Sousou no Frieren

Imagine if you will an elf-form of the Doom Slayer, Frieren knows the tricks of the demons that haunt her world. Much of this series follows the lives of Frieren, Fern, and Stark on their adventures that go across lands. Occasionally on their journey, they will encounter a demon (and they are the most accurate portrayal demons, more on that later) that Frieren cannot ignore. She willingly enters battle with them, resulting in their defeat and erasure from Frieren's world. She also likes to get grimoires and what she sees as treasures.

Treating the demons as beings that thrive on the discord of others is the most accurate portrayal of demons. They are entities of evil, most of what they do causes strife and tears the human soul away from performing or doing what is good. They can hide behind what appears to look good but in reality are nasty beings who are damned beyond redemption. In other series of the Japanese, demons are treating more humanely which negates their namesake and sole purpose. This in return makes evil look appealing and not so bad, which should never apply to demons. The demon is an entity which cannot be sympathized with nor shown compassion; to do so, is already to sell your soul to the devil.

As a viewer, I encourage you to take the depiction of demons in Sousou no Frieren as the best portrayal of what a demon actually is. It is not human, but the worst evils you can think of.

A kid raised by robots on a lone planet gets discovered by a B-tuber who wants to nake it big. Shiki is a boy who just wants to make friends and Rebecca is just your average "try to make it big" girl. An unlikely friendship blossoms and after escaping his robot family "infected" with a virus. Rebecca takes Shiki to a galactic hub where he sees a giant figure known as "Mother". This entity is said to grant any request. Shiki makes it his mission to meet this giant lady.

A great ol' space adventure reminiscent of the early 80s and 90s. It's filled with action packed fighting and a story that is not as linear as you think it would. It has comedic events to break up the tragic moments that are present from time to time. It's a different taste for those bored with the usual isekai or other world tropes that are currently saturate the market.

Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai

What happens if you marry a robot that has no emotion and is serious 24/7? Such is the story with Takuma and his wife-robot, Miina. Now you would be right in being weirded out by this type of scenario, "Why marry his robot??? What does it do to marry a robot???" Well, sometimes the human mind cannot be explained by simple psychology nor will it ever be. This story follows the two as they experience the numerous opinions on their relationship and the implications it had. The reactions to what only can be described as "new ground" is an understatement. Takuma's wife is a robot, and acts differently than a normal human wife would. She does not understand the basic emotions of humans, and sometimes shows it in the interactions with Takuma. Miina, however, seems to be getting the hang of being somebody's wife.

Miina herself seems to have taken the responsibility of being a wife very seriously. She, from the very start of the series, seems to have taken an reciprocated interest in Takuma. So much in fact that she memorizes many of his favorite dishes, takes pictures of him , and on several occasions taken action to preserve the welfare of Takuma. Who could ask more for from a robot-wife? She clearly has being a wife hands down than the normal woman can do (pun intended)!

Beserk: The Utimate Tragedy

Imagine if you will three very close friends that are looking for a purpose in their lives. Guts, a poor boy with a very traumatic childhood. Casca, a tomboy whose very much in touch with her inner warrior but not her femininity. Finally, Griffith, the boy with very big dreams of owning his own kingdom. Everything was fine for a time between the three as they had kept each other in check. Casca and Guts keeping an eye on Griffith to make sure he does not make any lapses in judgements. However when Casca and Guts were not looking, Griffith got captured. He was tortured and malnourished. After he was rescued, a little blood fell onto the trinket he had and summoned forth a plethora of demons. Griffith blindly trades his old Band of the Falcons for godhood. What ensues, Guts and Casca will surely never forget.

A gripping story that follows Guts and his girl, Casca. Throughout the story, Guts is rightfully angry and seeks revenge on Griffith for defiling Casca in front of him. Not only is the story good, but the artwork and facial emotion is impressive. It's really a deep and complex atmosphere that the manga has built up. Definitely read it and let the emotional highs and lows flow through you! It surely will leave you waiting for the issue. There's love, loss, mature themes, and so much more that will keep you reading years beyond the serie's run!

The Problem with Godzilla Anime

This big ol' lizard has been stomping around Japan for more than 65 years! He's fought his fair share of enemies from all over the world! But does he translate well onto the animated medium? There it becomes a problem, why does Godzilla not translate well onto anime? To me, it seems as if the big guy takes a back seat to put the spotlight on different characters that mostly do not interact with the big kaiju. The exceptions being mentioning his name or having flashbacks to encounters when he was an antagonist for them.

For the duration of this movie, not much of the big kaiju was shown and was left up to the human counterparts to lay out the setting, motifs, and problem of the story. However, every fan of this big lizard should know that the movies should focus on the monsters and their history. The human connection is not what it's all about, but rather what the monsters themselves represent. Back in 1954 when the monster himself was created, it was for the purpose of having a constant reminder of nuclear warfare brought on by the monster. The monster himself is a constant reminder of the tragedy, why does it need a human connection to an already gruesome and beastly weapon? I do not think that there is anyway you can humanize what lies beyond the human mind. There lies within a beast that does not wish to take pity on his fellow man nor see others as his equal. He must dominate and conquer.

Spy x Family: A Nice Time

A spy on a mission to keep the peace between two countries needs a cover! So, what does he do? He needs to get himself a family! The spy known as Twilight (alias: Loid Forger) goes to a orphanage to get a little kid to fit the family picture. Amongst them is a little girl who can hear the thoughts of everyone around her. Anya is a psychic that really wants to get out of the orphanage and see Loid as an out. Anya also knows about Loid's work through mind reading, which makes her excited when she scans his thoughts and finds out that the mission is for "world peace." She is invested his mission and is soon adopted after she uses her ability to come across as smart. Somewhere in a business firm, Yor Briar is an eccentric, young woman who needs a cover up her assassin profession and what better way than to get married. Lo and behold, Loid Forger crosses paths with Yor which turns out to benefit both of them if they were to "marry" to keep a public reputation. At first, it seems like the relationship is strictly professional but as time goes on, will the relationship blossom into something organic?

What an actual nice series that combines action with slice of life tropes. Anya is a very cute child and her antics complete the dangerous lives of Loid and Yor. It is refreshing to see a series breathe life into a genre such as action and slice of life. The genres have had their fair share of nice picks (such as 7 Samurais and GJ-bu), but this is a marriage of the two in which I do believe that it works nicely in a way which has not been tried before (I could be wrong though). I do think you should watch it too and ignore the hype/criticisms to get a good inference.

Xam'd: Lost Memories

Imagine if you will, a broken and fragile country gets terrorized by a bombings. Akiyuki Takehara is an unlucky victim of a bus bombing that not only leaves him with scars but a beast that now is apart of him called the Xam'd. Confused by what happens, he ends up taking a journey to understand what this organism wants. He joins up with a crew and travels around doing menial labor. But he must understand that if he fails to control the monster within, it will fight against him every step of the way.

An audacious series that explores not only different cultures within the world but the interactions that could occur if something like a war was to arise. The main character along with the characters on the ship have rich and deep backgrounds that they come from. The way that they interact among themselves was not forced at all but natural. The monster that inhabit the humans are also of peculiar interest as they force not only the main character to make unusual decisions but many other in the series. Not to mention the exploitation of these monster to try and win the war was refreshing take on how antagonists should work. He had a logical reasoning for his evil but at the same time he was still one to be despised for his actions. He is a human that is teetering on the edge of being non-human. All in all, it was a very well received series that I liked as it had many elements that melded together naturally. Something some series try to force on the viewer.

There exists a woman who is down on her luck with men and life in general. Minare Koda has a small-time job as an employee at a local shop, which drives her insane. She usually blows off steam by drinking her depression away and ends up talking too much in her drunken stupor. However, when a radio manager happens to be the target of her rantings, he is bound to be recording it for a show. Minare does not like listening to her drunken rambling and demands that he take it off the air. He has another idea, although, as he convinces her to be a late-night radio host who does segments. This pretty much becomes Minare’s second job as she believes she has no way to get out of it.

As far as main characters go, Minare Koda is jut the basic blond woman who has too much going on in her life. Not to mention, the affectionate man who tries to call on her: Chuya. It never ends well for him as Minare is ever indecisive to respond to that man’s feelings which end hurting him more and more. Although, her personality is what keeps the story going in a realistic direction despite being a good character and annoying at the same time. The story elements and character deposition is there but could have been executed in a better manner if it did not feel like the series was rushed. This indecisive woman makes for a good watch as she never lets up with the emotion in her voice.

Hakumei and Mikochi

The world as we know it has been shrunken down to fit the stature of a race of little people and animals. Hakumei and Mikochi are two characters which explore the soothing world around them. Whether it be taking a submarine down to the depths to find an ancient fish or competing in a singing contest with Konjyu, Hakumei and Mikochi live in a relatively peaceful environment while conducting their own business. Hakumei being a brave carpenter does odd jobs with a weasel such as fixing up windmills to become houses or rebuilding a bridge. Mikochi, on the other hand, prefers to live out her days as a tailor, singer, and chef. It is always a relaxing day watching these pair work out their daily problems.

Many of the situations that they run into are quite frankly the most relaxing way to spend your day. Although it may seem trivial, these tiny people are capable of great feats that involve lots of strength. A lot of their episodes are broken up into two episodes within each 23-minute time frame. The development of each character is superb whether it be Konjyu’s one-sided feud with Mikochi or the simple task of building a hot pool to relax in as a homemade spa. It is simply a divine slice of life anime that gives the viewer’s mind a chance to relax as they sit back and enjoy the daily lives of the two main characters. It certainly is a breath of fresh air to see such peaceful environments and graceful characters, even the antagonists in some of the episodes are enjoyable to watch.

Les Miserables: The Story of Cosette

During the late 1800s, there was a time of great division that was apparent between the social elites and poor people of France. A mother and her child are traveling across the land in search of work that could save them. They come across an inn whose owners promised to take care of her daughter while she looks in another town for work. However, it is here that poor Cossette's journey begins. Her caretakers use her as the literal definition of slave. Her mother worked to death becomes sickly as she cannot find a permanent source of income. What becomes of Cosette? There is uncertainty but it is often said: "The Lord shall provide."

This historical drama is a very well-produced series that shows how good the human heart can be. It is certain that Christian undertones can be heard when watching this series as well as the good intention that all humans are capable of. Cosette as well as Jean Valjean (her caretaker) can be thought of as the struggles personified of the French during the late 1800s. Many of the characters are shown to undergo radical development as the story progresses. Characters such as Eponine, Jalvert, and so many others are enhanced in personality as the series goes on. The message is the same throughout the trials that these people face: People are always capable of change. In that same way, it has many Christian tones that are always taught to those who listen. This series in the most basic terms humbly shows Cosette, Jean, Jalvert, and even Eponine have undergone a trial that faces all humans when it is asked of us. In some fashion or form, these people have a change of heart for the better. It is as the characters in the series have said over and over again: “People are capable of change.”

Flip Flappers

A world that is so disoriented even the episodes must be re-watched to understand all that is going on! Flip Flappers follows the adventures of Cocona and Paprika entering worlds known as "Pure Illusion." Each world contains a theme and almost disorienting effect depending on the episode you watch. There seems to be a lack of direct continuity to any of the episodes involved in the series as each episode jumps directly into the next adventure. In each episode, Cocona and paprika are forced to find little crystal shards that are said to contain power to grant a wish. Two organizations are after this power: Cocona/Paprika's organization and Klansmen(?). Whatever the ridiculous cosplay is, this series has deeper tones than the usual animes you see strolling across the TV.

I found that this anime had darker tones than the normal run of the mill magical girl moe junk you see once and a while. If you were to watch the anime, the episodes are clearly not meant to be viewed as happen chronologically or at least not one event after the other. The animation has a lot of psychedelic effect attached to the worlds and act to underline themes that are not present to the naked eye. Such themes include the underlying relationship of Cocona to the girl in the boat in here dreams. The use of the crystal shards is never fully stated as they are only collected and are told to grant wishes when you think of your most precious item. Paprika seems to have a deeper connection to Cocona shown by the way she hangs around Cocona 24/7. Some concerns with the anime are that I wished there were a clearer allusion to the overall plot that is being conveyed by the animation. I get that there is a bit of mystery added into the mix, but the viewer must be engaged with some sort of subtle display that can alert them to an underlying plot ongoing in the background. The relationships could be re-enforced using this such as Salt and Mimi being the parents of Cocona. Not to mention, why did Cocona and Paprika have to be apart in the end in that dimension?!

Den-oh Coil

Imagine that the lines between reality and virtual reality becomes blurred beyond recognition. In a similar theme comparable to Lain, Den-oh Coil's main premise revolves around how technology can become an inseparable vice for mankind. So much in fact that the kids can become absorbed into the "other side" while their real bodies face death. All this troublesome VR stems from glasses that act as an interface to computer generated beings and environments. This is what lies in wait for Yuuko who has just moved to the city with her family. What started out as a normal day turns into a spiraling mystery of finding out what keeps the "Other Side" operating and meeting friends and foes. She tags along (unwillingly) in her Grandma's club to monitor when the "Other Side" and the "Illegals" get out of hand. Yuuko is joined by other children in her grandma's agency and meets up with a foe hell-bent on harvesting "Illegals" for her own benefit. Not to mention, a cute little dog that is destined to protect its master although be it clumsily. However as soon as Yuuko joins the agency, the activity of “Illegals” spikes to levels never seen which affect the computer-generated beings. It all leads up to the mystery of why “Illegals” and the “Other Side” exist in the first place with a mysterious figure know as Miss Michiko at the head of the “Other Side.” The question remains: Do you want to go to the "Other Side" to meet those taken too soon from you?

The series is a well thought out piece with often well placed foreshadowing that casts certain characters into the spotlight. It has its fair share of nice plot points such as the relationships between the sweet moments between Yuuko and Hanaken or Fumie and Daichi. It is also very important to stress how this series is reflective of our world. Especially since humans as a whole do interact with a virtual reality but not as in-depth as shown in Den-oh Coil. I do believe that the series suffers from pacing problem as four episodes in the show becomes slice of life as it focuses on their school lives and other focal points. I felt as if the notion of becoming apart of the "Other Side" could have been more detailed in how it happens. It was shown to have side effects when messing with the "Other Side" such as heart pains and mild dizziness. More dire stakes are needed to convey what is at risk. Furthermore, Isako's character development is rushed toward the end of the series as she goes from antagonist to damsel in distress. Perhaps it was when translating the mamga into an animation. Overall, the series was a decent watch but like any show has its own flaws that makes endearing to the viewer. It was an absolute entertaining experience to watch the show for the first time. I hope you can find that out too if you want to watch it.

Arakawa:Under the Bridge

Kou Ichinomiya is the son of a wealthy businessman who holds a firm belief in his elite status. As such, he is determined to avoid becoming indebted to anyone; but one day, after a run-in with some mischievous kids on Arakawa Bridge, he ends up falling into the river running underneath. Luckily for him, a passerby is there to save him—but now, he owes his life to this stranger!

Angered by this, Kou insists on paying her back, but this may just be the worst deal the arrogant businessman has ever made. The stranger—a stoic, tracksuit-wearing homeless girl known only as Nino—lives in a cardboard box under the bridge and wants only one thing: to fall in love. Asking Kou to be her boyfriend, he has no choice but to accept, forcing him to move out of his comfortable home and start a new life under the bridge!

The anime has very good music and is very surreal comedy anime. It has appealing aesthetics. I would recommend watching.

On an unnamed Earth-like super-continent planet, powerful monsters and villains have been mysteriously appearing and causing disasters. To combat them, the world's government created a Hero Association that employs superheroes to stop the violent creatures and villains. Each of the Hero Association's superheroes are ranked from Class-C to Class-S. Saitama is an unranked hero, hailing from the metropolis of City-Z, who performs heroic deeds for his own entertainment. He has trained himself to the point where he can effortlessly defeat any opponent with a single punch. However, since Saitama became a hero for the fun of the experience, he has lately become bored with his superhuman power, and frustrated at the complete lack of strong opponents that can challenge him. It is confirmed Saitama (the protagonist) could destroy a solar system if he used a super-serious punch at full power.

In this highly modernized world, we have a lot of fattening foods that keep up from looking our best. Now imagine on top of that, there are fantastical creatures that come to our reality to feast on the same foods that fatten us up. Naoe Tomoaki, a professional masseur and diet manager runs into trouble after discovering a plethora of fantastical creatures in the shape of women elves, gorgons, and so on come to him for exercise! It ain't easy being employed by a diet firm but he is gonna try and help these women out on their diets! However, there is a lot that could go wrong, including exploding out of your own clothes from fatness! Yes, somehow Japan managed to make a manga about exercise and dieting lewd. I recommend not to burst out of your clothes the same way they do.

Only problem is that the new school principle wants to implement something new...A reward for any member who murders another and gets away with it walks free! However, if you get caught....It is your execution! The strange thing is that the new school principle is a walking stuffed bear named monokuma and there are 16 students who are going to risk their lives to get the heck out of Dodge and find the culprit behind this massacre. That is, if they survive each other long enough. Have fun finding out who is behind this school nightmare!

A no good loiterer, Kaiji Itou, spends his day gambling, smoking, and drinking the day away. That is until his co-worker tricks him into signing up for the most hellish cruise ship that promises to make all his previous debts away. A hesitant Kaiji decides that this is the chance that will make him rich. Upon getting on the cruise ship, he finds that the games that he is familiar with are none that are used on the ship!

Kaiji will have to cheat, play mental games, and survive if he wants his debt to be gone. However, if he does not, he'll be thrown onto a job that will work away his debt and his soul. Kaiji will discover the worst sides of human personality on this boat, but it is all worth it if you wanna make a buck, right?

If It's for My Daughter, I'd even defeat a Demon Lord.

Imagine you're on your way home from a long adventure and in a forest you meet a poor girl in tattered clothing. Dale does just that when he comes across Latina alone fending for herself. Apparently, she is just a little demon who lost her father and mother. Deciding that this ain't no place for a girl to stay, Dale offers to take her in which she graciously accepts. Now they're attached at the hips! But how will Latina react when Dale has to travel around in order to make ends meet? Will Latina be scared that Dale will leave her or will she mature?

Set in an alternate timeline, where aliens have taken over feudal Japan. As a result, a prohibition on the way of the samurai is established and Japan becomes modernized with the troublesome alien technology.

However one man, Gintoki Sakata, still possesses the heart of the samurai, although from his love of sweets and work as a yorozuya, one might not expect it. Accompanying him in his jack-of-all-trades line of work are Shinpachi Shimura, a pair of glasses with a strong heart, Kagura with her umbrella and seemingly bottomless stomach, as well as Sadaharu, their beast of a dog. Of course, these odd jobs are not always simple, as they frequently have run-ins with the police, ragtag rebels, and assassins, oftentimes leading to humorous but unfortunate consequences.Whatever it takes to make a living, eh? There's no shame in taking on such "minimal" jobs.

This Hero is Powerful, but Overly Cautious.

Ristarte is a novice goddess who is placed in charge of saving the world of Gaelbarde from a Demon King by summoning a human hero. An S-class world, Gaelbarde is extremely dangerous, so Ristarte is careful to select a hero who will be able to prevail against the enemies. She settles on Seiya Ryuguin, whose stats are many times greater than any other contender. Unfortunately, upon summoning him, Ristarte finds to her dismay that he is ridiculously cautious of everything, including her! Refusing to even enter Gaelbarde's safest areas until he has trained to a level that he is comfortable with, Seiya's reticence drives the goddess crazy. However, when the pair finally do set foot on Gaelbarde, events may prove this hero's caution is well justified.

Gon somehow survived the extinction of his fellow dinosaurs and interacts with palaeolithic animals.

Gon's exact saurian species is never delved into. He vaguely resembles an outdated depiction of a generic carnosaur in a tripod stance, only about the size of a small dog. He is an omnivore with an enormous appetite. He possesses enormous power and endurance for his size, his feats of strength including supporting his own weight with his jaws, to being able to partially lift a fully grown African Elephant. His scaly hide is almost impenetrable, being able to shrug off the bites of larger predators.

Gon's intelligence seems to fluctuate in each adventure, ranging from total cluelessness (such as failing to notice a birds nest on his head for weeks), to strategic cunning (using a lion as a beast of burden to capture prey).
