This "Living Document" serves as a unified roadmap to bridge the gap between primary school and high-tech career pathways, focusing on the philosophy of Karamah Insaniah (Human Dignity).

1. Year 1 Entrance: Aligned to Age 6 (Starting 2027)

The starting age for formal education is shifting to ensure a stronger foundational start for all children.

Alignment to Age 5+: Starting in 2027, the entry age for Year 1 will be aligned to 6 years old (5+).
Parental Choice for 2027: While the policy officially shifts in 2027, the rollout is subject to national readiness. For the 2027 academic year only, enrollment at age 6 is not yet compulsory; parents retain the choice to enroll their child at age 6 or age 7 based on their child's developmental readiness.

2. The "Matriks Pembelajaran Berpusat" (Centralized Learning Matrix)

KPM is introducing Standardized Checkpoints administered centrally by the Examinations Board (Lembaga Peperiksaan) to ensure national academic quality.

Standard 4: The Early Intervention Matrix (Starts 2026)

Standard 4 is now the "Threshold Year" to catch learning gaps early.

Core Subjects: Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, and Science.
The Goal: A national benchmark of a minimum Grade C. Students scoring below this will receive mandatory intervention support to bridge gaps during Standard 5 and 6.

Form 3: The Career Compass Matrix (Starts 2027)

Primary School (Year 1 to Year 6): TVET education officially begins from Year 1. Students engage in "Discovery Learning" to build technical literacy through hands-on modules like robotics, basic coding, and sustainable technology.
Secondary School: Skills are expanded in Forms 1, 2, and 3, with a heavy focus on digital competency.

4. Mandatory Subjects and National Identity

To foster a unified national identity, all Malaysian citizens—regardless of school type—must take Bahasa Melayu and History following the national curriculum. This strictly applies to students in International Schools, Private Schools, and the UEC stream for their SPM examinations.

5. Digital Portfolios & Teacher Wellbeing

AI-driven Digital Portfolios will replace paper report cards, tracking a student's journey from Year 1 to University. This system tracks academic progress, character (Adab), and physical health, while automating administrative tasks for teachers.

The exterior itself is a vibrant canvas, and inside, the hallways are a "Gallery Walk" of creativity and encouragement. Murals with messages like "Connect As One," "Play, Learn & Grow Together," and "Kids with Disabilities Are Just Kids" create a truly inclusive and uplifting environment. Every sign, from the "Welcome" banner with its playful dolphins to the call for "Volunteer" work, reinforces their powerful motto: "Your Contribution = Their Hope."

During my tour, I was particularly moved by the vocational training programs. It was a privilege to witness parents and volunteers diligently working at their sewing machines, learning to create beautiful textile products. Their dedication and focus were truly impressive. The fruits of their labor were proudly displayed in a showcase of exquisite handmade bags.

Some children are excited to go to school, experience a new environment, and meet new friends. However, many seem stressed, demotivated, or even afraid to go to school. This problem is apparent, especially in children who have just started formal schooling, such as in kindergarten or primary school. Some have gone through their respective school sessions but dislike them slowly. This phenomenon is called ‘school refusal’.

What exactly is school refusal?

It occurs when a child becomes unruly and upset at the idea of going to school. This reaction is normal; attending school is a transition in that child’s life, and some may struggle.

How do you know if your child has school refusal?

There are a couple of signs parents could identify. The most common is when a child launches a tantrum or cries/yells. Another common sign is that the child seems to be suddenly disengaged/disinterested. Thirdly, your child may experience unexplainable anxiety when the school day approaches.

What are the causes of school refusal?

It could be due to several reasons. Were there problems at school or home? They could be experiencing conflicts, bullying, and teasing. SPM 2024 Timetable

When is SPM 2024?

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 examinations are set to commence on December 2, 2024, and conclude on February 6, 2025.

The schedule includes

the Malay Oral Test from December 2 to 5
the Science Practical Test from December 9 to 12
the English Oral Test from December 16 to 19
the Malay and English Listening Tests on December 31
the SPM 2024 written examinations from 2 January 2025 to 6 February 2025

A total of 402,956 students across the country will take the exams at 3,337 designated centres. The Education Ministry has enlisted 126,636 invigilators to oversee the process and ensure smooth execution.

The official timetable detailing the exam dates, times, paper codes, and instructions is available for download and printout on the Examinations Syndicate's website at lp.moe.gov.my. Students are urged to review the timetable carefully.

Candidates must bring their identification documents and Examination Registration Statements to the exam centres and follow all prescribed rules and procedures.

Malaysia School Academic Calendar 2025/2026: Key Dates and Holidays

The 2025/2026 Academic Calendar which lists down school days and school holidays for students in Malaysia is out.

You can view the calendar below. If you wish to download a copy, the pdf of the calendar can be downloaded from the Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia website: Kalendar Akademik Sesi 2025/2026.

Some notable dates or things to note:

On which day will school start in 2025?

The school year will start in February 2025 as Malaysia prepares to shift its academic year over time to start in January as it used to be previously. 16th of February for Group A schools and 17th February for Group B schools.

Johor reverts to Saturday and Sunday weekends from 1st January 2025

There are usually two calendars. One for schools in states which observe Saturday and Sunday as weekend ie Group B schools and another for schools in states which observe Friday and Saturday as weekend ie Group A schools. Since Johor will revert to Saturday and Sunday as weekend with effect from 1st January 2025, it will then follow the academic calendar for Group B.

Year end holidays and start of school in 2026

Year end holidays is from 19th or 20th December 2025 till 10th or 11th of January 2026, suggesting that school will start on 11th or 12th of January in 2026.

Festive Holidays

Chinese New Year holidays

As usual, the academic calendar has a separate section for festive holidays. The first festive holidays in 2025 is Chinese New Year. If you notice that it is missing in the festive holidays page, that is because Chinese New Year 2025 falls during the end of academic year 2024/2025 holidays.

The first two days of Chinese New Year in 2025 which is usually a public holiday falls on 29th and 30th of January 2025. The end of academic year 2024/2025 holidays is from 17th or 18th January 2025 until 15th or 16th February 2025. You can check the dates here in the academic calendar for 2024/2025.

Hari Raya holidays

Hari Raya is a little earlier in 2025 with school holidays at the end of March and early April 2025.

With the holidays out, you can now start planning your travel schedule and leave application to spend time with the children during their school holidays as well as have a better idea of the dates involved when you start to plan for transport, activities, tuition and exams.

When is Deepavali 2024 school holidays?

When is Deepavali in 2024?

Deepavali 2024 will be on 31st October 2024 which is a Thursday.

Parents in our Facebook group, The Malaysia Primary School Parents Group on Facebook have been asking "When is Deepavali 2024 school holidays?" Some parents saw notices from some schools on the holidays and wanted to know if their child's school will also be having the holidays as stated in the notices.

Well, it's always good to know ahead so we can plan ahead. Plan when to apply for leave and whether to balik kampung or go on a mini vacation.

Let's revisit the notice from the Ministry of Education on the academic calendar for 2024/2025. There is a Lampiran C which specifically states the festive holidays or cuti Perayaan as shown below.

The National public holiday for Deepavali falls on Deepavali day which is Thursday, 31st October, 2024.

For schools in Kumpulan A which observe Friday and Saturday as weekend, an extra school holiday has been allocated on Wednesday 30th October. Since Friday and Saturday is a weekend for schools in Kumpulan A, this means that the total days off for Deepavali will be from Wednesday, 30th October 2024 to Saturday, 2nd November 2024.

For Schools in Kumpulan B which observe Saturday and Sunday as weekend, two extra days of school holidays have been allocated on Wednesday, 30th October and Friday, 1st November 2024. Together with the Deepavali public holiday and weekends, this will mean that the overall Deepavali holiday will be from Wednesday, 30th October 2024 to Sunday, 3rd November 2024.

The National public holiday for Deepavali on 31st October, 2024 excludes Sarawak. However schools in Sarawak will have the day off on Thursday, 31st October 2024 followed by a day of school before the weekend on Saturday, 2nd November and Sunday, 3rd November 2024.

Hope this makes it clearer for parents to plan their schedule.

Many children face difficulties in these areas, even if they excel in other subjects. Research shows that excessive use of electronic screens can hinder children's language development, particularly in reading and writing.

The foundation of learning English or any other language is literacy. Being part of your child's literacy journey involves more than buying them books and watching them read. It's about helping them understand what they read and encouraging discussions about the content, both verbally and in writing. To support your child's success in their English learning journey, we've compiled strategies to help them master reading and writing skills.

Actively Read out the Words

For children in the early reading stage, read alongside them loudly. Literacy will take shape once they are used to seeing and hearing the words. This is the basis of learning phonics and engraving phonemic awareness.

Always encourage your child to pronounce the words. Use pictures or real-life objects that relate to the words they are trying to pronounce. If there are any words that they are struggling with, let them write those words. This would stimulate their motor skills and establish their writing technique. From there they will develop a connection to the language and use that to describe the world around them. Based on the reading material, ask questions that enable them to recall what they have just read. This would help them start conversations naturally.

Confidence in Writing is by Practicing

Practicing writing here does not simply refer to them doing writing exercises in a book. It is to let them experience and practice writing freely. Journaling is a common concept as it encourages children to compartmentalize their emotions and thoughts onto a piece of paper. There are also card-writing and letter-writing that help them write to a person.

The aim of having them practice is for them to grow more confident in their writing technique and writing out their voice. Read with them what they write and ask them to try again if some words remain unclear.

Comprehensive Learning Program

A more effective method than participating in various activities is structured learning through a program that systematically teaches reading and writing to children. It would be particularly beneficial if this program offered an integrated approach to teaching the English language. How to Register?

Here's a breakdown of the registration process:

Step 1: Create a Profile on idme.moe.gov.my:

New users need to register on the website. Before you start, read the User Manual and follow the step-by-step instructions with pictures provided.

Step 2: Register your Child: After creating your profile, proceed to register your child for the 2025/2026 intake. Follow the instructions provided by the system. Here is a good reference guide as well.

Step 3: Print and Submit Application Form: Upon online registration completion, print the application form. Visit the school and submit the form along with the required documents (see below).

Please confirm with the school. Submission dates will start on 2/5/2024 to 30/6/2024 excluding weekends and public holidays, during office hours with breaks for lunch. Please check with the school for their office hours for submission.

Birth Certificate and MyKid Card
Utility bills (e.g., TNB, Water, or Electricity)
Parent/Guardian's MyKad
Parent/Guardian's Pay Slip
Marriage Certificate or Divorce/Annulment Certificate (whichever applies)
Vaccination record
OKU card (if applicable)
Stamped envelope (if requested by the school for sending hardcopy results)

Fostering Critical Thinking in Our Children

In parenting, we always hear buzzwords like “critical thinking” or “think critically”. In this context is about nurturing our children to think critically. We often hear this term as parents due to its importance in developing our children to be the next generation's leaders.

What does critical thinking mean?

It is the ability to compare, contrast, evaluate, understand, organize and classify information. That’s a lot of words, but you get the gist. Critical thinking is mostly applied to solve problems and/or to analyze a piece of information.

It may seem a lot to ask for a child to think critically. Nevertheless, doing it early can set a foundation that should be helpful for their development and future careers. Researchers say to kickstart a child’s critical thinking skill by making logic and scientific reasoning explicit or engaging them in a debate-like situation.

Children are naturally curious yet when they ask us a question, they always expect a straightforward answer. Rephrase the question to be more thought-provoking. Ask them what they think, the ‘whys’ and the ‘hows. This would allow the children to think more deeply about the subject. Present to them some pieces of evidence and logical reasoning so that they can think about other perspectives of the answer as well.

Another great way to develop critical thinking is to open conversations about biases. Kids can still understand how emotions or feelings can affect their judgment in any given situation. The key here is to let them understand and think why they are feeling that and give their reasons why they feel that. For example, if you say to children, what you think about eating insects, they will react and answer that it is disgusting. However, we know that in some parts of the world, this is considered normal.

The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) is prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff during hot weather. They've outlined several measures for schools to implement:

Hold classes indoors: Outdoor activities will be postponed when it's too hot.

Monitor student exposure: School officials will keep an eye on activities that could put students at risk in the heat.

Stay hydrated: Schools will ensure a sufficient supply of clean drinking water and encourage students to bring their own water bottles (especially for those who aren't fasting).

Drink up!: Students will be advised to drink plenty of water to stay cool.

Dormitory support: Schools will provide drinking water to dorm students if needed.

Heatstroke watch: Schools will be vigilant and prepared to work with clinics and hospitals if any students experience heat-related complications.

The MOE encourages schools to follow these guidelines, stay informed about local weather conditions, and comply with any additional recommendations from authorities to ensure everyone's well-being.
