Definition: Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products.

1. Background of the Khilafat Movement :
- After 1st World War (1914–1918), the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) was defeated by Britain and its allies. When the First World War ended, there were rumours that a harsh peace treaty was going to be imposed on the Ottoman Empire
- There was a fear that the power of the spiritual head of the Islamic world Khalifa, would be curtailed.
- The Sultan of Turkey was also regarded as the Khalifa (Caliph) — the spiritual leader of all Muslims Ummah

- When the British and their allies planned to remove the Sultan and divide his empire, Indian Muslims felt deeply hurt, as it affected their religious leader.

Democracy is not something readymade and finished. It grows, evolves and passes through stages of failures and unsuccessful. Anti-democratic and undemocratic forces are never absent from any human society. Man is not a perfectly rational animal. Reason and unreason are in constant conflict.

All writers on the subject of democracy have dwelt on the difficulty against which the aims and ideals of democracy have to contest. Socrates and Jesus Christ were victims of a mob-minded majority. In India such monstrous and atrocious customs as the Sati system, untouchability, the caste system, enjoyed popular support for centuries.

Rule by a brute majority is not democracy. Sidekick speaks of a democratic minimum, namely those irreducible and inviolable natural rights which majority rule cannot touch. Democracy is an all-embracing comprehensive system, very carefully and understandingly built-up and modified or liberalised from time to time.

England was a democracy pretty old in the 19th century, and yet Macaulay failed to get a Bill passed against child-labour which he wished to be limited to ten hours a day. Monstrous and cruel practices even in England, the mother of Parliaments, were legally permitted for decades and centuries. None is free from a position to resist temptation. Hegel says, “Wars are the outcome of latent vardom”. The world is passing through a period of imminent explosion. Every nation lives under the fear of danger and insecurity. The abiding values of life have been allowed to die or sanity have been given the go-by.

Home-life, the basis of civilization, is breaking up. Inspiring literature and art have been replaced by the literature and art of cynicism and denial. The generation is a hungry generation and therefore an angry generation with a black future. The healthy restraints of life, the necessary checks and balances of life have all gone.

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on one occasion significantly remarked that England made a success of democracy because the Industrial Revolution in England preceded full democracy by almost a century or more. We in India started the democratic experiment without an Industrial Revolution.

What did he mean to say? The British Industrial Revolution brought prosperity and economic security to 70 per cent of the common population of Britain which helped to make British democracy progressively a success.

Our Indian democracy has remained bankrupt and poverty-stricken with about ninety per cent of people living under the subsistence-level. Not only people living under the subsistence-level but bureaucracy, the peasantry and the labour class but our bureaucrats and the middle classes, too, remain deprived. Such a economic security and economic democracy state of affairs is inimical to the success of democracy in India. When is said and done the economic forces are the decisive forces.

Should we despair of the success of democracy in India? There are signs of hope that India is becoming change-conscious and change-impelled. Land to the landless, work to the workless, houses to the houseless, family planning, spread of letters in Indian population, general discontent and unrest cannot go all waste. Weak forces and great movements are at work all over the globe. It is, therefore, not unreasonable, almost certain, to believe that before the 20th century is over,

will have turned the corner. Sidney Webb once said about India, “gradualness. Rome was not built in a day.” We are still in a democratic India a new Indian democratic experiment of rare importance and significance, the pathetic contentment of which Montaigne, the Secretary of State of India cherished. In the second decade of the second half of the century, India has changed and India is changing.

Our people are no longer fatalistic, contented, happy and discontented; they have begun to feel and to think. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru had acknowledged the impressive greatness of Indian civilization of culture but, at the same time, had pointed out the weakness of Hindu polity. This weakness was the omission of a sense of human equality in the Hindu social structure.

What is the quality, then, or the characteristic, which we can call modern in modern civilization? The birth and growth of science and technology and the increasing use of power-driven machinery is the most obvious answer. To this may be added the establishment of democracy which is resulting in the increasing importance and the value of the individual.

Edward Carpenter, in the concluding chapters of his world famous book, Civilization: Its Cause and Cure, raises the question why old civilizations die and whether we should fear a similar death for modern civilization. His answer is no. His argument is that the death of ancient civilizations was due to the fact that they were local and limited in their domain, while modern civilization is rapidly becoming a global civilization.

Every civilization has behind it a mental world. We have to rediscover the mind of ancient India, which gave us the Indian civilization. If we try to guess at this secret dimension of Indian civilization we shall discover that the Indian mind had a world awareness and a world feeling and a secret language, which has enabled India to survive through its trials and tribulations. One vital and life-infusing quality of this awareness and feeling was a non-creedal, spiritual, refined and cultured materialism with a universal human appeal.

This goes to explain that vitality of Indian civilization which is embedded in the blood and bone and woven into the texture of every Indian, the inalienable sense of oneness with nature, with the animal kingdom and with all human beings, which is the richest gift of the Indian civilization and culture. This also explains the appeal of home life, domestic relations, social relations, human relations, the poetry of childhood, the god-headness of womanhood and the god-like concept of manhood, which characterize the best Hindu thought. The doctrine of truth and Ahimsa are not based on muddled sentiment but on objective beyond objectivity.

But a civilization, though it ought to have a soul, still has to do everything to keep alive that soul in all its freshness, has to adjust and maintain an external social structure in the context of world history.

One of the opening passages in Manu Smriti unmistakably declares that the laws of its code must be changed from time to time reflecting changes in life and society. This adaptability has been one of the secrets of the survival of Hindu civilization which today is an amalgam of civilizations, Aryan, Dravidian, Muslim, and European. To pick up again the thread of our reflections — the thought background of Hindu civilization reached its highest point in the Upanishadic age.

In one of his most illuminating passages, Tagore calls the message of this age the message of the forest. The Upanishads are rightly called the ‘Aranyakas’, which means ‘of the forests’. This message lost or nearly lost its dynamism for Indians long centuries ago.

After the Upanishadic Age the movement of Indian history was in reverse gear. It was really not progression but retrogression. We began to lapse back into a shell of sham and worthless primitiveness. India began to shrink and wither away though it had still immense reserves of strength and richness. Marx, writing in 1854, called the Britishers in India, ‘unconscious tools of history’. In other words, the Britishers, all unknown to themselves, challenged India to become true India, to realize the promise, the possibilities and the potentialities of Upanishadic thought.

But the history of the West has itself fallen short of its own promises. Modern European civilization in the midst of healthy dynamism for an unhealth restlessness, born of the pseudoreligion of the blind forces of capitalism, colonialism and imperialism. Unplanned expansion and overloaded industrialism have resulted in making the machine, the master of man, who has become a slave of the machine instead of being its master and controller. The forces have reversed, with every revolt that modern Western civilization has begun to suffer from high blood pressure. A century ago Ruskin and Tolstoy warned against such a state of affairs. Tolstoy and Gandhi spoke in the same voice. Modern civilization was born out of the womb of ancient civilization, but it seems to have failed itself because it could not control and harness its own chain reactions which have turned modern civilization into a Frankenstein.

Our ancient civilization sorely needs the rejuvenating discipline of the mind created by modern civilization. But it also needs, while it becomes modern-minded, to recapture its ancient-souled vision of life.

Indian thought and Indian civilization emphasize not so much the particularism of things, as their universalism. Diversity is only a mode of unity. Modern civilization today faces the menace of its own modernity. Let the West give us the mind and the discipline of the modern civilization and let India in turn give to the West the ancient-souled vision and wisdom of its thought. This two-ways traffic between ancient and modern civilizations alone can restore the equipoise, the balance and the equilibrium of the world, which is being shaken to its roots by the blind forces of soulless modernity. How To Make India A Superpower

“India is not just a piece of earth; she is a power, a godhead.” This is how Sri Aurobindo looked at this country and its rich ancient civilisation. And he wanted his fellow Indians to have “the firm faith that India must rise and be great.”

A country like India, with more than one billion people, should aim for the status of a superpower. If nothing else, we account for nearly a sixth of humanity. Apart from population, there are other factors that favour India. For example we are a full-fledged democracy. What’s more, we have been a vibrant, modern democracy for 56 years now which is not the case with any other developing country in the history of modern world.

Besides these two vital factors, the development model adopted by our first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave us two magnificent gifts. One is the vast industrial and technological base which enabled us not merely to build big industries in the public sector but also to go for the Antarctica expedition and atomic energy capabilities. The second is that we are the largest pool of skilled technical personnel after the USA because of which we have prospering Indian professionals working in foreign countries.

In the 21st century, the status of a nation does not depend so much on military strength as on economic strength or standard of living of people. If military strength or nuclear weapons were to determine the status of a nation, Russia would be equal to the USA in the world today. The USA has been able to overtake its principal rival Russia because of its economic strength and because of the purchasing power that Americans possess.

India today does not have serious problems of external security because the country has indigenously developed both nuclear weapons and effective delivery systems. But the weakness of our country lies in its sluggish growth rates and in miserable human development indicators. So, if India is to gain a rightful place in the comity of advanced nations, we need to focus on accelerating our growth and development.

While we need to concentrate on growth rates, we must simultaneously attend to much basic tasks as widening mass literacy and improving public health systems. Along with advances in technology and industry, utmost care must be given to the promotion of education and to the development of people’s intellectual skills, personality and social training.

Indians have all chances to take the country to the status of a super power. To achieve this golden goal, we have no option but to work hard with great faith in our strength and in the long-term future of our nation. No amount of planning can achieve these goals in flexible national attitudes and harmony. Growth, justice and harmony are the firm pillars on which India can be built as a superpower.

A letter to god introduction

Written by G.L. Fuentes, this story, "Letter to God" revolves around the idea of having blind faith in God. The story is set in a Latin American country. The protagonist of the story is Lencho, a mountain farmer who writes letters to God for help after his entire crop is destroyed by a devastating hailstorm. His wishes are partially fulfilled, but not completely. In the end, he is grateful but questions the honesty and humility of the postmasters who actually gave him money (anonymously) in the name of God and helped him.

The theme of the Lesson

This text shows three points. It shows Lencho's strong faith in God. His faith is strengthened by the fact that the people who help him are people. Secondly, it shows the utter innocence of Lencho, the farmer. Thirdly, the text shows that sometimes, charity can go unnoticed. You may not get any recognition for your kindness and charity. On the other hand, people may mistake you for a "bunch of scoundrels".

Lencho is a farmer who writes a letter to God when his crop is destroyed, asking for a hundred pesos from God. What does his letter reach to God? What does God send him a hundred pesos? बड़ी बूँदें दस पैसे की हैं और छोटी पाँच पैसे की।”

हिन्दी अनुवाद — संतुष्ट भाव के साथ उसने (लेनछो ने) फूलों से भरे पके हुए मक्के के खेत को देखा, जो बारिश की चादर से ढका हुआ था। लेकिन अचानक तेज़ हवा चलने लगी और बारिश के साथ बहुत बड़े ओले गिरने लगे। ये वास्तव में चांदी के नए सिक्कों जैसे लग रहे थे। लड़के अपने शरीर को बारिश के हवाले कर इन जमी हुई मोतियों को इकट्ठा करने के लिए बाहर भागे।

हिन्दी अनुवाद — जब आदमी ने कहा “अब अंधेरा बहुत तेज़ी से बढ़ रहा है।", “मैं उम्मीद करता हूँ कि यह जल्दी रुक जाए।”

एक घंटे तक ओलों की बारिश बगीचे, खेत, पहाड़ी और पूरी घाटी पर होती रही। खेत सफेद चादर जैसे ढक गए थे।

पेड़ों पर कोई पत्ता नहीं बचा था। फूल गायब हो गए थे। मक्के के पौधों को पूरी तरह से नष्ट कर दिया गया था।

लेनछो बहुत ज़्यादा दुखी हुआ। जब तूफान गुज़र गया, वह अपने खेत के बीच में खड़ा हुआ और अपने बेटों से बोला —

“टिड्डियों की विपत्ति भी इससे बेहतर होती। ओलों ने तो कुछ भी नहीं छोड़ा।

इस साल हमारे पास खाने को मक्का नहीं होगा।”

उस रात बहुत ही दुखदायी थी।

“हमारा सारा काम बेकार हो गया।”

“कोई नहीं है जो हमारी मदद कर सके।”

“इस साल हम सबको भूखा रहना पड़ेगा।”

हिन्दी अनुवाद — लेकिन उस एकांत घाटी के बीच स्थित एकमात्र घर में रहने वाले सभी लोगों के दिलों में एक ही उम्मीद थी — ईश्वर की मदद।

Fuentes describes Lencho as a man who has complete faith in God. He is a hardworking farmer who lives away from the crowd in a lonely house in the valley. A hailstorm destroys his corn field.

He writes a letter to God demanding a hundred pesos. He is not a greedy man. He demands as much money as he needs. He is not selfish. He worries about his family. He is not stupid. Postoffice employees laugh to see his letter to God.

However, he is not a comic character. It is his firm faith in God which inspires him to write the letter to God. He has unquestioning faith. The post master sends money to him on behalf of God. But Lencho calls the post office employees ‘a bunch of crooks’.

It does not mean that Lencho is ungrateful. He does not know that post office employees have helped him. To sum up, Lencho is an honest man. He is hardworking and a firm believer in God. He has so much faith in God that he wrote a letter to God.

Everyone thought Horace Danby was a good and honest man. He was around fifty years old, unmarried, and lived with a housekeeper who always worried about his health. He was usually happy and healthy, except during summers when he got hay fever.

Horace made locks and was quite successful in his business. He even had two helpers. But there was a secret—Horace was not completely honest. Fifteen years ago, he went to jail for the first time. He loved rare and expensive books. To buy them, he stole money once every year. He planned his robberies carefully, stole enough to last him a year, and then bought the books secretly through an agent.

One sunny July afternoon, Horace was ready for this year’s robbery. For two weeks, he had been watching a house called Shotover Grange. He studied its rooms, electric wiring, paths, and garden. He knew the family was in London, and the two servants had gone to watch a movie. Horace felt happy as he saw them leave, though he had a small tickle in his nose because of hay fever.

He came out from behind the garden wall, carrying a bag of tools on his back. Inside the Grange, there were jewels worth fifteen thousand pounds in the safe. Horace planned to sell the jewels one by one and earn at least five thousand pounds.

Horace was excited about the robbery. The jewels would give him enough money to live happily for another year and buy three rare books he wanted, which would be sold in autumn. He had seen the housekeeper hang the kitchen door key on a hook outside. Wearing gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints, he took the key and opened the door. A small dog was lying in the kitchen. It made a noise and wagged its tail in a friendly way.

“Good boy, Sherry,” Horace said as he passed by. He knew that calling dogs by their name and being kind kept them quiet. The safe was in the drawing room, hidden behind a not-so-good painting. Horace thought for a moment about collecting paintings instead of books, but books were better because they needed less space.

There was a big bowl of flowers on the table, and the smell made Horace sneeze. He put down his bag and arranged his tools. He had four hours before the servants came back. The safe wasn’t hard for Horace to open since he was an expert with locks. The burglar alarm was weak, so he went to the hall to cut its wire. When he returned, the flowers made him sneeze loudly again.

Horace thought people were careless with their valuable things. A magazine had written about this house, even showing a picture of the drawing room and mentioning that the safe was hidden behind the painting. But the flowers were troubling Horace. He buried his face in his handkerchief when suddenly, a voice spoke from the doorway. “What is it? A cold or hay fever?” Without thinking, Horace replied, “Hay fever,” and sneezed again. The voice continued, “You should see a doctor. There are treatments for hay fever if you find out which plant is causing it. I heard you sneezing from upstairs.”

The voice was calm and kind, but it also sounded firm. A woman stood in the doorway, and Sherry, the dog, was rubbing against her. She was young, quite pretty, and wore a red dress. She walked to the fireplace and adjusted the ornaments there.

“Down, Sherry,” she said. “Anyone would think I’ve been away for a month!” She smiled at Horace and said, “But I came back just in time, though I didn’t expect to meet a burglar.” Horace felt a little hopeful because she seemed amused to see him. He thought he might avoid trouble if he spoke to her carefully.“I didn’t expect to meet one of the family,” he said.

She nodded and replied, “I can see it’s quite inconvenient for you to meet me. So, what are you going to do now?”

Horace said, “At first, I thought of running away.”

“Of course, you could do that,” she said, “but I would call the police and tell them all about you. They’d catch you very quickly.”

Horace smiled and said, “I would cut the telephone wires first. Then…” He stopped and smiled again. “I’d make sure you couldn’t do anything for a few hours.”

She looked serious and asked, “Would you hurt me?”

Horace paused before saying, “I think I only wanted to scare you by saying that.”

“You didn’t scare me,” she replied calmly.

Horace tried to convince her. “It would be better if you just forgot about seeing me and let me go.”

Her voice suddenly became sharp. “Why should I? You were going to rob me. If I let you go, you’ll just rob someone else. People like you are dangerous for society.”

Horace smiled. “I don’t hurt society. I only steal from rich people who have plenty of money. I do it for a good reason, and I hate the idea of going to prison.”

She laughed. Horace thought he was convincing her, so he begged, “Look, I know I don’t have the right to ask, but I’m desperate. Please let me go, and I promise I’ll never do this again. I really mean it.”

She stayed silent for a moment, watching him closely. Then she said, “You’re really afraid of prison, aren’t you?”

She came closer, shaking her head. “I always seem to like the wrong kind of people.”

She picked up a silver box from the table and took out a cigarette. Hoping to please her, Horace quickly took off his gloves and gave her his cigarette lighter.

“You’ll let me go?” he asked, holding the lighter towards her.

“Yes,” she said, “but only if you do something for me.”

“Anything you say,” Horace replied eagerly.

“Before we left for London, I promised my husband I’d take my jewels to the bank, but I left them in the safe. I need them tonight for a party, so I came back to get them. But…”

Horace smiled and said, “You’ve forgotten the safe’s combination, haven’t you?”

“Yes,” the young lady admitted.

“Don’t worry,” Horace said. “I’ll open it for you. You’ll have your jewels in an hour. But I’ll have to break the safe.”

“That’s fine,” she said. “My husband won’t be back for a month, and I’ll have the safe repaired before then.”

In just an hour, Horace opened the safe, gave the young lady the jewels, and left happily.

For two days, he kept his promise to her. But on the third day, he started thinking about the books he wanted. He realized he would need to find another safe to rob.

However, he never got the chance to start. By noon, a policeman arrested him for the jewel robbery at Shotover Grange.

Horace had made a big mistake. He had taken off his gloves while opening the safe, so his fingerprints were all over the room. When he told the police that the owner’s wife had asked him to open the safe, no one believed him. The real owner’s wife, a sharp-tongued, grey-haired woman of sixty, said his story was complete nonsense.

Now, Horace works as an assistant librarian in the prison. He often thinks about the clever, charming young lady who tricked him. She was a thief too, just like him. Horace gets very angry whenever someone talks about "honour among thieves."

“It’s not my balcony,” Ausable said. “It belongs to the next apartment. This room was once part of a bigger flat, and the balcony extends under my window. Someone used it last month to break in. The hotel promised to block it off, but they haven’t.”

Max gestured with the gun, telling Fowler to sit down. “We’ll wait for the report,” he said. “It should arrive in thirty minutes.” “Thirty-one,” Ausable corrected him. “The appointment is at 12:30. I wonder how you learned about the report, Max.” Max smiled. “We also wonder how your people got the report. But no matter. I’ll take it tonight. What’s that?”

There was a sudden knock at the door. Fowler jumped in surprise, but Ausable stayed calm. “That must be the police,” Ausable said. “I asked them to check on me because this report is so important.” Max looked worried. The knocking grew louder, and a voice called, “Mr. Ausable! Mr. Ausable!” Max panicked. He backed toward the window. “Send them away, or I’ll hide on the balcony and shoot if needed!” he said, climbing out of the window. But there was no balcony! Max fell to the ground below.

Gradually a strong desire began to grow inside Valli. She wanted to get on that bus, even if it was just once. Day by day her desire grew stronger. Suddenly, Valli clapped her hands in excitement. A small cow was running in the middle of the road with its tail in the air, right in front of the bus.

The bus slowed down and the driver blew the horn loudly again and again. But the more the driver blew the horn, the more scared the cow became and ran faster, right in front of the bus. Valli found it very funny to watch the cow chasing the bus. She laughed until tears welled up in her eyes. “Hey, lady, didn’t you laugh too much?” the conductor called out. “Better save some for tomorrow.”

Finally, the cow moved off the road and the bus came to a railroad crossing. Valli saw a small train in the distance, growing larger as it approached. The train passed the bus with a loud roar, causing the bus to shake. After that, the bus passed a busy shopping street, with big, bright shops and lots of people. Valli was amazed and watched everything in wonder. Soon, the bus stopped and everyone got off except Valli.

“Hey, lady,” the conductor said, “are you not getting off? The conductor nodded, and she felt very sad. What had been a lovable, beautiful creature just a little while ago had now suddenly lost its charm and its life. It looked so horrible, so frightening as it lay there, legs spreadeagled, a fixed stare in its lifeless eyes, blood all over...

The bus moved on. The memory of the dead cow haunted her, making her feel less excited. She no longer wanted to look out of the window.

She sat like that, stuck to her seat, until the bus reached her village at three forty. She stood up and stretched herself. Then she turned to the conductor and said, “Well, sir, I hope to see you again.”

“Okay, madam,” he answered, smiling. “Whenever you feel like a bus ride, come and join us. And don’t forget to bring your fare.”

She laughed and jumped down from the bus. Then she ran straight home.

When she entered her house, she saw her mother awake and talking to one of Valli’s aunts, the one from South Street. This aunt was a real chatterbox, never stopping once she started talking.

“And where have you been?” her aunt asked when Valli came in. She spoke very casually, not really expecting an answer. So Valli just smiled, and her mother and aunt continued their conversation.

“Yes, you’re right,” her mother said. “There are so many things around us and in the world outside. How can we know everything? And even when we do know something, we often can’t understand it completely, can we?”

“Oh, yes!” breathed Valli.

“What?” asked her mother. “What did you say?”

“Oh,” said Valli, “I just agree with what you said about things happening without our knowledge.”

“Just a chit of a girl, she is,” said her aunt, “and yet look how she pokes her nose into our conversation, just as though she were a grown lady.”

Valli smiled to herself. She didn’t want them to understand her smile. But then, there wasn’t much chance of that, was there?

In early 1956, I travelled to southern Iraq. By then, I had started thinking that I would like to keep an otter instead of a dog and that Camusfearna, surrounded by water just a short distance from my home, would be a perfect place to try this idea.

When I mentioned this casually to a friend, he replied just as casually that I should get one from the marshes of the Tigris River. He said that otters were as common there as mosquitoes and that the Arabs often tamed them. We were heading to Basra to visit the Consulate-General to collect and respond to our mail from Europe. At the Consulate-General, we found that my friend’s mail had arrived, but mine hadn’t.

I sent a telegram to England, but after three days, nothing happened. I then tried to call. The call had to be booked 24 hours in advance. On the first day, the phone line wasn’t working; on the second, the exchange was closed for a religious holiday. On the third day, there was another problem with the line. My friend left, and we decided to meet a week later. Five days later, my mail finally arrived. I took it to my room to read, and there, sitting on the floor, were two Arabs. Beside them was a sack that wiggled now and then. They handed me a note from my friend: “Here is your otter...”

When that sack was opened, a new phase of my life began—one that hasn’t ended yet and, as far as I can tell, might stay with me forever. It became almost like a spell or obsession with otters, one that I later discovered is shared by most people who have ever had one as a pet. The creature that came out of the sack onto the wide, tiled floor of the Consulate bedroom looked a lot like a tiny, dragon from medieval times. From its head to the tip of its tail, it had a unique appearance that was both fascinating and unusual.

Mijbil the otter was covered in a thick layer of mud that made him look like he was wearing strong, pointy scales like armour. Between these muddy points, I could see his soft, velvet fur, as brown as chocolate. When he shook himself, I thought a cloud of dust might fly off! But it took me a whole month to clean off all the mud and finally see his true, beautiful fur. I named him Mijbil, and later, scientists discovered that he was a type of otter never seen before. They named his kind **Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli**, or simply **Maxwell's otter**.

At first, for about a day, Mijbil wasn’t friendly but wasn’t mean either. He seemed uninterested in me and slept far away on the floor. But on the second night, he came up on my bed and curled up near my knees, staying there until morning tea arrived. That day, Mijbil started getting really curious about everything around him. I made a small body belt for him so I could lead him, and I took him to the bathroom. The moment he saw water, he went wild with happiness! He splashed, rolled, dived, and shot up and down the bathtub, making so much noise and water everywhere that it seemed like a hippo was there instead of a small otter!

I soon learned that all otters love water—they can’t resist playing with it! If there’s a bowl of water, they’ll tip it over, or, if they can’t, they’ll sit in it and splash until it spills. For an otter, water must always be moving or making waves; if it’s still, it’s simply too boring for them!

The days in Basra were nice, but I was scared about taking Mij to England and Camusfearna. The British airline to London didn’t allow animals, so I booked a flight to Paris with another airline and then to London. They told me that Mij had to be in a box that was no bigger than eighteen inches square. I got a box made for him. An hour before we left, I put Mij in the box to help him get used to it and went for a quick meal.

When I came back, I saw a terrible thing. The box was quiet, but dried blood was around the air holes and lid. I quickly unlocked the box and opened it. Mij looked very tired and was covered in blood. He had torn the inside of the box. I removed the sharp pieces, but there were only ten minutes left until our flight and the airport was five miles away. I put poor Mij back in the box and held the lid down.

In the car, I sat with the box next to me while the driver drove very fast through the streets of Basra. The plane was waiting for us, and the officials hurried me to it. Luckily, my seat was at the front. I spread newspapers on the floor around my feet, called the air hostess, and gave her some fish for Mij to keep cool. I told her about what happened in the last half hour. I really liked that air hostess; she was very kind. She even said I could hold Mij on my lap, and I felt so thankful to her. But I didn’t know what would happen next with Mij!

Maxwell saw Mij’s tail disappearing under the legs of a fat man in a white turban. Maxwell tried to catch him, but instead, he got curry all over his face! The air hostess, smiling kindly, said, “It would be better if you sit down. I will find the animal and bring it to you.” Maxwell sat back in his seat. He tried to watch where Mij went, but suddenly he heard a little sound from his feet. It was Mij! The otter jumped onto his lap and started to nuzzle Maxwell’s face and neck, happy to be with him again.

Mij and I stayed in London for almost a month. He loved playing with his toys, like ping-pong balls, marbles, rubber fruit, and even a terrapin shell that I had brought from his home in the marshes. Mij made up his own game with the ping-pong ball. He would place it on a suitcase that was broken and slanted. The ball would roll down to the low end, and Mij would run to the other end to wait for it. He would hide and then jump out to grab the ball and carry it back to the high end again.

Outside, I would walk Mij on a leash, just like walking a dog. On these walks, Mij started to develop funny habits. For example, like some children do, he would always step in the middle of each paving block. He would touch every seventh pole of the iron fence or walk around every second lamp post.

Across from my flat was a small school with a low wall in front. Mij would always stop in front of this wall on his way home, but not when he was leaving. He would pull me to the wall, jump onto it, and run all the way across it. The children and teachers at the school would get very distracted watching Mij run on the wall!

It wasn't surprising that people in London didn't recognize an otter, but I was amazed at all the different guesses they made about what kind of animal Mij was. Otters belong to a group of animals called Mustellines, which also include badgers, weasels, minks, and others. But instead of guessing "otter," people came up with all kinds of funny ideas! Some thought Mij was a "baby seal" or "a squirrel." One person even asked, "Is that a walrus, mister?" That made me laugh! Outside a dog show, someone said, "A hippo!" Other guesses included a beaver, a bear cub, a leopard (one that had changed its spots!), and even a "brontosaur."

But the funniest question came from a worker who was digging a hole in the street. He saw Mij from far away and stopped working. As I got closer, I could see his surprised face, like he didn't like being tricked. When I reached him, he spat, stared at Mij, and growled, "Hey mister, what is that supposed to be?"

Introduction
