PH Booters miss Asian Cup berth after drawing Tajikistan

The Philippine men’s football team failed to secure a spot in the AFC Asian Cup after being held to a 1-1 draw by Tajikistan in their final qualifying match on Tuesday at Hisor Central Stadium in Dushanbe.

Needing a victory to advance, the Filipinos instead settled for a stalemate that saw them end their campaign with 14 points, tied with Tajikistan at the top of Group A.

However, the hosts claimed qualification due to a superior goal difference, leaving the Philippines in second place.

The Philippines had not returned to the Asian Cup since their historic debut in 2019.

Midfielder Raphael Obermair provided an early spark in his national team debut, scoring in the 19th minute. He converted a cross from Randy Schneider with a precise low shot to give the visitors the lead.

Tajikistan answered before the break, as Shereddin Boboev struck from outside the penalty area in the 40th minute. His attempt took a slight deflection, wrong-footing goalkeeper Kevin Ray Hansen and leveling the score.

The second half saw both teams searching for a decisive goal. The Philippines came close late in the match, with Jesper Nyholm forcing a save in the 85th minute, while Jarvey Gayoso missed a final opportunity after sending his volley over the crossbar.

With their qualification bid falling short, the Philippine squad will now turn its attention to the ASEAN Hyundai Cup scheduled from July to August.
