This recipe is also easy to scale. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 can of cream of chicken soup per chicken breast, whether you're making a smaller or larger batch.

Storing Leftovers

Store leftover chicken and sauce separately from the rice and toppings whenever possible. Place the chicken mixture in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

How to Apply HTV on a Fleece Blanket

Iron-on Vinyl vs. Heat Transfer Vinyl

Before we begin, let's clear up one question that often confuses new Cricut users.

Iron-on vinyl and heat transfer vinyl (HTV) are exactly the same product. Cricut calls it Iron-on, while many other brands refer to it as HTV.

No matter which name you use, it's a vinyl material with a heat-activated adhesive that permanently bonds to fabric when applied correctly.

Choose the Right Blanket

Not every blanket is a good candidate for HTV.

For the best results, choose a fleece blanket with a low pile. The flatter the fabric surface, the better the iron-on can bond to the fibers.

Blankets with long, fluffy fibers or heavy flock textures don't provide as much contact with the adhesive and may not hold up as well over time.

I originally made this blanket in 2018, and after years of regular use and washing, the design still looks fantastic. I really believe choosing a low-pile fleece made a big difference.

Prepare Your Design

The cut file for this project is already sized and ready to use in Cricut Design Space.

The design measures approximately 11½ inches wide, but you can customize the size if you'd like. Before cutting, remember to mirror the design since you'll be using heat transfer vinyl.

Place the HTV shiny side down on a LightGrip mat and follow the prompts in Cricut Design Space to cut your design.

I cut mine using a Cricut Maker, but any Cricut machine that cuts iron-on vinyl will work perfectly for this tutorial.

Weed the Design

After cutting, remove the excess vinyl from around the design.

A Cricut BrightPad makes weeding much easier because the light shines through the carrier sheet, making tiny cut lines much easier to see.

Take your time removing the centers of letters and any small details before moving on to pressing.

Apply the HTV

Position the design where you'd like it on the blanket. I chose the bottom left corner so the wording is easy for others to read while someone is using the blanket, but you can personalize the placement however you'd like.

Although I centered mine by eye, using a ruler or measuring tape will help if you want perfectly even placement.

Because blankets are thicker than T-shirts, make sure you're pressing on a firm surface, such as an EasyPress Mat or another heat-resistant surface.

Use the Correct Heat Settings

Always check the Cricut Heat Guide before pressing your project.

The recommended temperature and pressing time vary depending on both the type of HTV and your fabric. For my blanket and Cricut Gold Foil Iron-on, the recommended setting was 315°F for 30 seconds.

Since my design was slightly larger than my EasyPress heating plate, I completed one press, then carefully moved the EasyPress to cover the remaining section and repeated the heat cycle.

Applying firm, even pressure across the entire design helps create a long-lasting bond.

Peel the Carrier Sheet

Allow the carrier sheet to cool, or peel it warm, according to the instructions for your specific vinyl.

Because fleece has a soft texture, it may seem like the clear backing won't lift off at first. Start slowly from one corner, and once it begins releasing, the rest usually peels away easily.

If any part of the design lifts with the carrier sheet, simply place it back down and apply another heat cycle.

Care Instructions

To help your blanket last for years, wash it inside out using cold water and avoid bleach or fabric softeners whenever possible.

Tumble dry on low heat or allow it to air dry. Excessive heat can shorten the lifespan of any iron-on design.

Final Thoughts

This has easily become one of my favorite blankets.

Not only is it incredibly soft, but every time I pull it out, it reminds me how simple it is to personalize everyday items with a Cricut. I've made these as gifts for my mom and sister, and they absolutely loved them.

Before You Begin

This box was designed specifically to fit my DIY mason jar citronella candles. If you're using different jars or containers, measure them first and adjust the cut list as needed.

If you're using scrap wood instead of a new board, make sure it's straight and in good condition before cutting.

You can also build this project from MDF for indoor decorative use, but I recommend solid wood for outdoor projects since it handles moisture much better.

Cut the Wood

Begin by cutting all of your pieces to length using a miter saw. Taking a few extra minutes to make accurate cuts will help everything fit together neatly during assembly.

After cutting, lightly sand away any rough edges or splinters before assembling the box.

This makes the finished project look much cleaner and helps the paint adhere evenly.

Assemble the Candle Box

Start by attaching the two short end pieces to the bottom board. Position one piece flush with each end, then secure it with a brad nailer.

I used three nails at each joint, which created a sturdy connection without needing to pre-drill pilot holes.

Next, attach the two longer side pieces to complete the box. Again, use three nails at each corner and check that everything stays square as you work.

If you don't own a brad nailer, you can substitute wood glue and finish nails or screws. When using screws, drill pilot holes first to help prevent the wood from splitting.

Sand and Paint

Once the box is fully assembled, sand all of the surfaces until they're smooth. Pay extra attention to the corners and edges where small splinters can remain after cutting.

Apply a coat of spray primer followed by several light coats of chalkboard paint, allowing each coat to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Thin coats create a much smoother finish than trying to cover everything at once.

After the paint has cured for 24 hours, condition the chalkboard surface following the paint manufacturer's instructions. This simple step helps the chalkboard perform better and makes it easier to erase future messages.

Add Your Candles

Now for the fun part!

Place your citronella candles inside the finished box and personalize the chalkboard sides with seasonal greetings, family names, or fun messages for guests. Kids also love decorating the box with chalk, making it a fun addition to summer gatherings.

The finished box looks great on a patio table, deck railing, or outdoor dining table and helps keep your candles grouped together in a single attractive display.

Helpful Tips

If your candle jars are slightly taller or wider than mine, simply increase the box dimensions before cutting your lumber.

It's much easier to customize the measurements at the beginning than to modify the finished box later.

You can also stain the wood instead of painting it if you prefer a more natural look, or choose outdoor paint colors that coordinate with your patio furniture.

Prepare the Monogram

Begin by cutting your monogram or custom design from permanent vinyl using your Cricut cutting machine.

A single letter creates a classic look, but names, simple graphics, or small logos work beautifully too. Weed away the excess vinyl and apply transfer tape to the front of the design.

Before applying the stencil, make sure the outside of the mason jar is clean and dry. Any fingerprints or oils can affect how well the vinyl adheres to the glass.

Carefully position the stencil on the jar and burnish it well so the edges are completely sealed. Taking a little extra time here helps create crisp, etched lines.

Etch the Glass

Apply a generous layer of Etchall Etching Cream over the exposed glass, making sure the entire design is covered.

Allow the cream to sit according to the manufacturer's instructions. While it works, avoid letting it drip onto any exposed glass outside the stencil.

I am not sure why my etching cream has turned brown, but it still worked, so I wasn't too worried.

When the time is up, rinse the cream away with water and carefully remove the vinyl stencil. The etched monogram will have a soft, frosted appearance that's permanent and won't peel or fade.

Assemble the Candy Jar

While the etching cream is working, you can prepare the lid.

Glue the wooden knob to the center of the flat mason jar lid and allow it to dry completely.

I originally tried spray-painting the knob, but the finish didn't adhere well, so I switched to white acrylic paint instead. It covered beautifully and gave the knob a smooth finish.

To create the pedestal, use E6000 glue to attach the mason jar to the glass candlestick. Allow the adhesive to cure for about 24 hours before filling or using the jar.

Once everything is dry, tie a ribbon around the top for a finishing touch and fill your custom mason jar with your recipient's favorite treats.

Gift Ideas

One of my favorite parts of this project is choosing what to put inside the finished jar.

Candy is always a fun choice, but these jars also make beautiful containers for homemade cookies, hot cocoa mix, bath salts, craft supplies, or small sewing notions.

Care Instructions

Because the design is permanently etched into the glass, it won't peel like vinyl decals.

To help protect the painted knob and glued pedestal, I recommend gently hand-washing the jar rather than placing it in the dishwasher. Avoid soaking the lid or the glued base in water for extended periods.

Choosing Your Clipboard

Any standard 6 x 9-inch clipboard will work for this project. Before decorating, check that the surface is clean and free of stickers, scratches, or any obvious defects that could show through your paper.

If you're making several clipboards as gifts, look for unfinished wood clipboards or inexpensive hardboard clipboards with the same dimensions. This makes measuring and cutting much easier.

Prepare the Clipboard

Begin by cutting the solid cardstock to 5 11/16 x 8 11/16 inches.

Slide the cardstock underneath the metal clip and use a pencil to mark where the metal bracket sits.

Measure how far the bracket extends onto the clipboard so you know exactly how deep to cut the notch.

Carefully trim away the marked section and test the fit.

It's much easier to remove a tiny bit more paper than to cut away too much, so make small adjustments until the cardstock fits neatly around the clip.

Once you're happy with the fit, use a corner rounder punch on all four corners.

This small detail helps the paper follow the rounded corners of the clipboard for a more finished look.

Apply adhesive evenly across the back of the cardstock, slide it into place beneath the clip, and smooth it down to remove any air bubbles.

Add the Decorative Paper

Cut the patterned paper to 5 x 7 inches and round the corners just as you did with the cardstock.

Center the patterned paper on top of the cardstock and adhere it securely. Layering the papers creates a decorative border that gives the standing clipboard a polished, professional appearance.

This is where you can really make the project your own. Try seasonal papers, scrapbook collections, family photos, or even adhesive vinyl to match your home decor.

Make the Ribbon Bow

A simple ribbon bow adds the perfect finishing touch.

Tie a bow using your favorite ribbon. I like using wider ribbon because it holds its shape nicely.

To create neat ribbon tails, fold each tail in half lengthwise and cut diagonally toward the folded edge. This creates the classic "V" shape that instantly makes the bow look finished.

I used a 14-inch wire wreath frame, but you can use any size available at your local craft store.

Just remember that a larger frame will require more fabric to achieve the same full, fluffy look.

Choosing Fabric

One of my favorite things about this tutorial is that almost any woven fabric works well. I used a plaid fabric from my stash because I loved the cozy fall colors, but don't feel limited to that.

Cotton quilting fabric, fat quarters, fabric scraps, old sheets, and even jelly rolls can all be turned into a beautiful finished wreath.

If you're buying fabric from a fabric store, one yard is usually enough for a 14-inch wreath form.

If you're working from your stash, simply gather coordinating fabrics and mix patterns for extra texture and interest.

Prepping the Fabric

Before assembling the wreath, you'll need to prepare your fabric.

Rip or cut the fabric into strips about 1 inch wide, then cut those strips into 5-inch lengths. Many quilting cottons tear easily along the grain, making this step quick and easy. If your fabric doesn't tear cleanly, a rotary cutter and ruler or a good pair of fabric shears work just as well.

Don't worry if every strip isn't perfectly identical. Small variations actually give the finished wreath more texture and character.

How to Tie the Fabric onto the Wreath

Making the wreath is wonderfully repetitive and relaxing.

Take one folded strip of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise to create a loop. Slide the folded end under one wire of the wreath frame. Bring the two loose ends through the loop, then pull gently to tighten the knot around the wire.

Continue tying strips of fabric around the outer ring, middle ring, and inner ring of the wreath frame until it is completely covered. As you work, occasionally fluff the fabric strips with your fingers to help fill any gaps.

The fuller you make the wreath, the better it looks. Don't be afraid to pack the knots closely together for lots of texture.

Customize Your Fabric Wreath

One of the best parts about this fabric wreath is how easy it is to personalize.

Change the fabric colors to match the holiday season, add a decorative bow, or mix solids with patterned fabrics for even more visual interest. What is the xTool F2 Ultra UV?

The xTool F2 Ultra UV is a desktop laser machine that combines a fiber laser and a diode laser in a single unit. Having both lasers dramatically expands the types of materials you can engrave and cut without needing multiple machines sitting on your craft table.

One of the biggest things that sets this machine apart is its versatility. It can engrave coated metals, stainless steel, crystal, wood, leather, paper, acrylic, slate, and many other materials. It also introduces features like wood embossing and inner crystal engraving that simply aren't possible on many hobby lasers.

Even though it offers professional-level capabilities, I found the machine surprisingly approachable. The setup was straightforward, and xTool Studio made getting started simple.

Unlike most hobby laser machines that use only diodes, the xTool F2 Ultra UV combines a fiber laser and a diode laser in a single device. Each laser excels with different materials, giving you far more versatility than a single-laser machine.

Who is the xTool F2 Ultra UV for?

After spending time with the F2 Ultra UV, I think it's an excellent fit for hobbyists ready to move beyond entry-level laser projects, small business owners creating personalized products, and makers who want the flexibility of both fiber and diode lasers in one machine.

If your primary focus is engraving metal, crystal, leather, wood, and other specialty materials, this machine offers tremendous versatility in a compact footprint.

If you're coming from a Cricut or another hobby cutting machine, the F2 Ultra UV feels like a natural next step when you're ready to start engraving and cutting materials that a blade simply can't handle. It opens up entirely new project possibilities without requiring a huge industrial workspace.

Unboxing the xTool F2 Ultra UV

The xTool F2 Ultra UV arrives well packaged, with everything securely packed to protect the machine during shipping.

The machine itself only weighs about 47 pounds, but the shipping box was very heavy for me, and I could not move it myself. I had to enlist my husband's help.

Even after the machine was removed from its packaging, I still found it difficult to move around.

Because of the weight, I recommend setting up the machine where you plan to use it long-term rather than moving it in and out of storage.

There was a little bit of assembly required, or rather disassembly of the braces to protect the machine during shipping. A Quick Start Guide is included that walks you through those steps.

What's Included in the Box

Inside the box, you'll find the xTool F2 Ultra UV, the touchscreen controller, a slatted work panel, a vent hose, a USB data cable, and the accessories needed to get the machine up and running.

The Inner Engraving Lens and riser are packed inside the laser. They aren't included in this image because I hadn't unpacked them yet.

One small detail I really appreciated was the included USB cable. One end connects to the laser with USB-C, while the computer end includes both USB-A and USB-C connections. That means whether your computer is older or newer, you won't need to purchase a separate cable.

It's also worth noting that it is important to use the cable included with the machine. This cord is designed to reliably transfer project files between your computer and the laser.

Setting Up the xTool F2 Ultra UV

Getting the F2 Ultra UV ready to use was much easier than I expected. From opening the box to having my first project ready to engrave only took about 20 minutes.

Install the Vent Hose

One of the most important setup steps is connecting the exhaust hose.

Like most laser machines, the F2 Ultra UV produces smoke and fumes when engraving or cutting certain materials. Those fumes should always be vented outdoors or through a compatible filtration system. In my workshop, I simply routed the hose through a nearby window.

Taking a few extra minutes to set up proper ventilation helps keep your workspace cleaner and safer while you're creating.

As with any laser engraver, always follow xTool's recommended safety guidelines and never leave the machine unattended while it's running.

Install the Slatted Panel

The machine includes a removable slatted panel that supports your materials during cutting and engraving.

This panel also improves airflow beneath your project, but orientation matters. Be sure the slats face the exhaust fan so air can flow freely beneath your material. Proper airflow helps remove smoke more efficiently while the laser is working.

Connect the Touchscreen Controller

The touchscreen controller plugs directly into the side of the machine next to the power button.

Once connected, the touchscreen becomes the control center for starting projects after they've been sent from your computer. The screen also displays the estimated run time, making it easy to monitor longer jobs.

Install xTool Studio

Before making your first project, you'll need to install xTool Studio.

The software is available as a free download for both Windows and macOS. Installation only takes a few minutes, and once it's finished, you're ready to connect your machine.

The F2 Ultra UV does not work with xTool Creative Space, which is what you use with the M1 lasers. I spent 20 minutes trying to connect to the wrong software before I realized.

The first connection is made with the included USB cable. After that, you can configure Wi-Fi so future projects can be sent wirelessly without reconnecting the cable each time.

I found the Wi-Fi setup straightforward, and once it was finished, the software recognized the machine immediately upon powering it on.

With everything connected, it was finally time to start making projects.

What is Atomm

Atomm is xTool's free online library where you'll find ready-to-make projects, tutorials, creative inspiration, and AI-powered design tools that integrate with xTool Studio.

It's a great place to browse project ideas when you're learning the machine or looking for your next laser project.

Atomm also includes AI-powered design tools that can help generate artwork or prepare images for engraving, making it a fun resource for experimenting with new creative ideas.

Every project I tested for this review came directly from Atomm.

Projects I Tested

Rather than making only the sample project, I wanted to try a variety of materials to see what the F2 Ultra UV could really do.

I intentionally chose projects that would test both the fiber and diode lasers across a variety of materials. Some focused on engraving, others on cutting, and a few showcased unique features that really make the F2 Ultra UV stand out.

Engraved Plastic Business Card

The engraved business card was the first project I made after connecting the machine.

Although it was a simple project, it immediately showed just how much detail this laser can produce.

This project showed just how cleanly the fiber laser engraves coated metal.

3 mm Basswood Farm Animals

I also cut several little woodland animals from 3 mm basswood.

The cuts were clean, the details were crisp, and they would make adorable magnets, ornaments, or children's craft kits.

This tested the diode laser's cutting performance.

Photo Engraving on Wood

One of my favorite tests was photo engraving.

I engraved a photograph onto wood, and the amount of detail that appeared in only a few minutes was genuinely impressive.

Fine details and shading were reproduced surprisingly well. It gave me confidence that this machine could handle personalized gifts and keepsakes with ease.

Intricate Layered Paper Artwork

The paper cutting surprised me even more.

Every tiny piece released cleanly from the sheet without tearing, making layered paper projects much easier than I expected.

K9 Crystal Inner Engraving

Then I moved on to one of the features I was most excited about: engraving inside K9 crystal.

Seeing a photo of my little dog suspended inside the crystal keychain felt almost like magic.

This demonstrates one of the F2 Ultra UV's signature features that very few desktop machines can do.

Deep Wood Embossed Coaster

Finally, I tested wood embossing.

While this process took considerably longer than standard engraving, the finished result had incredible depth and texture.

It is easily one of the coolest effects I've created with any laser machine.

Engraved Wooden Puzzle

This puzzle layered 2 projects: the puzzle and the detailed turtle.

Again, the attention to detail really impressed me!

One thing I appreciated was that every project taught me something new about the machine. Rather than feeling like I was simply testing features, I walked away with finished projects I'd actually be proud to give as gifts or sell.

What I Loved

After spending time with the xTool F2 Ultra UV and testing it on a variety of materials, a few features really stood out. While every machine has its strengths, these are the ones that impressed me the most.

Fiber Laser Quality

The engraving quality was the very first thing I noticed. The detail is incredibly crisp, even on small text and intricate designs.

One feature that immediately stood out was how clean the engravings looked. Unlike many diode and CO₂ lasers, the fiber laser leaves very little charring on compatible materials. Instead of spending extra time cleaning up burned edges, most projects came out looking finished right off the machine.

Crystal Inner Engraving

Being able to engrave inside a crystal was easily one of my favorite features.

Watching a photo appear suspended inside a K9 crystal block almost felt like magic the first time I tried it. It's a capability that opens the door to personalized keepsakes, memorial gifts, ornaments, and custom jewelry that would be difficult to create with many other desktop laser engravers.

I already have several project ideas planned using this feature alone.

Wood Embossing

The wood embossing feature completely exceeded my expectations.

Unlike traditional laser engraving, embossing creates real depth and texture that you can both see and feel. My embossed coaster took several hours to complete, but the finished result looked incredible and was well worth the extra time.

If you enjoy making premium home décor, signs, or gifts, this feature is a lot of fun to experiment with.

Compact Footprint

Considering everything this machine can do, I was pleasantly surprised by its size.

The F2 Ultra UV is taller than it is wide, so it doesn't take over an entire workbench. If your craft room is already full of Cricut machines, heat presses, sewing machines, and other supplies like mine, you'll appreciate that it doesn't require a huge dedicated workspace.

Easy Setup

I expected setting up a dual-laser machine to feel a little intimidating, but it really didn't.

From unboxing to completing my first project took about 20 minutes. The Quick Start Guide walks you through the setup, and once xTool Studio is installed, connecting the machine is straightforward. Even configuring the Wi-Fi connection was quick and painless.

A Few Things to Consider

No machine is perfect, and there are a couple of things worth considering before purchasing the xTool F2 Ultra UV.

The biggest limitation for me is the work area. The cutting area measures approximately 8 × 8 inches, which is smaller than many craft materials. Since many wood blanks, acrylic sheets, and other supplies are sold in 12 × 12-inch sizes, I occasionally find myself wishing for a little more space.

If you plan to engrave longer items, xTool does offer a conveyor accessory that extends the working length. However, the maximum width remains 8 inches.

That said, increasing the work area would also mean increasing the overall size of the machine. Personally, I appreciate the compact footprint enough to make that trade-off.

My Final Rating

If I had to rate the xTool F2 Ultra UV, I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The engraving quality is outstanding, the dual-laser system makes it incredibly versatile, and features like crystal engraving and wood embossing help it stand out from many other desktop laser engravers. My only real wish is for a larger cutting area.

If your goal is to expand beyond vinyl and paper crafts into engraving metal, crystal, leather, wood, acrylic, and dozens of other materials, the xTool F2 Ultra UV is an impressive machine that offers a tremendous amount of creative freedom.

I know I'm only scratching the surface of what it can do, and I'm already looking forward to creating many more projects with it.

Printing Your Bingo Cards

This PDF includes 12 cards, so printing 2 cards per sheet will help save paper and ink, though this method is completely optional.

Printing on regular copy paper works great, but cardstock creates sturdier bingo cards if you plan to reuse them.

After downloading, open the PDF file, and then send it to your printer.

Inside the printer settings, select scale to fit and 2 copies per page.

I am on a Mac and am using an HP printer. If you are using a PC or a different printer, your settings screen may look differently than mine, but you should still be able to change these settings.

Preparing the Game

Each set includes printable bingo cards along with calling pieces. Cut the Bingo cards apart using a paper trimmer.

Cut apart one page to create the bingo caller cards. Place the squares into a bowl, basket, or small gift bag so the bingo caller can randomly draw one image at a time during the game.

If you'd like to reuse the game, laminating the cards is a great option.

To mark the squares, single candies like Smarties or M&Ms work great, plus double as a snack!

How to Play Birthday Bingo

Give each player one of the printable bingo cards along with something to use as markers, such as candy, coins, buttons, or small game pieces.

The bingo caller draws one picture at a time and announces it to the group. Players cover the matching image if it appears on their card.

Before You Cut

Take a minute to measure the front of your hand sanitizer bottle before resizing the SVG.

Bottle shapes vary widely, and sizing the design specifically for your bottle will give you the best finished result.

This SVG can also be used with a Silhouette cutting machine if you have Silhouette Studio Designer Edition.

Cutting the Design

The design consists of multiple layers, allowing you to use different vinyl colors for the face and lettering.

Mixing colors is a fun way to give each bottle its own personality.

Once the design has been cut, weed away the excess vinyl so only the finished design remains on the carrier sheet.

Applying the Vinyl

Removing the manufacturer's label gives your finished gift a much cleaner look.

If any adhesive remains behind, a little Goo Gone works well. Just be sure to wash the bottle afterward with dish soap to remove any oily residue before applying the vinyl.

What Kind of Sponges Should You Use?

Not all sponges work well for this project. Skip any sponge that has a rough scrubbing pad attached, since those can make cutting more difficult and don't work as well for sponge water bombs.

For this craft, the inexpensive sponges are actually the best choice. There is no need to spend extra money on name-brand sponges because they all work about the same once they are cut and assembled.

I used compressed sponges, which are pretty neat. They come packaged flat, so you can fit a lot of them into a small box. Once they get wet, they expand into full-size kitchen sponges.

They were affordable, easy to store, and worked perfectly for making sponge water bombs.

Instructions

Begin by cutting each sponge into three strips. You can cut them when they are dry and flat or wet them first.

Group six sponge strips together and wrap with a zip tie.

Tighten the zip tie, and you will see the ball shape form.

If your sponge ball looks uneven at first, fluff the strips with your hands after tightening the zip tie. This helps create a fuller pom-pom shape.

Trim the end of the zip tie as closely to the ball as possible. This makes the finished sponge ball more comfortable to hold and throw.

And wallah! You have a sponge ball! Super easy, right?

Storage Tips

After playing, squeeze out excess water and allow the sponge water bombs to dry completely.

Storing them dry helps prevent mildew and keeps them ready for the next water fight.

Why You'll Love Sponge Water Bombs

One of my favorite things about sponge water bombs is how simple they are.

They can be used over and over again, making them a budget-friendly alternative to traditional water balloons.

They are also much softer than water balloons, which makes them great for younger children.

Just toss them into a bucket of water, give them a squeeze, and they are ready for action.

Fun Ways to Use Sponge Water Bombs

These are perfect for a classic water balloon fight without all the cleanup.

Fill a bucket of water and let everyone reload between rounds. You can also use them for relay races, target games, poolside activities, or backyard obstacle courses.

We have even used them indoors without water as soft tossing toys instead of beanbags.

Why a Simple Summer Tablescape Works

One of the biggest misconceptions about tablescapes is that they have to be elaborate.

In reality, some of the most beautiful summer tablescapes are built around a few thoughtfully chosen pieces.

A simple summer table allows the dishes, textures, and natural elements to shine without feeling cluttered.

It also makes entertaining easier because you can spend less time decorating and more time enjoying your guests.

Set a Simple Summer Tablescape

Step 1: Choose a Color Palette

Before placing anything on the table, decide on a color palette.

I naturally gravitate toward neutrals because they create a timeless base that works year-round. If you prefer more color, choose one main color and one or two accent shades to keep the table feeling cohesive.

A quick trick I use is to gather all of the pieces together before setting the table. If the items look good side by side on the counter, they will likely work beautifully together on the table.

Step 2: Build the Foundation

Every successful tablescape starts with a strong foundation.

For this summer table, I began with simple dishes. A large dinner plate layered with a smaller salad plate creates visual interest without requiring much extra decor.

Layering pieces instantly makes the table feel more intentional while still keeping the overall look relaxed and approachable.

Step 3: Add Texture

Texture is often what transforms a basic table setting into something memorable.

Adding linen napkins, unique cutlery, woven elements, or natural materials creates depth without adding clutter. Even when working with a neutral color palette, mixing textures helps the table feel warm and inviting.

The black cutlery used on this table created a striking contrast against the lighter dishes and added just the right amount of modern charm.

Step 4: Create a Simple Centerpiece

When designing a summer tablescape, I like the centerpiece to support the table rather than compete with it.

The center of the table should encourage conversation, not block it. Using a few faux concrete vases with faux stems creates height and interest while keeping sight lines open for guests.

This approach works especially well for casual dinners, family meals, and summer gatherings where the focus is on spending time together.

Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches

The finishing details are often what make the biggest impact.

A small stem of greenery placed on each plate instantly makes the table feel finished. You could also use place cards, small favors, fresh herbs, or seasonal accents, depending on the occasion.

These tiny details create a welcoming experience that makes guests feel special before the meal even begins.

Tips for Summer Entertaining

One of my favorite decorating tricks is to create a tablescape that can work for multiple occasions.

A neutral foundation with layered dishes, linen napkins, and simple decor allows you to easily change the look throughout the season.

Swap stems, add different colors, or incorporate seasonal accents without completely redesigning the table.

This flexibility makes summer tablescapes both practical and beautiful.

Before You Cut Your Design

Before sending the design to your Cricut machine, take a moment to measure the front of your shirt. Shirt sizes and styles vary widely, so sizing the design to the actual shirt rather than relying solely on a template usually yields the best results.

If you are using a Silhouette machine instead of a Cricut, the SVG file can also be imported into Silhouette Studio Designer Edition for cutting.

Prepare the Design in Cricut Design Space

In Cricut Design Space, open a new project.

I went with a premade template for an Iron-On T-Shirt, size medium. This gives me a canvas already sized to 10 x 10 inches that will mirror the design.

Click Upload Image, upload the SVG, and resize it to fit within the canvas.

Before cutting, double-check the sizing by measuring the front of your shirt to make sure the design will fit as you want.

When happy with the sizing, click on Make.

On Mat Preview, you can see that your design was automatically mirrored.

Click Next, and select your cutting material. Used the setting for Everyday Iron-on. I am not using Cricut-branded material, but I have found that this setting works for most non-specialty iron-on or heat-transfer vinyl.

I like to precut my vinyl sheets to save material, so I just pulled out my paper trimmer and cut a shorter length.

You can see how much material you'll need on the Mat Preview screen.

Apply the vinyl to a StandardGrip Mat with the shiny side down.

Load the mat into your Cricut, then press play to start the cut when the light starts blinking.

Weed the Vinyl Design

After the Cricut machine finishes cutting, carefully remove the vinyl from the mat.

Use a weeding tool to remove all excess iron-on around the design, then remove the inner pieces.

I always like to turn the iron-on over to look at it to see if I have missed any spots that weeding.

Apply the Iron-On

I used a Cricut EasyPress, but any heat press will work.

Check the package instructions for the best heat settings, and preheat the heat press.

I preheated my press to 315°F and set the timer for 30 seconds.

While the heat press warms up, iron the shirt to remove any wrinkles. It's okay if it isn't to the temperature, since we're just removing the wrinkles.

Then go over the shirt with a lint roller to remove any dust or hair.

I like to use a t-shirt ruler, but that is completely optional. It just helps center-align the design on the front shirt.

Follow the package instructions and press the iron-on onto the shirt.

My instructions called for heavy pressure, so I leaned on the press as I pressed. 😆

The instructions also called for a cool peel, so when the carrier sheet was cool to the touch, I slowly pulled it back. If any area doesn't stick to the shirt and comes up with the liner, lay it back down and repress.

The finished shirt is so cute, and now everyone knows where I'd rather be! 😂

As I started planning, I put together this beach packing list filled with travel-friendly essentials that make a beach vacation more comfortable without overloading your suitcase.

Before You Start Packing

When flying to a beach destination, every item should earn its place in your luggage.

Look for lightweight pieces that serve multiple purposes, and avoid packing bulky or difficult-to-transport items.

The right gear helps you stay comfortable while keeping your suitcase manageable.

Must- Haves

Modest Swimsuits

A comfortable swimsuit is the foundation of any beach vacation. I always recommend packing at least two so one can dry while you wear the other.

These options offer coverage, comfort, and confidence without sacrificing style.

Swim Cover-Ups

Cover-ups are one of the most versatile items you can pack.

They make it easy to move from the beach to lunch, shopping, or the hotel lobby without needing a complete outfit change.

Travel Accessories

These are the little things that make a huge difference during a trip.

Every home has that one room that lingers on the to-do list long after the major renovations are finished. This dining room was exactly that space.

The foundation of the makeover had been completed months earlier, but the finishing details were still missing.

As any designer or DIY enthusiast knows, those final touches are often what bring a room together and make it feel intentional rather than unfinished.

Before and After

The transformation in this dining space is one of my favorites in the entire house.

What was once a dark, dated room became a bright and airy gathering place filled with contrast, texture, and character.

One of the biggest lessons from this makeover is that you do not always need a full renovation to create dramatic results.

Strategic updates, thoughtful finishes, and a clear design direction can completely change how a room feels.

Updating the Cabinet Doors

The first thing that needed attention was the cabinetry.

The original cabinet doors felt busy, and the large gaps between them made the entire wall feel disjointed. Because the cabinets occupied so much visual space in the room, they naturally took center stage, making them impossible to ignore.

Rather than replacing the entire cabinet system, new shaker-style full-overlay doors were installed from Fast Cabinet Doors.

The larger door fronts reduced the visible gaps and gave the cabinetry a cleaner, more custom appearance.

This simple change made the cabinetry feel more like a built-in feature than an afterthought.

If your dining area includes a china cabinet, built-in storage, or sideboards, updating the doors can often create a dramatic improvement without a complete replacement.

Painting the Wood Floors

The floors in this room were always a challenge.

Unlike the surrounding rooms, these floors were not original to the house because the dining room had once been a covered porch. The wood species differed from that of the adjacent flooring, making the transition feel disconnected.

If this had been a forever home, a completely different flooring solution might have been installed. Herringbone brick was high on the wish list. However, as with many renovations, budget considerations helped guide the final decision.

The existing floors were still in good condition, so instead of replacing them, they were painted. The fresh finish helped unify the room and created a bright backdrop that allowed the furniture and architectural details to stand out.

White floors are not for everyone, but in this room, they made a huge impact.

Painting the Wood Paneling

The room was originally covered in wood paneling from floor to ceiling.

While wood paneling can work beautifully in some homes, this particular space felt heavy and dark. Since painting paneling had worked so well in previous homes (see it here), it was an easy decision to repeat the process here.

Painting the paneling white instantly brightened the room and eliminated the need for costly drywall installation. It also helped create a cleaner canvas for the high-contrast design direction.

Sometimes, the most effective makeover projects involve working with what is already there rather than tearing everything out.

Creating a High-Contrast Look

Once the major updates were finished, it was time to focus on the overall design.

The goal was to create a designer dining room that felt fresh, bright, and visually interesting without becoming overly decorated.

Because the room has so many windows, wall decor was not really necessary. Instead, the design relied on contrast to create visual impact.

Dark charcoal velvet curtain panels from IKEA were installed around the windows. Their rich color provides a striking contrast against the white walls and painted paneling. The curtains also help frame the windows and add softness to the room.

Playing with different colors and contrasting finishes is one of the easiest ways to create a room that feels professionally designed.

The Dining Table and Chairs

The dining table became one of the room's stars.

A raw wood dining table brought warmth back into the space and prevented the black-and-white palette from feeling cold. The natural wood tones balance the painted finishes and add an organic element to the room.

The cane chairs were a Facebook Marketplace find that received a makeover of its own before joining the space. Together, the table and chairs create a relaxed but elevated look that works beautifully in both a dining room and a formal dining space.

This combination proves that mixing old and new pieces often creates the most interesting interiors.

Finishing Touches

The decor remained intentionally simple.

A black vase, layered rugs, updated cabinet hardware, and a statement light fixture were enough to complete the room without overwhelming it. The abundance of natural light already provided so much visual interest that the space did not need much else.

One of the most important things decorators learn over time is that not every surface needs to be filled. Sometimes, allowing a room to breathe creates a stronger design than adding more accessories.

When my kids were little, I quickly learned that fabric toys were much safer than anything hard enough to become a flying projectile across the room.

Fair warning: I am definitely not a professional pattern maker, so this pattern came together through plenty of trial and error, but sometimes those are the projects that turn out to be the most loved.

The amount of fabric needed will vary depending on your fabric choices and cutting layout.

Approximately 2 yards of fabric were purchased for this project, but you could easily do it with one.

Before You Begin

Print the PDF pattern at 100% scale and cut out all of the template pieces with scissors. Before cutting into your fabric, double-check that the pattern pieces print at the correct size.

A ¼-inch seam allowance is used throughout the entire project.

Because several pieces are curved, clipping the seams and trimming excess bulk before turning will help the finished pieces hold their shape much better.

Sewing the Teapot

For the teapot body, cut six main body pieces. Two coordinating fabrics were used for this sample, creating alternating panels around the teapot.

Sew together one piece from each fabric along one side, right sides together. Repeat until you have two sewn pairs and two remaining single panels. This arrangement creates the alternating design around the finished teapot.

I know the picture shows three pairs, but you really only want two sewn pairs and two single strips.

Next, sew the handle pieces right sides together, leaving one short end open for turning. Turn the handle right side out, lightly stuff it with Polyfil, and stitch the opening closed by hand.

For the spout, fold the fabric piece in half lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch along the long edge, leaving the angled end open. Turn the spout right side out, add a small amount of stuffing, and stitch the angled end closed.

Arrange the teapot body pieces right sides together, placing the handle and spout between the fabric layers on opposite sides. Pin everything securely before sewing.

Leave a small opening in one seam so the teapot can be turned right side out later. After stitching, clip the curved seams, turn the teapot right side out, and fill it firmly with Polyfil. Hand sew the opening closed using an invisible ladder stitch.

Making the Teapot Lid

The lid is made from two circular pieces that create a slightly raised shape.

Sew each circular section into the notched area indicated on the pattern. This gives the lid its curved, conical shape.

To create the lid knob, cut a small fabric circle approximately 2 inches in diameter. Sew a gathering stitch around the outer edge, place a small ball of Polyfil inside, pull the thread tight, and stitch the opening closed.

Attach the fabric ball to the center of one lid piece.

Place the two lid sections right sides together and stitch around the outer edge, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the lid right side out, lightly stuff it, and stitch the opening closed. The finished lid should rest neatly on top of the teapot.

Sewing the Teacups

Each teacup is constructed using two rectangular pieces and two circular bases.

Place a rectangle and a circle right sides together and sew around the curved edge to create a cup shape. The finished piece will resemble a small fabric bowl.

 Here is a pic of what the bottom will look like when you are done.

Repeat this process until you have two cup sections for each finished teacup.

Press the top edge of each cup section toward the wrong side by approximately ½ inch. Consistency is more important than an exact measurement, so simply make sure all the teacups are folded by the same amount.

Turn one cup section right side out and leave the other with the wrong side facing out. Insert one inside the other so all raw edges are enclosed between the layers.

Topstitch around the upper edge to secure both layers together and create a clean finish.

Adding the Teacup Handles

Fold a handle piece so the wrong sides face each other.

Topstitch around the outer edge, folding the ends under as you sew for a finished appearance.

Shape the handle into a circle and hand stitch it securely to the side of the cup. Repeat for all teacups.

For a more decorative finish, lace trim can be added around the top edge of the teacups. The trim may be sewn in place or attached carefully with hot glue.

Sewing the Saucers

Each saucer requires two fabric circles.

Place the circles right sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a small opening for turning.

Clip small notches around the curved edge to reduce bulk and help the saucer lie flat. Turn the saucer right side out, press carefully, and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Repeat for each saucer needed for your tea set.

Finished Fabric Tea Set

Once all of the pieces are complete, arrange the teapot, teacups, and saucers together for a soft and adorable tea set. The lightweight fabric construction makes them easy for children to carry, stack, and play with during tea parties.

This project may take a little patience, but the finished set becomes a treasured handmade toy that can be enjoyed for years.

Prepare the Design in Cricut Design Space

Begin by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space and adding it to your canvas.

The shadow frame used for this project measures 12 x 12 inches. To fit properly inside the frame, resize the design to approximately 10 inches wide. If you are using a different frame size, simply adjust the design dimensions to fit your project.

Before cutting, double-check the size and placement of the design on your canvas. This is also a great time to experiment with different fonts or sizing if you want to create your own version of the project.

Once everything looks correct, click Make and follow the prompts in Cricut Design Space to cut the design.

A Cricut Maker, Explore, or Joy Xtra can all complete this project as long as the design fits within the machine's cutting area.

Weed the Vinyl Design

After the Cricut machine finishes cutting, carefully remove the vinyl from the mat.

Use a weeding tool to remove all of the excess vinyl surrounding the design. Take your time around smaller letters and detailed areas to avoid accidentally pulling up part of the quote.

Once the excess vinyl is removed, the design is ready to transfer.

Apply the Vinyl Saying to the Frame

Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the vinyl design. Place the transfer tape over the vinyl, then use a scraper to firmly burnish the surface.

Slowly peel the paper backing away from the vinyl. As you pull it back, check that the vinyl is lifting with the transfer tape.

If any part of the design stays behind, press it again with the scraper and try peeling more slowly.

Before placing the design onto the glass, clean the glass surface and remove any fingerprints or dust. This helps the vinyl adhere properly and prevents debris from becoming trapped underneath the design.

Carefully center the quote on the glass and press it into place. Use the scraper tool again to smooth the vinyl onto the surface.

Slowly remove the transfer tape while making sure the vinyl remains attached to the glass. If any section begins lifting with the transfer tape, press it back down and continue removing the tape slowly.

If you notice any air bubbles, use the scraper tool to gently push them toward the nearest edge of the design.

Finish the Shadow Box

Once the vinyl quote is applied, remove the back of the shadow frame.

Place a sheet of glitter paper behind the glass and secure it inside the frame. The glitter creates a beautiful background that makes the quote stand out while adding extra sparkle.

Replace the back panel and secure it according to the frame manufacturer's instructions.

That's it! In less than an hour, you have a custom Cricut decor piece that looks beautiful when displayed on a shelf, hung on a wall, or placed on a desk.

After finishing a wood paneling makeover, it was hard not to notice how dark the wood trim suddenly looked.

The trim seemed to be everywhere, and while painting trim is definitely a time-consuming project, the transformation was worth every minute.

If you're looking for a way to brighten a room and update dated woodwork, this tutorial walks through the process from prep to paint.

It is not a perfect method, and there are a few shortcuts involved, but sometimes "done" really is better than perfect.

Before You Start

If you have wood trim sitting directly against carpet, there is no point pretending this is the most enjoyable project on earth. It takes patience, careful prep, and a little bit of faith that you won't ruin the carpet.

• Will paint end up on the carpet at some point? Probably.
• Can it usually be cleaned up if you catch it quickly? Most of the time, yes.
• Should you sand your wood trim before painting? Ideally, yes.
• Was every piece of trim sanded during this project? No.
• Did the paint still adhere well enough? Yes.
• Was the finish absolutely perfect? Not quite.
• Would this same process be used again? Absolutely.

Sometimes older homes require balancing perfection with practicality.

Why Paint Wood Trim White?

Many older homes were finished with stained wood trim, and while it may have looked beautiful when it was installed, it can sometimes make rooms feel darker or more dated.

Painting wood trim white instantly brightens a space and helps walls, furniture, and decor stand out. It is also much more affordable than replacing trim throughout an entire home.

In this particular house, the previous owners had beautiful woodwork throughout nearly every room. The trim was in excellent condition, but painting it white helped create a cleaner and more updated look.

The Prep Work

Preparation is what makes the biggest difference in the final result.

Start by moving furniture away from the walls and laying down drop cloths to protect the floor. Even careful painters deal with occasional drips, so protecting the area first saves a lot of cleanup later.

Use a damp rag to thoroughly wipe down all of the trim. Years of dust, grime, and household buildup can prevent primer and paint from adhering properly.

Once the trim is clean and dry, inspect it closely for nail holes, dents, or damage. Fill any imperfections with wood filler and allow it to dry completely according to the package directions.

If there are gaps between the trim and the wall, now is also the perfect time to apply caulk. This small step makes painted trim look much more finished and professional.

For the best results, lightly sand the trim with fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding helps remove shine from the old stain and gives the primer something to grip.

If you decide to skip sanding, as happened during this project, just know that extra coats of primer become even more important.

Protecting Carpet and Floors

If your trim sits against carpet, this step requires a little extra patience.

Apply painter's tape directly along the edge of the trim. Work in small sections rather than trying to tape the entire room at once.

A paint shield or paint guide becomes incredibly helpful here. Slide it between the carpet and the trim, pushing it down as far as possible. This creates a barrier that helps protect the carpet while allowing paint to reach the bottom edge of the trim.

Once the tape is in place, attach plastic drop cloths to the taped area for additional protection. Carrying a small canvas drop cloth around the room is also a good backup plan in case the plastic tears.

Priming the Wood Trim

When covering stained wood trim, primer is not optional.

A high-quality bonding primer is the best choice for blocking stains and preventing them from bleeding through the finished paint. Zinsser Primer is the best primer because it provides excellent coverage over stained wood surfaces.

Apply the primer using a brush, working carefully along the edges and corners. If your trim sits against carpet, continue using the paint shield while painting.

Three coats of primer were needed to fully cover the stain. It may sound excessive, but wood trim often requires more primer than expected, especially when transitioning from dark stain to white paint.

Allow each coat to dry completely according to the manufacturer's directions before applying the next coat.

Painting the Trim

Once the primer has cured, it is finally time for paint.

A semi-gloss finish is often considered the best paint finish for trim because it is durable, easy to clean, and helps highlight architectural details.

Apply two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry fully before moving on. Some areas may need a third coat, especially if the original stain was very dark.

To minimize brush marks, use long, smooth strokes and avoid overworking the paint. Working in manageable sections helps maintain a more even finish.

Painting trim can feel repetitive, but seeing the bright white color gradually cover the stain makes the effort worthwhile.

The Finished Results

Window trim is usually much easier to paint because there is no carpet to worry about. Once everything is finished, the difference is incredible.

The white trim creates a brighter, cleaner appearance and helps every room feel more open. It is one of those projects that takes a lot of effort up front but continues to improve your home's look for years afterward.

Recommendations Before You Begin

If there is one piece of advice to take away from this project, it is not to rush the prep work. Cleaning, filling holes, sanding, and priming take time, but they create a much better finish in the end.

Ever since sharing the news about building a new home, one of the biggest questions has been about the floor plans and the overall house plan process.

Choosing a layout is honestly one of the most important parts of building because it affects how the home functions every single day.

From kitchen flow and storage to ensuring everyone has enough personal space, every decision starts with the blueprint.

If you are currently looking at new house plans, this post outlines the process for designing a home that truly fits your family and lifestyle.

Designing a Floor Plan

This home ended up falling somewhere between a semi-custom build and a fully custom home design. The builder already offered several home plans, but they also allowed buyers to work alongside architects to make major changes and personalize the layout.

There was one existing house plan that had a lot of the right starting points, especially in the kitchen, dining, and living room layout. Instead of starting completely from scratch, the original floor plans were heavily modified to better fit how the family actually lives day to day.

One feature that immediately stood out was the side exterior door. It may sound simple, but little things like that can completely change how functional a home feels. Having a separate entry for kids coming in and out helped avoid shoes, backpacks, and sports gear piling up around the kitchen and dining areas.

That is one of the biggest lessons when designing a home. Sometimes the smallest details end up mattering the most.

Start With Your Must-Haves

Before getting lost in Pinterest inspiration and scrolling through endless project plans online, it helps to sit down and figure out what truly matters for your own family.

It is very easy to get distracted by trends and beautiful photos online. Social media can make it seem like everyone needs a massive pantry, an oversized laundry room, or a dramatic entryway.

But the best floor plans are not necessarily the fanciest ones. They are the ones that support the way your family naturally functions.

For this home, the must-have list included:

• Spacious living room
• Large kitchen island
• Main floor primary bedroom
• Nothing above the primary bedroom
• Side exterior door
• Mudroom
• Walk-in pantry
• Home office
• Pocket office
• Freestanding tub
• Drinking fountain

Some of those priorities may sound practical, while others may seem random, but that is exactly the point. A house plan should reflect the people living in it.

A Helpful Exercise Before Finalizing Floor Plans

Square Footage and Room Layouts

Not every family wants a giant house, and honestly, bigger is not always better. Cleaning and maintaining thousands of extra square feet can quickly become overwhelming.

This particular home ended up being about 2,850 square feet with a 1.5-story layout. The main floor held most of the living spaces, while the second floor provided additional bedrooms and flexible space for the kids.

There was also an unfinished basement space planned for the future. That extra area created room for possibilities later on, like a rec room, hangout space for teenagers, or even a future guest or studio apartment setup if needed.

One thing that mattered more than overall square footage was making each room feel spacious and functional. A smaller home with smart design often feels better than a huge home with wasted space.

Main Living Areas and Open Floor Plans

When designing the main living spaces, several popular layout options are worth considering.

The layout chosen for this home featured an L-shaped arrangement among the kitchen, dining room, and living room. This type of open floor plan keeps the spaces connected while still giving each area its own purpose.

Another common option places the dining room directly between the kitchen and the living room. Some families also prefer completely separated rooms, which can create a quieter and more formal feel.

There is not really a right or wrong answer here. The best layout depends entirely on how the family uses the space.

For this home, keeping the kitchen connected to the main living area made the most sense because it allowed the home's center to remain active and connected during busy family life.

Functional Spaces Matter More Than People Expect

Once the main layout is chosen, the smaller functional spaces become incredibly important.

Things like mudrooms, laundry rooms, bathrooms, and pantry placement may not sound exciting at first, but these are the spaces that make everyday life easier. 

Laundry Room

The laundry room was intentionally placed near the back entry and kitchen area because that is where most daily activity happens.

While some people prefer laundry rooms near the bedrooms, this setup made more sense for how the household functioned.

Mudroom

The mudroom became one area where balancing priorities was tricky. Part of the space was sacrificed to fit a nearby half bathroom, but the final setup still worked well for everyday storage and organization.

There were also plans to eventually add lockers after living in the space awhile and figuring out what worked best. 

Pantry

A walk-in pantry was high on the priority list because keeping small appliances off the kitchen counters was important for maintaining a cleaner look.

Even a modest pantry can completely improve how a kitchen functions.

Bathrooms

Bathroom layouts were designed with privacy and functionality in mind. The primary bathroom included a freestanding tub, connected closet access, and a separate water closet for the toilet.

The kids' bathroom also kept the sink area separate so multiple people could use the space at the same time without getting in each other's way.

Planning Bedrooms and Furniture Layouts

Bedrooms may seem straightforward, but furniture placement matters more than people realize during the design process.

Before finalizing room sizes, it helps to think about bed sizes, dressers, benches, and overall furniture flow. Even rough furniture mockups can help avoid awkward spacing later.

Sometimes a room may look large on a blueprint but feel cramped once furniture is added.

Primary Bedroom

One priority was keeping the primary bedroom separate from the noisier areas of the home.

Having nothing directly above the bedroom also helped reduce noise from upstairs at night. 

Working With Architects and Builders

After narrowing down ideas and priorities, it is finally time to sit down with the professionals.

Architects and builders bring a completely different perspective to floor plans and often suggest ideas people never would have considered on their own. Keeping an open mind during those conversations is helpful, but it is also important to speak up when something matters to you.

This particular planning process took months to finalize, and small adjustments were still happening after construction had already started. That part may not make builders especially happy, but it is pretty common once people start to see the spaces come to life.

At the end of the day, designing a home is about creating a space that supports your real life, not just something that looks pretty on paper.

At the time, this project was honestly the last thing that needed to happen in the middle of everything else going on in the house.

There was already a finished living room makeover upstairs and a kitchen renovation happening downstairs, but somehow a chalkboard wall still got added to the list.

This bedroom makeover was all for a little boy who had been waiting forever for his superhero room, and the chalkboard wall felt like the perfect feature to make the space feel extra fun.

Even with the mess, paint splatters, and total chaos happening everywhere, seeing how excited he was made the whole project completely worth it.

The amount of chalkboard paint needed will depend on the size of the wall you plan to cover.

A standard gallon of paint usually covers around 350 to 400 square feet with one coat.

Before the Chalkboard Wall

One of the best things about this house was the huge upstairs bedrooms. Even with a king-size bed in the room, there was still plenty of open floor space for the kids to play.

For this project, the chalkboard wall was painted on the short wall directly behind the bed. The only slightly annoying part was the rounded corner where the wall met the ceiling. It was not a clean straight edge, which made taping everything off a little tricky.

Using FrogTape Advanced made a huge difference in achieving crisp paint lines around those awkward corners. Sometimes the right tape really does save a project from becoming frustrating.

Preparing the Wall

Before painting, the wall needs to be clean and free of dust or dirt. If the wall has rough spots or texture, lightly going over it with sandpaper helps create a smoother surface for the chalkboard paint.

Once the wall is prepped, apply painter's tape around the area you plan to paint. Taking a little extra time here really helps later when it is time to remove the tape.

One little trick that helps a lot is running a damp cloth or paper towel along the edges of the tape after it is applied.

This helps seal the tape to the wall so paint does not sneak underneath and ruin those clean lines.

Painting the Chalkboard Wall

Start by using a paintbrush around the edges and corners where the roller cannot easily reach. Then use a roller to fill in the rest of the wall with chalkboard paint.

Depending on the color underneath and the paint brand you use, you may need a second coat for full coverage. Let the first coat dry completely before deciding if another coat is needed.

Once the paint is dry to the touch, slowly peel the tape away from the wall in one smooth motion.

Pulling it off too quickly can sometimes pull fresh paint with it, and nobody wants to fix that afterward.

Conditioning the Chalkboard Wall

After painting, the hardest part is waiting. The chalkboard paint needs a few days to fully cure before it is ready to use with chalk.

Before anyone starts drawing all over the wall, the surface needs to be conditioned first. This sounds fancy, but it is actually really simple. Rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire wall and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth or paper towel.

This step helps prevent permanent ghost lines from appearing after erasing drawings. It only takes a minute and makes a big difference.

A Fun Wall That Actually Gets Used

One of the best things about a chalkboard wall is that it actually becomes part of everyday life. It is not just something pretty hanging on the wall that nobody touches.

This same technique works in bedrooms, playrooms, kitchens, offices, or anywhere that could use a little creative space.

Even guests always seemed drawn to this space. It had a cozy and welcoming feel that made everyone want to linger a little longer.

At the time, this porch refresh was meant to be simple and practical. We were preparing for a big life change, so I wanted the porch to still feel comfortable and inviting without completely redecorating the space.

I started by updating the planters and adding fresh summer flowers near the front door. Fresh flowers always bring life to front porch decor, and even small changes help brighten the whole area.

Cricut Design Space

Begin by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space and placing the design onto your canvas.

The SVG is already sized to create a 4-inch coaster, but you can resize it larger or smaller as needed.

Since the design only includes one citrus slice, you can duplicate the image as many times as needed to create a full set of coasters.

If you want to create different citrus styles, change the colors directly in Design Space before cutting. Making a mix of lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit coasters creates a really fun and colorful set.

Once your design is ready, click Make to continue to the cutting screen. The mat preview screen lets you double-check placement before cutting your felt.

On the material settings screen, choose felt as your material setting. Install the rotary blade into your Cricut Maker before loading the mat.

Place the felt onto the FabricGrip mat and smooth it down firmly so the material stays in place while cutting.

After cutting is finished, carefully peel the felt pieces from the mat to help prevent stretching or warping.

Coaster Pieces

Each coaster requires one white felt circle, one larger colored circle, and seven colored triangle pieces.

Originally, I designed the coaster with eight triangle sections, but once I started assembling them, the design looked a little crowded.

After testing both versions, I decided that seven pieces gave the coaster a cleaner, more balanced look.

Some photos may still show eight sections from the earlier version.

There are two different ways to assemble these citrus coasters. You can either glue the felt pieces into place or add hand stitches around each section.

The glued version is definitely faster and works great if you want a quick afternoon project.

The stitched version takes a little more time, but I personally love the extra texture it adds to the finished coaster.

Assembling the Felt Coasters

Before adding glue, arrange the felt triangles inside the white circle until you are happy with the placement.

This makes it easier to adjust spacing before anything is attached permanently.

If you are using only glue, apply adhesive around the outer edges and center of each triangle piece. Press the pieces firmly into place and allow the glue to dry fully.

If you plan to stitch the coaster pieces, use much less glue during assembly. A tiny dot of glue in the center of each felt piece is enough to keep everything from shifting while stitching.

Too much glue near the edges can make stitching difficult because the needle will not slide through the felt as easily.

Keeping the edges clear gives you room to sew comfortably around each section.

For the stitched version, thread your needle with three strands of embroidery floss and use a simple in-and-out stitch around each triangle section.

The stitches add such a cute, handmade touch to the finished coaster.

Once the top citrus layer is complete, flip the white circle over and apply glue in a spiral pattern around the back edges.

Center it on top of the larger colored felt circle and press everything together firmly.

After the glue dries, your coaster is finished and ready to use.
