The PS3 launch a cakewalk? At the worldwide sales debut of PlayStation 3, Sony's newest console attracted dozens of media outlets and thousands of people willing to camp outside overnight for a chance to score the 60,000 yen game system.

Minutes before the clock struck 7:00 A.M. and Sony's new PlayStation 3 console would officially go on sale, a company representative addressed the crowd of media and the new face of early bird game console buyers - Chinese nationals.

Unfortunately for her and the rest of the Sony entourage, the men and women standing patiently in the front of the line either didn't understand what she was saying, or didn't care - the first buyers of PS3 were largely elderly Chinese men and young Chinese women with shaky Japanese language skills.

A 26-year-old Chinese man politely stood on stage while the organizers earnestly tried to squeeze some information him.

The Japanese media would later catch up with him, confirming suspicions that the first PS3 buyer didn't understand Japanese. An eyewitness claimed the young man didn't purchase a single game for his brand-new PS3.

This is the true face of the PlayStation 3 debut in Japan. Hardcore gamers are not here waiting in line overnight, buying a first-run PS3, and running home to play some good old next-gen gaming. Rather, opportunistic Japanese businessmen have the largest presence, hiring poor Chinese men and women to wait in line for a PS3, one which will later be sold on web auctions to wealthy gamers around the world for exorbitant amounts of money.

THE LINE

Around the corner of Bic Camera, the line continued on and was partitioned by a television news van. The pressure was too much as the line busted open and more pushing ensued (which broke out in front of the waiting truck), causing those waiting in back to push forward, inching themselves closer to the finish line with a prideful Kutaragi waiting.

A gruff-looking Bic Camera manager was the first to realize the problem - nobody in line understood the directions his employees were screaming. He quickly grabbed one of his Chinese-speaking employees, put him on top of a ladder, handed him a megaphone, and instructed the young man to address the crowd in Chinese.

CLOCK STRIKES SEVEN

Based on my observations of the first twenty PS3s sold at Bic Camera, they were all purchased by Chinese nationals, none of whom bought any software. One elderly Chinese man, next in line to buy a PS3, was in a state of panic. All but one young man - a Chinese exchange student studying in Japan. "What game will you play on your PS3?" she asked.

"The tennis game," he replied. Among the four software titles that launched with the PS3 in Japan, there was only one sports title - Sega's golf game. It's not the Chinese that I'm upset about. If you're poor and without a good job in Japan, 20,000 yen to wait in line isn't a bad deal. Sixty seconds before Kutaragi kicked off the launch, rain started to fall on hundreds of people in line, many without umbrellas. Meanwhile, true Japanese gamers are waiting. Based on the record-breaking attendence of this year's Tokyo Game Show, there are tens of thousands of Japanese interested in playing (not selling) PlayStation 3. As evidenced by the ongoing DS Lite storages in Japan, patient Chinese and their crooked Japanese bosses will be there too, waiting.

Sony should be scolded for staging a national launch event with 80,000 units. If Sony and major retailers like Bic Camera or Yodobashi Camera are going to participate in launch day festivities like today, police need to be present.

Japan PS3 launch quantity slashed again -- will it ever end?

After seeing their precious PlayStation 3 launch number ravaged by component shortages and manufacturing woes, we thought our Japanese neighbors could finally feel confident in the paltry 100k share they'd been promised by Sony last month, but it looks like they've been betrayed once again. Turns out that Sony will only have 80k of the elusive PS3s prepped by the November 11th for the Japanese launch, due to another component woe. With pretty much every available pre-order slot in the country already snapped up by next-gen hopefuls, and even some of those orders on the fritz, it looks like the best chance you'll have to get the console in The Land of the Rising Sun next month will be to line up outside a non-pre-order retailer and hope for the best. Dress warm!

This weekend PlayStation 3 developer aldostools has made available a PS3 Game Updates v1.0 homebrew application which allows you to identify and download updates for video game backups. UPDATE: PS3 Game Updates v1.04 has been released, which includes several fixes. The master of the PS3Tools, aldostools, has just released another application, PS3 Game Updates v1.0. The new application that download PS3 game updates, was actually inspired by PS3 Game Updater 1.41. Of course, aldostools has added his own features to his application, like the ability to clearly see which games patches require 3.56+ firmware. There has been plenty more added as well, so be sure to take a look at the information below to find out more.

Need for Speed World (previously known as Need for Speed: World Online) is the fifteenth installment in the long-running racing video game Need for Speed franchise published by Electronic Arts. World was released worldwide on July 27, 2010. However, people who ordered the Need for Speed: World Starter Pack had an early "head-start" in the game, which started on July 20, 2010[1][2]

Gameplay

The game currently features 135 licensed cars consisting of tuners, muscle cars and exotics. Need for Speed fans assume that there are plans to add Tri-City from Undercover into the game.

On December 2010, car performance customization was made available to players. Players can win parts from lucky draw. Free players have a lower chance of winning a part compared to those who purchased SpeedBoost. All the in game cash bodykits from previous versions were removed. On March 31, 2011, Electronic Arts introduced a new game mode called Team Escape,[3] a cooperative version of a police pursuit where up to four players must race as a team driving from point A to point B while avoiding numerous cops. [4]On July 26, 2011, a new game mode called Treasure Hunt was released. In this mode, played during free roam, players collect fifteen gems around a randomly selected area once a day in the World to earn boosts of reputation and in-game cash. Players can earn high-end performance parts or additional power-ups after completing every hunt based on the day count of the streak (for example, if the player completes Treasure Hunt for twelve days in a row, they will receive a tier 1 pro performance part).[5]All players that had the old skill points invested got skill mods corresponding with the skills they had invested points in. 3-star (highest) skill mods can be won from lucky draws or purchased through card packs. One-star mods are purchasable for in game cash.

To continue the game, the player had to purchase the Need for Speed World Starter Pack. To celebrate that, the game was made free-to-play and the level cap was removed.[7]

Cars

Although players can buy cars with money earned in the game, most cars require spending real money (known in the game as SpeedBoost) to purchase them. Juggernaut cars are specially heavy cars made for Team Escape and all of them require SpeedBoost to buy. Treasure Hunt Edition cars can detect the 15 gems on the main map making the Hunt easier; these also require SpeedBoost to buy. As of August 21, 2012 car classes were introduced discarding the other 3 tier system. SpeedBoost only cars often have a high performance advantage over in-game cash cars:

Need for Speed World has received generally mixed reviews by critics. On Game Rankings, the game holds a score of 63.83%,[8] while on Meta critic , World holds a score of 62, meaning "mixed or average reviews".[9]

The highest praise of the game came from GamingXP, which commented that "The game feels like a combination of previous Need for Speed games except the single player has been cut off. Add some role-play elements and you have a racing MMO."[15] PC Format gave a somewhat mediocre review in their October 2010 issue, concluding that the game "feels like a missed opportunity."[16] Euro gamer commented that "It's a real shame that the MMO aspect of World is effectively a needlessly elaborate lobby."[17] In November 2012 the Game passed the mark of 20 Million registered users."[18]

PS3 Slim and console rebranding

Following speculation that a 'slim' model was in the works, Sony officially announced the PS3 CECH-2000 model on August 18, 2009 at the Sony Gamescom press conference.[38]As part of the release for the slim model, the logo was changed from the "Spider-Man font" and capitalized PLAYSTATION 3 to a more traditional PlayStation- and PlayStation 2-like 'PlayStation 3' logo with "PS3" imprinted on the console. Along with the console and logo redesign, the boot screen of all consoles changed from "Sony Computer Entertainment" to "PS3 PlayStation 3", with a new chime and the game start splashscreen being dropped.

There are several original PlayStation 3 hardware models, which are commonly referred to by the size of their included hard disk drive: 20, 40, 60, 80 or 160 GB.[21][61][64][65] All models support software emulation of the original PlayStation,[66][67] but support for PlayStation 2 backward compatibility has continually diminished with later models and the last model to advertise integrated backward compatibility was the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle.[68][69] All models, excluding the 20 GB model, include 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. [71] In terms of hardware, the 80 GB model released in South Korea is identical to the 60 GB model released in the PAL regions, except for the difference in hard drive size.[72]

Like the South Korean and European models, the North American 80 GB (2007) model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip.[68][68] The 40 GB, 80 GB (2008) and 160 GB models have two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models and do not include multiple flash card readers, SACD support,[74] or any backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games.[68]No official Wi-Fi or flash memory card readers were ever released by Sony for the 20 GB system, although Sony had plans to do so.[78]It was rumored that the Cell processors in the third-generation PS3s (40 GB, 2008 80 GB and 160 GB) would move from a 90 nm process to the newer 65 nm process,[79] which SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai later confirmed,[80] and later to 45 nm.

Slim model

The redesigned, slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the "PS3 Slim" and officially branded "PS3") features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB,[44][45] 250 GB or 320 GB[44][45] hard drive and is 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model,[38][82][83] or one third of the original PS3 model. The PS3 Slim no longer has the "main power" switch like the previous PS3 models, similar to redesigned slimline PlayStation 2. Support for emulation to play PS2 titles is not present in the Slim version, however shortly after the release of the PS3 slim, Sony announced a new series of PS2 remasters called Classics HD as in PS2 and PSP titles remastered in HD for the PS3 with trophies added and sometimes PlayStation Move compatibility.[38]The PS3 slim was officially released on September 1, 2009 in North America and Europe and on September 3, 2009 in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.[38]Although no North American bundles have been announced for the 250 GB PS3 slim, it is sold as a stand-alone console in North America.[94]

In July 2010, Sony announced two new sizes of Slim PS3, 160 GB and 320 GB, with the 120 GB model being discontinued in Japan.[45][96] The 320 GB model is to be available in North America only as part of a bundle with PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye and a copy of Sports Champions,[95] and in Europe with PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye and a demo disc.[96]

Super Slim model

In September 2012, Sony announced that a new slimmer PS3 redesign (CECH-4000) was due to be released in late 2012 and that it would be available with either a 250 GB or 500 GB hard drive.[97]

In PAL regions, the 250 GB model is not available; a model with 12 GB of flash memory (CECH-4000A) is available in its place.[98][99][98] In the UK, the 500 GB model was released on September 28, 2012,[98] while the 12 GB model was made available on October 12, 2012.[98]

This version has a sliding disc cover rather than the slot-loading drive found on previous PlayStation 3 consoles.

Video game systems are more notably referred to as gaming consoles. Some of the most popular video game systems include PlayStation (the entire series), Xbox (the entire series), Nintendo (the entire series) and Sega Genesis.

The very first console, PlayStation, was released back in 1994. The games were published on CDs and any PlayStation game could be played on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3. PlayStation 2 was released in North America in 2000 and PlayStation 3 was released in North America in November of 2006. Nintendo: Nintendo has released quite a few different video game consoles in their gaming history. In 1989, the Game Boy, a handheld system, was released by Nintendo.

The PlayStation 3 (Japanese: プレイステーション3, Hepburn: Pureisutēshon Surī?, officially abbreviated as PS3[5]) is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan,[6] with international markets following shortly thereafter.[7][8][9]. Major features of the console include its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network,[10] its multimedia capabilities,[11] connectivity with the PlayStation Portable,[12] and its use of the Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage medium.[13]

Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 3 (then marketed as PLAYSTATION 3[14]) to the public on May 16, 2005 at the E3 2005 conference,[15] along with a 'boomerang' shaped prototype design of the Sixaxis controller.[16] A functional version of the system was not present there,[17] nor at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2005,[18] although demonstrations (such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots [17]) were held at both events on software development kits and comparable personal computer hardware.[17][18] Video footage based on the predicted PlayStation 3 specifications was also shown (notably a Final Fantasy VII tech demo).[19] The initial prototype shown in May 2005 featured two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports;[20] however, when the system was shown again a year later at E3 2006, these were reduced to one HDMI port, one Ethernet port and four USB ports, presumably to cut costs.[21][22] Two hardware configurations were also announced for the console: a 20 GB model and a 60 GB model, priced at US$499 (€499) and US$599 (€599), respectively.[21] The 60 GB model was to be the only configuration to feature an HDMI port, Wi-Fi internet, flash card readers and a chrome trim with the logo in silver.[21] Both models were announced for a simultaneous worldwide release: November 11, 2006 for Japan and November 17, 2006 for North America and Europe.[23]

On September 6, 2006, Sony announced that the PAL region PlayStation 3 launch would be delayed until March 2007, due to a shortage of materials used in the Blu-ray drive.[24] At the Tokyo Game Show on September 22, 2006, Sony announced that it would include an HDMI port on the 20 GB system, but a chrome trim, flash card readers, silver logo and Wi-Fi would not be included.[25] Also, the launch price of the Japanese 20 GB model was reduced by over 20%,[26] and the 60 GB model was announced for an open pricing scheme in Japan.[26] During the event, Sony showed 27 playable PS3 games running on final hardware.[27]

Sony PlayStation 2 first showed its face in July 2000 and was already competing with the Xbox Arcade and the Nintendo DS. Later on, Sony released a model for PlayStation 2 that was a slim edition, thus making the console look sleek and cool. The emphasis for the PS2 stayed on PlayStation memory cards, that gave the gamer the possibility of saving the game at any time. The PS3 Slim is currently the latest PlayStation for sale and is at war with the Xbox 360 Elite for some years now, these titans are ruling the game markets, fighting for supremacy. It is all about the games and individual preferences.
