One of the Chicago Cubs’ biggest moves at the MLB Trade Deadline was acquiring starting pitcher Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays. With some help needed in the starting rotation, Jed Hoyer went out and made some big additions.

The hope is that Gausman can help boost the rotation and make a push for the playoffs. With the addition of Gausman, it could set up Craig Counsell’s rotation for the long run.

As the Cubs are riding high following a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers and then winning a makeup game against Toronto on Thursday, they get set for a big weekend series in Kansas City. Gausman will make his debut on Friday night, hoping to get a series opening win for Chicago. Before that, he spoke to the media ahead of Thursday’s win over the Blue Jays. It was there that revealed he didn’t want to face his former team.

With that make up game on Thursday, there was a chance Gausman could debut against the Blue Jays. But he preferred not to and explained why.  While Gausman didn’t necessarily ask to not pitch against Toronto, he preferred his first start to be over the weekend instead:

“I just know it would be a lot,” Gausman said about the possibility of pitching against Toronto in his first Cubs start, according to Sportsnet. “I just want to focus on trying to win a game and pitching against them, I think I could do it, I know those hitters pretty well over there, their strengths, their weaknesses. But I think it would a lot mentally. For them, too.

“Really close with all those guys. Wish them nothing but the best. Looking forward to watching us play them today and seeing those guys again, but definitely glad I’m not facing them.”

The 35-year-old Gausman  is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 23 starts this season.  He’s in the final year of a five-year contract he signed with the Blue Jays and will help to lead the Cubs into a deep postseason run.

He could make a good first impression on Friday.

Johnson was not happy with the offense’s performance during Tuesday’s practice. He addressed the media two days later, called out the unit for its mistakes and admitted that it has a lot of things to work on.

“We tell them the truth in the meetings,” Johnson said. “They take what is said in the building very seriously. We have a bunch of professionals; they want to be great, and so when it’s good, we let them know that it’s good. When it’s not good enough, we let them know.

“Two days ago, practice was not good enough as a whole team, and certainly not as an offense. When you have false starts, delay of games, dropped passes, center-quarterback exchange (issues), it’s really not a good practice. You can’t evaluate the defense, either. So we have a long way to go.”

Chicago relied heavily on Press Taylor’s group last season, which was one of the most exciting to watch across the league. The franchise added key pieces to the defense to address positional needs and plug holes. However, the offense needs to play at a high level again for the Bears to achieve their goal this year.

A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces defeated Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever 86-84 win on Thursday. The three-time All-Star guard uncharacteristically missed two free throws in regulation to ice the game. She also committed a turnover late in overtime that led to Chelsea Gray hitting the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.

Clark finished with 20 points, three rebounds and eight assists. However, the reigning WNBA Player of the Week struggled from the field, shooting 7-of-20, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. Kelsey Mitchell once again top-scored for Indiana with 28 points, along with four assists, while Aliyah Boston contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Wilson, on the other hand, recorded 26 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Jackie Young supported her with 22 points, four rebounds and nine assists, and Gray added 11 points and seven assists.

Wilson’s steal on Clark in overtime drew a lot of attention on X. Fans accused the four-time MVP of fouling Clark and said the last play wouldn’t have happened if referees had called it. They shared their thoughts in the comments section.

“Why did the referee not called for foul there?” one user wrote.

“My first view I thought it was clean.. slowed down replay obviously arm was extended and it’s a foul. She sold the hell out of it too ,” posted another.

Clark and Co. have a chance to snap their two-game losing skid on Saturday. They will visit Chicago with their sights set on getting back on track. Meanwhile, Wilson and Las Vegas aim to secure three straight wins against the Minnesota Lynx also on Saturday.

Afterwards, the White Sox announced that Bart had suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand. The injury puts his availability for the remainder of the season in serious doubt and is a significant setback for Chicago just days after acquiring him at the trade deadline.

Bart was acquired from the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline in exchange for right-handed pitcher Duncan Davitt. Although he remains under team control through the 2027 season, he was Chicago’s immediate thought to upgrade its offense behind the plate while Kyle Teel continues to recover from a high ankle sprain as Bart was viewed to be a clear offensive improvement over Drew Romo and Edgar Quero.

Now, Teel’s recovery timeline carries even greater importance. The organization has been targeting an early September return, but with Bart sidelined indefinitely, getting its top catching prospect back as soon as he’s healthy becomes even more critical.

With the trade deadline behind them, Chicago’s alternative options over the next month are limited. One possibility is promoting veteran Eric Haase, who signed a minor league deal on July 28 and has started his Triple-A stint with eight hits in his first six games. While not officially announced by the team, baseball reporter Francys Romero has indicated that Quero is getting called up in light of Bart’s injury.

Indiana issued a statement regarding the third-quarter incident. The team clarified that three people involved decided not to return to their seats despite not violating the WNBA’s Fan Code of Conduct.

“Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses. Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct, the fan was not removed from the arena, but elected to leave. We consider the matter closed,” the Fever said.

The fans reportedly directed inappropriate comments toward Las Vegas guard Jackie Young. She then talked to the referees and security resulting to the fans’ ejection. However, it remains unclear what they said to Young.

Indiana will return to action on Saturday when they visit the Chicago Sky at the United Center. Meanwhile, Las Vegas will continue its road trip with a game versus the Minnesota Lynx on the same day.

The game developers will launch the game worldwide on Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. ET. They have set the early access period, including a three-day access, for Monday for Deluxe Edition and MVP Bundle buyers. MVP+ members started their seven-day access on Thursday. “Madden NFL 27” will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Chicago will open its regular season with an away game against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13 at Bank of America Stadium. The league has scheduled the home opener on Sept. 20 versus the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bears face the NFL’s toughest schedule; however, they are embracing the challenge and have set their sights on surpassing their success in 2025.

Cubs fans had been waiting months for Alex Bregman to come up in a big spot at Wrigley Field. Bregman was hitting .212/.320/.313 with four homers and 21 RBI at The Friendly Confines heading into Thursday. Plenty of times this year, Bregman came up in a do-or-die spot, and it ended with a popup, groundout, or strikeout.

Finally, that changed on Thursday down 2-0 with two outs and a 1-2 count on him in the bottom of the ninth against the Blue Jays. Not only did Bregman tie the game with a laser shot into the leftfield corner, he hit it off All Star closer Louis Varland. The 28-year-old flamethrower was a perfect 24/24 in save situations with a 1.09 ERA and 1.58 FIP in 52 appearances.

Alex Bregman comes up big

Pete Crow-Armstrong ultimately started and finished off the Cubs rally, but Bregman had the big swing. Not to mention his backhand play at third in the top of the 10th to steal a run. He truly saved the game twice.

That had to feel incredible for Bregman. He had a rough go over his first few months in Chicago, to the point where boos rained down from the stands. One could argue Bregman was the last guy they wanted to see up with runners in a big spot. Even Marquee’s Boog Sciambi and Jim Deshaies made a quip about him “having his moment”.

After all the jeers and hisses, watching him pumped up rounding the bases with the place going nuts can bring such a big smile to a Cubs fan’s face.

In the end, fans have wanted to see the shiny, expensive toy do cool things. Regardless if Crow-Armstrong is the best player on the team, Bregman was signed to come through in these moments. He’s done a lot of work to get back into form, and he can hang his hat on this. He was fired up, and the crowd was too. Hopefully a good sign of things to come for him.

The Fever are 19-11 for the season and fifth in the standings. They have turned things around following a 5-5 start and aiming to finish among the top three teams. The Chicago White Sox are 59-54 on the season so far. While they have lost two games in a row, fortunately the two teams closest to them in the American League Central Division have longer losing streaks. As a result, the White Sox still hold a 3.5-game lead in their division.

Indeed, very few people, if anyone, saw Chicago being a position to buy at the deadline prior to the start of the 2026 MLB season. However, the young core of players that the organization has assembled has helped the rebuild progress faster than expected.

To that end, Chicago did add several pieces ahead of the MLB trade deadline. However, those moves left a little to be desired for one key reason.

The Chicago White Sox were named a loser of the MLB trade deadline

The biggest move that Chicago made was the acquisition of three-time All-Star starting pitcher Luis Castillo. He certainly gives the White Sox needed depth in their rotation, but is also having a down year. What is more, they had to give up a pretty significant package of prospects in order to pry Castillo away from the Seattle Mariners.

For this reason, The Athletic has determined that the White Sox are one of the losers of the trade deadline:

“The White Sox were busier than just about everybody in the last week, but because most moves amounted to little more than better depth, their deadline will be defined by the Luis Castillo trade. Not only did GM Chris Getz take on the $30 million left on the contract of an aging starter with a 5.06 ERA this season, but he parted with a real prospect to do so.

“It’s unclear where catcher/outfielder Boston Smith will land on the diamond, but it’s not hard to see that the kid can hit. Seattle is happy to have him.

“The White Sox roster is better than it was a week ago — Huascar Brazobán strengthens the bullpen; Brenton Doyle fills out a Gold Glove platoon in center; Joey Bart eases a need at catcher while Kyle Teel is hurt — but there was no big win to make up for the Castillo overpay.”

As one can see, there are no real concerns about the quality of players Chicago acquired outside of Castillo. The Athletic acknowledges the White Sox are a better team now after the deadline than they were before it.

However, trading for Castillo is a huge risk, and giving up one of their better prospects to get him could come back to bite them. Hopefully the three-time All-Star can find his form again in Chicago and make it worth the team’s sacrifice.

The Chicago Cubs have improved to 67-49 on the season with their thrilling 3-2 walk-off win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon. This was their fourth consecutive win following the MLB trade deadline, a time that saw the Cubs add some much needed pieces to their roster.

One of those pieces came up huge in the victory today. Aaron Civale, who was acquired earlier from the Athletics, pitched three innings of solid relief while allowing one run. While he did not get the win, he was able to keep Chicago in the game.

It was just one example of how the Cubs did exactly what they needed to do ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Recently, The Athletic released its list of the winners and losers from the MLB trade deadline. Unsurprisingly, they declared the Cubs one of the winners with high praise for everything that they did:

“Coming out of the All-Star break, the Cubs’ rotation lined up like this: Colin Rea, Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon and David Peterson. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer overhauled that group ahead of the trade deadline, adding a pair of two-time All-Star right-handers, Clay Holmes and Kevin Gausman, and lefty Braxton Garrett.

“The Cubs, who also have Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown on the injured list, should be able to flex some of their surplus starters into relief roles in the postseason.

“Tyrone Taylor is another rangy outfield option for the Cubs, but he also has hit left-handed pitching well this season, which could come in handy in October. All of that adding came at a significant cost to the Cubs’ farm system.

“The departure of Jefferson Rojas, in particular, will sting. But the major-league roster is undeniably better because of it, and, in the midst of a division race, that matters most.”

Every addition the Cubs made addressed a pressing need. What is more, they filled those needs with quality players who should be able to contribute in a positive manner for the rest of the season.

The only downside, as referenced above, is that their already low-ranked farm system took a considerable hit. Hopefully they do not regret parting ways with Jefferson Rojas down the road.

The problems this week with the Chicago Bears offense during the pre-snap aren’t just a problem for head coach Ben Johnson’s side of the ball; it can impede the work that defensive coordinator Dennis Allen needs to do with his group this summer.

The Bears are hoping that coaching can help the defensive line get after the passer better this season.

When speaking to reporters on Thursday, Johnson argued that the offense has been “sabotaging practice” at points in training camp, and that’s taking away opportunities for players like defensive end Austin Booker to develop this summer.

“We’ve been talking a lot about the techniques and fundamentals that we’re coaching on the defensive line,” Johnson said. “And we see that come to fruition now that we have the pads on. So, it’s the consistency of that play, the pad level, the hand usage, our defensive ends, they toggle between a 9 technique and a 6I. So, there are different techniques that go along with it.

“So, we need to see consistency of play in all of our edge players. That’s what we’re working through right now. That’s where these padded practices are so, so valuable, and that’s why I get upset when the offense is sabotaging practice a little bit, because our defensive players need these reps as much as anybody else.”

On Wednesday, Bears offensive coordinator Press Taylor was critical of quarterback Caleb Williams’ communication in and out of the huddle this week. Johnson thought the offense made too many mistakes that started to accumulate, though he noted those things happen this time of year.

“Probably normal with the volume [of plays] continuing to increase, yet it’s not OK for us and we’re going to nip that in the bud,” Johnson said, via the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Bears need its defense to gain as many reps as possible in training camp. Amid injuries to the secondary, many new players will need some experience before Week 1.

The defensive line was already somewhat of a lost cause before training camp. But if the offense can’t get on the same page to get the ball snapped, the floor for the front seven could be even lower.

The Fever will return to action on Thursday. They will host the Las Vegas Aces in what promises to be an exciting matchup between two championship contenders. Cunningham and Co. aim to get back on track and start another winning streak. They have won seven of their last nine games and are 19-11 for the season.

Las Vegas, on the other hand, holds a record of 21-9 and sits second in the standings. The team comes off a blowout win over the Atlanta Dream and has its sights set on making it back-to-back victories.

The Chicago Bears are nearing the point of training camp where they will play their first pre-season game. In an effort to prepare for this, and the regular season, head coach Ben Johnson notched up the intensity of today’s practice. Prior to training camp on Thursday, he told the media that practice would be much more physical than in previous days.

There is, of course, a reason why coaches wait to start ramping up the physicality of practice. Players are still getting into game shape and cannot take on the full violence of a typical practice right away.

Some Bears players, unfortunately, had to leave practice early due to injury.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Braxton Jones had to leave practice early with injury. As fans will recall, injuries limited him to just six games in 2025. Chicago expects him to compete to be their starting left tackle this upcoming season.

Additionally, it has been reported that defensive end Montez Sweat had to leave practice with injury as well:

Defensive end Montez Sweat and defensive back Dallis Flowers have left practice with Bears trainers.

Flowers needed help off the field. He was engaged in a block by WR Kyron Hudson and went down holding his right leg.

Fortunately, it does not sound like Sweat’s injury today will be anything to worry about. He is coming off of a season that saw him record 10.0 sacks, the second-highest single-season total of his career.

Indeed, Sweat is Chicago’s only real proven pass rush threat on the defensive line. As a whole, the Bears’ pass rush lacked consistency in 2026, and the team did little to address the issue this off-season.

Hopefully Sweat can stay healthy all year long, or it will be a very difficult year for the rest of the defensive line.

The Chicago Bears are hoping to improve upon their 11-6 record from a year ago. They won the NFC North for the first time since 2018 and advanced all the way to the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs. This year, they want to be even better.

Of course, these are the goals of every NFL team. In order to even have a chance of coming close to last year’s success, the Bears need to get their players to the start of the regular season healthy.

Unfortunately, that is sometimes easier said than done.

Chicago Bears offensive tackle Braxton Jones left practice with an injury

Safety Coby Bryant, who was signed to a big deal this off-season, was reported to be out for 8-10 weeks due to an injury suffered in practice earlier this week. However, head coach Ben Johnson says they are still in the information gathering phase and stated he did not know where 8-10 weeks came from.

While the jury is still out on Bryant, offensive tackle Braxton Jones left practice in tears on Thursday due to an injury of his own:

The physicality is at its peak this morning. Team periods opened with 9 on 7 run drills. Cannot remember the last time I saw the Bears rep this drill. Old school football.

Fortunately, another reporter that was present at practice says that the initial belief is that Jones did not suffer a long-term injury:

Initial though is that #Bears LT Braxton Jones dodged a significant injury and will be fine. He needs to be checked out more but sounds positive. Jones was emotional after leaving the 1-on-1 pass rushing drill and understandably.

Jones was limited to just six games last year due to injuries. In fact, he has only been healthy for a whole year once in his NFL career, and that was in his rookie season.

The Bears are hopeful that he can compete for and win the starting left tackle job, and hold onto it by staying on the field for a full 17 games.

Hopefully he bounces back from this injury quickly.

Cole Kmet is a consummate professional who continues to do his job well despite seeing his role diminish. He started 2025 as the clear TE1 of the Chicago Bears but played fewer snaps as the season progressed.

The emergence of Colston Loveland as a rising star cut into his playing time, but he remained dedicated to his job. Kmet will likely see fewer targets as the team unleashes the second-year tight end more. The veteran finished last year with 30 receptions for 347 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games, including 15 starts.

Kmet showed that he is still a reliable option for Caleb Williams, particularly in the Divisional Round. He caught the game-tying touchdown on fourth down, but the Bears eventually lost 20-17 in overtime to the Los Angeles Rams.

Bears coach speaks highly of Cole Kmet

Press Taylor praised Kmet on Wednesday.The Chicago offensive coordinator spoke highly of him and highlighted his work ethic.

“Cole is everything that we are about,” Taylor said. “I mean, the way he approaches his work in the meeting room, in the building, just the presence he is. He’s a guy that as we started yesterday and we knew we were going into a live period and it was an unscripted, it was more of a scrimmage type feel. As we broke up as an offense, he’s the guy I call on to make sure he’s addressing the offense just because he sets the tone for us. He’s got the right mindset (and) he’s about the right stuff.

“He can do anything we ask, he can line up at fullback, he can be in line, he can motion out. (Kmet) can play in space, he’s been a great role model for Colston, for Sam (Roush), but also just our entire offense as an entire unit. He’s done a great job.”

Over the course of the 2026 NFL off-season, the Chicago Bears had to revamp most of their defensive secondary. The safety position, in particular, saw all of their key contributors from a year ago depart in free agency. As a result, the Bears used their own vital and limited free agent resources and draft picks to address the position.

Their biggest free agent signing this off-season was former Seattle Seahawks safety Coby Bryant. Last year, he won the Super Bowl with Seattle, and Chicago hopes that he will bring valuable leadership and play-making to a young Bears defense.

Unfortunately, it is not clear when he will be able to be back on the field.

The day that Bryant got hurt, it was reported that he was, unfortunately, going to be out for 8-10 weeks. However, head coach Ben Johnson told reporters today that he has no idea where that information came from. No one in their building has put a timetable on Bryant’s return:

As one can see, Johnson says the team is still in the information gathering stage. To be clear, it was ESPN’s Adam Schefter who reported that Bryant would be out for 8-10 weeks. He claims he got this information from sources inside the Bears organization.

This could be Johnson attempting to deflect questions about the safety position, which is not in good shape with Bryant out. Hopefully, he will be able to return relatively soon.

Either way, Chicago needs to try to shore up the secondary.

Clark and her teammates are in a good position to continue climbing the standings as they now sit in fifth place.

The Fever will play three of their next four games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. They need to get back on track quickly as a five-game road trip follows, including marquee matchups versus the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings. The good news is Clark continues to play despite dealing with a lingering back issue. She is tagged as probable for Thursday against Las Vegas.

Chicago Bears right tackle Darnell Wright is thankful that a new coaching staff came on the scene to help him before an important contract year in 2025.

On Tuesday, Wright signed a four-year $116 million contract extension.

When speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Wright praised Bears offensive line coach Dan Roushar Jr. for teaching him how to play offensive line the right way, unlike some of his coaches in the past.

“I think first, he’s consistent every day in what he does and what he says,” Wright said. “He’s consistent in what he’s telling you. He’s honest and he’s not, you know, some coaches I’ve had in the past or some coaches in the league, you know, they’re not very good teachers.

“They see a guy with talent and blah, blah, blah, but they can’t really convey what it is and teach you. You still need to be taught. So I think he is such a good teacher and he does it with such good, he’s not yelling at you, he’s not screaming at you, he’s not demeaning you, he’s telling you what’s good about the rep and he’s telling you what’s bad about the rep so you can see both sides.”

The “some coaches in the league” seems to be an obvious reference to a former offensive line coach on the Bears. Chris Morgan was former head coach Matt Eberflus’ offensive line coach, and worked with Wright when he first came into the league as a first-round pick in 2023. Morgan is now the offensive line coach in Denver.

Wright appreciates Roushar explains what is good and bad about a rep, allowing him to fix just the issues that need addressing.

“Instead of maybe if you have a coach that tells you just what you did was wrong with the rep so maybe the next rep, you just change everything,” Wright said.

“Now, you have a different result and you have no consistency to stack on top of each other whereas Dan he shows you what you did good with the rep so you can, you know, keep doing the good things and fix the bad things he tells you. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

With a new coaching staff, Wright has been doing more of the good than bad.

The USC product continues to receive praise for the improvements he’s shown in the offseason. His coaches and teammates have reportedly seen his improved leadership, and he is more vocal in commanding the offense. Chicago added proven veterans to surround Williams with more talent and addressed positional needs. The team also drafted Dillon Thieneman to boost the secondary and plug the hole at safety.

Additionally, Williams will have a motivated Darnell Wright protecting him. The offensive tackle signed a historic four-year, $116 million extension and aims to repay the franchise’s trust. His rush protection will be key in giving the 24-year-old more time to scan the field and make the right plays. His experience has also become increasingly useful in a defensive backfield that continues adding younger talent. Rotations happen. Injuries happen. Having someone who already understands the system allows any required adjustments to feel less dramatic.

Chicago will look to sustain its takeaway production while improving other areas of the defense. Hicks alone won’t determine whether that happens, but players with his versatility often help defenses stay organized when games become chaotic.

Few rookies arrive with the kind of versatility Zavion Thomas offers. His speed naturally attracts attention, but it only tells part of the story. Chicago can move him around the formation, involve him in designed touches, or rely on him in the return game while he continues settling into the offense. That flexibility creates opportunities even before his workload increases.

Special teams may provide the quickest route onto the field, though it would hardly be surprising if his offensive role grows as the season unfolds. Players with his athletic profile tend to create possibilities that aren’t always obvious during training camp.

Sometimes depth isn’t measured by numbers. It’s measured by how many different ways a player can help and Thomas gives the Bears another option worth exploring.

Looking Ahead

The Bears aren’t relying on one breakout player or one offseason addition to change their trajectory.

Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston once again led the charge, combining for 71 points, 10 rebounds and 20 assists. However, none of their teammates scored in double digits and they couldn’t stop Olivia Miles and Courtney Williams. The rookie recorded 28 points, four rebounds and six assists, while the veteran produced 27 points, four rebounds and five assists.

Indiana ranks fifth in the standings, but with the regular season far from over, it can position itself better for the playoffs. Clark, Mitchell, Boston and Co. aim for a deeper playoff run and potentially winning the title.

Fever issue positive injury report update

The Fever issued their injury report for the Aces game, including some good news. They listed two of their three-headed monster as probable. Clark continues to fight through a lingering back issue, while Boston deals with a lower leg ailment. However, are expected to be available to face A’ja Wilson and Las Vegas.

Wednesday afternoon saw two of the best teams in the National League, the Chicago Cubs and Los Angles Dodgers, face off against each other. While the two own some of the best records in the NL, the Cubs were going for a series sweep.

Additionally, the game saw the two front-runners for NL MVP, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Shohei Ohtani, lead-off for both teams. Fans at Wrigley Field were sure treated to two spectacular performances.

And a Cubs win.

The game started with Ohtani hitting a solo home run to lead-off the first inning. Then, in the bottom of the first, Crow-Armstrong tied the game 1-1 with a solo shot of his own.

Both players finished 3-5 in the game. Both hit two home runs. Crow-Armstrong had more RBI, though, driving in four runs while Ohtani drove in three.

And Chicago won 7-6.

Many viewed the back-and-forth between the two stars as a battle for supremacy in the NL MVP race. When asked if he felt that he had surpassed the Dodgers star in the race, Crow-Armstrong said, “I would be crazy to say that I don’t want to win an MVP but if we’re talking about having priorities straight, I think mine are pretty straight. It’s not on the forefront of my mind.

“It’s fun to joke about it and it’s fun to acknowledge. And I think it’s absolutely okay to pay attention to, but again, it’s not like following me up to the plate. And yeah, I think if you guys want to talk about all this back and forth, I really should go get in the lab and start pitching. I really should.”

The thing is, though, that Ohtani is not currently pitching due to injuries. What is more, Crow-Armstrong’s defense adds several points to his MLB-leading 7.0 WAR.

If the season were to end today, the Cubs centerfielder might very well be the NL MVP.

The Chicago Bears’ 1985 defense is considered one of the best units of all time in the NFL, but the 1984 defense has one record that has stood for over 40 years.

The Bears created 72 sacks in 1984. A year later, when Chicago won the Super Bowl, the defense recorded 64 sacks. The Vikings came close to tying the Bears in 1989, but finished with 71 sacks. Chicago’s defense in 1987 and the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense in 2022 are tied for the third-most sacks in a season with 70.

The Denver Broncos have the sack record on their mind in training camp. The Broncos recorded 68 sacks in 2025. Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones thinks his squad can earn more than 72.

“We can break it. We can break the record,” Jones said, via NFL Media. “What is that, 72? We can break it.”

The Broncos have one thing on their side that the 1984 Bears didn’t. Chicago only played 16 regular season games in 1984. Denver will play 17 games in 2026.

Jones said the Broncos have the personnel to break the Bears’ sack record.

“We got what it takes,” Jones said. “We’ve tasted it. Now, it’s time to cook the meal, eat it, and take a break.

“You know how you eat a good meal, and you lay down after to take a good nap, and you wake up and go eat again? We’re about to eat again. It’s time. We got the numbers, we got the men, we got the willpower, we’ve got the free will to go do it. So, it’s up to us, and we’ll go do that.”

Unlike the Broncos, the Bears will come into the regular season looking to generate a better pass rush than they did in 2025, when they recorded just 35 sacks. Chicago didn’t add a flashy defensive lineman in the offseason, hoping that better coaching and technique will overcome a talent gap on the front seven.

The Chicago White Sox came out of the MLB trade deadline having addressed every need that they wanted to. At 59-53, Chicago is clinging to a three-game lead in the American League Central Division. It is their hope, obviously, that they are able to hold on and make the postseason this year.

2026 has truly been a surprise for White Sox fans, who did not expect their team to compete for a few more years. Similarly, one particular move they made ahead of the MLB trade deadline took a lot of people by surprise.

One of the trades that Chicago made was for three-time All-Star starting pitcher Luis Castillo. While he does have a good resume, Castillo is having a dismal season this year, and currently is 3-9 with a 5.06 ERA.

Starting pitching remains a concern for the White Sox, and adding a pitcher with an ERA over 5.00 with another year on his contract was a huge question mark for many.

The Chicago Cubs are 66-49 following their sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. As has been the case all week thus far, the two National League powerhouses were propelled by their best players, Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers.

Both players are having stellar seasons, and each are considered a top-two favorite to win the National League MVP Award. Ohtani, of course, was thought to have the inside track because of his pitching. However, one MLB analyst isn’t so sure anymore.

MLB analyst says Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong should be the NL MVP

Entering play on Wednesday, Crow-Armstrong was hitting .284/.384/.535 with 24 home runs, 65 RBI, and 28 RBI. He also led the Majors with 7.0 WAR. In Chicago’s final game in their series against Los Angeles, he was 3-5 with two more home runs and four RBI.

Prior to the game, Jon Morosi of MLB Network stated that he believes the Cubs centerfielder should be the frontrunner for the NL MVP Award:

“As the kids are saying these days, Wrigley is a vibe. It was amazing to be there, I heard the chants, and then I looked at the numbers. I said to myself, ‘What is the argument for PCA to win the MVP in the National League?’

“And as of right now, I will say Pete Crow-Armstrong is the front runner to win the National League MVP.”

Morosi goes on to argue that PCA’s defensive numbers, combined with his offensive numbers, still give him a higher WAR than Ohtani.

And since it is not yet known when or if Ohtani can pitch again this year, PCA may have the upper hand.

Since being drafted by the Chicago Cubs, Ian Happ has been a steady presence both on and off the field. He has won four straight Gold Glove Awards. He also started a popular baseball podcast called The Compound and launched his own coffee brand, Connect Roasters.

But this season has not been kind to him. He is hitting just above .200. In addition, he is batting .184 with runners in scoring position (RISP) so far this season. His offensive performance has drawn ire from frustrated fans, despite his stellar defense.

It looks like the Cubs had enough as well.

The Cubs desperately needed pitching help, and Jed Hoyer was very aggressive in addressing those needs during the MLB trade deadline on Monday. They did acquire outfielder Tyrone Taylor, who came from the New York Mets with pitcher Clayton Holmes.

But the Cubs didn’t just acquire Taylor for depth. Manager Craig Counsell made that clear the moment Taylor was acquired: Ian Happ will not start against left‑handed pitching anymore.

If you look at Happ’s performance between LHP compared to Taylor’s, you can understand Counsell’s decision.

Could this be the beginning of the end for Happ?

For a team fighting to stay afloat in the NL race, Taylor’s addition makes sense. For Happ, he’s losing starts to a newly acquired role player. That has to frustrate him.

This is a seismic shift for Happ, who has been entrenched in left field for years. He has been treated as a lineup fixture regardless of performance. As he heads into free agency after the season, it’s also a blunt acknowledgment of reality. Happ hasn’t been good enough, and the Cubs finally have an alternative who fits what they need.

Taylor isn’t a star, but he’s exactly the type of player the Cubs need at this moment: a right‑handed outfielder who hits lefties and doesn’t shrink in high‑leverage spots. More importantly, Taylor played for Counsell from 2019-2023 in Milwaukee, and hit a career-high 17 home runs in 2022. Taylor is not a stranger to playing in Wrigley Field.

Meanwhile, Happ has been brutal against left‑handed pitching this season. He has struck out 145 times. His at‑bats lack conviction. Counsell didn’t sugarcoat it — Taylor is here to take those matchups.

The message is simple yet blunt: the Cubs are no longer waiting for Happ to turn it around. They’re moving forward with someone who can help them win right now.

For Cubs fans, they are also getting a glimpse into a life after Happ.

The Chicago Cubs were one of the most active teams ahead of the MLB trade deadline. So far, the moves they made have sure paid off as they are on the verge of sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles, of course, landed the biggest name on the trading block this year in two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. The Cubs defeated him on Tuesday night.

Chicago, too, landed a pretty high-profile pitcher themselves. They were able to acquire two-time All-Star starter Kevin Gausman, who will make his Cubs debut on Friday.

So when he was finally dealt to Chicago last weekend, Gausman says that his wife told him: “It’s about time.” He added, “Because just in Baltimore for years, it seemed like it was kind of always a link to here. … Happy that I’m here finally.

“Being a part of a team when they can bring guys in and you know that they’re going for it, it’s almost like a shot of adrenaline and can kind of breathe some life into the team. It doesn’t seem like this team needs it, to be honest, but still excited to be here.”

The two-time All-Star is 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA so far this season, his worst marks in several years. Hopefully a change of scenery will do him good.

Among the heroes of the 5-1 win were second baseman Nico Hoerner and shortstop Dansby Swanson. Both homered in the game, with Swanson actually doing so off Skubal. On the evening, Hoerner went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs while Swanson was 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI.

Tuesday’s performances were actually just part of the continuing upward offensive trajectory for both.

In August alone, the two have combined for a .345 average with three home runs and four RBIs.

But the trend goes back even further. Interestingly enough, both middle infielders turned things around on a previously dreadful offensive season on the exact same date—June 24, in the Cubs’ double header with the New York Mets.

Since that day—a day where Swanson had a historic 11 RBIs—both players have been red-hot.

Hoerner has hit .307 in the 34 games starting with the 24th. He now looks like his usual self, making contact and smartly aggressive in putting the ball in play.

Swanson is hitting .275 since that day, but he also has 8 home runs and 27 RBIs in that run. Prior to that, there was real talk about benching the veteran, whose average was down to .189 before the start of the twin bill in New York.

To their credits, their defense never suffered during the offensive doldrums. They were still contributing. But, of course, bringing their bats along is a big deal for this team with real postseason aspirations.

Coming along at the perfect time

The connection between the double-play partners has been written about before and that synergy makes the simultaneous offensive awakening all the more interesting.

“We just have an understanding of how we want to play the game, how we want to work, and how we want to prepare,” Swanson said of Hoerner earlier in the season. “It makes it very seamless when you have two guys that are cut from the same cloth.”

“His preparation,” Hoerner responded to a question regarding what makes Swanson a special ball player. “He knows himself really well, and he’s definitely got his routine down in the most efficient way you can do it… he’s got it to where he’s able to be at his best every day regardless of how he’s feeling and knowing when to work and when to take a day lighter and manage that so he’s at his best playing. That’s definitely something that I can improve on.”

Whatever the reason, the two have awoken at the absolute perfect time—just as the Cubs are fortifying their roster and making that last push towards the playoffs.

The Chicago Cubs bagged one of the top three or four starting pitchers on the trade deadline wish lists of fans and media when they acquired Clay Holmes from the New York Mets.

It would cost them no. 2 prospect Jefferson Rojas to grab the veteran righty, along with outfielder Tyrone Taylor, but most analysts agree that the deal was a smart one for a Cubs team serious about making a strong postseason run.

On Tuesday, the 33-year-old Holmes talked to media about the move to Chicago and how he’s walked into an absolute perfect fit as a groundball specialist.

“I’m super excited,” Holmes told reporters. “Obviously, there were a lot of things floating out there. You just look at this team, where they’re at, and for me, this defense is probably one of the best places I could have come.

“People around the league, you know the Cubs have got a really good defense. Obviously you see them play and it’s special. A guy like me, that’s what I do. I’m a sinker ball guy and rely on quality of contact. To be able to trust a defense like that and know that’s what you have behind you is a freeing thing.”

“This is a complete team,” Holmes added. “You have the defense, the lineup, the pitching. Just to see the roster, I mean, it’s an exciting group.”

The nine-year veteran has had a unique major league run, transitioning from an elite closer to a high-end starting pitcher over the last two seasons. The one constant, though, is his ability to generate weak contact and get outs. He’s also managed a 55.8 percent groundball rate since becoming a full-time starter.

Holmes, who will soon be activated from the 60-day IL after recovering from a fractured fibula earlier in the season, is reportedly slated to make his Cubs debut in the upcoming Kansas City Royals series.

The move from the jumbled dysfunction of the last place Mets to the surging, likely playoff-bound Cubs has seemingly energized Holmes, who is now even tossing out a bit of World Series talk.

“You want to win your last game,” Holmes said. “You put in all the work, you put in all the preparation, you forge relationships to be a team that wins it at the end. And to know you have a real chance to do that, especially at this point in the season, is energizing.

“I’ve felt it before in my career. I’ve lost a World Series. And there’s that hunger of wanting to be the last team standing.”

Following the Cubs’ deadline haul and after taking the first two games of their series against the back-to-back defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers—one of them against new Dodger Tarik Skubal—a lot of positivity is sprouting up everywhere in Chicago.

Ben Johnson impressed in his first season as the Chicago Bears’ head coach. He guided the team to an NFC North title and it reached the Divisional Round. Players and analysts continue to praise the 40-year-old for his leadership, including Colston Loveland.

Chicago hired Johnson in January 2025. He emerged as one of the top candidates in the coaching cycle following his stint as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator. Johnson had more than 16 years of coaching experience under his belt before joining the Bears.

Loveland, on the other had, was selected at No. 10 overall in 2025. He quickly made a name for himself as a reliable and capable target for Caleb Williams. The former Michigan Wolverines star finished the season with 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns. He is set for a bigger role and is projected to be among the best at his position.

The tight end shared his thoughts about Johnson’s coaching style and work ethic. He highlighted that the second-year head coach shows a lot of dedication to his job.

“We all look at coach Johnson, we’re like, man, you see him in here early getting it in, squatting with heavy weight on his back doing the same list we’re doing,” Loveland said. “And then obviously, his coaching style and everything, he’s just so intense and you know that he works harder than anyone. So we look up to a guy and we’re gonna say, ‘OK, let’s emulate him and let’s do everything he does.”

Johnson, Loveland and the Bears are aiming for a deeper playoff run next season. The team added key pieces in the offseason to address positional needs and bolster the lineup. However, they face a huge challenge with the toughest schedule in the league, but they are ready to confront it head on. Chicago will play seven primetime games which will likely draw even more attention to Loveland and Co.

The Chicago Bears have a couple of notable battles going on in training camp this summer.

While the secondary has a lot of unknowns about who will start in Week 1 amid injuries, most of the serious position battles in training camp are coming in the trenches.

The Bears are trying to sort out the offensive line amid left tackle Ozzy Trapilo’s injury and center Drew Dalman’s surprise retirement, though it appears Garrett Bradbury will start at center in Week 1 while second-round pick Logan Jones learns the position.

Chicago also needs to see someone step up and win the starting defensive end spot opposite Montez Sweat.

Per Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, Jones appears to be winning the battle to start at left tackle. He’s been competing with Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. for the left tackle job.

Austinn Booker, the Bears’ fifth-round pick in 2024, appears to have an early upper hand on Dayo Oedyingbo.

“The Bears seem to be settling in on Braxton Jones as their starting left tackle, as expected,” Lieser wrote. “On the other side of the line, though, Austin Booker is making a strong push to start at defensive end over Dayo Odeyingbo.”

Booker showed progress and promise in his second season when he recorded 35 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 10 games played and nine starts (he missed the beginning of the season due to a knee injury). Still, it would have been optimal for Booker to be a rotational sub this season, while allowing Odeyingbo to be the starter.

The Bears signed Odeyingbo to a three-year, $48 million deal in free agency last year. He made 21 tackles and one sack in eight starts last year before suffering a torn Achilles against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chicago needs its pass rush to be much better this season, and it appears Booker gives the team more of a chance to get to the quarterback than Odeyingbo. The Bears made a questionable move to sign Odeyingbo in free agency last year, and he could lose the starting job in 2026.

Clark and Co. are on a hot streak, winning seven of their last nine outings. However, they came off a loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday which snapped their five-game winning run. The superstar guard dropped a 19-point, 10-assist double-double to support Kelsey Mitchell’s 37 points and six three-pointers.

Olivia Miles spearheaded Minnesota’s attack with 28 points, four rebounds and six assists. Courtney Williams supplied 27 points, four rebounds, and five assists in their 108-100 victory.

Sunday’s game set a new record for ESPN viewership. The Indiana-Minnesota matchup drew an average of 2.5 million viewers and peaked at 3.1 million. Fans tuned in for the teams’ first matchup this season, featuring Clark and Miles, the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award.

The Fever are also featured in the network’s most watched game of the campaign. It was their matchup with the Chicago Sky on May 12, drawing 2.7 million viewers. Their game versus the Dallas Wings on May 9 ranks as the third most-watched with 2.5 million viewers. Meanwhile, the July 12 fixture between Indiana and the Las Vegas Aces saw the highest viewership of any game this season at 2.7 million.

Clark and her team will return to action on Thursday when they host the Aces, and they have a big chance of resetting the record. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.ET, and Amazon Prime Video will broadcast the game live. Indiana aims to get back to its winning ways, while Las Vegas has its sights set on achieving back-to-back victories.

The Chicago Bears defense has been battling the first-team offense with quite a few backups and reserves this summer amid injuries to several starters and backups in the secondary and at linebacker.

Linebackers T.J. Edwards, Kayshaun Elliott, and Noah Sewell have been dealing with injuries. Kyler Gordon has not practiced in training camp while dealing with a soft-tissue injury that kept him out of mandatory minicamp this spring. Coby Bryant is out for the next eight to 10 weeks after suffering a hyperextended knee.

Per the Bears, Edwards has been activated off the non-football injury list. He had been dealing with a calf injury he suffered over the summer break.

With Tremaine Edmunds no longer on the defense, Edwards’ play will be crucial for the Bears this fall. He fractured his fibula in the Bears’ win over the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round. He told reporters this spring that he hoped to be “ready when it’s time to go,” but it’s unclear if he meant training camp or the regular season.

“I don’t want to put a date on it or anything like that,” Edwards said. “Knowing me, I will push as hard as I can to move that as quickly as possible, but I also want to be smart about it too. It is April.

“As hard as it is to not be out there every step of the way right now during phase one, I know I’m on a really good plan with the trainers. I’ll be ready when it’s time to go, for sure.”

Edwards played in 10 games last season as he dealt with another injury. He had surgery to repair a broken hand in November, causing the linebacker to miss four games. He wound up recording 67 tackles, .5 sacks, and two tackles for loss last season.

The Chicago Bears made a big decision about Darnell Wright’s future with the franchise. They signed him to a four-year, $116 million extension on Tuesday, making him the highest-paid right tackle in NFL history.

Wright entered the league as the team’s No. 10 overall pick in 2023. He has appeared in 49 regular-seasons and established himself as one of his unit’s most important players. The 24-year-old took part in 1,074 snaps in 2025, starting 16 games. He will continue to be a cornerstone for Chicago as it aims to win a Super Bowl.

Wright earned second-team All-Pro honors last year. He played through an elbow injury he suffered in Week 3 and missed only one game in three seasons.

In 2025, Caleb Williams emerged as a genuine superstar and the savior that Chicago has been crying out for. He threw for 3,942 yards that regular season, shattering Erik Kramer’s franchise record set in 1995. He added 388 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He was, for long stretches of 2025, exactly what the Bears drafted him to be. But it was his exploits in the playoffs that truly set the Second City alight.

First, he masterminded the greatest comeback in Wild Card round history when he managed to orchestrate 25 points in the fourth quarter to somehow knock off the Green Bay Packers in a miraculous 31-27 win. He then somehow managed to keep his side alive in the Divisional Round against the much-fancied Los Angeles Rams, sprinting back 30 yards on fourth down before delivering a perfectly placed ball to Cole Kmet in the corner of the end zone to force overtime.

But for all his brilliance, he was also, at other moments, a 22-year-old quarterback completing 58.1 percent of his passes, posting a league-low 64.6 on-target percentage, watching 28 dropped passes cost him 404 yards he’ll never get back — and then throwing four touchdowns against five interceptions across two postseason games that ended in that clash against the Rams with the Kamren Curl pick and a drive that never came.

That’s the full picture of Caleb Williams in 2025. Magnificent, maddening, unforgettable — sometimes within the same series of downs. But what do the bookies expect of him and the rest of his NFC North starting quarterback cohorts in 2026? Here are the projected throwing yards for each of them.

Caleb Williams | Chicago Bears | Over/Under 3,600.5 Passing Yards

Online betting sites have proceeded with caution when it comes to Williams. Websites offering sports betting in Canada have set the line at 3600.5, with either side priced at odds of -115. But truth be told, taking the over is the only option.

Last year, he threw for 3,942 yards in a system he’s still learning; in year three, with a full offseason of Johnson’s mechanical emphasis and a roster that’s graduated from project to contender, the natural trajectory points upward. Williams said it himself this spring: “We don’t back down from no challenge.”

But this isn’t just year three in Ben Johnson’s system, with the familiar narrative about quarterbacks making their leap. This is the contract year — the season where Josh Allen’s three-year, $330 million deal hangs in the background of every throw, every decision, every overthrown deep ball that will get dissected in real time on social media by four million Chicagoans with strong opinions. The entire city is deciding this year whether Williams is the real thing or the very convincing version of it.

He’s earned the right to make his case. The franchise record, the comeback, the dual-threat dimension that no Bears quarterback has brought since — well, ever — these aren’t small things. But Johnson has been explicitly public about prioritizing mechanical improvement this offseason, which is the polite way of saying the 64.6 on-target percentage isn’t going to cut it at the next level of this organization’s ambitions, and Williams knows it.

Jared Goff | Detroit Lions | Over/Under 4,100.5 Passing Yards

It’s been five years since Jared Goff was traded out of Los Angeles in a blockbuster deal constructed around someone else’s arrival — Matthew Stafford going west, Goff heading to Detroit, the entire transaction designed to facilitate a Rams Super Bowl run with a different quarterback. And then, quietly, Goff became more productive than the man who replaced him.

Four consecutive seasons above 4,000 passing yards. A 2024 campaign that finished second in the NFL in completion percentage, passing yards, and passer rating, good for an MVP finalist nod. A 2025 season where he completed 68 percent of his passes for 4,564 yards — 34 touchdowns, eight interceptions — while absorbing a career-high 38 sacks and watching his offensive coordinator get stripped of play-calling duties mid-season before departing entirely.

The Lions finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs, which felt like swallowing glass given the talent on that roster. Since then, Detroit hired former Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing to replace John Morton, with Goff himself calling it a “home run hire.”

The 4,100.5 line is the most demanding in the entire league, and it’s correctly calibrated — Goff has cleared 4,000 yards in four straight seasons with weapons like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta at his disposal. From a Chicago perspective, the uncomfortable truth is he’ll likely clear it again.

Jordan Love | Green Bay Packers | Over/Under 3,525.5 Passing Yards

Every year, as a starter, Jordan Love’s raw yardage totals decline, and his passer rating improves. Is he being systematically strangled by a conservative scheme, or is he being deliberately underexposed by a coaching staff that trusts the run game and the defense more than the market does?

In 2023, Love threw for 4,132 yards and 32 touchdowns in a breakout season, promptly penning a then-league-high $220m extension shortly thereafter. In 2025, however, he threw for just 3,381 yards, while his PFF grade increased to 88.5 and ranked fifth among qualified quarterbacks. The Packers reached the playoffs for the third straight year. His coach’s assessment after the Wild Card loss to Chicago was unequivocal: “I thought he played his ass off.”

Green Bay’s collapse last season wasn’t Love’s fault. If anything, it was Lady Luck’s. Micah Parsons, acquired from Dallas in a 2025 blockbuster, tore his ACL late in the season, and the Packers lost every game they played without him.

The blunt league assessment: Love has to put up MVP-caliber numbers until the defense reassembles itself. Tucker Kraft returning from an ACL injury and simplified check-down options give genuine optimism for improvement. Whether Matt LaFleur’s scheme actually lets him loose is the question that makes the 3,525.5 line genuinely interesting.

Kyler Murray | Minnesota Vikings | Over/Under 2,824.5 Passing Yards

Kyler Murray is a former No. 1 overall pick, 28 years old, and the dumpster fire that is the Arizona Cardinals still allowed him to leave for a monstrous cap hit. The divorce was an ugly one, with the Cardinals finally giving up after yet another injury-hit campaign in which the former Heisman winner played just five times and didn’t even clear a thousand yards. Now, however, their loss is Minnesota’s gain, who have snapped him up on a league-minimum deal to compete for a starting berth with JJ McCarthy.

Now he’s in Kevin O’Connell’s QB-friendly scheme with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison on the outside, and the early OTA reports have him with the inside track over McCarthy, with league sources suggesting the competition appeared nearly resolved as early as the first week of June. If healthy and starting, 3,000 yards feels more realistic than 2,800. But “if healthy” is doing an enormous amount of work in every sentence written about Kyler Murray.

On Monday, Angel Reese and the Atlanta team saw their five-game winning streak snap. The Las Vegas Aces defeated them via a 109-87 blowout at State Farm Arena. It was a tough loss, especially for the three-time All-Star as she delivered a strong performance.

Reese finished with 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting, along with 16 rebounds and two assists. Rhyne Howard backed her with 19 points and two assists, but they couldn’t extend their winning run to six games. Atlanta dropped to sixth in the standings with an 18-11 record.

Jackie Young led the defending champions with a triple-double. She registered 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while A’ja Wilson produced 23 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Reese posted an emotional message on X following the defeat. She thanked Atlanta fans for showing up at the venue to support the team and wearing pink. The 24-year-old added that she hopes they continue to cheer for Atlanta.

The LSU product has embraced her “Bayou Barbie” nickname and Mattle recognized her with her own doll. The company honors her for her influence in sports and announced their collaboration on July 24. Over the last two games, the Chicago Cubs have faced a pair of southpaws in the Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation. First, they drew Justin Wrobleski, who saw his ERA jump from 2.88 to 3.31 after the Cubs tagged him with seven earned runs and four home runs allowed. Then, prized trade deadline addition Tarik Skubal took the mound, allowing two earned runs over six innings pitched, but Chicago got the last laugh by a second consecutive game against the National League powerhouse.

That said, missing from the starting lineup in both of those contests was outfielder Ian Happ. The 10 year veteran has had a down year in the batting average department, sitting at just .215 as of August 4, but has maintained a respectable .328 on-base percentage, .413 slugging percentage, and a 105 OPS+ with 18 home runs on the season.

Happ, a switch hitter, owns a career .233/.308/.383 line against southpaws, numbers that are noticeably different compared to when he swings from the other side of the plate. This year, however, those averages are down a lot more than normal, coming in at just .158/232/.298 with just eight extra base hits all year in those situations.

Those numbers are one of the reasons why Jed Hoyer targeted a right-handed-hitting outfielder at the trade deadline. The Cubs filled that role by acquiring Tyrone Taylor, reuniting him with manager Craig Counsell. Furthermore, the club has officially announced that Happ will cede playing time against left-handed pitching for the remainder of the season, with Taylor expected to take on a larger role in those matchups.

During an appearance on The Score Chicago’s Spiegel and Holmes afternoon show, Counsell discussed the acquisition of Taylor and how it will affect the Cubs’ lineup moving forward. Counsell indicated that Happ will see significantly less playing time against left-handed pitching for the remainder of the season.

The primary reason for the change is Taylor’s production against left-handed pitching. The right-handed hitter is slashing .289/.299/.566 against southpaws this season, giving the Cubs a legitimate platoon option in left field. That doesn’t mean Happ’s role will disappear, however. He is still expected to enter games later, depending on the matchup, once the opposing starter has exited and the bullpen takes over.
