" Mereka menguasai di Italia, namun saya pikir kita bakal memperoleh pemahaman tambah baik perihal ke mana scudetto bakal mengarah sesudah Juve bersua Roma pascaliburan musim dingin. "

Harvard Academy Graduate Fellowships, USA

The Harvard Academy will appoint two Graduate Fellows next year to join the Harvard Academy Scholars in undertaking outstanding research in the social sciences in non-Western areas of the world.

The Harvard Academy identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences, including history, with a command of the language, history or culture of non-Western countries or regions. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.

Academy Graduate Fellows are full-time doctoral students at Harvard University who have completed all coursework and examinations and most of their research. They receive the Fellowship as their dissertation completion year. They join a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, curiosity and originality whose work in non-Western cultures or regions shows promise as a foundation for exceptional research careers.

Terms
Graduate Fellows are resident during the academic year and participate fully in the Academy’s activities. They present their research once during their year as Graduate Fellows. They share offices in the Harvard Academy and receive the Harvard Academy predoctoral stipend ($28,000), medical insurance costs, research funds ($2,000), and mentoring from the Harvard Academy Senior Scholars.

Harvard Academy Graduate Fellows are ineligible for reappointment. They may apply to be a Harvard Academy Scholar, though their year as a Graduate Fellow will count as one of 2 years at the Harvard Academy.

How to Apply
Harvard Departments in the social sciences and history may nominate graduate students as Harvard Academy Graduate Fellows. There is no self-nomination and no application form. The nominee must provide a cover letter, a CV, and a statement describing their research. A dissertation chapter, an annotated table of contents or titles of papers, an official transcript and a letter of recommendation from a Harvard faculty member are also required. The letter should include discussion of progress toward degree. All materials are due October 1 each year. Graduate Fellow finalists will be interviewed with Academy Scholar finalists in Cambridge in early December. Recipients will be notified in early January.

Applications should be mailed to:

The Academy Scholars Program
Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies
Weatherhead Center for International Affairs
1727 Cambridge Street
Cambridge, MA 02138

All materials must be received by October 1 of each year. The selection process begins immediately thereafter. Applicants whose materials are late or incomplete are at a disadvantage when considered by the Selection Committee. Announcement of the awards will be made in January.
On 13 July 2010, the Erasmus Mundus Grant Committe has selected UNESCO-IHE's proposal on a new Masters Course on Flood Risk Management for funding under the 2010 Erasmus Mundus Action 1 Call for proposal. The new Masters Course will be offered in collaboration with the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Integrated flood risk management aims to reduce the human and socio-economic losses caused by flooding while at the same time taking into account the social, economic, and ecological benefits from floods and the use of flood plains or coastal zones. The need for the adoption of a holistic integrated approach to managing flood risks has been reflected in the Flood Directive of the European Parliament. Existing Masters programmes on floods offered at EU cover many technical aspects but lack integration. The programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics - from drivers and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment, and is therefore an important advance in water education for Europe.

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Course on Flood risk management is offered by the consortium consisting of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (the Netherlands), the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The associated members include European hydraulics laboratories, namely, DHI (Denmark), Deltares and HR Wallingford (UK), and from key national organisations responsible for flood management, including Rijkswaterstaat (the Netherlands). ICHARM (Japan), and three organisations from Bangladesh are associated members as well. All these partners bring their specific complementary expertise in flood risk management to the EMMC, which graduates educated flood risk professionals with a broad vision of the processes occurring in river basins and in coastal zones at different spatial and temporal scales, and who can master the links between systems, processes and natural and socio-economic constraints for all the aspects of the water cycle.

During the 2-year programme students start at the Technical University of Dresden, where they complete their first semester with 30 ECTS with courses on hydro-meteorological processes, global change and its impact, flood risk management and GIS. Then the students move to UNESCO-IHE for their 2nd semester with 30 ECTS where they receive courses on modelling for planning, forecasting, control and decision support, hazard mapping, ICT, and fluvial flooding and urban flood disasters. Subsequently, the students move to the Technical University of Catalonia to follow part of their 3rd semester with 20 ECTS with courses on hazards due to flash floods, debris flow, coastal flooding, and climate change. The last part of the 3rd semester is hosted by the University of Ljubljana where students follow courses on spatial planning, and socio-economic and institutional framework of flood risk management to earn 10 ECTS. Each semester provides a number of electives, and there are international fieldtrips. Finally, the students carry out their thesis work (30 ECTS) at one of HIEs or with an industrial partner. Successful candidates receive MSc degrees from the Technical University of Dresden, UNESCO-IHE and the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona.
Lean premixed agitation are articular to be a abeyant applicant for environmentally affable gas turbines. Because of the inherent alternation issues in angular combustion, the use of fractional premixing strategies is assured and is frequently acclimated in automated gas turbines to accept bland operating characteristics. The accident of agitation oscillations arch to thermoacoustic instabilities is additionally assured in ample automated gas agent and these instabilities appear into ablaze at an avant-garde date of fresh agent development programmes. Hence altering combustor architecture will be actual big-ticket and these instabilities are usually controlled appliance adult accessible or bankrupt bend ascendancy strategies congenital based on experience. Thus, there is an adorable allurement to advance reliable methodologies and accoutrement to adumbrate agitation instabilities back there is a abundant bread-and-butter accretion in appliance reliable predictive accoutrement in fresh agent development. This activity is a aboriginal footfall appear this goal.

The capital aim of the activity is to simulate the thermoacoustic instabilities of angular premixed and partially premixed bonfire appliance the most recent agitation models developed in the accomplished few years at Cambridge University Engineering Department for agitated premixed and partially premixed combustion. It is accepted that one of the bartering CFD accoutrement forth with the CUED agitation submodels will be acclimated to simulate agitated combustion. These CFD after-effects are to be analysed to access blaze alteration functions which will be acclimated in consecutive thermoacoustic simulations appliance loworder modelling methods. There is additionally a ambit for developing a fresh modelling approach. These predictions are to be compared with appear after-effects on thermoacoustics and this activity involves accord with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan.

The acknowledged applicant will accept a aboriginal class, at atomic 2:1 or equivalent, postgraduate amount in Mechanical/Aerospace/engineering or any added accordant fields. A able accomplishments in aqueous dynamics, combustion, after methods and acceptable analytic abilities are desirable. Appliance from across apprentice is welcome.
5 Mobility Stipends in ICT
The PhD stipends are offered via a grant to three departments at Aalborg University; Department of Electronic Systems, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Mathematical Sciences. The grant from The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation covers 5 full financed PhD stipends.

The driving hypotheses of the projects are the following:

Hypothesis: Adaptive signal processing algorithms implemented as embedded software can be used to linearize a highly nonlinear but energy efficient power amplifier core to yield an overall linear and energy efficient amplifier. The applicant needs competences in one or more of the areas: RF electronics and modelling, embedded systems, IC design, FPGA design, power amplifier design, and RF simulation techniques. Contact: Professor Torben Larsen (E-mail: tl@es.aaau.dk, phone: +45 2020 6856).

Hypothesis: Bayesian statistical methods based on a unified approach for divergence approximations can be used to improve the performance of data receivers for mobile communications where the challenge is to make a decision on what data was originally sent by a transmitter or a group of transmitters, when the data is corrupted due to interferences, e.g. generated by other transmitters. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: Data receiver design, wireless communication, signal processing, and Bayesian statistics. Contact: Professor Bernard Fleury (E-mail: bfl@es.aaau.dk , phone: +45 9940 8629).

Hypothesis: Quantitative model checking, simulation, static analysis and compiler optimizing methods may be used for designing and implementing optimal mappings and scheduling of embedded applications onto multi-core, multi-processor and networked architectures. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: Computer science, embedded systems, multi-core architectures, and verification and scheduling. Contact: Professor Kim Guldstrand Larsen (E-mail: kgl@es.aaau.dk , phone: +45 9940 8893).

Hypothesis: Advances in spatial and computational statistics are capable of improving the foundation for understanding and exploiting data-dependent characteristics of spatio-temporal indexing and query processing techniques for the mobile Internet, thus resulting in more effective techniques. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: computer science and statistics – in particular interest in the mobile Internet and spatial and computational statistics. Contact: Professor Jesper Møller (E-mail: jm@es.aaau.dk , phone: +45 3057 3127).

Hypothesis: Utilizing simultaneous coverage from multiple wireless access devices and exploiting knowledge about typical spatio-temporal communication patterns obtained through spatio-temporal data mining techniques, it is possible to predict which links can be kept in a low power state at certain times, while still allowing data packets to be routed in the mobile core network, and thereby reducing the overall power consumption very significantly. Desired competences in one or more of the areas: databases, data mining, and/or spatio-temporal data management, combined with an interest in wireless communications. Contact: Professor Torben Bach Pedersen (E-mail: tbp@es.aau.dk, phone: +45 9940 9975).

If you want to apply for more than one PhD position you must submit an application for each position. Please indicate in the comment box which stipend (A, B, C, D or E) you are applying for. Applications sent by email will not be accepted.

The projects are supported by three departments as mentioned earlier; Dept. of Electronic systems, Dept. of Computer Science, and Dept. of Mathematical Sciences. For all projects two supervisors will be appointed – a main supervisor and a co-supervisor. The two supervisors will always be from different departments. It is the plan to have some joint activities for all 5 PhD students – for example, a summer school is planned.

Requirements
Since the PhD stipends have been funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation with the plan to improve mobility, you are not allowed to have a Masters degree from Aalborg University. As long as your qualifying masters degree has been received from any other university than Aalborg University you can apply – also if you have your degree from another Danish university.

The application
The applicant must submit an application for each stipend he or she wishes to apply for. The application must include the following:

An application letter stating the motivation of the applicant to apply for precisely this stipend, applicants background, other relevant information etc. This letter must also include a list of submitted material.

A Curriculum Vitae.

Copies of all relevant degrees obtained as well as copies of relevant scientific papers etc. These must be in Danish or English (signed by an authorized translator). Exam papers in other languages can`t be assessed.

A maximum 2 page (11 point Calibri / 2 cm margins all sides) proposal for the research to be pursued in the project containing:

Suitable title.

Brief background for the project.

Initiating problem.

Short state-of-the-art in the field with use of a few key references.

Novel ideas to solve the proposed problem (in the form of bullet points).

Main challenges to work on in the project (in the form of bullet points).

A rough sketch of a time and work plan.

Up to 5 key references.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

The transport industry continuously seeks design and manufacturing solutions that enable lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This includes hybrid structures involving different material classes (steel, titanium, aluminium and magnesium) and different material forms (rolled sheet, castings, and laminates). This project will focus on novel friction joining technologies for dissimilar material systems (friction stir, friction stir spot, and ultrasonic welding). It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EPSRC, and is in collaboration with Manchester University Materials Science Centre.

The research in Cambridge will focus on development of process models for metal flow and heat flow in friction processing, using finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics. Key challenges are:

to develop and model a simple test rig to determine the material deformation response at the high temperatures and strain-rates characteristic of friction stir processing;
to develop computationally efficient process models to optimise tool designs and welding conditions in dissimilar alloy joints;
to develop a new process model for ultrasonic spot welding.
The Manchester group will be responsible for making the instrumented test welds on their in-house friction stir and ultrasonic welding machines, and for the detailed characterisation and modelling of microstructure evolution and interface reactions. Both groups will undertake mechanical testing of a range of joint geometries and material combinations.

The project will involve close collaboration with a current PhD student in Cambridge, and frequent visits to the project partners in the University of Manchester.

Background Required:

Applicants should have a 1st or 2.1 degree in Engineering, Manufacturing or Engineering Materials. Some previous experience of numerical modelling would be preferred.

Funding Source:

Standard EPSRC studentship (PhD or MPhil) including tuition fees for UK/EU students only (current tax-free maintenance stipend: £13,290 per year). Fully self-funded applicants of appropriate academic standing from outside the EU may be considered.

Start Date: 1 October 2010 or 1 January 2011

Application Deadline: 30 June (for October start) or 31 October (for January start).
The Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University is currently accepting applications for the ISM Fellows in Sacred Music, Worship, and the Arts for the 2011-2012 academic year. This unique residential fellowship will allow scholars and practitioners in sacred music, liturgical and ritual studies, or religion and the arts to join a vibrant interdisciplinary community at Yale University for one year to further and share their work. The fellowship provides a stipend of up to $60,000, and offers the opportunity to teach.

Eligibility
The quality, significance, and focus of the work fellows propose to do during the residency are of paramount importance in the selection process. Each fellow will undertake a substantive and original project that relates to the mission of the Institute. This could be original scholarship, an art exhibition, a musical composition, or work of creative writing, etc.

The Institute especially seeks fellows whose accomplishments have already established them in their field, although applications will be accepted from scholars and practitioners at all career levels. For those at academic institutions, tenure is a desired qualification. An applicant should typically hold the terminal degree in her or his field, although exceptions to this rule may be made in some artistic disciplines. The work applicants propose to pursue must support the mission of the Institute; fellows are expected to work primarily on this project during their year in residence.

Clustered Applications
The Institute welcomes applications from a cluster of qualified individuals who wish to work on a common project. Each person must complete a separate application and note in the appropriate place that he or she is part of a cluster. The same guidelines apply in every other way.

Application Process
The application deadline is September 20, 2010. After the selection committee consisting of senior faculty at Yale and sister institutions makes its deliberations, applicants will be notified of their status by February 15, 2011

For those who wish to teach, please include a brief description of one to three courses and the departments or schools in which these courses might be taught as well as a course title, weekly lecture topics, and short reading list. Additional information may be required of fellows after they have been invited to come. Three letters of reference from qualified leaders in the applicant’s field. Letters should include an evaluation of the applicant’s research proposal and his or her capacity to fulfill it. The online application requires a list of the names, positions, and contact information of recommenders who will be asked to submit their letters online.

If a recommender has no access to email, the applicant should notify us at ismfellows@yale.edu
Application deadline for receipt of all materials is September 20, 2010. The online application for the 2011-2012 fellowship year will be available soon.

Job description
The overall scientific aim of this PhD project is to disclose and characterise the mechanisms involved in immunity to a lethal fish rhabdovirus (viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus, VHSV). A DNA-based vaccine inducing a highly protective immune response here represents an important tool along with immuno assays and molecular biology techniques. A major task will be to determine mRNA and miRNA response profiles to vaccination and/or infection and to correlate these with the phenotypic traits (level of immunity, humoral and cellular immune response). Gene expression analysis will be an important activity, but work at all levels including also functional studies of virus propagation in cell culture as well as wet lab vaccination and infection trials should be expected. Publishing of results in scientific journals will represent an integrated element. A number of training courses will be included in the PhD study.

Qualifications
Applicants should meet the following qualifications:

A master`s degree in either veterinary medicine, biology or a comparable discipline or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master`s degree

Experience in immunology, virology and/or molecular biology research

An interest in scientific understanding of host-pathogen interactions, aiming at development of strategies for disease prophylaxis

Fluency in English speaking and writing

Good skills in scientific communication and innovative thinking, good social skills

Web Address: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/

Overview
The Research Centre for Linguistic Typology (RCLT) at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/rclt) invites applications from suitably qualified students to enter its PhD program.
The RCLT is committed to comprehensively analysing the linguistic structures of languages that are endangered or have previously been little studied or are completely undescribed.

PhD candidates at the RCLT undertake extensive fieldwork on their chosen language. Following a period of academic preparation at the RCLT, students will take a fieldtrip of at least several months duration to the community where the language is spoken. Fieldwork methodology centres on the collection, transcription and analysis of texts, together with participant observation, and judicious grammatical elicitation in the language under description. RCLT students also aim at language documentation: recording a range of linguistic styles, and building a corpus of linguistic data that can be archived in international digital archives which are available to both specialist linguists and the speakers of the language.

PhD candidates aim to write a grammatical description of the language they are working on, covering the central areas of language such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics of that language. Candidates may find that some of these areas merit a deeper examination than others. Following the completion of a first draft of the thesis, the candidate would undertake a second field trip of a further several months, during which time the basis and claims of the thesis can be checked.

he scholarship will be at the standard La Trobe University rate, Australian $22,500 p.a. Students coming from overseas are liable for a tuition fee but this can usually be covered by a separate scholarship. A small relocation allowance may be provided on taking up the scholarship. In addition, an appropriate allowance will be made to cover fieldwork expenses. The scholarship is for three years (with the possibility of a six month extension).

Closing date for international applicants: 30th September 2010
Closing date for Australian and New Zealand applicants: 30th October 2010
Job description:
Friction stir welding (FSW) is currently a growing process of solid-state joining. Under development since a decade, its main advantage lies in the absence of intrinsic defects unavoidable in usual liquid-state joining processes. However, the mechanisms of formation of friction-stirred welds still remain largely unknown, due to the complexity of the underlying phenomena:
(i) the strong spatial variations of the deformation and temperature fields,
(ii) the nature and thermomechanical behaviour of materials and tools.

The fields of application of FSW are spreading towards the joining of different materials, especially those with strong chemical affinity, and the microstructural characterization of FSW beads between aluminium alloys and pure copper recently performed in our research group has evidenced the presence, probably detrimental, of intermetallic compounds at the interface. In particular, phases with stoichiometries AlnCup(Xq) - with X an addition element - not mentioned on the equilibrium phase diagrams Al-Cu(-X), have been detected with the nugget, a vortex zone mostly deformed by the process.

In this context, the proposed study, lying within a more general framework of interpretation of the physical phenomena involved in FSW, will aim at elucidating the origin and nature of the previously mentioned AlnCup(Xq) compounds, by means of coupling between experiments and atomic-scale modelling.

The first part of the work will consist in the elaboration of AlnCup(Xq) phases by mechanical alloying of a mixture of powders, followed by their characterization (crystal structure, thermal stability…) via complementary investigations relying on microscopy, calorimetry, X-ray diffraction… The results obtained through this alternative large-strain process will enable to precise and extend the thermomechanical conditions of formation and stability of the metastable compounds induced by FSW. In parallel, numerical simulations will be carried out in the case of a model binary alloy Al-Cu. These simulations, involving ab initio calculations followed by a cluster-expansion-based thermodynamic modelling, will aim at providing a semi-quantitative measurement of the degree of metastability of the concerned phases, leading to data relevant for an improved assessment of the phase diagram. As far as possible, these results, concerning a binary alloy, will be extended via the study of the influence of addition elements (mainly X=Si) on the stability of the intermetallic compoundsdetected.
