Barcelona midfielder is the second-highest valued absentee at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Barcelona midfielder is the second-highest valued absentee at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Barcelona midfielder is the second-highest valued absentee at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Barcelona’s players dominate Luis de la Fuente’s side in the Spanish national team squad called up for the FIFA World Cup, but the contingent is still missing one big name.

While Joan Garcia, Pedri, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi, and even Gavi and Eric Garcia received call-ups, the big name who was left out of the event was Fermin Lopez.

The midfielder’s exclusion from the competition, however, had nothing to do with the manager’s decision but an unfortunate metatarsal fracture in Barcelona’s final La Liga game. Had he been fit, he would have certainly been in the United States for the event.

The second most valuable player to be out

As reported byMundo Deportivoin a recent update, Fermin is not just any regular player who is not at the premier event but one of the biggest names missing out.

In terms of market value in world football, there is only one player globally to have a valuation higher than the Barcelona star who is also not at the event.

At the moment, the midfielder is valued at a staggering €100 million, and only PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia valued at €140 million stands ahead of him as a higher valued player missing out on the World Cup.

Notably, however, the Georgian international is out of the event because his nation did not qualify.

Among the other top players on the same valuation as Fermin to miss out on the event are Cole Palmer and Dominik Szoboszlai. The former did not make the cut to join the national team while the latter’s nation did not qualify.

A stellar year

Fermin Lopez, with his valuation, is among the 15 highest valued players in world football at the moment and his numbers last season played a massive role in skyrocketing his value.

The player, after all, racked up 13 goals and 17 assists for Barcelona last season in 48 games. He is virtually a non-negotiable starter for Hansi Flick in big games, although Dani Olmo is a strong contender for the same starting spot.

Missing out on the big event through injury is indeed a massive blow for the La Masia graduate, but he will look to come back stronger and continue his dominance next season.

Atletico Madrid Eye Third Attempt to Sign Aleix García for €25m

Atletico Madrid Eye Third Attempt to Sign Aleix García for €25m: Atletico Madrid Eye Third Attempt to Sign Aleix García for €25m

Diario AS report that Atletico Madrid have revived their interest in Aleix García (28), the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder who has been on Los Colchoneros’ midfield shortlist for over a year. Director Mateu Alemany is understood to be managing the target list, with García identified as a realistic and relatively affordable option in what is shaping up to be an active summer of recruitment at the Metropolitano.

This is not fresh interest so much as a renewed push. Atletico first pursued García during last season’s summer window and returned to the trail in January, only to fall short on both occasions. That the club has come back a third time suggests something more than casual scouting, though Diario AS stop short of reporting any formal offer has been lodged with Leverkusen at this stage.

García’s contract and reported asking price

García joined Leverkusen from Girona in the summer of 2024 for around €18 million, and the German club tied him down through to 2029. His market value is placed at around €20 million, with AS noting that Leverkusen would likely require approximately €25 million to sanction a sale. That figure sits well below other midfield targets Atletico are weighing up: the report names Morten Hjulmand – the Sporting CP and Denmark holding midfielder – as an alternative, with his price tag sitting closer to €45 million.

The gap between those two valuations gives a clear indication of where García sits in Atletico’s planning: an attainable, experienced option rather than a marquee statement signing. Whether Simeone sees that as a virtue or a ceiling will shape how seriously the pursuit develops.

A strong season justifies the interest

García had a thoroughly convincing 2025-26 campaign. He started 33 Bundesliga matches, featured in 12 Champions League games, and added five appearances in the German Cup – 50 official fixtures in total, accumulating 4,160 minutes, six goals, and eleven assists. Sofascore’s end-of-season data ranked him as the highest-rated midfielder in the Bundesliga, earning him inclusion in the league’s team of the season alongside Kimmich, Kane, and Olise.

That level of consistency across domestic and European competition is exactly the kind of profile Atletico would be targeting as a complement or replacement for Conor Gallagher in the centre of the park. García organises play efficiently, covers ground, and contributes directly to goals – qualities that suit the demands Simeone places on his midfielders.

García open to a return, but settled in Germany

The player’s own comments point to cautious openness rather than agitation for a move. Speaking to AS in February, García confirmed that contact had been made during the winter window: “Yes, I know there have been calls. But I always say that when it rings and nothing happens, it’s because it wasn’t meant to happen. And as I’m at Leverkusen, I’m delighted and I want to carry on.” Asked separately whether he could see himself playing for one of Spain’s three biggest clubs, he said: “I can see myself, yes. That’s clear. I know it’s complicated because they’re three of the biggest clubs in the world. Maybe they look for slightly younger profiles, but I can clearly see myself. I think I’m playing at a good level at Leverkusen, and if it ever came, it would be welcome.”

That framing – open but not pushing – is consistent with a player who has a long contract, genuine job satisfaction, and enough self-awareness to understand the competitive dynamics at clubs of that size. It does not read as a player engineering an exit.

What this means for Atletico Madrid’s summer

Atletico’s midfield recruitment this summer extends well beyond García. The club have also been in discussions over a City midfielder, and as previously covered on Football Espana, negotiations with Leverkusen over Alejandro Grimaldo are running in parallel – which means Atletico are already in active dialogue with the same German club they would need to approach formally for García. Whether that existing relationship smooths or complicates a second negotiation with Leverkusen remains to be seen.

The next meaningful development will be whether Atletico escalate from informal interest to a concrete offer, and whether Leverkusen hold firm at €25 million or are willing to move on a player who, at 28, offers them limited resale upside before his contract expires.

Report: Man United set to battle Arsenal in the race for 22-goal striker: Report: Man United set to battle Arsenal in the race for 22-goal striker

Manchester United Track Igor Thiago as Arsenal Join Transfer Race

Manchester United’s summer planning under Michael Carrick appears to be taking shape, with a new centre forward among the areas being assessed. According to RTI Esporte, United are monitoring Brentford striker Igor Thiago, with Arsenal also now involved in the race.

United’s immediate priority may still sit in central midfield, yet the need for another No 9 is clear. Rasmus Hojlund’s £38million permanent transfer to Napoli has been confirmed, while Joshua Zirkzee is also understood to be available. That leaves Benjamin Sesko requiring support, competition and, crucially, a different type of attacking presence.

Thiago’s profile naturally fits that discussion. The Brazilian was described as a “standout” Premier League performer last season after scoring 22 goals in 38 appearances. That return has carried him into Brazil’s World Cup squad and placed him firmly on the radar of bigger clubs.

Igor Thiago Valuation Creates Big Decision

RTI Esporte report that United are “monitoring” Thiago’s situation and considering whether to submit an offer for the striker, who is valued at €80million, around £69million.

That figure is significant. It reflects both Brentford’s strong negotiating position and the premium attached to Premier League proven forwards. For United, the decision will come down to whether Thiago is viewed as a genuine long term solution or simply one strong season away from becoming an expensive gamble.

Photo IMAGO

Carrick’s side need reliability in the final third. Sesko has clear potential, yet United cannot enter another campaign overly dependent on one central striker. Thiago’s goal return suggests he can handle English football, attack space aggressively and provide the penalty box presence United have lacked too often.

Arsenal Competition Raises Stakes

Arsenal’s involvement complicates matters. RTI Esporte claim Arsenal have “entered the race” and will provide United with “competition” for the 24-year-old.

That interest is logical. Arsenal are prepared to sell Gabriel Jesus and view Thiago as a possible option to compete with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres. For Thiago, the attraction of Champions League football, title contention and a defined attacking structure could be persuasive.

United, therefore, may need to move with clarity. This is not a market that rewards hesitation. If Carrick wants Thiago, United must decide quickly whether the price, role and project all align.

Transfer Battle Could Define Carrick’s Attack

What makes this situation interesting is not simply the name, but the direction it suggests. United appear to be looking for a striker who can contribute immediately, rather than another developmental project. Thiago is 24, battle tested in the Premier League and coming off a season that made clubs across Europe take notice.

There is risk at €80million. There always is. Yet United have spent heavily before without solving their attacking issues. This deal would need to be based on clear scouting conviction, tactical fit and Carrick’s belief that Thiago can elevate the side rather than merely add depth.

For Arsenal, this may be opportunistic. For United, it could become necessary. With Hojlund gone and Zirkzee potentially following, Thiago may soon shift from option to priority.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United perspective, this is exactly the type of report that feels both exciting and slightly nerve wracking. Igor Thiago scored 22 goals in the Premier League, so this is not a mystery punt from abroad. He has done it in England, in a Brentford side where chances are not always flowing freely.

That matters. United have bought potential before and waited for it to become production. Under Michael Carrick, the squad needs more certainty. Benjamin Sesko may still become the main man, yet asking him to carry the entire attack would be unfair and, frankly, risky.

Thiago would bring power, directness and penalty box instinct. He looks like the sort of striker United fans would warm to quickly, especially if Carrick wants more intensity from the front. The concern is the fee. €80million is serious money, and one excellent season should still be examined carefully.

Arsenal being involved makes this more urgent. United cannot afford to spend weeks admiring the player while a rival builds the deal. If Thiago is genuinely the target, the club need to act decisively. If not, they must move on quickly.

Cds: Roma in a hurry to sign Greenwood while Milan star Pulisic offered: Cds: Roma in a hurry to sign Greenwood while Milan star Pulisic offered

Corriere dello Sport reports that Roma directors want to secure Mason Greenwood’s signature by the end of June, so they’ll send a formal proposal to Marseille next week, while Milan star Christian Pulisic has been offered to the Giallorossi.

Roma are eager to strengthen their attacking department for 2026-27 regardless of Paulo Dybala’s future at the Stadio Olimpico.

Greenwood’s potential Roma tranasfer: latest news

According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma are determined to send an offer to Marseille for Greenwood next week.

The English winger is valued at €55m, but the French side need to make a big-money sale by the end of the month to comply with FFP regulations, so Roma will push for an agreement in the coming weeks.

According to the report, the opening Giallorossi offer will be worth €40m, including add-ons, plus a substantial sell-on clause.

Corriere dello Sport claims that Roma want to initially sign Greenwood on a €5m deal plus an obligation to buy for €25m and €10m in guaranteed add-ons.

The Giallorossi have already held talks with Greenwood’s father and agent and the ex-Manchester United winger is very much open to moving to the Stadio Olimpico.

Another option for Roma is Milan star Pulisic who has reportedly been offered to the Giallorossi.

Manchester City defensive target edges closer to contract renewal with Premier League rivals

Man City target Pedro Porro close to a new Tottenham contract until 2030
The right-back had been monitored by City as a potential summer addition
Spurs view Porro as non-transferable under manager Roberto De Zerbi

Man City target Pedro Porro is reportedly close to agreeing a long-term contract with Tottenham, dealing a blow to the Hugo Viana’s pursuit of the right-back.

City had registered interest in re-signing Porro this summer as they sought competition and support for Matheus Nunes in the right-back position, with the Tottenham defender having been on the club’s books between 2019-22 without making a senior appearance.

The 26-year-old has been described as a player City director of football Hugo Viana is “a huge fan” of. However, Tottenham had already drawn a line in the sand over Porro, with manager Roberto De Zerbi viewing the Spaniard as non-transferable.

Tottenham hand Manchester City transfer blow over defensive target

It is understood that the north London club setting a baseline fee of £50 million to even open talks. A new long-term deal would now end any realistic hope of a City move.

Report: Porro closing in on Tottenham deal until 2030

As reported by The Athletic’s Seb Stafford-Bloor, Porro is close to agreeing a long-term contract with Tottenham that would run until 2030, all but ending Manchester City‘s interest in a reunion with the Spaniard this summer.

The development is a significant one for City, who had viewed Porro’s Premier League experience, attacking quality and familiarity with the demands of the role as an ideal fit for the right-back position under incoming manager Enzo Maresca.

Spurs had been keen to tie Porro down to fresh terms for some time, with the defender’s previous deal due to expire in 2028 and the 26-year-old in line for a significant pay rise given his importance to De Zerbi’s setup.

A contract until 2030 removes Porro from the market entirely, forcing Viana to turn his full attention to alternative right-back targets as he looks to reinforce the position ahead of the new season.

What does this mean for City’s right-back search?

City have been monitoring a number of options in the right-back department, with Atalanta’s Marco Palestra and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read among the younger, specialist profiles under consideration this summer.

From Italy: Atalanta defender reaches Manchester City agreement on personal terms

The pursuit of Palestra in particular has gathered pace, with City understood to be ready to make an offer for the Italy international as Atalanta hold out for a fee in the region of €50 million amid competition from Inter Milan.

Porro’s impending renewal removes the most experienced option from City’s shortlist, leaving Viana to focus on the longer-term profiles that have always represented the more realistic and strategically sound route to addressing the position.

With Nunes having impressed and exceeded expectations when deputising at right-back last season, City are under no pressure to overpay – and the collapse of the Porro option is unlikely to derail what remains a carefully planned approach to strengthening the role.

Real Madrid new signing set to be made official after the World Cup – report

Real Madrid new signing set to be made official after the World Cup – report: Real Madrid new signing set to be made official after the World Cup – report

Real Madrid have made some key strides in their squad-building over the past week or so, notably confirming Jose Mourinho as the new coach.

The Spanish giants are also slated to bring in three new players in Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva.

Konate and Silva are expected to join on a free transfer, with the deal for the former being finalised a long time ago.

According to journalist Andi Onrubia (h/t Madrid Zone), Ibrahima Konate will sign for Real Madrid after the World Cup, with the formalities of his arrival set to be completed once his international commitments with France have concluded.

The French centre-back has been one of Florentino Perez’s priority targets all summer, and his arrival was effectively confirmed during the presidential election campaign when Perez named him as his first defensive recruit.

Konate leaves Liverpool as a free agent after five seasons at Anfield, and his signing could go a long way in adding more depth to the backline that has already lost Dani Carvajal and David Alaba.

A deal already agreed

Konate has already put pen to paper on a contract running until 2030, with all terms agreed between the player and the club ahead of the official announcement.

The deal has the full backing of incoming manager Jose Mourinho, and an official confirmation is expected to follow once the World Cup is over.

The defender will slot into a centre-back group that already includes Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen.

Endorsement from Mbappe

The signing has been warmly received within the squad, with Kylian Mbappe among those to publicly welcome his international teammate.

Speaking recently, the Real Madrid forward delivered an endorsement of Konate, describing him as an aggressive, tactically flexible defender of the kind he loves having in his team.

Konate’s move also strengthens the growing French core at the Bernabeu, with the defender set to join compatriots Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy in the dressing room.

BBC Sport pundits choose England World Cup XIs - who would you pick?

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 14 Jun 2026 12:23:46 +0000

BBC Sport pundits choose England World Cup XIs - who would you pick?:

As Thomas Tuchel's side countdown to their opening game against Croatia on 17 June (21:00 BST), BBC Sport pundits have chosen their starting XI for their first World Cup game in Dallas.

Would you start Manchester City defensive duo, Marc Guehi and John Stones or would you pair one of those players with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa?

Jude Bellingham will wear the number 10 shirt for the World Cup, but will he have a starting shirt in the Three Lions' opening game?

You can make your selection too and share it with friends.

Micah Richards - Former England defender

[BBC]

It is an easy pick, Jordan Pickford as the goalkeeper. I would start Reece James, if he is fully fit.

I would go with John Stones instead of Ezri Konsa, even though Konsa has been really reliable. I just believe on the ball at international football Stones can dictate and if we need to keep the ball in a game, he is one that can certainly do that.

Guehi starting is self-explanatory. He has been excellent for Crystal Palace and Manchester City this season. At left-back, Nico O'Reilly. I know Djed Spence started at their in the friendly against New Zealand, but if I had to pick one it would definitely be O'Reilly.

Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice - pretty much what everyone expects. I like Anderson because he can also start attacks. I know he is in there to break up play, but when he plays the ball through the lines he plays it with really good quality.

Rice, we all know why he starts. Jude Bellingham, I would start him ahead of Morgan Rogers in a number 10 position because he is a big game player. I think he is a genuine superstar. I think there is two genuine stars in him and Harry Kane.

I would go with Marcus Rashford over Anthony Gordon, but I wouldn't mind putting Rogers there as well.

Bukayo Saka speaks for himself and then Harry Kane is obviously upfront.

Joe Hart - Former England goalkeeper

[BBC]

I hate doing stuff like this... I have picked this XI as I think it is the most well-balanced team to set the tournament up.

By no way, shape or form do I think that this squad will play every game. The squad has such an important role to play.

I think it is a balanced team. You could change seven of those because the squad is so good.

I love them all, and I want them all to do well.

Steph Houghton - Former England captain

[BBC]

Alan Shearer - Former England forward

[BBC]

Paul Robinson - Former England goalkeeper

[BBC]

I think Jude Bellingham has shown in the past two warm-up games why he should start for England. It is so close between him and Morgan Rogers.

I fully expect John Stones to play, but I would actually go with Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi at the back, but so many of the others pick themselves.

South Korea come from behind to beat Czech Republic

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 13 Jun 2026 13:22:56 +0000

South Korea come from behind to beat Czech Republic:

FIFA World Cup

South Korea 2 - 1 Czech Republic FT

South Korea came from behind to defeat Czech Republic 2-1 as substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winning goal in the 80th minute of their World Cup opener.

Son Heung-min and company had dominated the game against the Czechs, who did not have a shot on target until their captain Ladislav Krejci rose to head home a long throw from Vladimir Coufal for the opening goal in the 59th minute.

Former Tottenham forward Son, captaining his nation, had five of South Korea's eight efforts in the first half, and his biggest chance was blocked by goalkeeper Matej Kovar shortly after the interval.

But Feyenoord defensive midfielder Hwang In-beom inspired South Korea's fightback when he equalised only eight minutes after the Czech opener by defender Krejci, who spent last season on loan at Wolves.

Found inside the box by the lively Lee Kang-in, Hwang deceived Kovar, who had rushed off his line, as he faked to shoot before scooping the ball over the Czech keeper and into an unguarded goal to make it 1-1.

South Korea thought they had been undone by another Czech set-piece in the 78th minute as Tomas Soucek nodded home a free-kick from the left, but Hong Myung-bo's side were handed a reprieve as the goal was ruled out for offside.

And their supporters at Estadio Guadalajara were soon celebrating as their side took the lead, with Besiktas forward Oh tapping home a cross from Hwang to complete the turnaround.

But the famous win was only sealed courtesy of keeper Kim Seung-gyu, who produced a brilliant low stop to block Adam Hlozek's close-range effort in the 82nd minute and also denied Michal Sadilek in stoppage time.

It is the first time in four editions of the World Cup that South Korea have made a winning start to their campaign.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino was among the spectators in Guadalajara, where Fifa said the capacity would be 45,664 for the four games it will be hosting.

The attendance was announced as 44,985 although there were rows of empty seats, not just in the most expensive sections on halfway but around the stadium.

Fifa has been criticised for its ticket policy for the World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the tournament organisers accused of "artificially inflating prices" and "misleading fans".

Speaking on Wednesday, Infantino defended the pricing structure as "accurate" for the North American market, insisting that demand had been "unprecedented by a factor of 10 or more".

Son makes way before winner

For many years Son has been South Korea's talisman, scoring 56 goals from 145 appearances.

He holds the record for most games for the national team and needs two goals to draw level with Cha Bum-kun as their all-time leading scorer.

The 33-year-old, who left Spurs to join MLS side LAFC in August 2025, is playing in his fourth World Cup and linked seamlessly with Lee Kang-in and Lee Jae-sung to create a host of first-half chances.

Son had one shot deflected over before sending two strikes from outside the box off-target. He then failed to connect properly when stretching for a return ball in the box.

His clearest opportunity came early in the second half, when he tried to lift the ball over Kovar but did not get enough on it.

Son was replaced two minutes after South Korea's equaliser having failed to add to his three World Cup goals, and it was his replacement, ex-Celtic striker Oh, who claimed the winner on his World Cup bow.

What's next for these teams?

Czech Republic will next face South Africa on Thursday, 18 June (17:00 BST) while South Korea take on World Cup co-hosts Mexico, who beat South Africa 2-0 in their first match, on Friday, 19 June (02:00 BST).

Clint Dempsey, the US men’s national team’s joint all-time leading scorer, has fired back at Jesse Marsch after the Canada coach suggested that American players had to be begged to sing the Star-Spangled Banner.

Speaking to reporters this week before Canada’s World Cup opener – a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday in Toronto – Marsch was praising the pride of his own team when he drew a comparison with US players. Marsch was an assistant for the USMNT from 2010 to 2011, including at the World Cup in South Africa, and became the first American to manage Canada when he was appointed two years ago.

“In the US sometimes we had to beg players to sing the national anthem,” Marsch said on Thursday. “These guys belt it out to the top of their lungs because they want to show the country how proud they are to be here, to be Canadians and to represent what Canada is.”

Dempsey, who is at the World Cup as an analyst for Fox Sports, had choice words in response.

“He really said that?” Dempsey said in a pregame show before Canada’s match. “Man, I can’t take this guy too seriously. It was an honor for me growing up and represent my country. When the national anthem happened, I wasn’t someone who normally would sing. I put my hand over my heart, and I’d pray to the good man upstairs. I’m someone who’s bled for this country. I broke my nose playing for this country. I’ve come back from two heart procedures and played for this country.

“I’m not going to take advice from someone who switched to the other side and is singing another country’s national anthem. And as my boy [Thierry Henry] would say, stay in your own lane. It looks like he’s in a dang moped, so worry about your own team.”

When Gregg Berhalter’s contract as USMNT coach expired after the 2022 World Cup, Marsch was considered a frontrunner for the job following his exit from Leeds United. Instead, the US Soccer Federation hired Berhalter again. Marsch, who also made two appearances for the US as a player, has said he “wasn’t treated very well” by US Soccer during its manager search.

Dempsey played for the US at the 2010 World Cup, when Marsch was an assistant on Bob Bradley’s staff. He is tied with Landon Donovan atop the USMNT’s all-time goals list with 57.

The US opened their World Cup against Paraguay in Los Angeles on Friday. Canada will face Qatar in their second game on 18 June.

Former Man United manager Ruben Amorim now in contention for AC Milan job

Former Man United manager Ruben Amorim now in contention for AC Milan job: Former Man United manager Ruben Amorim now in contention for AC Milan job

Ruben Amorim is among the names being considered for the AC Milan job, but another former Premier League boss is also on their shortlist.

According to The Mirror, the former Manchester United manager has emerged as one of several candidates in the running for the vacant job.

Amorim was relieved of his duties back in January, bringing to an end his underwhelming spell at Old Trafford. That ill-fated spell came after a highly successful period at Sporting CP.

His success at Sporting helped bolster his reputation as one of the finest young managers in Europe.

Amorim has been out of work for six months but could now land a gig at one of Europe’s most decorated clubs, with Milan looking for a new manager and preparing to make contact with several candidates.

They axed Massimiliano Allegri after a disappointing end to the 2025/26 Serie A campaign and have several options on their radar.

While they’re exploring a deal for Amorim, Milan are also keeping tabs on Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who will leave Selhurst Park this summer.

The Austrian will leave Palace as a legend after overseeing the most successful spell in the club’s history, guiding the Eagles to the FA Cup, Community Shield, and the Europa Conference League.

He leaves as the club’s most successful manager of all time, and his exploits in South London mean he will not be short on offers this summer.

Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle is also in contention for the Milan job after winning consecutive league titles with Red Bull Salzburg before heading to Saudi Arabia.

He has managed to pick up where he left off, winning the Saudi Cup and the AFC Champions League Elite title twice.

Milan’s summer of upheaval comes after a shocking finale to the season. They failed to qualify for the Champions League following a final-day 2-1 defeat against Cagliari.

Messi, Maradona or Pele? Ranking the top 10 World Cup legends

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 11 Jun 2026 07:34:18 +0000

[BBC]

It's a daunting task. Trying to whittle down thousands of players from 22 tournaments spread over almost a century to pick the top 10 World Cup legends of all time.

To my mind, the top six or seven are obvious - even if the order is debatable - but it's those who fill the remaining spots that will no doubt spark the biggest talking point.

It's hard to leave out Miroslav Klose, for example, although for what it's worth the top goalscorer in World Cup history would come in a close 11th.

There's no room for Garrincha either, the dazzling bowlegged Brazilian winger, or Roberto Baggio, a true Italian icon, and France striker Just Fontaine, who netted 13 in the 1958 tournament alone.

Some of the game's greats such as Dutch icon Johan Cruyff, Portugal striker Eusebio and Germany's goalscoring machine Gerd Muller miss out too - perhaps a top 20 would've made this easier? - while the collective beauty of Spain's 2010 vintage means no individual is on the list.

So who does make it?! Well, I've picked my top 10 below - those most synonymous with the tournament. You can have your say in the comments, too.

10. Sir Geoff Hurst, England, World Cup winner 1966

We all know the story. Hurst wasn't supposed to play as England's star striker Jimmy Greaves, injured in the group stages, was returning to fitness for the 1966 final against West Germany and the clamour was for him to start at Wembley.

But Sir Alf Ramsey stuck with the man who only made his international debut a few months earlier, and the rest is history. West Ham forward Hurst scored a fabulous hat-trick as the Three Lions clinched the game's grandest prize for the only time in their history - and on home soil.

Hurst was by no means the most talented or iconic player in that team, but you cannot discount a hat-trick in the showpiece - that's a legendary feat only matched by France's Kylian Mbappe four years ago in Qatar, and he was on the losing side.

9. Cafu, Brazil, World Cup winner 1994 & 2002

We'll give Kevin Bridges the assist for this one. If you've not seen his 'In Search of the Beautiful Game' yet then it's well worth digging out on iPlayer.

The comedian swaps Clydebank for the Copacabana in search of 'jogo bonito' and meets the legendary Cafu - the only man to appear in three successive World Cup finals.

The marauding full-back came off the bench when Brazil trumped Italy on penalties at the Rose Bowl in 1994, was a beaten finalist in France four years later and then lifted the trophy as captain at Japan and South Korea in 2002.

Cafu is World Cup royalty, only Klose boasts more than his 16 wins across four tournaments, but also a legend who remembers his roots - "100% Jardim Irene" he scribbled on his canary yellow shirt before lifting the trophy in 2002, a message to the Sao Paulo favela where he grew up.

8. Paolo Rossi, Italy, World Cup winner 1982

Rossi's World Cup fairytale began against Brazil in one of the tournament's all-time iconic matches - sweat-drenched Azzurri blue against the vibrant yellow of the favourites, a classic played out to a backbeat of buzzing horns in Barcelona.

Italy's strength was meant to be their defence, but Rossi proved the hat-trick hero - netting twice in the first half and grabbing the winner in the second.

Those were also the striker's first Italy goals since returning from a two-year ban following a match-fixing scandal earlier that year - something he always denied - but they would not be the last.

The penalty-box predator grabbed both in a semi-final win against Poland, and then scored the opener as Italy dispatched West Germany 3-1 in the final at the Bernabeu to win a first World Cup since 1938.

Rossi's six goals earned him the tournament Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards, as well as the World Player of the Year prize.

7. Zinedine Zidane, France, World Cup winner 1998

With chants of "Zidane president!", the image of Zidane and message "Merci, Zizou" lit up the Arc de Triomphe as more than a million joyous fans crammed on to the Champs-Élysees to celebrate France's World Cup success in 1998.

Zidane, a second-generation Algerian immigrant raised in the concrete high rises of northern Marseille, was the talisman and face of a multi-cultural Les Bleus team that finally delivered the globe's biggest footballing prize.

"We realised Zidane was the player who was going to make the difference," France defender Lilian Thuram told me.

The majestic midfielder's World Cup legacy is a cocktail of important goals, balletic brilliance and hot-headed red cards. France's 2006 final defeat by Italy is of course remembered for Zidane headbutting Marco Materazzi. But he also missed two matches in '98 after being sent off in the group stages against Saudi Arabia.

He returned for the quarter-final, guiding France past Italy and then Croatia, before delivering a masterclass in the final against Brazil, scoring twice - both headers from corners - to spark wild celebrations in Paris.

6. Kylian Mbappe, France, World Cup winner 2018

Mbappe's World Cup legend is still being written. At 27, and with potentially two or even three more tournaments to come, the France superstar could well be challenging at the top of this list by the time he retires.

The striker excelled in Russia as a 19-year-old in 2018 - France's youngest ever scorer, the first teenager to score twice in a knockout game since Pele in 1958 with his last-16 double against Argentina, and then the first teenager since Pele to score in a final as Les Bleus beat Croatia.

Mbappe's career has arguably peaked at World Cups. Prolific with Paris St-Germain and now Real Madrid, but unable to land a Champions League with either, it's with France on the biggest stage where he has shone the most.

His performance against Argentina in the 2022 final alone - scoring a scintillating hat-trick - was worthy of winning the game's biggest prize for a second time. It's just that he was up against Lionel Messi and co…

5. Franz Beckenbauer, West Germany, World Cup winner 1974 (and 1990 as head coach of Germany)

Runner-up in 1966 and third place four years later. Franz Beckenbauer finally got his hands on the World Cup in 1974, captaining West Germany to victory over the much-fancied Netherlands.

Beckenbauer, the elegant ball-playing defender, led the hosts in thwarting the Total Football of Cruyff's side - the very style of play that influenced his own game - even after his side fell behind to a second-minute penalty having not yet touched the ball.

That would be his third and final edition as a player, but Der Kaiser returned in the dugout to lead his country to successive finals.

West Germany were beaten by Argentina in 1986, but four years later Beckenbauer became the only man to win the World Cup as a player and a manager when his side earned revenge on La Albiceleste in Italy.

4. Lionel Messi, Argentina, World Cup winner 2022

It looked like it might not happen for either of the best players of a generation, possibly the best of all time.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were deep into their 30s without a World Cup triumph between them, and the Argentina icon was staring at an early exit in Qatar after a shock opening defeat by Saudi Arabia.

But in his fifth tournament, Messi - having led Argentina to the 2014 final - turned his team's fate on its head. A goal and assist against Mexico followed, before he scored against Australia in the last 16, a penalty in the quarter-final tie with the Netherlands and another from the spot against Croatia in the semi-finals.

Messi was inspired once more in a classic final against France. The diminutive magician scored twice, taking his goal total for the tournament to seven, before converting in the shootout as Argentina clinched a first World Cup since Diego Maradona's heroics in 1986.

3. Ronaldo, Brazil, World Cup winner 1994 & 2002

A tale famously of redemption. Like Cafu, striker Ronaldo was in the squad when Brazil won the World Cup in 1994 but, aged just 17, did not make an appearance.

Four years later, he was at his blistering best, an unstoppable blend of pace, skill and ruthless finishing heralding him the best player on the planet.

He scored four goals as Brazil reached the final but a seizure before the match - and the resulting confusion of whether he would play or not - meant the prolific striker looked far from himself as the Selecao were well beaten by France.

The years before his next World Cup in 2002 were blighted by a serious knee injury, Ronaldo barely featuring for Inter Milan or Brazil and his inclusion at the tournament in doubt.

But in Japan and South Korea he was able to rekindle flashes of brilliance, scoring eight times including twice in the final against Germany to banish the painful memories of Paris.

Ronaldo took his World Cup total to a then-record 15 in the Germany edition four years later.

2. Diego Maradona, Argentina, World Cup winner 1986

He comes in at number two here, but there is no one more box office than Maradona - a statement epitomised by his World Cup summers.

Left at home as a tender 17-year-old in 1978, when Argentina beat the Netherlands to win their first World Cup, Maradona's first taste of football's biggest event came four years later, when the flamboyant forward was sent off for retaliating as the holders crashed out in a bruising encounter with Brazil.

Maradona's defining summer would come in Mexico in 1986. What is arguably the best individual tournament in history is remembered most vividly for his two goals against England in the quarter-final.

The first was the infamous 'Hand of God' moment. The second, an act of pure genius - a daring dribble from his own half leaving England players velcroed to the Azteca turf, before grounding and rounding goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

He scored twice again in the semi-final against Belgium, before captaining Argentina to victory over West Germany in the final - finishing the tournament with five goals and as many assists.

A tearful Maradona's Argentina side were beaten finalists in 1990, and four years later El Pibe de Oro (The Golden Boy) ended his World Cup with the typical drama and scandal that seemed to hang on to him like a shadow - sent home after testing positive for banned substances in the group stages.

1. Pele, Brazil, World Cup winner 1958, 1962 & 1970.

Who else but the great Pele? The only man to win three World Cups, all in different decades and, for generations, the most iconic name in the sport.

Having famously told his father he would win him the World Cup after Brazil's shock defeat by Uruguay at the Maracana in 1950, Pele was only 17 when he burst into the footballing world's consciousness in 1958 with a semi-final hat-trick against France and two more in the final success over Sweden.

He was part of the Brazil squad that retained the trophy four years later, but missed most of the tournament through injury after scoring in the opening game - only later receiving a winners' medal. In 1966, as the world's greatest player, he was on the end of such rough treatment he vowed to never play in the tournament again.

Come 1970, though, Pele was back. Carrying the weight of his nation in Mexico, the forward was at his skilful, creative, innovative best, dazzling in yellow as the Selecao reached the final in style and then thrashed Italy 4-1 in the showpiece, Pele scoring the first and setting up two others.

Pele, of course, is the most legendary World Cup star of all time.

Strasbourg manager Gary O’Neil on Ipswich Town shortlist: Strasbourg manager Gary O’Neil on Ipswich Town shortlist

Gary O’Neil is a contender to replace Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, as per a report from BBC Sport.

O’Neil only arrived at RC Strasbourg Alsace in January. The former AFC Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager replaced Liam Rosenior, who departed to join fellow BlueCo-owned club Chelsea.

Having replaced Rosenior, O’Neil took Strasbourg to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France and the UEFA Europa Conference League, however, a poor end to the season means that – barring Olympique de Marseille’s exclusion from European competition – Le Racing won’t compete in Europe next season.

The Englishman may not even still be at the Meinau. McKenna revealed that he would be taking a step back from football. His exit was confirmed on Wednesday evening. O’Neil is a contender for the role, BBC Sport understands. L’Équipe add that he may even be the priority for the Tractor Boys, newly promoted to the Premier League but now without a manager.

PSG target Bayern Munichs’s Michael Olise: PSG target Bayern Munichs’s Michael Olise

Paris Saint-Germain are set to try to sign Michael Olise (24) during the summer transfer window, according to reports in L’Équipe.

Although declared unsellable by his chairman, Herbert Hainer, the French forward, who is preparing to play in his first World Cup with Les Bleus, has been the subject of transfer rumours for the past few days.

Whilst Olise’s name was recently linked with Real Madrid, the time has now come for the reigning double European champions to join the fray. Based on the French daily’s report, a sense of optimism regarding the positive outcome of this deal is even said to be emanating from the Parisian management.

Having enjoyed a remarkable season with Bayern Munich, which he finished with 22 goals and 31 assists across all competitions and a domestic treble, the London-born player could still be in for a busy summer, despite a contract that runs until 2029.

Angelino makes pact with Gasperini ahead of next season

Angelino makes pact with Gasperini ahead of next season: Angelino makes pact with Gasperini ahead of next season

It’s been a nightmare season for Angelino.

The Spanish full-back has had physical problems that have kept him out of Gasperini’s hands for almost the entire season.

Born in 1997, he started the first five league games and then played about 35 minutes in all competitions until the end of the season.

Roma has many doubts about his fitness, which is why the club is looking for wingers to strengthen Gasperini’s squad.

There’s a wait to see what Angelino’s future holds.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reports, the Spanish full-back has been given a talk: he’ll go on retreat, but in the first 15-20 days he’ll have to prove he’s back to his old self, otherwise he’ll have to say goodbye and ultimately be sold.

A clear agreement, however, is pushing Roma to look around and consider several full-backs.

Aston Villa Have To Pay €25-35m For Their Brazilian Target: Should Unai Emery Accept?

Aston Villa Have To Pay €25-35m For Their Brazilian Target: Should Unai Emery Accept?: Aston Villa Have To Pay €25-35m For Their Brazilian Target: Should Unai Emery Accept?

Aston Villa are preparing to open formal talks with Galatasaray over the signing of Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara, as the newly crowned Europa League winners gear up for a return to Champions League football. The Villans have tracked him for months, and this summer the interest has turned concrete.

Aston Villa Close In on Gabriel Sara as Galatasaray’s Asking Price Firms Up

Sara posted 11 goal contributions in 42 games this season, and his non-penalty expected goals rank in the top 81st percentile of Süper Lig players, while his creative output places him in the top 6% of all midfielders in the league. Those numbers don’t lie. The 26-year-old previously spent two seasons in the EFL Championship with Norwich City before earning a move to Galatasaray in 2024, so English football holds no mystery for him.

Aston Villa Face Napoli Competition in Three-Way Race

A Spor, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an update from journalist Nevzat Dindar. Villa, Everton, and Tottenham are all keen on him from the Premier League, with Napoli also gunning for him from Serie A. Unai Emery, though, appears to hold a real advantage.

The Brazilian international has reportedly responded positively to Villa’s interest, and given that he’d be stepping directly into Champions League football at Villa Park, that preference makes complete sense. Villa officials even used the club’s Europa League final trip to Istanbul to push forward talks in person, a level of proactive intent that Napoli simply haven’t matched yet.

Galatasaray’s position is equally transparent. The Turkish champions are considering Sara as a sale option to raise the funds needed to sign Juventus midfielder Khéphren Thuram, with the asking price set between €30m and €35m. The Istanbul club wants to offload Sara for €30–35m and use that money to pursue Thuram, for whom Juventus are demanding around €50m. It’s a calculated domino effect: sell one midfielder, replace him with a younger Frenchman. Clean in theory. Messy in practice, given how many clubs want Sara.

Aston Villa Must Navigate PSR Scrutiny Alongside Transfer Push

KIRKBY, ENGLAND – MARCH 17: Gabriel Sara of Galatasaray A.S. speaks to the media during a press conference ahead of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Round of 16 Second Leg match between Liverpool and Galatasaray A.S. at AXA Training Centre on March 17, 2026 in Kirkby, England. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

Recent reports from June 2026 indicate Galatasaray holds a minimum asking price of €35m for Sara, though some outlets suggest they could accept closer to €30m depending on how quickly a deal moves. Villa find themselves on a financial tightrope, while €30m is a fair starting point, the club’s Profit and Sustainability Rules status means every pound spent this summer carries added scrutiny.

Sara himself holds considerable leverage here. His contract runs until June 2029, so he isn’t going anywhere under pressure. He can sit tight, assess every offer, and choose based on the sporting project he actually believes in, not desperation. Villa ended their season with a fourth-placed finish and a Europa League triumph, and Emery is now actively looking to strengthen the squad ahead of a campaign back in the Champions League. For a player of Sara’s ambitions, that backdrop matters enormously.

His desire to test himself in the English top flight has come to light during the course of this transfer saga, and with Aston Villa out in front of their rivals, the next move belongs to the clubs making formal bids. Galatasaray won’t wait indefinitely. They need Sara’s sale to fund Thuram, and their patience has a timeline attached to it.

Massara linked with Lecce after Roma exit

Massara linked with Lecce after Roma exit: Massara linked with Lecce after Roma exit

After leaving Roma in recent weeks, sporting director Frederic Massara could soon return to work at another team. Lecce, after securing safety last season, is continuing to reorganize its management structure.

In the last few hours, Frederic Massara’s name has emerged among the candidates being evaluated by the Salento club to strengthen their transfer market for next season.

According to Marco Conterio, there has already been initial exploratory contact between the parties.

At the moment, there are no official meetings or advanced negotiations, but the manager remains one of the club’s most popular candidates.

🚨 Lower wages than at Benfica! Mourinho signs for Real

🚨 Lower wages than at Benfica! Mourinho signs for Real: 🚨 Lower wages than at Benfica! Mourinho signs for Real

The sparrows had been chirping it from the rooftops for quite some time, and now Benfica have made it official: José Mourinho is returning to Madrid and will be the new old coach of Los Blancos.

Re-elected president Florentino Pérez had already announced this spectacular return in the event of an election victory. According to an official statement from Mourinho’s now former club Benfica, Real had to put around 15 million euros on the table to buy the 63-year-old Portuguese coach out of his contract, which was set to run until 2027.

Mourinho thus becomes the successor to Àlvaro Arbeloa, who took over the team last season after Alonso was dismissed.

What makes Mourinho’s new contract particularly explosive, after having already coached Real between 2010 and 2013: he is reportedly set to earn significantly less than he did at Benfica.

Sport Bild reports this, citing information from insider Ramon Alvarez de Mon. According to the report, Real have prepared a two-year contract with an option for a third year.

The coach is expected to earn around twelve million euros gross per season.

At Benfica, according to Portuguese media, Mourinho earned 16 million euros gross in his first year, and in the second year, which would have started this summer, he would even have received 18 million euros gross. Mourinho himself denied those figures at the time, however.

Still, if the information is even close to correct, it means Mourinho is giving up a considerable amount in salary to make this comeback possible.

We’re very excited to see whether he can lead Real Madrid back to more regal heights. What do you think? Is the right coach now sitting on the bench in Madrid? Feel free to write it in the comments!

Why England missed out on automatic World Cup spot

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 10 Jun 2026 05:52:50 +0000

Why England missed out on automatic World Cup spot: England's only defeat was away from home against world champions Spain [Getty Images]

England beat Ukraine 3-0 on Tuesday night, but it did not matter what they did as automatic qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup was out of their hands.

The Lionesses needed Iceland to do them a favour in the other group match, but Spain showed their superiority in Reykjavik with a thumping 6-1 victory.

It means Sarina Wiegman's back-to-back Euros winners are heading for the play-offs, while defending world champions Spain have booked their place at next year's global tournament in Brazil.

Spain topped the League A3 group thanks to a better head-to-head record against England, who finished runners-up.

They both had home wins against each other, but England's was a 1-0 victory while Spain enjoyed a 4-0 win on Friday against below-par visitors.

"The competition in Europe is really high," said Wiegman.

"What I'm disappointed about is that we win five games, we have 15 points and we're in a group with the world champions and then you can't qualify.

"I'm happy with the performance tonight - but not the result of us having to go into the play-offs. That's just the way it is. We will get ready for it."

England bound for World Cup play-offs despite win against Ukraine

What happens next for England?

England's fate will depend on their success in the play-offs.

They must get through two rounds of home and away ties against European opposition.

England will be seeded in the first round and drawn against one of the League C group winners, or one of the two best-ranked League C runners-up. England will host the second leg.

Possible opponents include Lithuania, Kosovo, Hungary, Greece, Romania, Belarus, Croatia and Kazakhstan.

Providing they come through that test, England will then need to progress through a second two-legged tie, with the successful teams assured of places in the World Cup finals.

The draws for both play-off rounds are scheduled for Thursday, 18 June, with matches to be played in October, November and December.

What it means for England is that they have less time to work on preparations for the World Cup and there will be pressure on them to deliver in October or they could miss out entirely.

While they remain heavily favoured to progress from the play-offs, they could have used the autumn international break to play friendly matches and try new things.

Players who are fighting for a place in the starting XI may not have as many opportunities to stake a claim, though Wiegman said she is keeping her options open.

"We're always following players and we have conversations about that. Of course, players know where they stand and why we would select them or not," she said.

"When I think you're the best player, I will pick you. That is what it is all about. I want to pick the best players that I think can compete at the highest level.

"If you're a younger player, or a more experienced player, for me, that is not the priority. I pick, in my opinion, the best players."

Where did they fall short?

Beth Mead came on as a substitute to score against Ukraine [Getty Images]

England did almost everything right in their qualifying group, winning five of their six matches, including the victory over Spain at Wembley in April.

They also scored 13 goals, conceded just five - four of which came against Spain - and kept four clean sheets.

But it is not easy to qualify automatically and England were given a rough draw with world champions Spain in their group. The quest for top spot was always likely to come down to their head-to-head record.

That is what happened as England ultimately missed out because they were thumped in Majorca.

That humbling defeat - which showed the gulf between the two teams when Spain are at their best - was their downfall.

Wiegman opted for experience in the starting XI against Spain. Despite not featuring for England since October, and only returning from a four-month injury in April, midfielder Ella Toone was given the nod over Lucia Kendall and Laura Blindkilde Brown.

Chelsea's Lucy Bronze started at right-back despite an injury in the build-up to the game.

In the end, England's midfielders were too passive and easily controlled by Spain, while the usually explosive frontline of Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp and Lauren James proved ineffective.

At the back, England struggled to live with Spain's creativity and dynamism, with only Esme Morgan impressing in a generally dismal performance.

England's sloppiness was compounded by the fact Spain produced one of their best performances to date and Wiegman could not come up with an answer for it.

Wiegman told BBC Radio 5 Live this week that she is "absolutely convinced" England can match Spain at their best if they are to meet again next year.

But that one crucial defeat showed just how difficult it is for England to qualify for major tournaments and why they cannot afford an 'off day' against the best teams.

"We have mixed feelings, of course. We were very disappointed with the way the game went [against Spain]," said midfielder Georgia Stanway, a scorer on Tuesday along with Jess Carter and Beth Mead.

"It's very rare that you get 15 points and still not make it out of the group. I think that it shows our level, our consistency, but we know our performance wasn't good enough against Spain."

Wiegman said it was a "good thing" that there is more competition throughout Europe but admitted it was tough to miss out on such fine margins.

"The Nations League brought more competition in Europe. I think that's really nice. We also noticed we have to play Spain so many times," she said.

"I was excited for this group to play Iceland as we hadn't played them. It's something for Uefa to have a look at, at least. The good thing is there is a lot of competition."

What have England learned?

There were plenty of positives for England throughout the qualifying campaign.

Defender Morgan appears to have cemented her place as England's centre-back partner to captain Leah Williamson when she returns from injury.

Midfielder Kendall showed she is more than capable of challenging for a regular role, while Manchester City's Blindkilde Brown was a standout performer in the victory over Ukraine in the number 10 position.

Former Everton defender Lindsay Johnson told BBC Radio 5 Live that Blindkilde Brown was England's best player against Ukraine and "showed Sarina what she can do", providing competition for Manchester United's Toone.

"Blindkilde Brown has had a very good season. She's a player who likes to get on the ball, and in pockets of space to drive at players," said Johnson.

"What we have seen tonight is her really linking the ball well with players who are ahead of her.

"Ella Toone looks to score goals, so I think they are two different players and that midfield position will be up for grabs.

"I was really impressed with Lucia Kendall when we were able to beat Spain at Wembley. She is such a mature player for her age."

Defensively, across the six games, England were more solid than they have been in recent years, despite switching centre-back partnerships regularly.

That was impacted by injuries to captain Leah Williamson, who started just two Women's Super League games for Arsenal this season in a disrupted campaign.

Asked what she had learned during the qualification group stage, Wiegman said: "I learned more about our team, individual players and the competition within the team.

"We have lots of different players in the same positions who can bring different things. I think what we also see is that there is more competition in Europe.

"Of course, we're a year out from the World Cup so I know where we are at now - but I don't know what the availability of players will be next year."

Silva agrees to replace Mourinho at Benfica: Marco Silva and Jose Mourinho both had spells as players with Portuguese clubs Belenenses and Rio Ave in their homeland [Getty Images]

Marco Silva has agreed to become Benfica's new head coach as the Portuguese club formalised Jose Mourinho's departure for Real Madrid.

Silva, 48, ended his five-year stint as Fulham boss a week ago when his contract at Craven Cottage expired.

Benfica said they had "reached an agreement" with Silva who is set to sign a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season which can be extended to 2028-29.

Fulham were Silva's fourth English club after spells in charge of Hull City, Watford and Everton.

Mourinho's exit from Estadio da Luz was also announced, with Benfica saying Real Madrid will pay them £13m (15m euros) in compensation to bring the 63-year-old back to the Bernabeu.

"The coach [Mourinho] has given his agreement to this hiring," added a Benfica statement.

"Thus ended Jose Mourinho's second spell as manager of Benfica's professional football team."

Mourinho took charge of Benfica in September and led them to third place in the Primeira Liga this season as they went through the league campaign unbeaten.

In his previous spell in charge of Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, the Portuguese won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

Matt Freese, USMNT's Harvard-educated goalkeeper, poised to start World Cup opener vs. Paraguay

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 10 Jun 2026 05:51:34 +0000

Matt Freese, USMNT's Harvard-educated goalkeeper, poised to start World Cup opener vs. Paraguay:

IRVINE, Calif. — In all likelihood, goalkeeper Matt Freese will start in the U.S. World Cup opener Friday against Paraguay. He has, after all, been Mauricio Pochettino’s primary netminder for a year, culminating with a 90-minute performance in the final tuneup last weekend.

And if, in fact, the soft-spoken Pennsylvanian is in the lineup for the Group D debut at SoFi Stadium — the first U.S. World Cup home match since 1994 and, by far, the biggest moment of his seven-year pro career — it would add another luminous achievement to his family’s history.

“I dream of this opportunity, you work for the opportunity, but you never know if it will come,” he said this week. “I learned probably nine years ago the ones that work hard without promise of reward are the ones that usually succeed.”

A World Cup assignment would punctuate a life nurturing both brain and body.

Freese, 27, studied economics and computer science at Harvard and, after turning pro following his sophomore season, continued his education online and earned an economics degree in 2022. His studies included a research project about penalty kicks — which he applied in heroic fashion last summer by saving three of Costa Rica’s six attempts in a Gold Cup quarterfinal.

Freese, in other words, is a smart cookie but hardly the only educated member of his clan.

His paternal grandparents, who were German immigrants, were scientists at the National Institutes of Health in the Washington area.

Matt’s late father, Andrew, was a neurosurgeon with two degrees from Harvard and a doctorate from MIT. In 2001, he performed the first successful gene-therapy trial for neurological disease in a human. His mother, Marcia, has degrees from Boston University and Tufts and founded a medical management company.

Matt’s aunt, Katherine, is a University of Texas physics professor who has been “working to identify the dark matter and dark energy that permeate the universe as well as to build a successful model for the early universe immediately after the Big Bang,” according to the school’s website.

Older brother Jack, a former Harvard rower, works in private equity.

“A lot of science, a lot of academia,” Matt said. “It was definitely interesting growing up.”

In high school, his parents prioritized academics and “knew the way of getting me motivated in the classroom was to hold soccer as a reward.”

At Harvard, “balancing academics and education, taking classes, was something that occupied my time, occupied my mind, and gave a very natural release off the field that I think at that age is necessary,” he said. “It's different now. I know how to handle it, but at that point in my life, it was incredibly important.”

Matt Freese brings an Ivy League background and a year as Mauricio Pochettino's top choice into the USMNT's World Cup opener.

These days, Freese’s priority is solely soccer. A Philadelphia Union homegrown signing before the 2019 Major League Soccer season, Freese started 13 matches over four years before being traded to New York City FC ahead of the 2023 campaign. A year later, he was the starter and one of the league’s rising goalkeeping stars.

The first invitation to a national team camp came in January 2025. At the time, he was behind not only Matt Turner, the 2022 World Cup starter, but multiple other candidates. Pochettino summoned Freese again before last summer’s Gold Cup and, after debuting in a friendly against Türkiye, the keeper’s job was his to lose.

Over the past year, Freese has started 15 of 18 matches, with Turner receiving the other three assignments. Chicago’s Chris Brady, 22, is the third World Cup keeper.

Freese will wear No. 24 — the same as former U.S. World Cup star Tim Howard wore during his club career. In MLS, Freese wears No. 49 in honor of his maternal grandfather, Jack Geary, who played for the New York Bulldogs in the American Football League. (At the World Cup, the highest available number is 26.)

Howard has “done a lot of historic things and really helped his team in the past, and I’d love the opportunity to do the same,” Freese said. “He was obviously one of the people I watched growing up, and so to have that same number as him at a World Cup is pretty, pretty cool.”

Freese would join a notable list of U.S. World Cup goalkeepers, including Hall of Famers Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller and Howard.

“I was a fan of that goalkeeping corps for much of my life – still am,” he said. “It's an honor to be part of that group to hopefully continue that great legacy.”

Competitors for the starting role, Freese and Turner seem to have strong relationship.

“There's a healthy, mutual respect between us, of course, and whatever the coach ultimately decides, we owe it to each other to respect that decision and support each other all the way till the end,” said Turner, the New England Revolution starter who, from an analytics standpoint, is having a better MLS season than Freese.

Both seem well-liked by teammates.

“Matt Freese has popped up over the last year and a half, and it's been really pleasing to watch,” midfielder Cristian Roldan said. “Matt Turner may be taking a step back, but he's been so incredibly supportive of Matt Freese and the team, putting the team first. Credit to both of them. Look, they're competing at the end of the day, but they want what's best for the team.”

Though the World Cup is looming, Freese has stuck to his routine. On the road with the national team, he brings his kettle from home and makes his favorite tea, an organic chamomile loose leaf. He also packs his own alarm clock.

“I love keeping things consistent, because if it works for you in small moments, then the game itself doesn't change,” Freese said. “And so it helps me at least deal with those big moments in that pressure.”

In all probability, he is about to face the biggest moment and enormous pressure.

Rangnick eyes Man United and Southampton staff for Milan, but issues ultimatum – report: Rangnick eyes Man United and Southampton staff for Milan, but issues ultimatum – report

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Ralf Rangnick wants to bring Southampton director Johannes Spors and Manchester United head scout Christopher Vivell to Milan, but expects a final decision from the Rossoneri by next week.

Milan are yet to appoint new directors and a coach after sacking Massimiliano Allegri, Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada and Igli Tare at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Their primary option for the technical director role is Austria coach Rangnick, who has just flown to the USA for the World Cup.

The 67-year-old has met with Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, expressing openness to the opportunity, but only if he can implement his vision and bring some trusted staff members to San Siro.

According to Gazzetta, Rangnick wants to work with Southampton director of sport Spors and Manchester United head scout Vivell at San Siro, while Oliver Glasner remains his top coaching choice.

According to the report, Milan are interested in Glasner regardless of whether Rangnick is appointed as a technical director, though USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino is also a strong candidate for the Milan job.

Ibrahimovic and Cardinale have already met with the representatives of both Glasner and Pochettino, while, according to Gazzetta, Rangnick expects a decision from Milan regarding his potential appointment by the beginning of next week.
