In order to make the car completely FIA compliant, Lotus added a full roll cage, a fire extinguisher system, and a six-point restraint harness. Thanks to stripping virtually everything else from the interior and using a number of carbon fiber body panels, the Type 124 weighs 440 pounds less than the stock car (approximately 2640 pounds).

The engine hasn't changed -- it's still a Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter V-6 -- but its power has. Lotus says in Type 124, the six-cylinder can produce as much as 400 hp. Lotus replaced the standard six-speed sequential gearbox with a normal six-speed manual transmission.

The Evora Type 124 will make its debut at the 2010 ADAC Nrburgring 24 Hours in May, and will continue competing at a number of various endurance races through 2011 as part of a factory supported program.

"It's old enough to be vintage, but it's not so antique that it's a relic."

Although pickups came of age after World War II, they continued to evoke a postwar sensibility until Chevy introduced a groundbreaking generation of trucks in 1960. Not only were these C/K pickups - a designation that is still in unofficial use - equipped with the segment's first independent front suspension, but a new drop-center X-shaped frame reduced the height of the vehicle by up to seven inches. The lower stance was emphasized by an attractive, pinched-waist body marred only by a fussy front end featuring "jet pod" eyebrows over the grille. Over time, the hoodline was lowered and the front fascia simplified, and by the end of the model run in 1966, the pickup was an exemplar of restrained elegance.

Chevy dominated the pickup market during this era, setting all-time sales records in 1964, 1965, and 1966. Central to the truck's success was a seemingly endless array of options available to buyers. In 1958, Chevy offered 136 distinct models. By 1962, it was up to no fewer than 203 - two-wheel-drive C models, four-wheel-drive Ks, Stepsides, Fleetsides, Custom Cabs, Corvair-based trucks, Suburbans, half tons, three-quarter tons, one tons, long beds, short beds, and scads of drivetrain combos. Ten days after his twenty-fifth birthday, Rosemeyer was invited to a tryout session for new recruits held at the Nürburgring. Although he lacked any four-wheel racing experience, Rosemeyer had gained the attention of Auto Union team manager Willy Walb because of his eight motorcycle victories, two of which were earned aboard a 500-cc DKW, one of the four brands in the Auto Union combine.

Dressed for the occasion in a suit and tie, Rosemeyer demonstrated a natural affinity for the loose-tailed Auto Union racing car. He was the second fastest of twelve candidates on the Nürburgring's 4.8-mile Südschleife (southern loop) and the third quickest of the top five prospects on the daunting 14.2-mile Nordschleife. Impressed by the total novice's performance, Walb signed Rosemeyer to the team as a cadet driver.

In only his second race - also at the 'Ring - Rosemeyer proved the wisdom of Walb's decision by leading two of the eleven laps of the 1935 Eifel Grand Prix in adverse conditions. Part of the course was wet, Rosemeyer's windshield and goggles were damaged, and his V-16 engine had a severe misfire. Nonetheless, the cadet finished only 1.9 seconds behind grand master Rudolf Caracciola's Mercedes-Benz. To admonish the upstart, Caracciola presented Rosemeyer with a swizzle stick and suggested that he make better use of his head in the future. Payback was swift in coming. In 1936, the fiery Rosemeyer won two GPs held at the Nürburgring; the smug Caracciola was sidelined by mechanical problems on both occasions.

2010 Infiniti EX35 Adds Content, Not Cost

Infiniti's added a few extra goodies to its EX35 for 2010, but you wouldn't notice by the price tag alone -- the automaker hasn't raised pricing over 2009 models.

The 2010 EX35 receives heated mirrors, automatic headlamps, and iPod/USB audio connections as standard equipment on all models. Journey models also receive heated

seats and a Bluetooth hands-free system at no extra charge. Opting for the navigation system -- which now includes weather and restaurant information broadcast over XM satellite radio -- also includes a new Bluetooth streaming audio function.

As was the case last year, a base 2010 EX35 stickers at $34,665 (including an $865 destination charge), while all-wheel-drive bumps that figure to $36,065. Journey models begin at $36,865 in rear-wheel-drive form, and $38,265 if equipped with all-wheel-drive.

Ten Percent of Nissan's Sales May Be Electric Vehicles

If you doubted Nissan was serious about offering pure electric vehicles to the world, heed the words of Brian Carolin, senior vice president for Nissan's sales and marketing in North America.

"By the middle of the next decade," Carolin told Automotive News, "ten percent of our volume will be EV."

This goal will largely be attainable thanks to the like of the 2011 Leaf, a five-door EV unveiled earlier this year. The Leaf will offer a 100 mile range on a full charge, yet quick chargers (still under development) may allow an 80-percent recharge within 30 minutes. Nissan plans to manufacture the Leaf in its Smyrna, Tennesse, facility by 2012, and given the flexibility of its platform (although unique, it is quite similar to Nissan's B- and C-segment architectures), it's likely we may see EV variants of Nissan's compact car offerings in the future.

On that end, Nissan's Versa and Sentra are scheduled for a complete overhaul in 2012, as is the Pathfinder SUV. The latter will likely move to the larger Nissan Patrol platform in an attempt to reduce the use of the F-Alpha platform. On that note, the Armada SUV is likely to die after next year, while the future of the Titan is in question following a failed joint venture with Chrysler.

Nissan originally hoped a Chrysler-built Titan could hit the market by 2011, the same year a replacement for the Quest minivan (possibly built off the Japanese-market ElGrand) arrives within showrooms.
