Bow Market and Somerville Cub Scouts Pack 3 is excited to host the 1st annual Bow Market Pine-Car Derby! On Sunday, April 26th (Rain Date Sunday, May 3rd). Participants and teams in this all-ages event will create a car from a block of wood to race for prizes. Funds raised will support scouting in Somerville.

What is a Pine-Car Derby?

What is a Pine-Car Derby? Inspired by Scouting’s Pinewood Derby, our Pine-Car derby lets participants build a model car from scratch with pinewood, wheels, axles and a bit of creativity. The cars roll down a special sloped track and the first one to the finish gate wins. See a video clip of the Pack 3 2025 Pinewood Derby here.

The official kit can be bought at the infosession on 4/4, at the Scout Shop in Woburn, online from the Scout shop, or online at Amazon (they’re more expensive on Amazon).

We are offering two categories: One for classic cars that meet all the standard rules of Pinewood Derby cars and the Somervillain category where almost anything goes.

Please read the linked Rules and Frequently Asked Questions document for specific rules. It’s trickier than you’d think to create a car that meets requirements for this classic race, and it requires a bit of strategy to win. If a car registered for the classic race does not comply with classic race rules at check-in, their registration will be transferred to the Somervillain race so long as they meet the rules of that race. If a car does not comply with the rules of either race, it cannot race but it will still be eligible for the design awards.

The Somervillian: This race will be for folks to really push the pinewood to its limit!

        Participation is limited to 50 cars, you must register before race day

The Bow Market Pine-Car derby is a fundraiser supporting Somerville Pack 3 Cub Scouting activities and gear as well as registration fees and dues for kids and families who need financial support to participate.   Meet Santa:
  We are thrilled to have you meet Santa at Bow Market. Please book Santa appointment ahead of time AND carefully read these instructions to ensure North Pole-level efficiency!

  • Your appointment with Santa costs $20 or $5 if you bring a new toy for the Freedom Fighters Toy Drive. Proceeds will benefit research clinic at Tufts Medical Center -Oncology and Hematology department run by Dr. Andreas Klein.

  • You can pay with cash, PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo onsite. You can not pay with a credit card.

  • Santa will be located in Upstairs at Bow on the 2nd floor across from the elevator.

  • Please arrive on time for your 30-minute window.

  • Your appointment guarantees you roughly 10 minutes of Santa's time.

  • You can bring as many children (pets or friends) as you would like, but if you need more than 10 minutes, please schedule and pay for an additional appointment.

  • Meet Santa will take place during the Santa & Sweets Holiday Fundraiser. There will be a bake sale, holiday drinks, and crafts.

Somerville Art Fair - Nov. Artist Showcase

Friday, November 21st from 7-9pm

Discover art in Bow Market’s beautiful event space Upstairs at Bow where you can explore, ask questions, and connect with local artists. Join us this Friday, Nov 21st for the fourth artist showcase in this event series and discover meaningful local art that make incredibly thoughtful holiday gifts.

This Friday’s showcase will highlights two local artists:

Halle Cooper – “My art practice is a celebration of vulnerability, gratitude, and love, deepened by the context of pain. Using vibrant colors and whimsy, I strive to create playful but heartfelt work exploring the overlap between joy and suffering. As I continue to establish myself as an artist, I'm influenced by a life shaped by chronic illness, as well as my background in environmental and marine science.”

Julia Emiliani – “The natural world is a source of inspiration for my artistic work – landscapes, plants, fruits, and the sky catch my eye the most. I am intrigued by the vibrant life in elements we otherwise pass by, overlook, or consume. I use my work as a means of exploring and documenting these elements. With rich color and a keen sense of natural light and shadow, I aim to convey the chromatic aliveness of this subject matter.”

SAVE THE DATE for the final Somerville Holiday Art Fair event on Saturday, December 13th from 12-4pm in Upstairs at Bow. This culminating event is a full art fair featuring all 2025 participating artists. It will be the perfect event to shop local art for a loved one this holiday season or bring a friend to the even and enjoy art together.

Merriest Month invites guests to experience the joy of the season through a lineup of events, special activations, and holiday programming that highlight the warmth of the Bow Market community.

Woodcraft Pop-Up – Debut Collection by Maine Craftsman David Lebel  

When: 11/7 4-8, 11/8 11-7, 11/9 11-6 [Friday through Sunday]

Join us for the debut of Twice Turned – wooden objects handmade by Maine-based craftsman David Lebel. David has transformed the trees he has salvaged over decades of work as a builder and arborist into beautiful, functional objects: bowls, salt & pepper shakers, treasure boxes, cutting boards & more. David is so excited to bring these pieces out of the woodshop and into the world for the first time. This weekend will be the only place that all of David’s work is available for purchase before a limited collection is launched online. Customization of pieces (freehand wood-burned inscriptions) will also be available on the spot for the perfect personalized gift!
