Despite China calling it a "selfish and irresponsible" move, Japan on Thursday started releasing radioactive water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing's '15 Minutes Of Terror' To Involve Critical Manoeuvres. All About The Phases Of Descent

Chandrayaan-3 is expected to make a historic touchdown on the Moon on August 23, 2023, at around 6:04 pm IST, making India the first country to softly land a spacecraft on the lunar south pole. The period before touchdown is critical, and involves complex manoeuvres. The last 15 minutes before Chandrayaan-3's Moon landing are known as the '15 minutes of terror'. The phases of descent are initial preparation, velocity reduction, orientation change, attitude hold phase, fine braking, final descent, and touchdown, a former scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ABP Live. After Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander and Pragyan rover land on the Moon, images captured by the cameras onboard the spacecraft will be shared with Earth. "The crucial moments during the last 15 minutes before touchdown encapsulate intricate manoeuvres, intense calculations, and an unwavering commitment to exploring the Moon's mysteries," said Manish Purohit, a former ISRO scientist who was involved in the Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan projects.  <h3>Chandrayaan-3’s ‘15 minutes of terror’ before lunar touchdown</h3> The initial preparation phase comprises the final 1,139 seconds of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, and it is during this stage that the most critical operations will be performed.  "When the final descent begins, the Vikram lander will be positioned about 750 kilometres from the landing site, will soar 25 to 30 kilometres above the lunar surface, and race at a velocity of about 1,600 metres per second horizontally," said Purohit.  The next phase, which is velocity reduction, will last 690 seconds, and thrusters will be fired to reduce Vikram's velocity to one-fourth of its initial speed, said Purohit. "With this controlled slowdown and the Moon's gravitational pull, the Vikram lander will start descending vertically at around 60 metres per second." The orientation change phase will take place simultaneously with the velocity reduction stage. During the orientation change phase, the lander will be slightly rotated, and a crucial calibration will be conducted 32 kilometres from the landing site, and 7.5 kilometres above the ground, Purohit explained.  The attitude hold phase is a sensitive stage, and will last 10 seconds, said Purohit. "It will check the terrain and confirm the landing spot, avoiding the complications that caused Chandrayaan-2 to crash on the Moon." During the critical fine braking phase, Vikram will be aligned vertically, and will hover at a height of 800 to 1,300 metres above the landing site, said Purohit. "Cameras and sensors will be activated, the computer onboard the spacecraft will process information, and decisions about landing will be finalised." The final descent phase is the one in which the Vikram lander will hover above the lunar surface at a distance of around 150 metres. "The hazard detection camera's 'Go/No-Go' checks will guide the final decision. If all is well, Vikram will commit to the 73-second descent that will mark its historic touchdown," Purohit explained. <h3>The historic touchdown</h3> Once the Vikram lander successfully lands on the lunar south pole, the sensors will signal the computer onboard the spacecraft. After this, the lander will be powered up completely, and Vikram will unfurl the rover ramp so that the Pragyan rover can embark on its lunar journey.  The enhanced communication network, facilitated by the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, the Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module, and ISRO's Deep Space Network Antenna will allow the images captured by cameras onboard Vikram and Pragyan to be shared with Earth, and other data to be transmitted to mission control stations.  "Following successful health checks, ISRO will carry out experiments to study lunar soil and plasma, offering insights on lunar mysteries to the global scientific community. These endeavours pave the way for future lunar exploration and potential human habitation," Purohit concluded. <h3>Chandrayaan-3's lunar landing may be delayed: ISRO scientist</h3> While Chandrayaan-3 is expected to touch down on the lunar surface on August 23, the landing may be delayed by “three to four days” if conditions are unfavourable, a senior scientist at ISRO told ABP Live. If the landing is delayed, the scientist added, Chandrayaan-3 may operate on the Moon for about 10 days, instead of 14 Earth days. This means that if Chandrayaan-3's landing is delayed, the spacecraft may touch down on the lunar south pole on August 26 or 27. He explained that Chandrayaan-3 carries sufficient fuel to allow delays in landing in case conditions are not favourable. "Landing on the designated date is not the priority, safe landing is. What happened to Luna 25? That's the best example. If you have safe manoeuvre and landing, the world will still be yours," said K. Siddhartha, Earth Scientist at ISRO and a strategic thinker. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky addressed a crowd in Denmark on Monday where he told that the promised deliveries of US-made F-16 fighter jets made him confident that Russia will lose. He said that with these jets, Ukraine could end Russia's invasion. Denmark and Netherlands on Sunday announced that they would supply the first F-16s to Ukraine, six jets of this consignment are expected to be delivered by New Year. Washington approved the delivery of jets ahead of the Ukrainian President's trip to Copenhagen, reported news agency Reuters.  Zelesnky while speaking outside the Danish parliament said, "Today we are confident that Russia will lose this war." Danish Defence Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen on Monday said that Ukraine may only use the donated F-16s within the proximity of its own territory. He said, "We donate weapons under the condition that they are used to drive the enemy out of the territory of Ukraine. And no further than that. Those are the conditions, whether it's tanks, fighter planes or something else," reported Reuters. Russia on the other hand had warned earlier that supplying jets to Ukraine would only escalate the war which has already been dragged on for around 18 months now. Russian ambassador Vladimir Barbin in a statement said, "The fact that Denmark has now decided to donate 19 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine leads to an escalation of the conflict. By hiding behind a premise that Ukraine itself must determine the conditions for peace, Denmark seeks with its actions and words to leave Ukraine with no other choice but to continue the military confrontation with Russia." Ukraine's military has said that the jet was crucial to the success of its counteroffensive as it would prevent Russian fighter jets from attacking advancing forces. Ukrainian media quoted Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat as saying, "Superiority in the air is key to success on the ground." Denmark has promised to deliver 19 jets in total. Netherlands has 42 F-16s available but it has yet to decide whether it will donate all of them or not.  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has termed this decision as a 'breakthrough agreement'. A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed Russia’s long-range supersonic bomber in yet another drone strike, reported BBC citing various media reports. BBC added that images on social media showed a Tupolev Tu-22 on fire at Soltsy-2 airbase, south of St Petersburg. While there has been no statement from Ukraine, Russia has acknowledged that a drone was hit by small-arms fire but managed to "damage" a plane.   Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, as quoted by BBC, that Russian air defence downed two attack drones over the region. The two other drones were intercepted over the Bryansk region, north-east of the Ukrainian border, defence officials said, as per BBC.  The Russian Tu-22 bomber can travel at twice the speed of sound and has been used massively by Russia to attack cities in Ukraine, BBC stated in its report.  Meanwhile, after the attack, flights were suspended at Moscow's three biggest airports, according to state media. However, two main international airports at Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo later reopened.  According to BBC, Moscow's defence ministry said that an attack by a "copter-type UAV" took place at around 10:00 Moscow time (08:00 BST) on Saturday, adding that the location is "a military airfield in the Novgorod region", where Soltsy-2 is situated.  "The UAV was detected by the airfield's observation outpost and was hit with small-arms fire...One airplane was damaged; there were no casualties as a result of the terrorist act," the ministry said.  The statement added that a fire which broke out in the airfield parking lot was quickly doused.   The attack is one of many that Kyiv has been pursuing showing its strength of targeting Russian cities, Notably, Soltsy-2, where the present attack took place, is around 400 miles (650km) from the Ukraine border.  However, the Russian defence ministry described the drone as a "copter-type UAV" suggesting a cheap, commercially available device launched at short range.    <h3>Tupolev Tu-22 Bomber </h3> According to BBC, the Tu-22 is a Cold War-era, swing-wing supersonic bomber which was codenamed "Backfire" by Nato.  Its modern versions like the Tu-22M3 can reach speeds of Mach 2 (2,300km/h or 1,430mp/h) and can carry up to 24,000kg of weapons, including "dumb bombs" and homing missiles, BBC added. It stated that these have been used during conflicts in Syria, Chechnya, and Georgia and most recently in Ukraine.  According to prosecutors in Kyiv, stated BBC, at least 30 people were killed when a missile launched by Tu-22 hit a block of flats in Dnipro in January. "We have a positive intent and an open mind when it comes to BRICS expansion," he said, as quoted by PTI. When asked about of PM Modi will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Kwatra said that the schedule of the prime minister's bilateral meetings is being finalised.  He also informed that the modalities for the inclusion of new members into the grouping are being discussed among the Sherpas. "I would not want to prejudge the outcome of the discussions," he added, as per PTI. According to the Foreign Secretary, 23 countries have submitted their applications to join the BRICS, and Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Argentina have emerged as major contenders for the membership. Following the BRICS Summit, PM Modi's visit to Athens assumed significance as it will be the first prime ministerial visit from India after then PM Indira Gandhi visited Greece in September 1983. Then Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou visited India thrice — in November 1984 for Indira Gandhi's funeral, in January 1985 to attend a summit on nuclear disarmament, and in January 1986 on a bilateral state visit as the chief guest for the Republic Day function. North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test launch of strategic cruise missiles as South Korea and the United States began annual military drills, reported Reuters citing North Korea’s state media KCNA. It added that the missile test comes as Pyongyang sees the annual drills as a rehearsal for war. According to the KCNA, Kim visited a navy fleet stationed on the east coast to oversee the test aboard a warship, the report added. However, there is no clarification as to when the development took place.   KCNA said that the launch was aimed at verifying the "combat function of the ship and the feature of its missile system," while improving the sailors' capability to carry out an "attack mission in actual war". It said that the ship's missile hit its target.  The state media reported that Kim said maintaining the ship for "high mobility and mighty striking power and constant preparedness for combat to cope with sudden situations," a Reuters report said.  Aboard the ship, he vowed to reinforce the navy with "improved combat efficiency and full modern means of surface and underwater offensive and defensive" capabilities, KCNA said.  "We would put spurs to the modernisation of naval weapons and equipment, including the building of powerful warships and the development of shipboard and underwater weapon systems," he was quoted by KCNA as saying, reported Reuters.   <h3>South Korea Reacts To Development </h3> Meanwhile, reacting to the launch, South Koran defence ministry termed Kim’s claims as "exaggerated" and "different from the facts".  The launch comes at a time when South Korea and the United States kicked off the Ulchi Freedom Shield summer exercises on Monday. The drill is aimed to enhance their joint responses to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.   On the other hand, Pyongyang has denounced the US-South Korea military drills as a rehearsal for nuclear war.   On the military drill, South Korea said this year's exercises will be held on the "largest-scale ever". It said that tens of thousands of troops from both sides, as well as some member states of the UN Command will be mobilised.  According to Reuters, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said the drills would be conducted under several contingency scenarios. As per Reuters, Brolund said that conditions have improved.  "Things are looking better. We are finally feeling like we are moving forward rather than moving backwards, and that's a great feeling," Brolund told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, quoted Reuters.  It is important to note that forest fires are not uncommon in Canada, but the intensity of the same has been only increasing recently, for which experts blame climate change.  Several fires, reported Reuters, fuelled by severe drought, have been reported closer to the US border and in the US Pacific Northwest.  In Washington state, firefighters battled two major blazes, the Gray Fire and the Oregon Road Fire, which together destroyed over 20,000 acres of forest and more than 100 structures. Reuters added that government officials in Canada have urged residents in evacuation order zones to leave immediately to save their lives.  So far, the report added, there has been no official confirmation on any estimates of the total number of buildings destroyed.   According to Reuters, since 2009, Canada has been spending more on fighting and containing wildfires than on maintaining its firefighting personnel and program.
