Firewall technology evolution
Fundamental firewall technology has not changed much in recent times. It separates into a few broad categories and most vendors incorporate some or all of them into their toolset.
The most common baseline requirement these days is Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). Vendors also generally incorporate forms of individual packet filtering as well as port filtering. There are two other features now commonly found in most mainstream firewalls these are; that they act as application gateways or proxies, and can also have rule/policy-based access control lists-referencing IP addresses/ranges, network user-IDs etc. Some vendors also enable the administrator of the device to set up advanced rule sets to enforce the enterprise's security policies and framework, be it content filtering, Web access/content control, blacklists/whitelists, or even bandwidth shaping and management.
Virtual firewalls and virtual policies/rule-sets are now making an appearance -- allowing several administrators to have access to their own areas and rules on the one appliance.

Unlike Norton Anti Spam 2005 and Mail Frontier, SpamKiller doesn't fully integrate into popular e-mail clients. Although the software does create a toolbar inside Outlook and Outlook Express, clicking the button to, say, view all your blocked mail takes you to a separate McAfee application where you can view and rescue messages it blocked by mistake. You'll then have to wait until the next time you download your mail to get the previously rescued messages, an extra hoop other programs don't make you jump through.

SpamKiller creates its own accounts for your existing e-mail addresses and clients, meaning that your e-mail is filtered through another system before it reaches your in-box. That's fine, except the setup program found outdated e-mail account information on our test machine, which we then had to correct. To complete installation, you have to open your e-mail software and manually change your POP server settings to check these SpamKiller accounts instead of your original e-mail accounts. Beginners would easily be flummoxed by this process.

Despite McAfee's acquisition of SpamAssassin and other technologies, SpamKiller 6.0 is a muddle of an antispam app.
At one time, McAfee SpamKiller was the most reliable antispam weapon in our arsenal. That time has passed. Poor installation, mediocre performance, and some annoying technical glitches make McAfee SpamKiller 6.0 a poor choice. We recommend MailFrontier Desktop instead.
When you install SpamKiller, you're also installing McAfee's Security Center, a secondary desktop window that provides occasional security alerts but mostly exists to promote other McAfee products. This year, we were unable to remove Security Center without also uninstalling SpamKiller, so if you choose to install this product, you're stuck with the whole thing.

"We don't want there to be any service disruption so in the short-term, we'll keep the Kelkea name. But in the next 30 to 90 days, we'll re-brand all of our service offerings and sell them as Trend Micro," he said.
Over the next three to nine months, however, the supplier also intends to introduce additional Kelkea-based offerings to tackle phishing and pharming.
As to whether Trend Micro will remain on the acquisition trail, Rynne was guarded. "For those following us, this move comes as a big change. We grew organically for 15 years, apart from buying a minor vendor selling firewalls in 2003 that we integrated into our desktop products," he said.
In May, however, the organisation purchased anti-spyware company InterMute, followed by Kelkea a month later, which "comes as a big change".
"Does that mean we're on a buying trail? Only where it makes sense will you probably see Trend Micro acquiring in areas that it's keen to master technology rapidly. We see botnets, phishing and pharming as important areas and unless you can leapfrog those threats, you're always trailing behind," Rynne said.

Graham Titterington, an analyst at Ovum, said: "This is symptomatic of all of the anti-virus vendors, they are trying to branch out and operate a bit more broadly in blocking nasties on the Internet. Trend Micro is trying to maintain itself on a level with what its major rivals such as Symantec are doing, so it makes sense to maintain its competitive position."
Kelkea provides an anti-spam service to a range of US-based ISPs such as AOL by tackling such content before it enters the network. As a result, according to Fernando Rynne, Trend Micro's global product marketing manager for Internet security, the purchase complements Trend Micro's deal with Postini, which handles spam at the gateway. The Kelkea service will be sold as an add-on to Trend Micro's core enterprise and service provider customer base.

Anti-virus vendor Trend Micro is trying to maintain a competitive position by broadening its offerings with the purchase of anti-spam vendor, Kelkea, for an undisclosed sum.
Kelkea, which was a not-for profit organisation until the middle of 2004 when it changed its name from Maps (mail prevention system), generated US$1.6 million in revenues last year.
The organisation has 20 staff, which will remain at its San Jose, California, offices rather than move to Trend Micro's Cupertino headquarters due to space considerations. Its founder, chairman and chief executive Dave Rand will become Trend Micro's chief technologist of Internet security.

The Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's point of call to report about spam, said it had received no complaints of bulk spam from ISPs. A statement from the ICO said, "As you are aware the ICO's role is to enforce the regulations (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003). If it receives complaints regarding spam, the ICO needs to establish the source of the spam to take action. The ICO then contacts the company concerned."

This will cause serious problems for email infrastructures as it is impractical to block domain names from large ISPs. Linford predicts that ISPs will see a growth in the volume of bulk mail they send and receive over the next two months, with spam levels rising from75 percent of all email to around 95 percent within a year.
"The email infrastructure is beginning to fail," Linford warned. "You'll see huge delays in email and servers collapsing. It's the beginning of the email meltdown."
Linford said that ISPs need to act fast to take control of the problem. "They've got to throttle the number of emails coming from ADSL accounts. They are going to have to act quickly to clean incoming viruses. ISPs have so much spam -- they are too understaffed to call people up and tell them they have Trojans on their machines. And no one would know what you're talking about."

Previously, these zombie PCs have been used as mail servers to send spam emails directly to recipients.
"The Trojan is able to order proxies to send spam upstream to the ISP," said Steve Linford, director of SpamHaus.
Linford believes that this Trojan was written by the same people who write spamming software.
Reports suggest that ISPs in the US have already been hit. "We've seen a surge in spam coming from major ISPs. Now all of the ISPs are having large amounts of spam going out from their mail servers," said Linford.

A massive spam spike is predicted, and one expert says that 'it's the beginning of the email meltdown'.
Spam levels are about to skyrocket, according to experts who warned this week that spammers have developed a new way of delivering their wares.
According to SpamHaus, an anti-spam organisation which compiles blacklists blocking eight billion messages a day, a new piece of malware has been created that takes over a PC and then uses it to send spam via the mail server of that PC's Internet service provider. This means the spam appears to come from the ISP, making it very hard for an anti-spam blacklist to block it.

His company, DeerSoft, was acquired by Network Associates (recently renamed McAfee) at the end of 2002. While SpamAssassin was an open-source project, DeerSoft specialised in creating proprietary extensions to the software to make it easier to manage. Network Associates snapped up the company, Mason and his fellow engineers along with it.
He says the vendors are actually coming up with products that are useful, but concedes you can only go so far. "There are limitations as to how accurate you can get," he admits.
Perhaps of most concern is the number messages tagged as spam that are in fact legitimate. The current rates of what is cutely referred to as "collateral damage" or "false positives" are running at around 0.5 percent in the present generation of Network Associates products, Mason claims.
