Vorarbeiten zum grossen Band Romantik, den Rüdiger Safranski vor Jahren schrieb, nach seinen Monagrophien ueber Goethe, Schiller und Nietzsche und Heidegger.

Ich lese fast alle Buecher von ihm, war er doch wissenschaftlicher Assistent in meiner Studentenzeit in der Rostlaube der FU in Westberlin (1971 bis 1977).

Damals stand die Humboldt Universität bekanntlich unter kommunistischer Verwaltung in der Hauptstadt der DDR.

Safranski setzt den Aufgang der Romantik um 1800 an: zuerst in Literatur und Philosophie, dann in den übrigen Künsten, am hellsten in der Musik.

Sie war so erfolgreich, dass das Ausland das typisch Deutsche bis heute oft mit dem Romantischen gleichsetzt.

Dann folgen Novalis, Tieck, Hölderlin, Eichendorff und andere in der Literatur, Fichte und Schelling in der Philosophie, Runge und C. D. Friedrich in der Malerei, Schubert und Schumann in der Musik.

Die Orte sind besonders Jena, der Kreis um Caroline Schlegel und ihren Mann, danach Dresden, Berlin, Heidelberg und Tübingen.

Romantik war dabei nicht nur Geist, sondern auch Klatsch, Liebelei und Lebensexperimente wie sehr viel spaeter die Hippies.

Nach dem Vorbild der Französischen Revolution sollte es viele kleine Lebensrevolutionen auch in Deutschland geben.

Die Wanderburschen und Handwerksgesellen, und auch die Taugenichts verewigt von Eichendorf folgten den Geheimnissen dieser Welt in Europa und lauschten dem Posthorn: Ach, wer da mitwandern koennte …

Sie ziehen hinaus in die weite Welt, weil das Zuhause zu eng geworden ist.

Die Stube des Vaters, das Kontor, die Amtsstube, das alles riecht viel zu sehr nach Pflicht und Staub.

Draußen in der freien Welt und Natur dagegen ist alles möglich. Der Weg führt in den Wald, und der Wald ist nicht finster, sondern ein Raum voller Stimmen. Die Ferne lockt, und sie lockt gerade deshalb, weil man nie ankommt.

Die Romantiker haben die Sehnsucht nicht erfunden, aber sie haben sie zur Lebensform gemacht.

Dabei war die Romantik keineswegs nur weltfremd. Ihre Köpfe waren hellwach, belesen, oft scharfzüngig.

Friedrich Schlegel schrieb Fragmente, die wie Funken sprühen. Novalis war Bergbauingenieur, bevor er der Dichter der Blauen Blume wurde. Schelling las die Natur wie ein Buch, in dem der Geist sich selbst begegnet. Man wollte das Ganze, nicht das Stückwerk: Kunst, Wissenschaft, Religion und Liebe sollten wieder eins werden. Das war ein ungeheurer Anspruch, und er musste scheitern. Doch im Scheitern entstanden Gedichte, Märchen und Lieder, die bis heute leben.

Die Romantik hatte auch ihre Schattenseiten. Wer das Wunderbare sucht, verachtet leicht das Gewöhnliche. Wer die Nacht feiert, misstraut dem Tag und mit ihm auch die Vernunft.

Hölderlin zerbrach an der Welt, Kleist nahm sich das Leben, und manche der jungen Revolutionäre landeten später im Schoß von Kirche und Staat. Das Romantische trug von Anfang an zwei Gesichter: die Befreiung der Phantasie und die Flucht aus der Wirklichkeit des Alltags.

Die folgenden Texte (Auswahl) sind Stationen dieser Bewegung. Sie sind kurz, man kann sie an einem Abend lesen. Am besten bei schlechtem Wetter, wenn draußen der Regen gegen die Scheiben schlägt und drinnen die Lampe brennt. Denn das ist vielleicht das Geheimnis der Romantik: Sie braucht das deutsche Sauwetter, um die Wärme der Innerlichkeit zu entdecken.

Rüdiger Safranski über eine deutsche Affäre

Es ist Oktober 2026 an der Gold Coast.

Der Jacaranda blüht, das Meer ist warm, und ich lese erneut über die deutsche Romantik.

Romantik ist in Deutschland lebend eine Sache für Nebel, Wald und lange Winterabende.

Hier gibt es selten Nebel. Allerdings Regentage wie heute und Nebelwolken ueber dem Suedpazifik, so das die Wolkenkratzer mit den Ferienwohnungen am Meer im Dunst verschwinden.

Hier in der Ferne bemerkt man klarer, wie deutsch diese romantische Bewegung war und wie sie bis heute fortdauert.

Vor wenigen Tagen sass ich im langsamen Zug nach Bonn und genoss wie so oft im deutschen Sommer die Strecke am Rhein entlang nach Norden.

Ich stelle Ihnen heute zwei Bücher von Rüdiger Safranski vor, die zusammengehören: ein dünnes Heft und einen dicken Band. Beide erschienen 2007 bei Hanser in München. Beide eignen sich, so meine ich, als Weihnachtsgeschenk für Leserinnen und Leser, die Deutsch nicht nur lernen, sondern auch verstehen wollen, woher bestimmte deutsche Denkweisen und Wendungen kommen.

Das kleine Heft: „Romantik – was sonst bei dem Sauwetter?“

Der Titel ist witzig, und er funktioniert. „Sauwetter“ ist ein umgangssprachliches Wort für sehr schlechtes Wetter: Regen, Wind, Kälte. Die Frage dahinter: Was soll man bei diesem Wetter anderes tun, als romantisch zu werden? In Deutschland ist das eine echte Frage.

Das Heft ist schmal, kaum fünfzig Seiten. Es war eine sogenannte Jahresgabe des Verlags, ein kleines Geschenk, das Buchhandlungen an ihre Kunden weitergaben. Heute bekommt man es antiquarisch oft für ein, zwei Euro. Safranski hat darin kurze Lesestücke aus der Romantik zusammengestellt und jedem Text eine kleine Einleitung vorangestellt. Man liest Novalis und seine Suche nach der Blauen Blume, Eichendorff und Chamisso, den späten Hölderlin nach Trauer und Enttäuschung. Und man liest Wackenroders seltsame Geschichte vom nackten Heiligen, der das Rad der Zeit unaufhörlich rauschen hört und es selbst in Bewegung halten muss.

Das Heft ist ein Appetithappen. Es will nicht erklären, es will Lust machen. Für Deutschlernende auf fortgeschrittenem Niveau ist es ideal: kurze Texte, klare Einleitungen, keine Angst vor dicken Büchern. Man kann es in einer Stunde lesen und hat danach mehr von der Romantik verstanden als nach mancher Schulstunde.

Das große Buch: „Romantik. Eine deutsche Affäre“

Der Hauptgang hat rund vierhundert Seiten. Auf dem Umschlag sieht man ein Gemälde: Ein Mann in roter Jacke und weißer Hose lehnt an einem Felsen, mit Stock, den Kopf gesenkt, vor dunklem Hintergrund. Er ruht sich aus, oder er denkt nach, oder er ist einfach müde. Das ist schon sehr romantisch: ein Einzelner, die Natur und eine Stimmung, die man nicht ganz erklären kann.

Auf der Rückseite steht ein berühmter Satz von Novalis. Sinngemäß sagt er: Wer dem Gewöhnlichen etwas Geheimnisvolles gibt und dem Endlichen einen unendlichen Schein, der romantisiert. Das ist die kürzeste Definition der Romantik, die ich kenne.

Safranskis wichtigste Unterscheidung steht gleich am Anfang. Es gibt die Romantik als Epoche, ungefähr von 1795 bis 1830. Und es gibt das Romantische als Geisteshaltung, die bis heute wirkt. Das Buch hat entsprechend zwei Teile.

Der erste Teil erzählt die Epoche. Safranski ist Biograf, er hat große Bücher über Schiller, Goethe, Nietzsche und Heidegger geschrieben. Das merkt man. Er erzählt Ideen nicht abstrakt, sondern über Menschen: die Brüder Schlegel in Jena, Novalis, Tieck, Wackenroder, Schleiermacher, den Philosophen Schelling, später E.T.A. Hoffmann und Eichendorff. Man sieht Freundschaften entstehen und zerbrechen, junge Leute in Wohngemeinschaften, Liebesgeschichten, Streit. Die Romantik war auch eine Jugendbewegung. Das macht dieses Kapitel lebendig, fast wie einen Roman.

Der zweite Teil verfolgt das Romantische weiter: über Richard Wagner und Nietzsche zu Thomas Mann, zum Kreis um Stefan George, zur Jugendbewegung um 1900, zu Heidegger, zum Missbrauch romantischer Mythen im Nationalsozialismus und schließlich zu den Achtundsechzigern. Hier wird das Buch ernster und auch politischer.

Safranskis zentrale These lässt sich einfach zusammenfassen:

Die Romantik setzt die Religion mit den Mitteln der Kunst fort. Sie sucht das Unendliche, das Außergewöhnliche, das Wunderbare. In der Literatur, in der Musik, im privaten Leben ist das eine große Bereicherung. In der Politik wird es gefährlich. Politik braucht Kompromisse, Vernunft, Langeweile. Wer in der Politik das Außergewöhnliche sucht, findet oft das Katastrophale. Safranski plädiert deshalb dafür, in zwei Welten zu leben: romantisch in der Kunst, nüchtern in der Politik, und beides sollte man nicht verwechseln.

Was überzeugt, was nicht

Überzeugend ist vor allem die Sprache. Safranski schreibt elegant und klar, ohne akademischen Jargon. Er setzt kein Fachwissen voraus, nur Neugier. Wer Deutsch auf hohem Niveau liest, findet hier ein Modell für gute Sachprosa: lange Gedanken in verständlichen und eher knappen Sätzen.

Der zweite Teil ist meines Erachtens etwas zu breit.

Die Linie von der Romantik bis zum Nationalsozialismus wirkt eher suggestiv als bewiesen. Auch bleibt das Buch sehr deutsch. Der Umschlag verspricht „europäische Folgen“, aber die englische und die französische Romantik, also Wordsworth, Byron oder Victor Hugo, kommen kaum vor. Der Untertitel „Eine deutsche Affäre“ ist also ehrlich gemeint weil Schwerpunkt.

Warum diese Bücher für Deutschlernende?

Wer im Beruf mit Deutschen arbeitet, begegnet manchmal Dingen, die schwer zu erklären sind. Die Liebe zum Wald. Das Wandern. Das Wort „Sehnsucht“, das in keine Sprache richtig passt.

Kann sich sehnen zu einer Sucht werden?

Die Skepsis gegenüber allem, was zu glatt und zu effizient wirkt. Vieles davon hat Wurzeln in der Romantik. Safranskis Buch erklärt nicht „die Deutschen“, das wäre zu einfach. Aber es zeigt, woher bestimmte Gefühle und Denkfiguren kommen. Das ist für interkulturelle Kommunikation mehr wert als jede Liste von Benimmregeln.

Wer in Australien, Asien oder Amerika lebt, kann dazu eine Karte schreiben: „Romantik – was sonst bei dem Sauwetter? Hier scheint die Sonne. Lies es trotzdem.“

Wortschatz zum Mitnehmen

• das Sauwetter: sehr schlechtes Wetter (umgangssprachlich)
• die Jahresgabe: ein Geschenk des Verlags, einmal im Jahr
• antiquarisch: gebraucht, aus zweiter Hand (bei Büchern)
• die Geisteshaltung: eine Art zu denken und zu fühlen
• die Epoche: ein Zeitabschnitt in Geschichte oder Kunst
• die Sehnsucht: starkes Verlangen nach etwas Fernem oder Unerreichbarem
• romantisieren: etwas schöner oder geheimnisvoller darstellen, als es ist
• suggestiv: so formuliert, dass es eine Meinung nahelegt, ohne sie zu beweisen
• nüchtern: sachlich, ohne Gefühlsüberschwang
• der Appetithappen: ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf mehr

I’ve been a little quiet on the blog today. Not because nothing’s happening. Quite the opposite, actually. Behind the scenes at In My Mom Era, there are books stacked up, conversations with some fascinating people in the works, travel destinations calling my name, and products being put through the ultimate test: life with the Geggs. 🤣

And since I can’t share every finished story just yet, I thought I’d give you a little peek at what’s coming!

📚 Between the Pages: Books, Authors & Questions

If you’ve spent more than five minutes around here, you know I love books. I also love asking questions. Put those two things together, and you get one of my favorite parts of IMME: reading books and getting the chance to talk with the people who wrote them.

I’ve been working through review copies and lining up written Q&As with authors. Some conversations are already underway; others will happen once I’ve finished reading (because I want to ask questions that actually come from the book!).

Among the stories on my desk are Green Glitter Girl, The Tireless Advocate, and Love & Murder—plus more titles that somehow keep finding their way onto my reading list. Seriously. It’s a problem. A wonderful, wonderful problem. 😅

I’m also hoping to bring you conversations with experts about things that matter in our house, including childhood literacy. Even though I’m an avid reader, helping my own elementary-aged boys enjoy reading has been harder than I expected. If that’s familiar, you’re definitely not alone.

🚗 Places We’re Dreaming About (and Reaching Out To!)

You know how some people collect stamps or coffee mugs? I collect places I want to go. And sometimes, I send an email to see whether we can turn one of those places into an IMME story.

Lately, I’ve reached out about Lake George RV Park in New York, where an Adirondack family adventure sounds pretty spectacular, and OCVIBE in Anaheim, California, an entertainment and dining district with its first phase planned for 2027.

Nothing about those potential collaborations is confirmed. These are introductions and conversations I’m hoping to build on. But here’s the thing: even if a hosted opportunity never happens, they’re still places I’d love for our family to experience.

Five kids. A road trip. A whole lot of snacks. What could possibly go wrong? 🤣

🧪 GEGG Tested: The Good, the Messy & the Kid-Approved

Then there’s the other side of life around here: the products we’re trying out and the things we’re considering testing next.

We’ve already been putting Crispy Green’s Crispy Fruit snacks through some very serious testing. By “serious,” I mean the little kids have been eating them faster than I can take pictures. One minute I have a product to photograph; the next minute someone is announcing that the bag is empty and we need more. 🤦‍♀️🤣

There are also more books, family-friendly finds, and possible product features in the pipeline. Some items have arrived, some are still being discussed, and others are just ideas at this point. As always, I’ll tell you what we’ve actually tried, what we liked, and what didn’t work for our family.

🌳 Family Trees, Rabbit Holes & Approximately 19,000 Relatives

My Ancestry family tree is closing in on 19,000 people. NINETEEN THOUSAND. At this point, I’m not growing a family tree. I’m cultivating a national forest. 🤣

One minute I’m looking up a great-great-grandparent, and the next I’m chasing a marriage record from 200 years ago, wondering why someone moved halfway across the country. There are more genealogy rabbit holes coming, because apparently keeping track of my five children wasn’t enough.

🐾 Dogs, Cats & Two Boys With Very Important Jobs

Here’s something that has my whole heart: we’re discussing having Declan and Tristan help local shelter animals, potentially photographing adoptable dogs and cats and reading aloud to them.

The dogs get a story. The cats get an audience to ignore. The boys get reading practice without a pop quiz. Everybody wins. 🤣 We’re still sorting out the details, but I’d love to help some furry faces find their people. The only risk is me wanting to bring all of them home. Tyler, this is journalism, not a promise. ❤️

🎙️ Three Best Friends. Three States. Possibly One Very Unhinged Podcast.

Because apparently I looked at all my existing projects and thought, you know what I need? Another one! My best friends Trinna and Deana and I have been talking about starting a podcast.

Three women. Three states. Years of friendship. Absolutely no shortage of opinions, laughter, or ridiculous stories. Between motherhood, books, bizarre headlines, and the fascinating pitches that land in my IMME inbox, we could probably fill an entire episode just arguing about what the first episode should be about. 😅

It’s an idea we’re exploring, not a launch announcement. But the thought of sitting down with two of my favorite people and seeing where the conversation goes? That’s a kind of chaos I can get behind. 💗

More reading. More questions. More adventures. More ancestors. More paws. Possibly microphones. And, naturally, more real-life chaos.

Some of these stories will show up soon, and some will take a little longer. That’s the fun of building In My Mom Era: getting to follow the interesting things wherever they lead, and bringing you along for the ride.

Dennis talks with psychologist Richard Beck about his latest book, The Book of Love. Richard is a professor of psychology at Abilene Christian University and a Senior Fellow of the Saunders Center for Joy and Human Flourishing. The book weaves Richard’s own faith journey together with the Hebrew Scriptures, the Gospels, and the early church. The conversation asks what it looks like to read Scripture through the lens of love, and why that is so hard when anxiety about “getting it wrong” sits underneath so many biblical arguments. Richard writes for both conservatives and progressives, so listeners on either side will probably hear something they like and something they don’t.

In This Episode:

• Grace for bad readers of Scripture (14:46). We expect to reach heaven as sinners, so why would God be graceless toward our biblical misinterpretations? Dennis and Richard discuss extending grace to those who read differently, on both sides.
• The cross as a theophany of love (18:50). Richard argues against penal substitutionary atonement while pushing back on a progressive view that skips over the cross. The cross, he says, delivers two messages at once, judgment on human sin and love from the foundation of the world, and the parable of the prodigal son holds both.
• Prophetic self-criticism (30:32). Israel put its own worst failures into Scripture. Richard says that courage is stunning, and wonders where we have lost it, since most prophetic speech is aimed at God’s own people.
• Acts 10 and Acts 15 (34:59). Richard connects Peter’s vision and the Jerusalem council to his first book, Unclean, and to the psychology of purity and disgust. He draws on the Wesleyan quadrilateral to show how experience can shape how we read, noting that at the council “the stories won that day.”
• Fruits of the Spirit as coordinates (49:18). Discernment about where God is at work is not vague, Richard says, and it cuts both ways. He points to Paul’s call to let judgment begin with the house of God and says, “You are the one being evaluated here. Stop evaluating other people.”
• The current moment (53:45). Richard offers a critique for each side of the political aisle. For the Christian right, he points to divine solidarity with the oppressed, the teachings of Jesus, and pluralism as a sign of the kingdom. For the progressive side, he points to the risks of reducing Scripture to social justice and the need for forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope.

Stop Starting Over. Start Being Consistent.

Stop starting over. Stop making excuses. Start becoming the person you know you’re capable of being.

As I drive through the mountains of West Virginia, watching the leaves change colors, I’m reminded that life has seasons too. Some seasons are filled with growth, happiness, and success. Others bring challenges, setbacks, and uncertainty.

But here’s the question: Are you allowing your circumstances to control your actions, or are you staying committed to the habits that will change your life?

Far too often, we start working toward something, see a little progress, and take our foot off the gas. Then we wonder why we’re not getting the results we want.

I’ve been guilty of this myself.
