Access to quality learning materials can help students make the most of every school year. For many visually impaired learners, these specialized resources remain essential to their studies.

Recognizing this need for more inclusive education, Skyro, an SEC-registered fintech company in the country, through its corporate social responsibility initiative, SkyroShares, recently held a Back-to-School outreach activity at the Philippine National School for the Blind (PNSB) in Pasay City.

The outreach benefited more than 170 participants, including elementary to senior high school students, learners with multiple disabilities, dormitory students from low-income or provincial areas, and teachers.

The program featured a series of engaging activities, including dance and musical presentations by students, games, food pack distribution, and the turnover of school donations. Partially and completely blind students were able to receive school backpacks containing both specialized learning materials, such as Braille paper and slate & stylus sets, along with essential school supplies such as notebooks, pens, crayons, and paper. Students residing in dormitories were also provided with hygiene and food essentials.

Meanwhile, the faculty received educational materials and equipment to support their teaching needs, including a printer with ink, embossing paper, bond paper, and wall fans. The school was also gifted with essential equipment such as a portable embossing machine (Index Braille Basic-D V5), drum and lyre sets, Braille staplers, industrial fans, a refrigerator for dormitory use, and a speaker system with wireless microphone.

Ms. Corazon Salvador, the school principal, expressed her appreciation for Skyro’s Back-to-School outreach: “We are deeply grateful for your generosity. Your support goes beyond the items you donate. With the effects of the fuel crisis rippling across sectors, public transport is among the most severely impacted. Jeepney drivers are bearing the brunt of this volatility as rising costs threaten both their livelihoods and national mobility. The impact is felt far beyond the roads; this means tightening the budget of many Filipino households as well.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) earlier rolled out a fuel subsidy program for public utility vehicle drivers and operators nationwide. The initiative aims to help cushion the impact of the crisis, which also drove up the prices of basic commodities and utilities.

GCash works hand-in-hand with the DOTr, LTFRB, and other relevant government agencies to deliver the financial aid efficiently. The nation-building thrust of GCash enables drivers and operators to receive the subsidy straight to their e-wallets, making the disbursement process seamless and safe. Digitizing the payout eliminates the need to travel or wait in long lines, ensuring that aid reaches them without further delaying their livelihood.

Among the recent recipients are the drivers and operators of Batangas Transport Cooperative (BATRASCO) in Lipa, Batangas. Romeo Macailao, president of the transport group, said that about 70 percent to 80 percent of their members were able to secure their financial aid already via GCash.

"Masaya sila nung natanggap nila iyon kasi napakadali lang, di na nila kailangan pumila ng matagal," the BATRASCO president added. (They were happy when they received it because it was very easy, and they no longer had to wait in long lines.)

Enabling financial inclusion

For Jayson, a 46-year-old jeepney driver from Brgy. Kwatro, Lipa City, the partnership meant more than just receiving aid. It also introduced him to how e-wallets like GCash can help people in their financial journey.

Jayson, 46, opens a GCash account for the first time.

"First time ko pang mag-GCash nung na-receive ko yung ayuda, tinuruan ako nung anak ko paano i-set up," he shared. (It was my first time using GCash when I received the aid, and my child taught me how to set it up.)

Jayson is now a GCash user, marking his first step into the formal financial system. By opening his first official account through the app, he gains not only access to government aid and social services, but also secure financial tools that were once beyond his reach.

Convenient, seamless transactions

Both Roosevelt, 38, and Lito, 53, jeepney drivers from Bagong Pook, Lipa City, appreciated the convenience of receiving their financial aid through digital disbursements.

They did not have to spend hours in line. With a verified GCash account, the drivers were able to get the subsidy immediately, allowing them to have extra funds for their needs.

"Matagal na akong may GCash kaya natuwa ako nung nalaman kong doon na papasok ang ayuda. Napakabilis ng transaction at di na kailangang pumila pa," Roosevelt said. (I have been using GCash for a long time, so I was glad when I found out that the aid would be credited there. The transaction was very fast, and there was no need to line up anymore.)

"Hindi naman ako nahirapan mag-GCash, tinuruan lang ako ng aking asawa," Lito added. (I didn’t have a hard time using GCash; I was simply taught by my spouse.)

Lito also encouraged other drivers who do not have a GCash account to open one so they can reap the benefits of having access to digital financial services.

Dignified access to financial services

More than just convenience, digital disbursements enable drivers to focus on what matters most for their livelihood: staying on the road.

Loreto, a 42-year-old jeepney driver from Banaybanay, Lipa City, said he usually had to line up for half a day just to receive his subsidy. This meant losing around ₱700 in potential income, which is money he could have used to support his family’s needs.

"Ngayon, isang click na lang, nandoon na ang GCash. Nagagamit mo pa ang yung oras para kumita pa," Loreto said. (Now, it’s just one click, and GCash is there. You can even use the time to earn more.)

Alberto, 51-year-old jeepney driver from Bagong Pook, Lipa City, agreed. “Mas madali makuha yung ayuda ... di ka pa naaabala sa trabaho so mas maraming kikitain. Pag sa GCash, napaka-easy," he said. (It’s easier to receive the aid… and you’re not disrupted from work, so you can earn more. With GCash, it’s very easy.)

GCash continues to champion dignified access to digital financial services for all Filipinos. It shows how support can be delivered in ways that protect both time and livelihood, especially for workers in vulnerable sectors. In addition, this points to the growing role of digital platforms in making essential services more equitable and accessible.

Drivers can verify their eligibility for the LTFRB fuel subsidy by checking the official beneficiary list through the LTFRB Official Facebook Page (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-LTFRB) or by contacting their regional LTFRB office.

Eligible beneficiaries are usually registered PUV drivers and operators with valid franchises and updated LTFRB and LTO records. Drivers may need to present valid IDs and franchise documents, and those not included in the list may request record validation through LTFRB.

Building a Sustainable Local Cacao Business: Lessons from a Women-Led Village Enterprise

In Pejalin Village, Indonesia, women are turning cacao into premium chocolate while protecting nature.

Chocolate fever is sweeping the globe. From the rise of premium chocolate trends in Europe to the viral "Dubai chocolate" phenomenon on social media, cacao has once again ascended as a high-value commodity. Yet cacao is far from a new crop in the Philippines. Introduced during the Spanish colonial period, it has long been woven into Filipino culture through traditional products such as tablea and tsokolate de batirol. Today, chocolate is no longer just a confectionery staple, it is a premium product that reflects origin, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

The Philippines is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing global demand for cacao, with the country's chocolate confectionery market projected to reach USD 707.52 million by 2030. To ensure this growth translates into long-term value for farmers and the industry, the Department of Agriculture and industry stakeholders have launched the Philippine Cacao Industry Roadmap 2026–2030, which aims to build a more productive, profitable, resilient, and globally competitive cacao sector. The roadmap comes as the Philippines continues to gain international recognition, including being named among the world's Top 50 Cacao of Excellence producers, reflecting the country's potential to compete in the premium cacao market.

As the Philippines continues to build a more sustainable and competitive cacao sector, it can also draw lessons from neighboring countries on future-proofing the industry. In Indonesia, local communities are at the heart of the cacao value chain. Pejalin Village in Tanjung Palas District, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan, demonstrates this through its women-led cacao enterprise, where village women are not only business actors but also guardians of water springs and champions of a restorative economy.

The Anxiety of Pejalin Women and the Threat of Land Conversion

In Indonesia, that vision of a sustainable cacao economy is taking shape in Pejalin Village, where women are proving that cacao can protect both livelihoods. Yet in Pejalin Village that stands at a crossroads. Oil palm continues to expand, covering around 5,000 hectares, vastly outnumbering cacao at around 1,000 hectares. Yet for the community, cacao is more than an economic crop, it also helps safeguard vital water springs, making it both an environmental and economic asset.

This belief inspired the formation of the Kita Merong Joint Business Group (KUBE). A nine-member women’s group led by 38-year old leader Mardiatin (known as Ibu Yen), the group shifted into cacao in late 2023 after Pejalin Village received support from the Ecological-Based District Budget Transfer (TAKE) for green economic development.

“At that time, cacao existed in the village, but it was mostly taken by outsiders at low prices. Farmers were losing their spirit. We thought, if we could process it right here in the village, the value would be entirely different,” said Mardiatin.

With the support of the village government, KUBE began operating cacao processing equipment in March 2024, transforming raw beans into higher-value chocolate products. For Mardiatin, adding value to cacao is also a way to resist oil palm expansion.

“If cacao has value and farmers can live off it, they won't easily abandon their gardens. This is also about protecting our water and soil,” she said

Production Processes, Quality Standards, and the Local Value Chain

Through KUBE Kita Merong, locally grown cacao beans are transformed into value-added products under the Kayan Koa brand. Five of the group's nine members run the production house, processing around 10 kilograms of dry cacao beans daily, or 300 kilograms each month.

From bean selection and roasting to winnowing, grinding, and cocoa butter extraction, the group oversees the entire production process. They produce dark and milk chocolate bars, cocoa powder, and 3-in-1 ready-to-brew products, making Kayan Koa one of the few MSMEs in Bulungan to manage the cacao value chain from upstream to downstream.

“What differentiates us is that we process all the cacao ourselves until it is finished, not just the chocolate bars. The powder and the butter are also from here in Bulungan, so the taste is consistently authentic,” said Mardiatin.

Despite the success, the journey has not been without challenges. For many farmers, fermentation is seen as time-consuming, delaying much-needed daily income. Consequently, cacao beans are often sold unfermented, which affects the flavor profile and consistency of the final product.

“We do not dare take unfermented cacao because it greatly affects the taste and quality. Therefore, we must also provide education and insights to farmers so that the processing is correct,” said Mardiatin.

To address this, KUBE Kita Merong has partnered with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on fermentation training and field trials, while students from Universitas Kaltara (UNIKALTARA) in North Kalimantan are developing innovations such as white chocolate and cacao husk tea. Mardiatin believes these efforts will strengthen business resilience by diversifying the village's cacao products.

Restorative Economic Impact, Employment, and the Hope for Cacao Preservation

Kayan Koa has brought tangible benefits to both cacao cultivation and community income. All beans are purchased from Pejalin farmers at stable prices ranging from 80,000 IDR to 90,000 IDR per kilogram (around 274 PHP to 308 PHP). For the group, monthly turnover has increased significantly, from around 3 to 5 million IDR (around 10,269 PHP to 7,114 PHP) at the start of production to approximately 16 million IDR per month (around 54,765 PHP).

The venture has also created jobs for local women and youth, who support production during peak demand. Today, Kayan Koa products are sold in souvenir shops and local minimarkets and regularly showcased at national exhibitions with support from the regional government and Bank Indonesia.

“Women in the village now have a role, an income, and are involved in development. My hope is that our production house can soon be fully established and that we can deepen our processing training so the quality remains consistent,”Mardiatin said.

PINUS has affirmed its commitment to elevating these stories to the national stage. Through civil society networks and digital platforms, the story of KUBE Kita Merong is published on eftindonesia.org and presented at forums like the 6th National Conference on Ecological Funding, where PINUS advocates for the success of local community initiatives.

The Kayan Koa initiative shows that a restorative economy is more than just a concept; it is a reality rooted in the village. Through cacao processing led by a community of women, economic value is not just increased. It is cycled back to local farmers, preserving water sources, and opening up opportunities for women and the younger generation.

By bringing these services directly to the community, the initiative aims to strengthen awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD), support early detection efforts, and encourage QCitizens to take proactive steps toward better kidney health.

The Quezon City Government, in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc., officially launched the “Iwas Dialysis, Ligtas Kidneys: Get CheCKD habang maaga pa!” program on June 22, 2026, in celebration of National Kidney Month.

The citywide initiative aims to strengthen early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and improve kidney health awareness among QCitizens, particularly those at increased risk. Through community-based screening and education, the program encourages earlier health-seeking behavior and supports timely referral to appropriate care before complications arise.

In the Philippines, CKD remains a growing public health concern, with an estimated 13 million Filipinos, or 11.2% of the population, living with the condition, many of whom remain undiagnosed until later stages. Early detection is critical, as timely intervention can help slow disease progression and reduce the risk of serious complications.

To date, over 8,000 individuals have undergone kidney health screening and assessment through the program, with Quezon City accounting for nearly half of its total reach. The initiative has been implemented across 21 barangays, primarily in District 1, and recently expanded to District 2, with pilot screening in Barangay Payatasreaching over 200 residents.

The program concluded with a symbolic activity involving representatives from the Quezon City local government, healthcarecommunity, patient organizations, and Boehringer Ingelheim, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing CKD awareness, prevention, and early detection efforts at the community level.
