Resembling a junkyard from the outside--but a manicured one--Deja Vu Antiques houses more than 35 central coast antiques stalls. Do take time to explore the diverse selection that includes everything from blue Mason jars to Tiffany lamp shades. I even saw a bouquet of cotton ball plant sprigs that looked to be straight from the fields. Some handicraft items and vintage clothing are also purveyed.

Situated near the north end of the Foxen Canyon wine trail, the Riverbench Vineyard & Winery tasting room is inside a converted 1920s craftsman-style house. But in good weather, most tasters head for tables on the manicured lawn area for an outside tasting under mature, sheltering trees and with a view of the vineyards. Flowers are often blooming around the edges, and hummingbirds dart among them.

Known for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, the winery also make sparkling wines. You can choose from several tasting experiences served in Riedel crystal glasses. I opted for the basic “Riverbench Tour,” which offers two Chardonnays and three Pinot Noirs. The starter was a 2021 Bedrock Chardonnay. A light wine aged in stainless steel, it is pretty in the glass and crisp on the palate. Then came a softer 2021 Estate Chardonnay that was aged in 20% new French oak and presented a creamier feel that I especially enjoyed, followed by a light 2023 Rose of Pinot Noir that was lovely and refreshing on the warm day I tasted. Next came a tasty and smooth 2021 Estate Pinot Noir made from100% Pinot Noir grapes that presented a light spiciness. The final wine was a delicious 2019 Clone 115 Pinot Noir that was more complex and a little spicier than the previous wine, made more special by being aged in 30% new French oak. Only a few wineries in the area make sparkling wines, so I pleased to taste a splash of the 2018 Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine. Made with all Chardonnay grapes, it has bright fruit notes and was a perfect finish to the tasting.

The Riverbench winery has local owner, and its vineyard consists of 115 acres of Pinot Noir and 15 acres of Chardonnay. Food pairings can be improvised with locally-made chocolate truffles or a picnic basket with crackers, prosciutto, and more, and live music is scheduled several times each month. And as with most wineries, becoming a wine club member provides special prices and offerings.

Foxen Canyon Wine Trail

This scenic route winds through 30 miles of rustic back country, from Los Olivos to Santa Maria. On this dedicated wine trail you can visit numerous wineries and taste wines from the oldest appellation in Santa Barbara County. The area is known for cool-climate varietals—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah.

Shaw’s steakhouse is known for its authentic traditional Santa Maria-style barbecue in which the meat is cooked over an open fire of slow-burning native red oak wood that imparts an aromatic smoky-sweet flavor to the meat. Most people come here for a barbecued steak with all the trimmings, but Shaw’s also offers other menu options including fish items and hamburgers. And a well-priced short wine list highlights local wines by the glass and bottle.

The trimmings include a relish tray starter with black olives and crisp celery and carrots, a green salad, garlic bread, a baked potato with two big scoops of butter (or housemade soup), and salsa. Additionally, a side is included of unusual pinquito beans that are grown only on the central coast of California. These beans are about half the size of a regular pink bean and have plenty of flavor. I feasted on a top sirloin that was cooked to my medium specification, and I have enjoyed equivalent deliciousness only in Texas at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. I was hungry but still surprised I was able to eat so much of my meal. If I had been going right home after, I would have loved to have the leftovers the next day.

A landmark since 1917, the Historic Santa Maria Inn attracted the Hollywood legends of yesteryear (Marilyn Monroe was among them), who often were stopping over on their way to Hearst Castle on the coast. Discovering Sedona and the Arizona Desert:
A 3-day itinerary

Day 1

For years, I’ve heard how beautiful Sedona is. I recently saw it for the first time with my life-long friend Susan, who I came to visit in Tucson. She picked me up at the Phoenix Airport and we drove the 119 miles from there on to Sedona, which is quite a bit shorter than the 232 miles from Tucson.

As we approached Sedona, we saw red rock formations on the side of the road and knew we were near.

Though it was a Tuesday afternoon, cars were backed up for miles. While we were amazed by the beauty around us, we were horrified by the invasion of tourists. Sedona has about 10,000 residents, but it gets over 3 million tourists a year. We later learned from locals that Sedona is always overrun by visitors.

The Arizona Department of Transportation installed 12 roundabouts in the busiest part of town where most of the shops, art galleries, and restaurants thrive. It turns out they make it more challenging behind the wheel. Patiently, Susan kept us on the right road heading to the Sedona Southwest Inn, where we were booked for two nights.

Overnight Lodging in Sedona

It was a challenge to find reasonable prices for lodging that provided two beds. During my online search I learned that most rooms were $600/night and up. We were pleased to find something that looked decent at $300/night. Located about a 10-minute drive from the center of town, our inn was quiet and the beds were comfortable, but I can only give it 3.5 stars (out of 5). It had a worn and tired feeling, was motel-like, and our room was not tidied after the first night. But the price included breakfast and, though nothing special, it was adequate.

Shopping in Sedona

Once settled in our room, we ventured out to the nearby Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village. Though very touristy, I appreciated that this large outdoor mall is decorated in the style of its surroundings. But the prices were shocking. A visitor sitting outside a candy shop who was eating a small ice cream scoop pointed to the shop and exclaimed, “Their prices are ridiculous! Over $5 for this little scoop!!" I went into the candy shop but saw nothing that looked good enough or special enough to splurge. We then wandered into a shoe store and a few other shops and the prices reminded me of back home in California where everything is over the top. A lot of the shops at Tlaquepaque are nice, but nothing stood out. However, the weather was great so it offered a pleasant place to sit, browse, and walk around.

Dinner in Sedona

American Creekside Bistro

Owned by the same folks who run the Mesa Grill, another well-known Sedona eatery, the American Creekside Bistro can be quite busy. Book dinner reservations in advance. Since we arrived early, I had time to wander around the Creekside Plaza where the bistro is located. It’s full of shops catering to those who come to Sedona for the vortexes. Sedona has lots of tours and stores just for those who visit in search of crystals, spirituality, and the promise of renewed energy from the assumed magic of a vortex.

Like most of the places we went to, The American Creekside Bistro is very casual and the food is good. We shared an appetizer of Ahi Tuna Nachos made with spiced wonton chips, spicy aioli duo, mango, fresh ginger, and avocado. The main course was Parmesan Crusted Chicken Breast with lemon caper butter, asparagus, whipped potatoes, and dessert was a huge warm Peach Cobbler with caramel ice cream and whipped cream--this was one of the rare times that I couldn't finish something sweet. Overall, the food was plentiful and tasty, and since we shared everything the tab was extremely reasonable.

Day 2

A hike in Sedona

Sedona Airport Loop Trail

After breakfast the following morning, we took road 89A to the Airport Road. This takes you to the Airport Vista Parking Lot where you can park for $3, cross the road and gaze out to incredible views from the Airport Scenic Overlook.

Susan doesn’t hike but I do, so she sat at the lookout while I crossed back to the parking lot and found what I thought was the beginning of the Airport Loop Trail. I viewed a map but couldn’t determine how long the hike would be. I was wearing new hiking shoes with a good grip, my sun hat, jeans, a T-shirt, and light jacket. I had my phone and some cough drops but not much else. It was 11 a.m., and the temperature was in the 60s with a high expected in the low 70s. I’m used to walking 4 to 5 miles each day and, in my excitement to walk on the red earth and see the Sedona I came for, I foolishly took off without any water or knowledge of the trail.

The day and scenery couldn’t have been more beautiful. At first, I passed a lot of people going the opposite way, and a very nice woman asked if I wanted my picture taken, so I posed.

The trail began along the road, and as soon as it veered off I saw incredible red rock formations but realized I had to also watch the path since it was so rocky. I knew I couldn’t capture this kind of beauty in a photograph, but I kept stopping to shoot pictures anyway. The vistas were breathtaking.

I called Susan to let her know I didn’t see any markers and did not know how long I would be. When I got to what I suspected to be the halfway point, there were markers. I stopped and rested, gazing at the incredible mound of red earth and formations before me. Many fellow hikers were doing the same thing.

One marker indicated .6 mile to the end, so I called Susan again to let her know, that given the terrain, I expected to be back in an hour or so. It was noon.

As I journeyed on, the trail seemed to get rougher and more precarious in a number of places where the edge narrowed. There were slanted, slippery-looking rocks that I had to cross so I slowed down on those and carefully moved on.

I met many trailblazers. There were parents with children, and people with dogs on leashes. I was often asked how I (a 76-year-old) was doing. I felt cared for by my fellow nature lovers. At various points, I’d ask people if they knew how much farther the trail went but no one did. Maybe we were all lost? And I kept thinking, “How on earth could I start out without water and not knowing how long this would take?" Then, I met the nicest woman with her husband and two boys. They offered me food and water. I accepted the water, and the woman said they’d be behind me. Somehow, I lost them, but in between calls to Susan I’d stop to look at the cacti and take short breaks under small trees that offered a little shade, where I’d drink a few sips of my precious water.

At one point, I was a little worried that I might be lost, but then I crossed paths with a woman who told me to look for a wire fence that led to the end and that it wasn’t far. I came close to two female deer and a very large buck. I’m used to deer and knew they’d run away from me, which they did. After that, I saw a slight fork in the road and came upon the wire fence. Soon, I heard people talking and saw houses on the other side of the fence. There was no marker, but I noticed a small gravel path that led up to a road. I followed it and found myself near the Airport Scenic Overlook, right across the street from Susan, who was waiting in her car. It was 1 p.m.

After gratefully rejoining my friend, and sitting for a few minutes and drinking more water, I visited a convenient porta-potty in the parking lot. On the way, I ran into the wonderful woman who had offered me food and water. We hugged as she exclaimed, “You made it!” There were so many guardian angels on the trail that day, all seeming to watch out for each other.

I know some people venture out on the Airport Loop Trail to see the sunset. If you do, be prepared with flashlights, good directions, warm clothes, good shoes, food, and water. Rattlesnakes don’t come out until the end of April, and I didn’t see any lizards or jack rabbits, but make sure you’re well equipped.

Since my adventure, I’ve researched the trail. I have found varying lengths, but I think it was about 4 miles, including that .6 mile which is the back end of the loop. I’ll never forget this experience. I was never scared—it’s too beautiful and demanding for that--though I am sorry to have alarmed my friend. If you visit, take in as much of the magnificence as you can, but don’t forget to pack along some water!

After my adventure, we headed to the Indian Gardens in Oak Creek, a lovely neighborhood away from the center of Sedona. It has a very pleasant outdoor patio, and the lunch menu offers sandwiches, salads, and other typical cafe fare. We shared a vegetarian sandwich and salad. The food was good and the prices reasonable. After, we visited the shop next door, Garland’s Indian Jewelry, where we browsed a wealth of beautifully crafted Native American baskets, jewelry, leather goods, vases, Kachinas, and etc.

Arizona Safari Jeep Tours

We scheduled a jeep tour at 5 p.m. Though the Sedona Pink Jeep tours were sold out, we found a tour with Arizona Safari Jeep Tours. All their tours have ratings, like rugged, easy, etc., so we booked appropriately. Our tour from 5 to7 p.m. gave us a chance to see the color changes that come to the canyon at sunset.

Our tour guide took us into Boynton Canyon. He explained how the red rock and earth of Sedona comes from the rust, or iron oxide, that formed from over 300 million years of volcanic eruptions and weathering of the elements. There is a high amount of iron oxide in the Sedona soil, which produces the red color. When combined with large deposits of quartz, this creates an enormous amount of magnetic energy in the area, and many people believe that this kind of energy is centered in the vortexes. Our guide stopped the jeep and used metal rods that bent down when they were hovering above an iron oxide and quartz rock, demonstrating the magnetic pull. It was fun and, as the sun began to set, we saw the red hills change to a beautiful golden hue.

Dinner in Sedona

Saltrock Southwest Kitchen

After our jeep tour, we headed to dinner at Saltrock Southwest Kitchen at the Amara Resort & Spa. It’s upscale, but people dress casually. We sat outside, hoping for a clear evening to look up at the stars. But it was chilly. The accommodating staff brought us a heat lamp and warm blankets to wrap up in. There were no stars, but the excellent food included Blue Crab Empanadas, a Tiger Shrimp Tamal, and a fantastic Poblano Relleno. Again, sharing made the price for such good food and service quite reasonable. Try to eat here during the day when you’ll enjoy a fantastic view.

Day 3

Jerome, Arizona

We left Sedona the next day and headed to nearby Jerome. Once a booming copper-mining town, its population now is about 450, and it’s sometimes referred to as a ghost town. The sky here is glorious; it is right up there with the best sky I ever saw in New Mexico. Streets wind around on hills filled with shops that remind me of the hippie days. Parking is difficult, so we wound up heading back to Tucson for lunch.

Nicknamed the hut” by locals, this modest spot serves fresh local fish prepared to order. Fish and chips and ground ahi burgers are popular, and prices are fair. Get in line, order at the counter inside, pick up at the window outside, and select a seat at an ocean-view picnic table. Or take it to go for a picnic on the beach.

But be careful here with parking. Some free parking is provided, but on the east side there is a marked private lot that requires payment. Also, on the street in front, signs greatly restrict parking. Be sure to read them carefully. Recently, I was so excited to find an empty spot within easy reach of the cafe that I failed to check the signage. That short-lived joy cost me $63.

The menu at Urth Santa Monica features local, seasonal, and organic fare. Place your order at the counter, then select from one of many tables both inside and out. Breakfast is a popular time because of the great selection of delicious pastries, but lunch brings on a large variety of sandwiches--including The “New Yorker” Sandwich, which is a tasty classic Reuben with Russian dressing on marble bread. Pizzas and salads and plenty more options round it out. Among the desserts are an acclaimed pecan sticky bun and personal-size pecan pie, but don’t miss the delicious and light berries-and-cream cake. Acclaimed drinks include the Spanish latte and Japanese green tea latte, but I favor the smoothies.

All this and it’s popular with celebs, too! Though I saw somebody here (I’m just not sure who!), at the Beverly Hills branch I once saw Reese Witherspoon with her halo of blonde, blonde hair setting up shop with her young children. Keep your eyes peeled.

Shops and more restaurants are sprinkled along Main Street, and the Community Garden can be seen across the street at #2224.

The baked goods are particularly good due to the 48-hour fermentation process the kitchen uses. Patrons line up at the pastry case to select from the array of exquisite pan dulces (Mexican sweet breads). A house specialty is the hefty and deliciously over-stuffed tequila-almond croissant, which is also now my own favorite, and the conchas have the reputation for being the best ever. Someday I hope to actually have room to try the jalapeño croissant. A few egg items are also available. I am definitely also addicted to the superb, thick Mexican hot chocolate, though I favor ordering the “dirty” version that includes a shot of espresso. And I do like a glass of fresh OJ (for some wonderful reason, fresh OJ in San Antonio is usually actually fresh-squeezed OJ).

Serving Sephardic Jewish cuisine--an old traditional style of Mediterranean fare--in a rustic contemporary setting, this unusual restaurant is a delightful surprise.

Cocktails are interesting. I drank Persephone’s Kiss, a tasty mix of tequila, pomegranate, salgam, and mint. Others in my group ordered the unusual house raki service based on a strong, anise-flavored liqueur, and the sophisticated wine list has representation from Oregon to Israel.

Mezza plates are exceptional and include a large variety of vegetarian dishes as well as some meat-based dishes. A plate of substantial, very large pita breads are included. Hummus with a topping of roasted cauliflower, capers, and pickled lemon is a personal favorite, along with unphotogenic but spectacular leeks in olive oil with kohlrabi greens (so good I laughed with the waitress that she should take the plate away before I ate that, too). A plate of spicy Feta cheese, another of fried eggplant, and some beets with za’atar and crispy rice satisfied my party of four. However, we opted for additional plates of shishbarak (beef and lamb dumplings) and fish koftqa with white beans and chermoula.

A favorite dessert is pistachilo-topped knafeh (order early as it takes 30 minutes to prepare), but our new bestie is krembo, which with its marshmallow top looks like a crème brulelle, but which is layered inside with a dreamy, creamy dark chocolate namelaka, sour cherries, and hazelnuts.

This Texas Indian restaurant chain provides some delicious renditions of Indian favorites and takes pride in operating green. At Tarka Indian Kitchen, chicken is hormone free and lamb is grass fed and halal. And in addition to offering the expected meat dishes, the menu makes it possible to put together a very satisfying vegetarian meal. For that, begin with vegetable samosas, add a few curries--perhaps malai kofta dumplings, channa masala garbanzos, or aloo gobi cauliflower and potatoes. An order of garlic naan or roti will round things out, and a mango or strawberry lassi drink can pass as dessert.

Grants Pass is headquarters for the popular jet boat rides along the Rogue River. Jet boats have flat bottoms and no rudder or propeller, allowing for a smooth and safe, yet fast and exciting, ride through the sometimes shallow water. In addition to being extreme fun, jetting down the Rogue River in one allows you to observe some of the area's plentiful wildlife. On my family's ride, the driver slowed to point out ospreys, great blue herons, and deer. We also saw fishermen netting huge steelhead.

Trips vary in duration, and some include a meal. The four- hour dinner excursion boat ventures into the spectacular Hellgate Canyon and then turns around and docks for dinner at the OK Corral ranch. You’ll have the choice of walking up to the dining room or of riding in a tractor-pulled cart. There, sheltered in a covered dining room with window portals open to the outside, you’ll be seated at a table with several other families and served a bountiful home-cooked meal.

It is convenient to stay the night in town, especially so at the Riverside Inn where the boats dock.

First, a little history. Movie star Clark Gable vacationed regularly here in his favorite fishing lodge, and he also holed up here for two weeks and mourned intensely when actress Carole Lombard, his third wife and the love of his life, perished in a plane crash in 1942. During that time he didn’t want to see anyone, and so food and drink were left outside his room. Eventually, he exited to face his obligations and, at age 41, to enlist in the Army Air Corps and volunteer for combat duty (he earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for bombing missions in Germany).

When you see the rustic beauty of this old-fashioned lodge, you’ll recognize that it could easily hold healing powers. And, at the very least, it will work some temporary magic on both the nerves of road warriors who spend the night here, resting away from the highway battles of Interstate 5, and on the general psyche of anyone coming here to recuperate from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

Though it obviously has always been a comfortable spot to kick back, this circa 1924 log cabin lodge is not as “rustic” as it once was. It has been carefully restored from ruin, with five lodge rooms--including Gable’s vaulted ceiling room (#4)--and four riverfront cabins holding nine guest rooms. All have been completely rebuilt and updated, and each has a private deck or balcony with a river view. Some of the suites have a two-story-high ceiling crossed with massive log beams, a river-rock fireplace with a split log mantle, and an oversize whirlpool bathtub. Throughout, the cozy decor consists of expanses of beautifully patinaed wood floors, primitive landscape paintings, handmade quilts, and comfortable furniture reflecting the inn’s heyday era. Forest views are seen from every window. When rebuilding, pains were taken not to disturb the trees and gardens and vast expanses of manicured lawns. And indeed, the whole property looks like it has been here for a long, long time.

One of the most popular activities is fishing. Famous anglers in the past include Gable as well as crooner Bing Crosby, Western writer Zane Grey, and President Herbert Hoover. Since the inn is situated beside what is reputed to be the best fishing hole on the Rogue River, you might want to pack along your favorite pole. Or you can borrow one from the front desk. The inn provides a barbecue so you can cook up your fresh catch for dinner.

The evening wine and cheese reception is a good time to relax beside the enormous river-rock fireplace in the lodge’s inviting Great Room and soak up the days-gone-by atmosphere. On weekends, guests can opt for a do-it-yourself evening barbecue on the lodge’s deck. A complimentary buffet breakfast is laid out in the lodge’s distinctive Rainbow Room dining area. Should you prefer, it can be delivered right to your room. Either way, you’ll leave this roadside haven refreshed and ready for whatever comes at you.

Hidden inside a nondescript building in an unremarkable little mall, Dashi Sichuan Kitchen+ Bar is a lovely surprise. Diners pull open the ornate door handles and enter another world. A dark, high-ceilinged interior room is offset by brightly colorful accents, conveying a touch of mystery.

Delicious Sichuan Chinese cuisine is on the menu. Cocktails include a classic lime daiquiri as well as several sakes and plenty of beers. Exceptional dishes include the Signature Spicy Cumin Lamb Lollipops, which are especially popular, as are the superb green beans and XL shrimp. With the exception of Spicy Garlic Eggplant, dishes tend to be dry rather than saucy, and most are smothered in fiery red peppers. Child diners have been known to play a bit with their food. One I dined with designed a unique dish of curly-hair noodles surrounding a dumpling face.

Aurora is the first organized Christian communal society established west of the Mississippi. The 400 original colony members arrived via the Oregon Trail in 1855. Sharing property and labor with one another, they flourished here from 1856 through the mid-1880s. The community became known for simple living and for accumulating a minimum of material things, and it produced fine musicians, craftsmen, and scholars. Though the colony disbanded in the 1880s, many descendants continue to live here.

Aurora opened its first antique store in 1959. The town was designated Oregon’s first National Historic District in 1974. Now, with more than 200 antique dealers, it claims to be Oregon’s antique capital. What I like best about antiqueing here--besides the generally good prices made even better by Oregon’s policy of charging no sales tax--is that many of the shops operate within restored historic buildings. But be cautious. On my last visit I purchased an item that I later found in Portland for half the price!

Old Aurora Colony Museum

Five buildings display a collection of kitchen utensils, farm implements, and other artifacts once used in the daily lives of colony members. Informal guided tours begin with a slide show telling how the mostly German colonists settled first in Pennsylvania, then in Missouri, then here. The tour also includes the restored 1870s Steinbach Log Cabin and Kraus House. Browsing the exhibits, we saw some unusual musical instruments--most of which still work--and an elaborate music box sent back to the town by Henry Theophilus Fink, who was the first Oregon student to graduate from Harvard (the whole town helped him with expenses) and who worked at the New York Post as a music critic from 1881 to 1924. As a Bay Area resident, I found it interesting to learn that the town once operated a busy hotel serving travelers on the road between San Francisco and British Columbia.

Yet its preserved, natural setting surprises first-time visitors. Several health-related complexes, a few shops, and an AirBNB also operate here.

Located in this woodsy spot, this unusual cafe has spacious indoor and outdoor patio seating. It is operated by individuals in the SerenityStar sobriety recovery program. Your tab is by donation and yours to determine. The suggestion is $15+ per plate, which we followed, adding also a generous tip. The extensive brunch menu includes pancakes, omelettes, bennies (eggs Benedicts), and scramblers as well as salads and sandwiches. Servings are generous. Specialty coffees and desserts are also available at a separate counter. It’s cash only here, an ATM is available, and 100 per cents of proceeds go to helping recovering addicts. My family group left stuffed and happy.

t is difficult to say what is the best thing about this simple Mexican spot. The spectacular park-like area it is located within--Los Patios--or the atmospheric Naco restaurant itself, with its exceptional Mexican fare. Plenty of seating is available indoors, where large windows let in abundant light and a tree grows right through the dining room ceiling, and even more seating is awaits outdoors on an expansive deck surround by shade-providing trees. Salado Creek runs alongside the deck, which is the place to be in good weather, and grassy areas invite children to romp freely.

And then there is the food. Using fresh organic and locally sourced ingredients when possible, Nico 210 is popular for its stellar oversize tacos made with flour tortillas. My favorite is the popular Diablo version, stuffed with large grilled shrimp and avocado. The menu offers plenty more, including chilaquiles, tortas, and enchiladas, as well as a few items with unusual ingredients like squash blossoms and huitlacoche (a fungus that grows on corn and is considered a delicacy in Mexico). A special brunch menu additionally offers breakfast tacos as well as huevos rancheros and several omelets and Benedicts.

Situated on 10 acres that were once a movie studio and set, this peaceful facility was created by Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda in 1950 and is open to all denominations. I found it the perfect place to escape the outside bustle, and so did Elvis Presley and many others too numerous to mention. Visitors to the private Lake Shrine gardens come to enjoy the beauty of the manicured grounds that include flowers and lush greenery, statues, fountains, waterfalls, and a spring-fed lake populated with koi and swans. A flat, unpaved pathway leads around the lake. A “wall-less temple” memorial to Mahatma Gandhi holds a portion of his ashes, attracting people from around the world who come to pay their respects. A reproduction 16th-century Dutch windmill serving as a chapel offers a peaceful indoor space for meditation and prayer where visitors can rest and reflect; services are scheduled. Volunteers answer questions at the Visitor Center, where books and media on the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda are available. Additionally, a Gift Shop offers devotional and gift items imported from India, and an adjacent small Museum displays personal artifacts of Yogananda.

Lake Shrine Temple

The hilltop Lake Shrine Temple on the upper level offers sanctuary for meditation and Sunday devotional services, when visitors can use the Temple Gate at 17080 West Sunset Boulevard.

Several flights of stairs connect the two levels. An overnight retreat facility is available.

No other city in the U.S. observes this Mexican holiday quite like San Antonio. Observed annually here at the end of October, the traditional Day of the Dead Mexican holiday celebrating deceased loved ones dates back to pre-Columbian times. Here, the Dia de los Muertos celebration honoring the dead is over the top. Gifts to the deceased associated with the holiday are prevalent throughout the city, including marigolds, incense, and candles. Also found in various places, including Pearl, are elaborate altars honoring those who have passed--created new each year by local artists--plus festivities including live music, face-painting, and Mexican cuisine.

Many events are free, including the biggest event, La Villita, which is set right off the River Walk. It features the largest open-air community altar exhibition in the city, to which people can contribute photos for display. This event includes traditional mariachi musicians, Folklorico dancers, and a parade featuring puppets and stilt-walkers. New in 2019, a Day of the Dead River Parade featured a colorful parade of catrinas on the river.

7 best COVID-19 travel tips

I have personally tested these tips. Recently, due to the death of my mother, I had to take two long car trips during the pandemic. The trips were far from fun as I was dealing with my emotions about my mom as well as my fears and concerns about COVID-19. And then, since the trips were from one end of California to the other, there was also the smoke and fires.

1. Pack along a kit containing disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and snacks that you can rely on when you are hungry and having trouble finding an open spot to purchase food.

2. Also pack plastic sandwich bags in your kit. Use them to contain various items, including your mask when you take it off (folded inside in) and perhaps items found while beachcombing.

3. Finding restrooms can be a problem. Many formerly reliable options are now closed. When driving, plan to stop at rest stops, where restrooms are usually open but not always clean, or at a Chevron gas station, which reliably offers clean restrooms. (Note that I just experienced a Chevron station in Livermore, California, that has closed its restrooms.) Remember not to use the hand-dryer blowers because they move air around in a way that isn't advised.

4. If staying in a hotel, check ahead regarding safety protocols. Best are those that keep rooms empty for 24 to 72 hours between guests. Use some of those disinfectant wipes to wipe down light switches, door knobs, and TV remotes (see #6 below). Open windows when possible to promote air circulation, and air out your guest room for a few hours. Better yet, since all guest rooms do not have windows that open, book a room with a balcony or terrace.

5. If staying in the same room more than one day, request that your room not to be cleaned on the second and third days and that no staff person enters the room on those days. You can request extra towels and amenities at the desk when you return for the night. Always wash your hands as soon as you re-enter your room.

6. Use a plastic sandwich bag to cover a hotel’s often germy TV channel changer. Note that I had to pry the remote out of my forgetful husband’s hand to accomplish this, followed by a round of hand sanitizer.

7. Pack along your own pillows. Doing this made me feel more secure since I smother my face in them.

In 2001 the parent company of the Allegretto resort in Paso Robles started a chain of hotels in Southern California. Manhattan Beach opened as one of their finest in 2004. Currently there are 24 hotels in the chain, with the Carlsbad location being their newest. Decors vary, as do prices which are reasonable and competitive.

I stayed at the exceptional flagship Allegretto Vineyard Resort a few years ago. And on a recent trip to Southern California brought on by a family crisis, I had the pleasure of staying in two other Ayres Hotels. The hotels had covid procedures in place such as mandatory mask-wearing and only one party at a time in elevators. I felt as safe in these hotels as is possible in these trying times.

Located inland about 10 to 15 minutes from the Carlsbad beaches, in an area with business parks and tracts of new housing, this is the newest cog in the Ayres chain. Rooms here are oversize, with a choice of two queens or a king plus a hide-a-bed couch. The contemporary decor is simple and efficient, with triple sheeted beds incorporating a light comforter cover. Attractive art is incorporated throughout. Off the lobby in the morning, a breakfast box is prepared to order and includes toast or bagel, yogurt, and fresh fruit. It can be eaten outside on an attractive patio in good weather, or taken back to your room, which is what we did.

2020 pandemic update: When I entered the guest room, I did not smell bleach and forgot to use my own wipes. This was my first hotel stay during covid. I was understandably jumpy. When I asked the front desk about whether there was an air filtration system, the clerk did not know. As in many hotels, windows opened only a few inches and with great difficulty. My intent was to air out the room. Instead, we decided to leave on our masks for an hour. I expected a reassuring note in the room regarding the excellent sanitation efforts that the hotel does use but did not find one, so do remember to print out the covid cleaning procedures at Ayres Hotels from their website in advance. My fears lightened up as I went along, but erring on the side of caution I recommend that you wipe down all surfaces in any hotel room before you settle in.

Squeezed up against the freeway like the Little House in the children’s story book, this was one of the original cogs in what has become the Ayres chain. Built in 2004, it was the model for the luxury Allegretto resort in Paso Robles, which was built about 5 years ago. Inside, this hotel features the fine art, antiques, and castle-like finishes of the Allegretto and is truly an unexpected gem. Beds are triple sheeted, and the marble bathrooms have granite sink tops. I felt a bit like a queen while recovering here from intense driving fatigue.

ONE NIGHT IN TOKYO: SHINJUKU

The vibrant Shinjuku area of Tokyo is filled with attractions, and though it was cancelled due to the pandemic the 2020 Olympics were scheduled to be here. The area is also a popular choice because it is centered around a busy Bullet Train station. I checked into a hotel for just one night, and I definitely absorbed the energetic flavor of the area and managed to see quite a bit.

Shinjuku Washington Hotel

3-2-9, Nishi-shinjuku, 03-3343-3111. Well located, this bustling hotel is just a short walk from the famous Shinjuku section of town. Though it had the smallest room I encountered during my visit to Japan, it manages to include a deep furo soaking tub in each teeny, tiny bathroom . . . and the price is right. I enjoyed meeting the robot valet that hangs out in the lobby in between room service runs, and many small shops operate on the floors below the lobby. During my visit to Japan, I stayed at many sister properties, and all of them provided a white cotton nightgown that buttons down the front--something I started looking forward to each night. And here, a buffet breakfast was served on a high floor permitting lovely area views.

Across the street sits lovely Shinjuku Central Park as well as some of Tokyo’s tallest skyscrapers. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office building No.1, which is the tallest city hall in the world, offers free observation decks.

Park Hyatt Tokyo

Occupies 39th-52nd floors. Celebrated for being designed by famous architect Kenzo Tange, this skyscraper might be even more famous for its supporting role in the movie Lost in Translation. Even if you don’t stay here, you’ll want to stop in for a drink at the New York Bar on the 52nd floor. Its cool 65-foot-long, four-lane indoor pool--where Bill Murray took a dip in the movie--has floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji, and a glass pyramid-shaped ceiling allows in natural light.

The walk from the hotel to the train station passes an intriguing collection of shops and restaurants. Along the way, the back alley streets are highly interesting. Known as Golden Gai, these narrow streets are lined with small bars with just a few seats. Some are at ground level, while others are positioned up steep staircases, and many are open only to locals. It is on one of these streets that my companion and I found a big bank of vending machines, and the equivalent of US$2 popped out a darling miniature vinyl dog that looked just like her own at home making it the perfect souvenir.

Takashimaya Department Store

Located in the Times Square area adjacent to the train station, this is considered to be the area’s best department store. Exhibitions and Japanese goods are on floor 11, while a food hall occupies the entire basement and restaurants occupy the top three floors (12-14) referred to as Restaurants Park. After zipping through several of the shopping floors, I headed to the basement and zeroed in on a scrumptious almond croissant from Maison Kayser to take back to my room for dinner. My drink was a bottle of the hotel’s Mt. Fuji spring water.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

Near the train station. Tu-Sun 9am-4pm; closed M. 500 yen. Stretched over 144 acres, this former imperial garden became a national garden after World War II. The park holds native and traditional gardens as well as French Formal and English Landscape gardens, plus a spectacular Taiwan Pavilion that perches beside a serene pond.

Yayoi Kusama Museum

Thur-M. 1,100 yen. Located off the beaten path in a suburban district of Shinjuku, this slim 5-story white building is devoted to displaying the larger-than-life and avant-garde works of artist Yayoi Kusama. Installations include her newish "infinity room" series (an Instagram sensation), polka-dot paintings, and sculptures. Note that visitors are limited to only 200 per day.

cat cafes

In Japan living space is at a premium and most landlords do not permit pets, so cat cafes are a popular and ingenious solution. Patrons pay an hourly fee (usually about US$10 per hour) for a cup of coffee or tea to enjoy amid free-roaming cats.

Located in the center of Shinjuku, the Calico Cat Cafe opened in 2007 and has about 20 cats representing 17 breeds. Rules include not waking a sleeping cat and not bringing catnip in to the cafe.

Note that the first cat cafe in the U.S. opened in Oakland, California in 2014.
Like most U.S. cat cafes, Cat Town adopts out the cats.

Built in 1969, this is Nikka Whisky’s second distillery. Masataka Taketsuru, who learned whisky-making in Scotland, started the company and makes what has been called the father of whiskey--Nikka Whisky. The Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo distillery is located in a foggy glen surrounded by mountains and is adjacent to two rivers, including its famous source of pristine water, the Nikkawa River. Both malt and grain whisky are produced here. An educational tour of the refinery includes strolling the lovely grounds and viewing a scenic pond with swans. As an overview of production is presented, tour groups enter several buildings, including the kiln tower, mash house, and still house.

The hour-long tour concludes with a tasting, where whisky descriptions vary from “fruity and rich” for the Single malt Miyagikyo to “woody and mellow” for the Coffey Grain. I liked them all. The tour is conducted in Japanese, but audio guides in English, Chinese, and Korean are available.
