MW3 Hits $1 Billion Sales

Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) has reached the $1 billion sales figure in 16 days. This makes it the only video game to break the record of 2009's blockbuster film Avatar, which took 17 days to gross the same amount.

Reportedly, more than 30 million people have bought the Call of Duty (COD) games. What's more, over six million people have registered for the Call of Duty ELITE online service since its debut on 8th November. This number includes more than one million premium accounts. Little wonder then that the publisher hasn't missed the opportunity to compare COD with other franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings.

MW3 is not the only COD game to reach the 1 billion mark. However, it's the fastest one to do so. Additionally, it also holds the record of $400 million in sales in its first 24 hours. It’s a BlackBerry so in the looks department nothing much has really changed. The essential design form is retained - Landscape display with a full QWERTY keypad, 3.5mm handsfree and Micro USB ports, Lock and Silent keys on top with Volume/Zoom and a voice command key on the side. A camera shutter release is also available but rather redundant. RIM has gone with an optical trackpad in the 9700 makingthe new Bold a little more versatile than its predecessor. The display resolution has also been upped to form a half VGA i.e. 480 x 320 pixel resolution to 480 x 360. It’s not much but it’s crystal clear and visually very comfortable even if the display size has been dropped to 2.44 inches

The keypad is somehow not as comfortable as the 9000’s. The 9700’s will take a little longer to get used to. Unlike the original’s the numbers aren’t highlighted making it look a bit plain. The 9700, on the plus side is a little lighter and smaller than its big brother. It’s also a little sportier and on similar lines as the curve 8900. The Chrome finish is definitely better this time around and the elegant leather casing has given way to black plastic. However I can’t fathom why RIM thought it necessary to add the awkward leather finish to just the center of the removable rear panel. It doesn’t do much to improve the looks – it does just the opposite.

Dell Servers 2 billion

Speaking to an audience of suppliers, Dell said the company would spend $25 billion this year in deals with Chinese suppliers and partners, from $23 billion in 2008 and $29 billion last year.

The comments come a day after Dell launched several new server and storage products aimed at cost-conscious companies, in an attempt to boost its market share.

Dell, which supplies roughly 60 percent of the servers used by China's Internet companies, is also interested in accessing the healthcare and education sectors, where information technology could greatly improve productivity, said Dell.

Dell's China sales jumped 81 percent in the last quarter, fueled by a number of government incentives aimed at stimulating consumption, especially in smaller cities.

The iPad can run movies, games and a gamut of applications. And taking on e-readers like Amazon's Kindle, Apple announced a digital bookstore called iBooks that will let users buy from publishers including Pearson Plc's Penguin, News Corp's HarperCollins, and Hachette Book Group.

"What once occupied half your living room can now be dropped in a bag," said NPD analyst Ned May. "It's pulling together a variety of needs (in) a universal entertainment device."

The iPad will sell from late March for as low as $499 for 16 gigabytes of storage. An extra $130 is needed to equip it with third-generation wireless capability.

"Pricing is very aggressive, so it's pretty positive from a mass adoption perspective. It was about $200 lower than what I was expecting," said Brian Marshall, an analyst with Broadpoint Amtech.

Other analysts had speculated that the tablet may cost as much as $1,000.

Shares of Apple rose to as high as $210.58 after the pricing news, up 5.5 percent from their session low. The stock closed up 0.94 percent at $207.88 on Nasdaq, within reach of its all-time high of $215.59 logged on Jan 5.

Apple announced a data plan with AT&T Inc, which appeared to have beaten out Verizon Wireless for the deal.

Shares of AT&T, Apple's carrier partner on the iPhone, rose 1.14 percent while Verizon Communications Inc fell about 1 percent.

iPhone-like anticipation

The iPad is Apple's biggest product launch since the iPhone three years ago, and arguably rivals the smartphone as the most anticipated in the company's history.

Wednesday's event follows months of feverish speculation on the Web and on Wall Street.

Apple hopes to sell consumers on the value of tablets after other technology companies, including Microsoft Corp and Toshiba Corp, have failed in recent years.

As iPod sales wane, Apple is looking for another growth engine.

Jobs said there was a need for a new type of device that would sit between a smartphone and laptop computer, and that can perform tasks like browse the Web and play games.

"If there's going to be a third category of device, it's going to have to be better at these kinds of tasks," said the chief executive, dressed in his trademark black turtleneck and blue jeans.

The iPad has a near life-sized touch keyboard and supports Web browsing.

It comes with a built-in calendar and address book, Jobs said, calling it "awesome."

Some analysts said the iPad, with its multimedia bells and whistles, is a tough competitor for Amazon's Kindle.

But others noted that the Kindle costs less -- $259 for the cheapest version -- and was more tailored for long-form reading.

"This is not an e-reader -- this is a device that can be used to read books," Cowen & Co analyst James Friedland said of the iPad.

"This doesn't change the game -- at the same time, Apple is a formidable competitor and our view is that over time, Apple and Amazon will emerge as the two largest players" in e-books.

Shares of Amazon took a brief hit but recovered to end 2.7 percent higher at $122.75 on Nasdaq.

LG Chocolate Touch (BL40)

The second generation Chocolate phone from Korean manufacturer LG will be available in the UK from the 8th of September. Carphone Warehouse will be offering the handset with contracts exceeding £35 a month. The new BL40 is the fourth member of the Black Label series which LG launched back in 200, and is a beuutiful if frustrating creature.

The BL40 has been dubiously christened “The Chocolate Touch” and its most striking feature is an ultrawide 4-inch LCD touchscreen. The overall look of the phone is strange but oddly attractive; long and thin, black with a snazzy chocolaty red flash at the ends. The front has no physical buttons whatsoever, and the rear is only punctuated by the camera lens, with a little bit of lettering to boast about the Schneider Kreuznach lens.

The BL40 has a silver racing stripe down its long edges, with the phone’s only actual buttons built into it. These include a dedicated camera button, volume/zoom controls and a screen lock button. There is also a built in micro USB port. It’s quite refreshing to see that LG have resisted the temptation to ape the “Home Button” trend which was kick started by Apple’s iPhone and has been imitated by most smartphones ever since.

So, no buttons means that you’re reliant on the usability of the tempered glass touch screen itself. We found the screen to be pleasingly responsive with a minimum of lag. The swipe function works well and on the whole the navigation is far more intuitive than that of older LG models, like the Crystal or the Arena.

The flip from vertical to horizontal display is also fluid, with barely a whisper of a delay between the two modes.

LG seems determined to stay true to its proprietary 3D interface, and who are we to stop it? The swirly cube thing is a very good looking feature and will impress your easily impressed friends. The 2D “side swipe” option is less showy and fairly easy to use.

We've been playing with the OS ever since ever, along through the release candidates, and now at last have the final, "release to manufacturing" (RTM) edition in our grubby paws. Does it live up to its understandable hype and the implicit expectations of a major Microsoft release? Let's proceed on a magical journey to discover the truth for ourselves.

Microsoft got a lot right with its new UI tweaks, but it certainly could've taken things a few logical steps further. For instance, it's odd that there's no built-in support of multifinger trackpad gestures -- why is this something that third party vendors have to figure out all by themselves? We understand that the hardware isn't universal, but we'd like to see Microsoft driving the adoption of such functionality by building clear, reliable support for it into the OS. Two finger scroll in particular: it's the best thing to happen to trackpads since tap-to-click, and we think everybody should've figured that out by now.

. 5 megapixels allows you to take some great photos, with digital stabilisation to help steady shots and comes with easy and quick control when choosing the size of photo, the quality of the shot and such as the white balance. A great feature for viewing your photos can be found in the photo album
of the phone and takes full advantage of the touch screen. Your photos sit on the screen and can be moved around with the fingertip just as though they were laid out on a table, which means you drag them and flip them around to view them. However should the newness wear off, you can revert to standard viewing.The camera also allows the user to shoot video of 120 fps; this is great when it comes to capturing fast action and then replaying it back in slow motion, which is a wonderful and fun feature to include.
