earth's magnetic field and pole reversal. the science, not the hype

the earth's magnetic field has reversed many times in the past and will reverse again in the future. but the reversal will not happen on a specific date and will not happen within our lifetimes. evidence from many different areas, including clay pots throughout history, computer models from super computers, pre-historic volcanic lava floes, nautical navigation records and more, has shown we are entering the beginning phase of a pole reversal.

the earth's magnetic field can be measured in clay pots. small amounts of magnetite within clay heat up in the kiln and reform according to the earth's magnetic field. so a record of the magnetic field can be measured and recorded from ancient clay pots. the trend observed, over the last 11,000 years indicates it has weakened in the last 2000 years, and especially within the last 300 years, signaling the beginning of a pole reversal. measured analysis of the current field has shown a weakening of the field in the south atlantic, confirming these results.

geophysicists, astrophysicists and geologists all agree that poles will reverse again and will reverse soon. but "soon" to these branches of science is roughly 3000 or more years from now. and the shift will not happen over night, but take several thousand years to complete the reversal. during this weakening of the field, the earth's protective layer, will let in more cosmic radiation, which could increase the amount of cancer and cause other variant results to life on earth. it is interesting that when this shift begins to happen, there will be 3 or 4 magnetic poles and the northern lights, auroras, will be visible from just about everywhere on earth.

according to results measured from lava flow samples, the poles reverse, on average, every 200,000 years.

the last time the earth's magnetic poles reversed was 780,000 years ago.

This one is a pretty safe bet too. The switch from fossil fuel powered vehicles is already underway and, although there are a few potential energy sources including hydrogen and various biofuels vying for consideration, IBM predicts that improved battery technology will be the technology to power the next generation of eco-friendly vehicles. It says the new batteries won’t need to be recharged for days or months at a time, depending on how often the vehicles are driven, and will allow trips of 300 to 500 miles (480 – 800km) on a single charge. Also smart grids in cities will allow vehicles to be charged in public places using renewable energy, such as wind power, for charging so they no longer rely on coal-powered plants.

taco bell has made similar predictions. they are developing a car that runs off methane, with fuel ports located in each seat. they're gambling on customers eating more of their product to power their vehicles.

we've never had a tornado here before. i just so happened to be driving, when i saw this. i wasn't sure what it was at first, as "tornado" was furthest from it. i got out my camera at the red light and the guy in an air conditioning repair service van, one lane over, asked me if that was a tornado. i told him it looked like one to me. the first photo is thru my windshield. the second is 10 minutes later from the second level of a parking garage. i like how the funnel is inverted. i believe that is a rare occurrence. before it dissipated, it turned into two funnels, and then fanned out into just wind. it was a very cool experience to witness.

yep, today's the day.
the 400th episode of the simpsons. yes i said 400 th. everyone has been saying for years that the simpsons is the longest running tv series ever. but that isn't exactly true. "gunsmoke" from the '50's and '60's ran 18 years, longer than the 17-year simpson run. and "meet the press" has been running almost as long as there were televisions, since 1948 or so. you could say that the simpsons is the longest running sit com or animated series.

i haven't watched tv or radio in a few months because of school, so i'm not sure if anyone covered this, but here it is anyway:
the simpsons first appeared on the "tracy ulman show" in the late '80's. they were 10-20 second shorts, originally drawn solely by tracey, but later she had help and she did all the voices herself. it was the funniest animation anyone had ever seen. soon afterwards tinytoons came out, which was also quite funny. matt groening, one of the animators, stole the idea, concept, characters, etc and went to tracey's boss', the fox executives and sold them on making longer shorts in front of movies and a pilot series. one of the 2 movies was "war of the roses." the series started in january of 1990. i was in college at the time and we all wanted everything to do with the simpsons. it was simpson's night at my apartment, every sunday, with beer of course. after a few weeks, i was walking with a friend to class, and he dropped one of his books and said "d'oh!" from that point on we would always quote the simpsons on compass and beyond. the phenomenon had started, and not just on my campus, but everywhere.
we all watched religiously for years, until the dark ages came to the simpsons. i'm referring to the middle period, where there were less jokes, sometimes only 2-3 per episode and strong family value themes. i'm glad they weren't cancelled during this period. i know they got many angry letters though. slowly, the feedback got back to the creators and they retro'd the series back to the early years, in theme and humor, not in animation thankfully. the early animation stuff was so crude, more akin to how it was on the "tracey ulman show." she did eventually sue, but matt and others had cleverly changed everything enough to make it legally ok, and she lost the case. the recent years of the simpsons have been an age of enlightenment for comedy. sure they copy off of "south park" once in a while and "the family guy" copies off of the simpsons, but each instance is still hilarious. i'm always amazed that they keep coming up with new themes and ideas for the same characters. one of the most shocking episodes was when flanders' wife died, or was killed by a nascar t-shirt canon. every one i talk to has there favorite episode or part of an episode that they love the most. the simpsons are also timeless. the college kids today watch the new and old episodes and get all the jokes. they're on every day, several times a day and probably will be for decades or for forever. can't wait for the movie to come out this year.

i saw someone outside starbucks today. he was outside drinking a latte and playing a video game on a portable device, while listening to his radio. i looked closer and saw a dog that hadn't been washed for months and a cardboard sign. the sign said the typical thing, of needing food, etc. he wasn't begging because he was in need, just to pay for his coffee and cigarettes. laziness is not an excuse to ask for money. pretty soon begging will be a major at the local community college. when he filed his taxes, did he put "begging technician" or "street corner monetary acquisition engineer" in the occupation field? i have no problem giving to those in need, but not to someone like this.
