- Turn off the first layer to see that the new layer has a vector mask identicial to the shape and opacity of the first layer

Some useful things you might not know about selection

If you want to select an area the same shape as a layer, hold CTRL and click on the layer thumbnail.

The selection tool is not restricted to a binary choice between an area that is selected and an area that is not. You can have semi-transparent selections:

- On an empty layer make a gradient from opaque to transparent.

- Use free transform (Ctrl+T) shrink it. Hold Shift when resizing to maintain the proporthion.

If you haven’t used free transform yet, it lets you resize, skew and distort the selected layer.

Click and drag a corner point to resize, Ctrl click and drag a corner point to affect just that corner, Ctrl click and drag on any side to skew the whole layer. Move the cursor near a corner and you get a rotate option. Hold SHIFT when rotating to snap to more useful angles.

If you have a recent version of photoshop, you should see a icon in the toolbar. This lets you distort the layer using a mesh warp.

- Ctrl click on the layer thumbnail. – it seems that the selection is just a rectangle but actually the full gradient is selected. The selection dotted line only shows you pixels that are more than 50% opaque. The less transparent pixels are selected, you just can’t see that yet.

- Turn off the layer and make a new empty layer

- Pick a new color and use Alt+Backspace to fill the selection with foreground color (use Ctrl+Backspace to fill with background color) - press Ctrl+D to deselect and notice that the opacity is identical to that of the original Layer.

Other presets

Presets don’t just apply to the Brush tool. You can use them to remember your settings for every tool.

Another preset I I use fairly often is my ‘SmudgyBlurryDabble’ blender

You should have noticed by now that the default smudge tool is horrible but it can be turned into a nice blender with some alterations

- Look through your brush files and a fairy round paintbrush stroke, like this one:

- Select the smudge tool (R or SHIFT + R until you see the finger icon), right click and select the same brush tip

- Click on the brush settings (These numbers are just a rough guide because I don’t know what brush tip you’re using)

- My diameter is about 60pixels. It’s easy to change this from image to using the {} buttons but try to pick the size that will usually fit the image size you usually work with (I rarely work bigger than 2000px in either dimension)

- Set the spacing to about 20% or less.

- In ‘Shape Dynamics’ set the angle jitter to 100%

- In ‘Scattering’ set the scatter to about 250% on both axes and set the ‘count’ to about 3

- In ‘Other Dynamics’ set the Strength to ‘Pen Control’

This image shows the effect that this preset has on three blocks of color. The’ Before‘ image shows the size of the smudge brush used.

A Preset like this can be hard for some computers to manage in real-time so reduce your ‘Scattering’ amount and ‘count’ settings until it runs smoothly.

Save the smudge presets the same way you saved the brush presets.

After some experimentation (remember to see how the brush ‘flow’ setting affects your brushstrokes), when you’ve got a bunch of settings you like, you don’t want to have to apply those settings every time you want to use that kind of brush so :

- Click Window > Tool Presets

If there are already presets here, click the arrow at the top right of the tool preset palette and go to Preset Manager. Select all the presets and delete them ( this isn’t permanent, it’s just removing them for now so you can create a new uncluttered bunch of presets)

- At the bottom –right of the palette there’s a ‘create new tool preset’ icon. Click it and then give your preset a name

There is an option to ‘’ include color”. I recommend you UNtick this. If it’s ticked, then whenever you use that preset it will change your foreground color to the one you had selected when you saved it.

You will probably not want to use the same color every time you use that preset.

- Click OK. The preset appears in the palette. Click the blue arrow menu button and click ‘save tool presets’.

Now photoshop will remember all the settings you had selected for that brush and it has created a file on your hard drive that you can bring from one computer to another to continue using your own presets on different machines.

The presets are not referencing the original brush tips you’ve used so if you transfer the presets

To another computer you don’t need to also transfer the brush set

Here are some examples of my presets. You’ll probably be able to guess how they were made. If any of them are confusing, ask and I’ll explain.

Brush presets

- Display the brush tips available in the current set

Brush Tip shape

- Here you can pick a brush tip, alter it’s size, flip it along one or both axes, squash it, rotate it and choose how tightly spaced the nib will appear when drawn in a continues line. (100% means the brush will be stamped one full width of the brush apart)

To make this clearer, I’m going to use an arrow brush to illustrate the different settings.

- The brush stamped once with default settings.

- With spaing set to 100% I drew a straight line

- Spacing at 5% and then 200%

- Spacing at 100% and ‘shape dynamics’ ticked, size jitter set to 0% and ‘Control’ set to pen pressure

- Same as above but with size jitter set to 100% and no pen pressure control.

- Size jitter set to 0%, no pen control, angle jitter set to 100%

- Same as above but with angle jitter set to ‘direction’, and brush tip rotated “-90 degrees” in the ‘brush tip shape’ menu.

- No shape dynamics, using the ‘Scattering’ option without any pen pressure just scaling up the ‘scatter’ amount

…and so on. You should see now the difference between ‘jitter’ and assigning control to pen behavior (pressure, tilt etc.)

What the other options do becomes clear after a bit of expirementation.

Example 9 was made with ‘texture’ option. I picket a texture, set it to ‘substract’ and altered the other settings a bit.

Example 10 was made with the ‘dual brush’ option. It sets the opacity and appearance of the first brush using the behavior another brush tip. In this case the second tip was a paintbrush stroke set to ‘Linear burn’, spacing at 25%, scatter (both axes) 180% and count 1.

‘Other dynamics’ is where to set the Opacity and Flow settings. Flow is a measure of how quick the paint is applied.

Example 11 is Opacity set to open pressure.

‘Color Dynamics’ shifts the brush colour according either to the foreground and background colours you’ve chosen or by altering the other options you see in that palette.

Example 12 used the colour red with Hue, Saturation and brightness jitters set to 50%.

Path Follow

Use path Stroke to outline a shape with a dashed line or a custom brush.

- Choose an image you want to outline

- Make your brush or choose an existing brush to use and set it to the right size. Make some test swuiggles till it looks right and then undo.

- In the layer palette, Ctrl click the layers thumbnail to select its alpha. Choose one of the select tools, Morwuee (M) or Losso(L).

- Right-click on the selection and choose “Make work path”. Keep the tolerance low for accuracy.

Create a new layer and select the brush tool again (B)

- Go to Window > Paths.

At the bottom of the path palette there are buttons to fill the path, stroke with brush or load the path as selection. Click the second one (the empty circle) to outline the path with the current brush settings.

*if it looks wrong just undo and the path will still be there. After you brush tip settings for spacing and angle control to make the kind of outlines you want.*

- when you’re done, delete the path or shift-click it’s thumbnail to hide it.

MASKS ON MASKS

Ocassionally (rarely) you may want to add a mask to an existing mask but unfortunately it’s not just a case of adding another mask using the mask button. If this seems unnecessary, I’ll give an example of why you might want this.

Here I have a layer that has a mask. I want to keep the original layer intact (to collapse a mask, right-click on it and choose ‘Apply Mask’) to edit later, I want to keep the mask shape intact to edit later but I also want to apply a fade to the layer.

- Create a layer, paint some stuff on it.

- Add a mask, paint some black on it

- Press Ctrl+G to add the layer to its own group

- Add a mask to this group

Now you have the original layer preserved, the original mask preserved and a new mask slightly altering the combined layer and mask.

Personally, when I’m painting, I flatten the image a lot. I tend not to work with many layers but sometimes you need to keep some layers or mask editable for a while, while you tend to other parts of the image.

Layer masks more sophisticated metod of masking than clipping masks of locks because you have much more control over the transparency but they’re not necessarily always the best option.

Remember to use them in conjunction with clipping masks.

- Create a new image and fill it with random colour.

- Make a new layer on top and fill it with different colours.

- Click the ‘add layer mask’ at the layers palette. Now the layer has a white box beside it and your colours have gone to freyscale.

- Choose pure black as your colour and paint some stroles on the image. The black areas turn transpatrent. With vector masks, Black is transparent, White is Opaque and the grey tones inbetween are different levels of opacity. Use a low opacity brush to add some grey values to the mask.

- Select the gradient tool (Shift+G to turn the paint bucket to gradient), select the second kind of gradient (foreground colour to transparent), set it to Linear and click and drag on the image to apply it to your vector mask.

The huge advantage that this process gives over just using the eraser is that it’s non-destructive. Your original layer is still intact.

Pressing the / key on a layer that has a vector mask reveals the mask as a colour over the original layer. By default it’s Red with 50% maximum opacity. If the image you’re working on is mostly red, you can change the colour and maximum opacity by double-clicking on the mask thumbnail.

You can edit the vector mask almost as much as a normal layer. You can apply blurs, use your own brush sets, invert it and you can transforms it.

If you want to transform a layer with a vector mask, just click on its thumbnail in the layer palette and apply the free transform (Ctrl+T)

If you want to transform the image but NOT the vector mask, click on the chain between the two thumbnails and apply the transform.

Now you can transform and move the image while the mask remains in place. If you select the mask thumbnail, you can move the mask without moving the image. Unlinking the two means you can also apply blurs to the image without blurring the mask.

CLIPPING MASK

Locking transparency is the most basic way of working with a fixed alpha. Using CLIPPING MASKS is a way of using an older layers transparency without altering the new layer.

- Using the file from the previous example, turn off all the locks.

- Create a new layer and fill it with lots of colours.

- Right-click on the layer in the layers palette and choose ‘create clipping mask’ or hold Alt and click on the line dividing the two layers or press Ctrl+Alt+G

- Create a new layer, repeat step 2 and 3. The new layer conforms to the opacity of the first layer and not the second layer. This means you can make a layer and have many other layers (including adjustment layers) inherit its opacity.

Now if you start blurring, distorting or erasing parts of the original layer, all the clipped layers above it will inherit the new opacity.

Locks and Masks

Locks and Masks

Use locks prevent modification or movement of a layer. Use masks to hide parts of layers without altering the original layer.

- Create a new image (Ctrl+N) and then a new layer (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+N)

- Delete the Background layer.

- Using a large soft brush and black as your colour, click in the middle of the image

- Click the first lock. This is the TRANSPARANCY lock (shortcut / key). Choose a new colour and a smaller brush and start painting. The transparency is preserved from when you applied the lock.

- Apply a strong Gaussian blur to see the that the colour information within the shape is affected but not the transparency of the pixels.

- Click the second lock. This prevents all pixel modification. Blur effects etc are disabled.

- Click the third lock this locks the layers position. You can click the second lock again so that pixel modification is allowed but the position of the layer remains fixed.

- Click the last lock to lock all the previous properties.

Batch Processing in photoshop

Batch Processing in photoshop

Use Natch Processing to automate changes to many images.

Suppose you have fifty images that you been scanned sideways and you need to rotate, desaturate and boost the contrast of each one. You only have make these changes to one image and photoshop will do it to all of them.

- Open one of the images.

- Create a new action, make the alterations you need to make to the image (rotate, desaturate, apply curves adjustment etc.) and stop recording. (you don’t need to assign a function key if you’re only going to use this action for Batch processing)

- Close the image. DO NOT SAVE CHANGES, the action has recorded the process you want to use. If you save the changes then this image will be processed twice when it comes to running the Batch.

- Go to FILE > AUTOMATE > BATCH.

- In the PLAY field, Choose your SET and then, in the ACTION field below, Choose the action you recorded (it will probably be chosen for you already).

- In the SOURCE menu choose ‘folder’ to apply this action to the folder that contains the images you want to batch process or choose ‘open images’ to apply it only to files you currently have opened in photoshop.

- In the DESTINATION menu you can choose ‘save and close’ which will open the images, apply the action, overwrite save them and then close them. If you want to keep the original images (almost always a good idea), choose ‘Folder’ in the destination drop-down menu and then click the “choose” button below to tell PS where to save the altered images.

Underneath, there is a range of extension option if you want to add the date or a number to the end of the new filenames. If you don’t want to remember the files, just leave it at the default setting.

- Click OK

When you run the batch, it will open each image one at a time, apply all the commands in order, save the image to the specified folder and then close it. Depending on the size of the images and the amount of actions you’ve applied, this can take a while and photoshop is unusable while it’s doing it so go and make a cup of tea or something.

Type Layer

1. Select the type tool and click on the image. This creates a new type layer. Use the keyboard to enter text once the cursor appears. The type tool can be used in combination with vectors to make type on a path and with shapes to make text in a shape.

2. Select the type and click and drag on the image. This creates a new type layer and creates a text box that will contain the text that is entered. Use the keyboard to enter text once the cursor appears.

1. Select any of the new fill layer submenu options from the layer menu (Solid Color, Gradient, Pattern). A new Layer dialog will open. Allowing you to change Name, Clipping, color, mode and opacity, Once you accept the new layer option by clicking OK, a function dialog will appear as appropriate.

2. Select any of the fill layer options from the create new adjustment or appear in the Adjustments dialog.

3. Select the shape tool, then be sure the shape layers option is selected on the option bar (Use mouse tool tip to find the button for the option). Click and drag on the image.

1. Select one of the new Adjustment layer submenu options from the layer menu (including Levels, Hue / saturation, invert, etc.). a new layer and capacity. Once you accept the new layer option by clicking OK, the Adjustment layer options will appear in the Adjustments dialog.

2. Choose any of the Adjustment layer options from the create new Adjustment of fill layer menu off the layers palette, the Adjustments palette. The adjustment layer options will appear in the adjustments dialog.
