Despite ongoing cost-of-living challenges and inflationary pressures, the Philippines emerges as one of the regional leaders in salary optimism. According to the latest 2026 Salary Pulse Report released by Jobstreet by SEEK, the Philippines ranks second in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region for pay satisfaction, with 80% of Filipino workers feeling fairly or well paid; just behind Indonesia’s 81%.

However, the report reveals a critical primary insight for today's employment landscape: getting fairly paid no longer equals workplace contentment, as only 59% report being happy with their salary, highlighting a disconnect between what they consider fair and what they’d like to earn. In parallel, 45% of respondents say that their earnings still fall below their actual cost-of-living needs.

The Salary Pulse Report was conducted in February 2026, gathering over a thousand employed respondents in the Philippines. Jobstreet by SEEK, through this report, seeks to focus on attitudes and experiences around pay, including how fairly people feel paid, how happy they are with their salary, and how they approach pay conversations.

On salary fairness and work happiness

The 2026 Salary Pulse Report uncovers a notable disconnect between perceived market fairness and actual salary happiness. Among employees who view their pay as "fair (about right)," only 44% are actually satisfied with that level of remuneration, leaving 56% unsatisfied.

This indicates that workers evaluate salary not merely against industry benchmarks, but against their workload, how well they feel rewarded, and how it sustains their lifestyle. Employees’ expectations, as the report suggests, are likewise shaped by how strongly they believe their contribution is valued, and by how well their salary supports what matters to them outside of work.

Salary happiness has also been the driving motivation for Filipinos to stay in their jobs. When workers in the Philippines are happy with their pay, they're over 2.2x more likely to feel motivated and willing to put in extra effort at work. Conversely, unhappy workers are 2.9x more likely to actively look for a new job.

The Salary Pulse Report also finds that many workers in the Philippines are willing to make compromises, but highly value positive work culture. About 28% of employees stated they would consider relocating to another city or country for a 10% raise. Yet, the same workers are far less likely to sacrifice a positive workplace environment in exchange for a toxic culture for a 10% pay increase.

Generational priorities further shape compensation sentiment across the country. Millennials feel the most financially squeezed, with around half (54%) who are happy with their pay stating their salary falls below their standard of living needs, resulting in a lower salary happiness score (54%) compared to Gen Z (61%) and Gen X (60%).

Some still prefer bamboo for roasting, while others rely on closely guarded ingredients to keep the meat tender and the skin crisp.

These hometown touches are part of what visitors can discover at the 10th Cebu Lechon Festival at The Mactan Newtown. The event brings together lechon makers from across Cebu, giving each participating locality the chance to present the ingredients, methods, and flavors that define its roast.

My Paparts Lechon serves up what many consider the definitive Lapu-Lapu lechon experience. Ronan Murillo, owner of My Paparts lechon and 2026 Cebu Lechon Festival Best Lechonero, attributes their signature taste to two key steps: "We add pineapple tidbits to our seasoning for a hint of natural sweetness, and we spread the charcoal evenly so every inch roasts at the same pace," Murillo notes. The careful process yields juicy, flavorful meat beneath skin that stays extraordinarily crisp for more than four hours.

Alcoy Tourism office staff Michelle Catulpos shared that “Lemongrass, onions, and garlic provide the familiar aroma, with a generous amount of lemongrass giving the roast its distinct fragrance.”

Alcoy’s food story also goes beyond lechon. The municipality is home to local delicacies such as bibingka, torta, tostado, and budbud domino, giving visitors more reasons to explore the flavors found in southern Cebu.

Alcoy brought its best to the festival launch, showcasing a prized lechon that outsized all the rest.

Argao keeps its preparation closer to a traditional provincial style. Argao Lechonero James Labajo, the Sugbuanon Paksiw Wars 2026 champion, shared that he uses “Shoka,” a vinegar brand from Argao in cooking lechon, giving it a distinct flavor. He adds that seasoning must be tuned to the pig’s age and weight, with cooking lasting anywhere from two to three hours.

Barili brings a different element to the process by using the traditional bamboo instead of the modern steel roasting rod. “As it heats over the fire, the bamboo gives off its own aroma, which becomes part of the finished lechon," said Barili Tourism office staff Joemar Saban. The recipe uses locally sourced ingredients and a lighter hand with seasoning, allowing the pork and the roasting process to carry much of the flavor.

Patience is everything," says Michael Rosal, a local lechonero from Samboan. For a 30-kilogram pig, Rosal takes two and a half to three hours over the charcoal, keeping it at a careful distance so the heat never gets too intense. To give his lechon its signature touch, he incorporates Samboan’s local rum into his blend of seasonings—a trick he relies on to tenderize the meat and release a rich fragrance as it slow-roasts.

Mobile banking has made managing money more convenient, but it's also given scammers more opportunities to target unsuspecting users. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), social engineering attacks, including phishing, account takeovers, and identity theft, accounted for 76% of reported cyber fraud losses in 2025. As scams become more sophisticated, banks are adding stronger security features to help customers stay protected.

Metrobank recently rolled out several new security enhancements in the Metrobank App designed to give users more control over their accounts while making it harder for fraudsters to access their money.

Here are the four new features:

1. Get a 24-hour safety buffer with Cooling-Off Period

Metrobank now automatically activates a 24-hour Cooling-Off Period whenever critical security settings are changed. This means when important account settings are changed, such as your password or registered device, all transactions in your app are temporarily disabled for 24 hours. This protects you from scammers who will attempt to change your account details and gives you time to notice any suspicious activity, secure your account, and report unauthorized changes before any money leaves your account.

2. Lock your savings instantly with Money Lock

One of the biggest concerns after falling victim to a phishing scam is how quickly fraudsters can transfer your money. Metrobank’s Money Lock feature lets you instantly lock part or all of your available balance directly from the app. Once locked, the funds cannot be transferred or used for transactions—including scheduled transactions—until you unlock them yourself. Even if someone gains access to your card, your Money Locked savings remain protected. Before locking your funds, make sure you have enough available balance to cover any upcoming or scheduled transactions to avoid disruptions.

3. Have extra protection through Geolocation checks

Metrobank has also added Geolocation as an additional layer of protection. The app checks whether a transaction is being initiated from your registered mobile device and your device’s location. If something appears unusual or inconsistent, the system can flag suspicious activity and help prevent unauthorized transactions from pushing through. While invisible during normal use, this feature works behind the scenes to strengthen account security.

4. Double-check who you're sending money to with Payee Verification

Ever worried about sending money to the wrong account because of a typo? Metrobank's new Payee Verification feature helps reduce that risk. Before completing a transfer to another Metrobank account, the app displays a masked version of the recipient's registered account name. This allows you to confirm that you're sending money to the correct person before finalizing the transaction. It's a simple addition that can help prevent costly transfer mistakes.

These new security enhancements are part of Metrobank's continuing efforts to strengthen digital banking security while supporting the government's broader anti-scam initiatives under the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA) and the laws amendments under BSP Circular No. 1213.

A temple dancer’s devotion. A warrior’s divided heart. A priest’s consuming desire. Their story moves between passion and betrayal, life and afterlife. This August, Ballet Manila brings its PRIMA Season to a grand conclusion with the rare full-length staging of Marius Petipa’s timeless classic, La Bayadère, at the Aliw Theater on August 14 at 8 :00 p.m., and August 15 and 16 at 5:00 p.m.

Set against the backdrop of ancient India, La Bayadère tells the story of Nikiya, a temple dancer bound by love, and Solor, the warrior torn between passion and duty. Their fates intertwine with Gamzatti, the rajah’s daughter, and the High Brahmin, whose desires ignite betrayal and tragedy. The ballet unfolds across opulent courts and sacred temples before dissolving into the ethereal Kingdom of the Shades.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the return of Ballet Manila founder and artistic director, Lisa Macuja Elizalde to the Philippines from Russia where her most notable achievement was being the first foreign soloist of the then Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky Ballet). Staging this full-length masterpiece as the crowning jewel of PRIMA carries immense personal significance. She calls La Bayadère one of the great "white ballets," alongside Giselle and Swan Lake.

These classics are known for their ethereal scenes where ballerinas, dressed in white, move in perfect unison with every line exposed and every detail revealed. Among them, Lisa believes La Bayadère is the ultimate test of skill. Its Kingdom of the Shades sequence in Act III is celebrated worldwide as a pinnacle of discipline and artistry. Yet she is confident Ballet Manila's corps de ballet is ready. "Ballet Manila is the only company in the Philippines with this kind of superior ensemble," she says. "That is why it deserves its place in our 31st performance season."

Leading the production are two of the Mariinsky Ballet's brightest stars—Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim—whose acclaimed partnership captivated Manila in Don Quixote(2025). They return in the roles they know by heart: Nikiya and Solor.

Mariinsky prima ballerina Renata Shakirova brings vulnerable humanity to Nikiya, embracing the character's emotional journey. "The first act is full of openness and love, but everything changes in Act 2 where it becomes tragic," she says. "Every part I feel deep inside me. All the emotions of Nikiya, I feel I live through."

Alongside her, Kimin Kim—renowned for his gravity-defying leaps—sees Solor as a role defined by emotional truth rather than technical feats. "Technique is supposed to be there already from the very beginning," he explains. "I try to make it all look easy, so the technique doesn't look like work. More important is that I can show emotion and the depth of the character."

Their partnership, built on complete trust, transforms choreography into conversation. "Onstage, we believe in each other completely," Renata shares. "That trust allows us to dance not only with technique, but with emotion."

For Lisa, collaborations like these continue to elevate Ballet Manila. She recalls audience members from Korea and Germany traveling to Manila for Don Quixote, then praising Ballet Manila alongside the world's finest companies. "That made me proud—not just of Renata and Kimin, but of our dancers, our school, and our thirty-one years of building a company that can hold its own on the global stage."

In the Philippines, this offers an opportunity to rediscover sago, not simply as an ingredient in familiar desserts like halo-halo and taho, but as a versatile crop with the potential to nourish communities, preserve cultural heritage, and support more sustainable livelihoods.

That vision is already taking root in Caraga, where the Manobo community established the country's first sago palm flour enterprise. It stands as an example of how indigenous knowledge can create lasting opportunities, adding value to a traditional crop while strengthening local livelihoods and inspiring the next generation to carry these practices forward. That indigenous production base lines up with the region's broader trajectory, since Asia Pacific held over 50% of global sago revenue as of 2023, with production in countries like Indonesia and the Philippines driving that dominance.

Community’s Needs and the Sago Harvest Process

Today, consumers are becoming more intentional about what they eat—not just how food tastes, but where it comes from, whether it is healthy, and how it impacts the environment. Ewil M. Woloil, a 23-year-old is championing this vision through the Merdesa Village School (SEKAM), a program by the Bentara Papua Association that engages village youth in natural resource management. In South Sorong, the community has transformed its sago forests into a source of healthy, sustainable food rooted in environmental stewardship.

For the people of South Sorong, sago is more than a staple, it is part of their identity. Guided by the Tehit Knasaimos philosophy, "Tabraw'o mamfe teme," meaning "The forest is our Mother," generations have protected diverse sago varieties while caring for their ancestral lands. But this sacred relationship was once threatened by massive illegal logging and the expansion of timber companies before the 2000s, which left the land barren. However, the community began restoring them through sago reforestation in 2018–2019 to improve water absorption in the soil.

Woloil shares, "We tried to educate the community to replant the sago they cut and use barren forest land for reforestation. Our struggle has been long; since 1996, the community has consistently rejected palm oil to ensure this forest remains."

This awareness was further strengthened after the community conducted a comparative study in Riau, where they realized their sago forests were unique, growing in slightly peaty lands that require special care. Today, women lead seed selection and household food security, while youth are helping ensure these traditions continue for future generations.

Mentorship and Empowerment Through the Bentara Papua Station

To support the work of Ewil and the SEKAM youth, the Bentara Papua Association established the Sira Bentara Papua Station in South Sorong as a hub for agriculture, food processing, and organizational learning. Bringing together youth and women from the Knasaimos community, the station develops high-quality sago products under the Tepung Sagu Mangsir brand.

"Our main goal is to prove they do not need to leave their hometown to prosper; it is enough to process what is on their own customary land," says Alink Syafril, Coordinator of the Sira Bentara Papua Station.

One of the biggest challenges was changing the perception that sago was only for household consumption. With an uncertain market, many were hesitant to produce commercially. Through mentorship, training, and product promotion, community members gained the confidence to market their products and engage with government agencies.

"The initial spirit had declined due to marketing limitations, but after we facilitated training, product introductions, and volunteer support, they began to see the economic opportunities from sago processing," says Ewil.

Today, the community is expanding beyond sago flour into noodles, cookies, cakes, cendol, meatballs, and functional snacks. This effort to create added value for sago can serve as a support for other businesses, such as ecotourism, so they can reinforce one another.

Alink Syafril adds, "In addition to helping with product development mentorship, we also assist in obtaining product permits and mentoring marketing strategies so the products can penetrate wider markets and not stop halfway. By cutting the distribution chain and strengthening the institutional capacity of residents, we help build a restorative economic foundation where the financial profits gained will be cycled back to restore the forest and strengthen social cohesion in South Sorong."

Restorative Economy, Social, and Environmental Impact

These initiatives are creating lasting economic, social, and environmental impact. Farmers and women's groups have gained an additional source of income, with members earning an average of IDR 1,000,000 more from sago product sales than they did in 2018–2019. The additional income helps cover household expenses and supports children's education from elementary school through university.

"Welfare does not have to come from destroying nature, but from how we honor what the sago forest has provided," says Alink Syafril.

Women and youth participation has increased by 60%, giving more community members opportunities to learn entrepreneurship. Through the Kna Mandiri Cooperative, sago products are now marketed in souvenir shops across Sorong City and at provincial exhibitions.

The initiative has also contributed to environmental restoration. Since the program began, around five hectares of sago forests have been replanted, reviving at least 11 companion tree species and protecting four superior local sago varieties: Falya dla, Fa Sampe, Fablen, and Fanomik.

Ewil concludes with a strong message: "Our great hope is that the community remains steadfast in guarding the forest. The involvement of youth today is a guarantee that in the future, there will be no more barren forests and no more youth who lose their identity as indigenous children of Papua."

Legion Powers Competition at One of the World’s Largest Esports Events

From competition arenas and broadcast studios to player facilities and fan experiences, Legion hardware will power key aspects of EWC 2026, enabling peak performance across one of the world's biggest esports events. EWC 2026 players will compete using Legion Tower 7i and Tower 5i desktop PCs. This year, athletes will also be competing on Legion monitors as they fight for the top podium spots.

This partnership has already inspired significant hardware innovation from Lenovo in the Legion Pro Rollable Concept, a 16” rollable Lenovo PureSight OLED technology screen showcased earlier this year at CES 2026. Designed for esports athletes who need a single portable device that allows them to train for high-level competitions around the world, this gaming laptop concept’s displayexpands from 16” to both 21.5” and 24” sizes. EWC attendees will be able to demo the Legion Pro Rollable in the Legion booth.

Bringing Fans Closer to the Action

Legion branding will appear across EWC 2026 broadcasts and onsite experiences, including the Legion Gauntlet stage and dedicated festival zones featuring Legion laptops, tablets, and peripherals available for fans during the event. Fans will have a chance to win Legion hardware through on-site challenges, while exclusive content featured across Legion channels during EWC 2026 will offer a closer look at the players, setups, and hardware used across the competition.

Building on a Growing Global Esports Partnership

The partnership follows Lenovo’s debut at EWC 2025, where more than 2,000 Legion devices were used across tournament operations, broadcast studios, creator zones, and festival activations. Legion branding appeared across all 24 game titles and seven weeks of international broadcasts, reaching 750 million people across multiple regions and languages worldwide.

The Esports World Cup 2026 will be hosted in Paris from July 6 to August 23, welcoming more than 2,000 players and 200 Clubs from over 100 countries to compete across 24 games and 25 tournaments for a share of the record-breaking $75 million+ prize pool.
