Good question!

There are many different types of Terriers. Many people have popularized the cute Scottie dog or Scottish Terrier. You'll often see black Scottish Terriers parading across sweaters, mugs and the like. You may even glimpse them in cartoons spouting thrifty proverbs in a Highlands accent.However, it is the Yorkie that has become the second most popular dog breed in the USA.
This post has information about the dog breed differences between Scottish and Yorkshire Terriers.

Comparing Scottish and Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers also known as Yorkies are becoming well known as a great small dog to cross breed with Maltese to create Morkies.
Why?

While Terriers were originally bred to be scrappy rat catchers, the Yorkshire Terriers became treasured for their intelligence and luxurious low shedding long silky coat that is steel-blue and tan in colour.

Yorkshire Terriers are a Toy breed and only grow to be about they will eat about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of food a day and are very long lived many live as long as 16 years. However, as a Toy breed with fine bones, they need to be protected and are quite fragile. They can eve kill themselves jumping from your arms. This is not a dog for rough housing, but they are quite sociable with other pets. Yorkshire Terriers can be quite feisty even with large dogs, much to their detriment.
Yorkshire Terriers have tiny bladders which can make it difficult to house train them. They also do not enjoy wet weather, so if you want to train them to go to the washroom outside, you may need to install a doggy door that accesses a sheltered dog run. Many owners opt instead to Pee Pad train Yorkies and some owners litter train their Yorkies.

Yorkies originated in England, when Scottish workers came to work in factories brought Clydesdale Terrier or Paisley Terriers with them. It is thought that Yorkies developed through cross breeding with Clydesdale Terrier and other breeds such as the English Black, Tan Toy Terrier, and Skye Terrier. Huddersfield Ben, who was born in 1865 was the first modern Yorkie and became a well-known show dog. Yorkshire Terriers were registered in the British Kennel Club stud book in 1877, and the first breed club was formed in England in 1898.

Yorkshire Terriers need lots of attention, and if left alone for long periods of time, may develop separation anxiety. Due to its small size and occasional skittishness, the Yorkie functions better with older children that have learned how to treat animals. Yorkshire Terriers require little exercise and are content apartment dwellers. They do not do well in the cold and are relatively tolerant of heat.

Scottish Terriers

Scottish Terriers have tough wiry coats that come in a variety of colours. They weigh between 18 to 22 pounds and when an adult will eat about 1.5 cups of food a day. Their life span is a bit shorter than other small dogs, but they usually live 11 to 13 years on average.
Scottish Terriers shed a negligible amount, and only require moderate maintenance with occasional Professional grooming.
es. Training Scottish Terriers can be challenging. They are known to be stubborn, and independent, while extremely loyal -especially to the family member who feeds them. Patience and perseverance are required to adequately train Scottish Terriers. Professional obedience schools can also be helpful. It is essential to only use positive training as these are highly sensitive dogs.
Scottish Terriers are known to be moderately protective of their owners and are generally considered to be good guardians. Scottish Terriers will bark and alert their owners when an intruder is present. While this breed is tough in the cold weather it has a hard time handling the heat. Something to consider when thinking about having a Scottish Terrier in your apartment. Another consideration is Scottish Terriers are fairly active They need regular exercise to stay healthy. Do you live near a dog park or can you set up an indoor exercise area? Watch out though, do not leave them unattended outdoors.Scottish Terriers are extremely curious and have a high tendency to wander. They will use their burrowing abilities to get out of enclosures. Scottish Terriers have a strong dislike of vermin bred into them and will chase moles, rats, and snakes, crushing them with their powerful jaws.
The jury is mixed on whether Scottish Terriers are a suitable breed for kids. Some Scottie owners say they are playful, energetic, and affectionate around children ,while others would not trust their dogs around children.All agree Scottish Terriers are best for those who have previous experience with dog ownership.

Alert ! Ontario Abusive Veterinarian Statement Creates Questions About Training !

Ontario Veteranarian Abused Animals - Excuse? Normal Treatment in Homeland!

Kawartha Lakes pet owners will want to verify where their veterinarian trainined, if we are to believe the excuse of an abusive Ontario veteranarian whose treatment of dogs and cats was reported by four former employees.

Mahavir Singh Rekhi, of St. Catharines, Ontario, plead guilty to professional misconduct at the College of Veterinarians of Ontario in July after four former employees filed a complaint about his conduct.
What was his excuse?

The former employees submitted 12 videos to the college as evidence of misconduct which were published this week. The videos showed the veteranarian slamming and choking cats and dogs.
Adamson, lawyer for Rekhi, who attended veterinary school in India, says he came from a jurisdiction where they treated animals "differently," but has now taken responsibility for his actions.
The college has fined Rekhi $10,000 and suspended him for 10 months, which can be reduced to six months if he attends a variety of training programs.
Ontario's animal welfare organization has also launched a criminal investigation into allegations of cruelty against Rekhi in wake of the news reports.

Why do we think Sunny would have loved playing with a Dog Monkey?

Here is a fond memory of Sunny and her toy weasel.

Sunny Loved Playing Weasel

When Sunny came to visit us, she brought items to help her feel at home. One item she brought along was her favourite toy weasel.
Playing with Sunny and her weasel was pure delight. We'd toss it in the air and squeal "Weasel" and Sunny would jump, grab it in mid air, then toss one end towards us and play "Keep Away" for a bit, or let us catch the end and play a gentle "Tug and Shake" game.
Sometimes, Sunny would toss her "Weasel" into the air, then when it landed, stomp enthusiastically on its squeaker with one paw and tug on the opposite end.

Sunny slipped away sometime ago, yet the wonderful memories of playing with her are forever in our hearts.

Caber, a trauma dog, becane the first canine allowed in a British Columbia courtroom last May when he assisted a child sexual assault victim who had to testify at trial.

Sexial assault cases in Canada are notorious for causing victims even further trauma as they recount their assault in order to convict their predator.
So how did Caber get permission to be in court?

Having a trauma dog available to assist vulnerable people in court is a great breakthrough for victims of crime.

How Caber Received Permission to Be in Court

Caber,a seven-year-old Labrador retriever, was permitted in the courtroom due to a successful application by Surrey Crown Counsel Winston Sayson.
In a written statement, Sayson said the decision demonstrates the ability of the criminal justice system to "evolve and be innovating in accommodating children and vulnerable victims." He said the dog was clearly a help to the girl.

The girl, whose name can't be released, was able to cuddle and play with Caber, a trauma dog with the Delta Police Department, during breaks in the trial.
'"While testifying, the child bent down several times to pet Caber, which appeared to refocus and calm her," said the trauma K9's handler, Kim Gramlich.
"At this trial, Caber provided the unique kind of support that helped the child witness give a full and candid account of what happened to her," Sayson said. Caber has been with the Delta Police Department since 2010, working at pre-trial interviews and assisting witnesses while preparing to testify.

Dogs in other Canadian Courtrooms

The first dog allowed in a Canadian courtroom was Hawk, who assisted in a Calgary Alberta court in December 2014. Another K9, Wren, assisted in an Edmonton, Alberta court in March 2015.
With the growing understanding of the importance of trained trauma dogs to help victims, we hope to hear of trauma dogs becoming the norm in more courtrooms in the coming year.

A study by the Virginia Commonwealth University showed that having dogs in a work place could decrease stress for not only dog owners but for co-workers as well.
Lower stress levels can lead to:

Lower levels of burn out.

However, before landing into work with your dog in tow, it's important to prepare your work place as well as your dog.
How?

Take Your Dog to Work Day Preparations

Want to make your dog's office debut more productive?
Karen Pryor Clicker Training shares the following tips from the The American Kennel Club on their blog.

Survey the scene. Before bringing your dog to the office, take a look around and pet-proof your space. Secure all cabinets and trash cans that contain food. Remove anything smaller than a tennis ball or any items within your pet's reach that have sharp edges or could be a choking hazard. Cover any exposed electrical cords or outlets to prevent burns and electrocution from chewing.
Behavior. You should take only well-trained and housebroken dogs to work with you. Make sure your dog is socialized and safe around strangers. If your dog is unnerved by changes in environment or social situations, the attention and strange noises associated with an office could cause your dog undue stress.
Health. You would stay home from work if you were sick and so should your dog. If your pup has a contagious condition, it is best if he stays at home. It is also very important to make sure any pet visitor is up-to-date on all vaccinations.
Hygiene. Just as you care for your own hygiene before heading for work, make sure your dog is clean and well-groomed before you take him to the office. A dirty dog could cause co-workers to complain. Wow! Even after 10 days of brushing Xena, PC Watson got this much fur out of her! That's some thick winter coat a German Shepherd gets!
Bring the necessities. Make sure you bring with you all necessities for your dog, such as bowls, food, quiet chew toys, treats, clean-up bags, and a leash.
Supervise! Keep an eye on your dog at all times. Be mindful of those who might be afraid of your dog and people who are allergic to pets. At Karen Pryor Clicker Training, we find it helpful to have baby gates at the entrances of our office doors to keep dogs safely confined.

We at "RAISE UR PAW" need the voices and paws of the world to be raised to help ban the YULIN DOG MEAT EATING FESTIVAL which is going to occur on June 21, 2015. Countless Canine Lives will be sacrificed in order to fulfill an inhumane tradition that has been permitted to occur for many years - and it is now time this horror is finally put to an end.
This brutal "Festival" involves what some call savouring the "delights" of dog meat hotpot, lynchees, and strong liquor -- which will increase the abduction of strays and pets and also increase the torturous & inhumane prisons of dog meat farms - places where man's best friends are raised for such purposes -- thousands of dogs will suffer, be butchered, beaten to death, skinned alive and eaten.
Time is ticking and the massive killing of dogs will soon take place, we must get our voices united and raised not just to save the lives but save the hope in humanity - to be part of a compassionate world where we all come together to stand up and speak out for all innocent life, not just the life of humanity.
If we turn away and ignore the cries/pleas of these babies, then we truly have turned away from being human"kind".

Therapy Dog Program Boosting Spirits in Canadian Communities for Over 20 Years

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program brings joy and comfort to the sick, lonely and those in need of a friendly visit. The program started in June, 1992 as a pilot program in Peterborough, Ontario. and today nearly 3,000 Therapy Dog teams reach thousands annually.
Program Details Therapy Dog services are provided in a wide range of community settings such as:

Hospitals
Seniors residences and care facilities
Schools, universities and colleges
Community centres and libraries

The Therapy Dog Program provides an opportunity for individuals to:

Talk with the volunteer and the dog
Feel, touch, pet and cuddle the dog
Receive unconditional love from the dog
Carry-out or practice an activity in the presence of the dog - such as the "Read to the Dog" program at Kawartha Lakes Libraries

Where Do Therapy Dogs Work?

Therapy Dogs routinely offer comfort and companionship in senior residences and care facilities. In hospitals, they may be providing relief and distraction for patients awaiting cancer treatments. There are special programs such as “Paws 4 Stories” which help young children learn to read, and in some communities Therapy Dogs work with youth at risk and children with special needs. University campus visits are very popular, helping to relieve stress during exam periods. In special cases, Therapy Dogs can be found working with police and fire departments, social workers and psychologists during times of crisis. First, I'd like to apologize for not writing anything about this sooner. I've found that when I don't know what to say, and I'm flummoxed, I tend to go silent. I'm not sure why that happens, but it's something I'm praying will get sorted out with God's help.

Here are some questions I would be asking if I were one of the contestants in our Fido Casting Call Souvenir Book Competition, and the best honest answers I have.

A. Yes, I would still like to create this to thank all our fabulous fans.

3. When will the Fido Casting Call Competition Book be ready?

A. When the Fido Casting Call Competition was on, I was using a free app called Picnik to create the photos, and had planned on using it to create the book. Google cancelled Picnik, so I have been working on finding another solution. In between then and now, I almost died, but with the Grace of God, I am hoping to have a first very rough draft ready by the end of February.

In October 2014 Kawartha Lakes Police asked our community, to name our police dog. After tallying up all the submitted names, they narrowed the choice down to three submissions. Then with the assistance on an online survey posted on October 24th, the community elected to name our community police dog “Recon,”
Why Recon?
Shirley, pictured below, suggested Kawartha Lakes Police name their newest officer Recon in honour of her nephew, a Canadian Forces Military Police Officer who was killed in Afghanistan.

Police Service Dog Wolfe Gets His Man!

Police Service Dog Wolfe,after less than a month on the road, following graduating from a training program in Niagara Region, played an instrumental role in solving a serious crime in our community. It is a proud moment for our Police Service,and a great time to thank Peterborough Lakefield Police Service Club partner, The Ernest J Wolfe Council of the Knights Of Colombus for their committed sponsorship of Police Service Dog Wolfe.

Peterborough Break and Enter Investigation!

On 20 September 2011, Police investigated a break and enter on Albertus Avenue. A Scenes of Crime Officer attended the scene and was able to lift a fingerprint which a member of Peterborough Lakefield Forensic Identification Unit was able to identify. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the suspect, Jesse McIsaac, 22 years of Peterborough. On 26 January 2012, members of the Criminal Investigations Unit set up surveillance on the residence of the suspect and located him in the area of Parnell Street. The suspect fled on police arrival and the Canine Unit was requested to assist.

Officers Wolfe and Fish Find McIsaac!

A short track by Constable Fish and Police Service Dog Wolfe located the suspect hiding in a snow fort in a rear yard. McIsaac was arrested and has been charged with Break and Enter, Obstructing a Police Officer and two counts of Breach of Probation. McIsaac was held in custody.

Daisy Seeks Forever Home!

Loyal Rescue, is new to me. The following ad appeared in our local Kijiji. According to their site,Loyal Rescue offers pets for adoption throughout the province and in many states. Pets are kept in foster homes, rather than a central facility. This can be a wonderful way for pets to live, in a loving home while waiting for adoption.
Daisy, a Shih Tzu Poodle was rescued from an Ontario Puppy Mill, and has this to say:

Daisy's Story

Until a few weeks ago I didn't have a name nor an identity so I thought that I wasn't very important and now here I am ready to give a speech! Can you believe it? I'm so excited that I don't know where to start but I'll give it a try. I have lived all my life producing one litter of pups after another in a puppy-mill. A few weeks ago, I overheard my owner saying that my life was coming to an end unless I was 'rescued' and I wondered what that meant. I now know that 'rescued' is a great word because it means freedom and love and the ability to run on nice green grass with my friends. I feel so good that I'm giddy with happiness! I have two wonderful foster parents, friends to play with (heck, there is even a cat here) but I do love to chase him, a warm cozy bed, lots of food and water, and lovely soft grass. What more could a dog want except just one more thing: a forever home. By any chance, do you have a nice cozy home and lots of love to share with a quiet lady like me in return for my dedication, love and affection? If so get your application in to LOYAL Rescue as soon as possible and in the meantime, I will get busy packing my bags. See you soon. Love, Daisy

Foster Home Notes

Daisy is a loving little dog, once she trusts you. She has spent her little life in a puppy mill where nobody gave her any love, so touching and loving is brand new for Daisy. However she is learning fast and loving it. She deserves a wonderful home that she can call her own. I have had her for only a few weeks and yet it seems as if she has been with me forever. As a mill girl she must have a fenced in back yard or she will run if given the chance. I believe that once Daisy is comfortable with her new home and family she will get over this running away very quickly. She loves to play with toys and play tug-a war with my dog. She would do well in a home with another dog her size, and energy level, or a bigger dog. Daisy will try and boss a smaller more timid dog if she can.
Daisy is almost housetrained, but will not ask to go out yet, so keeping her in a routine is important.. All her vetting, including dental, has been done and, with good nutritfood, she is beginning to blossom, now that she has gained her freedom. It is such a shame that a healthy dog like Daisy was so dispensable but she was, indeed, very fortunate to have been rescued by LOYAL. If Daisy has touched your heart and you feel that your home would ideal for her, why not put in an application?

Great Dane’s Actions Save Woman!

A battered women’s shelter in Missouri changed its policy, because of a dog hero. Last year, a heroic Great Dane used his body as a shield to save his beloved owner. Her domestic partner was attacking her with a hammer and her dog lay on top of her taking the blows for her. The dog suffered several broken ribs, and a broken hip according to the New York Daily Times. He and the woman were then thrown out of a second story window.
The shelter agreed to take in the woman, but they had a strict no pet policy. The woman chose not to abandon 'her angel' and refused help unless her dog was also included. She did not want to leave her beloved dog in the hands of her abuser. Sadly, this is a common story. Up to 40 percent of women,choose to keep their dogs with them, perhaps to the detriment of themselves and their children. Some decide to live in their cars, or make alternate arrangements because most shelters do not have the space or facilities for dogs.
The Missouri shelter decided to change its policy, however. They put in 7 kennels for future pets, and are expanding their program to allow pets. They have realized that pets make a big difference in the lives of these people. The CEO of the shelter, Susan Miller said:

'They (pets) provide so much comfort, and to have to leave that pet behind is so heartbreaking,' Miller said. 'It has become abundantly clear that the incredible therapeutic benefits that pets can have on a family greatly outweigh the cost and inconvenience of housing them.'

Baba the Basenji :Kawartha Dog Friends

Basenji:Barkless Dog

We recently visited Mary, who has a Basenji (bah-SEN-gee) named Baba. Mary fell in love with Basenjis while babysitting a friend’s Basenji several years ago,and has had Basenjis as pets ever since. Baba,her current Basenji is entranced by people's hair! When you sit down he will creep up behind you,sniff your hair all over,and if it is especially pleasing to him ecstatically rub his face all over the top of your head!
Baba is quite the jumper,like most of his breed, which is surprising for their small size - most Basenjis weigh between 22 to 25 pounds and are about 15" to 17"tall. Known as the barkless dog, Baba makes a low howl/moaning/yodeling sound instead of barking,and wears a traditional Basenji bell. Since Basenjis are barkless,when they are used as hunting dogs,in Africa,they wear a bell to help flush game out of the dense underbrush.
Baba has a smooth, shiny, short dense coat which lies flat against his body,and he keeps it soft licking and grooming his hair much like a cat does. Baba's colouring is similar to a deer and he has white speckled markings,much like that of a fawn around his neck in a collar pattern,and on his feet like boots. AKC acceptable colors for Basenjis are black, chestnut red, tricolor or brindle all with white on chest, feet and tip of tail in any color including pinto, white or brindle.

Baba is a high energy dog,and he loves jumping from footstool to footstool around the living room,when not making short work of his tug-of-war toys,or his many chew toys,and rawhide bones.

While Basenjis usually do well with non-canine pets,Baba prefers to be the sole pet in Mary's home.Baba's Basenji watch-dog traits were in evidence as he tried to keep a watchful eye on all the New Year's visitors to Mary's home -trailing them to the kitchen and back,making sure his 'Mum' was well protected.

Basenjis originated in Africa, and date back to ancient times in Egypt. This is why Basenjis are also known as Congo Dogs.Pictures of Basenjis adorn the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs. In Africa, Basenjis are prized for their hunting abilities,alerting owners of the presence of wild game and they often hunt wild game as pack dogs. Mary explained that hunters will carry the small dogs around their neck like a scarf,and Basenjis are so highly prized,that the hunters will sleep outside giving the Basenjis their shelter to sleep in in bad weather.

Mary's large fenced wooded yard is ideal for a Basenji, as they are very energetic, and need plenty of play and exercise.Baba loves to run around,explore and protect his home in the Kawarthas.

Helping Animals Across the Rainbow Bridge

Unlike most days at the Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.

It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.

He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over the Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned back towards the fields in front of The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.

One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals which had been there for a while to explain it to him.

"You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge."

The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person wending his way along the path among these older animals.

"Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. This whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.

"What happened?"

"That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge."

"I think I like rescuers", said the first animal.

"So does GOD", was the reply.

Easy Dog Bone Wreath!

Make a Dog Bone Wreath for A Friend!

Dog bone treats make a fun and festive gift or craft project for the dog lovers in your life when tied to a wreath. Dog wreaths are also welcome as gifts for pets holidays such as Christmas, Easter or birthday celebrations. The wreath can be hung.and the bones removed one by one to give to the pup.

This is a fairly easy craft project and can be a fun project for children and young adults too. I picked up a cute version of this at a craft show a few years ago that was made using a paper plate and small dog treats. This version uses a Styrofoam wreath. If I find the paper plate version, I'll post it as well. Here;s what you need for the dog bone wreath using a Styrofoam wreath:

Items Needed

12 inch foam wreath
Scissors
5 yards ribbon
Large bow
large dog bones
Dog toys (optional)
Tape
Evergreens (optional)
