SIMPLICITY ITSELF
Most racers equip themselves for weekends away with some form of Ezi-Up tent for shade from the elements. The FoxWing serves a very similar purpose, but has two major advantages.

ACTIVECOMPONENTS MINI DV CAMERA - updated

Here's some footage with the Mini DV mounted on the front forks of the XR1200X
It does quite an interesting job. There is some distortion caused by the extreme vibration from being hard mounted on a H-D. This would not be evident on a helmet or on-rider mount, but its a pretty cool effect anyway. The native sound is also quite viable.

BOOT IT!
The boots need no introduction. Sidi Crossfire MX boots, and in this case the SRS edition, are at the pinnacle of safety and design. I was just going over the disc with the images from the '10 Harley Launch in Aus and noting how well my gear worked.

The weather forecast for Geelong and the Great Ocean Road was '4 seasons in one day' so I took the wet suit.

I reckon my new helmet is simply fabulous. Arai Chaser Phil Read Replica. Most of the other Journos on the ride asked or commented on it. Comfortable and a real pleasure to wear. A beautiful thing.

The Rev-it jacket did the business through a few heavy showers too. Warm and comfortable throughout the ride. Motomail has a range of them and they appear to be pretty good value for money. There is a review here.

The Harley FXR Boots worked really well too - They proved waterproof and feet stayed nice and dry and with good comfort on and off the bikes. Sturdy rubber soles. Get them from AMPS at $230ish retail not bad value either. Harley do have an excellent range of boots.

I wore a $25 (from motomail) pair of lightweight plastic pants over Rev-it leather 'Canyon' jeans. They (jeans) have been really good too, over 4 years and a pretty decent crash and the linings are still intact. My black leather suit that I use in KR a lot is 4 years old now. It's still in good order apart from a few battle scars.

I did tear the daylights out of the Overpants on a XR1200X hero peg as we were getting ready for the last leg of the ride so had no option but go for the gaffer tape look.

We calls it 'Star quality'. But for $25 I got 2 seasons out of them and will have no hesitation going with them again. They roll up small enough to go under the seat and are a good option over the top of leather.

JIM WALSH: CONTIMOTION TYRES

"Can you pass a Motion at this price?"

What the?

It's funny what catches your eye when you're staggering around aimlessly in one of your favourite bike shops and that piece of genius copy certainly managed to pierce the cloud of confused indecision when confronted by a wall or two of motorcycle related gear.

What made it doubly surprising is that it came from Richard Lawrence, late of Darbi Accessories Ltd in Petone and now Parts Manager at TSS Motorcycles in Alicetown, Lower Hutt. He's quietly spoken, affable, incredibly helpful, and one of those "all round nice guys" except he's not because he's tall and thin.

A closer read revealed that Continental Tyres are in the midst of promoting their Sport Touring tyre, the aforementioned "Motion" (actually ContiMotion), and were selling sets at $380 a pair! Given that I had just chewed about 3 months worth of wear out of my previous set of tyres in one weekend on the South Island's barely used and quite coarse roads I had been checking out a variety of tyre reviews and asking the opinion of people I know who ride sort of like me.

There's a myriad of options available in the "standard biggish to large bike" tyre sizes of 120/70x17 front and 180/55x17 rear in the correct load and speed ratings for my '05 Kawasaki Z750S. Everything from semi-slick to mileage-plus-heavy-load oriented touring tyres. In fact there's so much choice that it's easy to forget to factor issues like wear characteristics, mileage, and price vs. performance into the decision . That can sometimes mean buying something not relevant for the majority of your riding, and putting up with less than optimum performance day to day, just so you can hang it all out on that few and far between perfect Sunday afternoon. To add to the confusion, it's pretty difficult to try before you buy.

Rather than confuse myself further, I decided to simply trust Richard and order a set. Once I discovered that a good mate who'd been using Continental Road Attacks for years had switched to ContiMotions I was quite content that I'd made the right choice.

It always rains when you get new tyres, right? Something I've found over time is that if a tyre can be persuaded to shed release agent on a cold wet road, we're going to get on fine. Tick that one off for the ContiMotions, especially gently slithering my way home successfully

Thankfully the weather cleared up rather quickly and my scrub in ride to Toppy's Cafe in Martinborough couldn't have been better. First impressions were of a quick but neutral steering front with a very precise "set" to a given angle of lean. Once in a turn, no effort is required to maintain the selected turn radius.

Motorway riding revealed a much improved quality of ride over the previous Sports oriented tyres I had fitted to the Z750, which were all about transmitting every last skerrick of feedback to the rider. Great if you're on your ear and giving it some welly. A little unnerving at times when droning along urban roads.

Hitting the Rimutaka Hill road revealed another delightful feature of the ContiMotion tyre. The carcass of the front tyre acts in concert with the rather basic front suspension of the Z750 rather than forcing it to react to every bump and gouge in the road surface like a stiff-walled sports oriented tyre can. Braking on rippled corner entries can provoke an "out of sync" feeling from the front end, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the less stiff construction of the ContiMotion front allowed the suspension and tyre to track the road surface rather than jarring and "hanging in air" sensation I used to experience from the front end. Bear in mind that we're talking about changing from a sports tyre designed to be tortured to a sports touring tyre designed to cover a range of compromises and change in feel makes sense.

From talking to other riders using the ContiMotion tyre I knew that I wouldn't see the "furring" or "balling" on the edge of the tread after a spirited ride that you can expect from nominally "stickier" rubber, but I was surprised at how well the Motions did stick on the way home, after they'd been scrubbed in. I aimed at potholes and surface irregularities, braked late and hard, got on the gas earlier than normal, anything to see if I could find inconsistent responses or a propensity to break loose under provocation.

They may not be a track tyre, but for a Sports Tourer owner, especially in the budget end of the spectrum, you'd be hard pressed to find a tyre with such an inherent blend of stability, precision, light steering and an almost "buttery" ride. All that and supreme value too. To be honest I was nervous about moving away from brands that I've trusted and travelling deeper into the sports touring tyre range, but a few hundred kilometers over mixed road conditions and I can stop justifying my choice on price alone.

Looks good, so it must be quite expensive.
No, not at all. Even though the initial cost might be a bit higher than off-the-shelf products, in the long term our products are very cost effective

It is still expensive if they lose them.
That is right, but they will not lose them. As it is a personalised product which is more comfortable for hours of wear, the employee will look after their earplugs. In reality it is less then one percent that ever gets lost. There is also the option to have a cord attached between the earplugs to prevent ‘dropping’ when removed from the ear. A clipped pouch is provided for storage when the earplugs are not in use.

What are the benefits for my company?
- Better compliance from employees, as they will like to use Insta-Mold earplugs as the skin-to-skin protection creates no pressure points on the inner ear (as with foam plugs) or externally on the side of the head (as with earmuffs).

I carry an elbow in my jacket pocket these days.

It saves me having to lie down on the ground to check the pressures on a lot of modern motorcycles.

With so many bikes now having 200 section rear tyres the critical task of checking the rear can involve a convoluted 'swiggle' with potentially stripped threads on valve stems. It's just hard to get the air gun inside the wheels, not to mention the seepage.

These units are $15 and in stock at motomail and save a lot of trouble.

I can also vouch that it will save you a lot of unpacking if you have it handy to show the customs guy if you are traveling by plane to a job. Show them BEFORE your kit goes through the x-ray machine.

REV-IT RADAR JACKET

I was riding back over the Western Causeway and got stuck in one of those heavy showers that blow down off the Waitakeris. I got soaked.
The waterproofing ability of my old Touring jacket had gone - after 6 very good years and a lot of miles.
I’ll give it a wash and re-treatment, but it’s a bit road weary and ready to be classified as ‘Adventure Riding kit’ – where a bit of mud and grunge doesn’t matter.
Back on the Western I was cold, said ‘stuff this’ and took the Motomail exit with memories of the Rev-it Adventure Riding Jacket I had borrowed for the Can-Am Spyder test.
I tried some of the Adventure Jackets on, but just wasn’t as comfortable with the thermal liners in place as I was in Radar model, that I rode away wearing.
The Radar has been cut as a Touring or Regular fit.
It’s shaped to be at its best when sitting on a motorcycle with a mostly upright ergonomic.
Tres comfy. It makes a difference having the pre-shaped arms,
I also really like the three-layer system. The thermal and the waterproof layers are removable; it means that it’s a viable jacket for all seasons. It has large vents that should see it turn into a good hot weather alternative too.
The waterproof liner zips out and stows in a pocket at the rear.
Cuffs are fastened with Velcro and it has Velcro fastening over the zipper. The collar is adjustable.
The two big storage pockets at front don’t bunch up when seated – even with glasses case in them and it has two interior pockets for phones and gadgets. (and as I was checking the specifications I read that it also has a document pocket – that I haven’t found yet.)
What I have found is that it’s very warm and very comfortable. I’ve been nice and dry and looked pretty fly through the rest of the winter so far.
The recommended retail price is $550.
I'm very happy with it.

BLUETOOTH MULTI INTERPHONE KIT

At last a high end super-range BT (Bluetooth wireless) hands-free communication system for motorcyclists and/or skiers. One that I’ve tried and found works, and works really well.
The BT Multi-Interphone kit can pair ‘rider to rider’ or ‘rider to pillion,’ and can also be used with any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, MP3 or GPS.
The system, imported and distributed by P.H.S. Ltd, offers a 500 metre range at speeds of up to 120km/h I used it on the bike and found that not
only was it easy to install with velcro into the helmets (XL & S) it also worked well in all the terrible weather we experienced on a four-hour ride north of Auckland. Believe me we experienced all four seasons in four hours but because the comms system is a fully weather protected system it carried on working regardless, in fact according to the distributors it will last up to seven hours of talk time before you need to use the mini USB charging lead which comes in addition to a mains powered one.
EASY PEASY
I found it easy to use and my pillion and I could talk to each other at road legal speeds with no problem. Even when our speed crept up a bit we still found the communication acceptable thanks to the wind and speed noisecompensating microphone and the slim fitting speakers.
It does take a few minutes initially to make sure you position the speakers directly over your ears correctly but once they’re in the right place you’re cooking with gas, so to speak!
So, to sum up, this system offers safe riding while talking to your pillion or a friend riding nearby while being nice and compact and perhaps most importantly, glove friendly. Other benefits are auto receiving of cell phone calls and the ability to play stereo music from your mobile phone.
Five stars I say!

AIROH FORCE VISION

The arrival on the local market of the Airoh brand of helmets, courtesy importer Forbes and Davies, has signaled something of a shakeup in the lid stakes here at KR.
First up Pro MXing Dirt tester Ollie was offered one of the ultralight Stelt models to add to his wardrobe, then I was offered a new Force Vision road helmet.
Over the years I’ve tried all sorts of helmets but settled into swapping between a Shoei X-Spirit and the predecessor to Arai’s Viper. Both current lids are due for replacing, something which the arrival of the new Airoh brought into sharp focus.
Airoh is the brand that fi rst came to notice here when our own Ben Townley was signed for his MX2 World Championship-winning year, so we know a bit about the brand and the people behind it. Suffice to say it is a premium brand with premium products with the Force Vision enjoying an ECE2205 safety rating and retailing here for $559.
Fit and finish is snug and comfy and there are plenty of ventilation choices not to mention trick little accessories like the clip-in chin curtain, breath guard etc.
Perhaps the biggest bonus however is the integrated sun-shield which folds up or down at the click of a rocker switch on the left hand side of the base.
I’ve always been a bit dubious of these but as I’ve found the idea works, and works well.
Another new and different feature I’ve come to quite like is the ‘Microtech retention system’ chin-clasp.
Like most motorcycle riders using an old-skool twin D-ring system has become second nature, but you can’t fault the new one with its simple grooved tongue and click-in/click-out clasp.
Fogging has been an issue over the least few (very cold) weeks but I see Airoh offers what they call a ‘Foggy Stop’ kit so I’ll be ordering one of those to help supplement the standard antifog treatment of the 2.2mm thick visor.
I’ll be swapping back and forth from Shoei to Arai to Airoh over the next year and will report back on any further findings at a later date.

ARAI CHASER PHIL READ REPLICA

What a beautiful thing it is. It replaces the Union Jack Viper that saw excellent service on many a KR test bike. The Chaser feels even nicer, seems quieter and is simply a beautiful thing. I know, I know, it's not supposed to be about how it looks, but wow, it's Arai safe, very comfortable and just look at it.
So far I can't comment on the ventilation - too cold for that caper! Fitted with an Irridium Visor if feels light and like you are a million dollars inside.
RRP is $1049 inc GST for a hat that truly stands out.

Whilst Slix have a unique leather look and feel, they breathe and move like traditional denim jeans. Constructed with quality stretch denim, and coated with a wax finish these innovative jeans are made to be worn fitted close to the body and will quickly mould to individual body shapes. Over time, each pair of Slix will age and develop their own unique creases and curves. No two Slix will be alike! Available in both men’s and women’s cuts, Slix are designed to be worn on and off the bike. The fit is lower at the waist than at the back to ensure both comfort and skin coverage whilst riding.
