nigerian government captured the coastal city of Port Harcourt and imposed a blockade, which cut food supplies to Biafra.

Mr Ago remembers the overpowering hunger that often forced Biafran soldiers to catch and eat mice. He also remembers the last year of the war when his unit was continuously on the move, fleeing the advancing Nigerian army.

"Somewhere in the middle of the war," he said, "the Biafrans made some dramatic successes that gave us hope that we might hold the Nigerians until at least some help from outside came."

By late 1969, all hope was lost.

Mr Ago left the army and went in search of his family, whom he had not heard from in more than two years.

He collected his portion from an allocation of raw rice to his unit, then set off towards the village of a relative, where he suspected his parents and siblings would be holed up.

"I had to carry the rice while starving myself, carrying it across rivers and forests until I found them," he said.

Many of his friends and classmates had died at the battlefront. But his family was delighted to see that the son and brother they assumed dead was alive. And they were glad that he had turned up with food.

Hunger killed more Biafrans than bullets and bombs.

When the university was reopened a few months after the war ended, Mr Ago returned to UNN, eventually graduating with a degree in plant and soil science.

"I think we would have done better if we had handled it with a little bit more intelligence," said Mr Ago. "I think now that Ojukwu… thought he was Jesus Christ.

"He thought he could do magic. If he had slowed down and allowed some people who were with him to advise him properly, we would have come out better than we did."

He was a physics lecturer at UNN when the civil war began.

For the next 30 months, he headed the Research and Production (RAP) group comprising Igbo scientists from various fields.

Its primary responsibility was to provide technological support to the Biafran army, which was poorly equipped.

The RAP's most notable product was the "ogbunigwe", a weapons launcher of remarkable and devastating effect which influenced the outcome of many battles in Biafra's favour, according to historical reports.

"Without us, the war would have lasted only about 30 hours," said the 85-year-old.

"When the war started, there was not a single weapon either in a store or anywhere throughout Biafra. They only had knives and cutlasses. No gun, no bomb, no nothing."

In the aftermath of the war, the Nigerian government did not want to impose any form of collective punishment.

Nevertheless, the Igbo faced some devastating consequences, particularly economically as the Biafran currency that people had accumulated became worthless.

Many Igbo still feel sidelined in Nigerian politics, as since the civil war no-one from the ethnic group has become president.

Increasing cries of marginalisation have led in recent years to the emergence of Igbo groups agitating once again for secession, particularly the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), formed by UK-based British-Nigerian Nnamdi Kanu.

Mr Oragwu wishes that the Igbo had paid less attention to the scramble for power at the centre, and instead distinguished their region by advancing the technological gains of the war.

"Biafra would have been a technological nation and would have been able to compete with anybody," he said, anger in his voice.

"That is what makes me sad. By this time, we would have been competing with at least South Korea."

The scientist's wartime accomplishments had caught the attention of the Nigerian authorities and he was invited by the government to pioneer a special science and technology programme for the country.

He was behind the setting up of four universities of science and technology in different regions of Nigeria and after retirement he published Scientific and Technological Innovations in Biafra, a book he hoped would inspire young Nigerians.

"Nigeria was programmed by the British colonial authorities not to participate in production and manufacture of global technologies," he wrote in the book.

"The war gave the opportunity to… reject the colonial design."

She was teaching English and French in a secondary school in Port Harcourt in southern Nigeria when the civil war began.

While the UK backed Nigeria, France was the most prominent supporter of Biafra.

But English was more widely spoken in Biafra, so translators were needed whenever French officials visited Ojukwu.

Ms Nwanunobi joined the Biafran ministry of foreign affairs as part of a handful of translators who worked directly with Ojukwu.

"The war was an incredible period," said 82-year-old Mrs Nwanunobi. "Everybody was forced to go home so you were forced to fraternise with your people more than any time before.

"And people who worked in every Biafra office were high level people. These were people who were doing all sorts of things and the war forced them out of their positions."

She enjoyed working directly with the Biafran leader, whom she and her colleagues fondly referred to as "Brother OJ".

He was a gorgeous person," she said again and again. "And he was disciplined. If any meeting lasted more than two hours, he wouldn't be party to it."

Her most memorable assignment occurred after the Biafran military captured six Italian oil workers employed by the Nigerian government.

Officials from different European countries travelled to meet Ojukwu to appeal for their release.

"That was the largest assembly we had," she recalled. "Even the Vatican sent representatives."

During the meeting, Mrs Nwanunobi conveyed to Ojukwu that he stood the risk of losing European support.

He promised to consider the matter, and the Italians were subsequently released.

Mrs Nwanunobi met Ojukwu for the last time on 23 December 1969, when she lined up outside his office with her colleagues, to receive a Christmas gift and a handshake from him.

A few days later, she left the country for the Biafran office in Paris. During a stopover of several days in Lisbon, she heard that Biafra had surrendered.

Her first concern was for Ojukwu.

"I was worried that he would come to harm," she said softly. "I didn't want anybody to disgrace him."

Her worry lifted when she learned that her boss had escaped in his private jet, and was granted asylum by Ivory Coast, a francophone country.

Mrs Nwanunobi spent much of the 1970s in Canada before returning to Nigeria in 1977, where she resumed work as a secondary school teacher.

Ojukwu himself remained in exile for 13 years. After he was officially pardoned by the Nigerian government, he returned in 1982, with multitudes pouring onto the streets of his home state of Anambra to welcome him.

He died in November 2011 and was given a full military burial in a ceremony attended by then Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, some other African leaders and members of the diplomatic corps.

Fifty years after the Biafran conflict, Nigeria is still battling to maintain its unity, with various groups, not just the Igbo, calling for the restructuring of Africa's most populous state.

It is probably for this reason that the war is barely mentioned.

The government has nothing to gain by reminding Nigerians that secession happened before and can be attempted again.

Let’s Have A Biafra Day to Learn from Western Sub-Nationals

It was not a typical Wednesday morning. It was cold and the sky was darkened from the heavy rainfall of the night before. I remember this vividly because I had grudgingly gotten out of bed, bumped my foot against the edge of the bed and desperately wished it was the weekend so I wouldn’t go to work. But it wasn’t!

I reluctantly got to the office and walked right into the middle of an argument. I wasn’t ready for work, neither was I ready to engage in any sentimental debate. I was going to head for my desk in the corner of the room, block out the noise and bury myself in work.

Digging for my headphones, I couldn’t help but overhear the conversation. “We may have a holiday next week!” Another holiday in June? I thought to myself. And just like that, the day got a little brighter.

My colleague continued, “The President just announced that Democracy Day will no longer be celebrated on the 29th of May, rather on the 12th of June, to mark the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history.” “Splendid!”, I remarked aloud, “we should also have a Biafra Day to remember the victims of Nigeria’s civil war.”

All eyes turned to stare at me and a colleague shouted, “No! Biafra was a sectional issue, not national.” I blinked. Sectional? The quote by George Orwell immediately came to mind: “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

The Biafran War, also known as the Nigerian Civil War lasted for three years between 1967 and 1970. Although factual and unbiased accounts of the War do not really exist, it is widely acclaimed that the War was as a result of the imbalance in politics among the major ethnic groups as well as the injustice the Igbos faced across Nigeria. In 1945, 1953 and 1966, more than 30,000 Igbos were massacred in the North and to prevent further deaths, the Igbos fled to the East, to their respective States of Origin. But not before killing a few Northerners as well.

While the Federal Government refused to appease the Igbos who were hit the most by the ethnic unrests, they decided to divide the country into twelve states from the original four regions in May 1967. The former Eastern Region under Lt. Col. Ojukwu saw the act of the creation of states by decree “without consultation” as the last straw, and so, the call for an independent nation of Biafra began.

During the course of the War, about 3 million Biafrans died from hunger and starvation, while a million more died from the wounds of war. The strategic bombings of major towns, military installations and the Defense Industry in Nigeria also had a devastating effect on the Nigerian civilian population. And in the aftermath of the war, the relationship between the Igbos and Yorubas never remained the same.

So why shouldn’t there be a National Day to facilitate discussions and ventilation of grievances on the worst war in the history of Nigeria? In Rwanda, a war-torn country, thousands gather on the 4th of July to celebrate Liberation Day; a day when the genocide against the Tutsi minority ended; a day to celebrate their country; a day whose remembrance keeps the country united.

A National Civil War Day, or whatever name one desire, will do more good than harm for Nigeria. A National Civil War Day would not fuel the fires of secessionist agendas, rather it would be a good step towards accepting the existence of a War that has left distrust in its wake. Remembering, rather than ignoring the losses and death of the War, would mean that young Nigerians of Igbo descent, will be well informed as to the choices they make, rather than agitate mindlessly to the dictate of different neo-Biafrans as happened recently. It would also mean a national acceptance that the Igbos are indeed important to the growth and development of Nigeria.

Remembering those murdered for their ethnicity, whether through starvation or war wounds is not only about honouring them, their families and making sure the victims are never forgotten; it is also to fight those who deny such atrocities ever happened. What we need to remember is that these aren’t just numbers. Each number is a human being who suffered and lost their life.

But of course, a Biafra Day or National Civil War Day may never be observed if Nigerians do not demand one. The change of the Democracy Day from May 27th to June 12th didn’t happen because of the goodwill of political elites. To the contrary, the Westerners have for years celebrated this day as their own Democracy Day.

To get your rights, sometimes, is to fight for your rights! Let all Nigerians begin a campaign for a National Civil War Day to commemorate the trials and tribulations, we as a Nation, went through to remain together.

George Agbakahi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and leader of the South East

Tinubu’s Support Group, has said that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,

IPOB, will be a major factor in determining President Bola Tinubu’s chances of reelection in the South East.

Agbakahi stated this on Friday while speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.

He highlighted the achievements of the Tinubu administration in the region, especially in terms of infrastructure development.

“You know, the President has done a whole lot in respect of infrastructure development in the South East. Almost the major roads in the South East are now under construction. Go to Enugu-Onitsha road that has not been touched by previous administrations, it is under construction,” he said.

Go to Enugu-Port Harcourt road, the same thing is happening; it’s working, a very important economic road. Aba to Ikot Ekpene that has not been touched for the past almost 18 to 20 years is currently under construction as we speak.

“The issue of South East Development Center Commission, SEDC, with 150 billion naira, you know, for them to use in economic development is working.

Agbakahi, however, maintained that beyond infrastructure, the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu remains a critical political issue that could influence voter sentiment in the region...

The president has done a lot in the South East, and the only area that I believe that is a major variable also in the South East is the issue of Nnamdi Kanu. That is a major variable that will also determine the election in the South East. And I’m quite sure that, as time goes on, our president is a father figure who understands the intricacies of politics and governance,” he added.

remains a political prisoner, and a prisoner of conscience in Nigeria. Kanu continues to be held,

against his will, and against the laws of the federation of Nigeria, whose courts have declared that he has broken no laws, and has no case to answer over the matter on which he is being held.

Kanu’s continued detention is now no longer a personal matter between Nnamdi Kanu and the Federal Government of Nigeria, it is now an insult to the Igbo.

I will come to this in a minute. But let me quickly outline the Nnamdi Kanu story, for those who do not know, or who may have forgotten, or who have been absorbed by too much flux of time, and who may now be extremely fatigued by the drag of this case. As at 2015,

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was an ordinary Nigerian, and actually, quite unremarkable.

Even back at High School, at the Government College, Umuahia, where he was my junior by one year, he was neither remarkable, nor did he show any inclination for politics.

Folks who were with him in Cozens House, down the very foot of the valley from the hill where my own House, Simpson, stood on the College drive, remember him as a little headstrong and stubborn.

But beyond that, Nnamdi Kanu was like us all, aspiring to the careers, and to live his best life in Nigeria, and make his own contributions.

He was admitted to the Law School of the University of Nigeria, but left for the United Kingdom to complete his studies,

when he allegedly felt that UNEC Law was not offering him the kind of education he desired.

But the next time we saw him, he was campaigning for Goodluck Jonathan.

There is an extant video of Nnamdi Kanu in London, joining other Nigerians to protest the surge of the Boko Haram, and the insurgency in the North,

which had spurted and was clearly orchestrated during Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure. Boko Haram appointed him their sole liaison and negotiator with the Jonathan administration.

Boko Haram was originally intended to create a targeted chaos, make Nigeria ungovernable,

and compel some kind of political leverage for these powerful northern interests. Its stated public goal was to dismantle the constitution

of the Federation of Nigeria, impose the Sharia, and Islamize Nigeria. Many Nigerians,

like Mazi Nnamdi Kanu saw through this anti-Nigerian ploy, and protested loudly, arguing as he did in that video,

that the violence orchestrated by Boko Haram and its sponsors would sadly disintegrate Nigeria. He did not want a disintegrated Nigeria, at As at this morning,

Then came the elections of 2015, Muhamadu Buhari’s coalition, the APC, using the threat of violence and sectarian uprising, pushed Nigeria to its limits. Muhammadu Buhari himself promised a blood tide if he lost the election.

These threats of violence, many Nigerians believed, pushed Jonathan to concede the election of 2015.

As he famously said, not a single drop of the Nigerian blood was worth his political ambition.

In the minds of Jonathan’s supporters like Nnamdi Kanu, however, the use of violence, and the threat of violence was the cause for Jonathan’s

“thoughtless” and “cowardly” concession. A mistake, in their estimation, and it rankled. But it also left an important example: threats can create political leverage in Nigeria.

Muhammadu Buhari also did not leave folks like Nnamdi Kanu much choice. In the very first statements of his presidency at the United States

Institute for Peace in Washington DC, the newly elected president Buhari was asked what he would do to bring political unity and restore Nigeria’s politically riven landscape. Buhari did not mince words.

He was not a man who really minced words. He was very straight in saying he would discriminate against those who gave him only 5% of the votes.

He very clearly triggered a political conflict. His immediate policies were unambiguous: he isolated the Igbo of the South East, just as Tinubu continues to do in his policies.

Buhari was the first president of Nigeria to introduce brazen, discriminatory,

and intensely prejudiced policies in the federal government. Of course, Ahmed Tinubu, the current president who succeeded Buhari has taken cronyism, nepotism, chauvinism, ethnic bias,

and favoritism to the next level, but it was all started by Muhamadu Buhari, who created the gold standard for bullshit. These men have very little ideas about how to govern, and inspire a multiethnic society and nation like Nigeria.

Their provincialism – the fact that they know nothing beyond the Maginot line of the regions where they are spawned – might because. But it has proved to be dangerous for Nigeria.

The political and economic isolation, and the brazen, and selective discrimination against a very distinct region of Nigeria lends fuel to interminable conflicts. That was the basis on which the IPOB was formed, led by Nnamdi Kanu.

The question that must really be asked is, what drove this very active pan Nigerian advocate, once committed to the indivisibility of Nigeria, to seek secession and self-determination? The answer is quite simple. Self-

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, blew hot as he petitioned the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), seeking sanctions against three judges -Justices Binta Nyako, Haruna Tsammani, and Garba Lawal – for alleged gross judicial misconduct.

Kanu, in the strongly-worded petition he personally signed and made available to Sunday Vanguard through one of his lawyers, Umesi, accused the trio of miscarriage of justice in his trial.

Recall that Kanu, who was extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya since June 2021, has remained in detention at the Abuja headquarters of the Department of State Service, DSS.

The IPoB leader chronicled the alleged offenses of the judicial officers against him, urging the NBA, currently meeting in Enugu, to investigate them and take appropriate measures against them.

Kanu also urged NBA to

“publish a report condemning the use of civil procedures to subvert criminal law, and the criminal law, and the resurrection of repealed statutes; affirm that no Nigerian should ever again be detained by abduction or tried under a repealed law; and to hold errant judges accountable, restoring public confidence in the Bar and Bench.”

According to him,

”the catalogue” of alleged infractions by the trio against him, “now stand as an un-erasable blot on Nigeria’s legal conscience” .

He alleged that what has been done to him by the Courts amounts to nothing less than judicial lynching as against constitutional order urging the Nigerian Bar Association to incorporate the proceedings as one of its discussions in the ongoing NBA conference going on in Enugu State.

Nigeria FG accused of injustices against Nnamdi Kanu

FG accused of injustices against Nnamdi Kanu

A group campaigning for the rights of the Igbo people has accused the Federal Government of injustice against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and other detained Biafran activists.

Scholastica Nwakaego Anyanwu, spokesperson of the IPOB Jewish Community, signed the statement and highlighted Kanu’s resilience, stating his case represents the wider struggle for justice and equality for the Igbo people.

Anyanwu, who said she is living in exile, accused the APC-led government of persecuting the Igbo through killings, displacements, and forced exiles.

She called on the international community to pay attention to what she described as human rights violations.

The group described Kanu as the face of their movement and praised his courage in standing up for the Igbo cause.

It also condemned the alleged targeting of Biafran families, including the family of HRM Eze Israel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s father.

The group renewed its call for Kanu’s release, warning that the challenges faced by the Igbo community would not be ignored or forgotten.

In related developments, the All Igbo Youth Forum has threatened to boycott the 2027 general elections if Nnamdi Kanu is not released.

The National President of the forum, Chief Chinedu Obilor, stated that the group shelved its planned protest over Kanu’s continued incarceration after discussions with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 10 to decide whether or not to free Nnamdi Kanu from terrorism charges against him.

IPOB has also raised legal questions ahead of the court ruling, urging the court to weigh them in determining the validity of the case.

The Federal Government has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Nnamdi Kanu’s threat to break up Nigeria was not a mere empty threat but a deliberate one.

Igbos in Rivers State have urged the Inspector General of Police to deploy adequate personnel to provide security for its proposed Igbo Festival billed to hold in the state.

The IPOB has been at the forefront of the renewed call for an independent state of Biafra. In 2020, the IPOB launched its armed wing called the Eastern Security Network aimed at protecting the Igbos.

Onyedikachi Ifedi Esq., has launched a scathing attack on what he described as “government-sponsored propaganda” against IPOB, insisting that the Federal Government has no legal grounds to continue holding Kanu in custody.

The lawyer in a statement sent to BIAFRA NEWS on Monday referenced the Canadian Court’s designation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the major opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as terrorist groups arguing that it happened “in a jurisdiction where justice is not for sale.”

Recall after the court decision in the past week, the Federal government rejected the designation arguing it amounted to meddling in the internal affairs of the country and called the Canadian government to renounce it.

However, the lawyer who is a member of Nnamdi Kanu’s global defence team said, “while APC-controlled propaganda outlets call IPOB a terrorist group, the civilized world has already branded APC itself as the terrorist. The irony is self-evident.”

Ifedi also argued that Kanu’s abduction from Kenya in June 2021 was a breach of both domestic and international law.

“The Nigerian government abducted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya in June 2021 in a classic case of extraordinary rendition — an act prohibited under both domestic Nigerian and international law,” he said.

He cited the Court of Appeal judgment in FRN v. Kanu (CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022) delivered on October 13, 2022, which held that Kanu’s rendition violated his fundamental rights and nullified the proceedings.

“Instead of respecting this binding judgment, the Nigerian Supreme Court in its 15 December 2023 ruling somersaulted, violating centuries of settled law by remitting a case that had already been nullified. That, dear reader, is the real theatre,” Ifedi added.

The lawyer accused the Federal Government of prosecuting Kanu under a repealed statute — the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013.

“The prosecution insists on trying Mazi Nnamdi Kanu under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013, a law that had been repealed by Section 49 of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022,” he noted.

“Therefore, every count predicated on the TPAA 2013 is a legal corpse. Yet the Nigerian judiciary continues to entertain it. That is theatre of the absurd.”

He cited the Supreme Court’s decision in FRN v. Ifegwu (2003) which held that “where a statute creating an offence is repealed, the offence and all liabilities created thereunder die a natural death.”

According to Ifedi, the government has failed to prove the basic elements of a criminal case against Kanu.

“No victim. No weapon. No violent act was attributed personally to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. At best, speeches and broadcasts — which are constitutionally protected under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 9 of the African Charter,” he explained.

Citing Nwankwo v. State (1983), he added, “Mere expression of opinion, however distasteful to the government, cannot constitute a criminal offence unless it falls squarely within the statutory definition. Thus, criminalizing speech is nothing but dictatorship dressed as law.”

Ifedi further insisted that any appellate discharge of Kanu already amounts to acquittal in law.

“It is settled law that where an appellate court finds that the trial court lacked jurisdiction, or that the charge itself is fundamentally defective, the proper order is not a mere ‘discharge’ but an acquittal,” he said.

He cited Abacha v. State (2002), Ezeze v. State (2004) and Oladipo v. State (2013), which held that defective charges terminate proceedings in favour of the accused.

“Since the charges are founded on a repealed statute and brought in violation of jurisdiction through extraordinary rendition, any order of ‘discharge’ by an appellate court is in law an acquittal.

*To call it otherwise would expose Kanu to the spectre of double jeopardy expressly forbidden under Section 36(9) of the 1999 Constitution,” he maintained.

The lawyer further argued that the real “theatrics” are not in IPOB’s agitation but in Abuja’s legal and political maneuvers

“Theatrics are not in IPOB’s demand for acquittal. The real theatrics are: a Supreme Court that upholds a repealed law, a prosecution that cannot prove actus reus or mens rea, a government that commits international crimes yet seeks to sit in judgment over its victim, and propaganda outlets that hide under faceless authorship instead of engaging the law,” he said.

“IPOB is not begging for acquittal; IPOB is demanding justice under the Constitution and international law. History, like law, is on IPOB’s side.”

The Comrade Isah Atiku Abubakar-led National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and order the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a joint statement signed by its President, Comrade Isah Atiku Abubakar, and Public Relations Officer, Comrade Orowole Eniola, sent to BIAFRA NEWS on Tuesday, the students’ body said Kanu’s prolonged detention has become “a matter of serious concern” and urged the President to adopt a political solution to resolve the issue.

“Kanu has been in detention since June 27, 2021, after his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria

“It is evident that he has been granted bail on several occasions by courts of competent jurisdiction, yet those judgments have not been enforced nor officially denied by the Federal Government,” Abubakar said.

The association noted that several groups, leaders, and organisations across the country and beyond have also called for the IPOB leader’s release.

“Notable individuals, religious organisations, political groups, and international organisations, as well as Ohaneze Ndigbo, Umudioka community, governors and lawmakers—especially those from the South-East—have consistently demanded his unconditional release,”

the statement read.

Following its meeting at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, NANS resolved to formally approach the Presidency to present the demands of Nigerian students.

According to Comrade Abubakar, the request is not only about Kanu but about safeguarding national unity.

“We hereby appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu by recommending a political solution to the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, because we understand that the President believes in the rule of law and the unity of the country,” he said.

He stressed that continued detention sends the wrong signal to Nigerians, particularly the youth in the South-East.

“No section of the country should feel marginalised or be treated like second-class citizens. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a national asset to the country and should be allowed to contribute his quota,” the NANS president declared.

Also speaking, NANS PRO Comrade Orowole Eniola said Nigerian students expect President Tinubu to rise to the occasion as a statesman.

“Mr President has a historic opportunity to heal wounds and strengthen our democracy. Releasing Kanu will not only douse tension in the South-East but also reaffirm the belief that this administration is committed to justice and fairness,”

he said.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to national unity while urging the government to embrace dialogue over prolonged confrontation.

A former lawmaker who represented Oshodi-Isolo from 2015 to 2023 in the Lagos Assembly, Jude Idimogu, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant clemency to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu, the leader of the self-determination movement, was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2021, brought to Nigeria, and had since been in custody facing trial.

Idimogu in an interview with NAN on Sunday in Lagos, said releasing Kanu would help the ruling APC in the South-East as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.

“It will add to our votes in the South-East. If the President can look at this issue, the South-East will never forget him but forever be grateful,” he said.

Idimogu urged well-meaning Nigerians including Igbo leaders, South-East governors to speak with one voice by appealing to the President to grant Kanu pardon.

He said that such pardon if granted would not be forgotten and would aid the party’s fortune in South-East in 2027 general elections.

The ex-lawmaker said, “I want to plead with our President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to kindly see the need to use political means to grant Nnamdi Kanu clemency.

“I want to appeal to all well meaning Nigerians, not just those from Igbo extraction, to help plead with Mr President to use his good office to release Nnamdi Kanu.

“If this is done, I believe the insecurity situation and tension in the South- East will reduce if not completely curbed and eradicated.”

According to him, a lot of miscreants have been using Kanu’s name to cause mayhem and atrocities in the region.

Idimogu, who is the deputy leader of Ndigbo in Lagos APC, said that the release of Kanu has a lot of advantages both for the South-East and Nigeria.

He said that it would de-escalate the tension and make the economy of the region to come alive again.

“Mr President, kindly look at the South-East case and bring back businesses and trading long stagnated in the region because of insecurity.

“An average Igbo man is a trader. We cannot overlook this situation and the contributions of these traders in the South-East to the economy.

“South-East used to be home to a lot of people before now, it just suddenly changed to be dens of insecurity and other vices. This can be arrested with Kanu’s release.

“Mr President, we know you to be a father with a compassionate heart, please, help us in the South-East, grant Kanu freedom to stabilise our region,” Idimogu stated.

Calls IPOB Leader’s Trial ‘Judicial Mutiny

A legal practitioner, Onyedikachi Ifedi, has condemned the ongoing terrorism trial of Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a judicial betrayal of the African Charter on human and peoples’ rights.

Kanu, who was forcefully returned to Nigeria from Kenya in 2021, is standing trial before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

But Ifedi insists the prosecution is unlawful because the African Charter, domesticated as part of Nigerian law, expressly prohibits extraordinary rendition and inhuman treatment.

In a statement on Thursday, the lawyer argued that any trial arising from Kanu’s abduction is unconstitutional, null, and contrary to binding precedent.

“To allow a prosecution tainted by kidnapping and torture to proceed against the Biafran leader is expressly forbidden by the Charter and confirmed by the larger constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” he said.

Ifedi faulted the December 15, 2023 judgment of a five-man panel of the Supreme Court which ordered Kanu back for trial, insisting that a seven-man panel of the same court had earlier ruled that the illegal abduction and transfer of a person across borders without due process invalidates prosecution.

He described the ruling as a “judicial mutiny” against the Constitution and the African Charter.

“This was not merely a miscarriage of justice. It was per incuriam, delivered in ignorance of binding law, and thus a legal nullity,” he declared.

Citing the landmark decision in Abacha vs. Fawehinmi (2000), Ifedi stressed that the Supreme Court had already established the African Charter as enforceable domestic law, equal in status to constitutional provisions on fundamental rights.

By disregarding that precedent, he argued, the court undermined its own authority and went against human rights protection in Nigeria.

He appealed to the federal government to comply with the earlier Court of Appeal judgment that discharged and acquitted Kanu on grounds of fundamental rights violations, urging that the trial be terminated to restore confidence in the rule of law.

Popular Nollywood actor, Ime Bishop Umoh, a.k.a. Okon Lagos,

has called on the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

He made the call in a recent episode of The Clarity Zone podcast,

emphasising that the IPOB leader should be released in the interest of peace and national reconciliation, even if it doesn’t make legal sense.

He claimed that pardoning Kanu would be morally right,

arguing that the IPOB leader’s agitation for Biafra’s secession was emotional and fuelled by the perceived marginalisation of the Igbos in Nigeria.

I am one million percent of the opinion that Nnamdi Kanu should be freed.

Free him. It may not make legal sense depending on what they have claimed,

that the evidences that have been put in the fore of the ‘crimes’ he has committed.

It [freeing Kanu] doesn’t need to make legal sense, but it makes moral common sense,” Umoh claimed.

His guest, Nedu Wazobia, asked: “How do you mean by it makes moral common sense?

Umoh replied: “It is morally right. Of course, he is a human being and he took emotional decisions, and emotional decisions are not right decisions.

He felt that his people were being marginalised and he started agitating for Biafra’s secession.

A legal practitioner, Onyedikachi Ifedi,

has said the continued trial of the Biafra nation agitator,

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges is an affront to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Nnamdi Kanu’s trial is being carried out at the Federal High Court in Abuja by the federal government upon his extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

However, the lawyer argued that the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights explicitly prohibited extraordinary rendition and inhuman treatment as done to Kanu, by the federal government in the Kenya abduction episode.

He submitted that since the African Charter prohibited extraordinary rendition and is part of the Nigerian law, prosecution of Kanu had become voided and unnecessary on the strength of the abduction.

According to him, to allow a prosecution tainted by kidnapping and torture to proceed against the Biafran leader is expressly forbidden by the Charter and confirmed by the larger constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The legal practitioner made his position known in a statement he issued to the media.

He submitted that the December 15, 2023 judgment of the Supreme Court by a five-man panel being used to prosecute Kanu was a great error because a seven-man panel of the same court had in the past frowned at such a situation when extraordinary rendition is involved.

According to him, the African Charter on Human, Peoples’ Rights prohibited extraordinary rendition as done to Kanu by the federal government and that since the African Charter is part of the Nigerian law, the trial of Kanu for whatever reason, is automatically forbidden.

Faulting the December 2023 apex court verdict, the lawyer noted that “in one breath, the verdict stripped Mazi Nnamdi Kanu of every protection guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, protections enshrined in Nigerian law by the African Charter (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

“In another breath, the same judgment is purported to remit Kanu for trial on repealed charges.

“This was not merely a miscarriage of justice. It was a judicial mutiny against the Constitution, the African Charter and binding precedent.

This is not a mere error. It is per incuriam — delivered in ignorance of binding law — and thus a legal nullity.

He cited Supreme Court of Nigeria in a matter between General Sanni Abacha & Ors vs. Chief Gani Fawehinmi (2000) 6 NWLR (Pt. 660) 228, where a full constitutional panel of seven Justices of the Supreme Court spoke on the status of African Charter (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

He submitted that the Supreme Court in the matter of Abacha and Gani Fawehinmi made it clear that the African Charter is enforceable in Nigerian courts as domestic law.

According to him, the Supreme Court made it clear that the African Charter is on the same pedestal as Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution in guaranteeing fundamental rights and that any Nigerian law, policy, or act of the State inconsistent with the Charter’s provisions is void.

According to him, “This decision is binding law. Under the doctrine of stare decisis, a smaller panel of the Supreme Court is bound by it. Only an equal or larger panel can depart from it.

In Osho vs. Foreign Finance Corporation (1991) 4 NWLR (Pt. 184) 157 at 188: “A smaller panel is bound by the decision of a larger panel.” Oladokun v. Military Governor of Oyo State (1996) 8 NWLR (Pt. 467) 387: “Hierarchy within the same court is determined by panel size; larger panel decisions prevail.” Abacha vs. Fawehinmi remains the gold standard for the African Charter’s domestic enforceability.

“When the African Charter was domesticated, it became part of Nigerian law with constitutional force. It is not a mere statute; it is a Bill of Rights rooted in both Nigerian and international obligations.

By discarding it, the FRN vs. Kanu panel did violence to the Constitution itself. No court of law can stand on such a foundation without becoming an engine of oppression.

“If this perverse precedent is allowed to stand, no Nigerian citizen will have meaningful human rights protections in cases involving state violence.

“The rule of law will be replaced by the rule of judicial convenience.The Supreme Court’s integrity will sink beneath the weight of its own lawlessness.

“The FRN vs. Kanu decision is void for failure to adhere to stare decisis and for arrogating to a five-man panel the unlawful power to overturn the decision of a seven-man constitutional bench.History will remember this case not as law, but as a monument to judicial betrayal, the day the Supreme Court of Nigeria broke its own oath and buried the African Charter alongside the Constitution”, he submitted.

The lawyer appealed to the federal government to adhere to the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which effectively voided the trial of Kanu, discharged and acquitted him on breach of his fundamental rights

He specifically pleaded that the judgment be invoked by government to terminate the trial and allow the IPOB leader enjoy his deserved freedom.

The Apex Igbo Socio-cultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo,

has refuted the recent statements made by the former Military Head of State,

General Yakubu Gowon that the Nigerian, Biafran civil war was not targeted at the Igbo people.

Gowon stated that rather it was instead the secessionists who revolted against the Nigerian government in 1966.

Ohanaeze said such claims are not only gross misinformation but also a blatant misrepresentation of historical fact while describing the representation as an affront to the collective memory and dignity of the Igbo nation.

The lgbo group noted that it is a moral obligation to address the pervasive biases and distorted narratives perpetuated by General Gowon, who, as a 91-year-old former military head of state, was tragically manipulated by colonial powers and the Fulani oligarchy.

In a statement issued on Sunday by a factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze accused General Gowon of failure to protect the lives of Nigerians, especially the Igbos residing in the North during the crisis which led to the civil war.

The statement pointed out that unimaginable atrocities were committed against the Igbo people following the 1966 Northern riots, which pushed them into a position of strategic self-defence, a response to a war they did not initiate against the Nigerian government.

The statement partly read, “The grievous narrative that General Gowon has chosen to propagate must be corrected. History will judge Gowon harshly if he neglects this final opportunity to redeem himself by discarding the military mentality and outdated rhetoric of national unity.

“He must have the courage to disclose the truth about the influences that led him to abandon the Aburi Accord, a peace agreement that could have averted the tragic escalation of the Nigeria/Biafra War.

“Gowon’s military aggression toward the Igbo was not merely a reaction to secessionist desires but a strategically calculated action driven by British economic interests in the oil-rich Eastern region of Biafra and the retaliatory motives of the Fulani oligarchy.

The Igbo body added that God Almighty has granted General Gowon continued life for two significant purposes, first, to surrender to his conscience and seek God’s forgiveness, summoning his moral courage to openly confess his misdeeds and provide an accurate account of the Nigerian Biafran War; second, to facilitate healing by leading efforts toward reconciliation and reconstruction for the Igbo people.

Ohaneze, however, said, “It is indeed lamentable that Gowon’s recent self-aggrandizing statements, possibly designed to sanitize his image, instead continue to perpetuate a façade that insults the deeply felt grievances of the Igbo nation.

”Rather than embrace this moment for personal and national healing, he has insulted the memories of the three million innocent Igbo civilians who lost their lives during the civil war.

His military pride and an oath of silence have tormented him for over five decades, leading to a deeply personal struggle that he must now confront.

”Ohanaeze’s unwavering advice to General Gowon is straightforward and urgent; as time passes, he must cease his evasive tactics, confront his conscience, and abandon the falsehoods surrounding this grave chapter of Nigeria’s history.

With only limited time remaining, it is imperative that he speaks the unvarnished truth and seeks forgiveness from the Igbo people and Nigerians at large.

“The curses resulting from the atrocities committed, such as the Asaba massacre, and the tragic toll of three million lives must be lifted.

“The painful repercussions of Gowon’s actions continue to resonate today, affecting even communities in the Middle Belt, where violence perpetrated by Fulani militias persists.

“This is a poignant moment for his associates to create yet another opportunity for him to come forward, unburden himself, and speak the truth.

“The world is watching and waiting for General Gowon to rise to the occasion for the sake of posterity, the statement said.

Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu,

leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has said the family of the Biafra agitator has paid a heavy price for his agitation.

Ejimakor said the matter of Biafra has impacted heavily on the family of Kanu.

Kanu has been incarcerated since June 2021 when he was picked up in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

Since his return to Nigeria, the IPOB leader has remained locked up by the Department of State Services (DSS), despite court orders that discharged and acquitted him.

In the course of Kanu’s Biafra agitation, the military, under the codename Operation Python Dance, had attempted to eliminate him but failed. Soldiers had invaded Kanu’s residence in Afaraukwu in Abia State but missed him. Amid the agitation for Biafra, Kanu lost both parents.

However, posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “The matter of MAZI NNAMDI KANU & #Biafra have impacted equally, if not more, on his immediate family & they’ve fought & led from the front, contributing most to every case won, including Appeal Court, Kenya, Umuahia, UN, Enugu & AU. And they’ve paid a heavy price #PythonDance.”

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,

IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has extended an open invitation to anybody who wants to visit him at the Department of State Services, DSS, facility.

Kanu gave the invitation in reaction to the Kenyan High Court’s ruling on his extradition rendition to Nigeria.

This was disclosed by his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, on Friday after his routine meeting with the Biafra agitator.

Security agents had rearrested Kanu in June 2021 and subjected him to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria.

But a Kenyan High Court sitting in Nairobi, on June 24, ruled that Kanu’s extraordinary rendition was unlawful and illegal.

Reacting to the judgment, Kanu commended his lawyers and family members for the landmark judgment. Posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “Rising from today’s visitation, MAZI NNAMDI KANU took the opportunity to hail his lawyers & siblings for the stunning victory from Kenya.

“He also extended an open invitation to anybody (who is in doubt about his messages thru his lawyers) to personally pay him a visit at the DSS.”
