Arsene Wenger's farewell speech in full after Arsenal's final home game

Arsene Wenger made an emotional speech on the Emirates pitch at the end of his last home game as Arsenal manager.

The long-serving boss was given a guard of honour ahead of the Gunners' 5-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates, which secured sixth spot in the league.

Nearly 22 year since he first set foot on the pitch at Arsenal's former ground, Highbury, the 68-year-old ended his day with a direct address to the still-packed home stands at the Emirates, after receiving a long chorus of "One Arsene Wenger" from the club's supporters, who were each given a 'Merci Arsene' t-shirt.

"Thank you every much," he said. "Before I start, I just want to wish my fellow manager Alex Ferguson well. Thank you for having me for such a long time. I know that's not easy.

"But above all, I am like you, I am an Arsenal fan. This is more than just watching football, it's a way of life. It's caring about the beautiful game, about the values we cherish, and as well, that something that goes for all our bodies in every cell of our bodies. We care, we worry, we are desperate, but when you come here, the theatre of dreams we realise what it means.

"I would like as well to thank everyone at the club who makes it so special, I would invite you, really push, support these players and the staff who remains behind me, these group of players has a special quality. Not only on the pitch, but off the pitch. Please, as you follow this team, support them next season because they deserve it.

"I would like to finish in one simple sentence: I will miss you. Thank you all for having such an important part of my life, thank you all, well done, bye bye."

Ribery signs one-year Bayern extension

Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery has signed a one-year contract extension with the Bundesliga side.

The 35-year-old Frenchman had been linked with a move away from the German champions in the summer.

He has scored 117 goals in 385 appearances and won the Bundesliga eight times with Bayern since joining them in 2007 from Marseille.

“I’m very proud to have another year here - Munich has become a home for me and my family,” Ribery said.

Thierry Henry pays tribute to 'visionary' Arsene Wenger

Arsenal record goalscorer Thierry Henry paid tribute to Arsene Wenger after the Frenchman's final game in charge at the Emirates.

Wenger led the Gunners to three Premier League titles - two while Henry was at the club - and seven FA Cups during his time in north London.

After almost 22 years, first at Highbury and, since 2006, the Emirates Stadium, Henry told Sky Sports the Frenchman would take some time to adjust to life post-Arsenal.

He said: "He was there from 7.30am until 6 or 7 at night, watching games and loving the club. It's going to be difficult for someone doing something for so long with the club he loves to just leave.

"It's not an easy thing to just call a day. He loves to be on the grass, smelling grass, he has a vision and he's a visionary. He always thinks his team can achieve things and thinks his team can achieve what he wants.

"Whether you agree or disagree, he goes to that extent to believe that. We met the expectations in our generation and a bit before.

"At times, he had that belief in that team which unfortunately didn't meet the expectation in the league. I can only say one thing about him, and that's thank you.

"The man he was for me. He was a father figure, he helped me to become a better player, unlocked stuff in my brain that was sometimes stopping myself, things that are obvious but at 22 you're trying to find out the player you can be."

Henry arrived at Highbury as a talented but raw striker, but left Arsenal as the club's top scorer and described as world class - something he said Wenger had a huge impact on.

He said: "I had a natural talent in the way I was a striker, I tried to work a lot and train to make my game a bit better, but I used to go in his office and say: "When I run there, when they've got the ball they don't see me."

"He'd say: 'Thierry, ask yourself the right question - do you think that guy can see you?' I realised he couldn't and I started to move and adapt my game to others. He had the way to make you believe you were the best player in the world, and then like I always say, gave you that freedom to go out and execute it.

"He gave you that belief that you go out there and execute it. As everyone knows, the understanding we had with him.

"We rowed a lot. I like to be right, he likes to be right, especially from me. To be honest, it's difficult - when I was upset as a player, I'd get upset wherever I was. I always say though, to have an argument it's for the good of the team.

"You argue with your dad, you argue with your mum, you argue with your brother."

Ibrahim: Djoliba win good for Enyimba’s confidence

Enyimba FC striker, Mustapha Ibrahim has said the 2-0 victory over Djoliba of Mali in their opening match of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage is good for team confidence.

The former African champions recorded a convincing 2-0 win over the Malian giants on Sunday at the UJ Esuene stadium Calabar to begin their group stage campaign on a promising note.

Ibrahim who saw 90 minutes of action in the keenly contested encounter said the match was a difficult one but the ‘peoples elephants’ showed the right fighting spirit to get the desired result.

He told Daily Trust yesterday that the victory over Djoliba will motivate the team going into the other group matches.

Enyimba FC are in the same group C with CARA Brazzaville of Congo, Williamsville of Cote’ d’Ivoire and Djoliba of Mali.

“It was a very difficult match but we did our best to start the group stage on a winning note. The victory has brought us so much confidence.

“Our opponents came with a game plan but we persevered to the end. The opening minutes were hard to deal with but we eventually settled into the match.

“We hope to build on this victory as we prepare to face our other group opponents,” he said.

Ibrahim however said there will be no complacency because the league has reached a stage that every mistake will prove costly.

Enyimba will next travel to Congo to face CARA Brazzaville on Wednesday, May 16 before returning home to play against Williamsville on July 17.

Buhari on fresh 4-day medical trip to UK

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday (today) undertake a four-day trip to the United Kingdom to see his doctor.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malan Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

He said in the course of the technical stopover for aircraft maintenance in London on his way back from Washington last week, Buhari had a meeting with his doctor.

The presidential spokesman stated that the doctor requested the president to return for a meeting which he (Buhari) agreed to do.

Shehu said President Buhari would return on Saturday.

The presidential spokesman was silent on whether the president had transmitted a letter to the National Assembly to inform the legislature of his medical trip.

He said on his return, the president’s two-day state visit to Jigawa, which was postponed because of the All Progressives Congress, APC’s Ward Congresses, would take place on Monday and Tuesday.

President Buhari returned from London last August after undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment for over three months.

Corruption: Secondus, others will soon be docked — Presidency

The national chairman of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus and all other politicians against whom the anti-corruption agencies had ongoing investigations will soon have their days in court, the Presidency said.

Reacting to a letter to the United Nations Secretary General by Secondus, the Presidency said the opposition party was trying to mislead the UN.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement yesterday said “It is only a matter of time before the law catches up with them and makes them pay for the grief their mismanagement of the past has caused and is still causing Nigerians.”

The Presidency said the letter to the UN accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of several infractions confirms the PDP as a ‘bad loser’ desperate for another chance after being kicked out for failing the country.

Shehu described Secondus’ letter as preposterous and comical, while blasting the opposition party for accusing the Federal Government of destroying Nigeria’s democracy.

He alleged that Nigerians suffered because of “the poison sowed by the PDP”, saying the war against corruption, “for which many more politicians may soon be docked”, could not be misrepresented as an attack on human rights.

RUSSIA: Putin sworn in as president for fourth term

Vladimir Putin has been inaugurated as the president of Russia for the fourth time, renewing another six-year term in office. The 65-year-old Russian leader took oath at an official ceremony in the Grand Kremlin Palace in the capital, Moscow, on Monday, 18 years after he first came to power.

Putin’s fourth presidential term comes after he easily won the elections in March, receiving 76 percent of the votes.

“I consider it my duty and sense of my life to do everything for Russia for its present and future - for the peaceful and prosperous future - and the welfare of every Russian family,” Putin said in a speech at the ceremony.

Melaye: IGP must appear before Senate — Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki said the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, must appear before the Senate over the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye and other security issues in the country.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Saraki said they had reported the IGP to the President over his refusal to honour Senate invitations.

“We also raised the issue of the non-appearance of the IG at the Senate and felt that they must continue to ensure that he continues to apply obedience to the issue of constituted authority.

“We are of great concern that this is the first time this is happening and that that matter needs to be addressed considering the importance of the powers of the Constitution that gives investigative powers, also gives to us and that there is need for police to accept that they too are under constitution and they must obey that. We raised that concern,” he said

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who also attended the meeting, said the police behaved like “upgraded barbarians” by taking Senator Melaye to Lokoja on a stretcher last week.

Dogara said he and Saraki met behind closed doors with President Buhari.

The speaker maintained that wheeling people to court does not portray a good image of the nation’s democracy.

“On the issue of Senator Dino, of course, anything that happens to one of our members or any member of the National Assembly is of concern to us. And there is no way we can have this kind of meeting without raising that.

“This is a civilian administration, its democracy and it’s imperative and very important that all institutions of democracy operate within the ambit of the rule of law,” Dogara said.

43 persons killed in Adamawa, Zamfara

Fourty three people were killed in fresh outbreak of violence in rural Adamawa and Zamfara states.

Reports from Adamawa State said 30 people were killed by gunmen that attacked three villages in Numan Local Area of the state. Many others are said to be missing.

In Zamfara, 13 people were killed in a clash between suspected armed bandits and vigilantes in Fankashi village, Maru Local Government Area.

Residents reported that the attackers stormed six villages including Bolki, Bang and Gon at about 7 pm on Wednesday night and burnt houses and shot at fleeing residents.

Arnold Jibila, the chairman of Numan Local Government told Daily Trust yesterday he suspected herdsmen to have carried out the attack.

He said the affected areas were part of hot spot for conflict between farmers and herders.

“I am just coming out of the place; so far 30 people have been confirmed dead while many are still missing. Women and children scattered during the attack, so we are still assessing the damage,” he said.

However, the police spokesman in Adamawa, SP Abubakar Othman said the attackers killed 15 villagers and razed 150 houses.

He said a unit of mobile police men had been deployed to restore peace in the affected communities.

The communal attacks occurred two days after a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in Mubi where at least 28 worshippers were killed.

Bandits, vigilantes clash 13 dead in Zamfara

In Zamfara state 13 people were killed in clash between bandits and vigilantes in Fankashi village of Maru local government area.

The attack came barely three weeks after 27 people were killed in a deadly raid on Kabaro village in Dansadau district of Maru Local Government.

The spokesman of the state police DSP Muhammad Shehu told Daily Trust that some residents of Fankashi community had earlier intercepted and executed two suspected armed bandits.

He said some days later, the vigilantes gathered in a forest near Fankashi, a village located 20 km north of Dansadau town to hold a meeting on how to deal with the threat by the armed bandits in the area.

“But when the armed bandits learnt that the vigilantes were holding a meeting in the forest, they stormed the area on motorbikes firing at anyone in sight, in what appeared to be a pre-emptive attack.

“However, the local vigilantes resisted them and fought back resulting in the death of 13 people from both sides,” he added.

DSP Shehu explained that security operatives had cordoned the area and investigation had commenced.

However, a resident of the area, Babangida Halilu, told Daily Trust that the attack came after some residents of the community had taken over farmlands belonging to some suspected armed bandits.

“The armed bandits raided the village and carted away many camels belonging to the residents. They demanded to be paid large sums of money before they would release camels but the residents refused to give in to their demands. They, therefore, decided to attack the community,” he said.

Zamfara: 151 deaths in 3 months

With Tuesday’s attack on Fankashi village, the death toll from attacks on the Zamfara rural communities has hit 151 from January to date.

Zamfara state has suffered series of horrific assaults by suspected armed bandits and cattle rustlers since 2011.

In the middle of February this year, suspected armed bandits struck in Birane village in Zurmi Local Government Area and killed at least 41 people.

Some weeks later, the armed bandits killed at least 62 in Bawar Daji, Kuru-Kuru and Jarkuka villages all in Anka local government area of the state.

Anka local government area has the largest casualties from the attacks so far this year following the deadly raids on its three communities.

Many residents lament that there seems to be no end in sight to the menace of armed banditry and cattle rustling in the state.

Four weeks ago, troops deployed for the operation Sharar Daji said they had killed 21 armed bandits near Tungar Daji village in Anka local government, even though they lost two soldiers in the gun battle.

Earlier, governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar had given an order to the security operatives to shoot at sight anyone they found bearing illegal firearms or any kidnapper in the state.

A couple of weeks ago, suspected armed bandits killed at least 27 people in attacks on Kabaro and Danmani villages in Maru local government area.

The attack on Kabaro, a village located 24 km west of Dansadau town came six years after at least 18 people were shot dead by armed bandits and cattle rustlers in the same community. Many residents were killed in a similar raid on the community in October 2012.

The troubled Dansadau district is one of the areas hard hit by the activities of armed bandits and cattle rustlers. The notorious cattle rustling kingpin called Buharin Daji was killed in a forest near Dansadau town sometime ago.

APC holds ward congresses tomorrow

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will tomorrow hold congresses in all the 9572 electoral wards in the country where delegates will emerge.

The ward congresses would set the stage for congresses in the 774 local government areas and the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Our correspondent reports that many members of the National Assembly have gone back to their states to take part in the processes.

Party members hoping to vie for elective offices were also mobilizing to have a say on how the delegates would emerge. This was amidst allegations in many states that governors were trying to hijack the process.

It is from the delegates that will emerge at the ward level that those who would take part at the local government level would be selected. The same process would be followed at the state level and thereafter for those that would go to the national convention where members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party would emerge.

Delegates are key to electoral victory and most politicians do whatever it takes to have as many as possible in their camp.

In a statement last week, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said ward congress would hold on May 5; local government on May 12; and state congress on May 19.

He said the exact date of the national convention scheduled to hold in June would be announced later.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said on Friday the Commission spent only N100million on the failed bid to recall the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye.

Yakubu said at a press conference in Abuja that the figure was nowhere near the N100billion reported in several quarters.

He said: “A recall exercise is just like conducting a Senatorial election. The Kogi-West which Melaye represents has 552 polling units and seven local governments.”
