Canada Day Dessert

In preparation for the holiday we went strawberry picking yesterday.

This is my granddaughter. She helped with the picking and also the eating.

I love an easy summer dessert

All you need for this one is a cake. I used an angel food cake from the store, fresh strawberries, and whipping cream or ice cream.

To make the syrup take some of the strawberries and chop them up and place them in a pot with a little sugar and a little water. I cooked them until they were soft and then pressed them through a sieve. The syrup thickens a little as it cools

Place a piece of cake on a plate add whipped cream, strawberries and pour on some syrup.

We will have a quiet celebration this year.

Easy Canada Day Wreath

This year I have been trying to make things using materials I have on hand.

In early Spring my granddaughter and I built a cold frame to grow lettuce and radishes. We built it from bricks and a window we already had. We're still enjoying the lettuce and pick almost every day.

COVID19 has me staying home and avoiding stores as much as possible.

We hosted a July 1st party last year, our first summer in this home, so I had a few things left over.

I used these scarves that I bought at the dollar store to tie around potted plants. I also used them as tiebacks for the curtains on the gazebo.

I washed them at the end of summer and put them away.

To make the wreath I used four of the scarves. Two red and two white.

I also used straight pins to secure the scarves to the wreath form and some florist's wire to form a looped hanger.

The elastics were used to hold the loops for the bow.

Starting with one end of a scarf I gathered it a bit and secured it to the wreath frame with straight pins.

Wrap the scarf around the wreath covering the pins.

Continue wrapping and add the second scarf using the pins to secure.

Tuck the ends of the scarf under an adjacent loop and secure with pins.

I looped the white scarves in my hand and held the loops in place with an elastic adding an additional elastic as needed.

I pinned the bow to the wreath. I then made a hanging loop of the wire and pushed it into the wreath form.

This wreath is super quick and easy.

If you don't have scarves use strips of fabric or ribbon.

Late Spring, Early Summer Decorating

I have lightened up my decorating for Spring and Summer.

I decided to pare down and use the "less is more" idea of decorating.

I can use blue and white Chinoiserie pottery in any season.

It just goes with everything.

I haven't seen my Mother's Cranberry Glass in a few years. It has been packed in a box and I decided it was time to bring it out.

The third colour in this scheme is a beautiful green.

Spring green makes even velvet pillows look light and refreshing.

There is nothing too visually heavy on the mantel or elsewhere in the room.

I like how it all comes together.

Set the Table - Waiting for Spring

As I sit here writing this post it is snowing and the weather report is calling for snow all day today and all day tomorrow.

The best thing to do is set the table for Spring. I need a little diversion from winter.

We have tulips, but not from the garden.

We had to get them from the grocery store.

This set of dishes reminds me of Spring, but I think they would work in Summer or Winter too.

I do like these napkins with these dishes.

The colours and pattern work together.

The hutch is also ready for Spring.

St. Patrick's Day - Harbinger of Spring

It is such a pleasure to celebrate St. Patrick's Day each year.

Although it doesn't fall on the first day of Spring, it is a reminder that the seasons are about to change.

I look forward to bringing out my favourite Irish china like this Belleek plate. The Aynsley cup and saucer were made in England.

I am always on the lookout for more pieces in thrift shops and auctions.

I loved the way the sun was streaming through the window on to the oxalis plant and small chair.

The pot was chosen for its colours. It resembles colourful European tiles.

Set the Table - Saltbox Houses on Jelly Bean Row

I think it is time to set a wintery table. It's also another chance to use one of my lighted tin houses.

I found these plates at Pier 1 Imports before Christmas.

Immediately, they made me think of the Saltbox houses on Jelly Bean Row in St. John's Newfoundland.

The set consists of four salad plates with each plate having a different scene.

They are so colourful and whimsical.

This is Jelly Bean Row.

No wonder I liked these plates so much.

The stainless steel flatware is not quite visible, but it looks very much like galvanized metal. I have left a link in the "Source List".

I love the wintery scenes and vibrant colours.

The napkins were made from Batik cloth. I like using Batik for napkins because the pattern is identical on both sides of the fabric.

In keeping with the theme, the napkin rings are galvanised tin houses.

I checked the Pier 1 Imports website. Unfortunately, these dishes are no longer available. I couldn't find them in either of the stores that are near me either.

Winter Decorating

The house always looks a little bare after the Christmas tree and all the decorations are put away for another year.

A few winter decorations add a bit of interest.

Sometimes I just rearrange some of the Christmas things and put away anything that looks like it is only to be used for Christmas.

I am using a lot of silvery greys, blues, and frosted greenery inside the house this winter.

All of the greenery on the mantel was left up after Christmas. It is faux so dropping needles are not a problem.

I removed all of the ornaments and added a few pinecones.
This arrangement will stay here until I am ready to see some spring decor.

The candles stay out too. The candle holders on the mantel are green and can work for practically any season.

Apart from the mantel, I prefer a clean and uncluttered look.

The lighted galvanised tin houses were used as a dining table centrepiece over the holidays.

I like that they are plain and not painted to represent a specific season.
I think I will use them more that way and at different times of the year.

I have been having fun moving them around. I placed one house on top of a stack of books on top of the coffee table. I like that the colours of the books and the house blend so well together.

Here the houses are used as a centrepiece on the dining table. The houses are separated by live greenery placed in small vases of water. The branches will keep for weeks if they are placed in water after being cut.

These tin houses will be seen again, I am sure.

I removed the white cover from the sofa to reveal the blue upholstery underneath.

We like to use lots of wool throws in the living room and a silvery grey pillow cover adds to the other silvery grey details in the room.

Outside, the bench on the front porch has kept some of the decor from Christmas too. The blanket, pinecones and snowflake are perfect for winter.

Lanterns are also a favourite of mine for outdoor winter decoration.

The scarf wreath was made last winter and is being pressed into service again this year.

Outside we are using white with touches of green.

Wishing You A Bright 2019

Fair Meadow Place would like to wish all our readers a healthy and prosperous New Year.

It has been a while since I last posted. I moved houses at the beginning of November. After unpacking and setting up the new residence Christmas was fast approaching plus plans and arrangements were being made for renovations.

I really wanted to write a couple of Christmas posts, but there was just no time or energy on my part.

We had a beautiful Christmas and New Year.

Renovations on the house started December 27 and are well underway. They should be completed by the end of January 2019.

I will post on the changes being made to the house later.

As I write this post, the Christmas tree has been taken down and all the decorations are packed and waiting to go into storage.

I have a few ideas for some new posts this year so stay tuned.

I am looking forward to getting back to doing all the things I enjoy. 2018 was an incredibly busy year and I hope 2019 will be more restful.

Set the Table - Perfect Fall Napkins

When I found these napkins, I just couldn't put them down.

There was something about the rich bronze background, warm fall colours, and coppery pinks that got to me.

To me, they were the perfect fall napkins.

I knew they would pair with the tone in the pink napkins I already had.

I decided a bronze charger, white plates with interesting borders, and one plate in a sort of burnt orange would bring it all together.

More warmth was added with copper stemmed wine glasses and some fall chrysanthemums.

The maple leaf candleholders were made by a friend, Colleen Leonard.

I just love them and the colour adds to the warmth of the table.

Autumn Inside Outside

Autumn is a time of year when we begin to turn our gaze indoors when we start to think of gathering around the hearth, warm blankets, hearty meals, candles and sweaters.

We are not entirely ready to stay inside, though, and there is still a lot to see and do outside.

For so many it is a new beginning, a new year. It is the start of the school year.

I am usually sad to see the end of summer, however this year I have welcomed the cooler temperatures of fall.

A visit to a local roadside vegetable stand is always a must for me.

This is Linton's Farm Market

I look forward to the harvest and the glorious colours of autumn.

Back inside it is time to pull out the plaid and tartan wool throws and have some fun decorating with faux and real pumpkins.

The blankets are fun to use outside too.

Ontario nectarines have been very sweet and delicious this year.

We have harvested a few pumpkins from our patch.

These are just some of the white and green ones. There are still lots more to pick.

The plates from front to back are a glass pumpkin plate from Bowrings, Baldero Pinheiro Grape pattern (I have just the one plate), and Spice Road Ginger from Pier 1 Imports.

Set the Table - Fall Luncheon

I so enjoy these Harvest Pumpkin salad plates that I picked up earlier this year on clearance.

I have listed sources at the end of the post.

I thought they were discontinuing this pattern, but they are still available this year, but not on clearance.

Each plate in the set is different so that each place setting on the table is unique.

The Cambria luncheon plates pair nicely with the salads.

I have also used matching Jacquard placemats and napkins in a similar green as the Cambria plates.

The centrepiece is very simple.

I cut branches from my Canadian Red Maple just starting to show tinges of red on the leaves.

I also cut branches from the Rose of Sharon.

The branches were laid out on the table. Three faux pumpkins were placed on top of the branches.

It doesn't get any easier than that.

Some of the Rose of Sharon is still blooming so that there are little bits of pink or white here and there.

I love the Rose of Sharon, but find that I have to remove all the spent blooms at the end of the season. The seeds go everywhere and would populate the entire yard with little Rose of Sharon shrubs.

Decorating with Brown Glazed Stoneware Crocks

I am really smitten with these two brown glazed stoneware crocks.

They were a recent purchase from Scott and Richard at the WILD garden in Cannington, Ontario.

These pots attracted me immediately because I remember my mother had one.

Scott was uncertain as to whether the pots were actually flower pots because there are no drainage holes.

He wondered if they were perhaps butter crocks. Except for their shape, that could make sense as well.

I did a little research online. There weren't a lot of pictures of these pots but there were a few.

I didn't see any mention of them being butter crocks, which is just as well, as it was claimed that this type of glaze is a brown lead glaze.

I have not found any information that would collaborate on the glaze claim.

There is some bubbling in the glaze, as the description suggested.

They were not bought with the intention of keeping butter or any food in them.

Just to be on the safe side, I won't lick them either.

To me, they are purely decoration.

I have learned over the years that vintage and antique pieces can be made with materials that would not be acceptable today.

As a baby, I slept in a crib painted with lead paint. Somehow I survived that and went on to live a full and active life.

I am not concerned with a little lead in the glaze.

I will happily pile things in them or place plants in them.

Set the Table - Autumn in Blue & Grey

I sometimes like to use colours

that are not traditional for fall decorating.

Blue is a favourite colour for me in decorating.

An untraditional colour scheme of blue and grey have been paired to achieve a table that is autumnal but a bit different.

The centrepiece is a collection of painted dollar store pumpkins and blue velvet pumpkins resting on a small piece of cedar rail fencing.

Lanterns fill in some of the spaces and add a little height.

The foundation for the table is a wool throw in Muted Blue Stewart tartan.

On top of the throw are round bronze-coloured chargers.

The plates are square and we used a dinner plate and salad plate in grey called Martillo Fog.

On top of the grey dinner plate another dinner plate, Adrianna, is placed at right angles.

The salad plate is placed at right angles to the second dinner plate.

The stack of plates is topped off with a white pumpkin soup bowl.

Grey linen napkins and stainless steel flatware.

I like that the chargers, lanterns and a couple of brown pumpkins pick up the light brown colour in the throw.

I love the combination of pattern and understated colour.

Is It Pumpkin Time Yet?

This is Maximus who was born in the barn next to the pumpkin patch about four years ago.

He knows about pumpkins.

The pumpkin mounds are huge this year.

They are more than waist high and have spread up to twenty feet across.

It's a good thing we have lots of space for them.

There have been a lot of flowers but we should check on their progress.

They are still a little small and green.

Our Irish neighbour likes to call the unripe green ones Irish pumpkins.

Some of them are supposed to be green, though.

The white pumpkins are starting to grow and look good.

The orange pumpkins are not nearly ready.

Some of these will be the smaller pie pumpkins

They all need more time.

It is still early. In about a month they should be ready.

Set the Table - Mixing Antique & Contemporary China

What fun it is at this time of year to set up a table for two in the garden.

We recently acquired an antique/vintage set of dishes that we like very much.

These dishes came from The Wild Garden in Cannington, Ontario. This is a floral shop that also carries antiques and gifts. I love what Scott has done with his shop.

I will provide contact information at the bottom of the post.

I did some searching online to find a pattern name and possible manufacturing dates but came up with nothing for this particular pattern.

The back stamp is a little hard to see, but it says Made in Egland H&K Tunstall.

There are many patterns under the Tunstall name.

I do enjoy pairing vintage or antique china with today's patterns.

I like how these two patterns go so nicely together even though the style and textures are very different.

When bringing two different sets like these together, find a common theme or colour.
In this display, I used colour to bring them together. The gold/yellow edge of the plate plays nicely with the same colour on the solid plates and napkins.

The set came with a couple of small pitchers that we used for individual flower arrangements.

We used vintage parfait glasses as water goblets.

I can only tell you that they came from the thrift store. I have no idea who the manufacturer was.

We used a mix of vintage silverplate flatware.

I'm moving and most of my tablecloths have been packed.

The foundation for the setting is a Pashmina scarf.

Selling a House - Staging Part 2

This is the third and final post in this series. Getting Organized for a Move and Selling a House - Staging Part 1 are the first two posts in the series.

I will leave links to both posts near the end.

Once the house is on the market it is important to try to keep it as clean and neat as possible.

Beds have to be made every day.

The bed in the master bedroom above had nine pillows. Yes, it seemed a bit excessive to me as well, but I made sure that every morning they were placed perfectly.

The walls in the master bedroom were painted Abalone by Benjamin Moore. I used this colour a lot in the house. It is very easy to live with but can be a bit of a chameleon. Depending on the light, it can read as very light blue, light grey or pale putty.

I wanted the room to be peaceful and restful. The bedding is the lightest grey and the accent colour lilac/pink.

This bathroom is also painted Abalone and the accent colour is pink. The only change here was new white towels.

Sinks, taps, counters, and toilets have to be wiped down every day.

Garbage will have to be removed when you leave the house.

I carried a plastic bag around with me while I was getting ready in the mornings just for garbage. I would leave it next to the door to remove on my way out of the house.

My office has a black wall, Black Magic by Sherwin Williams.

The other walls in the office are painted Sherwin William's, Cotton White.

Bookcases should be cleaned off and styled or removed altogether

I use a china cabinet in the office to store and easily find ribbons and other crafting supplies.

I made sure that everything in the cabinet was organized and presentable.

The guest room is painted in Sand Dune by Sherwin Williams.

The room has teal accents and is softened with white bedding and a Laura Ashley quilt.

Vignettes are kept to a minimum.
This one in the kitchen is in the accent colours of navy and green.

The table in the kitchen was set in blue and white.

The mantel and coffee table received small vignettes. We used a few faux green plants throughout.

Mirrors help bounce the light around and make a room appear spacious.

Place settings in the dining room were staged in the accent colours of navy and green.

Staging Tips Summary

Plan your staging and enlist the help of a professional stager if you feel you need some help.

Use a neutral pallet for walls and large pieces of furniture. Sofas and chairs can be covered if their colour does not go with your overall staging plan.

Stick with a colour scheme as much as possible. Repeat accent colours throughout adjoining rooms.

Remove and store pieces furniture that may suggest rooms are overcrowded.

Keep everything clean and polished. Wipe down bathrooms and kitchens daily.

Vacuum and damp mop floors often.

Keep vignettes and accent items to a minimum. Less is definitely more here. You are showing your home and not all the cute things you have. Place accent pieces so that they suggest a possibility to a buyer.

Fresh flowers are nice but don't knock yourself out trying to put them in every room. We used one small fresh flower arrangement in the kitchen. Use longlasting flowers such as mums, orchids, hydrangeas so that you don't have to replace them daily.

Clean out fridges so buyers can see how spacious they are.

Remove pets and their paraphernalia including litter boxes before each viewing. Arranging to have pets stay elsewhere during the sale is a good idea.

Remove garbage daily.

Keep lawns and gardens groomed. Use a leaf blower to quickly remove debris from porches and walkways.

Put personal items away, ie. brushes, toothbrushes, washcloths, and dirty laundry. Use a box to store your personal items and towels and keep the box out of sight.

If you are having multiple open houses on the same weekend try to be away the entire weekend. It will be less stressful.

Initiate a plan and follow through with a daily cleaning, straightening, and fluffing routine.

Hopefully, your home will sell quickly so that you can relax a little.

Having your home in top shape will increase buyer interest, but it will also depend on the market in your area at the time you choose to sell. In my area, early spring(March) is a good time to put a house on the market and then again at the end of summer.

I missed the early springtime slot and managed to get on the market by mid-June. The house sold in three and a half weeks.

Set the Table - Summery April Cornell Linens

I have been wanting to do this post for some time and I also wanted to shoot it outside. We have had rain almost every day so we decided to set it up in the dining room.

April Cornell is not an associate of mine. I bought some of the linens, like them, and decided to write a post featuring them.

I will leave a link at the bottom of the post.

For the base, we started with the Angelic Embroidered Tablecloth in Ecru. Mine is 60" x 90".

I topped the Embroidered cloth with a cotton Rose Nouveau 54" x 54" cloth in Orchid. Orchid refers to the background colour.

I love the combination of the two cloths. It looks a little romantic with the ruffle showing under the topper.

It also reminds me of a lady's slip showing from the bottom of her dress.

Next, we used a white charger that came from Walmart last year plus a dinner and salad plate from a set of Butterfly Meadow Hydrangea by Lenox.

The clear crystal glass at the top is antique Waterford. I don't know the name of the pattern on the green goblet. The green goblets were a thrift store find last year.

The napkins are also from April Cornell in Rose Nouveau Orchid pattern.

The beaded napkin rings matched so well and they came from Bowrings many years ago.

I chose this vintage flowery silver plate flatware because I thought they would tie in nicely.

The pattern is Evening Star by Community.

The flowers came from my garden. It was lucky that they pretty much went with the colour scheme.

The urn holding the flowers is one of a pair that was a recent find at a store I like to frequent called The Dark Horse. The store is located in Sunderland, Ontario.

I love the French Country details on these urns. I think I will be using them often.

The urn is very wide at the top. I arranged the flowers in my hand and then wrapped an elastic band around the stems and tightening it so that the flowers would remain upright in the urn.

Once they were placed into the urn I fluffed them and added a few loose stems around the bottom to fill in the empty spaces.

I will sometimes use garden herbs in arrangements. You can see the dill in this picture. Dill will self-seed and come up throughout my garden every year.

Selling a House - Staging Part 1

Once the purging, packing, painting and cleaning and repairs have been completed it is time to stage your home in preparation to sell.

This is the part where you will see all of your hard work come together.

Check your curb appeal!

You don't want buyers to take one look at your house and drive away.

Make sure the outside of your house has no peeling paint and that the windows are clean.

Keep the grass cut and trimmed. Repeat as often as needed for as long as your house is on the market.

Weed the beds and add mulch. Keep the plants watered.

Add pops of colour with annuals.

I chose the same colour flowers for both the front and back yards.

The bench received a fresh coat of black paint to match the front door and pots.

If you have a leaf blower, use it to blow away any debris that collects on steps, walkways, and patios. It is quicker than sweeping.

You will want your property to look well tended.

This is your chance to make a great first impression so that they will want to see the inside too.

Once you have their attention wow them again with a great entranceway and foyer.

Put away all the shoes, hats and keys.

Give buyers a visual delight with a great bench or table and some artwork or a mirror.

Keep the space uncluttered so that the area seems large.

This bench holds a couple of stacked boxes tied with an old leather belt and one pillow.

Above paint colours are from Benjamin Moore

We chose a neutral pallet with a couple of summery looking accent colours on the main floor of the house.

The front hall is painted Brown Horse.

Kitchen walls are painted Silver Fox. Cabinets and ceiling are Lacey Pearl.

This is a small kitchen. Too much contrast in a small and busy area can be a bit overwhelming and causes the eye to bounce around.

I kept the kitchen calm by keeping the cabinets, counters, and appliances all white.

We used accent colours minimally in the kitchen.

The old linoleum floor in the kitchen was replaced with Allure tiles that matched the colour scheme. This change alone made such a difference in the kitchen and it is fairly inexpensive.

I removed a larger table and put this smaller table in its place. We wanted the breakfast nook to appear spacious.

The kitchen sink was replaced with a larger sink, new taps and counter.

We left space on one counter for the brochure and feature sheets provided by my realtor.

Prospective buyers can feel free to take one with them.

Otherwise, counters were kept clean

The patio is visible through the glass doors in the kitchen.

We were consistent with blue and green accent colours on the patio.

The living room and dining room are open and adjacent to each other.

The parquet flooring has been down for over twenty years. I had considered replacing all of the floorings on the main level with wood flooring.
I am glad I didn't. It was not worth the expense. That change would not give me a good return on investment.

Instead of replacing the floor I used a product called Rejuvenate Satin Restorer

I don't have a before and after picture, but the difference is notable. The product fills small scratches and brings back the shine. I used two coats here.

The best thing is that it is easy to use. I did it myself.
There is a wait time between coats

I used three coats of the Restorer in the front hallway. My office received two coats.

It is recommended that Rejuvenate All Floors Cleaner is used in preparation.
I followed the recommendation and used this product as well.

All together I used two bottles of cleaner and about one and a half bottles of the restorer.

I tried the cleaner on the bathroom stone floors. The grout always looks dirty. It did a pretty good job.

This company also has a grout cleaner, which I have not used.

One other product that I used was Rejuvenate Wood Floor Markers. I didn't use them on the floors, however. I used them to touch up marks on the bathroom cabinets.

I'm afraid this post has run longer than it should.

I will be back with staging in different areas of the home and share some vignettes and tips.

Getting Organised For a Move

It has been too long since we last posted and I have missed the blog.

2018 has been an unusual year and I expect that will continue until the end of this year.

In January I thought about moving.

What a monumental task to even think about. I have lived in this house for twenty-three years.

My children were 9-years-old and 12-years-old when we moved here.

They have grown up and flown away.

In January my daughter approached me with the idea of moving into a multi-generational home.

(dreams of grandeur)

Not a bad idea, I thought, but it would have to be the right home just like the one above.

It would have to be a home with completely separate living quarters and separate entrances, if possible.

I mean separate kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms, and storage areas.

I really wondered if such a home could be found.

Yikes! This is too scary. This is not the home, I'm thinking.

We do not want a run-down place that would take a lot of work and money and time to bring up to standards.

We don't mind some work, but it pretty much has to meet most of our needs at the start.

Did I mention that I am not planning on living in a Granny Suite?

That's a good thing to get off my chest right from the beginning.

So the hunt began and so did getting organised.

Who knew I had so much stuff. I was still storing my kid's things. I had things from my parents home, and I had my own things.

Things to Do When Selling Your Home

1. Get Organised

The first thing I did was go out and buy a day planner.
It has lots of space to schedule appointments plus "To Do" lists and this one also has extra sheets of paper that can be removed or moved to a different section.

I started making lists of things I needed to do and areas of the home that could use some attention.

The notebook I would use later once a new home was found.
I would record the measurements of each room plus paint and tile colours, and flooring. I recorded almost anything I thought would be important information down the line.
At first, I just had the overall sizes of the rooms and later I would go back and take perimeter measurements of each room that would include door, closet and window placements as well as ceiling height.

Next, I transferred those measurements into a small book of graph paper.
This is the simplest way to map out your rooms so that you know exactly where every architectural element is in each room.

From there it is easy to draw each piece of furniture into the rooms.
It is so helpful to know which pieces of furniture will actually fit.

The graph paper is useful for making a plan view of each room, but elevation drawings can also be done on graph paper. For instance, if you want to see how your bookcases would look on a particular wall, they can be drawn in as though you were standing in the room looking at them.
You will record ceiling heights as well as well as the wall measurements. Again, this is helpful for furniture placement.

If you have furniture that won't fit, it can be given away, sold, or put into storage for future use.

Even though I can draft my plan views and elevations, I still find graph paper the easiest and quickest way.

There are online apps that can be downloaded to do this too, but really, I like paper and pencil.

I put the drafting board away until I want to make real changes such as designing a kitchen or bathroom.

2. Purge and Pack

You may not move for months, but start purging.

It really is amazing how much stuff we have. If you haven't moved in years then there are probably things you haven't used in years that you are just storing somewhere in the house.

You will have to make a decision about everything you have in your home.

If you are downsizing you may not have room for some things.

Purging takes time. It doesn't happen overnight so start as soon as you can.

Anything you will no longer keep can be donated to a charity, sold or given away. Taking it to the dump is the last resort.

Don't stockpile. Remove things right away so that you don't have piles of stuff you no longer want.

We know a man who will pick up old metal and electronics for FREE. He came twice to my house.

Have a supply of boxes. If you are purchasing boxes find a size that is manageable for most things, not too big and not too small.

I used plastic bins for cloth items like blankets, pillows and clothing.

Start packing off-season items, clothing and sports equipment.

It is okay to use closets for storage, but don't stuff them. Try to make them look spacious by removing and packing clothing.

Pack books, cookbooks. Anything you have two or more of can be packed.

You will have to pack anyway, so you might as well start now.

3. Get the Help You Need

I knew I would need some help from professionals such as an electrician, handyman, etc.
Fortunately, my daughter was a great help with the purge part and my son helped too by taking out of season things away such as the large snow blower.

Here is a List of Who I Hired

Handyman: Minor repairs, painting, fixing the fence and gate, installing a dishwasher, new kitchen floor, and replacing broken tiles.

Electrician: Switching out light fixtures (I didn't want to leave the antique fixtures), changing a ground fault plug and replacing two fixtures that no longer worked, and running a wire for the dishwasher.

Counter Installer: I ordered a new counter which he installed. He also installed the new sink and taps.

Garage Door Repairman: The garage door needed some repair and reinforcement.

Realtor: I cannot stress enough the value of a good real estate agent. They can help in so many ways throughout the process of buying and selling from listing your present home to finding a new home and everything in between such as staging and hosting open houses.

They also have a realistic idea of the housing market and can research and guide you to reasonable expectations. For instance, my house was worth more than I had thought.

Furnace Cleaner: It is a good idea to have your furnace cleaned and inspected. Give a copy of this receipt to your realtor so prospective buyers can see the furnace is in good working order.

Professional Carpet Cleaner: If you have carpets in your home it is important to have them professionally cleaned. Yes, you can go to the grocery store and rent a carpet cleaner for much less, but they won't be as clean.

Window Cleaners: I had the windows cleaned just prior to the house going on the market so that they would shine.

Stager: Even a seasoned interior decorator can find value in a professional stager. I had removed some larger pieces of furniture out of the house and rearranged a few things and removed a lot of bits and pieces, but I really liked having a fresh eye look at my home. She had some good suggestions and used most of my furniture and accessories. We removed some of my art and she brought in some different pieces of art that were larger. She did a great job and the place looks great.

Cleaning Lady: I didn't actually hire her. My realtor provided three hours of cleaning from this lady. If you are feeling overwhelmed a cleaning lady can ease some of the stress.

Home Inspection Company: You will need this once you find your new home. Having a home inspection can save you from a few surprises down the road.

You may not need to hire all of these people, but get the help you need. Selling and buying homes can be stressful. If you need help, get it. You may also need the help of a gardener, carpenter, drywall professional, plumber, etc.

I found the right house and bought it.
This is it.
It is a bungalow on a ravine type lot built in 1965.
It was a custom built home at the time and has been well maintained.
We have a late fall 2018 closing.

We just need to sell our present home.

Canada Blooms 2018

The first thing you see when you enter the show is the red carpet where one can stand and have their picture taken.

The next thing you would notice is how dark it is inside the venue.

Each display is lit in some way, so I guess it is necessary to keep everything else dark.

We walked under the arches above and weren't sure if they were made of water or plastic until one of us stuck her finger in it. I won't say who, but one of us got a little wet.

The pictures immediately above and below are a tribute to The Caged Bird.

The Bourne Supremacy

The Princess and the Frog.

Pollinators are also celebrated.

There are entries made by children celebrating pollinators.

There is an installation by the famous Butchart Gardens. Butchart Gardens is near Victoria, British Columbia.

Alice in Wonderland. I like the clock even though they left out the apostrophe.

I would love to have a 'We're All Mad Here Clock'.

Some of the window boxes are beautiful. I have never seen pussy willows like these before.

I think this is my favourite installation. The greenhouse was beautiful inside and out.

I went in and took a picture looking up at the lights and their reflections.

Set the Table - Puddle Ducks

I was cleaning out various areas of the house recently and came across these ceramic ducks.

I had almost forgotten about them. They were given to me many years ago by a favourite sister-in-law.

I was struck by how much they resembled these duck salad plates.

The plates are meant to be used in the fall, I think. I thought they might fly for spring too.

Since it is Spring, the ducks should have nests to sit upon.

Each nest is made from a twig wreath with fern leaves and spring-like picks added.

They remind me of Beatrix Potter Puddle Ducks.

This little duck is tending her nest on top of a wooden pedestal.

Her mate stands by.

I can't decide if they are ducks or geese on the plates. I think they could be either and they look a lot like the ceramic ducks.

The plate stack starts with a twig nest on top of a wood charger.

The nest is topped with a luncheon plate from Cambria in Celedon from Pottery Barn.

The salad plates can be found HERE. They are on clearance now.

Crystal goblets are Waterford and the silver flatware is a vintage Community Plate named Evening Star.

The napkins are by Lenox.

Set the Table - St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is a favourite holiday around here.

Although we are not Irish, we do enjoy celebrating the holiday.

We have managed to collect a few pieces of Belleek china over the years.

Some are ornaments, such as this watering can.

The plate in the foreground of the picture above is not Belleek.

It is by Global Design Connections by Kate Williams.

The white candlesticks are Skye McGhie.

The bell is also a Belleek ornament.

Another favoured piece is this older Belleek jug. It has the gold/yellow glaze on the inside.

Green mercury glass candlesticks are from Ikea a number of years ago.

The tablecloth is a piece of green and grey plaid suiting that has been fringed at the edges.

The plate stack starts with a charger painted to resemble stone.

The bottom plate is Cambria in Celedon from Pottery Barn.

The white dinner plate and bread and butter plate are Richmond from Johnson Brothers.

The green and white plates are Green & White Toile by Maxcera.

The small vase is Belleek.

I love this shamrock cup and saucer by Aynsley.

Green-handled cutlery is from Ikea and the green & white striped napkins have no labels. I have had them for a number of years.

Set the Table - Hearts & Flowers

Valentine's Day can be such a sweet day for some, but for others, it can be a day when you wish it would all just go away.

I remember one Valentine's Day when I was feeling particularly lonely, a thoughtful friend brought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

I'll never forget how it lifted my spirits. I don't think that she knew how much it meant to me.

That was many years ago and we have not been in touch for a long time.

I think it is a good idea to do something for someone who is alone for the first time, especially at this time of year. It could be a bouquet of flowers, a card, or even a phone call.

I made the small lace and wire hearts and the tutorial for them is HERE. These hearts are made the same way as in the tutorial only they are smaller.

We made some extra hearts and left one side of the wire long enough to push into the flower arrangement.

Two of the hearTs were left bare and the third heart was given the lace treatment.

The Plate Stack

The plate stack starts with a gold charger. No linens were used as a base for the table setting.

The next plate in the stack is Antique Scroll HERE.

The next plate is actually a handled cake plate called Old English Garden by Royal Albert.

Next is a square salad plate from Old Britain Castles in pink by Johnson Brothers.

The top plate is by Favolina and made in Poland. They are from the thrift store and I just have these six plates. I was unable to find the pattern at Replacements.

The napkins are pink cotton damask that we have enjoyed using for a few years.

The silverware is vintage Community Plate called Evening Star.

The napkins are a soft pink Damask that we have enjoyed for several years.

The napkin rings I made once upon a time from wire and beads. I don't have a tutorial for them.

Flowers were arranged in the bottom of an ironstone casserole.
