"In the beginning, we did not think about business at all. What mattered was that the land was safe and not further damaged; the economy came later," said Dilah.

As conditions improved and the recovery process progressed, the village began processing citronella into essential oil. They named Lana Tumbavani, meaning 'citronella oil' in the local Kaili language. While the process is labor-intensive, yielding just 200 milliliters of oil from 200 kilograms of leaves after an eight-month wait, the enterprise remains committed to prioritizing quality over volume.

Still, early impacts are evident; three to four households are now involved, earning modest but meaningful additional income, while citronella planting has helped stabilize less than one hectare of previously unproductive land and is believed to have reduced local flood risks. Tumbavani shows that a restorative economy follows a clear cause-and-effect chain: land recovery leads to ecological stability, enabling consistent plant growth and, in turn, generating income. Previously unproductive land now creates value, with one hectare of citronella contributing to both village enterprise revenue and household earnings. "If the environment does not recover, there will be no product, and there will be no income. What we are doing is simply proving that caring for nature can directly impact the residents' economy," Dillah stated.

This impact is reflected in the participants’ stability, with participating households seeing their income rise by around 50% between 2024 and early 2025. The model deliberately reverses conventional development priorities, prioritizing environmental recovery over economic gain. Future growth is capped at 15% to protect ecological balance. Supported by Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Lestari (LTKL), Tumbavani exemplifies how restoring nature can serve as the foundation for durable, community-driven economic growth.

"Usually, nature is squeezed first, then the economy is shared. Here, nature is restored first, and then the economy grows. That is what makes it more durable," said Nedya.

Through the GInsure feature of GCash, millions of underserved Filipinos now have access to insurance protection

New ways for providing insurance are needed to expand financial protection for vulnerable and underserved Filipinos, who face the most risk but are traditionally excluded from financial services.

This was highlighted by GCash, the Philippine’s leading finance app, during a recent banking and insurance summit. According to GCash VP and Head of its digital insurance platform GInsure, Willy De Ocampo, digital platforms can play a key role in addressing the country’s protection gap. The Philippines recorded an insurance penetration rate of 1.79 percent at the end of 2025, improving from 1.67 a year earlier, but still below the country’s 2 percent target and behind peers across Southeast Asia.

By integrating vital protection into routine financial transactions, GCash helps to dismantle traditional barriers to insurance. “Many Filipinos see insurance as necessary, but they often feel the process is complicated or expensive,” De Ocampo said. “We want to make insurance easy for our customers and show them that protection is something they already have access to.”

GInsure has enabled over 20 million Filipinos to access insurance as of Q4 2025, up over 40% since the first quarter. In addition, 75% of GInsure customers are located outside Metro Manila and 76% belong to socioeconomic classes D and E, highlighting the pressing need to extend protection across all levels of society.

More inclusive protection

To help solve the protection gap, GCash through its insurance platform GInsure is pioneering new ways to expand protection through its embedded and free insurance solutions within the app. “Our goal is to create innovative and relevant protection embedded in everyday transactions,” De Ocampo said. “By integrating insurance directly into financial services people already use, we reduce barriers and help more Filipinos prepare for emergencies.”

Filipinos can stay protected from unauthorized transactions, from hacking, phishing, smishing, malware scamming or other similar scams, including unauthorized access to their GCash account for up to ₱15,000 for as low as P30 for 30 days with embedded protection from GInsure: Express Send Scam Insurance, powered by Chubb. The policy also covers unauthorized transactions on supported online merchants and app-based payment channels, such as Lazada, Shopee, and the Play Store.

The e-wallet also offers Filipinos free protection bundled with digital transactions like applying for a loan or buying mobile load within GCash. Fuse Financing Inc. (Fuse), the lending arm of GCash, offers free health insurance underwritten by Oona Insurance, covering hospitalization allowance through GInsure, to borrowers of its GLoan feature for loans worth ₱500.00 and up.

Meanwhile, Filipinos can also access free health and accident insurance through GInsure whenever they buy mobile load. Underwritten by FPG Insurance, the free insurance covers up to ₱30,000 (including up to ₱2,500 hospital assistance) for as long as 30 days every load purchase.

As millions of Filipino commuters prepare for the annual Holy Week exodus, transport frontliners—including bus drivers, conductors, and terminal personnel—are now better equipped to respond to medical emergencies, made possible through the strategic partnership between Bell-Kenz Pharma, various key transport stakeholders, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Reinforcing its commitment to public safety, Bell-Kenz Pharma ceremonially turned over three Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on March 23, 2026—two units to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) and one to the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (DOTr-SAICT). This initiative strengthens the emergency response capabilities of frontline personnel during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.

The turnover builds on the success of the February 24, 2026 Sagip CPR training, “Paghahanda Para sa Oplan Biyaheng Ayos 2026: Sagip CPR,” a collaboration between Bell-Kenz Pharma, DOTr, PITX, and other.

The program trained over 800 transport personnel—including drivers, conductors, terminal staff, security personnel, and members of the Philippine Coast Guard—transforming them into capable first responders equipped with life-saving knowledge and skills.

Present at the landmark ceremonial turnover were Rear Admiral Oliver Sy Tanseco of the Philippine Coast Guard and Mr. Patrick Larraga, Corporate Branding and Public Affairs Head of Bell-Kenz Pharma. In November 2025, Fiuu reported US$8.3 billion in TPV for the first three quarters of the year. By year-end, the company processed an additional US$4.7 billion in the final quarter to reach its full-year total.

Processing over US$13 billion in TPV and surpassing 960 million transactions across Southeast Asian markets, Fiuu’s platform operates at a significant scale, supporting businesses and institutions throughout the region.
