In TV: Seinfeld, King of the Hill and Bob's Burgers all get a bit of time until we dive into Stranger Things discussions (no spoilers) and whether the fourth season of that is actually any good.

In books: New Yorker movie critic Pauline Kael's greatest hits get a new life on Nathan's iPad along with Berserk?! Also, Cruelly Yours, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark, and Leviathan Wakes (the first book of The Expanse series)

The Outer Worlds is finally given it's due diligence and some baseball talks around Nathan seeing an Okotoks Dawgs game before getting a little bitter about The Batman and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and in general the MCU Phase 4 properties at large. At least Jurassic World Dominion is good under the influence of some happy time drugs.

To end things off, we have a discussion about Jeff Gerstmann leaving Giant Bomb and Nathan finally played Dungeons & Dragons when he and some friends got together to do the Tomb of Horror module.

Although starting off as a World of Warcraft podcast, Ventchat has quickly become a favorite comedy show for many (including us at Pixel Response). With nothing more than a couple of base ideas per show, it's the chemistry between the four hosts ("Fen", "Esta", "Sauce" and "Turdhat" that takes the standard 'Morning Radio Show' format to something very unique and special.

Fen was gracious enough to set aside some time to chat with Paul and we're happy to provide a small chunk of the talk to you in which the two discuss things like smoking, the podcast patent troll, anonymity on the internet and video games.

Oh, I suppose they talk a bit about Ventchat too.

Benjamin Rivers has an impressive portfolio of illustration and design to his name, but it was his ambient horror/thriller game Home that first got our attention. Praised and (sometimes unfairly) disregarded for its rather unorthodox approach to narrative, Home forces the player to create their own narrative in their heads by providing as little context as possible while letting them choose how in-depth they choose to go.
It isn’t surprising that Ben would prefer a good story over much of anything else, but it was surprising to hear just how far his stories go.

Babble Tea - 01 - Ryan Francis (Thankskilling)

Ryan started acting at the young age of 5 years, and has been performing ever since. He played drums in a female-fronted political punk band called Overated for 9-years, before shooting his first full-length film, "Thankskilling". Overated toured all over the Midwest, appearing with bands such as The Riverboat Gamblers, The Misfits, Killola, Strike Anywhere, and many more (see website).

During that time, Ryan had a huge interest in film, attending Ohio University in 2005, right after high school, for a short amount of time, working as a sound tech for various college projects. One in particular, called "Pinned", directed by Patrick Norman, was favored by Ryan. He is residing in Columbus, OH where he runs his record label, REF Records, and performs as a nerd-core hip-hop artist that the locals know as "Huge Euge".

Eno Metzo from The Awful Gamer joins Paul as they talk to Ryan Francis, known by many in the B-Rated indie horror fandom as "Darren the Nerd" from ThanksKilling and Huge Euge to his local nerdcore hip-hop fans. We talk about how great "shitty" indie horror can be, Ryan's upcoming projects (including something involving becoming a juggalo) and even Final Fantasy VII!

Calvin French has been making games for awhile but this past year released The Real Texas to surprisingly receptive critical attention from sites such as Giant Bomb and Destructoid. With The Real Texas boasting the description of a mashup of Zelda: Link to the Past and Ultima VI, there is little surprise to find that Calvin has a particular respect and appreciation for very specific games from his childhood. We talk about what makes a good game, inspirations and the qualities of explosive trucks.

This week. Paul built a new gaming PC and in turn has played a handful of everything on it (which he quickly breaks down in a bit more detail). Most importantly, he also beat the latest Xbox Live Summer of Arcade release of Deadlight and describes in some detail how shitty it really is. Nathan, on the other hand has only played a bit of DayZ which he’s quite fond of so far while finding time to see the fake Total Recall, Pet Sematary and In Time.

Also, Nathan discloses some personal grievances with religion, family members and the United States vigilantism attitude while Paul finds out his stance on orgies.

Luckily, he was able to pull away from Tamriel long enough to go out and see three major releases including Brave, Magic Mike(yes, that male stripper movie) and Ted. Marc has been in somewhat of the same situation as Paul but describes some Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion and helps Nathan out with some advice on feeding his cat.

Also, Paul sets a new standard in the proper way to eat peanut butter.

This week, Paul hasn’t watched a single movie due to spending all his time trying to catch up on Naruto (34 episodes down, only 451 to go…) and Legend of Korra. Between anime and movies, both the monks have been gaming quite a bit as Nathan finally picks up Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and can’t turn it off long enough to fully realize Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker while Paul hits up a double feature of Suda51 by returning back into Shadows of the Damned and enjoying the colorful nature of Lollipop Chainsaw. Speaking of video games, everyone should probably go ahead and sign-up for PlayStation Plus right away and start getting free shit. Just saying.

Both the monks saw Prometheus and talk about their thoughts on that while Paul is unimpressed with Snow White and the Huntsmen. Also, music from the 90s and pinpointing the year Paul lost interest in what was “popular” in music.

This week, Paul finally starts his quest to catch up on Game of Thrones and knocks down four episodes while also finishing off season 3 of Community. Nathan agrees with the New York Times about Game of Thrones’ lacking in draw lately and tries some Lilyhammer on Netflix while continuing on with more Eastbound and Down. Both the monks went to see Men in Black 3 and discuss it in depth and Paul talks a bit about Chernobyl Diaries before his review went up. Nathan still loves Animal Crossing and Max Payne 3 while Paul finds it hard to get into Diablo III and spends more time playing the indie game Decay.

Also, a discussion on Geek Pride Day sparks a chat about Remembrance Day, which Nathan feels strongly about. And YOLO is kind of a stupid term with a decent message.

The Media Monks: Episode 27 - Mahalo, Muthafu - !

This week, a yearly convention named Otafest hits town so Paul and Nathan recount their differing experiences with that including awkward Fleshlight situations, over-sexualized 14 year olds and a random guy masturbating in the bathroom. Nathan watched Blues Brothers again for the first time in years and goes to see The Dictator while Paul catches Men in Black II on television in preparation for MiB3 this weekend and tries to sit through Land of the Lost (but can’t do more than 30 minutes).

Both the Monks went to see Battleship this week and talk a little bit about their disappointments with that (mostly Nathan because Paul simply agrees with him). In more pertinent news, Dan Harmon gets fired from Community which leads to a rather angry conversation about the future of the show. Oh, also Diablo III is OK and Max Payne 3 is pretty good

The Media Monks: Episode 21 - Death To Gorillaz

Some technical issues this week. About an hour in Paul’s connection completely dropped out and there was a good hour-and-a-half of time between the initial recording and the ending.

This week, Nathan is leaving for a couple of days to drive down to the United States of America for some small thing called Coachella or something to listen to some rap music. We get talking a bit about some of the bands we’d like to see at Coachella and come to the conclusion that we would see completely different things were we both there. Odd Future gets some follow-up with Paul, who still doesn’t like it and we talk a bit about Damon Albarn basically saying that Gorillaz and Blur are over, much to our despair. Nathan watched a rather entertaining Assault on Precinct 13 type Indonesian film called The Raid: Redemption and praises the good times he had watching television series episodes that Paul needs to catch up on. Paul has been spending a lot of time reading and listening to some different view points on random stuff, including a youtube content creator name TheAmazingAtheist which sparks a conversation about politics, feminism and, of course, Religion and God(s). To finish up, Paul discusses some fun plans for next week’s episode due to Nathan’s absence.

It’s the Easter holiday which means no movies are out that are worth talking about and our unlikely heroes find themselves too busy to watch anything more than television shows (a true task as neither of them have any form of cable!). Paul has spent the majority of his week embarking on more ridiculous self-discovery nonsense with bits of The IT Crowd, old Saturday Night Live sketches and L.A. Ink thrown in to waste some time.

Nathan has spent some time with two movies, a bunch of Star Trek: The Next Generation from the library and the new HBO series Game Of Thrones. Leonard Nimoy will be taking on a voice role in the next Transformers movie, some rumors are put to rest about roles cast in The Dark Knight Rises and Robert Deniro wants to work with Scorsese again.

Nothing else really worth talking about out in theaters this week as neither of us bothered to see Rio, Nathan has once again overstepped Paul in movies by a huge margin. Nic Cage was arrested and bailed out by Dog the Bounty Hunter and “The Hunger Games” movie adaptation gets a couple more names added to the roster.
