Juan Hormiga is one of my very favourite books! It's funny, the story & narration are just fantastic and the tone is just perfect!

I sold English rights to Elsewhere Editions in the US where it was released last year and to WMF Martins Fontes, in Brazil. And I would LOVE to find a FRENCH and DUTCH and Portuguese publisher!

Pablo Albo’s text is extraordinary. Short, concise sentences string themselves together; no word is too much. The rhythm of the words and sentences, the repetitions, pauses and ellipses create a magic and astonishing pull, even though the text seems sparse and nothing spectacular happens in the story. A she-wolf trots through the forest, rain drops fall one after the other, an ant runs up a tree and back down again, timid rabbits are watchful, the wind blows, the evening breaks, stars shine in the night-time sky. The minimalist, carefully structured, repetitive, purely descriptive and somewhat hermetic text is congenially echoed in Cecilia Moreno’s pictures. Monochrome shapes, lines, dots merge at times into geometric patterns. The sense of order is reinforced by the background of chequered paper. »Loba« is an original picture book, with brilliantly composed text and illustrations. A true discovery. (Age: 5+) [JW] Even the life of a 100-year-old tortoise named Nina is finite. Restive and curious, she heads out on the last leg of her long journey to understand what »the end« means. She receives many answers to this seemingly simple question. The end is waning food supplies, says the ant. The caterpillar meanwhile longs for the end as it brings a new beginning. For a swallow, the end is the right moment to change direction. Or, as the snake explains, the end is part of a circle and thus always also a beginning, because circles never end. The episodes in this picture book are pearls, describing Nina’s encounters with other animals that cause her as well as readers to reflect. The striking pictures are also wonderful. In them, the flowing shapes and colours of the dense forest proliferate – mossy green, warm, earthy brown, flaming red, radiant sky blue, stony grey. Darkness gradually seeps in, announcing the end. I just received from Loopvis, Biography of Fly by Booker Prize Nominee Jaap Robben and it's awesome, quirky and funny! Jaap Robben tells the story of a fly, from the moment it enters the world as a larva right up to its deathbed. The story was initially written for a Dutch literary festival and the 25 short chapters were turned into posters that you could read at bus stops while walking or biking throughout the city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Loopvis turned it into a book and the first print of 3000 copies was sold in less than 2 months in Dutch, when bookshops weren't even open in the Netherlands! Different covers exist for the title, as Loopvis and the binder used residual linen material from previous binding. The Dutch Flemish Fund will be happy to help for translation fees for international adaptations, so ask me for rights! You don't want to miss it!

HOW TO HANDLE A (MEDDLING) PARENT

PREPARE YOURSELF MENTALLY.
Remember that the holidays are a time for celebration, and try to maintain a positive attitude no matter what triggers your parents may pull.
IF YOUR PARENTS GIVE UNWANTED OR ANNOYING ADVICE, BE POLITE AND CHANGE THE SUBJECT.
Say “Thank you for your concern and perspective. I’ll have to think about that! But I’d really love to talk about you. Tell me how is ____ going/doing?” Many parents love to talk about themselves and friends.
AVOID CONFRONTATION AND REMEMBER TO SPEAK IN INARGUABLE TRUTHS.
Never respond to a meddling parent with phrases such as “you always,” “you never,” or “you don’t.” Simply say how you feel, and again, change the subject.
“That question makes me feel anxious—my stomach is tight now and I don’t want to ruin the night. I’m thinking we should change the subject.”
COUNTER NEGATIVE REMARKS WITH POSITIVE ONES.
If your parent says, “Our house could use a little TLC” say “That’s true—but at least we enjoy it to the fullest!” If your parent says, “When are you going to get a real job?” counter with “I’m making great progress on my novel.”
AVOID THE FOLLOWING TOPICS.
Money, politics, religion, and sex. Do not take the bait.
ASK FOR THEIR OPINION ON A LESS-IRRITATING TOPIC.
Meddling parents simply want to show their love and help, and asking for their opinions makes them feel needed. Seek their input on a made-up problem to distract them from more sensitive issues: “I’m thinking of having my ______ done—what do you think?”
BE READY TO EXCUSE YOURSELF IF THINGS GET HEATED.
Do not say, “I can’t listen to this anymore,” but just excuse yourself and go to the bathroom. Finish your drink and say, “I need a refill.” Make no promises to return.
WHEN IN DOUBT, FAKE AN EMERGENCY—OR CONNECTION ISSUES.
“My dog is throwing up—I have to go.”
“I just got a call from _____—he/she is stuck with a flat tire, and I am going to help her/him.”
“Mom? Dad? Can you hear me? You froze—I’ll text you later.”
