Honda Cars
India's President and CEO, Katsushi Inoune, has confirmed the company's
plans of launching the BR-V compact SUV to India sometime in 2016. The
concept of the car had made its debut in August, 2015, and we expect it to make its India debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.
Based on the extended Brio platform, the Honda BR-V seems to have taken some of its design cues from the Mobilio
MPV. Though features such as improved ground clearance, black plastic
cladding around body, roof rails and 16-inch alloy wheels render it a
compact SUV look.

Honda BR-V

Powering the Honda BR-V could be the same 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and
1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel powertrains that do duty on some of Honda's
existing cars including the City. Transmission options on offer could be a 5-speed manual gearbox and a CVT automatic.
Production of Honda's 7-seater SUV is likely to commence from early
next year at Honda's Tapukara plant, where the company has been already
manufacturing the City and Amaze. Upon its launch, the Honda BR-V will
compete against Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.

We look at how the new Baleno hatchback compares to the Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz in terms of specifications.

Oct 26, 2015

Maruti’s second premium product, the Baleno hatchback has been
launched at a very aggressive price. Now although the Baleno does hold
promise, it steps into the premium hatchback segment which is dominated
by the Hyundai i20, and the heat has been dialed up more recently thanks
to the new Honda Jazz. Here’s how Maruti’s big hatchback stacks up
against the i20 and the Jazz.
Engines

The petrol variants of all three cars use 1.2-litre engines, and though
difference in power figures may not be a lot, the Baleno makes a bit
more power than the i20 but around 5bhp less than the Jazz. The Baleno
and the i20 have similar torque figures, while the Jazz’ torque output
is a hairline less.

Petrol Engines

Maruti Baleno

Honda Jazz

Hyundai i20

Displacement

1197cc

1199 cc

1197cc

Power

83.1bhp

88.5bhp

81.9bhp

Torque

11.7kgm

11.2kgm

11.7kgm

When it comes to the oil burners, the Baleno has the smallest and least
powerful engine of the trio followed by the i20. The Honda Jazz has a
power advantage here as well, by almost 10bhp. The i20 has the highest
torque output of the trio followed by the Jazz and then the Baleno.

Diesel Engines

Maruti Baleno

Honda Jazz

Hyundai i20

Displacement

1248cc

1498 cc

1396cc

Power

73.9bhp

98.6bhp

88.8bhp

Torque

19.3kgm

20.4kgm

22.4kgm

For buyers looking at automatic variants, there's only the Jazz and the
Baleno to pick from. The Jazz petrol has a CVT option, and the Baleno
petrol will be coming with one too.

Dimensions

Although just by a narrow margin, it is the Baleno which is the longest
and widest of the lot. Owing to its mini-MPV like shape, the Jazz is
the tallest, while the i20 has the longest wheelbase. Both the i20 and
the Jazz boast spacious cabins, and looking at the numbers, one could
expect the same of the Baleno too.

Dimensions

Maruti Baleno

Honda Jazz

Hyundai i20

Length

3995mm

3955 mm

3985mm

Width

1745mm

1694mm

1734mm

Height

1500mm

1544 mm

1505mm

Wheelbase

2520mm

2530mm

2570mm

Ground Clearance

170mm

165mm

170mm

On the equipment front, Maruti hasn’t officially released details on
its Baleno. But the car arriving in India will get daytime running LED
headlamps, Maruti’s 7-inch touchscreen enabled SmartPlay infotainment
system and 16-inch alloy wheels, at least on its top trim. Looking at
the current trend at Maruti, all variants of the Maruti Baleno can be
expected with at least a driver airbag as standard. Maruti is yet to
confirm any such claims though.

The Jazz Honda Jazz gets a 5-inch touchscreen interface for its music
system, with the addition of 15-inch alloy wheels. It misses out on the
LED inserts on the headlamps. What the Jazz does get is ABS with EBD
as standard on all variants(except on the base petrol variant). Top two
trims get dual front airbags.

The i20’s top-spec cabin comes with a 7-inch touchscreen equipped
infotainment system. Its exteriors sport 16-inch alloy wheels. The i20
gets ABS and airbags on its higher variants, but does not get EBD.

Pricing

Though they are only introductory, Maruti has managed to undercut its
two main rivals the Hyundai i20 and Honda Jazz in just about every
variant. The petrol range goes from Rs 4.99-7.01 lakh with the CVT
variant costing Rs 6.76 lakh, while the diesel range is priced at Rs
6.16-8.11 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi), which in true Maruti
fashion, is great value when you factor all that the Baleno packs in.

Maruti Baleno vs rivals prices (ex-showroom, Delhi)

Hyundai
is offering upto Rs 28,000 off on the Xcent in their Monsoon Splash
Offer. The offer is valid till the end of July. Hyundai hopes to get a
quick lead in the market with this offer and increase sales of the Xcent

segment. One of the most feature loaded car in the compact sedan
segment, the life of Xcent will be tough with Figo Aspire also coming
next month.

Overview

Hyundai India is once again in the news now for launching one of its successful sedan series, Xcent

its Base and S variants with some advanced aspects. Now, the anti lock

Also, the top end variants include dual front airbags and rear parking
camera with display attached to the rear view mirror. Apart from these,
no other changes have been made to the equipment list in its remaining
trims. This five seater vehicle accommodates the votes of the majority
of audience for its superior picture perfect product. This model is
offered in petrol as well as diesel versions to choose from. It retains
the standard factors that it is known for, and also manages to impress
with added utility features that are not usually seen in this segment.
The exterior is dressed up with a lot of chrome, while the noticeable
aspects enhances its overall appearance. It comes with a stylish set of
alloy as well as steel wheels depending on the variants. The diesel
trims are decked with a second generation 1.1-litre CRDi engine that
displaces 1120cc. The petrol trims are integrated with a 1.2-litre Kappa
Dual VTVT engine that is based on a DOHC valve configuration. It is
offered with both automatic and manual transmission gearbox options to

ride, looks good and is a proper brit muscle. This attempt of the
company to redefine practicality has payed off by launching its next
generation vehicle now with a better face and more ‘race effects’. The
mid range and top end variants have a 4-speed automatic transmission
gear box adds to the ‘X-factor. Want a performance oriented vehicle with
a bit of style? Then this car is a decent alternative to the other
offerings. An expensive but fine machine and convenient for city
errands. Hey, extra features costs money. Need we say more for what to
pick, while the mileage too stands in support by squeezing a 24.4 kmpl
from diesel and 19.1 kmpl from petrol.

Exteriors

The very first look at this well built sedan will succeed in leaving
an imprint on the heart of the car lovers. The front fascia has a wide
windshield which are fixed with a pair of wipers. Integrated with high
intensity head lamps, the headlight cluster steals all the appreciation

chrome finishing. The external mirrors are decked with side turn
indicators as well. As a safety function, a side molding is provided
too. A unique tail light cluster enhances the look of the car from the
rear view altogether. A chrome furnished strip with Hyundai written on
it is attached to the boot lid.

Exterior Measurements:
With an overall length of 3995mm and a width of 1660mm, it stands at a
height of 1520mm. A long wheelbase of 2425mm is capable of giving a
spacious leg room inside. The front track has a width of 1479mm while
the rear track sits at a measure of 1493mm.

Interiors

Ed’s take : The
interiors of the XCent are modern and do feel the next generation of the
currently sold cars, though picked up from the Grand i10. The
instrument panel is based on the same other Hyundai vehicles. The space
offered for even the second row passengers is sufficient, and better
than most of the other vehicles in this segment. The boot on the XCent
is the largest in its segment.
Its interiors have been given a precise detailing which cannot fail
to impress even if unnoticed. There is a multi functional steering that
has an integrated audio control as well as a Bluetooth connectivity. An
advanced 2-DIN music player with USB support and an Aux-in port along
with CD and MP3 player is additionally teamed with a radio tuner. Then
there are electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors on both
sides, whose switches are handy and fitted on the driver door arm rest. A
push start/stop button is offered, which adds to the utility value.
There is also a cooling glove box unit. The passenger convenience is
increase by providing adjustable head restraints to the rear seats. The
driver side power window with auto down function is at. An electric
power steering system is offered that makes the driving job way too
simpler and easier. The passenger side sun visor is offered with a
vanity mirror. The driver seat height adjuster gives an improved
flexibility in making the seat arrangements as per the personal
preference.
Interior Comfort:
The occupants are pampered by comforts like adjustable rear seat head
rests that offer a better seating position. A back pocket to the front
seat can be stuffed with handy and important things. Then there is a
rear seat center armrest that supports a cup holder to it. The storage
capacity is further increased by providing front and rear door map
pockets. The lighting in the cabin has been addressed by offering front
and rear room lamps and additionally blue interior illumination.

Interior Measurements:
This compact sedan has a boot space of 407 litres. It has a fuel tank
capacity of 43 litres. This cabin has a decent leg and shoulder space
that makes it comfortable for all the occupants.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

The five speed manual transmission gear box is coupled with second
generation 1.1-litre engine in the diesel version. Along with a
potential of reaching a whopping 160 kmph, this vehicle can cross the
speed limit of 100 kmph effortlessly in about 16 to 17 seconds. Whereas
the petrol engine based variants accelerate to 100 kmph mark in almost
16 seconds and can attain a maximum speed of 145 to 155 kmph without
much hassle.

Engine and Performance

Ed’s take : The performance of both the engines is good and one can potter around even when lugged into a higher gear.
The petrol version is equipped with 1.2 litre, Kappa dual variable
timing valve train engine which displaces 1197cc. It has a capacity to
produce a maximum power of 81.86bhp at 6000rpm. It generates a maximum
torque of 113.75Nm at 4000rpm. This motor is offered with both five
speed manual as well as 4-speed automatic transmission gear box options
to select from. The diesel variants are equipped by a 1.1 litre engine
that is integrated with a common rail direct injection fuel supply
system. It comes with a displacement capacity of 1120cc. The maximum
power generated by this engine is 71.01bhp at 4000rpm and a peak torque
of 180.4Nm at 1750 to 2500rpm. Under standard conditions, it gives a
decent mileage of around 24.4kmpl.

Mileage

Ed’s take :- The petrol engine on the XCent is
the tried and tested and it returns a good figure of 12km/l under normal
driving conditions. This is the same engine that powered the previous
generation i10. The diesel is definitely more fuel efficient as it
returns in excess of 15km/l even in city driving.
Offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, this variant is based on DOHC
valve configuration that is integrated with multi point fuel injection
system. The manual trims generate a mileage of approximately 19.1 Kmpl,
while the automatic version produces a fuel economy of 16.9 kmpl.
Whereas, the diesel version is equipped with second generation CRDI
engine that is capable of delivering an impressive mileage of 24.4 kmpl.

Power of Hyundai Xcent

The 1.2-litre Kappa dual VTVT petrol engine has the potential to
generate a maximum power of 81.86bhp at 6000rpm. It produces an
impressive torque output of 113.75Nm at 4000rpm. The diesel trim is also
great in producing a maximum power of 71.01bhp at 4000rpm and a maximum
torque output of 180.4Nm at 1750 to 2500rpm.

Stereo & Accessories

Ed’s take : The XCent comes loaded with inbuilt
music system, keyless entry, push start and stop, Bluetooth
connectivity. Electrically folding ORVMs, aux and USB input, steering
mounted controls. The list just goes on.
The 2 DIN music system is inclusive of all the necessary
entertainment functions such as a CD/MP3 player, an Aux-in socket, a USB
port and a radio tuner as well. It has a Bluetooth connectivity that
allows for audio streaming. The steering wheel has got Bluetooth call
connectivity as well as audio controls are also provided. Furthermore,
the users if and when want to customize their vehicle with additional
features, like a leather upholstery to the seats, integrating the
dashboard with wooden accents, cigarette lighter and ashtray, foot mats,
exterior decals, various alloy wheels, mobile holders, sun blinds for
the windows and the windscreen. All these and many more such added stuff
to make their car look trendy or according to their taste.

You can now buy Hyundai Xcent accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Ed’s take : The handling of the XCent is good
for what purpose it has been built. There is a good amount of body roll,
but it hasn’t been designed to be driven fast around a track and even
on winding roads at speeds in three digits. The rear suspension on the
XCent is softer for better ride quality for those who are chauffeur
driven.
The efficiency of an automobile is hugely dependent on the braking
system and this has been addressed quite well by the manufacturers of
this stunning sedan. An advanced anti lock braking system is offered in
all its trims, which facilitates in efficient mechanism. Conventional
disc brakes are fixed to the front wheels, while the rear wheels are
affixed with drum brakes. In order to glide smoothly over uneven roads,
an efficient suspension is required and this has been taken well care of
by the designers. The front axle is equipped with a McPherson strut
with coil springs and then the rear axle is fitted with a twist beam
type of a mechanism. The electric power assisted steering system plays a
role in enriching the handling of this compact sedan. By having a tilt
adjustable steering mechanism, there is a feasibility to adjust it
according to the driver’s preference.

Safety & Security

Ed’s take : The safety features on the XCent include dual airbags and ABS.
After all that is said and done, the choice always boils down to the
protection, a vehicle can provide to the occupants. On the inside, there
are air bags for the front passengers, which further enhance their
safety, in case of a head-on collision. Meanwhile, it is also loaded
with dual front airbags as well as rear parking camera with display in
its rear view mirror. The car can face possible threats, while it is
even parked anywhere, then such theft issues and unauthorized access can
be taken care of by the engine immobilizer feature, which has been
incorporated into this compact sedan. To top it all, the anti lock
braking system is offered as a standard feature in all its trims. The
rear bumper has a safety aspect that has a pair of reflectors
incorporated into it. There is a central door locking system, with which
the driver can simultaneously lock or unlock all the doors, by just
pressing a button. Another couple of crucial aspects which this compact
sedan has are a pair of front fog lamps affixed in the bumper and the
rear windscreen defogger that helps in extreme weather conditions. The
instrument cluster does a lot of multi tasking and has several alarms
and buzzers for the driver’s attention. These include door ajar warning
lamp and the driver seat belt notification. Other intelligent features
that have been equipped for adding more utility are a smart keyless
entry, parking sensors to identify the objects when reversing, while the
camera shows it on the ECM display.

Wheels

The Base and S variants are fitted with 14 inch steel wheels that
have full covers. The SX trim is equipped with 14 inch alloy wheels,
over which the radial tubeless tyres of 165/65 size are affixed. The top
end trim has a strong set of 15 inch diamond cut alloy wheels that are
covered by the radial tyres of size 175/60 R15 offering great control on
the road.

Pros

1. The face is stunningly classy.

2. Good fuel economy. After all, the mileage does matter !!!

3. Great performance by the petrol version.

4. The cabin is quite spacious.

5. There is an impressive leg room.

Porsche Cayenne and VW Touraeg have both got major updates this year so
it only seemed obvious that the Audi Q7 be updated too. Now, Audi has
taken the wraps off the 2015 Q7 SUV and it appears to have undergone
some major cosmetic reconfiguration.

The flagship SUV from the Ingolstadt- based automaker retains an all
too familiar shape but is now a whopping 325kgs lighter and roughly 26
per cent more efficient than the outgoing model. The SUV tips the scales
at 1995-kgs and has managed to pull off this task thanks to an all-new
aluminum-steel chassis and multi-material body composition.

Exterior

The 2015 Q7’s fascia reflects the German automaker’s new design
philosophy which now sees its cars moving away from the previous two
generation’s rounded edges to much sharper features. The headlights can
now be configured in the form of Xenon’s, LEDs or matrix LED headlights.
What appears to be standard across all three headlight setups are the
arrow- shaped LED daytime running lights with the top-spec models
getting the integrated turn signals.

The side profile appears to have been retained from the outgoing
model but the roofline has a sharper rake at the rear end and it appears
that the whole roof has also been lowered slightly. The bulging wheel
arches add to the butch look of the vehicle while there is some contrast
coloured moulding on the base of doors. The designs of the alloy wheels
too are different now, though we expect that the company is likely to
continue offering the older shapes depending on the market.

The rear, like the fascia, gets sharper lines giving a square
appearance to the overall design but thanks to the forward rake of the
glass does not look out of place. The entire mid-section below the tail
lamps has been reworked and thereare two bulge- like design elements on
which the badging have been placed. Finally, the exhaust tail pipes have
been changed and thanks to the new design philosophy are now flatter
and rectangular in shape.

Interior

Less is more seems to be the new philosophy for Audi as it has
simplified the cabin design by decreasing the size and number of the
elements on the dashboard. The steering, instrument panel and climate
control system all appear to be new while the screen has moved from
being in the dashboard to the top of it and has now also become larger
as well a touchscreen unit. It now uses Audi’s latest MMI system while
offering support for Android Auto as well as Apple Car Play. Adding to
this package is either a Bose system or a 23-speaker B&O surround
sound system.

In conformity with the reducing design, the gear lever is now a
smaller unit but other than that all elements look to be carried over
and in the same places too. If the front gets so much, then the rear too
looks to be a fun place. It can be configured with one or two 10.1-inch
tablets that boast of a 32GB memory and full HD camera (for when that
car selfie moment happens). Like its predecessors, the 2015 Q7 boasts of
three rows of seats and lots of storage spaces.

Engine and gearbox

The Q7 is being offered with the 3.0-litre TDI diesel mill which in
higher- spec models produces 272bhp and 600Nm of torque. It is also
available in a lower spec config where it produces 218bhp and 500Nm of
torque.

On the petrol front, the engine is a 3.0-litre unit that produces
333bhp and 440Nm of torque. There is also expected to be a 2.0-litre
petrol engine which will produce 252bhp and 370Nm of torque. This engine
will be offered only for the Asian markets. This Q7 also debuts Audi’s
new 3.0-litre plug-in hybrid diesel engine that will produce 373bhp and
700Nm of torque. All engines are offered with an 8-speed AT and Quattro
system as standard. Audi is now also offering an all-wheel steering on
some specific models.

Compeition and Price

The 2015 Audi Q7 will go on sale in Europe and America in the period
of June-August 2015 which means that we in India will get it by the end
of next year. It is expected to be priced significantly higher than the
current model and will compete with the VW Touraeg, Porsche Cayenne and
the Land Rover Range Rover.

Maruti Celerio has crossed 100,000 sales mark in the country, the
hatchback was launched last year at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. It
started the AMT – (Automated-Manual transmission) trend in the country
and was once the cheapest automatic available. Moreover, on June 03
2015, Celerio diesel was launched @ Rs 4.65 lac.
Christened as DDiS125 is now India’s smallest and cheapest diesel car
till date. Powered by an all-new indigenously developed 2-cylinder 793cc
diesel engine, the Celerio delivers the country’s best-ever fuel
efficiency figure of 27.62 kmpl. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the
maximum power output from the engine stands at 47.6 bhp @ 3,500 rpm and
the peak torque is rated at 125 Nm @ 2,000 rpm. Instead of a common-rail
diesel injection, this new engine boasts a Bosch engine management
system that comprises of a fuel injection block, a high-pressure fuel
pump and a fuel control unit.

Overview

Maruti Suzuki India is the leading automobile brand in the country
with a fleet of highly popular car models. It has always managed to keep
its numero-uno position in the industry by introducing new and updated
car models. Now again, it has created a buzz in the car markets by
introducing diesel versions of Maruti Celerio .
According to the ARAI certification, this newly launched version is
capable of producing a maximum mileage of 27.62 Kmpl, which is the most
by any other vehicle in this segment. Under its hood, there is a newly
developed 0.8-litre mill that runs on 2 cylinder configuration.
Currently, this vehicle is offered only with a five speed manual
transmission gearbox, while the AMT gearbox is expected The manufacturer
has rolled out this version in four variants like LDi, VDi, ZXi and ZXi
(O). Its top end version features airbags for front passengers, an
efficient security system, driver’s seat height adjuster, and ABS with
EBD. On the other hand, all its petrol trims have been retained without
any update to its variant line-up or to its features and specifications.
The petrol trims are powered by the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder K-series
motor that churns out 67bhp of power and generates 90Nm of commanding
torque. This mill is available with both manual and AMT transmission.
Additionally, the manufacturer is also offering a CNG version on the VXi
platform, which is also equipped with the same K10B petrol mill. This
version, with the help of CNG fuel kit, can give away a mileage of 31.7
Km/kg, which is best in its class.
In terms of exteriors, the newly introduced version looks the same
like its existing petrol trims. Even the interiors too looks the same,
since the change is only regarding the drive-train. There is no doubt
that this hatchback has a pleasing exterior design that would certainly
grab the attention of young car enthusiasts. The top end version also
gets the set of alloy wheels, which further adds to its bold appeal. It
has a very attractive front profile owing to its wider radiator grille
and large headlight cluster. Coming to the interiors, it has enough
space that is good enough to host at least five passengers. Its cabin
has a dual tone color scheme along with chrome accents that makes the
interiors look soothing to the eye. On the other hand, its safety
aspects are considerably better than other cars in its class, as it has
features like ABS, dual front airbags, front fog lamps and an advanced
security system. With its exceptional fuel efficiency and decent
features, it will take on the likes of Chevrolet Spark, Ford Figo, and
the upcoming Renault Kwid.

Exteriors

Coming to the external appearance, the newly launched version looks
no different from the existing petrol versions. The company has made no
changes to its exterior design, since the change is only regarding its
power-plant. It has a bold front facade unlike other entry level
hatchbacks, thanks to its aggressive radiator grille that has
horizontally positioned slats with chrome accents. Headlight clusters
are placed on either sides of the grille, which are large and are
powered by halogen based headlamps. The entry level LXI trim gets the
grille in black color, but the company’s logo is done up in chrome. The
body colored front bumper has a contemporary design with a wide air
intake section. Only the top end version gets this bumper with a pair of
round shaped fog lamps, which increases the visibility. From the side
profile it looks slightly bigger than other hatchbacks as it is taller
and has wider doors. Furthermore, two expressive lines on its doors
gives a resplendent look to the side facet. The outside mirrors are done
up in body color, but it has not been given with turn blinkers. The
automaker is offering base and mid range trims with a set of
conventional 13 inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, while the top
end ZXi trim is blessed with a set of stylish 14 inch alloy wheels. At
the rear, this four wheeler has a trendy design. It is fitted with a
clear lens taillight cluster that has chrome inserts inside. It also
sports a large windscreen accompanied with high mounted bright brake
light, which adds to the safety.
Exterior Measurements:
This small hatch comes with a total length of 3600mm along with a
decent width of 1600mm. It has a very good height of 1560mm, but the
ground clearance is low with just about 165mm. However, the company has
given this hatch a wheelbase of 2425mm, which offer generous space
inside the cabin.

Interiors

Ed’s Take: The interiors of the Celerio are
contemporary, and trendy too. It doesn’t get too many frills, and even
the built quality is just fine.
Like its exteriors, the insides of the petrol and newly launched
versions look the same with dual tone color scheme. The cabin is
extremely spacious with greater headroom, which eventually makes it
comfortable for the occupants inside. Inside the cabin, it gets the
signature Suzuki design traits and equipments that can be found on
several other models of the manufacturer. While providing decent seat
space, this vehicle also provides lot of storage spaces including cup
holders, magazine pockets, bottle holders and a large boot compartment.
The quality of the material used for the interiors is good, which is the
reason why it looks so pleasant from inside. Its seats have better
cushions and are integrated with headrest, which certainly offers
comfortable seating to all the occupants. The high end version also
features a driver seat height adjuster, which is an added advantage. The
car maker has used premium quality fabric upholstery for covering these
seats. In terms of equipments, its high end versions are being offered
with a proficient music system along with four high quality speakers
that keeps the occupants entertained while traveling. At the same time,
they are also offered with a stylish three spoke urethane steering wheel
with multi-functional switches mounted on it. This makes it simpler to
operate volume of audio, while receiving calls.
Interior Comfort:
Currently, this model series is available in four trim levels among
which, one is the optional trim. Compared to other hatchbacks, this
vehicle gets a lengthy list of features that eventually makes it more
competitive in the segment. All the trims have been equipped with a
manually operated air conditioning system along with a heater that
regulates the air temperature inside. They also have an antenna, fuel
lid opener, pivot type exterior mirrors and power steering system.
Furthermore, it also has utility based features like front sun visors
with passenger side vanity mirror, day/night inside rear view mirror,
rear luggage shelf, three assist grips, 60:40 rear split seats and five
drink holders. The mid range trim also has central door lock and
electric power windows. On the other hand, the ZXi and ZDi trim also
comes with aspects like security system and electrically adjustable
outside mirrors. In addition to these, the car maker has also installed
an advanced instrument panel, accessory power socket, glove box lid,
digital clock and numerous other such aspects. Beside these, its
optional trims have features like driver’s seatbelt warning lamp, tilt
adjustable steering, keyless entry function and driver’s seat height
adjuster.
Interior Measurements:
Since there are no updates made to its dimensions, its cabin remains
spacious as usual. The car maker built this with a large wheelbase of
2425mm, which is considerably large. On the other hand, this small car
also comes with a 235 litre of boot storage capacity, which is somewhat
satisfying.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Ed’s Take: The acceleration of the Celerio is
just ok. It isn’t amazing, but Maruti Suzuki has ensured that it has
some good drivability. The Green version’s drivability is just fine, the
power is decent.
Its petrol trims are available with five speed manual and automated
gearbox options to select from. The manual gearbox enables this vehicle
to break the 100 Kmph mark in about 14.9 seconds. At the same time, it
goes upto a maximum speed in the range of 130 to 140 Kmph. While the
auto gear shift version requires about 15 to 16 seconds to reach a 100
Kmph mark from a standstill. On the other hand, the other motor is
available only with a five speed manual gearbox option that enables the
vehicle to reach a maximum speed of 125 Kmph. It takes about 19 seconds
to accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph.

Engine and Performance

Ed’s Take: The performance of the Celerio is
just fine, it isn’t very quick and transmission is sluggish. There is a
rubber-band effect in this AMT transmission. The manual is just fine.
The newly launched diesel versions are fitted with an indigenously
built 0.8-litre drive-train that comprises of 2 cylinders, displacing
793cc. This mill has the ability to produce a peak power of just about
47bhp at 3500rpm, but surprisingly, its torque output clocks at 125Nm at
2000rpm, which is rather astonishing. This mill is mated to a five
speed manual gearbox that sends out the output to the front wheels. On
the other hand, there are rumours suggesting that the manufacturer might
offer this version with AMT gearbox in coming months. Coming to its
petrol trims, they are powered by a 1.0-litre, K-series power-plant that
is incorporated with a multi point fuel injection system. This mill has
3-cylinders and 12-valves that can displace 998cc, which enables it to
unleash a maximum power output of 67.06bhp at 6000rpm that results in
generating a peak torque of 90Nm at just 3500rpm. The company is also
offering a CNG version that is equipped with the same K10B petrol mill,
but it comes with intelligent gas port injection. When switched to the
CNG mode, it can churn out 57bhp of maximum power at 6000rpm and
delivers 77Nm of peak torque at 3500rpm. Apart from the optional petrol
trim, all the other trims are available with an option to choose between
5-speed manual and automated transmission gearbox.

Mileage

Ed’s Take: The mileage of the Celerio is good.
It is the first vehicle to have automated manual transmission. The Green
version of the Celerio is a lot more fuel efficient and cheaper to run
too.
This vehicle is now available with two power-plants with three
different fuel options. Its petrol and CNG trims are powered by the same
1.0-litre, 3-cylinder K-Series engine that is incorporated with a multi
point fuel injection system. With petrol injection, this mill is
capable of producing a maximum mileage of 23.1 kmpl, which is quite good
in its class. However, with CNG injection, the mileage goes upto 31.7
Km/kg. On the other hand, the newly introduced version is capable of
returning 27.62 Kmpl (as per ARAI), which is rather remarkable.

Power of Maruti Celerio

Ed’s Take: The power produced by the Celerio is good and the K-Series engines have good performance and even efficiency.
The newly launched version is slightly less powerful, but its torque
output is better than other hatchbacks. Like mentioned above, it is
powered by a 793cc mill that runs on 2 cylinder configuration. It churns
out 47bhp of maximum power and delivers 125Nm of impressive torque. On
the other hand, its petrol trims are powered by a K10B drive-train that
has 3 cylinders. This mill unleashes 67bhp of power along with a
hammering torque of 90Nm. However, this output goes down when switched
to CNG fuel. In this case it churn out 57bhp of maximum power that
results in 77Nm of peak torque.

Stereo & Accessories

Ed’s Take: The accessories offered on the
Celerio are music system, steering mounted audio and that’s about it.
Competition offers more features after what the Celerio is offering at
the moment.

This hatchback comes with an array of equipments
that keeps the occupants entertained on the go. However, they can be
found only in the high end trims. Those versions house a proficient
audio unit featuring a CD player and a Radio. Additionally, they also
have support for USB, AUX-In and Bluetooth connectivity, which enables
seamless audio streaming and calls connectivity. The high end trims also
have a three spoke urethane steering wheel with multi-functional
switches that makes it quite convenient to the driver.

You can now buy Maruti Celerio accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Ed’s Take: The handling of the Celerio isn’t that great. It has good brakes, but that’s about it. The ride is supple.
This hatchback comes with a superior braking system, which ensures
precise stopping of the vehicle. Its front wheels have been fitted with
ventilated disc brakes, while the rear ones have been equipped with
traditional drum brakes. The high end trims have anti lock braking
system that improves its overall mechanism. In terms of suspension, the
front axle is paired with a McPherson Strut system and the rear one gets
a coupled torsion beam. Additionally, it is also loaded with coil
springs, which is helpful to keep the vehicle well balanced. Handling
this hatchback is rather simple, thanks to its power assisted steering
system, which supports a minimum turning radius of just 4.7 meters.

Safety & Security

Ed’s Take: The safety features on the Celerio are very limited, and the base models offer almost nothing when t comes to safety.
Like mentioned above, the manufacturer has not compromised on the
most important safety aspects of this model series. The base and mid
range trims have same set of safety features like 2-point rear center
seat belt, high mounted third brake light, headlight leveler, front
ventilated disc brake, immobilizer, front wiper with intermittent
setting and front washer. While the ZXi and ZDi trims have rear window
wiper with washer, driver airbag, and a rear window demister. While the
optional trims have features like dual front air bags, anti lock braking
system, and outside air temperature display.

Wheels

The neatly crafted wheel arches of base and mid range trims are
fitted with a set of 13-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers. These
rims are further covered with high performance tubeless radial tyres of
size 155/80 R13. While top end trim gets a classy set of 14-inch alloy
wheels, which have been equipped with 165/70 R14 sized radials. The
company has also given a full size spare wheel, which is affixed in the
boot compartment with all other tools required for changing a flat tyre.

Pros

1. This vehicle is the most fuel efficient in the market.

2. AMT gearbox is an added advantage.

3. External appearance is rather decent.

4. Value for money product with good set of features.

5. Service after sales is good.

Maruti Suzuki has launched its much-anticipated Baleno
premium hatchback at Rs 4.99 lac in India today. This is India’s
largest carmaker’s second offering, after the S-Cross, that will be
exclusively sold through the Nexa premium dealerships. Named after the
mid-size sedan from a decade ago, the Baleno competes against the likes
of Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz. The engine options
though on the Baleno are identical to the Swift. Its petrol variants
are powered by the 83bhp 1.2-litre K12 mill, while the diesel trims
comes with the tried-and-tested Fiat-sourced 74bhp 1.3 DDiS diesel
motor.

Overview

Maruti Baleno is the second superior product from
MSIL after S-Cross. Launched as a premium hatchback, it will be sold to
the customers exclusively through their Nexa dealership network across
India. The company has commenced its production and assembly work way
before its launch, expecting for a huge demand for this vehicle.
Introduced for the first time in India, it will also enter the shores of
Europe and other developing nations across the world. As for in India,
it is placed in the sub 4-meter segment where it will lock horns with
Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and other top class models. As
expected, the manufacturer has brought it with two engine options
borrowing them from the Swift hatchback. The oil-burner is a 1.3-litre
mill, while the petrol motor is a smaller 1.2-litre engine. For the love
of auto enthusiasts, the 1197cc motor is available to choose with
manual and automatic transmission gearbox. As for the variant choices,
there are four trim levels wherein, the base version starts with the
name Sigma. Delta, Zeta and Alpha are three other versions in the series
among which, Alpha is the top-of-the-line trim. Like its tagline, it
carries a premium range of features like push start/stop button with
smart key, electrically foldable ORVMs, remote keyless entry and a
smartplay infotainment system. Moving on to the safety, this is the
section, which received highest priority from the manufacturer ensuring
maximized protection to the occupants. This vehicle gets the Suzuki TECT
body, which has an innovative design with all impact resistant beams
and crumple zones for safeguarding the occupants inside. It also gets
features like anti-theft security system, ABS with EBD, automatic
headlamps and reverse parking assistance.
One should talk about its looks and elegance, thanks to its excellent
build quality and cosmetics. Its exteriors have a curvaceous look,
especially from its side facet. Its A and B pillars are coated in black,
which is an added styling factor. Its front profile isn’t that
impressive as its side facet, but the radiator grille with chrome
inserts renders it a decorous look. As far as its interiors are
concerned, they look much better than its outer facet, thanks to the
quality finish and for the use of premium material. Its dashboard seems
to have an eye-soothing dual tone color scheme along with brushed
metallic accents on its central console. We can also see that
infotainment system is skilfully placed in the center fascia with chrome
surround. Its ergonomic and comfortable seating is another fact that
makes this Baleno as an ideal choice for the buyers.

Exteriors

Touted as the world-car from MSIL, this brand new hatchback carries a
unique liquid flow design. It is a specific sculpture based on
energetic mass of water in motion that renders a powerful styling and
highly defined curves to its body. The build quality and the finish it
gets is somewhat better, as compared to the models present in company’s
portfolio. Its front facade has a V shaped radiator grille underlined
with a chrome strip. The headlight cluster has a swept-back design
featuring projector lamps and LED DRLs as well. Being a premium hatch,
it also gets body colored bumper on front and rear facets for all the
versions. Its front bumper has a bit of sporty cues, which adds bold
appeal to this classy front facade. Coming to the sides, it looks much
better than any other company’s model, thanks to its beautiful curves
and window frames. Except the C pillar, all the other pillars are coated
in black, while the outside mirror caps are done up on body color. Its
Zeta and Alpha trims have chrome garnished door handles, while the
remaining versions are bestowed with body colored ones as standard.
Similarly, the alloy wheels are given to the top two trims, while the
rest are provided with steel rims featuring full wheel caps. Its rear
has a much better look than its front facade owing to its sleek
tailgate. There is a chrome strip placed in between the windscreen and
tailgate rendering it a unique stature. Adding to its elegance is the
rear spoiler, which is integrated with a high mounted third brake light.
Overall, its modernistic stance is complimented by the chrome plated
company’s badge affixed at front and rear.
Exterior Measurements:
This vehicle that was displayed at the recently held auto show had a
total length measuring 4023mm. But for India, it come with a length of
under 4 meters at 3995mm. This is a good news for buyers, since it will
help to score tax benefits. Its width measures at 1745mm, while the
height is 1500mm. The wheelbase is pretty long with 2520mm, but the
ground clearance is normal with 170mm.

Interiors

Its interiors styling is just a continuation of its exterior
elegance, as richness emulates from every inch. It has a black finish
inside, which gives a soothing effect to the eyes. Also there are
metallic accents given on the door handles and gear knob that further
elevates the regal stance of the cabin. Apart from the base Sigma trim,
all the other trims are provided with a multi-functional three-spoke
steering wheel that eases the operation of audio and call function. Its
dashboard has a design that reflects the cues of liquid-flow pattern of
its outsides. It also gets a complete black finish, but we can see
metallic accents on the central console. There is an infotainment system
placed elegantly on the central console, which can be accessed easily.
As mentioned earlier, its ergonomic seating arrangement does explain why
choosing Baleno will be the right choice. The seating arrangement is
very comfortable or perhaps better than any other hatchback in its
class. Its driver’s seat has height adjustment function, while the rear
bench seat gets a split folding facility for improving the boot
capacity.

Interior Comfort:
Coming to the interior comfort, this newly launched vehicle comes in a
total of four variants as mentioned earlier. Its base Sigma trim has
very limited amount of features and the list starts with central locking
system, front power windows tilt steering, front seat height adjustable
headrest and it goes on until manual air conditioning system. The
next-in-line Delta has a better package with additional facilities like
remote keyless entry, all four power windows with driver’s side auto
up/down facility, electrically adjustable outside mirrors with folding
and rear seat headrests. This version also gets an automatic air
conditioning system that keeps the cabin pleasant for a pleasurable
driving experience. Moving on to the Zeta trim, it gets features like
steering with telescopic facility, follow me home headlamps, front
center armrest, height adjustable driver’s seat and push start/stop
button with smart key. This trim additionally gets a leather wrapped
steering wheel and a multi-information speedometer with display. The top
end Alpha version also gets the same set of features, which are
avaialble in the Zeta trim.

Interior Measurements:
As we can see in the brochure, this Baleno has a large boot
compartment of 339 litres. The space inside the cabin is also generous,
especially with good leg and shoulder space. Overall, this vehicle has
enough space inside to provide a comfortable traveling experience to
five passengers.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Its petrol version comes with two transmission options including the
CVT automatic. This is the first Maruti Suzuki model to get CVT gearbox
as an option that propels the car towards a top speed of 150 Kmph. This
mill also powers the vehicle to break the 100 Kmph mark in just 14
seconds. Its manual version can also achieve the same top speed, but it
is quicker in terms of pickup, since it can accelerate from 0 to 100
Kmph in just 12 seconds. Its diesel version is not as good as its petrol
versions in this regard, as they requires about 16 seconds to break the
100 Kmph mark. However, they can go upto a top speed ranging between
155 to 160 Kmph.

Engine and Performance

The manufacturer has launched this model series with a choice of two
engine options. One is the 1.2-litre VVT petrol motor, which is also
powering a few other MSIL models. It comprises of 4-cylinders based on
DOHC valve configuration. This engine received no tweaks and it
continues to produce 83.14bhp of power at 6000rpm and 115Nm of torque at
4000rpm. This petrol motor is available with a five speed manual and a
CVT automatic transmission options. The diesel versions are powered by a
1.3-litre oil-burner, which is integrated with common rail fuel
injection technology. This power plant churns out 74bhp of power at
4000rpm that results in a pounding torque of 190Nm at 2000rpm. This
engine’s transmission duties are handled by a five speed manual gearbox
that sends out torque to the front wheels.

Mileage

The petrol versions of Baleno are turned out to be surprisingly fuel
efficient thanks to the 1.2-litre VVT mill with MPFI technology. This
power plant is capable of returning a mileage of 21.4 Kmpl, which is
perhaps the best. The other one is a 1.3-litre DDiS oil-burner, which is
also quite good in terms of mileage. This mill powers the car to give
away a peak mileage of 27.39 Kmpl.

Power of Maruti Baleno

Its 1197cc petrol motor is a 4-cylindered one and is based on the
double overhead camshaft valve configuration. This mill can churn out
83.14bhp of power and a torque of 115Nm. Its diesel version is also
based on the same configuration like its petrol version. This 1248cc
mill has the ability to unleash 74bhp along with a torque of 190Nm.

Stereo & Accessories

Like any other premium hatchback, this vehicle too gets a good
quality audio unit featuring FM/CD/MP3 player. Accompanied with this is
the Bluetooth connection whose controls are placed on the steering
wheel. Also, there are connectivity options like USB port and AUX-In.
These features are given to all, expect the base Sigma version. The top
of the line Alpha trim gets a SmartPlay infotainment system as standard
equipment. It also includes navigation system, voice command and a
facility for smartphone connectivity and Apple CarPlay.

You can now buy Maruti Baleno accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

This is the most important aspect for any four-wheeler. This
hatchback gets ventilated disc brakes for its front wheels and drum
braking system for rear ones. Interestingly, all the variants are being
offered with ABS and EBD, which aids the braking mechanism. In terms of
suspension, its front axle gets a McPherson strut and the rear one has
torsion beam type of suspension. It also gets a reliable electric rack
and pinion type of power steering system, which is good in terms of
response and makes drive quite simpler.

Safety & Security

Like mentioned above, this section gets a high priority unlike any
other vehicle in its class. It has a special Suzuki TECT body structure
that creates a safety shell for passengers and minimizes any form of
risks in the event of an accident. As for the features, its Sigma
version gets essential factors like anti-theft security system, ABS with
EBD, dual horn, headlamp leveling device, dual airbags, front seatbelt
pre-tensioner, seatbelt force limiter and driver seatbelt reminder. The
‘Delta’ trim has features like pinch guard power window, rear defogger,
rear wiper with washer and reverse parking sensors. While the Zeta
version has protective features like front fog lamps and auto headlamps
as standard. The high-end version also gets reverse parking camera as
standard that aids driver while parking or maneuvering in tight spots.

Wheels

In terms of wheel options, both Zeta and Alpha version are provided
with alloy wheels of size 16-inch. These rims are covered with 195/55
R16 sized tubeless radial tyres. The other trims are available with
15-inch steel rims as standard, which are wrapped with 185/65 R15 sized
tyres.

Pros

1. External appearance looks pretty good.

2. Interiors and comfort features are at par with others.

3. Fuel Economy is rather impressive.

4. SmartPlay infotainment system adds to its plus point.

5. Price range looks to be very reasonable

Maruti Ciaz
is a premium sedan model, which was launched barely a year ago.
Although it received a good response in the initial stages, but it lost
the steam as the days passed by. To counter this, MSIL has recently
updated its diesel trims by incorporating them with their mild hybrid
technology named SHVS. However, its petrol variants were kept untouched.
Now again its ‘RS Editions’ have been rolled out in the country, which
is basically a sporty version of Ciaz. This latest edition gets all the
benefits and equipment from the existing Z Plus variants. As for its
exteriors, we can see that there are lower spoilers all round the body
enhancing its sporty appeal. Furthermore, we can also see that there is a
deck-lid spoiler accompanied with an additional brake light that
distinguishes it from the rest. Coming to the interiors, this version
has an all black interior scheme highlighted by the Grey Chrome
finishing on the instrument panel. Apart from these, all the other
cosmetics and facilities remains same. With so many back to back
launches in a span of just few days explains that the company is in a
desperate mode to make its mark in the mid-size sedan segment. This
segment is currently ruled by Honda City and Hyundai Verna. Moving on to
the recent updates, its diesel trims have been updated with mild hybrid
technology for improving the fuel efficiency. Recently, two new trims
have also been added to its existing line-up, they are named as VXI (O)
and VDI (O), which have ABS along with dual front airbags as standard.
However, the price of its VXI (O) is not disclosed yet. Apart from
these, it also has other advanced aspects like Idle Stop Start function,
Torque Assistance, Brake Energy Regeneration and Gear Shift indicator.
However, the Smart Hybrid Technology is the major factor that is going
to revolutionize this sedan segment. Under this technology, the
drive-train is accompanied with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG),
which improves the fuel efficiency by supplementing the power-plant’s
output. It is also capable of recovering the energy from this car’s
deceleration, which will be stored in a high performance battery. This
aids the motor while accelerating and thus, reduces the consumption of
fuel even further. Apart from these, all its other features remain
identical to its outgoing versions.
On its exteriors, it gets the exclusive SHVS badge on its tailgate,
while the instrument cluster on inside gets new functions relating to
the fuel saving technologies. This latest sedan is all about style,
best-in-class seating comfort and features. It has aspects like
projector headlamps, a proficient music system and power adjustable
ORVMs as standard fitments across all the variants. Its high end
versions also have a set of 16-inch alloy wheels, speed volume
compensation along with push button engine start and stop function as
standard. Its front facade gets a beautifully structured chrome radiator
grille flanked by dual port headlight cluster. Its interiors are
spacious, plush and has dual tone color scheme, which is further
accentuated by metallic inserts. The car maker is top end versions with
features like a fully automatic climate control system and height
adjustable driver’s seat, which further adds to the customer delight. As
far as its safety aspects are concerned, the entry level variants have a
central locking system, immobilizer, anti-theft security system,
three-point seat belts and rear defogger.

Exteriors

Editors take: Elegant front coincides well with the smooth flowing rear design which is bound to appeal most consumers.
The term ‘RS’ does sound something sportier, which raises our
expectations regarding that particular edition. However, this rally
sport edition of Ciaz gets minimal updates with lower spoilers all
around the body. Also, we can see a rear spoiler on the boot-lid that
compliments its exclusivity. These are the only revisions done to the
sedan. While the recently introduced hybrid trims have identical
external appearance as its existing versions. The only change that this
SHVS version gets is that it has exclusive badging at the rear. It is
considered one of the most stylish sedan in its segment owing to its
eye-catching body structure and modernistic cosmetics. It has a classy
front facade that is fitted with a neatly sculptured radiator grille
with horizontally positioned strips. This grille is flanked by
aggressive dual port headlight cluster housing projector headlamps and
turn indicators. The front body colored bumper is designed with a small
air dam along with an integrated spoiler. The top end variant also gets
fog lamps accompanied by chrome strips that enhances its stylish appeal.
The overall look of the front is emphasized by the prominent company’s
logo, which is embedded to the grille. This sedan has a sleek side
profile featuring several trendy cosmetics. Its Z variants have chrome
plated waistline molding and door handles, which adds to its classy
appeal. It also has a neatly sculptured ORVMs, which are integrated with
turn blinkers. While the V and V+ variants have body colored wing
mirrors and door handles. The main highlight of its sides are the newly
designed 16-inch multi spoke styled alloy wheels that gives it an urbane
appeal. However, they are given to the top end variants, whereas its
entry and mid level variants have been bestowed with conventional steel
wheels including full wheel covers. This latest sedan has a breathtaking
rear profile, thanks to its expressive boot lid and a well structured
taillight cluster. Its boot lid has a lot of chrome inserts in the form
of variant badging, company’s logo and a horizontally positioned chrome
strip. In addition to these, its body colored bumper also has
expressively designed strips in chrome, which gives a magnificent look
to the rear. However, most of these aspects are given to the top end
variants.
Exterior Measurements:
This sedan has a total length of 4490mm along with a decent width of
1730mm. Its total height measures about 1485mm and the ground clearance
at 170mm, which is quite low. It has a long wheelbase of 2650mm, which
is quite long. While the boot storage capacity is impressive with a
volume of 510-litres, while the fuel tank has a a capacity to store upto
43 litres.

Interiors

Editors Take: Due to its long wheelbase, there
is more than sufficient amount of leg room despite the front seats being
pulled all the way back.
The exclusive RS Editions of Ciaz has its interiors in an all black
color scheme. Adding to this, the instrument panel gets Grey chrome
finish. These two are the only revisions done to this RS edition. Moving
on to the Hybrid versions, they have received a slightly modified

deceleration and supplements for the output. Besides addition of this
technologies, the 1248cc drive-trains specifications remains unchanged.
