Big issue remains as 2027 Audi Q4 e-tron gets faster and cheaper to be more competitive against Mercedes-Benz EQA and BMW iX1

Audi has confirmed that it is working on cheaper and faster versions of its recently facelifted 2026 Audi Q4 e-tron, with new additions primed to arrive on sale within 12 months.According to Audi product planner Herman Verbeek, speaking to Carsguide, the upgraded all-electric compact SUV will be continually improved from its introduction in Australia late this year as part of plans to extend the model's lifespan into 2030.Originally, the Q4 e-tron was supposed to have been replaced around 2028 by an all-new model that will sit on the Volkswagen Group's Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which has now been pushed back until early 2030 over software challenges within VW's in-house Cariad division.Verbeek said the first model to arrive is likely to be a more powerful version of the Q4 e-tron that has been designed to sit above the current 250kW quattro performance. The product boss didn't disclose how much power the flagship Q4 would produce, but said that the new model wouldn't be badged either an S Q4 e-tron or RS Q4 e-tron, as neither model would offer the "agility or driving dynamics worthy of an Audi Sport model".The extra power will come from existing hardware, with the newly released APP 350 (up to 170kW) and existing APP 550 motor (210kW) will both be wound up to produce more power, while the front-mounted asynchronous electric motor (ASM) will have total output boosted from 80kW to more than 110kW.More good news for those on the hunt for a more affordable take on the Q4 e-tron, Verbeek said his team were working on two new batteries that would replace the current car's nickel-manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, with today's entry 59kWh power pack set to be superseded by a new lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery that will be shared with the new inbound A2 e-tron crossover that will be released later this year. The cheaper LFP battery, which is expected to bring a 30 per cent cost saving over NMC cells, was originally destined to arrive earlier in the Q4 but was pushed back as Audi waited for the more energy-dense chemistry being developed by the VW Group's partner. The reason for the delay was that Audi was keen for the entry Q4 e-tron to weigh less than 2000kg, as some European underground car parks have strict weight limits that forbid any cars heavier than two tonnes from entering. The same weight limit is also applied to automated stackers, car lifts, ramps and car turntables.Verbeek did not confirm when the new batteries would arrive, but the senior Audi boss did rule out upgrading the current car's 400-volt electrics to 800-volts over the huge cost."We can't do it, we'd need to change everything, the battery, motors, inverters, control units, even the air conditioner condenser."The Q4 e-tron's MEB platform means current charging rates are limited at between 160-185kW, a long way off the 320kW the latest similarly-sized all-electric Mercedes GLA will be capable of, with the Audi taking around 27 minutes for a 10 to 80 per cent top-up, around 5 minutes slower than rivals with the more powerful electrics.

How much it costs to charge your electric car at home versus at public charger: new data shows how much you should pay for your 2027 Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X

The truth of EV home charging costs has just been revealed.Charging is one of the biggest talking points around electric cars, but it promises to be much cheaper than filling up with petrol or diesel.Charging an electric car adopts a different approach to filling up one powered by fuel. The optimal way to charge an EV up is to top up the battery every night during off-peak hours. This is cheaper, helps maintain battery life — as constant fast-charging can degrade the battery over time — and reduces the time shock when needed to totally recharge. This contrasts brimming the fuel tank.Home charging is becoming an important pillar of EV infrastructure in Australia because of the challenges of public charging.Privately topping up the battery of your EV in off peak time can be a much more affordable and practical way of charging. @carsguide.com.au If you had solar, it’s basically free 👀: here’s how much it costs to charge EVs in 2026. #costofliving #evs #charging #electriccars #cartok ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au Most people won’t use the majority of their car’s charge each day, so EV owners can charge their cars up by 20-30 per cent overnight and be ready to go the next day.Compare the Market has collated the costs of home charging for EVs at 20kWh (about 25-35 per cent of the average EV battery) per day using different electricity providers (see table below). Private charging at 20kWh is substantially cheaper than charging via a public charger during peak times. EV charging plans have also increased in popularity to provide more structure and potentially lower costs. The cheapest EV plan can cost owners as little as 90 cents a day to top up if used correctly. That equals $328 a year. Even the most expensive only cost $6.56 a day, or $1707 a year. That equals the cost of three litres of premium unleaded or less a day. There are many different factors contributing to how much an EV costs to charge up.The time and place you choose to charge, as well as how much you want to recharge, all have a dramatic effect on how much you pay. There is not a single bowser for charging, rather many different charging types available that let electricity flow at differing rates. Public chargers often boast the fastest rates of charging, but are also the most expensive. The same 20kWh refill on a public charger would cost upwards of $9 a day, or $3200-plus a year. These chargers can charge at rates from 50kW up to 350kW, but it is also dependent on the car’s platform as to how fast it can charge. The number of cars taking power from a specific charger also impacts the usefulness of public charging. If there are two cars using a 150kW charge point, then the power will be split 75kW each, slowing down charging times. The availability of public chargers is also an issue with increasing numbers of EVs being spread across a scarce number of charges. Charging infrastructure remains a key challenge to the successful uptake of EVs in Australia. These factors also make it challenging to accurately determine the costs of charging in comparison with a fuel-powered vehicle. Private charging costs at off-peak times May 2026**Source: Compare the MarketPublic charging costs at peak time 2026

It may have only been on sale in Australia for eight months but the BYD Atto 2 is already lining up for a mild facelift in parallel with comprehensive mechanical upgrade that will see the small, pure-electric SUV switch from front- to rear-wheel driveAn overnight report from CarNewsChina has revealed partially-camouflaged pre-production examples spotted in China, with the biggest external clue to the powertrain change being inclusion of a new rear-mounted charge port.According to the report, Chinese domestic market Atto 2s (badged Yuan UP) will now be powered by 100kW and 120kW motors, down from the 130kW currently produced by Australian versions of the popular crossover. But higher outputs for export are likely, as per other BYD models.Chinese government filings show the car’s wheelbase has grown by 150mm (to 2770mm) with a significant increase in overall length (+355mm to 4665mm) and width (+65mm to 1895mm). Height is unchanged at 1675mm.And while the McPherson strut front suspension set-up remains, the rear switches from semi-independent torsion beam to a full multi-link arrangement.Externally, the car’s front bumper loses its coloured lower lip but a significant addition is a Lidar unit in the lower grille, expected to be offered as an option on the new version.BYD’s ‘DiPilot 300’ system is already available on the Dolphin and Seagull (Atto 1 in Australia) in China. But BYD’s game-changing ‘Flash Charge’ technology appears to be missing in action with Chinese versions of the updated Atto 2 to retain a conventional 400V platform, offering a choice of 42kWh and 52kWh first-generation ‘Blade’ LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery packs for claimed ranges of 410 and 505 km (CLTC), respectively.Aussie Atto 2s currently feature the larger LFP battery with a maximum DC charging rate of 82kW for a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 38 minutes. Flash charging enables a recharge at up to 1500kW, taking a compatible battery from zero to 97 per cent capacity in just nine minutes’ although it’s worth noting the most powerful chargers currently in Australia are 400kW. CarsGuide has contacted BYD Australia for comment on the updated Atto 2’s development and potential arrival in the local market.

The new Mitsubishi Pajero is coming in hot, with its Australian launch closing in.Details of the Japanese brand’s rough-and-tumble four-wheel drive are starting to surface ahead of the vehicle’s launch before the end of the year.Australia has already been confirmed as one of the first markets in the world to get the new Pajero, but now it has been revealed there will be four Pajeroes to choose from.Government homologation documents, which confirm a vehicle is approved for sale and often appear several months before models land in dealerships, show the Pajero will be available in GLX, GLS, Exceed and GSR trims. This will give the fifth-generation Pajero the firepower to take on the Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol.Mitsubishi is keeping information close to its chest, with all other details usually found in the approval documents missing. If we look at Mitsubishi's other models we can get an idea of what each grade may represent. The GLX and GLS will be workman like off-roaders, focusing on capability with less of the showy pampering of higher-end variants.Exceed versions will likely be the most luxe of the bunch with premium finishes throughout. The GSR should be the toughest looking, with the latter potentially mirroring the Triton GSR with blacked-out styling and even increased 4WD capabilities.Mitsubishi hasn’t revealed what the Pajero will look like, but it has been spotted testing in Australia wearing beefy, blocky styling similar to the incoming Nissan Patrol. We do know it will be based on the current Mitsubishi Triton ute, which means it will use a rugged ladder frame that is also found underneath the LandCruiser and Patrol 4WDs.More recent Pajero generations have used a unibody structure, which is used in SUVs and passenger cars. This means it is often not as sturdy off-road, but is lighter, more fuel efficient and composed on the road than conventional ladder-framed 4WDs.Technical details haven’t been revealed, but it is odds on to use the same set-up as the Triton. This means a 2.4-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine, which makes 150kW and 470Nm. This is matched to a six-speed auto driving all four wheels. All or several grades are likely to be fitted with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II tech, which brings selectable drive modes for different road surfaces and active yaw control. A rear differential lock is near certainty, too.Mitsubishi is also planning a range of Pajero models. There is no official word on what they might be yet, but speculation out of Japan points to a mini Pajero and possibly a shortened three-door version. Those models likely won't be seen in public until next decade.

China is now taking aim at the world's affordable performance icons, with a cut-price hot hatch looming that could tempt buyers from a Hyundai i30 N or Ioniq 5 N and a VW Golf GTI or R.The model in question is the Leapmotor B05 Ultra, which has been revealed in China as an all-electric hot hatch producing 180kW and 320Nm, and sprinting to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds. That is just the beginning, with the Chinese hot hatch to be handed over to Stellantis' (and specifically Alfa Romeo's) chassis engineers to deliver a European-class hot hatch that could be a true bang-for-bucks bargain. That's the word from Leapmotor's Head of Commercial Operations in Europe, Danilo Annese, who says the "sky is the limit" for the Ultra."It is not sure that it will be exactly the one you see in China. In the sense that it is Ultra and it should be Ultra," says Annese."We are discussing that (Europe's Ultra) is not that car. It is not the Chinese car, (that) is a body kit. And we want to do it a little bit better than that. But the sky is the limit. Let's see what we can do.""We are working on the other things now to see what we can have as a package."It is understood that the changes aren't just limited to chassis tuning, but could also include bespoke hardware, and a further power boost."Those are the discussions," Annese says. The export-ready B05 Ultra will be ready in the first half of 2027, with the softer variant - named simply the B05 - launching in Australia at the end of the year.Pricing promises to be sharp, too, with the first B05 launching at around $35,000 in our market.

Fifty years ago, on July 1, 1976, the worst new Holden up to that point was released, the HX series. And everything changed. Not coincidentally, it was also the date that all new internal combustion engine vehicles except those under 850cc in capacity or with liquid petroleum gas had to comply with stricter emissions standards known as Australian Design Rule 27A (ADR27A).This law proved to be a nightmare for parent company General Motors-Holden’s (GMH) Ltd.With fuel consumption up, power down and prices jumping to cover the extra technology necessary to meet the new regulations over the preceding HJ series, Holden’s engineers struggled to make its 1960s-era engines cope with the required updates in what was the country’s best-selling car line since the early 1950s.Critics and road testers alike savaged the HX as a result, accusing Holden of being cynical and out of touch, though it managed to hang on to the top spot for 1976.“Perhaps we would be better off with dirty engines and improved driveability,” quipped Wheels magazine editor Peter Robinson.Unfortunately for GMH, three unexpected things also happened right around that time that led to fundamental shifts in consumer tastes.Firstly, Japan was ready to launch its next phase of world-beating passenger cars that could easily meet ADR27A, headed by the original Honda Accord that almost single-handedly elevated that country’s entire industry overnight.Others followed in its footsteps, including the Mazda 323 and Datsun Skyline.Yet it was the shock success of the Chrysler Sigma, supplied by Mitsubishi, that became GMH's second big setback, shooting up the charts to a podium finish soon after its 1977 launch, and stayed there for half a decade. The Sigma lured many former and would-be Holden owners away in droves, particularly from the brand's waning Torana and Sunbird models it competed directly against, and even cannibalised Chrysler’s own Valiant in the process. Sigma was an automotive phenomenon that led directly to the iconic Australian-developed Magna later on.And last but not least, arch-rival Ford, which had been nipping at the Holden’s heels with the Falcon since the XB Falcon snatched number one for just one month in late 1973, had pulled out all stops in making the succeeding XC series demonstrably superior. GMH certainly wasn't expecting that. While the change from HJ to HX was little more than a fussier grille, revised instrumentation and several other, mostly minor, alterations, Ford expensively reengineered its engines to make them better than before, not worse. And it also redesigned the Falcon's nose, tail, back doors and dashboard, for a far-fresher look and feel.Plus, the XC launched the Fairmont GXL sports/luxury flagship. In the spirit of the legendary Falcon GTs, contemporary reviewers declared it as one of the greatest Australian-made family cars to date.In stark contrast to the basting the HX endured, XC sales flourished, with the Falcon becoming Australia’s best-selling car in 1977, period – an achievement it managed again from 1981 through to 1989, signalling the start of Ford Australia’s halcyon days.Half a century after the HX’s painful birth, perspective shows us a company grappling to deal fast enough with rapid change – something that Holden would pay the ultimate price for by 2020.Yet, to GMH’s credit, the more-comprehensively changed HZ series that followed in October, 1977, addressed most of the HX’s issues, whilst leap-frogging the Falcon in both sales as well as a driver’s car, thanks to chassis tweaks marketed to great effect using a tagline borrowed from Pontiac in the US called Radial Tuned Suspension.A stunning turnaround, it restored the Holden to the top spot for 1978, in time for the smaller, Opel-based VB Commodore to turn the market on its ear leading into the 1980s.A brief hiccup then largely due to ADR27A, a total of 110,669 HXs were built.

BYD’s latest model is on the cusp of landing in Australia, and it could be one of the brand’s cheapest models sold to date. A plug-in hybrid variant BYD Atto 2 small SUV has been approved for Australian sale, joining the fully-electric model already available. There is no official news on price, but we can expect it to sit under the $31,990 (before on-road costs) starting price of the cheapest electric version. This would make it the cheapest plug-in hybrid in Australia, beating the BYD Sealion 5 and Chery Tiggo 7 SHS.The fully-electric Atto 2 continues to be one of the best-selling EVs in Australia since it launched late last year. This latest move will see the Atto 2 move into competition with some of the big players of the small SUV segment. Segment leaders, the Chery Tiggo 4 and Hyundai Kona adopt petrol and plug-less hybrid set-ups, giving this new Atto 2 a point of difference. It is similarly sized to those rivals, but has potential to be offered at a cheaper price point. The Atto 2 PHEV was spotted undergoing in Sydney in late May as it edges closer to showrooms. The car will be available with a choice of two 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor set-ups, producing 122kW or 156kW.This means the base Atto 2 EV boasts more power than its PHEV sibling (130kW), with the top-grade PHEV becoming the most powerful Atto 2 in the range.BYD Australia is yet to officially confirm the Atto 2 PHEV’s arrival Down Under, but it is rare for a car to be approved for sale, then fail to make it into showrooms. There are scarce other details on the car at this stage, with more information likely to be revealed closer to the car’s impending launch. In the United Kingdom, the Atto 2 PHEV has a total driving range of nearly 1000km, with an electric-only range of 89km from its 18kWh battery. Its interior features a 12.8-inch central touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital driver display. We can expect more official details on the Australian Atto 2 PHEV towards the end of this year.

Toyota appears to have given us a peek behind the curtain at just how it would plug-in power its hybrid HiLux workhorse, with reports firming that the new mini HiLux will debut PHEV tech in the brand's ute space.Reportedly codenamed Project 150D, and designed to take on everything from the BYD Mako or Shark 5 to the Ford Maverick, the monocoque ute will reportedly adopt a version of the plug-in hybrid system from the brand's Prius. That would pair a 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors for a total system output of 166kW, while the e-CVT is joined by a second electric motor to enable eFour all-wheel drive.Toyota is reportedly targeting the first half of 2027 for the launch of the mini HiLux.Toyota opening the door to its passenger range for its commercial plug-in options gives the brand some interesting choices for the long-expected plug-in hybrid HiLux, chief among them being the powertrain from the new RAV4 PHEV GR Sport. That model develops a total 227kW, with a 2.5-litre petrol engine joined by two electric motors, which also delivers AWD grip.Toyota has previously confirmed work is underway on PHEV technology that would suit the user case of HiLux, with the brand's former VP of Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley saying "you'd never rule it out" when asked at the unveiling of the 2026 range.“Battery technology evolves, and it's evolving quickly. If we can get to a situation where a PHEV has the capability of doing 200-plus kilometres on BEV alone — so in other words, if I've got a HiLux I can just go around town, I can run that on BEV and be carbon-neutral pretty well, providing I'm using renewable energy to do it," Mr Hanley has also previously told CarsGuide.“Now the issue is of course can it tow? Can it take a heavy load? Well, to be able to flick a switch and say, well, for those moments where I'm going out off-road or for those moments where I need to tow a heavy load, I've got the convenience of going to a normal hybrid engine and I can get 500 or 600 kilometres and it's convenient, then I see a role for PHEV in that space.“I think that's some years away, to be honest, that battery technology. But when it comes, PHEVs will have a renewed engagement with the market because they'll go from what I call the ultimate inconvenience to the ultimate convenience.”

The new 2027 Mazda CX-5 almost never happened, as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Kia Sportage rival was almost sunk by friendly fire

The latest CX-5 may never have happened.Mazda has confirmed that the CX-60 was originally planned to replace, rather than support, the company’s best-selling medium-sized SUV as we know it, as part of the brand’s global move upmarket that resulted in a wide range of larger and more-expensive alternatives stretching up to the CX-90 flagship. The disappointing critical reception and subsequent disappointing global sales performance of the CX-60 since its March, 2022 world premiere, appear to have prompted a pivot back to CX-5 development soon after, resulting in today’s third-generation KM-series model.“I like to admit the fact that we had a variety of discussions on this model,” according to Mazda Motor Corporation CX-5 Program Manager, Koichiro Yamaguchi, speaking via an interpreter.“There was an idea to replace (CX-5) with the CX-60 as the new generation (CX-5), and there were also some opinions about continuing the CX-5 model. But the conclusion was very simple, because the current CX-5 just kept setting well among our customers.“So, after we came to this conclusion, we just had to develop this new-generation CX-5 model that fits our customers’ needs and wants. And that’s how we planned and engineered this vehicle.”The Australian sales data would certainly support the decision to evolve the CX-5 series.Volumes for the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 are all down compared to the same time last year, by 1.4 per cent, 28 per cent, 30 per cent and 12.5 per cent respectively. In the CX-60’s case, this is despite the advent of a round of suspension improvements last year, designed to address criticisms over ride quality, as well as an entry-level four-cylinder petrol rear-drive Pure grade starting from $44,740 that’s within $5000 of the CX-5 base equivalent.Furthermore, Yamaguchi also disclosed that KM CX-5 development took just three years, which puts it commencing sometime after the CX-60’s global debut in early 2022.“It began three years ago,” he revealed. Not only does the latest CX-5’s late gestation explain the unusually long lifecycle of the outgoing KF series that launched in Australia in early 2017 (nearly doubling the original KE’s five-year time frame), it also explains the delay in getting the vital hybrid models to market, as they are not due to arrive here until 2028.And that's not even considering the naming convention that makes the KM an outlier with no easy fit between the US-market CX-50 and CX-60.Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi believes that global demand deemed it essential that the series continue and evolve, even in unison with the larger SUVs in the brand’s line-up.“The market voice from Australia and many other regions is that CX 5 is a core product, and a core value proposition for the customer, and that must be honoured,” he added.“And this is going back many years, before the CX-60 was even launched.”While walking away from Mazda’s premium aspirations, Bhindi is adamant the multi-SUV approach was always part of the company’s strategy.“There was a reason for (the CX-5 to stay on sale), because we also wanted what the large-platform (CX-60 and CX-70 two-row SUVs and CX-80 and CX-90 three-row SUVs) offer for Australia, but also globally,” he said.“And to do that, the CX-5 had to extend a little bit longer. So, we've got both the things that was on our wish list: to have a CX 5 ongoing, and the large platform (SUVs) that provide that step up from CX-5.“Because, in the previous line-up, after CX 5, where does the customer go?They would only have the (now-discontinued) CX-8 and CX-9. But they are three-row SUVs, and not everybody needs a three-row car.“What we have now is a CX-60 and a CX-70, if you want two-row cars and performance and different dynamics.”

Diesel dual-cab utes are in decline, but there could be a saviour from an unlikely source. The Chery Stockman is coming this year packing a diesel hybrid set-up, which some of the biggest names in the business haven’t been able to develop.GWM is also developing diesel-electric technology to fit to its range of utes and 4WDs.Chery’s will arrive first and it will determine whether the tech is a winner or an also-ran, and it could decide the fate of diesel dual-cabs as we know it.Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) is starting to bite, with carmakers that sell too many high CO2-emitting vehicles to be slugged with fines. These fines in most cases will be passed onto consumers, which means high-polluting vehices — such as utes — could become more expensive. The threshold for CO2 gets lower every year until 2030, which means the fines will keep rising until utes — in their current form — are prohibitively expensive. @carsguide.com.au Mean looking new ute confirmed for Oz with a surprise feature! #Chery #KP31 #ute #cartok #fyp ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au
However, carmakers can offset the fines by selling a large number of electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. That’s bad news for brands like Ford, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubsihi and Toyota that only have small electric vehicle sales or none at all.Chery and GWM could now be throwing the industry a lifeline. @carsguide.com.au The 2027 Chery Stockman is locked in for Australia!! This name was voted by Australians and beat out Longreach, Mate and Orca, among others. When it launches later this year, it will be the first diesel plug-in hybrid ute @Jack Quick #chery #stockman #ute #cartok #fyp ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au The Chery Stockman will use a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine paired with an electric motor or two and a sizeable battery.Details are scarce, but its torque outputs will be mega. The high torque figures delivered by the combination of diesel and electric power — two fuel sources that create a lot of torque — is one of the benefits of this new set-up compared to more conventional petrol-electric plug-in hybrids, according to Chery’s Executive Director of Engineering Peter Matkin.BYD, Ford and GWM already have petrol plug-in hybrids on sale, and Toyota is believed to be preparing one, too.Matkin suggested carmakers had shied away from the diesel hybrids in favour of petrol plug-ins as the latter was easier to engineer.Petrol plug-in hybrids lack the grunt and capabilities dished out by diesel dual-cabs.Both the Shark 6 and Ranger Hybrid have weak points. The Shark 6 can’t tow or carry enough and isn’t as surefooted off-road, while the Ranger can do this but it sacrifices electric driving range in the process. Neither add up to an ideal hybrid dual-cab.This is where the diesel hybrids come in, according to Chery Australia’s Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris.“I believe Chery has one chance to prove that we can build and deliver a highly capable ute,” said Harris.“And so to do that, it needs towing capability, payload capability, all-terrain capability. Particularly all-terrain capability, you know, you get people towing caravans on the beach. You really do need the torque and power delivery that a diesel gives you down low to be able to do those things.”Chery said the new ute will be able to tow 3500kg and handle a one-tonne payload. It will have front, centre and rear diff locks, and it should have low gearing for proper off-roading.If this new breed of diesel hybrids don’t change the game and attract a meaningful amount of buyers, then the writing is on the wall for diesel dual-cabs… petrol hybrids have won.

Tesla has rolled out a key update for its Full Self-Driving Supervised technology, with version 14 (or v14.3.3) addressing the key flaws in the system’s earlier iterations and creating a near-flawless self-driving experience.Described by Elon Musk as “a banger”, the new version began rolling out on eligible Tesla vehicles in Australia on June 19, and now CarsGuide has taken the wheel (or not taken the wheel) to test the upgraded tech on Australian roads. But first, what’s new? Truthfully, a lot of stuff that’s difficult to understand. The neural vision encoder has been upgraded, for example, while the AI compiler has been rewritten with MLIR. But it’s less what's been done, and more why it has been done, with Tesla's intention to make self-driving technology feel more natural, and more decisive, while adding new features.Tesla says reaction time is now 20 per cent faster, and lane biasing and tailgating have been mitigated. There’s also faster response times for emergency situations, like oncoming traffic, the sudden appearance of emergency vehicles and the unexpected arrival of what the brand describes as “small animals” in the Tesla’s path. The driver monitoring system has also been sharpened, making it less keen to chirp the driver for not paying attention, while the system has been trained to push through "temporary system degradations" without asking the driver to take over. It's about reducing driver interventions, Tesla says, and to that end the brand has also included a kilometre counter that tracks how long self-driving was in use without the driver having to do anything. The biggest (and most noticeable from the driver’s seat) change is the way Tesla’s FSDS now operates, with the ‘driving’ modes expanded to include Sloth, Chill, Standard and Hurry. While only Sloth (which “comes with lower speeds and more conservative lane selection”) and Chill are new, all have been programmed to offer a more noticeable difference in driving behaviour. Hurry, for example, reacts like a harried human driver, overtaking slower-moving cars and darting into traffic gaps.“Driver profile now has a stronger impact on behaviour,” Tesla says. “The more assertive the profile, the higher the max speed.”Also new is the ability to choose how your trip will end, with your Tesla now able to pull into your driveway, or park at the front of your house. Alternatively, you can choose a carpark or indoor carpark. If that’s the on-paper changes, the real-world result is nothing short of staggering. One of my biggest complaints with self-driving technology is that it takes longer to get somewhere than if you drove yourself – especially in a busy city, where lane selection and gap seizing is absolutely crucial. But Tesla FSDS V14 pretty comprehensively addresses those concerns. My first journey was a 33km trek from the edge of Sydney’s Northern Beaches to the city’s inner west, on a rain-soaked afternoon on the edge of School Zone chaos, and at no point was I forced to intervene.Twice with an exit approaching in less than 800m, my Tesla Model 3 left its lane to overtake a vehicle travelling just under the speed limit ahead of me, cutting back into the correct lane in time to take the exit. In previous iterations, I’ve found the technology’s patience is a lot more forgiving than my own, but that was not the case this time, with the Tesla also quick to change into a faster-moving lane when it spotted an opening, too. @carsguide.com.au Updated Tesla Full Self-Driving Supervised version 14 tested on Sydney streets! We get behind the wheel of a 2026 Tesla Model 3 electric car to sample the improvements Elon Musk’s company has made to its self-driving suite. #Tesla #TeslaFSD #EV #cartok #fyp ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au When I arrived home, my Model 3 parked in a space out the front of

Chinese brand Hongqi is launching a large electric SUV in three Southeast Asian nations, potentially opening the door for Australia down the track.Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia are all reportedly set to become markets for the 2026 Hongqi E-HS9, with Malaysia yet to receive the model.Hongqi is best-known as the favoured brand for high-ranking Chinese government officials and leaders, and as such positions itself as a luxury brand.Malaysian automotive outlet PaulTan reports the Thai version of the model launched is dubbed the “E-HS9 Overseas RHD Equipment Definition (Long-endurance Southeast Asian version)”.The top-line specs are a 760km electric driving range under China’s lenient CLTC testing, a large 120kWh battery, a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup with 368kW and 606Nm and a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds. The 5.2-metre-long SUV has a 3110mm wheelbase for plenty of interior space, but its list of features doesn’t read too differently from a mid-spec EV available in Australia.Aside from what appears to be decent legroom in the second row according to the Thai brochure, the E-HS9 features a large sunroof, ambient lighting, leather upholstery, acoustic protection, along with captain’s chairs for passengers in a six-seat layout. The Hongqi E-HS9 has also been available in Northern Europe for some years, but the model has come under fire for falling far short of expectations and promises in Scandinavia.Swedish and Norwegian motoring outlets have slammed the brand for severe depreciation, problems with reliability and cost of maintenance, and its disappointing real-world range and charging speeds.Australia is yet to be even mentioned when it comes to Hongqi’s plans, but the Singapore and Thailand launches certainly open the possibility for our (also right-hand-drive) market in the future.

The Zeekr 7X's smashing start to Australian life has been well-documented, but its smaller X sibling has not had the same attention.A tepid sales response following the small electric SUV’s initial launch in 2024 prompted the branch to slash thousands off the price for its updated model in 2026. It appears this price cut has done the trick for Zeekr, with the brand announcing it has received more than 1200 orders in the car’s first six weeks of being on offer. This contrasts the just 665 units of the previous model being sold across the whole of 2025. The brand ditched the $49,990 (before on-road costs ) price for the rear-wheel drive and $62,990 for the all-wheel drive. The RWD model is now offered from $48,900, drive-away, while AWD pricing starts at $57,900, also drive-away. Cheaper pricing means the X comes in under rivals like the BMW iX1 and Volvo EX30.The X also received a suite of upgrades for its new model. Updates to the RWD battery means it can now DC charge at 230kW, juicing up from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.Power increased by 50kW on both models. The single motor in RWD now produces 250kW and 343Nm, while the dual motors in the AWD produce 365kW and 573Nm. There was also a standard equipment buff for the RWD, including heated front and rear seats, as well as a premium Yamaha surround sound system. The X’s recent success adds to the high-flying 7X that has seen sales skyrocket, making it one of the best-selling EVs in the country. The brand will be eager to avoid the order backlog that occurred when the 7X first landed in Australia. It said orders are expected to be fulfilled swiftly this time around. “For customers considering making the switch, delivery timelines are already proving encouraging, with some orders expected to be fulfilled in as little as two months,” Zeekr Australia Managing Director Frank Li said. The Geely sub-brand will continue its methodical approach to model launches Down Under. The 7GT wagon, as well as the 8X and 9X large SUVs are all expected to launch within the next 18 months.

The striking next-generation of an Australian favourite has just been revealed in its South Korean home market, and it might not be too far away from landing here.Hyundai’s Avante sedan, known as the i30 sedan in Australia, will soon enter its eighth generation with a sharp new design. For now, there is no official news on the new-generation i30’s future Down Under, with the local branch tight-lipped for the time being.Given the Avante is expected to launch in South Korea in the coming months, it is fairly certain it will arrive in Australia as the new i30 in the first half of next year given the current version of the car sold in Australia is also built in South Korea. The current generation is available in Australia with petrol and hybrid options, but it may follow in the footsteps of other recent Hyundai launches in going predominantly hybrid or hybrid-only.Hyundai is facing emissions fines on its internal combustion offerings under the federal government's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES). This coupled with the brand’s growing trend to introduce hybrid options across its line-up could mean it will only offer the hybrid version of the new i30 when it gets here.It would also follow the strategy of its Kia sister brand, which offers the next-generation Kia Seltos small SUV only with a hybrid set-up, despite a petrol model being available elsewhere. The Avante will be available globally with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 111kW and a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor set-up, producing 117kW.The future of the 1.6-litre turbo dual-clutch N-Line model and the full performance 2.0-litre turbo i30 N is yet to be determined. The new-generation sedan will feature a bold and futuristic exterior with a boxy design, along with sharp creases on the body. There is a bar-style front light design, with separate horizontal and vertical strips, giving the car sleek poise. On the inside, there is a larger central touchscreen display and a raised digital driver display. The i30 lineup has undergone a serious overhaul over the past few years Down Under.South Korean production of the hatchback ended in 2023, requiring Hyundai to source it from Europe, but that proved too costly, seeing the model, apart from the high-performance 'N' grade pulled from sale last year. This was despite the hatch proving more popular than the sedan when the pair were on sale together, and one of the most popular hatchbacks on sale in Australia generally. The i30 remains one of Hyundai's better selling models in Australia despite a more than 30 per cent decline in 2026 so far.

JD Power, the US-based industry analytics and consumer research specialist, has released its 2026 Initial Quality Study, a much-anticipated (and often feared) annual report looking at the way cars are built and how they operate. And despite a “sharp rise” in overall vehicle quality, this year’s study has highlighted connectivity as a significant stumbling block for manufacturers and consumers. As its name implies, the Initial Quality Study is based on responses from purchasers and lessees of new vehicles (this year 78,514 people) surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The quality audit is split into eight market segments and covers 10 categories - Multimedia, Features, controls & displays, Exterior, Interior, Driving assistance, Seats, Powertrain, Driving experience, Climate and Unspecified (unclassified gripes). Issues are rated according to Problems Per 100 vehicles (PP100).In 2026, fewer problems were cited across nine of the 10 categories, with Multimedia the exception, where “connectivity issues continue to strain customer experience with new-vehicle quality.”Introducing the report, JD Power Senior Director of Auto Benchmarking Frank Hanley said, “As more technology is introduced into vehicles, keeping the experience simple matters more than ever.“The biggest gains in quality come from features that are easy to use - simple controls, less-intrusive driver assistance and software that works the way customers expect.“When technology becomes too complicated, the likelihood of customers experiencing a problem rises considerably,” he said. The total number of reported problems with new vehicles improved to 175 PP100, down from 192 PP100 in 2025, which JD Power said is the best year-on-year improvement since 1997 and the fourth-best performance in the 40-year history of the survey. But Multimedia saw an increase of 1.4 PP100 in reported problems - typically issues with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity and touchscreen displays - for a total of 44.4 PP100 across mass market segments and 38.3 PP100 in the premium groupings.Porsche was the highest-ranking brand overall with an initial quality score of 138 PP100, ahead of Genesis (151 PP100) and Lexus (156 PP100).Toyota Motor Corporation’s Kyushu 1 plant in Japan, which manufactures the Lexus NX and Lexus UX, received the Platinum Plant Quality Award which is based on detected defects and malfunctions.

Polestar has been banned from selling cars in the USA after the 2027 model year due to the country’s new ‘Connected Vehicle Rule’.The new rules in the US crack down on cars with technology sourced from China, including over-the-air connectivity features, with US regulators citing concerns around the amount of sensitive data being collected on its citizens. It is part of a wider protectionist regulatory push in the US to effectively ban Chinese vehicles to protect its large domestic auto industry.Polestar fell afoul of the new rules despite the Polestar 3 being built inside the US and the Polestar 4 being built in South Korea.Volvo, Polestar's sister brand under the same Geely ownership, was granted a specific exemption to the new rules.Policies like the Connected Vehicle Rule can effectively ban individual models or entire brands from sale in the country, but high tariffs are also wreaking havoc on the financials of both the Hyundai Motor Group and the biggest Japanese brands, including Toyota, Nissan and Honda, which all have partial manufacturing footprints in the US and now need to scramble to localise more parts or models.Polestar issued a statement confirming the US made up only a small portion (six per cent) of its current sales footprint, and that it would re-focus on the European market where it says nearly 80 per cent of its sales volumes are centred. The brand also re-committed to Latin America and Canada as important markets in the future. The company said it would sell the remainder of its Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 stock in the US and then wind up its sales operation, continuing to support existing owners through its service network.Polestar noted it is still committed to its future product line-up, which includes the Europe-built Polestar 7 small SUV (expected to share its underpinnings with the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X) as its next key volume seller. It will also continue to roll-out the Polestar 5 grand tourer and launch a next-generation Polestar 2 in 2027.The future of the Polestar 3 mid-sized performance SUV, which is currently built in the US, is up in the air. The version of the car sold in Australia is still built in China.Polestar’s share price has taken a battering thanks to a range of recent events, which has seen the company’s once global aspirations shrink down to a strategic focus on just a few markets. The brand has closed all of its retail stores in China, where much of its range is built, after selling only a handful of vehicles in 2025. Instead it has shifted to a by-order-only online approach.Despite these developments, the brand reported its highest ever Q1 sales result earlier this year, off the back of stronger sales in Australia, Germany, Sweden, South Korea and the UK.

A hybrid car has just launched in China with a battery bigger than many EVs.The Leapmotor D99’s range-extender set-up boasts a whopping 80kWh battery. This means the people mover offers a pure electric driving range of 480km, according to more generous CLTC standards. This boosts total driving range to 1160km when the battery is fully charged. The D99’s range-extender battery is bigger than what is available on most grades of the fully-electric Tesla Model Y. Its battery is almost three times the size of the standard BYD Atto 1 EV. Don’t expect to see the D99 in Australia anytime soon, with it specifically targeting the hugely competitive Chinese people mover market. It has a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 100kW and 225Nm to charge the battery, while dual electric motors provide 300kW and 525Nm. There is also a fully-electric version of the D99 that has a 115kWh battery that offers 700km of driving range. The D99 is priced in China from 249,000 yuan, which is just over $53,000, with prices rising up to 320,000 yuan or just less than $70,000.Range-extender vehicles and people movers have become increasingly popular in China, finding the sweet spot between an electrified set-up, sufficient driving range and increased practicality. The D99 is a rival to other Chinese competitors like the Denza D9, Xpeng X9 and Zeekr 009 that also boast range-extender set-ups. The Denza D9 and Zeekr’s 009 are already on sale in Australia as EVs, with an electric version of the Xpeng X9 approved for sale as well.Range-extenders remain a rarity in Australia, with Leapmotor’s B10 and C10 SUVs the only major examples. People movers are the latest segment to see an influx of electrified options, but it still remains dominated by the Kia Carnival.

Honda is about to revive one of its iconic models before the end of the decade, and it will get a hybrid twist. The brand has plans to bring back its Element boxy compact SUV as a plug-less hybrid in the second quarter of 2029, according to a report in AutoNews. The Honda Element never made its way to Australia as it was left-hand drive only and exclusive to the North American market. The Element proved hugely popular in its first year on sale in 2003, but its popularity declined before its eventual departure in 2011. Its cute proportions and raised suspension made it a strong option as an affordable lifestyle and outdoor-focused SUV. It also had removable seats and reverse opening rear doors. It was built on a monocoque chassis, meaning it offered strong driving dynamics while still meeting expectations for a lifestyle vehicle.AutoNews further reported demand for these cars has increased again and used examples are selling quickly. This updated Element would likely put forward a similar proposition, lining up as a rival to Subaru's SUVs and ladder frame alternatives in the Ford Bronco and Toyota FJ LandCruiser. If the model gets off the ground, expect an update on the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 120kW that powered the old model. The Element would form part of Honda’s new plan to focus on hybrid vehicles from 2027, with 15 new hybrid models launching globally by 2030.These models will be primarily targeted in North America, but Honda Australia has not ruled out receiving some of these models in the future. Rumours of an Element hybrid come after the brand reportedly began preparations to introduce a hybrid version of its Ridgeline ute - a model the local branch has also shown interest in.

Ram Australia confirms the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX is likely to come here to hunt down the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150

Ram Australia has confirmed it is working hard behind the scenes to return Hemi V8 utes to its showrooms. While the V8 has made a triumphant return in the States, MY26 Ram 1500s in Australia are powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder ‘Hurricane’ engine, albeit more powerful and more torquey than the Hemi it replaces. But even though the new engine has become more popular than the V8 in the big ute’s home market, Ram Australia is aiming to bring the option of a V8 back in the form of a fire-breathing top-spec performance variant - the Ram 1500 TRX SRT.“Earlier this year, Ram Trucks USA confirmed the return of the Ram TRX,” Ram Trucks Australia spokesperson Joshua Dowling said. “We said at the time the reborn TRX is under serious consideration for Australia, and that statement remains true today. “What we can tell you is that the TRX is more likely to come to Australia than not, but we still have a number of engineering gateways to go through, unlike the grey import market.”One of the reasons American utes are so much more expensive than they are in the US is the remanufacturing process, which is also the reason there’s a delay between the model cycle there and here in Australia. The extreme likelihood of the TRX returning to Australia is only dampened slightly by the small potential for an engineering ‘hurdle’ to deem the project too expensive, but it seems almost certain that it’ll happen. In fact, despite the lack of full confirmation the TRX will launch in Australia, Dowling said there are customers who have placed deposits in the event the supercharged V8 ute returns to Oz.Revived by new Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, the new generation of TRX boasts a 6.2-litre supercharged ‘Hemi’ V8 under the bonnet, producing 579kW and 922Nm and making the full-sized ‘truck’ capable of a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.5 seconds. The TRX most recently available in Australia offered up 523kW and 882Nm, by comparison.Order books opened this week in the US for the 2027 TRX SRT, starting from USD$99,995 (A$145,000), so Australians can be expected to pay plenty more once reengineering has taken place. For reference, the last-gen TRX Final Edition (with 523kW and 882Nm) was priced from $249,950 in Australia a year ago.“Our vehicles are made to factory quality standards and, in order to be thorough, that process takes time,” Dowling added.“So we ask our TRX fans, please be patient… and we hope you won't be waiting too long. “We can confirm we are working around the clock with our engineering team in Australia and with engineers in the US to make the return of TRX a reality.”In further promising news for V8 fans, the even more wicked-looking Ram 1500 Rumble Bee SRT is also a chance for Australia.“The recently unveiled Ram 1500 Rumblebee muscle truck is also on our wish list. If it were to come to Australia, it would come after the TRX because of the engineering work required… but if everything goes our way, it won't be far behind.”In its top-end specification, the Rumble Bee SRT has the same supercharged Hemi V8 as the TRX with the same 579kW/922Nm, but a ‘standard’ Rumble Bee with a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 with 295kW/556Nm is also available, as is a Rumble Bee 392 with a 350kW/617Nm 6.4-litre Hemi V8.Ram Australia didn’t indicate which version is at the top of the wishlist.

Chery has officially launched its Q small, pure-electric hatch in Thailand with pricing starting at the equivalent of around $20,400 and an introductory offer of roughly $19,500.Called QQ3 and priced from ¥68,920 (~$14,000) in the Chinese domestic market, the value-focused small EV will be offered across three tiers in Thailand - the entry-grade Qlick referenced above, mid-level Qool (~$21,700) and top-spec Quint (~$22,500).All but confirmed for local sale, the rear-motor, rear-wheel drive city car has regularly been spotted testing in Australia with CarsGuide invited to a preview drive in China only last month. And if Australian pricing is even close to the Thai Q line-up it will throw a ferocious cat amongst the EV pigeons, undercutting the current electric car price leader, BYD’s Atto 1 Essential at $23,990, before-on-road costs. In China, two powertrains are available – one with 58kW/90Nm and another producing 90kW/115Nm, the latter offered in Thailand, the first confirmed export market for the latest iteration of the car.Again, there are two LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery options in China, rated at 29.5kWh and 41.3kWh, respectively, but it’s the bigger pack only for Thailand, with range quoted at 400 km (NEDC).It’s safe to assume Australia would follow the Thai market battery and powertrain template.Measuring just under 4.2m long, a fraction more than 1.8m wide and close to 1.6m tall, the Q is shorter (-95mm) but wider (+41mm) than the BYD Dolphin while riding on an identical 2700mm wheelbase.DC fast charging at 85kW translates to a 30-80 per cent fill in 16.5 minutes with 6.6kW AC charging capability onboard. The car is also V2L (vehicle-to-load) capable.Boot capacity is a useful 375 litres with the rear seat upright and an impressive 1450L with it folded. A front boot adds another 70 litres and there’s a 35-litre compartment tucked under the rear seats. The Q is underpinned by Chery’s ‘T12’ battery-electric platform and rides on a strut front multi-link rear suspension set-up with disc brakes all around (ventilated at the front).Equipment highlights on upper grades for the Thai market include auto LED headlights and LED tail-lights, an 8.9-inch instrument display, 15.6-inch multimedia touchscreen, dual-zone climate-control and wireless device charging as well as an electric front boot lid and tailgate. The flagship Q Quint picks up 17-inch alloy rims, ambient lighting, voice recognition, six-speaker audio, auto-parking, a powered driver’s seat and front proximity sensors.Safety includes up to 10 airbags and a suite of 21 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) functions including AEB, adaptive cruise, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic parking assist.Interestingly, Thai introductory pricing for the Q includes an eight-year/200,000 km warranty (seven-year/unlimited km in Australia), a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty (eight-year/unlimited km in Oz), five years’ 24-hour roadside assistance (up to seven years conditional here), a year’s “free insurance”, an AC portable charger and a carpet set. When contacted for comment on the car’s likelihood for Australian sale a Chery spokesperson told CarsGuide, “There’s a lot of interest around the Chery QQ3, but at this stage it is not confirmed for Australia. @carsguide.com.au 2027 Chery QQ could be Australia’s cheapest EV if it lands here #chery #qq #ev #cartok #fyp ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au “However, a number of international models are currently under consideration for the local market,” they said.Stay tuned.

Shell is one of the world's biggest petrol producers, but now it wants to perfect the electric car battery and best BYD, CATL and others at their own game

One of the world's biggest petrol producers has just figured out a ground-breaking electric car charging solution.Shell produces more than eight million barrels of crude oil a day, but the company is turning the tables with its ‘Triple 10 Challenge’ concept electric car.It is designed to achieve three goals, which are a 10-minute charge time, a driving efficiency of 10kWh per 100km and a lifetime emissions footprint of 10 tonnes.Charging times are one of the main talking points when it comes to an EV future.Brands have been in fierce competition to produce super fast charging cars and infrastructure. Geely sub-brand Zeekr announced back in April it was prepping a system capable of charging from 10-97 per cent in less than nine minutes. Shell’s system focuses on improving the efficiency of how vehicles charge as opposed to pumping more power into the charger. It will use an advanced thermal fluid designed to prevent overheating, which has become the biggest roadblock to fast charging. The transfer of electricity creates friction, and therefore heat, slowing down the charging process. The liquid used by Shell is not electrically conductive meaning it is not susceptible to the high levels of friction faced during charging.Batteries are submerged in this liquid to directly prevent heating up as opposed to conventional cooling mechanisms that only mitigate overheating.BYD and Geely have approached the issue differently by distributing liquid-cooled chargers in China. This new system from Shell could change the charging game by using a less powerful charger and still achieving fast charging times. Many of the ultra fast chargers available boast power of more than 1000kW, but Shell’s system would only need 175kW to achieve similar charging times. Australia will soon receive BYD’s megawatt fast charging in what will be one of the first examples of ultra fast charging Down Under. There is no news on where Shell plans to use this technology, but it could be huge in Australia should it get off the ground, given the country’s challenges with adequate charging infrastructure. Shell’s driving efficiency aim of 10kWh/100km would be a strong performer in the EV world.Improved driving efficiency means EVs can travel longer distances between charges. This could be particularly useful for small cars that do not have the space for big batteries, like Shell's concept car.The similarly-sized BYD Atto 1's 30kWh battery has a driving range of 220km at 15.5kWh/100km, but this would be boosted to 300km at Shell's rate of 10kWh/100km.This would also bring down the size of batteries needed for EVs, reducing the amount of EV waste and strain on expensive recycling initiatives. EVs are often criticised for the environmental costs of acquiring precious metal resources and manufacturing the final product. @carsguide.com.au If you had solar, it’s basically free 👀: here’s how much it costs to charge EVs in 2026. #costofliving #evs #charging #electriccars #cartok ♬ original sound - CarsGuide.com.au Shell’s final goal is to have a total emissions value over the life of its concept car being 10 million tonnes. The company said this is roughly 50 per cent of the lifecycle emissions of comparable vehicles produced today. It's improved emissions value is down to a smaller battery, simplified cooling circuit and recycled components.Shell’s project remains in its infancy currently, but the hatchback model showcased demonstrates there is potential for commercialisation.

Chery sub-brand Jetour has detailed its Chinese F700 ute, which is a spin-off from the Stockman diesel-hybrid due to launch in Australia.Sporting tough and angular styling a little different from the rounded-headlight look of the incoming Chery ute, the Jetour F700 shares the same newly-developed and hybrid-first platform and underpinnings.Unlike the Stockman, which will launch with a diesel hybrid powertrain specifically designed to set it apart in the Australian market, the F700 will use a 2.0-litre petrol plug-in set-up instead. The F700’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine produces 155kW/340Nm and is expected to follow in the footsteps of the G700 SUV that came before it. This means maximum combined power could be as high as 665kW/1135Nm.This could preview the future petrol plug-in hybrid version of the Stockman, which is due to launch in Australia in 2027.The space between the front and rear axles will be taken up by an Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which maximises EV range over mechanical capability. The related G700 SUV has an electronic front and rear differential, with a software-simulated centre differential. If the F700 follows in the footsteps of the G700, it will use a 34.1kWh battery pack. In the G700 this grants it a 150km EV-only driving range and a 1400km combined driving range according to the CTLC standard. Jetour confirmed via its social media that the F700 will have a 1300km driving range and a combined fuel consumption of 1.39L/100km.While it appears the F700 will also use independent coil-sprung rear suspension instead of a solid rear axle, data filings with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information technology confirm it will have a towing capacity of 3500kg.The new ute’s interior hasn't been fully revealed, but one teaser image shows a far more tech-heavy cabin than the Stockman. It features a large 15.6-inch central screen, and a second dash-topping panel which extends the entire length of the vehicle, acting as both an information screen and a digital instrument cluster. We know it will have wheel sizes of either 18- or 20-inches and an 800-volt electrical platform, which supports ultra-fast charging with confirmation of a V2L system.Jetour is expected to launch in Australia in 2027, although its range of boxy off-roaders will be distributed separately from its Chery parent company, which includes the Omoda, Jaecoo, and Lepas sub-brands.It will directly compete with GWM’s Tank and Cannon brands, with its products also squaring off against BYD’s smash-hit Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute and the related Denza B5 SUV.Stay tuned for more on Jetour as the brand gears up for an Australian launch. It has been hiring staff locally for some months.

Mini utes are the hottest new trend in motoring, and a brand new name has been added to the crush of bite-sized workhorses.Slate Auto is a new electric car company backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and its first vehicle will be the modular Slate Truck. It was first revealed in April, 2025, but there has been crickets every since ... until now.The Slate Truck is a little single-cab ute that can be converted into an SUV.It is a bare bones proposition with a starting price of US$24,950 ($36,200), which is several thousand more than originally promised.Turning it into an SUV with seating for five, but still two doors, lifts the price to US$29,950 ($43,450).The Slate Truck uses a 63kWh Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) battery that delivers a driving range of up to 330km. It can absorb up to 120kW via a DC fast charger or 11kW when connected to a compatible AC charger.Power comes from a single rear electric motor that produces 135kW and 264Nm.It has a handy payload of 700kg, which drops to 570kg for the heavier SUV, with the tray a similar length to a dual-cab ute. It can tow up to 900kg.Its rear-wheel-drive layout means there is a useable cargo area under the bonnet, which trumps any diesel- or petrol-powered ute out there.Slate will begin delivering Trucks at the end of the year in the US. There is no word on if the vehicles will be exported to Australia.Slate is preparing to sell their vehicles direct to customers, with no conventional dealerships. This could make expanding globally easier, especially given Bezos’ expertise in global e-commerce.The Slate Truck isn’t the only small ute in the world, with BYD, Ford and Toyota all building new work ponies. This new breed of small utes isn’t built on a rugged ladder frame that is designed to handle serious off-roading, but are car-based utes in a similar vein to the old Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon utes.Ford’s new electric small ute has been spotted testing in the US and is the first vehicle from its new Skunkworks, which was created to develop the new low-cost electric vehicle platform. It is due to launch in 2027, with Ford aiming for a circa-US$30,000 (A$42,600) price tag. This would join its hybrid Maverick ute, which has been a smash hit in the US.Toyota has been caught testing a new Corolla Cross-based ute in South America, and is again expected to launch in Latin America next year.It is expected to be based on the company’s TNGA-C platform, which would grant it access to the Prius’ plug-in hybrid set-up, as well as the tried-and-tested 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid set-up.BYD has also confirmed the Mako ute, which is expected to burst out of South America. In Brazil, the Mako is a plug-in hybrid producing an expected 175kW, and promising a circa-100km EV-only driving range, along with a choice of two- or all-wheel drive.A European launch also seems likely – though under the name Shark 5 – given patent filings have appeared in the EU. Reports also point to a flagship 1.5-litre PHEV variant producing 200kW of power being developed.

A number plate allegedly worth more than $10 million has been spotted in the wild, but you’ll never guess the car that has them on.A picture posted by a Reddit user in Victoria shows the ‘1’ plate appearing on a car worth nowhere near that value. The valuation of this plate would likely extend into the millions in today’s market. The ‘20’ number plate in Victoria was reported to have sold for $2.54 million in 2024.There are rumours the current owner of the ‘1’ plate has been offered more than $10 million, but turned it down. You’d expect a number plate worth more than every production car on the roads would be attached to something suitably exotic. It has been attached so some sought after models throughout the years, but none of them fall into the same ballpark as the potential value of the plates. They have appeared on many other vehicles since then, including a Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera. It seems to have primarily been attached to several Mercedes-Benz models like the E55 and E63 sedans. Most recently the plates have been spotted on a previous generation C43 wagon that seem to have been on the car since at least since 2018.The C43 was originally priced in Australia from $104,400, just over one per cent of the $10 million value attached to the ‘1’ plates. Now you can buy many examples of that generation of the C43 from less than $40,000, which is 0.4 per cent of the plates’ valuation. The '1' number plate has an extensive history in Victoria, according to reports. It was originally produced in 1932 but was forbidden from being put on any cars, with high-ranking Victorian officials disagreeing on who should display the plates on their car. This disagreement saw the plates locked away in a vault for more than a half century. The plates reappeared for the first time in 1984 at an auction, where they were won by a retired mechanic from Ballarat, paying $165,000. The number plate market has become increasingly lucrative in Australia, with the wealthy not just showing off with what they drive, but what plates are displayed on their cars. The NSW "1" plate sold for more than $10m in 2024 at a Lloyd's auction. The Queensland number plate 'Q12020' recently sold for $1 million, even though the seller was only asking $20,000 originally, according to the site.

Cupra has officially confirmed it will be introducing a fire-breathing, purely petrol-powered version of the Leon Sportstourer wagon in Australia in September. The Leon Sportstourer VZx will complement the existing VZe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) trim. Examples are in production now and order books will be opening shortly.Pricing will start from $67,490 before on-road costs, making it $2500 less than the VZe PHEV trim and $2500 more than the equivalent Leon VZx hatchback. This car is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 245kW and 420Nm, which is 24kW and 20Nm more than the equivalent Leon VZx hatch. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with drive sent through an all-wheel drive system.Cupra claims the Leon Sportstourer VZx can do the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds. This car essentially revives the Golf R Wagon in Australia under the Cupra brand as it’s powered by the same EA888 engine and has the wagon body style. The hi-po Golf wagon was axed locally back in 2023.The Leon Sportstourer VZx receives 19-inch black and copper forged alloy wheels, LED headlights, a hands-free power tailgate, adaptive dampers, Sennheiser sound system, leather-appointed upholstery, as well as heated front seats with memory function as standard. There's also a panoramic glass sunroof for an extra $2000, as well as the $7600 Extreme package which adds larger Akebono six-piston front brakes, Sabelt front bucket seats and matrix LED headlights, among other minor tweaks.Cupra is soon set to celebrate its fourth anniversary in Australia and its line-up is currently going through a refresh. The Leon hatchback and wagon, as well as the Formentor small SUV have now received mid-life updates, plus the Terramar and Tavascan mid-size SUVs launched over the last 18 months. The Born electric hatchback and Ateca small SUV have both been axed in Australia, but the Raval small electric hatchback is set to launch locally during 2027.Until the end of May, Cupra has sold a total of 975 cars, which is down 22.2 per cent year-on-year. Its best-seller has always been the Formentor, but it’s keenly followed by the Terramar and Tavascan mid-size SUVs.
