Story: Four petty rural gangsters, Rajbir (Parvin Dabas), Ambani, Sexy and Doctor, get the chance of a lifetime when their boss, Fauji (Sharat Saxena) gives them a new mission. The foursome must scuttle the brewing farmer's protest movement against the government's land acquisition schemes and ensure that the farm lands are sold off, at nominal rates, to industrialist, Anupam Kher. But before they settle for the big moolah, they must contend with conscience call. Can they go against the interest of the farmers and the village where they have grown up?

Movie Review: Another topical film, this one's an interesting directorial debut by actor Parvin Dabas who captures on screen the recent farmer's agitation in places like Nandigram, Singur, Bhatta Parsaul and several other rural belts which are being grabbed by industrialists and commercial land developers. The setting is completely authentic with the drama unfolding in a village that skirts the Capital. Naturally then, it draws the attention of sundry politicians, industrialists and land sharks who see a potential gold mine in it, the local farmers be damned.

Of course, the film does have some rough edges and tends to meander a bit. Too many fringe characters and sub-plots tend to divert attention from the main issue. Nevertheless, there is an earnestness of intent and loads of meaningful content which makes for interesting viewing. The high point of the film are its performances, where all the actors are in sync with their characters and bring an element of freshness on a screen which is mostly dominated by plastic acts.

A serious and sensible debut film by director Parvin Dabas, Sahi Dhande Galat Bande is offbeat and fresh

The duo then dispose the body and try to pick up the strings of life -- and their relationship -- again. But the law catches up soon...

Based on the headline-grabbing case of Kannada actor Maria Susairaj, her boyfriend Jerome Matthew and the murdered television executive Neeraj Grover, Not A Love Story is a startling film. Startling, because it captures the nasty, brutal side of seemingly normal and nice people who sometimes, see nothing amiss in the most heinous of crimes. The casualness with which Anusha and Robin try to cover the tracks of their crime, dispose off the body of the victim, make love even while he lies dead and bloodied in the next room fills you with chill and dread.

And that's where Ram Gopal Varma manages to score a point. Artistically, this may not be his best film. But in terms of capturing the dark recesses of the human psyche, Varma scripts a chilling experience. Not once are the perpetrators engulfed with a sense of guilt or remorse, nor do they even remotely fear retribution. All they want to do is carry on with the business of life as if nothing has happened.
Of course, the film ends abruptly and leaves you with a sense of incompleteness, but while it lasts, it holds your interest. Both Mahie Gill and Deepak Dobriyal imbue their roles with a touch of realism and remain recognisable, ordinary small towners. Varma's camera angles are zany like always and his background music creates a language of its own.

Gory, yes but Not A Love Story is an interesting study of the darker and more devious spots of friendly neighbourhood types.

Story: Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak), the nerd of Bheja Fry 1 returns with all his irritating quirks. This time, he has won himself a free trip on a luxury cruise and is determined to rock the boat for most of the revelers, specially the tax evader, tycoon Kay Kay Menon. In between, he manages to find a potential love interest in Minisha Lamba... at least that's what he thinks.

Movie Review: First things first: you do end up a few shades disappointed with the sequel, specially since the first part was such a scintillating act. The humour is laid back, the laughs are too few and far between and the tango between Vinay Pathak and Kay Kay Menon lacks the chemistry that crackled between Pathak and Rajat Kapoor in part one.

But give yourself a little time and let the characters take shape. It won't be long before you realize that Bharat Bhushan is still the nicest fool in the world. His stupidity still has an endearing quality to it as he tries his best to make the world a better place for everybody, unmindful of the barbs and the ridicule that comes his way. His antics, both on the ship and off it do induce a chuckle and a smile as the world writes him off as the proverbial loser. But zeroes, in Bollywood parlance often end up as heroes, specially if they stand up for the right.

Bheja Fry 2 also has an additional factor to add to the mayhem: Amole Gupte as the mad RD Burman fan, who prefers to lead a savage existence with his antiquated radio and his RD golden oldies. Watch out for an interesting cameo by Gupte who is creating a niche for himself as an actor of import.

Story: Three young professionals who happen to be roommates -- Tashi (Imraan Khan), Nitin (Kunaal Roy Kapur), Arup (Vir Das) -- inadvertently become couriers for a cache of diamonds, smuggled in by a Russian gangster. The diamonds have to be delivered to a local gangster, Vijay Raaz. Unfortunately, a strange mix-up causes a weird package to be delivered to him instead. This is the beginning of the troubles of the happy-go-lucky threesome which obviously has no experience in tackling Delhi's crazy underworld.

Movie Review: So who's the real hero of the film? Is it writer Akshat Verma who has given Bollywood one of its smartest scripts to hit the horizon since a long long time? As a comedy, Delhi Belly is such a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill Hindi film laugh riot which almost always borders on the juvenile. The humour is all situational, beautifully woven in the script and never having to depend on a banana peel skid. Grow up all you comedy filmmakers who insist on treating your audience as retards!

Is it director Abhinay Deo who tells a story peppered with the most unusual incidents in a down-to-earth, matter-of fact way which works wonders for the film? Mercifully, there is no desire on his part to shock and awe you or send you into hysterical bouts of laughter, simply because the events are so bizarre, they shock and awe you by their very nature and keep the laughs coming relentlessly. Certain sequences almost bring the house down: Vir Das and his exploits with the burqa, Kunaal Roy Kapur and his exploits with orange juice, Vijay Raaz and his encounter with the contraband packet.... Too many to enlist!

Is it the performances: all set pieces and fine examples of how to underplay and over-impress? If Imran Khan pitches in his best act till date as the journalist trapped between fleeing from death and floundering in love's dilemma, then newcomer Kunaal Roy Kapur is the funkiest victim of the accursed Delhi belly. His gripes, groans and loo exploits are the stuff classic comedy is made of. Vir Das delivers his usual competent clown act without trying too hard: quite a scene-stealer. Vijay Raaz as the gangster is a scream while the girls blend in with ease.

And finally, is it the Censor Board which displays such maturity in passing the film with no cuts? For the first time, we get a film where characters actually speak the language real young people speak. And no, nobody's morals get corrupted. One of the highlights of the film is its screenplay, brimming over with cuss and swear words, which themselves add to the fun factor of the film. Ram Sampath's audio score with quirky lyrics like Switty, DK Bose and Chudail are an added bonus.

All in all, Delhi Belly is a fine example of how the brightest and the boldest, when they pool in their talent, can create a film that is guaranteed to give you your money's worth, even as it re-writes all the moth-balled rules of an ageing industry.

Story: Three chronic bachelors see their life go into a tizzy when they fall in love. It doesn't take long before they begin to miss the guy bonding and realise that girls are truly from Venus, which for them must be the most unfriendly, irrational planet in the solar system.

Movie Review: The film has an interesting premise. It tries to investigate the basic incompatibility of the yin and the yang through a set of urban yuppies who try to build and unbuild relationships in the harsh metropolis. The gender bias and miscomprehensions have an interesting twist as the three young bachelors give up their carefree camaraderie to cope with the unending demands of their girlfriends.

But so far, so good. The film has two major problems which make it somewhat tedious viewing. First, it stretches a paper-thin story to inordinate lengths and becomes a real test of patience. The plot doesn't seem to move ahead from the fight-and-make-up sequences between the three ill-matched couples. The fights become repetitive and you end up wishing they just give each other a break.... And you, a break too.

Secondly is the appalling gender skew. Okay, relationships go wrong, but is it right to blame all the misdeeds on the foul female species. Doesn't seem fair, really.

The film had promise and does have a few funny sequences. But by and large, it's a case of promises unfulfilled.

Madhu (Shefaali Shah), a much-married and terribly antsy housewife chooses to go get a life when her workaholic husband forgets her birthday. She buys herself a car and joins hands with a private detective (Rahul Bose) to help him solve his case. The adventure gets dangerous when she discovers the detective is actually a gangster on the run. Can the wife and mother return unscathed to sweet domesticity or is her life going to change forever?

The film has an interesting premise: rich, bored housewife gets attracted to lowbrow goon and is willing to go on a wild goose chase with him. Reason? She wants to bring alive all her wildest fantasies before it's too late to put her ordered, insipid life at stake and take risks....

The film also has an interesting cast with Shefaali Shah and Rahul Bose forming an unusual couple on screen. But sadly, they fail to let the sparks fly and get the chemistry crackling. All along, the attraction between them seems fake as they spend long, leisurely hours in a distant resort, eating mutton biryani and carrot juice. Does it really take a loud burp and some rustic table manners on the part of the tapori gangster to break the ice and have the Pali Hill lady humming romantic numbers?

Also, the lady seems to be so gullible and so easy to fool, it does seem unreal. It takes her eternity to realize her companion's true identity, even though the television keeps blaring out the truth. The duo try hard, but the romance never does light up the screen. Nor do the private lives of the mismatched couple throw up enticing moments that could hold the script together.

Kucch Luv Jaisaa is largely a case of promises unfulfilled.

Movie Review: It's hard to understand why Anees Bazmee makes films. There generally is no logic to it... Thank You, No Problem... But then again, it's easy to understand why Anees Bazmee makes films: to celebrate the illogical and the non-sensical which could be therapeutic for a high-stress audience. Ready, mercifully, has another reason too: Salman Khan. The film is an unabashed ode to Salman Khan, the entertainer rather than the actor. And yes, it works at that level. Sit back for a one-man show by an actor who is becoming increasingly unapologetic about his larger-than-life image on screen and you'll get all the bang for your buck you desire.

So you have Salman doing everything he loves to do -- and you love to see. He talks in cheesy dialogues, breaks into rumbustious, and extremely well choreographed songs and dances, romances the girl in brazen fashion, becomes the invincible hit machine whenever desired, never let's go of his popular family boy avatar (remember the original Prem of Maine Pyaar Kiya) and tries to make you laugh by consistently playing it over the top. And yes, he does do what he's supposed to do: removes his shirt, bares his perfectly sculpted body and vainly asks `mazaa aaya kya?'

Yup, bahut mazaa aaya. But only if you set aside all pretensions of going for a regular, mind-teaser movie. The rest of the characters too are all a crazy bunch. The umpteen men, women and boys -- you lose count of them -- speak silly, speak shrieky. The music (Pritam) plays at deafening decibel levels. The canvas and the colours of the film are garish and loud. And there isn't a moment of repose to allow you to think....

Go celebrate the cornball comic display by Salman Khan. You won't get bored.

To make matters worse, Jai gets a job in the U.S. in a vehicle junkyard, much to the horror of his wife and his family. Jai must use this junkyard so that he can make the fastest car in the world. Jagdish is the spoiled brat of the family. He gets into trouble with the law, when he starts hacking computer data. This brings shame on the entire family, and causes a loss of goodwill and profits, and results in the takeover of the estate by Shekhar Malhota, a close friend of the family. Now all the three brothers, their respective wives, and Mrs. Batra herself will have to come together to try and salvage what they can of their family business and estate. That is if they find time to do so from their very own personal problems and commitments.

Salman is accompanied by a huge and happening supporting cast comprising of Sushmita Sen, Arshad Warsi, Katrina Kaif, Beena Kak, Rajpal Yadav and Sohail himself. Though released amidst tremendous speculation, and surrounded by controversy thanks to the recently released Salman-Aishwarya tape, MPKK still comes out as the single hottest release this summer. So, does it have the same magic as last year’s David-Salman smash hit Mujhse Shaadi Karogi? Does it have enough laughs to tickle your funny bone for its 2 and half hour duration?

The film has obviously been inspired by Paranormal Activity, the cult horror film that created waves with its grainy hand-held video footage. But rest assured, there is such a strong desi flavour to the film, you rarely end up thinking of the Hollywood indie film.

Ragini and Uday make an interesting couple. She's the fragile uptown girl, unabashed about expressing her sexual demands. While he's the desi boy who sprinkles his conversation with gaalis and cuss words and is no-nakhra about his hormonal rage. Also, he has no qualms about exploiting the pretty young thing who trusts him completely. Why should he? He's been promised a film career if he delivers: dream fulfilled for wannabe stars....

Most of the action transpires within the closed doors of the spooky house, where the lights come and go, the stairs unnecessarily creep and shadows flit across, when no one's looking. The chills factory gets in overdrive when the ghost decides to make her presence felt and begins to yank hair, fling bodies, and wound flesh in the middle of the foreplay.

The horror does work in places, although the persistent dim light and the grainy video effect tend to get a bit irksome. But the realistic performances by the lead pair more than make up for the lapses.

Watch it for its novelty and for the fact that Ragini MMS makes a heady cocktail of sex and horror that's so very different from run-of-the-mill Bollywood.
