Speaking French is Always Cool

When was it seen as a bad thing to speak another foreign language? When was speaking French seen as non cool? Any ad that is promoting the dumbing down of America is not cool.

In an attack ad released by the New Gingrich's campaign, millionaire businessman and former Chief Executive of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is criticized by fellow Republican Newt Gingrich for being able to read and speak French fluently.

The backers of these ad attacks seem to have forgotten that Newt Gingrich has a doctorate in European History. Back in 1971, he submitted a dissertation, Belgian Education Policy in the Congo 1945-1960. The dissertation had a lot of French sources in its bibliography. How can those who prepared the ad miss such an important fact? Even Newt must have known some French to be able to conduct all his research for his dissertation. Otherwise, how else would he have made reference to all these French sources?

Speaking another language should be applauded by whoever has the means and intelligence to acquire it. Mitt Romney learned French when he was a Mormon missionary in Paris and Bordeaux in the 1960s. In business and in culture, the language has served Mitt Romney well. Releasing such a video attack ad will not encourage American students to learn a foreign language.

The ad attackers are linking Sen. John Kerry who speaks French fluently and lost to George Bush to Mitt Romney's French Connection. The message they are conveying is that French-speaking Romney will lose to President Obama just like Kerry lost to George Bush.

Let's not mingle politics with culture and intelligence. There is no reason to criticize somebody for knowing French. The attack ad may not sit well with the reality of the country. Most Americans like French. They would like to learn and speak French. French may be one of the languages that most of them would like to learn if they could.

Do not pay attention to the attack ad video that comes to discourage you and keep you away from meeting your linguistic goals. Speaking French is cool. Students should learn the language.

Is this just a fad? Or is the Baguette Vending Machine the beginning sign of a changing way of life for most French? Please stop questioning. It is time to go with the times! Pourquoi tout ce changement? On se demande.
Is this the case of cultural trespassing? Is this the case of American McDonald’s playing a few tricks on the sacred cow or sacred ground of French bakery?
Well, read on to find out more about the invention of this French baker who got tired of people making late-night forage to his bakery only to find there no fresh baguette ready to be purchased. Shoppers were coming to shop at all times at his bakery below his apartment. Necessity being the cause of most inventions, he had been working on this personal project for a number of years. It was not without facing some early failures, but he would not give up. He was determined to bring fresh, warm baguettes to his customers at any time of the day and night.
The French baker’s name is Jean-Louise Hetcht. Mr. Hetcht did not get discouraged by the laughter and name-calling by some of his famous friend or competitor chefs. He knew a few things well. During the months of July and August or vacation time, most French bakeries are closed. They close down for vacation time which is highly looked forward to by everybody. After a certain time, one can not find fresh baguettes from any good bakeries. So he wanted to have a machine that would solve these two problems: installing a 24-hour automated, fresh baguette dispenser that would please his customers all the time.
The idea appears simple but it is loaded with technology. The machine would be loaded with pre-cooked bread. Once a customer has made his/her selection, it would spit out warm and ready-to-eat baguette.
Et voilà! Baguettes en main, de nouveaux clients qui partent heureux comme jamais!

L'Eglise, dans la ligne de la mission reçue du Christ, ne cessera jamais d'accompagner le peuple haïtien et d'aller à sa rencontre en quel que lieux où il se trouve. Aujourd'hui, unis à tous les prêtres, religieux et religieuses, présents dans les coins les plus reculés du pays, nous sommes ici pour dire encore qu'aucune porte ne doit être fermée au Christ et que sa parole doit parvenir, par les oreilles, au coeur de tous les hommes.

Cette parole nous invite, dans l'aujourd'hui de notre pays, à l'amour dans sa double dimension : l'amour de Dieu et l'amour du prochain. Les idéologies politiques les plus saines, avec leurs programmes, passeront mais seul restera ce que l'amour a réalisé.
L'Eucharistie même que nous célébrons ce matin nous fait découvrir que la vie chrétienne comporte des passages, dans la ligne de Pâque qui est un passage des ténèbres à la lumière, du mensonge à la vérité, de la haine à l'amour. Le Christ, le samedi saint, est descendu aux enfers pour racheter tous ceux qui gisaient à l'ombre de la mort et pour les ramener à la vraie vie.

Cette descente aux enfers est nécessaire pour renaitre à l'amour et à la vérité. Le Pape Benoit XVI dans l'encyclique « Caritas in veritate », rappelle que : « L'amour dans la vérité est la force dynamique essentielle du vrai développement de chaque personne et de L'humanité entière ».

Plus loin, le Saint-Père clarifie encore mieux cette assertion: « L'amour est cette force extraordinaire qui pousse les personnes à s'engager avec courage et générosité dans le domaine de la justice et de la paix ; cette force qui a son origine en Dieu, Amour éternel et vérité absolue. Chacun trouve son bien en adhérant, pour le réaliser pleinement, au projet que Dieu a sur lui. En effet, il trouve dans ce projet sa propre vérité et c'est en adhérant à cette vérité qu'il devient libre ».
Vous avez bien compris tout cela, M. le Président, en suggérant vous-mêmes les textes bibliques soumis à notre méditation.

Qu'avons-nous fait de concret pour promouvoir la vérité et l'amour, la justice et la paix ? La passion de l'argent et du pouvoir a donné naissance à cette société faite encore d'exclusion et de discrimination ; société en pleine crise sociale, économique et politique. Tout notre système se retrouve ébranlé dans ses racines les plus profondes. Voila pourquoi la crise n'est pas seulement conjoncturelle, elle est aussi structurelle, gisant dans les fondements de la société, minant sa logique, si ce n'est son ethos même : la haine s'est installée, le mensonge est instrumentalisé, la cupidité et la corruption grimacent ; l'on vit dans la crainte, dans la peur, dans l'angoisse. Tout ce qui constituait notre patrimoine historique, culturel et religieux semble volé en éclats et perdu irrémédiablement.

Dans la foulée, l'Etat voit son autorité affaiblie, car il récompense l'appartenance et non la compétence; la compétence n'est pas orientée au service du bien commun ; le bien commun devient la recherche des intérêts personnels et non ceux de la patrie ; et l'amour de la Patrie, un vain mot. Que dire donc devant ces faits criants : Véritable descente aux Enfers ? Devant une telle dégradation : s'accuser réciproquement ou battre chacun sa coulpe ?

Mais en même temps, il nous faut paisiblement nous interroger sur l'influence réelle de la présence de l'aide externe ou extérieure dans nos affaires et sur nos affaires ; bienfaits et méfaits sont à peser et soupeser froidement, car souvent, dans le cadre de ce qu'on appelle de nos jours le devoir d'ingérence, Haïti risque de devenir un produit mis aux enchères.

Je crois, Monsieur le Président, que l'heure est venue de nous réapproprier notre destin hypothéqué, la souveraineté nationale mise à mal, notre identité noyée dans des cultures qui nous déracinent des valeurs qui, dans le passé, favorisait la liberté et la prospérité de la nation. Ce sont ces mêmes valeurs qui nous gardent toujours debout malgré les vicissitudes de notre histoire : la foi en Dieu, l'espérance en un lendemain qui finira par être meilleur, et une charité dont la misère ne saurait entraver le chemin.
Mais, l'heure est venue de faire place aussi à la raison pour établir des critères de discernement et rechercher les voies et moyens qui nous permettent de sortir d'une totale dépendance politique et socioéconomique. L'heure est venue de construire nos propres capacités pour susciter et faciliter un nouveau leadership, pour affronter les défis des temps présent et futur.

L'heure est venue pour une vraie renaissance de l'haïtien et de l'haïtienne en vue d'une nouvelle Haïti ou mieux d'une Haïti renouvelée. Il est de toute urgence que l'Etat s'engage à construire un nouveau protagonisme haïtien sur la scène nationale et internationale.

L'heure est venue d'enclencher un véritable dialogue national : pour bâtir un plan national de développement durable, pour réconcilier la nation avec elle-même, pour établir un code d'éthique politique et un pacte de gouvernabilité du pays, pour définir le profil du nouveau type d'haïtien, d'haïtienne et le profil de la nouvelle société recherchée. Et conclure ainsi ce que l'on peut bien nommer un Pacte social aux contours et aux aspirations marqués au coin du respect mutuel, de la transparence, de la solidarité, de la justice. Vous direz alors, votre volonté d'être à l'écoute de chaque Haïtien, et spécialement, puisqu'il s'agit d'écouter, de ceux qui n'ont jamais eu la voix au chapitre ou qui n'ont plus de voix. C'est seulement après les avoir bien écoutés, qu'il faudra parler en leur nom. Et là, il ne faudra pas avant tout leur dire ce qu'ils veulent entendre, mais ce qui doit être dit. Vous avez envers ce peuple, le devoir de la vérité, de l'honneur, du respect de la parole donnée.

Comprenez bien tout cela, Monsieur le Président, parce que votre investiture à la Magistrature suprême de l'Etat est un signe, un symbole exprimant le désir de tous ceux qui ont placé en vous leur confiance et, en général, de tous les haïtiens, haïtiennes indistinctement, dont vous êtes le président. Ils ont besoin vraiment de respirer un air de liberté et de sécurité indispensable à leur plein épanouissement.

Nous retrouvons ainsi, en votre personne, le désir profond de tout un peuple, de notre peuple, votre peuple, d'un changement radical, mais authentique dans la gouvernance de ce pays ; un pays où nous ne cessons de rappeler que chaque haïtien doit avoir sa place. Chaque membre de cette nation a une pierre à apporter à sa reconstruction physique, économique, sociopolitique, culturelle et religieuse qu'il faut accueillir et déposer à sa juste place.

L'Evangile de Matthieu (Mt 20, 17-28) que vous avez écouté soulève une question exigeante. C'est celle que Jésus pose aux deux fils de Zébédée, Jacques et Jean: « Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire » ? Ils répondent : « oui » ! Mais ils n'ont aucune idée de ce dont il parle. Prenez pour vous-même aussi, M. le Président, cette même question. Je veux croire que votre réponse sera certainement positive avec, bien sûr aussi, des conséquences auxquelles vous ne vous attendrez pas.

Durant votre tournée du pays, vous avez constaté la coupe à laquelle s'abreuve ce peuple meurtri, humilié et bafoué : coupe remplie de souffrances physiques, morales et spirituelles ; coupe de la privation, de la solitude, de l'exclusion, de l'abandon et de l'angoisse. Une coupe remplie d'amertume. Comment transformer cette coupe de chagrin et de tristesse en espérance, joie et amour? Le Christ qui a bu cette coupe jusqu'à la lie, avait la confiance pleine et entière de son Père qu'il appelait « Abba, Papi » ! Le coeur blessé d'amour, il s'est livré, s'est donné pour le salut de ce peuple. Puisqu'Il dit qu'« Il n'y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ceux qu'on aime ».

Vouloir ce changement radical implique de votre part une option claire et nette de vous mettre au service de chaque haïtien, de chaque haïtienne, peu importe sa condition sociale, économique, politique et religieuse. Tout en étant attentif à tous ces niveaux d'intervention, il faut se rappeler la mise en garde du Pape Benoit XVI dans Caritas in Veritate (CIV), numéro 29: « Les pays économiquement développés exportent vers les pays pauvres ..., une vision réductrice de la personne et de sa destinée. C'est le dommage que le surdéveloppement inflige au développement authentique quand il s'accompagne d'un sous-développement moral ». Prenez garde à ne pas vous laisser influencer par des idéologies qui ne favorisent pas l'intégration des valeurs, de nos valeurs culturelles et religieuses.
Monsieur le Président, la tâche est immense. Mais, je vous encourage à ne laisser rien, ni personne, vous faire perdre cet élan de confiance qui vous porte à la charge suprême de l'Etat, qui apporte l'espérance à un peuple par trop désabusé. Que ni rien ni personne ne vous fasse abandonner votre rêve de voir un jour ce pays se relever de ses souffrances.
Connaissez-vous aujourd'hui un Président ou un Chef de Gouvernement qui arrive au pouvoir sans avoir des défis à relever et des décisions importantes à prendre ? Le cas d'Haïti dévasté par les catastrophes, intempéries et épidémies, semble être particulier. Mais, je ne vous apprendrai rien en vous disant que c'est un peuple fort qui se met sous votre commande.

Notre prière, Mr le Président de la République, continuera à attirer la bénédiction de Dieu sur cette terre pour l'aider à sortir du gouffre du désespoir vers la lumière de l'espérance.
Que le Christ Ressuscité vous bénisse et vous aide à réaliser tous les projets et bons voeux que vous formulez pour ce pays.

Que Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours vous apprenne, la fidélité, la persévérance dans les bonnes décisions.
Que Saint Joseph, le Père Nourricier de Jésus, vous aide à avoir une attention singulière pour chaque membre de cette nation.
Que Saint Michel Archange, votre patron, défende et protège la nation haïtienne. AMEN !

Le Français en Amérique : Quand on parle de Francophonie, on parle des pays où on parle Français. Dans le contexte des Amériques, il s’agit du Canada, spécifiquement le Québec, le Nouveau-Brunswick, Manitoba, Ile-du-Prince-Edouard, Nouvelle-Ecosse, les Territoires du Nord-Ouest etc, Haïti et les territoires d’outre mer Français tels que la Guadeloupe et la Martinique. La Francophonie va plus loin de ça. Quand on parle de Francophonie, on voit l’Europe, le Moyen Orient, et l’Afrique. Sur le continent Européen, les pays Francophones sont la France, la Belgique, et la Suisse. En Afrique, on trouve le Sénégal, le Maroc, le Mali, la Côte d’Ivoire, La République du Congo, le Rwanda, le Niger, le Tchad, l’Algérie, la Tunisie et le Cameroun. Un francophone est une personne qui parle Français. Un pays Francophone, c’est un pays où on parle Français. Mais il y beaucoup plus de personnes qui utilisent le Français quotidiennement. En tant qu’une langue officielle, le Français est la langue de l’éducation et du gouvernement. Il est aussi une langue maternelle, a lingua franca. C’est aussi une langue du commerce et de la diplomatie. C’est la deuxième langue la plus enseignée après l’Anglais. On estime que plus de 115 million de personnes parlent Français chaque jour et dans leurs activités personnelles et quotidiennes.

French in the Americas: When we speak about Francophonie, we speak about countries where French is spoken. In the context of the Americas, we are talking about Canada or specially Quebec, le New Brunswick, Manitoba, Prince Edouard Island, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories etc (Le Pays, Statistique Canada 93-102).1986 census)., Haiti, and the French Overseas territories such as Guadeloupe and Martinique. Francophonie goes beyond that. When we speak about Francophonie, we see Europe, Middle East and Africa. On the European continent, the Francophone countries are France, Belgium, and Switzerland. In Africa, we find Senegal, Maroc, Mali, Ivory Coast, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Niger, Tchad, Algeria, Tunisia, and Cameroun. A Francophone is somebody who speaks French. A Francophone country is a nation where French is spoken. But there are many more people who use French on a daily basis. As an official language, French is the second most taught second language after English. They estimate that more than 115 million people speak French every day and in their daily personal activities.

While men shake hands, women tend to kiss each other in French-speaking countries. Yes, people gently kiss each other on the cheek or shake hands when they meet. As they leave, people also kiss or give a handshake. Le bisou usually starts on the right cheek. The number of kisses may vary depending on your relationship and the warmth of your encounter. In French-speaking countries, the space between the speakers is also shorter. That is very different in English-speaking countries.
