Eating more fruits, vegetables has no effect on weight loss

Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham have discovered that having more fruits and vegetables in a person's diet will have no effect on weight loss, which is contrary to the often recommended notion of eating more of them to lose weight.

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on June 25, also found out that while eating more fruits and vegetables will not help a person lose more weight, it will also not make the person gain weight.

Kaiser said that increasing the serving size of fruit does not increase a person's weight, which makes eating fruit a very effective way of acquiring the body's daily requirements of vitamins and fiber.

Kaiser adds that to lose weight while keeping a healthy diet, the best way is to reduce total caloric intake, not just increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, as according to popular belief.

The MyPlate Initiative of the United States Department of Agriculture recommends a daily serving requirement of one and a half to two cups of fruit and two to three cups of vegetables for adults. And no study has ever reported lower mortality among those with higher TV viewing time, he noted.

The researchers analyzed data gathered from 13,284 adults who had graduated from the university beginning in 1999. They wanted to examine any associations between three types of sedentary behavior and risk of death from any cause.

The study team followed the participants for an average of eight years and found 97 deaths, 19 of them from cardiovascular causes, 46 from cancer and 32 from other causes.

Compared to the people who sat watching an hour or less of television a day, those who watched two hours a day had a 40 percent higher risk of death. For those who watched three or more hours, the risk was two-fold higher.

I've Skipped Makeup Almost Every Day While Staying at Home, and It's Changed My Point of View

Once upon a time, when our world wasn't staying at home (remember those days?), I would wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed, straighten my hair, do my makeup, and go to work. In fact, if you swap work with school, it's a routine I've practiced for the past 10-plus years of my life. Sure, there'd be days I'd skip the flat iron, and there were certain a.m. classes I was not putting on makeup for, but you get the gist. Almost every day for the last decade, I've looked at a done-up version of myself in the mirror, and still thought I had a healthy relationship with my bare skin. After all, I didn't need makeup. I just preferred it — or at least, that's what I'd tell myself.

Makeup gave me confidence. From the compliments like "You have such pretty eyes" to "Wow, your skin is glowing" (cough, thank you highlighter and setting spray, cough), I have experienced firsthand the power of a full face. In high school, I was dependent on it. Whether it was to hide my terrible acne or to bronze my face like a Cheeto, I used to think, "God, I can't imagine showing someone how I look without it." In college, I loosened up a bit, because A) my skin cleared and B) no one went to morning classes looking good (it's like you were uncool if you tried).

But in baring my makeup-free skin came the "She's pretty, but have you seen her without makeup?" comments from other students and even "friends." Don't get me wrong, I wasn't the only girl in school hearing these insults. We would talk about how it didn't faze us, how the people who said it were lacking confidence themselves, and how we were strong enough to look past it. We comforted each other, but if I'm being honest with myself, I was never truly confident in my own skin.

It took a global pandemic for me to gain the confidence I needed in my makeup-free skin.

Does this mean I'll go back to work makeup-free? Probably not. I still love makeup and miss my daily routine. However, I now have a new outlook on my non-glammed-up face, and that version is beautiful too.

Deputy Zhang Wenxi, Party secretary of the village of Chenyu in the provincial capital Wuhan, told Xi how the village people fought the epidemic and the gaps that were exposed during the process.

"As President Xi said, hospitals and communities are the two front lines in the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak. We must find ways to fix those gaps in epidemic control at the grassroots level," Zhang said.

"I was most impressed by how President Xi urged Hubei to fully implement the central government's policies especially designed to help Hubei's economy to recover swiftly. I think it will greatly boost Hubei people's confidence in getting through the tough time," said deputy Song Qingli, a farmer from Hefeng county.

The president also asked about the local average annual income as he talked about poverty alleviation efforts in the county, Song said.

"It shows that seeing people living a good life is important for President Xi," Song said.

Xi also knew about the contribution and sacrifices made by people in Hubei and Wuhan, which were hit hardest by the epidemic in the country, the deputies said.

"President Xi's joining the panel discussion of the Hubei delegation is already an encouragement for Hubei people. I believe the province can and will recover from the epidemic with the support from the central government," Luo said

San Francisco fire destroys Fisherman’s Wharf warehouse early Saturday

Firefighters battle a massive blaze that erupted at a warehouse on Pier 45 in San Francisco early Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A fire engulfed a warehouse on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf early Saturday, sending a thick plume of smoke over the waterfront and threatening to spread to a historic World War II–era ship before firefighters brought the flames under control.

No injuries have been reported and firefighters were making multiple searches to ensure no one was inside the building on Pier 45, San Francisco Fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter told reporters from the scene.

The warehouse, which holds fish processing equipment and a few offices, is typically unoccupied at night but homeless people have been seen in buildings and warehouses in the area, Baxter said.

“That is something of grave concern, that is why we’re actively trying to confirm if anybody saw anybody in this building,” he told KGO-TV.

“To our knowledge ... nobody is supposed to be in the building and we are hoping ... that there is no victim,” he said.

The fire broke out before dawn and tore through the warehouse near the end of the concrete pier, causing its walls to collapse, Baxter said. The first fire truck to respond to the scene sustained some damage.

More than 130 firefighters fought the flames, with some using ladder trucks to drench the warehouse from above. A fire boat was used to protect the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a liberty ship that stormed Normandy on D-Day in 1944. The ship docks by Pier 45 and is a popular tourist attraction.

“Our firefighters absolutely saved the SS Jeremiah O’Brien during this fire as flames were pinching on the side of this vessel,” Baxter said.

Coast Guard crew members and police assisted by keeping other vessels away from the pier.

Fire investigators were assessing any damage to the pier and were looking into the cause of the blaze, Baxter said.

Both Ben and Christopher set up a trap for Madison and records of her crimes where she tried to kill Jake before she was arrested but she escaped and kidnapped Amy as her hostage to force Ben to save his girlfriend. When Ben arrived, Madison gave him one last chance to admit his love for her. When Ben refused, Madison attempted to kill the handcuffed and chair-bound Amy by shoving her into the swimming pool and Ben watched in horror before rushing to save her, but Madison attacked them with a pool cleaning net before Ben pulled it into the pool causing Madison, who still didn't know how to swim to drown.
