Scholarship Description: A fully-funded Ph.D. position is available in Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto. The Ph.D. candidate will assess the potential for using unmerchantable wood as feedstock for the production of bioenergy. In particular, the candidate will: 1) determine how much logging residue can be recovered from partially harvested stands; 2) develop new inventory methods for estimating how much of this unmerchantable wood is available in central Ontario. To achieve both of these objectives, the candidate will use ground-based harvest trials to inform the development of aerial inventory methods, including light detection and ranging (LiDAR). The candidate may also participate in a larger effort to examine how the production of wood, fibre and fuel can be balanced with the continued provision of other ecosystem services, including the maintenance of biodiversity and storage of carbon.

A major challenge is to realize adequately low source and drain resistances in these highly scaled MOSFETs. In the project selective epitaxy of in-situ doped Si, Si1-xGex or Ge will be integrated in a CMOS process with the aim of achieving low source/drain resistances. The PhD position deals with material growth, device fabrication and electrical characterisation. The research is supported by an existing research project dealing with advanced CMOS technology.

The main goal of the project is to produce transgenic hens expressing key growth factors as a component of egg white, as a novel production method for biologically active proteins for veterinary purposes. The project will involve production of transgenic chicken lines, development of novel protein purification methods and evaluation of the proteins produced. A strong track record in molecular biology and some experience of protein purification technologies are required.
This project will give the postdoctoral scientist the opportunity to develop new skills and to work in collaboration with a major animal health company.
