Around me, in my dreamland state, I saw magnificent fields, glistening with beauties that no pen could describe—no artist's pencil picture.

There is a harvest—it is yours.

A life well spent yields a rich legacy that animates its owner with great joy.

You are now on the glorious pathway to spirit life.

During my dying moments I was impressed with this grand truth, that which you sow, you shall also reap.

I have since learned that good deeds or acts for the amelioration of the destitute and the advancement of humanity in the scale of morality, intelligence and happiness, generate an influence that refines the spirit and prepares it for an exalted position in the spirit world.

I was finally awakened, amid the transcendent beauties of the spirit world, surrounded by my friends, while nearby stood a choir of little children who sang a sweet song of welcome.

The scene was grand indeed.

My senses were dazzled, as it were, by the grandeur manifested on all sides. I had travelled, as it were, the pathway that leads from earth to spirit life and had arrived at my journey's end. Your life, said one, has been a continual summer, productive of grand results. Your life, said another, has been a continual autumn, everbearing ripe fruits and ever dispensing to the poor. Your life, said a third, has been a continual winter, wherein your garnered stores have ever been open to those who required assistance from your hand. Your life, said a fourth, has been a continual spring, constantly sowing and preparing for a grand harvest, which you will now reap. Your life, said the fifth, has been like a sparkling fountain where the weary come to quench their thirst.

The cup of my happiness was indeed full. I had a taste of heaven then.

True, the streets were not paved with gold, I did not see Jesus. I did not behold God, nor his winged angels. I saw no one thrumming harps or singing psalms around a throne. Everything was natural.

The spirits around me had once lived on earth.

None of them had ever seen the God the various churches worship. No one could find a hell burning with fire and brimstone where wretched creatures could be punished forever. They had seen desolate places, sterile and barren, destitute of all vegetation, to which certain disreputable characters gravitated when the change called death occurred. They said that abode was wretched beyond the power of tongues to describe, but the spirits there were gradually emerging from their deplorable state and advancing to higher planes of life.

I now fully realise the benefits derived from leading a life on earth devoted to the best interests of humanity.

Self is only a minute, integral part of a vast ocean of individualised lives, and he who lives for himself exclusively, gradually isolates himself by natural repulsion from all others—his selfishness repels everything that is beautiful.

The air you breathe is imbued with a philanthropic spirit—the water you drink is the very embodiment of benevolence—the beautiful flowers send forth their perfumes on the wings of the winds to be inhaled by all—in fact, the material world is impartial in its bestowments. Nature smiles on all alike.

To be selfish then is to be unlike Nature, resulting finally in complete isolation from all her rich treasures in the spirit world. This is a natural result, flowing from grand, immutable laws. He whose life is barren of good results gravitates to a plane exactly corresponding with his interior nature or aspirations.

Even the aspiration to do good with no power to carry out your noble purposes is attended with grand results to the spirit.

In giving an account of my prenatal development and of the transit of my spirit to this sphere of existence, I hope I have imparted a lesson that will benefit humanity.

I would exhort all to banish selfishness from their hearts, as they would a poisonous serpent from their presence, and they need not fear the future—it will be bright and glorious!

JESUS who is the angel of the lord?

In Letters from a Spirit, the unknown spirit author offers an account of actual experience, covering more than a year of the new or spiritual life, in the desire and hope of correcting the crude theories and misconceptions prevalent, concerning the state beyond—

Let us go back to the beginning—the One, I Am, Jah, Jehovah, God, for He is the Only Uncreate and hence the Source of All Creation.

In the words of the Christ, God is a Spirit—

A Spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Ye have neither seen His shape or heard His voice. No one hath seen the Father at any time. The only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath seen him—and so on, indefinitely.

This will suffice as to the personal appearance of the Jehovah, for Christ expressly declares many times that He, Who was with Him before the world was, alone had seen Him.

No less the record reads—

And God talked with Moses, as friend with friend. Also, that he spoke to Abraham, and to many others, in the course of the Old Testament. But it is also true that no one has heard His voice or seen His shape.

The Universal Spirit of Life, pervading, creating and sustaining all things, flows from the Uncreate, the Jehovah, and nothing can have existence, but through this influx.

In the days when all avenues of approach to the natural world were open, the appearance of angels was not a matter of surprise.

There was nearly open intercourse between the spiritual and material worlds.

But neither spirit or angel was suffered or desired to go where they had no cause or business, for the Kingdom of God is a Kingdom of uses, and you do not waste your strength in deeds without purpose.

When it became necessary for a special messenger to convey a truth or give direction, the spiritual influx or the inpouring of the Divine Life filled the person chosen for this service to the utter exclusion of the character of the individual, and the angel speaking spoke as of himself and was received by the hearers as the very presence and voice of God.

The Father quickeneth whom He will to do His errands. The difference, as we are taught, between this inspiration and that of the Christ is that, whereas in the one case, this influx was but the occasional gift in the Lord, He, being of the Father, that is, His inmost being or soul was of the direct life of God and hence divine, the Spirit always abode in Him. It was given to Him without measure. He was uncreate, as to the inmost or life, though He was created, as to the human nature.

He was human and divine in one, the divinity in humanity, the Uncreate in created Nature. He had life in Himself, He laid it down of Himself, He had power to lay it down and to take it up again.

When the earthly manifestation of His power was over and He had finished the work and He was glorified with the glory, which He had before the world was, He became the only form of God that we shall ever know, as He is the Divine in a human form.

He does not appear to any unless it may be the Angels of the Inmost Heaven. He is the media through which by His unity with the Uncreate, All Spirit and Life flows. In this sense, the Mediator, making it possible for the Divine Life to flow into our degraded, debased human nature.

In these spiritual and heavenly worlds—or rather states of being, the same media is necessary.

We are all being taught of God, but by means suited to our needs and capacities.

As one could not impress pure mathematical truths on a child's understanding, without illustration by lines, angles, arcs and circles, all the paraphernalia of geometrical signs, so we, mere babes or beginnings of life, need the signs to express to us the truths—or rather to bring them into the scope of our capacity. It is a common form of speech on earth that Truth is One, but the fact is that while there is but One Way, Truth and Life, the Infinite, which is not to be comprehended by the finite must be presented in innumerable forms and sub-divisions to be received by all.

The Inmost Heaven, we are allowed to believe, is of pure white light, and those who abide there are so purified, as to be fitted to receive and exist in that unendurable glory, but if we in our present condition should receive of that influx, we should simply shrivel like paper and be annihilated.

Hence for us, the Light is in all beautiful and lovely gradations suited to us though we know perfectly well that each coloured ray is but a part of the intense and blinding white, and so far, imperfect as a result though perfect as a means or part of the whole.

So of the divine life.

Though it is one, we can only receive it as we are able, and though to all eternity, the finite can never comprehend the Infinite, we are taught what is needful for us by signs and appearances. We have presentations of facts, truths—or parts of truths of the influx of Divine Life into sentient forms.

The child Christ was really an Angel of the Inmost Heaven who was able to so receive the Divine Life as to confer life and light on this occasion.

What happens to people with bad karma?

All souls will be taught the necessity for fuller knowledge.

It is necessary for you to know of the conditions of life in the spirit world. Fuller knowledge would save so many souls from so much that is not exactly terrifying, but very trying when you first come within the veil. There are all sorts of definite evils to be faced here even for those who do not have to undergo long training, and for those who must be more severely disciplined, the dangers and terrors are very great indeed.

All the terrors come from your life on earth―they take form and torment in every possible way.

You have no physical body to be hurt, but you can suffer just the same. There was something at the bottom of the old Calvinistic idea of a place of torment, only it means mental suffering.

There is no burning fire, only the remembrance of all the wrong done on earth scorches the soul like a real flame.

Some souls in the very sad places who have a terrible amount of bad Karma to work off have been there for hundreds of years. They cannot be helped much until the knowledge that they deserve their penance comes to them. Always near them are the powerful spirits from higher worlds, waiting and praying for that time to come because although these souls suffer terribly, it is not ordinary punishment, but a consequence of their own actions in past lives.

And in the fullness of time, they will work through and ultimately reach the higher spheres.

Is death a permanent change?

Either the dead may be annihilated and have no sensation of anything whatever—or there is a change and passage of the soul from one mode of existence to another.

If it is a privation of all sensation—or a sleep in which the sleeper has no dream, death would be a wonderful gain, for thus all the future appears to be nothing more than a single night. But if on the other hand death is a renewal, to me the sojourn would be admirable.

The judges there do not condemn to death, and in other respects those who live there are happier than those that are here, and are henceforth immortal.

Why did God create the world?

They, who are dead to the world, are yet of the world a part and will ever hold the magnetic chord of earthly conditions. They cannot possibly break them—they may become finer and the tissue may be lost to earthly gaze, yet they will ever be connected and will be helpers in the great work of the world's reform—for it is their world and as such belongs to them. Though they may visit, inhabit and admire other worlds, yet this world is their home. The earth is their Mother, and they will bless her, for they cannot do otherwise.

Our Father is the Universe, and by Him and through Him, they are being educated and unfolded to learn the wonderful and glorious revealments He is making.

Many define conscience as the capacity to determine between right and wrong. This is to some extent a true definition, but we must remember that that capacity is so overclouded and warped by circumstances that we are more or less insane in regard to right and wrong. We are more or less distorted in our mental vision. Conscience is, nevertheless, at work beneath all the madness or error that overclouds our moral vision.

Deep down in the recesses of the soul, the voice of conscience is ever crying for deliverance from the weight of sin and wretchedness that presses upon it. Sooner or later, it asserts its right to be heard.

OF GOD, IN HIS WORKS

What is the Great Power that formed and sustained all things? and Who is still framing new worlds and universes of worlds. This great Unknown and Unseen Being, so constantly at work, never tiring, is in our midst. He pervades all space. He is everywhere―He is nowhere. He is in the highest heavens―He is in the lowest hell. He is All-wisdom, All-love, so great, worlds and universes are evoked from His thought!

God everywhere, yet nowhere. Seeming contradiction, yet perfectly true.

He is a Mighty Magician, an incomprehensible being, so wise, so great, so good, so full of love for all things, only to be found in His works, yet never absent from them.

In the manifold gifts He bestows upon us, He is there.

In the air we breathe, in the food we eat, God is manifested. Myriads and myriads, yet more myriads multiplied until the mind fails to follow the idea of worlds are dependent on Him―He sustains, He pervades them with His pure spirit. Here―there―everywhere—God is, God is.

And let Him create to all eternity, still His spirit will extend to these new worlds and His watchful and loving care will be over them. From the fullness of His own love, He endows, blesses His creatures—He has no higher happiness than this.

His wisdom creates spheres and peoples them with organic life and gradually develops in each one higher and higher forms.

When a climax is reached creation stops, but progression goes on and the love-principle comes into more immediate action.

This system of progression, designed by the All-wise at the beginning is the way He takes to spread the blessings of His love on the countless myriads He creates.

None will be finally miserable. God could not, would not, have it so. All however erring ultimately emerge from their sad, dark and terrible places and realise the beauty and holiness of the God-principle hidden, but not dead within them.

This Great Power that pervades everything is the essence or God-principle of life or motion. This subtle essence is the Light of Life―a portion of deity―

The boundless sphere of His power means that He has always been a Creator.

Boundless space, like eternity, has no end, so that creations, like eternity, may go on forever.

The Great Centre, the Fountain whence this Divine Essence flows, is God.

Not a personal being, yet containing and originating in Himself all the qualities, the passions, the feeling—

All the wisdom and love that go to design and form so many worlds and fill them with such beautiful creations both animate and inanimate.

You know there are unnumbered universes and stars to your confined vision and you know that the fixed stars you look upon from our little earth are in reality centres of other solar systems.

All had their origin in the same way from the same Great Fount of Light—God. And far more than you can picture are pursuing their equal course in regions too remote for us to obtain the slightest glimpse of.

It is this magnetism of Deity, so unseen and unfelt, that brought about the changes that developed worlds out of the darkness. This light, shining in the darkness brought beautiful creations gradually into existence.

If you can realise to your satisfaction what constitutes a flower's fragrance or the life-principle you destroy when you crush an insect, then you may with equal satisfaction find out what constitutes deity.

The same life-principle that pervades the insect and the flower brought worlds into existence. The God who could make the one could just as easily make the other.

Nothing is impossible with God.

The thought of deity is the only matter used in the creation of the multitudinous spheres that crowd in space.

He is a All-pervading, All-penetrating, and yet unknown to each one of us.

But though we do not know Him we know His works and we know to a certain extent how they originated.

Has He not said His thoughts are not as our thoughts?—neither are His ways like our ways. God's thoughts are not like our thoughts.

The way in which these stupendous works are carried out, the simplicity, the beauty, the order of the whole arrangement is perfect and complete in every part.

God, the Great First Cause of All, sent forth His light, His essence, bid it work, animating the chaotic masses of darkness. As this penetrated them, they condensed and hardened. Still further did the Light go on in its work—after hardening, it penetrated what it had condensed, broke it up and made other kinds of formations. This Light, this essence, working in and through its Great Creator, continued on steadily, effecting the wondrous changes that led to the present results.

The thought that originated so many, such various beauties retained its central situation, as the soul does in our bodies—The Light evolved from Thought did the work.

Is God thought? He is. What is thought? Thought is inspiration. It is the essence or Light of God in your soul. In Him, it is much more, much grander, nobler, diviner.

We partake in a very, very slight degree, of the nature of God's thoughts in our own thoughts, for through them, He originates whatever we have of new and novel conceptions on our plane.

God is the impersonation of All-wisdom, All-love and All-knowledge, so our teachers say, He may rather be considered as the Source or Fount whence these things flow, for He is certainly not a personal deity.

He can give from His fount all that is needful to all parts of his many universes, and still, there will be no lack of supply.

His Light pervades all things.

It can penetrate into the darkest and deepest abysses of creation, into the lowest and most degraded human mind.

Christianity has always taught that God is a being to be referred to in troubles and difficulties, that help can be obtained from Him to sustain and support in such cases. This was good, as far as it went.

But how far short of the real and tangible benefits we might obtain from Him if we understood more clearly the true nature and power of the Great Unknown and Misunderstood Principle that rules our planet in connection with all other worlds or spheres.

You are a miniature microcosm of the deity. You are possessed of the same powers, the same feelings, the same elements for thought, the same undying life-principle, the same capabilities of action—Ye are gods was not said in a figurative sense. We are all gods in the making.

When we have developed higher and higher in the scale of progression, we likewise may create and multiply creations from His thought plane. Spirit will be etherealised into still more ethereal spirit, still again refine, over and over the purification will be renewed until the Godspirit is attained, and when this takes place, you may be said to merge into deity and become part and parcel of the divine and mystical essence, and united to it share and assist, devise and execute works, wondrous, noble, grand, beneficent, like those we now from our low and untaught sphere admire with awe and veneration.

You cannot see God, for He is not a being to be seen, but a principle pervading all space.

At the same time developed humanity will attain to that perfection of holiness and love when entirely pervaded by this God-principle, merged as it were in Deity. Nothing is impossible to us. The God who formed us as us foresaw His creation would rise to this height and become like Him. And we shall continue to accelerate the speed of our progress the higher we advance because more light can reach us from the Great Fountain of All-progress, the Almighty Framer and Governor of the Universe.

We are designed for higher life and nobler purposes—we have more work to do, more good to perform, more to receive—

We are the crowning creation of God, the ultimatum, the finishing stroke to our great work on this earth of ours, as we are on every other. Humanity is the perfection of all—the animal, vegetable and the mineral combined, superior to the whole in possessing the soul or God-principle in us that is to develop up to the God who gave it.

God's mind is unlike ours—His is the Mind of All. It is impossible for us to understand God as He really is.

As we progress higher and higher in His light, becoming more and more imbued with it, more and more like Him, He will still be an unknown God to us, for He is everywhere, yet nowhere.

Have not all animals progressed in the ascending ratio from the first simple mollusca and infusoria?

Has not vegetation progressed with them to supply their wants—from the mosses and ferns to our present fauna and flora? If God so ordained and arranged in His wisdom for animals and vegetables, why should He not finish His work with humanity—His masterpiece?

Is it any degradation to humanity that it has developed up to its present high standard from so low a one?

By our beautiful formation, so like, and yet so unlike the animals, we are fitted, admirably fitted, for what we were designed.

Every organ was brought to its highest perfection in us, and in addition to the instincts of the animal, reason and a soul were added. Why should this be impossible to a power that had already done so much?

It was the work of ages upon ages to develop the other forms of life, so that we might spring from them perfect in body to receive his mental gifts.

After we had received our endowments, it took ages yet to develop the embryos in us and show us our own superiority over the animal kingdom.

Gradually, the light entered our souls. Like a newborn babe, we were unconscious of the gifts we possessed, and ignorant as a child would now be of their value unless taught by its parents and tutors, for we must know that every individual child receives this Godspirit now, just as much as the first developed ape or man did.

Reason is quite another thing. That we have cultivated for ourselves.

Instinct first supplied its place, but as the soul shone forth in us, higher thoughts and aspirations arose and we cultivated the intellect into its present state of progress.

God, in all His works, sends down His divine afflatus to us, and it pervades all the extended regions of space, benefits and beautifies wherever it penetrates. See the beauty, order, love, that designed and perfected our earth and its inhabitants. Read the book of Nature with profit and facility and you yourself will be taught to rightly appreciate His own high eminence in the structure—the crowning and finishing touch of the vast edifice.

To think of God in His works—the multitude and infinity of which should fill your mind with awe, wondering admiration exalts and benefits your soul. To dwell on His greatness brings you more nearly into communion with Him and fills you with a portion of His own Pure Spirit. You are benefitted from the smallest approach you can make to this Mind of God—

There is no better method for you to pursue in your endeavours to progress than studying Him in His works.

You may say you cannot understand much that you see, much that you hear in relation to them.

True, you cannot. But none are so ignorant that they cannot see beauty in a flower, a leaf, a human eye, a human hand—

You can do more, for you can see, not the beauty only, but their appropriateness, fitness, adaptedness for their various uses.

Can anything be more wonderfully and judiciously contrived than the eye? So delicately organised to receive impressions from surrounding objects at the same time, so carefully protected from injury by its judicious position in the head and its covering lid and eyelashes?

Did not the thought that originated it show the highest wisdom? And can you not find profit and pleasure combined in thinking about these things? Or are you so accustomed to the offices and appearance of this organ, that you have ceased to regard it? If so, refresh your ideas on this point by visiting some institution for the blind and you will then see more plainly the blessing you enjoy without appreciating its possession.

Then your hand, have you ever thought about its varied uses, its beautiful adaptedness to the numerous offices it is required to perform?

Or have you allowed that, also, to pass by unheeded, playing out its part in a regular and methodical manner, as you might require its services, your willing docile slave to do your bidding—

You, entirely unconscious of the wondrous beauty of the organism that thus works for you, accept its services and never pause for a moment to dwell on the wisdom and love that designed it, to consider what that Being must be who so multiplies His benefits to all that we take them as a right and entirely overlook and neglect the giver?

Some of us may be attracted by the wonders of the heavens and look there for evidence of God's power and thoughtful love, and we may fancy it is more mightily displayed there—or again, others may examine the beauties of the deep and see its workings there.

Any, everywhere, you will find them—all display in an equal degree, the power of thought, wisdom, beneficence of the Being who planned them. In the smallest blade of grass, in the tiniest flower, apparently so useless, but yet which has its office, the same careful thought is traced and in the same perfection.

God, the Great Thought of the Universe, sees no difference in men—He, in creating all His bountiful provisions for the happiness of humankind, intended them for all, equally. Go forth into the world of Nature and find God there. Note well the formation and design apparent in every portion of His works—the beneficent kindness and overflowing love that planned the whole.

The Omnipresence of Deity, not only controls and guides our actions, but the vital, living, acting principle in all Nature.

God everywhere—wonderful thought! Incapable of our understanding, yet when looked upon by our simple intuitions in a natural state, easily understood.

See and feel the presence of the Great Spirit in every effort of Nature, not only in the rushing wind or the storm, but in all the beautiful outpourings of His goodness—in the flowers, the leaves, the gently flowing stream, the shady forest. In all and every bountiful gift, recognise the presence of the Great Power who created them for your pleasure.

Take the gifts, as they are offered to you, use them as far as your needs may require and leave the rest free to all God's other creatures. God with you, for this Great Mind of the Universe pervades all Nature and all space.

His thought and His care are great, none too high, none too lowly, to be its recipients.

Everything good and great comes from Him.

The Soul of the Butterfly

THE soul of the butterfly, which will become a finished, matured form is as much concealed while it creeps upon the earth in the shape of a caterpillar, as when lying dormant in its chrysalis―it is as blind, but it has some senses through which outer impressions are conveyed to it.

Let the chrysalis answer to the dormant state in which, for a longer or shorter space of time, the soul must lie in its transition stage toward its new birth. For not instantly are the interlacings, which bind the soul to its earthly frame ever broken.

Now the caterpillar can move about in search of food to supply the elements from which the new or true form will be built through the metamorphoses going on within it—our caterpillar can feel.

It is covered all over with bristling hairs, which are like papilla to convey intelligence of every touch to its perception, but approach it, menace it with a stick, it does not stir unless one of those feelers are touched, touched either by the object or by an unusually strong wave of air. And it curls up the same in the damp or in the rain.

When it has become a butterfly, menace him again with your stick. Does it wait for you to touch it with it? It can see now as well as feel.

As it wings its flight through the palpitating ether, does life seem the same to him flooded with the warm sunlight, with leafy retreats and multitudinous sounds, as when deaf and blind it crawled in the damp mould? Yet it is the same world, only it now is alive to it all—it has new powers and is free to use them to their fullest extent—it lives upon a higher plane than does his fellow-worm. It would not be possible now for it to feel existence as it once did in its old shell! And if it could, through any one of those feelers made to sense outward things, communicate with his brother caterpillar—

Do you suppose the caterpillar could at all comprehend what a different life it was sensed outside of his shell prison? Does this figure convey a comprehensible fact to your mind?
