President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he is canceling an additional $9 billion in student debt as repayments started up again this month after a three-year pause. The move affects 125,000 people who qualify under existing programs, including public-service workers such as teachers and firefighters and people on permanent disability, according to a White House statement. “This kind of relief is life-changing for individuals and their families,” the President said on Wednesday. The announcement comes as the President tries to find workarounds to offer some debt relief after the Supreme Court struck down his more ambitious plan over the summer. That plan would have wiped out more than $400 billion in student debt for about 43 million borrowers.

In my opinion, your neighbors are having a luxury dinner party with a private chef. They are middle-aged professionals. The party is 15 people. According to Edith Olmsted, a lot of deplorable things were said during the Republican debate on Wednesday night, but this comment from Republican candidate Tim Scott may take the cake. During the debate, Scott argued that welfare assistance was harder than slavery for Black Americans. “Black families survived slavery!” he exclaimed. “We survived poll taxes and literacy tests.” “We survived discrimination being woven into the laws of our country,” he added, in a line that for a moment sounded like he might actually be acknowledging systemic racism. “What was hard to survive was Johnson’s Great Society, where they decided to put money– where they decided to take the Black father out of the household to get a check in the mail.” Johnson’s Great Society, launched in 1964, was one of the most significant federal social welfare programs in U.S. history. It greatly expanded welfare policy by writing Medicare and Medicaid into U.S. law, increasing Social Security benefits, and generally expanding assistance to the elderly and the poor. That Scott had harsher words for welfare assistance than for slavery is not just an overt ahistorical reach. Frankly, it’s embarrassing.

This is an interesting question, should a pastor's sins be private? Johnny Hunt from the Southern Baptist Convention, is attempting to sue for defamation because he claims his reputation has been sullied by others making his sins public. The difficulty for him and others in similar spots is that they must prove that the allegations are 1. not true and 2. that lies were purposefully told to harm them. That is an uphill battle for anyone who actually committed the sin or crime in question, is a public figure like a pastor who preaches against such sins, and when people is raising the issue to protect a group of other people. Can Yoga Be Christianized?

Ms. Ann, please talk to me about Holy Yoga. I know yoga's origins but a friend of mine teaches Holy Yoga. Is this possible?

I'm sorry but Yoga cannot be made "holy" as it is a practice that uses certain positions and flows to worship their gods which scripture says are demons (the term "yoga" means to yoke with Brahman), the poses are meant to align your chakras and to eventually reach "moksha" which is universal freedom/nirvana. I recommend reading up first on what yoga is and then you can easily see that it cannot be "Christianized". What do y'all think?

John Drew Sheard, the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) announced last Friday, a new partnership with the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). In a video post, Bishop Sheard announced that he had visited Salt Lake City, Utah, and met with leaders of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, including the First President Russell Nelson and the Board of Twelve. Specific details of the partnership between COGIC and the Church of Latter Day Saints remain unclear.

However, Bishop Sheard did share that there was a discussion as to how COGIC and LDS church can partner to impact the world in a positive way. The Church of God in Christ is the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States with membership exceeding 6M. It is the second largest primarily Black denomination in America. The Church of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, is the 4th largest Christian denomination in the US with a membership of 6M people.

The purpose of this is for HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS why back down? Maybe he should have stood his ground. If the church was more transparent, the backlash would not be as visceral. And furthermore, only active and tithing members of the church should have an opinion.

One of Miami's oldest Black churches has until Sept. 11 to pay back a $1.6 million mortgage taken out in the church's name by its former pastor, or three of its main buildings, including a fellowship hall where service is held, will be auctioned off, a Miami-Dade judge has ordered. The former pastor of St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Miami was fired after learning that he took out two mortgages totaling nearly $2.5 million in the church's name in 2017 and 2018 that the church said it did not know about at the time.

Before Bishop James D. Adams signed his name to two mortgages on the church totaling nearly $2.5 million, St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Overtown — one of the oldest Black churches in Miami — was in good financial standing. But after months and months of missed payments and a shake-up of church leadership, St. John’s is now facing foreclosure on three of its properties that were pledged as collateral against the loans. St John’s, which has roots going back to 1906, 10 years after the city of Miami was founded, has until Aug. 14 to pay back the lender or congregants will lose their fellowship hall, which houses the Sunday School classrooms and where services are held while the church undergoes renovations. Two other church buildings and their parking lots also are affected. The historic church building at 1328 NW Third Ave. is not impacted.

Anyhow, Willie McLaurin, the acting president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee, resigned suddenly on Thursday (Aug. 17) after admitting he had falsified his resume. “While considering McLaurin as a candidate for Floyd’s permanent replacement, the SBC Executive Committee’s Presidential Search Team discovered disqualifying information during their process of vetting and due diligence,” said Philip Robertson, chairman of the SBC Executive Committee, in a statement. “McLaurin’s education credentials that he presented in his resume are false.” The statement quoted from McLaurin’s resignation letter, saying he admitted falsifying his resume. “In a recent resume that I submitted, it included schools that I did not attend or complete the course of study,” McLaurin reportedly said in resigning.

Among those indicted in Georgia on Monday alongside Trump was a retired pastor from the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod denomination, who was charged with crimes in connection to efforts to intimidate an election worker. "Up until at least this weekend, Lee served Living Word Lutheran Church in Orland Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. A former Florida pastor has been accused of operating a multi-million dollar theft ring spanning several Florida counties. “This pastor clearly skipped over the commandment—thou shall not steal,” said Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody in a statement. Authorities arrested Robert Dell, 56, and four other associates for stealing merchandise worth more than $1.4 million from several of The Home Depot stores and then selling the merchandise on eBay under the name ‘Anointed Liquidator.”

The virtual store has a 100% approval rating and has registered more than 35,000 items sold over the past decade, according to its page on the online retailer’s website. Retired NFL star Michael Oher, whose supposed adoption out of grinding poverty by a wealthy, white family was immortalized in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," petitioned a Tennessee court Monday with allegations that a central element of the story was a lie concocted by the family to enrich itself at his expense. The 14-page petition, filed in Shelby County, Tennessee, probate court, alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who took Oher into their home as a high school student, never adopted him. Instead, less than three months after Oher turned 18 in 2004, the petition says, the couple tricked him into signing a document making them his conservators, which gave them legal authority to make business deals in his name. Good News, Brett Favre Will Not Be Removed From The Mississippi Civil Lawsuit Seeking To Recover Millions Of The State’s Misspent Welfare Dollars.

The Mississippi Supreme Court says it will not remove NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre as a defendant in a civil lawsuit seeking to recover millions of dollars of misspent welfare money meant to help some of the poorest people in the United States. Favre asked a judge to remove him from the civil lawsuit as he continues to deny the allegations against him. In April, Hinds County Circuit Judge Faye Peterson refused his request. He then took his case to the Mississippi Supreme Court in hopes they would remove him.

On Thursday, the state's Supreme Court also denied Brett Favre's request. He is one of dozens listed in the civil lawsuit filed by Mississippi's Department of Human Services last year. The department is looking to recover millions of dollars intended for low-income residents in the state. The allegations against Brett Favre date back to 2020. It was then that the state of Mississippi did an internal audit and found that $77 million was misused.

The money was intended to help those facing poverty and low-income situations. In 2021, Mississippi demanded that Favre repay the $1.1 million that he paid for speaking engagements that he never completed. In October 2021, he paid some amount, but still owes $228,000, as an interest amount. It was at this time that Favre took to Twitter to tell his side of the story and said he would never accept money for work he never did.

When the GOP House rejects taking care of the people in need, I knew they weren't Christians. Remember the slave owners went to church every Sunday. We've all known for years that most Christians weren't Christians anymore, but even so, this is shocking. I wonder what they *think* they are.

Evangelical Christian leader Russell Moore revealed this week that many evangelical pastors have become alarmed that their Trump-loving congregants have become so militant that they are even rejecting the teachings of Jesus Christ.

In an interview with NPR, Moore said that multiple pastors had told him disturbing stories about their congregants being upset when they read from the famous "Sermon on the Mount" in which Christ espoused the principles of forgiveness and mercy as central to Christian doctrine. Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically in their preaching turn the other cheek [and] to have someone come up after to say, Where did you get those liberal talking points? Moore revealed. And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ, the response would not be, I apologize. The response would be yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's week.
