Mosaic Hops: A Dissertation

It's been too long since we've offended the public at large. In an effort to remind you all of the profundity and brilliance of our beer knowledge we have decided to discuss one hop across three styles. Make sure to take detailed notes as this episode will surely help you pass your Cicerone Certification Program.

The offerings in this episode all contain mosaic hops.

We start with Small and Soft from Bare Hands Brewery. This New England Style Pale Ale offers great utility and artwork that left Adam nearly speechless.

Next up was was an American IPA; Pompeii from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company. Clocking in at 6.3% ABV it's not even close to one of their strongest offerings, but this one stood out with strong pineapple flavors.

To finish out the episode we sampled one of Destihl Brewery's Deadhead IPA Series, Touch of Haze. Juicier than the Pompeii it hid the 7.3% ABV quite well.

It's finally happened! We located an Indiana brewery that we haven't previously offended and was not aware of the inherent risks associated with the mere presence of Adam in the building. Cedar Creek Brewing Company opened the brewery doors and collaborated with us on our first ever commercial beer release, Revival!

This pre-prohibition lager is an all-day drinker with an earthy and hoppy finish that is so clear, you could read a book through it! Not that we at thespeakpodcast endorse reading. You know, because effort and stuff.

Special thank you to Sugar Creek Malt Company for providing the finest in local malt products and helping making our beer the refreshingly outstanding product that it is.

If you want to try it, hurry to Cedar Creek Brewing now. Or, for you folks further up North, Brewdog Indy should have some as well.

INterspace is an Out of This World (puns are great) collaboration with Cedar Creek Brewing and Indy's (second) best podcast, Out Here Having a Pint. They kept it local featuring malt from Sugar Creek Malt Company and hops from 812 Farms.

As space was involved, we knew we needed to keep it brief; lest you all wanted to hear Adam's dissertation about Star Wars in a post-modern America. You may just want to take our word for it, nobody wants to hear that.

A Few Imperial Stouts

Double IPA's and a Toilet Symposium

If you think that title sounds off-putting, just wait until you listen to this episode!

We make a very deliberate and concerted effort in our first episode of 2021 to stay on task and on topic. Things start off well while we discuss 18th Street Brewing's Deal with the Devil. It was a boozy little number that we all enjoyed.

There is then an artful transition into Cigar City Brewing's Florida Man. A little juicy, a little resin, and a nice little beer.

Then things start to take a little turn. Some Double IPA discussion leads to water quality discussion. In an effort to make our discussion sound more intelligent than it actually was, Pete delves into a toilet symposium. Yes, we talk toilets. Not just that, but the most effective way to brew utilizing said toilet.

And because Pete seems to think tying reputable companies to his asinine ideas will have favorable outcomes, he's requested brewing companies send us equipment for a head-to-head "brewoff." Their equipment vs a toilet.... Because apparently when state of the art, modern brewing equipment can brew a better product than a porcelain waste disposal device that has to improve their sales, right?

We've never claimed to be the most organized podcast on the internet; we mostly just claim to be the best podcast on the internet.

Having said that, please enjoy a podcast that was recorded over a year ago after superfan, "DZ" brought us a bounty of beverages from Terre Haute Brewing Company out of Terre Haute, Indiana. We sampled and reviewed the CitraGenesis Wheat Beer, Madame Brown English Brown Ale, Powerline Imperial Double East Coast IPA, and the Sticky Green Double IPA.

We'll have to follow-up with THBC after they listen to this episode and see if they'll allow us in the brewery. These beers are good enough to justify a trip to Terre Haute. We know, we know, it smells - but trust us, it's worth it.

We sourced an "AF" expert and located another Fultz who is something of a fledging authority on alcohol free beer. Yes, you read correctly. We used both "Fultz" and "expert" in the same sentence... Adam has a brother.

We consume three IPA's - so we titled the episode three IPA descriptors. Really can't tell you if they're appropriate or not; after the first few minutes of Adam talking about Star Wars my brain just went numb.

First out of the gates is Triton's The Hempire Strykes Back. It's an approachable Hemp IPA that lead to so much Star Wars discussion.

Our second Indy beer is from a brewery we haven't sampled on the show before, Mind Over Mash. We consume their Hop Lord... and then discuss Star Wars. Because, you know, Adam's mental acrobatics.

Lastly we review Heretic Brewing Company's You Can't Handle the Juice! At some point in time the taste of eyeballs was mentioned. Don't let that dissuade you however, it was actually pretty well reviewed.

Oh crap, we’re a week late posting this episode. To make it up to you though, we’re going three stouts deep in this episode. Also, we bring back sports questions for Adam.

To kick things off we sample Franken gloop from Books &Brews. It’s a triple chocolate stout, aged in a rye wheat whiskey barrel. It’s part of their Monster Reserve Series.

Keeping it local, we then move to Deer Creek Brewery's Black Mystic Java Stout. Editor’s note: This was last year’s Black Mystic. The year’s release is more “robust.”

And to wind things down a bit, we venture out of state to discuss, Prairie Artisan Ales: No Chill Coffee Milk Stout.

A Trip to Scarlet Lane

We've been taking our show on the road here lately. Our travels (back in early July) brought us to Scarlet Lane in McCordsville to share some fine fermented beverages with our friends from OHHAP.

Sure our information is a little bit dated - OHHAP switched from podcasting to YouTube videos and left the network, perhaps the No Coast Cuisine transition to Trax BBQ, and maybe the Scarlet Lane 80's Halloween party already happened. But that's no reason not to listen!

We sampled some offerings from Grand Junction and had a great time all around talking about the importance of craft beer culture and giving back to the community. Shorty: Whitestown Brewfest 2018

When the city of Whitestown comes calling with beer, you answer the call. Friend of the show, Sarah Burns asked if we wanted to come to Whitestown to see what some home brewers had to offer, so we made the trip.

When we arrived we were able to meet up with Justin of Books and Brews and our good friends, Kevin and Kelsey of Out Here Having a Pint. We caught up a little bit and discussed scented butt wipes before venturing off to sample some beers.

We hit up Nick Boling of Rocket Man brewing (spoiler alert: He won the competition) and learned about why he got in to brewing. Nick pointed us in the direction of, Jeremiah Tyson of Tyson Craft Brewing to get learned about mead.

After that, we visited with Sarah before Pete had to leave in order to avoid spontaneous combustion. His fair ginger skin would not allow him to be in the sun any further.

Our friends from OHHAP talked in us to joining them on their trip to Columbus, Ohio for Brewdog's Annual General Mayhem party/business meeting. This is an annual gathering of Brewdog's shareholders or, "Equity Punks." In short, we're glad we said, "yes."

Take a look at our social media posts from the weekend. It's safe to say that we had a great time. From the beer to the fantastic facilities to the great live music. Despite all of that, our favorite part is the people that we met and the relationships that were forged. Throughout our craft beer journey the people involved have always been the cornerstone of what makes the craft beer industry great.

Amber ales and animal facts. It's nearly as informative as Discovery Channel's Shark Week. If Shark Week was produced by a couple of idiots and their fourteen year-old cousin who "ain't quite right."

The highlights include Fountain Square Brewing's Preacher's Daughter Amber Ale. It's an American Amber with hints of citrusy hops balanaced with buiscuit malts.

Next up is Urban Artifact's Thoroughbred Barrel Aged Imperial Amber Ale. This one sparks quite a nice conversation among the group...

Which is a great segue into us falling off a cliff in to the ocean where octopus live in glorious cities. Yes. Apparently that is a thing, or so says Adam. Tune in to learn more.

Brown Beers and Beaver Butts

Don't let that super-sweet episode title fool you. There is actually, genuinely, truthfully good beer reviewing that took place in this episode. Sure, we then talked about getting pulled over and chugging a beer, Adam's death hugs, and expressing beaver butts. All of this because you need to get the hard-hitting news somewhere and we're just the team to bring it to you.

Expert journalism aside, our local beer is Bier Brewery's Backpackin' Brown Porter. This medium bodied porter "for all seasons" caused some insightful beer discussion amongst the group. And yes, even Adam.

Up next is Dogfish Head's Palo Santo Marron. This American Brown Ale really wow'ed the collective. Seek this one out, give it a shot and let us know your thoughts.

BES: Irish Beer with Four Day Ray and The Pint Cycle

We sat down with some friends from Four Day Ray and The Pint Cycle at FDR Brewery in Fishers. We in the tap room on kegging day (if you're wondering what those noises are), and we gained some additional education and insight in to traditional Irish beer styles just in time for St. Patrick's day!

This is the first episode in our new Beer Education Series. Come learn with us! We cycle through a few beers in this episode. The first two are red ales: FDR's Kingstown Irish Red followed by Boulevard's Irish Red. The Four Day Ray beer is a little closer to the style with some added rye, and the Boulevard is a unique take on an Irish Red.

We then try Guinness's relatively new, Rye Pale Ale and wrap things up with a Mofo Risin' Stout. We learn about some of the history of Irish style beer, what SRM's are, the best beer to sneak in to the new #BlackPanther movie, and that Hutch calls those who ride The Pint Cycle "passengers."

The Beeriest Ballet

We talk Sun King Beer, learn new and pretentious sounding French ballet terms and manage to negotiate a spot for Adam in the stage performance.

A Boozy New Year's Eve

Celebrate dropping balls with your favorite Indiana beer podcast... who has inexplicably started a tradition of reviewing spirits on New Year's Eve.

We begin with Hotel Tango's Victor Vodka. Hotel Tango is a veteran owned distillery located in Indianapolis.

We then artfully transition to a distillery a bit further South in Bloomington Indiana; Cardinal Spirits. We sample their Tiki Rum. It is a floral rum and it serves as the tipping point for the shenanigans on this New Year's Eve. Argument ensues as we move even further South to Borden Indiana home of the Huber Winery and Starlight Distillery and discuss our collective thoughts regarding their Gin.

We end back in Indianapolis with B Street Blues Bourbon Whiskey from a newer distillery in the are, West Fork Whiskey.

Collab Trifecta

Collaborations o'plenty this episode. We grabbed all of the bottles we could here locally to bring you a collab trifecta. We've got beers from all over the state... or mostly, from the North of the state.

To open our show we talk about, Double O Session IPA from Sun King Brewery out of Indianapolis and Revolution Brewing out of Chicago. Session IPA is a very apt description and each brewery was able to maintain their identity in this beer while the marriage of the two brought out a very distinct taste.

That beer is promptly and professionally followed by a joint effort from Deviate Brewing and Black Acre Brewing both out of Indiana. This Quadruple IPA is named, Hop Lunacy and for very good reason. This one is a "right of passage" type IPA and probably tastes like nothing you've had before.

This episode is finished off with a collaboration between 3 Floyds Brewing and Dark Matter Coffee out of Chicago. The Mastodon Crack The Skye is a very good beer, but this beer caused some argument among the group.

We heard from our secret industry sources that the Zionsville location has a revamped food menu and is now family friendly. Family friendly of course means that children are allowed so we brought Adam who promptly found the crayons and a place mat and proceeded to begin coloring. His night culminated with an embarrassing tic-tac-toe loss to intern, Steve.

We squeeze beer, humor, and pointless banter in to a bite-sized 15 minutes of fun. Enjoy!

Porters Again

Porters and Predator-Holes

A Night at Redemption

Smokes & Chasers: A Quick Guide to Sizes & Shapes

Here's the first thing to know about cigar shapes and sizes: there is no real standard.
A robusto from one company is likely as not to be longer and fatter than one from another. Add to that the fact that there are so many sizes to choose from; coronas, churchills, diademas, presidentes, gordos, perfectos, toros, panatellas, lanceros... Some companies forgo traditional naming conventions all together, making up their own names to further muddy the waters.
To sift through all this, first we need to learn how cigar size is measured.
Length is easy: it is simply measured in inches.
Width, called ring gauge, is a little trickier, as it is measured in 64ths of an inch.
For example, the "standard" size of a robusto cigar is expressed as 5 x 50. That means that it's 5 inches long, with a ring gauge of 50/64th of an inch.
Understanding that, we can get into specifics of size and shape a bit more.
From the 10,000 foot view, cigars are separated into two categories: Parejos and Figurados.
Parejos are the classic cigar everyone thinks of: rounded off on one end (the head), flat on the other (foot).

Anything that isn't a Parejo is considered a Figurado, of which there are many sub-categories.

Within these shapes, cigars are further classified based on their size. Again, this isn't exact, as there is no real rule governing cigar size naming conventions. However, the following list contains the most popular types, and their "classic" measurements.

- Corona - 5.5 x 44

- Robusto - 5 x 50

- Toro - 6 x 50

- Churchill - 7 x 48

- Gordo - 6 x 60

Our purpose here at Thespeakpodcast is primarily beer. Specifically, the drinking thereof and the (far less important) subsequent discussion and review.

"Indy beer. Indie beer." See? It's right there in our motto.

Now, that's not to say that we don't have other hobbies...which incidentally can also be indulged while drinking beer.

As you might have guessed from the title, I'm here today to talk about smoking whilst drinking, as a few of the podcast members are wont to do. We'll get into specific beer and cigar pairings in later posts. For now, let's start with some basics.
Beer has a number of points in its favor to accompany a cigar when compared to other types of libation, including:
- Its price-point, which is substantially lower than the traditional choices (bourbon, scotch, brandy, etc.)
- Its versatility, with flavor profiles able to properly compliment or contrast any cigar on the market
- Its relative mildness, which, when compared to hard alcohols, won't overpower the flavors in a cigar
Cigars are much like beer, in that you have macro- and micro- producers, a wide variety of flavor profiles, and a wide variety of ingredients that create those profiles. For now, we'll just concern ourselves with the outer leaf of tobacco, known as the wrapper.
The wrapper contributes up to 90% of a cigar's flavor. Knowing which wrappers are which will give you a general flavor the cigar will exhibit. What follows is a list of the most common wrappers, and their general flavors:
- Connecticut: Mild bodied, with smooth & creamy notes
- Natural: Mild-to-medium bodied, with sweeter, sometimes slightly spicy notes
- Corojo: Medium-to-full bodied, with earthy, peppery notes
- Maduro: Medium-to-full bodied, with coffee and cocoa
- Habano: Full bodied, spicy, can have hints of coffee and cocoa
A good rule of thumb is that the lighter a cigar wrapper, the more mild it will be. This is not always the case, but holds a good deal of the time.
So, with even that little bit of knowledge, we can start trying to pair our fine smoke-ables with beer. Starting out, it's probably preferable to try combinations that compliment each other.
For example, a Connecticut wrapped cigar would stand up better to a pilsner than a stout. On the other end, the cocoa usually found in maduro cigars would pair well with a chocolate porter or stout.
Next time, we'll get into more on the various sizes and shapes cigars can be found in, but for now, I've got to go.
My beer's getting warm, and my smoke is still cold.

It's Thanksgiving! And for those of you looking to enjoy spending quality time with family huddled around a computer or smart device listening to your favorite podcast, we're here for you. As is it Thanksgiving, we blew the budget and brought in special celebrity guest, Matt Muncy from Indiana on Tap. Instead of the traditional maize, he brought us booze from Cardinal Spirits Black Bear Bierschnaps and Walnut Nocino and Teddy Bear Kisses from Upland Brewing.

Greetings listeners! We may have hit a new low with this episode.

We start things off with Demonik from Carson's Brewing out of Evansville, Indiana. The group believes there was something wrong with the six pack we obtained from our booze shop. However, much like with our Flat 12 beer, we consumed and rated this beverage. Rest assured though, Carson's Brewing will get another sampling and review and they still do stand out as one of the group's favorite Indiana breweries. That being said, the review was not great.

We then partake of Shorts Bellaire Brown Ale. Adam's description of the bottle is about what you'd expect from him, as is the review in general.

Speaking of Adam, he then discusses dog years, polar bear licensing, and seeks to apply for a job at the Smithsonian.
