I just graduated and started a tenure track position at an R1. My spouse (not academic) and I have two jobs that pay pretty well and one young child. If I don’t get tenure we would move to a large city where his company has its headquarters and I would look for something there (in or out of academia, this is something we both agree on, so no advice needed on this point).
If I was denied tenure, our cost of living would increase and our combined pay would most likely decrease, so we want to invest now to help handle that shift. What we don’t know is where to invest about $20,000/year. We hated the financial planner, so I thought I would try a board of people that know something about tenure, relocation, etc.
We have $363k left on a 30yr mortgage @ 6.3%. It has PMI of $189/mth until we pay off another $58k (which would take 10 years at normal rate).
We have two low interest (0% and 3%) debts of $10,000 each (car and student loan). The car will be paid in 3 years, the loan in 10 years.
Other – we are in our early 30’s and in the 33% tax bracket. About average risk aversion. Our housing market is about average for turnaround.
Places we could put the money:
- Contribute another $10k to deferred comp
- Pay down the house until PMI is gone
- Pay off car / student loan
- Increase 529 contributions
- Increase mutual fund
- Increase money market fund
- Other?
