This comes following a tragic shooting at Western Psych (a hospital and mental health facility right on campus). Yet that shooting had no pretense or warning. But in the “post-9/11 world” every threat must be taken seriously. If there was even one small incident with one student or employee (or a visitor/potential student) there would be enormous outcry for NOT taking these seriously enough. But, even after more than a dozen threats though, the campus police and the FBI cannot determine which threat is credible and which is not. And once a reward was offered, the threats began to increase.

And now with that many classes having been cancelled and finals approaching (graduation is at the end of April), should students begin asking for tuition refunds? Are students even wrong for asking that the semester just be cancelled? What about the graduation ceremony? Within the past 48 hours, threat frequency has increased, with the perpetrator(s) (and/or copycats)  becoming more brazen.

As of this writing, Pitt has gone 11 hours without a bomb threat alert, according to Pitt ENS History, a site dedicated to noting each threat and length of time since the last one. There’s even a blog that went up this week, devoted  to finding this psychopath and trying to find links and discuss theories (Stop the Pitt Bomb Threats).

So far, there’s no indication if it is a student or not a student. There also isn’t full information on how these threats came in.  Some come from women’s restrooms, others men’s restrooms. Some are written, some are e-mail. (I guess this person(s) likes variety?)

Who could this joke possibly be? Look at motives, right? Who has an axe to grind at Pitt itself? (Pretty much every student, former student, employee. Especially after tuition hikes, cuts, pay increase stops, diminishing class choice and scholarships.) Or an axe to grind with someone at Pitt? (Freshmen after all, are unstable, dealing with a lot of emotional and academic transition. And the dorms that have been targeted are traditionally freshmen/sophomore dorms.)  But these buildings on campus that have received threats all serve very different groups of students and faculty.   The Cathedral is obviously the most targeted for its stature and prominence on campus.  There’s no clear link. But I’m not an intelligence agent, maybe there is?

Notably, the student union or any events have NOT been targeted. Soldiers and Sailors even had a Congressional representative visit there this week, without any threat whatsoever. Events have gone at Petersen, the Union, and around campus without interference. However, now with dorms being targeted, clearly the suspect is aiming at disrupting more of life on campus other than academics. I cannot say I would be surprised if that changed though, especially now that the targets are becoming multiple at a time.

But in my view, this all goes back to what I pointed out in the beginning of the post. Our intelligence is severely limited,  hampered, and does not get the adequate attention and focus it deserves. This is only making more of a mockery of  intelligence in this country as it is.   After all, this state can spend thousands/millions going after Occupy, building prisons, and throwing people (needlessly and not) into them, yet cannot catch some joker (probably jokers) committing these threats and essentially causing what terrorism wants from us. Chaos. Fear. Intimidation. Frustration.

Now, Twitter is a-tweeting about doors being off in the stalls in restrooms, talks about cameras being placed everywhere, security guards watching you taking a shit. This is NOT intelligence. They simply cannot put a guard in every restroom on campus It is unreasonable to think they will have the manpower to .  This is merely a ruse to make it seem like the FBI and police know what they are doing. They are simply responding, instead of seeking.  Until then, students and faculty will continue to be disrupted until this jerk is caught and not just that, but every single one of them will now be  a suspect.   Hopefully, we can return to some sense of normalcy soon.
