GFiber Wi-Fi 7 explained: MLO, 10 Gig Ports, WPA3, and Multi-Gig Performance

Wi-Fi 7 is the latest wireless standard, but what makes the GFiber experience different? This Q&A guide is for current customers and those considering GFiber multi-gig service who want a technical breakdown of the new features of GFiber's premium, custom-engineered, multi-gig hardware product.

What new features does Wi-Fi 7 have?

We designed this GFiber hardware from the ground up, so you know we included all the heavy-hitting features:

MLO (Multi-Link Operation): This is a new Wi-Fi 7 technology. We’ve enabled MLO between the router and the mesh extender by default, which means you can get multi-gig speeds from the far side of your home over Wi-Fi. We’ll enable it for customer devices soon, but that’s not ready for primetime yet.
320 MHz channels: Creates a bigger, wider lane on the data highway, allowing a massive amount of information to move much faster and give you quicker loading and higher capacity.
4K QAM: Efficiently packs more data into every Wi-Fi signal, which boosts network speed and performance for a faster, more fluid experience, particularly for streaming video.
6 GHz band: This band is a new, wide-open lane that newer devices can use to bypass the traffic on the older 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, leading to a clearer and more reliable connection.

Can I use my own router (or do you support “Bridge mode”)?

We generally recommend using the GFiber Wi-Fi equipment since we custom-engineered it for the GFiber network to optimize the quality of service and your overall experience, but the short answer is yes. Customers can plug their own router directly into the Fiber Jack (ONT) and start using it right away. And you don’t need to enable Bridge mode in the GFiber app! You can simply start using your own router anytime you’d like. You can learn more about using your own router here.

What are the Wi-Fi 7 router port speeds (2.5G vs 10G)?

Few routers have as plentiful a port configuration as GFiber. Our Wi-Fi 7 router includes:

One 10 gig WAN port (connects to the Fiber Jack)
One 10 gig LAN port (great for a switch or high-end PC)
Three 2.5 gig LAN ports

Does Wi-Fi 7 improve latency or gaming performance?

Yes, absolutely. Specifically, thanks to Multi-Resource Units (smarter traffic flow for optimized use of bandwidth) and MLO, you’ll experience near-zero lag even in homes full of devices getting online all at once. Being able to send data across multiple bands simultaneously results in a significant reduction in latency compared to Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, which makes a real difference for cloud gaming, or real-time apps where jitter matters.

Why should anyone get the Edge 8 Gig service?

Edge 8 Gig isn’t for everybody. For typical needs like browsing and streaming, you won’t feel a big difference compared to Home 3 Gig. But Edge 8 Gig is a dramatic change-maker for high-usage customers or those wanting the added peace of mind provided by the battery backup[1] and uptime guarantee.[2] Creative professionals (photographers, editors, content creators, etc.) moving gigs of video files, software developers, home based businesses, remote tech professionals, pro gamers, or homes with multiple gamers downloading massive updates simultaneously will all see major upsides with Edge 8 Gig. It’s about the time-to-complete. For gamers in particular, you can download a 100 gig game update in minutes rather than hours. It’s overkill for some, but it absolutely comes in handy when you need it. We’re continuing to test 20 Gig with Wi-Fi 7, and the use cases from those customers have been really interesting to see.

Why isn’t Wi-Fi 7 available with our Core 1 Gig service?

It’s about matching the right hardware to the right product. Wi-Fi 6E is still incredibly capable for speed. We prioritized Wi-Fi 7 for Home 3 Gig and Edge 8 Gig because those are the products where the previous Wi-Fi equipment generation was actually limiting the wireless performance and preventing in-home networks from fully reaching multi-gig speeds over Wi-Fi. We’re always evaluating our hardware to ensure we match the product to the right device to ensure we deliver the best wireless experience in your home.

Is Wi-Fi 7 actually useful right now? Which devices can use it?

That’s a fair question to ask right now. But the short answer is yes, it’s useful for a couple of key reasons:

The devices are here: Most, if not all, smartphones and computers made in 2025 or later have the Wi-Fi 7 chipset. Additionally, starting with the Pixel 8, Galaxy S24, and iPhone 16 lineups, many new devices already support it. If you upgrade your phone or laptop soon, you’ll be glad your Wi-Fi is ready for the future.
Performance and congestion management even with older gen devices: Even if you have Wi-Fi 6 or 6E devices and not Wi-Fi 7, the router’s increased capacity and backhaul improvements (especially with mesh extenders) make your entire network more stable, even with dozens of devices online. We’ve even seen older devices (Wi-Fi 6 or older) perform better at a distance when connected to the Wi-Fi 7 network compared to older-generation routers.[3]

Is this using an XGS-PON network?

Our multi-gig products, including those with Wi-Fi 7, run on our XGS-PON network architecture. This infrastructure is what allows us to deliver symmetrical multi-gig speeds.

Will existing multi-gig customers be upgraded to Wi-Fi 7?

If you’re a current customer upgrading to the Edge 8 Gig product, you’ll get the new Wi-Fi 7 router automatically. If you already have a multi-gig product (like Home 3 Gig or Edge 8 Gig) with a Wi-Fi 6E router, call or chat with our customer support team and they’ll be glad to get you upgraded to Wi-Fi 7.

Can multi-gig get oversubscribed (i.e. if a whole neighborhood is taking 8 Gig won’t they see slowdowns during peak hours)?

Our network engineering team plans for this when deploying, or upgrading a network. If you’re being offered a GFiber product, rest assured the network is capable of supporting it.

What’s the firmware update schedule?

We’ve been rolling out 3-4 firmware updates a year for the router, including optimizations, new features, fixes and security patches. We gather feedback from several sources: direct from call and chat interactions, app reviews, online forums, and other customer feedback channels. Many of the suggestions we’ve received have already influenced our product roadmap. So please keep the feedback coming.

How does GFiber’s Wi-Fi 7 compare to other providers’ offerings?

What’s special about GFiber’s Wi-Fi 7 isn't just the spec sheet of our custom engineered equipment; it's our business model. We include this hardware (valued up to $1,699 for a mesh setup) standard with the service. We don't charge a monthly rental fee, a tech support fee, or make you sign a contract to get it. [4]

Does Wi-Fi 7 force WPA3 (Will this break my older smart home devices, or IoT)?

We considered this possibility and did thorough testing before launch. As a result, our router defaults 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to WPA2 and offers WPA3 transition should you want it. As you may already know, 6 GHz must be on WPA3 per the IEEE standard. This default setup ensures your IoT devices, printers, and EV chargers stay connected while your newer, high-performance devices can take advantage of 6 GHz and the latest security with WPA3. If you want to change security, you can toggle on 'WPA3 Transition Mode' in the GFiber app. This allows newer devices to use WPA3 on the lower bands while still letting older devices connect via WPA2.

What’s the real-world throughput on Wi-Fi 7?

We’re already seeing customers clock in over 3 Gbps using Wi-Fi 7, and Ookla speed tests are a great way to verify your device’s connection speed. The true speed benefit we’re seeing is the mesh extender using MLO backhaul with the router.[5] This is letting devices connected to the extender tap into 4 Gbps of bandwidth without running a wire through your attic or crawlspace. This means your gaming setup, connected to the mesh extender, can access maximum speeds without worrying about spotty Wi-Fi. Physics still applies (things like walls, distance, and device capability matter), but it’s a significant difference over the roughly 1.6 Gbps max we saw with Wi-Fi 6E.

Does Wi-Fi 7 hardware support mesh?

Yes, it does. The router works with our Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Extender. We use MLO for the wireless backhaul between the router and extender, which significantly improves speed and reliability compared to previous generations. Note that third-party access points (APs) or GFiber’s Wi-Fi 6E equipment aren’t compatible with the Wi-Fi 7 hardware.

Can I downgrade after upgrading?

Yes, you're welcome to downgrade at any time to a product currently offered at the time of your downgrade.

Are there data caps on multi-gig?

Never. We don't do data caps on any of our products.

Core 1 Gig has been $70 a month since 2012.[6] We don’t waste your time with short term discounts or complicated offers. In fact, we’ve done the opposite of what everyone expects from an ISP. In Des Moines, for example, we recently automatically upgraded 2 Gig customers to Home 3 Gig when we rolled out the faster product for the same price. We keep our pricing simple and stable, focusing on giving customers more value for the same price. The price you see (like $100 for 3 Gig, or $150 for 8 Gig) is the price you pay. We want to earn your loyalty.

Is the hardware actually custom, or is this just a rebranded generic router?

It is fully custom-engineered. We worked with a global hardware leader to build the GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router specifically to maximize your in-home Wi-Fi and wired experience with your GFiber network. Most retail mesh systems at this price point max out at 1 gig or maybe one 2.5 gig port. We designed this with a 10 gig WAN port (to handle the full fiber speed), a 10 gig LAN port, and three 2.5 gig LAN ports that let power customers push the network to the limit.

Does it support 6 GHz backhaul?

Yes, and it’s actually smarter than just a static 6 GHz backhaul. The router and mesh extender use Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for the backhaul link. Instead of relying on a single band (like just 6 GHz), MLO allows them to transmit data across multiple bands (like 5 GHz and 6 GHz) simultaneously. This means that even if you’re in a back bedroom connected to the extender, you can still get true multi-gig performance.

Can I self-install this?

For many customers, the answer will be yes. If your home already has a compatible 10 Gig Fiber Jack installed, you are eligible for a Self-Install Kit (SIK). In that case, we’ll send your kit for free within 1-3 business days, and you can use the GFiber app to guide you through the setup. If you don’t have the 10 Gig Fiber Jack yet, or if your home setup is complicated, we’ll send a technician to professionally install and optimize the network for you—at no extra cost.

Upload/download speed and device streaming claims are based on maximum wired speeds. Actual internet, Wi-Fi speeds, and Wi-Fi coverage are not guaranteed and can vary based on factors such as home or business size and layout, construction materials, hardware and software limitations, latency, packet loss, etc.

How GFiber in-home installation works

GFiber offers two installation paths to connect your home to our fiber-optic network: professional installation by a technician or a simple self-setup for eligible addresses. Both options include the necessary equipment, such as a Fiber Jack and an advanced Wi-Fi router, at no additional cost.[1]

Professional installation: What to expect

Professional installation is available for all GFiber customers. During this process, a technician visits your home to install the Fiber Jack and set up your router and whole home Wi-Fi network. The technician will also perform a battery of signature diagnostic tests to ensure performance meets GFiber’s high standards for speed, coverage and connectivity. The tech will also assess your home’s wiring and if eligible, hardwire your home office, gaming station or up to 2 other highest use areas for Home and Edge customers.

The role of the Fiber Jack

The Fiber Jack is a device mounted inside your home that translates our fiber-optic signal from the network into a connection your router can understand. GFiber owns and maintains this equipment, so there is no separate purchase required.

Step-by-step professional setup

Schedule your appointment: Pick a time at fiber.google.com; appointments typically last about two hours.
Fiber Jack installation: Your technician mounts the device on an interior wall, often near a standard electrical outlet. Have a preferred location for the Fiber Jack? Let your technician know and together you can discuss placement. If you live in an apartment complex, your Fiber Jack may be installed in a media closet.
Router activation: The technician connects the Wi-Fi router to the Fiber Jack using an Ethernet cable to activate your service.[2]
Connection confirmation: We’ll make sure your connection is live, verify performance meets or exceeds our standards and help you get into the GFiber App so you can manage your network.

Note: Someone 18 or older needs to be home for the appointment. There’s no installation fee for this service.

Our approach is all about moving fast, minimizing community disruption, staying in sync with local leaders, and leaving every neighborhood better connected.

GFiber works with local government to get it right for your city

Before a single foot of fiber optics goes in the ground, we work closely with city management to plan a process that meets community standards and local regulations. This means we're on the same page about permitting, traffic management, and safety before construction even starts.

Every city has its own regulations and requirements, along with climate and road conditions. We plan our construction work with these details in mind so we can finish safely and as quickly as possible with minimal disruptions for residents.

Installing fiber: Every neighborhood is special

We use a few different ways to get fiber to you, depending on what your area needs. These methods include:

Microtrenching: Our most used construction type—low-impact way of cutting narrow, shallow trenches.
Horizontal directional drilling: Creating a path under the ground without disturbing the surface.
Conventional open trenching: A standard trench open from the surface.
Aerial installation: Using existing utility poles.

How we get to you depends on local infrastructure, soil conditions, and existing utilities. We work with your local government to decide which approach is best for the community.

What is microtrenching and why does GFiber use it so often?

Microtrenching is a minimally invasive fiber construction technique that cuts a narrow, shallow channel along the edge of the road. We tuck a protective hollow tube inside the channel, pull the fiber through, and seal it up with specialized filler material.

Compared to conventional trenching, which can be at least eight inches wide and up to four feet deep, a microtrench is usually no wider than two inches and no deeper than two feet.[1] This means a street that might have taken days to finish can often be done in just hours.[2]

The benefits of microtrenching for residents

According to the Fiber Broadband Association, microtrenching can cut construction time by about a third compared to traditional methods—and costs about 80% less per linear foot.[3]

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, and NEW YORK, NY — March 11, 2026 — GFiber (formerly Google Fiber) and Stonepeak today announced that they have entered an agreement to combine GFiber with Astound Broadband, creating a leading independent fiber provider. The new company will be majority owned by Stonepeak, an investment firm specializing in infrastructure and real assets. Alphabet will remain a significant minority shareholder, reflecting its confidence in GFiber’s growth opportunity and leadership.

The combined business will be led by the existing GFiber executive team, utilizing their expertise in high-speed fiber innovation to manage the combined network footprint. The combination of GFiber’s high-growth metropolitan networks with Astound’s established infrastructure, team and capabilities creates a highly complementary, national network platform.

This agreement advances GFiber’s mission of redefining internet connectivity and represents a major step toward its goal of operational and financial independence. GFiber will have the external capital and strategic focus needed to accelerate its next phase of growth, expanding its customer-first approach and pioneering fiber technology across the country.

To get technical, internet speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps). The higher the number of megabits, the more information you can transfer every second. We designed our installation process to connect you to fast, reliable internet as easily as possible. Whether a technician does the work or you do it yourself, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

There are two ways to get started: professional installation and self-install. The exact steps depend on which internet product you choose or where you live. To see what’s available for your home, check availability of service at your address at fiber.google.com.

Choosing your installation path

Professional Installation: A technician handles the entire setup. This is the best choice if fiber is new to your neighborhood or if you want an expert to ensure your home is perfectly connected throughout your residence. Check out this video for an overview of the professional install process.

Self-Install: If your home is already "fiber-ready" and you’ve chosen a compatible internet product, you can get connected as quickly as the same day by choosing pick-up (where available in select markets) or have your kit delivered via express shipping (1–3 business days). Preparing your property

Before we connect your home, we need to make sure the ground is safe to work on. We coordinate with local utility companies to mark underground lines—like water or gas—with temporary paint or flags.

You don’t need to be home for this part.
Leave the markers in place until after your installation is finished.
Mark your own items: If you have an invisible dog fence or sprinkler system, please mark those yourself so our crews can avoid them.

Connecting to the network

Once the lines are marked, our crew brings a new fiber line to your home. They will install a small gray box called a Network Interface Unit (NIU) on the outside of your house. This is where the fiber enters your home. If we need to dig a small trench to bury the line, we will restore the area when we're done.

Setting up your equipment

If you choose professional installation, a technician will visit for an in-home appointment. They will install a Fiber Jack—the small device that brings the internet signal inside—and connect your Wi-Fi router.

How Long Does it Take to Install GFiber?

The timing depends on whether your home has been connected to GFiber before:

Already connected: If the fiber is ready, a professional installation appointment usually takes about 2 hours.

New connections: If we need to bring a new line to your house, it typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to complete the exterior work and utility marking.

We can’t always predict exactly when utility marking will be finished because it’s handled by independent local services, but we will keep you updated before, during, and after install.

Stay connected: Keep your current internet service active until your GFiber connection is up and running.
Clear the way: Make sure the technician has easy access to the area where the fiber line enters your home and the rooms where you use the internet most.

A multi-gig approach that puts customers first — next in internet starts in Iowa

When GFiber first brought gigabit speed to Kansas City in 2012, we didn’t just offer a faster internet connection; we established a new benchmark for what you should expect from your internet service provider.

Today, we’re doing it again. We’re thrilled to announce that Des Moines is officially our first market where multi-gig internet is the standard, and we’re rolling it out to customers at the same prices we’ve always had (in fact, some customers will be paying less per month!). At the same time, we are also leveling up our highest speed products to Wi-Fi 7, our most powerful Wi-Fi ever. This isn't just about more speed; it’s about continuing to create and add value, not just for the newest customers, but those that have always had GFiber. Happy Holidays, Wake Forest! GFiber is building big in North Carolina.

2025 has been a big year for us in North Carolina, and we’re closing the year out with a bang. GFiber is coming to Wake Forest! The town has approved an agreement paving the way for construction, and we can’t wait to get residents connected to America’s most celebrated internet.

This announcement comes on the heels of launching service in Holly Springs over the summer. Response has been amazing, and we expect to complete our construction in Holly Springs next year. We’ve loved being part of this community so far and we’re continuing to invest here, in Wake Forest and surrounding communities.

Construction in Wake Forest will start in the spring, and we expect to begin to offer service to residents there in the second half of 2026. 20 Gig: How our 25G PON investment shatters the limits of today's internet

When we launched our 20 Gig early access program, we set an audacious goal to break the 10 Gig barrier that limits existing broadband architectures. Today, we’re announcing a significant milestone in that journey: our latest 20 Gig installation of our new hardware, and a giant leap forward in delivering the network that leaves the status quo behind.

Bringing 20 Gig to life

This is about more than just rolling out our new GFiber 20 Gig ONT device. It highlights the tangible results of our strategic, long-term investment in 25G PON technology. As of now, due to this approach, ~90% of the homes and businesses in our network footprint are already 20 Gig capable. The deployment of this new, next-generation ONT is the key to unlocking that capacity for the home and enabling us to serve customers more broadly than ever before. It also means upgrading the experience for those already on the journey with us; we have several 20 Gig early access customers today, and we will be automatically upgrading them to this new hardware. As we ramp up operations for this new ONT, we expect to move 20 Gig out of our early access program and into a generally available product next year. That’s a really big deal!

Results of a real-world speed test performed on November 16, 2025, by a GFiber 20 Gig customer using the new GFiber 20 Gig ONT. Achieving symmetrical speeds of 19.9 Gbps download and 19.6 Gbps upload, the result—typical sample from multiple tests—validates GFiber’s strategic investment in a 25 Gig network foundation needed for future-proofing both residential power users and advanced commercial applications.

Beyond the 10 Gig Limit: A single, future-proof foundation for every user

This investment delivers truly future-proof speed and capacity, densifying our network without laying down new lines and driving down latency to support the coming tidal wave of multimodal AI growth, immersive video experiences, cloud computing, and more. This capability surpasses traditional XGS solutions (current 10 Gig PON technology) and any DOCSIS (cable internet) network.

What it means for customers

This level of performance is a dream come true for residential power users like Nathan, the newest GFiber 20 Gig customer (Nathan works for GFiber's parent company, Google), whose recent speed test is pictured above. But critically, this foundational leap also turbocharges our commercial product offering. Whether it’s supporting complex institutional research—like that led by Dean Kevin Truman at UMKC—or the next wave of enterprise innovation, our network is ready for whatever businesses and developers build next.

How GFiber is transforming cricket in Morrisville

Our small business blog series, Connected by GFiber, continues! This time we're featuring Jana Chellaperumal, owner of the Morrisville Raptors cricket team in North Carolina's Research Triangle region and former president of the Triangle Cricket League. Jana shares how GFiber's high-speed reliable internet supports the game of cricket.

When the Triangle Cricket League partnered with the Town of Morrisville in 2010 to grow the game in the region, the Town had the vision to expand how we serve our community that plays cricket. TCL had been a vital partner for growth and connecting the Town with opportunities to continue the vision. But we needed infrastructure that could connect our players, our fans, and our community on a global scale. Five years ago, when GFiber came to Church Street Park in Morrisville, it became the missing piece that transformed cricket in our region from a local interest into a robust international offering, seen from the Research Triangle to Bangladesh, India, and beyond.

I'm one of the owners and manager of the Morrisville Raptors of Minor League Cricket, and our home matches are played at Church Street Park in Morrisville. We have teams traveling from as far as New Jersey, Baltimore and Orlando to compete here. The Town hosts Major League Cricket matches that draw crowds from around the world. The enthusiasm translates to the success of the Triangle Cricket League. I'm proud that we've developed a program — more than 3,000 members strong — where young players can train alongside international professionals and set their sights on reaching the highest levels of the game.

And what makes it even more special is the high-speed fiber-optic internet infrastructure.

The streaming capabilities that GFiber provides changed everything for us. Today, thanks to outlets like the Minor League Cricket YouTube channel and Willow TV, matches reach viewers from around the world, from India to communities throughout North America. In the past three years alone, we've streamed more than 150 cricket matches, attracting 35,000 fans at our parks in Morrisville and nearly a quarter million online enthusiasts. When we hosted the recent MiLC playoff series featuring one of the world's top 10 cricket players, thousands watched live on YouTube. They weren't just passive viewers. They were engaged, commenting and celebrating throughout the games, and feeling connected from thousands of miles away.

This connectivity isn't just about entertainment. It's about opportunity. International talent now chooses to come play in Morrisville precisely because they know their families, their fans, and potential sponsors can watch them perform. Young players in our academy are motivated to push harder and dream bigger.

Parents watching from abroad can see their children's progress in real time. The broadcast transforms Church Street Park from a local field into a legitimate stage for professional cricket.

A True Partnership

Morrisville’s Town leadership understood early that a thriving community celebrates the interests and cultures of all its residents. Morrisville embraced cricket. Bryan Rhea, Athletics Program Manager for the Town of Morrisville, reflects on the journey: "About 16 years ago, there was a collaborative effort between the town and the Triangle Cricket League to provide space for local cricket clubs at Shiloh Park. Things evolved remarkably quickly from those humble beginnings into what you now see at Church Street Park, matches streamed to viewers across multiple countries around the world."

Without the Town's help, I don't think we could do what we're doing today. The collaboration between our organizations and the Town has been remarkable, from securing the initial space at Church Street Park to supporting multiple facility upgrades to recognizing the economic and cultural benefits cricket brings.

This commitment extends beyond cricket. When we needed reliable, high-speed internet to handle professional-grade streaming with multiple camera feeds and live reviews, GFiber delivered. But that same fiber also provides free wireless access for all park visitors, benefiting the entire community. It's infrastructure that serves everyone, from families enjoying a picnic, to kids playing soccer, and yes, passionate cricket players and fans.

The economic impact has been significant. "When Major League Cricket comes in, we see a huge uptick in fans," says Brandon Zuidema, Town Manager. "A lot of those are from out of town, and so they will come and stay in Wake County hotels and motels, and then they will also have their food and do some shopping here, so that's a really good opportunity for the community."

These dollars flow through the Wake County hospitality sector and are reinvested into our community, supporting continued improvements to our facilities and programs.

As we look to the future, we're excited about possibilities to expand streaming to additional facilities as they come online. But whatever comes next, it will be built on the foundation that GFiber helped create, a true fusion of technology and community that makes Morrisville a premier cricket destination.
