A community-led plan to bring faster and safer emergency transportation to an upland barangay in Laguna has been named a winner of the 2026 LG Ambassador Challenge.

The LG Ambassador Challenge in the Philippines is an ongoing initiative by LG Electronics that empowers local advocates, organizations, and community leaders to propose and implement sustainable solutions for pressing social, environmental, and healthcare challenges.

The program runs calls for entries for innovative, community-focused project proposals, particularly in areas like medical aid and community healthcare. Winning entries receive funding and institutional support to turn their ideas into action, directly benefiting underserved municipalities across the country.

Titled “Life Saver on Wheels: Ambulance for Upland Brgy. Galalan,” the latest winning project was jointly proposed by Missionary Yoo Byeong-guk and Pastor Ramil B. Repolido to address the challenges residents face when seeking urgent medical care in Barangay Galalan, Pangil, Laguna.

Located in a mountainous area approximately 20 kilometers from the nearest hospital, the barangay has limited transportation options during emergencies. Sitio Gisgis, one of its farthest and most underserved communities, currently has no passable road or vehicle access, making it especially difficult for residents to reach health centers or hospitals.

In the absence of a dedicated barangay ambulance, patients have had to rely on improvised stretchers, being carried manually, motorcycles, private vehicles, and even a barangay garbage truck. These arrangements can result in dangerous delays and unsafe transport conditions during accidents, pregnancy complications, strokes, and other medical emergencies.

The proposal identified senior citizens, children, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities among those most affected by the current situation.

Nakhyun Seong, Managing Director of LG Electronics Philippines, said, “The LG Ambassador Challenge supports individuals who understand their communities’ most pressing needs and are ready to turn that understanding into meaningful action. ‘Life Saver on Wheels’ responds to an urgent and deeply human need: helping residents reach medical care when every minute matters. We are honored to support a project built on compassion, local leadership, and the shared belief that Life’s Good when communities can care for one another.”

A lifeline built around local needs

At the heart of the winning proposal is the acquisition and deployment of a basic life-support ambulance that will serve as Barangay Galalan’s dedicated emergency response vehicle.

The project is designed not only to provide transportation, but also to strengthen the community’s broader emergency response system. Planned activities include coordination with the barangay council, Rural Health Unit, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office; basic first aid and emergency response training for volunteers and staff; the establishment of emergency protocols; and the creation of a hotline or contact system for ambulance requests.

A community awareness campaign will also help residents understand when and how to access the ambulance service.

The project has three main targets: to provide immediate transportation for at least 200 residents requiring urgent medical attention each year, reduce emergency hospital transport delays by 50%, and ensure 24/7 access to safe emergency transportation for all residents of Barangay Galalan.

Pastor Ramil B. Repolido, project co-proponent and designated ambulance manager, said, “For families in Barangay Galalan, access to emergency care can be shaped by distance, terrain, and the availability of safe transportation. This ambulance will give our community a more dependable way to respond during critical situations. More than a vehicle, it represents greater security for residents and the assurance that help can move more quickly when it is needed most.”

Community-managed for long-term impact

Upon procurement, the ambulance will be formally donated to Barangay Galalan and stationed at the barangay hall, making it accessible to residents.

Pastor Repolido will serve as ambulance manager, overseeing scheduling and dispatch coordination, vehicle maintenance and documentation, emergency response protocols, reporting, and accountability.

The ambulance will be operated by trained local personnel, barangay emergency responders, or BDRRMC members, and community health workers. All operators will undergo Basic Life Support or first aid training.

A nurse or trained health worker will also be available on an on-call basis, with support from the Rural Health Center, barangay health workers, including a midwife, and emergency responders.

To sustain the service, ongoing expenses such as fuel, maintenance, minor repairs, and applicable driver allowances will be covered by the Barangay LGU through shared management and operational responsibilities.

The proposal outlines a total project budget of ₱1.6 million. This includes the cost of the ambulance, medical equipment such as a stretcher, oxygen, and blood-pressure set, first aid and emergency supplies, driver and responder training, and initial fuel and maintenance.

Local leadership in motion

The winning proponents bring experience in community engagement, coordination, volunteer mobilization, public service, and health and safety advocacy. Their project reflects a practical response developed by people who understand the realities faced by residents on the ground.

By combining a dedicated emergency vehicle with trained local operators, medical support, clear protocols, and long-term barangay management, “Life Saver on Wheels” aims to strengthen emergency preparedness and community resilience beyond the project’s initial implementation.

For Barangay Galalan, the ambulance represents more than a faster trip to the hospital. It offers families a safer option during critical moments and brings potentially life-saving care closer to a community where difficult terrain has too often stood in the way.

Marcos Jr.’s remarks on the issues surrounding him, stressing that he never sought any favor or special treatment and remains ready to answer the allegations on flood control through the proper legal process.

In a statement, the former Speaker acknowledged the impact of the controversy on his family but said he accepted the President’s position.

“Masakit man ito sa aming pamilya, iginagalang ko ang naging pahayag ng Pangulo. Hindi ako kailanman humingi ng pabor o espesyal na pagtrato," Romualdez said.

During his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announed that cases would be filed against his cousin and other lawmakers in connection with the alleged anomalous flood control projects.

Romualdez said the proper course is to allow due process to take its course and let the evidence determine the outcome.

“Sang-ayon ako na gawin natin ang tama. Ang tama ay ang sumunod sa proseso at hayaan ang ebidensya ang magsalita.”

He maintained that he had committed no wrongdoing and said he was prepared to prove his innocence.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation project is expected to officially conclude by July 2026.

A massive crowd of 1,404 athletes took on the recently concluded Sip Plus Games 2026. The two-day hybrid race attracted 756 male and 648 female competitors, along with passionate spectators cheering on friends and family. The atmosphere was electrifying, boosted by a special appearance from Physical: 100 Season 2 standout, Hong Beom-seok!

Athletes tackled a nine-loop course built entirely in-house, closing with an added final run after Wall Balls before the finish line. Unlike Hyrox, the course also folded in Devil's Press and Step-Ups among its functional stations, giving Sip Plus Games its own distinct stamp on the hybrid race format.

"We didn't want the field to relax until they crossed that line — that's why we added the run after Wall Balls. Every loop was built to test something different, and the last one had to hurt the most. That's the whole point of 'Cross Your Limits,'" said Raquel Bartolome, organizer of Sip Plus Games.

Every finisher took home a Sip Plus Games 2026 finisher's patch as a small, wearable reminder of the hybrid games they'd just conquered.

“Many patients assume that taking maintenance medication automatically means their blood pressure is under control, but that is not always the case,” said Dr. Jhoanna G. Marcelo, cardiologist at a leading specialty heart center in the Philippines. For decades, luxury has been associated with heritage brands, exclusivity, and recognizable logos.

Today, however, the definition is evolving. Among a new generation of designers and consumers alike, luxury is increasingly measured not by status, but by craftsmanship. It is reflected in the precision of a pattern, the quality of a seam, the durability of a garment, and the confidence that comes from wearing something thoughtfully made rather than quickly produced.

For Dioneza, this evolution represents an opportunity for Filipino fashion to define its own identity rather than imitate established fashion capitals.

“We don’t need to compete by trying to be someone else,” he says. “Our strength lies in our craftsmanship, our creativity, and the stories only Filipino designers can tell.”

Where Purpose Began

Long before orangedot became a fashion label, Dioneza’s understanding of design was shaped by necessity. Growing up in Baler, Aurora, he spent much of his childhood watching his mother, a seamstress, carefully cut patterns, stitch garments, and transform simple fabric into something people could wear with pride.

Those quiet moments became his earliest lessons in craftsmanship. He learned that good design wasn’t just about creativity. It demanded patience, discipline, technical skill, and respect for the process.

Years later, while studying Operations Management, he found another classroom.

To help support his education, Dioneza began buying ukay-ukay pieces, repairing them, redesigning them, and selling them to classmates and customers looking for something unique. What started as a practical side hustle gradually became an education in fashion.

Working with secondhand garments taught him to understand construction before aesthetics. Every alteration required him to think differently, solve problems creatively, and maximize what was already available. More importantly, it challenged the idea that value comes from something being brand new.

Instead, he discovered that the true value of a garment lies in the craftsmanship, creativity, and thought invested in it. “I realized creativity isn’t about having unlimited resources,” Dioneza says. “It’s about seeing potential where other people don’t.”

That perspective continues to shape the way he designs today. Before sketching silhouettes or selecting fabrics, he begins with a different question:

What purpose will this garment serve, and why should someone choose to keep it?

Designing with Intention

That philosophy became the foundation of orangedot. Rather than responding to fast-moving trends, the brand was built around creating pieces that remain relevant long after trends have passed.

Its debut HIDA Pleated Series, reflects that approach.

Inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, the collection explores precision, structure, and intentional construction—not to replicate another culture’s aesthetic, but to demonstrate how global influences can be interpreted through a distinctly Filipino perspective.

“For me, being proudly Filipino isn’t about limiting where we find inspiration,” Dioneza explains. “It’s about learning from different cultures while creating work that reflects our own identity and our own standards of craftsmanship.”

As Filipino designers continue to gain international attention, he believes confidence—not imitation—will define the industry’s next chapter. “We shouldn’t be afraid to learn from the world,” he says. “What’s important is creating something that’s authentically ours.”

Fashion often celebrates inspiration. Less frequently, it celebrates editing. For Dioneza, one of the most important parts of the creative process is knowing what not to make.

His background in Operations Management reinforced the idea that every creative decision carries practical consequences, from production efficiency and material waste to long-term brand identity. Some of the designs he personally loved never reached production because they no longer aligned with the collection’s direction or generated unnecessary material waste.

“I’ve learned that saying no is just as important as saying yes,” he says. “Every piece should contribute to something bigger than itself.” In an industry that often rewards constant output, he believes restraint is an underrated creative skill.

Sometimes the strongest design decision is deciding not to create something at all.
