Anambra Women Affairs Commissioner, Onyekesi Vows To Expose 8 Men Who Raped

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Anambra State, Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi has wept over the s*xual molestation and exploitation of a teenager in Nawfia by eight men including her guardian.

The teenager, who was severely r*ped by these men is now two months pregnant according to medical report presented by a concerned priest from Nawfia who reported the case to the commissioner.

Onyekesi frowned at the trauma orchestrated by the level of molestation and exploitation the young girl passed through in the hands of the adults who were supposed to protect her.

She assured the safety of the girl and encouraged men to protect women, especially young girls rather than take advantage for the sake of the society.

According to the 16 year-old teenager who was brought to the office of the commissioner, her guardian forces himself on her every night and later others join in that act.

She said with the help of a good Samaritan she was rescued last week from the abuse and some arrests have been made before she was brought to the commissioner's office for safety.

When asked about the wife of her guardian, she said the wife is a stroke patient while her sons and daughters are all grown and some are married.

She informed the commissioner that the police had arrested two persons out of the eight that molested her and others were on the run.

FCT Command Debunks False Alarm Of Alleged Kidnapping Of Students

The FCT Police Command has denied media reports over alleged kidnapping of students at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja today June 4.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said at about 10:30am, officers of the FCT Police Command attached to Nyanya Division received a distress call alleging an ongoing kidnapping incident at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja. Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Nyanya Division, immediately mobilized officers and surveillance teams to the scene.

Adeh stated that preliminary investigations revealed that students had suddenly started shouting “k!dnappers” and running out of the school premises, creating panic among teachers and members of the community. Consequently, the school premises were cordoned off and thoroughly searched by responding officers.

She said following extensive search and questioning of persons within and around the school premises, no k!dnapping incident was established, no suspect was sighted, and no victim was identified. She mentioned that additionally, surrounding hills, boundaries, and adjoining areas were patrolled and searched, while nearby schools were also visited as part of precautionary security measures.

She urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension within communities.

Accord Party Chairman Shot In Osun State

The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation after the Accord Party chairman in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola, was shot by suspected gunmen.

Ajibola was attacked on Wednesday night in the MDS area of Osogbo and is currently receiving treatment at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the incident happened around 9:50pm when two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on the victim.

According to the police, officers responded to a distress call, evacuated Ajibola to a medical facility and immediately launched a manhunt for the attackers.

The police said medical personnel confirmed that Ajibola is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.

Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a high-level investigation into the attack and directed relevant units to identify and arrest those responsible.

The Osun State Government also condemned the incident, calling for a thorough and professional investigation, while noting that the attack appears to have elements of political colouration.

The Management of Lagos State University (LASU) received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph (Matric No. 240341269) of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.

On behalf of the Management, staff, students, and the entire University community, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult and painful time. Available information indicates that the unfortunate incident occurred off campus on the night of Friday, 29th May 2026, when the deceased and his friends were attacked by armed robbers. Upon receiving reports of the incident, the University, through the Acting Dean, Students' Affairs, Dr Abiodun FATAI-ABATAN immediately provided support, escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained contact with relevant medical personnel involved in his treatment. Following the sad news of his passing on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, representatives of the University engaged with his family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and law enforcement authorities. US Govt Deports 110 Nigerians

Four Youth Corpers , Soldiers Die In Auto Crash

Six persons, including members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), were burnt to death following a motor accident that occurred on Wednesday along the Narehi area of the Girei-Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

A statement by the spokesman of the Adamawa Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, said the “unfortunate incident involved a military Gun truck travelling from Gombi towards Yola and a commercial Hummer bus conveying five (5) passengers from Yola to Mubi”.

“Preliminary findings reveal that both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in the commercial bus flipping over and bursting into flames,” Nguroje said.

“Tragically, all five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision,” the statement read in part.

Preliminary identification revealed that four of the deceased were serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State.

They were identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, who are both indigenes of Kaduna State. But the remaining are yet to be identified, the police said.

Police authorities confirm that one military personnel attached to the military vehicle lost his life as a result of the crash.

“The corpses have been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola, while efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining bodies and locate their families,” the police said.

Nguroje quoted the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa as expressing his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the National Youth Service Corps, and all those affected by this tragic incident.

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has said the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, never protested under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Final-year Female University Student Found Dead On Kogi Highway

A final-year female student of the Federal University Lokoja, Sarah Idoko, was found dead along the Lokoja-Abuja Highway in Kogi State, with police commencing efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.

Idoko was found dead on Saturday night near the Crusher area along the Felele axis of Lokoja after she was allegedly dumped by unidentified assailants.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a vehicle stop briefly near the location at about 8pm before speeding away.

Passers-by later discovered the body by the roadside and alerted security authorities.

Initial reports suggested that the deceased was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, after an identity card bearing her name was recovered at the scene.

The card revealed her enrolment in the Higher National Diploma programme in the Department of Office Technology Management for the 2024/2025 academic session.

However, the police later clarified that Sarah was a student of the Federal University Lokoja.

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, disclosed that the investigations were ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and apprehend those responsible.

“The command is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and track down those responsible,” the police commissioner said.

He assured residents that the outcome of the investigation would be made public at the appropriate time and reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased.

Reacting to the development, the Association of Nigerian Female Students, Kogi State Chapter, condemned the killing, describing it as cruel, unfortunate, and unacceptable.

In a statement signed by its state coordinator, Celina James, the association expressed deep sorrow over the death and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The group also urged relevant authorities to strengthen security around campuses and student communities to prevent similar incidents.

“The tragic death of Sarah Ojodomo has once again raised concerns about the safety and security of students and residents along the Felele corridor, a major gateway to Lokoja that has witnessed several security-related incidents in recent years,” the association stated.

Oyo Assembly Rejects Negotiation With Kidnappers Of Ogbomoso School Children, Teachers

The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, rejected suggestions and calls that the state government should negotiate with the bandits who abducted teachers and students during the coordinated attack at Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area of the state on Friday, May 15, 2026.

It, however, called for intensified rescue operations to secure the release of victims abducted during the attack.

This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the lawmaker representing Oriire State Constituency, Johnson Ogundele, during plenary, shortly after the House resumed from the Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) recess.

The motion highlighted growing insecurity in parts of the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

Presenting the motion, Ogundele recounted the May 15 attack on Ahoro-Esienle, Oyo and Yawota communities, where bandits invaded during school hours, killing a teacher, a student and an okada rider, while abducting dozens of students, pupils and teachers.

The lawmaker expressed concern over the recurring attacks in the area, saying “Oriire had witnessed increasing bandit activities since January, including the attack on the National Park Service office at Oloka village, where five forest guards were killed.

“Let me use this period to call on Governor Seyi Makinde for his swift response, deployment of security operatives, rescue efforts and personal visit to the affected communities.

“I want to equally urge the state government to intensify support for security agencies and establish a permanent military base within and around vulnerable communities and forest corridors in the area.”

The Assembly also called on the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the State Universal Basic Education Board to immediately conduct security audits of schools located near forests and border settlements across the state.

It said, “The Assembly also urges the government to expedite the installation of solar-powered security lights, perimeter fencing and CCTV cameras in vulnerable schools and to develop a comprehensive Safe School Emergency Response Protocol for public and private schools across Oyo.

“The Assembly equally rejects suggestions and calls that the State Government should negotiate with the bandits who abducted teachers and students during the coordinated attack at the community in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, on Friday, May 15, 2026.”

Seconding the motion, the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South), renewed calls for the establishment of state police, urging the Federal Government to remove all obstacles delaying its creation.

Adedoyin said the recent rescue operations exposed the challenges conventional security agencies face while navigating dense forests, forcing them to rely heavily on local vigilantes and operatives of the state Western Nigeria Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, to penetrate difficult terrains.

He argued that the security realities confronting states had further justified the need for state police and urged the Federal Government to expedite action on the initiative.

Contributing to the debate, Olubisi Oluranti (Ogbomoso North) commended the efforts of Governor Makinde and security agencies but stressed the need for increased deployment of personnel to vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks.

Also, Gbenga Oyekola (Atiba) blamed part of the security challenge on poor management of the expansive forest reserve owned and maintained by the Federal Government.

He lamented that despite the vast forest stretching across several parts of Oyo State and neighbouring states, security presence within the reserve remained inadequate.

Oyekola further expressed concern that despite reports of mining activities in parts of the forest, including sightings of helicopters landing and departing from the area, adequate security measures had not been put in place to protect residents and legitimate operators.

Also speaking, Babajide Gabriel (Ibadan North II) called for far-reaching structural reforms of Nigeria’s security architecture.

He recalled Makinde’s previous concerns about the limitations faced by governors who are constitutionally regarded as chief security officers of their states but lack direct control over security agencies.

Gabriel appealed to the governor to recruit more personnel into the Amotekun Corps to strengthen local security operations and condemned attempts by some individuals to politicise the insecurity situation for partisan gains.

He urged all stakeholders to approach the challenge collectively, stressing that insecurity had become a national concern requiring unified action.

Dawood Olalere (Ibadan North-West) observed that kidnapping had evolved beyond forest-based criminality and was increasingly affecting urban and semi-urban communities.

He cited the reported abduction of the sister of former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and her two sons earlier on Wednesday as evidence of the widening threat posed by kidnappers.

Olalere called for better equipment and improved weaponry for Amotekun operatives, arguing that personnel armed with locally fabricated weapons could not effectively confront heavily armed criminal gangs operating in forests and remote locations.

The House subsequently adopted several resolutions, including a call on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Defence and relevant agencies, to establish a permanent military base in Oriire LGA.

Lawmakers also urged the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency to provide trauma counselling, psychosocial support and relief materials to affected families, while calling on traditional rulers, community leaders and local government authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering and community policing initiatives.

The Assembly further directed its Committee on Security and Strategy to undertake an oversight visit to Oriire LGA to assess the security situation, engage stakeholders and recommend urgent legislative interventions.

In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, firmly “dismissed calls for the state government to negotiate with terrorists and kidnappers,” warning that “such a move could embolden criminal elements and encourage further attacks.”

While acknowledging the frustration, anxiety and impatience of families whose loved ones remained in captivity, the Speaker urged residents to continue supporting security agencies and the state government in ongoing rescue efforts.

Ogundoyin maintained that negotiating with terrorists would send the wrong signal and potentially strengthen criminal networks, insisting that the focus should remain on sustained security operations, intelligence gathering and coordinated rescue missions aimed at securing the safe release of all victims.

He, therefore, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting measures that would strengthen security across Oyo and prevent a recurrence of attacks on schools and communities.

EFCC Arraigns Abu-Haneefa Oil & Gas MD, Musa Abubakar, Two Others For Alleged N691m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, arraigned the Managing Director of Abu-Haneefa Oil and Gas Ltd, Musa Farouk Abubakar; his company, Abu-Haneefa Oil and Gas Ltd, and one Sandra Chizoba Attoh before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, for fraud.

They were arraigned on amended 15-count charge, bordering on conspiracy to commit fraud, corruption and money laundering to the tune of N691,677,310.00 (Six Hundred and Ninety-one Million, Six Hundred and Seventy-seven Thousand, Three Hundred and Ten Naira).

Count 10 of the charge reads: “That you Musa Farouk Abubakar, being the Managing Director of Abu Haneefa Oil and Gas Ltd on or about 21st July 2025, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court transferred the total sum of N297,000,000 (Two hundred and ninety-seven million Naira) from Abu-Haneefa Oil and Gas Ltd account No.1313378899 with Zenith Bank Plc to account no. 0108910277 of Sandra Chizoba Attoh with Access Bank Nigeria when you reasonably ought to have known that the said money formed part of the proceeds of unlawful act to wit: corruption and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(2)(b) of Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and punishable under Section 18(3) of the same Act.”

Count 11 reads: “That you Musa Farouk Abubakar, sometime in July 2025, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, procured one Sandra Chizoba Attoh to transfer the sum of N262,866,310.00 (Two hundred and sixty-two million, eight hundred and sixty six thousand, three hundred and ten Naira) from her account no. 0108910277 with Access Bank Nigeria Plc to account no. 0003457246 of Mshell Homes Ltd with Taj Bank Ltd for the purchase of property at Kapital Villa Guzape, Abuja when you reasonably ought to have known that the said money formed part of the proceeds of unlawful act to wit: corruption and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 21(c) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and punishable under Section 18(3) of the same Act.”

They pleaded “not guilty,” prompting the prosecution counsel, Rita Ogar to ask the court for a trial date and to remand the defendants in a Correctional Centre, while counsel to the first and second defendant, Ishaka M. Dikko informed the court that he had filed a bail application for the first defendant on May 19, 2026 and asked that he be remanded in EFCC’s custody. “We were served with the counter affidavit on June 1, 2026 but we apply that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the prosecution,” he said.

Counsel for the third defendant, YG Haruna, SAN, also informed the court that he filed an application for his client’s bail on June 1, 2026 and received the prosecution’s counter-affidavit on June 2, 2026.

In opposing the bail applications, the prosecution counsel stated that her team has “overwhelming evidence in the case” and informed the court that the prosecution has filed counter-affidavits to the bail applications through Hayatu Bello. “It is a 20-paragraph affidavit. We attached two exhibits, Exhibit EFCC 1 and EFCC 2.

We have filed a written address and rely on all the issues raised and respectfully urge the court to refuse the applications,” he said.

Having listened to both sides, Justice Egwuatu ordered that the first defendant be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending his counsel’s filing of response to the prosecution’s counter-affidavit, while he admitted the third defendant to bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum.

The two sureties, the judge held, should be residents of Abuja, and must deposit their passport photographs, and have an acceptable means of identification. In addition, they must be property owners, while one of them must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 15, and must deposit his letter of appointment and last promotion with the court.

He adjourned the matter till September 1 and 2, 2026 for trial.

In a new video, the singer explained that she had originally recorded a one-hour, 30-minute prayer session for the kidn@pp£d children, their families, government authorities, security agencies and Nigerians going through pain, but discovered that only a portion of the video was circulated.

According to her, some people felt offended and believed their voices were not heard because of the shortened clip.

Reacting, Alaseyori apologised to anyone who felt overlooked, saying she would never intentionally make anyone feel unseen or unheard.

Court Sentence Four Owo Church Attackers To Death

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four members of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group to death by hanging for their involvement in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.

The convicted individuals — Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza (25), Al Qasim Idris (20), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26), and Abdulhaleem Idris (25) — were found guilty on a nine-count terrorism charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of the Federal Government.

A fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47), was acquitted and discharged after the court found insufficient evidence.

The sister of the former Minister of Power and All Progressives Congress 2027 governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Bayo Adelabu, and her twin children have been kidnapped in Ibadan, the state capital.

An eyewitness said that the incident occurred on Wednesday in the Challenge area of Ibadan South West Local Government Area of the state.

Confirming the incident in a statement, one of the media aides to Adelabu, Femi Awogboro, said, “The family of Adebayo Adelabu, former Minister of Power and leading governorship aspirant of APC in Oyo State, wishes to formally confirm the unfortunate kidnapping of his younger sister, Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, alongside her twin sons, Peter and Paul, in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

“Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, aged 43, was reportedly abducted by armed gunmen at about 7:30 a.m. while on her way to drop her children at school in Ibadan. The abductors also forcefully took away her 12-year-old twin sons, who were with her at the time of the incident.

“Mrs. Adegoke John-Paul is the youngest of the five children of Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aduke Adegoke Adelabu. Until her voluntary retirement last year, she had served meritoriously at both the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian.

“Following her retirement, she relocated to Ibadan with her children while making preparations to eventually join her husband, Mr. John Paul, who had earlier relocated to the United States of America.”

“Mrs. John-Paul, aged 43, was reportedly abducted by armed gunmen at about 7:30 a.m. while on her way to drop her children at school in Ibadan. The abductors also forcefully took away her 12-year-old twin sons, who were with her at the time of the incident.

“Immediately the incident was reported, all relevant security and law enforcement agencies were duly contacted. Two Policemen Arrested For Torturing Boy To Death In Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two officers of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as So-Safe Corps, over the death of a man identified simply as Success, who reportedly died from injuries sustained after the officers allegedly tortured him.

The command’s public relations officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the development in a terse response to an enquiry

Oluseyi disclosed that the officers had been taken into custody following the incident.

“I can confirm that we have the officers involved in custody,” he said.

The incident occurred following an altercation between Success and his mother on Saturday in the Oju-Ore area of Ogun State.

It was reported that Success’s mother informed some So-Safe officers about the matter, who subsequently took him into custody.

However, instead of handing him over to the police, the officers allegedly took him to an uncompleted building where he was severely assaulted.

The victim was said to have later died from injuries sustained during the alleged torture.

A source familiar with the incident alleged that the officers subjected Success to prolonged beating after taking him away from his family residence.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the So-Safe Corps said it was working closely with the police to ensure justice was served.

The spokesperson for the corps, Moruf Adekunle, condemned the actions of the officers, describing them as a violation of the organisation’s operational procedures.

According to him, the officers acted outside the mandate and standard operating procedures of the security outfit.

“The mother called us to intervene, and some of our ad hoc personnel responded. They were expected to report the matter to the appropriate authorities, but unfortunately, they took the law into their own hands.

“Immediately the incident came to our attention, we handed over the first suspect to the Nigerian Police Force and subsequently handed over the second officer for investigation and prosecution.

“The commandant does not condone any form of human rights abuse. We are working in synergy with the police to ensure justice is done,” Adekunle said.

He added that the state commander of the corps, Soji Ganzallo, had consistently warned personnel against human rights violations, unlawful detention and interference in matters beyond their jurisdiction.

The incident has again raised concerns over alleged torture and extrajudicial actions by some security operatives across the country.

In recent years, rights groups and civil society organisations have repeatedly called for greater accountability and stricter sanctions against security personnel found culpable of torture, unlawful detention and other forms of human rights abuses.

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The address will form part of a series of official events lined up by the Federal Government to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, according to the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated on Tuesday to coordinate the nationwide programme.

“The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria,” he said.

The SGF paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993, struggle and particularly to the late MKO Abiola, whose sacrifice and commitment to democracy, he said, led to the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged the Federal Government to give Nigeria’s security chiefs a 90-day ultimatum to eliminate terrorists or resign from office.

He expressed concern over the country’s worsening security situation and called for urgent action against perpetrators of violence.

He said, “When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, we should make it clear to them that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists; they should eliminate their sponsors, no matter how influential they may be.”

Adeboye recalled that a former Nigerian president once issued a similar directive to security chiefs, but said the order was not fully enforced after the deadline elapsed.

He said, “There was a president, unfortunately he’s dead now… who called the service chiefs together and said, I give you three months. Get rid of all these Boko Haram people, or resign.”

He added, “He ran with that advice, but he didn’t follow it through… because he gave the order as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. But security operatives moved fast.”

Adeboye said he later met the late president after the deadline passed, noting that the experience shaped his current recommendation.

He said, “So I went to see him… this time, somehow, the press got to know that I visited him… unfortunately, like I said, he’s not alive now.”

RE: ALLEGED MISUSE OF AUTHORISED ACCESS CREDENTIALS AND UNAUTHORISED DISCLOSURE OF INFORMATION FROM THE COMMISSION’S CONTINUOUS VOTER REGISTRATION (CVR) DATABASE

The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to allegations currently circulating on social media and in some sections of the media regarding the alleged unauthorised access to the Commission's Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database and the subsequent publication of information on a candidate in the recent primaries of a political party in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Commission takes this allegation seriously and has immediately commenced a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

As part of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, authorised INEC Registration Officers were granted controlled access to specific components of the CVR system to enable them register new applicants, process requests for transfer of registration and update voter records where necessary. Such access is restricted to official duties only and is withdrawn at the conclusion of the exercise.

The audit trail from the preliminary investigation has enabled the Commission to identify the user account through which the information was accessed. Accordingly, relevant personnel have been questioned, and all units connected with the incident are cooperating fully with the investigation.

The Commission is also examining all technical, administrative and operational factors associated with the matter in order to establish individual responsibility and determine the circumstances surrounding the use of those credentials and identify any breach of internal access-control protocols before taking appropriate action against anyone involved.

Preliminary findings from the Commission's audit trail so far, however, indicate that there was no external breach of the CVR database, no hacking incident, and no unauthorised external access to the Commission's ICT infrastructure. Rather, the information in question was accessed through valid user credentials assigned to personnel participating in the ongoing CVR exercise but released without authority.

The incident under investigation relates to the retrieval of a specific voter record and does not indicate any compromise of the Commission's broader voter registration infrastructure or the personal data of over 90 million registered voters.

The Commission wishes to state categorically that it takes the security, confidentiality and integrity of voter data with the utmost seriousness and remains committed to transparency, institutional integrity, and the protection of voters' personal information.

Furthermore, the Department of State Services (DSS), on its own accord, has commenced an independent investigation into the matter. The Commission will continue to cooperate fully with all relevant security agencies and will not hesitate to refer any person found culpable for appropriate legal action.

Members of the public and the media are therefore urged to disregard unfounded speculations while investigations remain ongoing. The Commission will continue to keep the public informed of its final findings and any measures taken in response to the incident in due course.

FG Scraps Three-month Terminal Leave For Civil Servants

The federal government has directed ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to immediately discontinue the practice of placing civil servants on what is commonly referred to as a mandatory three-month pre-retirement leave, declaring that such a provision does not exist in the public service rules.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, and addressed to top government officials, including ministers, permanent secretaries, service chiefs, heads of agencies and other senior public sector administrators.

In the circular titled *“Correct Interpretation of Public Service Rule 120243 on Pre-Retirement Activities,” which was obtained in Abuja, the Head of Service said several MDAs had wrongly interpreted the retirement notice period as an automatic leave period, leading to the premature withdrawal of officers from active service.

According to her, the Public Service Rule only requires officers due for retirement to give three months’ notice before their exit date, attend a one-month pre-retirement workshop or seminar, and use the remaining period to regularise service records and pension documentation.

“The so-called ‘mandatory three-month pre-retirement leave’ has no basis in the Public Service Rules,” Walson-Jack stated.

She explained that Rule 120243 establishes three distinct requirements: a notice obligation, attendance at a pre-retirement seminar during the first month, and completion of retirement-related documentation during the remaining two months.

“A retiring officer must give three months’ notice before their effective date of retirement. This is a notice requirement, not a leave entitlement,” the circular stated.

The Head of Service stressed that retiring officers remain public servants throughout the notice period and are expected to continue performing their official duties unless they are attending approved retirement workshops or have been granted leave under existing regulations.

“PSR 120243 does not exempt retiring officers from official duties during the notice period, except where they are attending an approved pre-retirement workshop or seminar, or are otherwise authorised to be absent under extant leave rules,” the circular added.

Consequently, all MDAs have been directed to stop compelling retiring officers to vacate their posts before their official retirement dates.

Under the new directive, ministries and agencies must ensure that retiring officers continue to discharge their responsibilities, participate in approved pre-retirement programmes, and complete all pension and service record reconciliations before leaving service.

The circular further instructed permanent secretaries, directors-general, executive secretaries, chairpersons of statutory agencies and chief executives of government organisations to bring the directive to the attention of all staff and ensure strict compliance.

The clarification is expected to affect thousands of federal civil servants approaching retirement each year.

For decades, many MDAs interpreted the retirement notice period as a form of extended leave, often directing officers to stop reporting for duty once they submitted their retirement notices. In practice, many workers spent the period away from work while awaiting retirement processing.

The Head of Service’s directive seeks to standardise the implementation of the Public Service Rules across government institutions and prevent the loss of manpower arising from the early disengagement of experienced officers.

The government also believes the measure could improve service delivery by ensuring that retiring officers continue contributing their expertise until their official exit dates while simultaneously completing documentation required for pension processing.

Nigeria’s federal civil service retirement framework is governed by the Public Service Rules and the Pension Reform Act.

Under the rules, civil servants retire upon attaining 60 years of age or after 35 years in service, whichever comes first.

Over the years, delays in pension processing and inconsistencies in personnel records have remained major challenges for retiring public servants, prompting government efforts to encourage early documentation and verification of retirement records.

To address these concerns, pre-retirement seminars were introduced to prepare officers for life after service and guide them through pension documentation procedures.

However, differing interpretations of the relevant Public Service Rules across MDAs led to the widespread belief that officers were entitled to a compulsory three-month pre-retirement leave.

The latest circular seeks to end that ambiguity by affirming that the three-month period is primarily a notice and administrative preparation window rather than a period of automatic absence from duty.

Orutugu, who issued a directive during an emergency security meeting with senior police officers and heads of operations at the command headquarters yesterday, stressed that such an attack on security personnel would not be tolerated under his leadership.

“I want you to fish out the attackers and the killers of our officers. I demand immediate action to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.

“I want results. The people of Anambra State must know that the police are fully in charge and ready to protect them,” he said.

Authorities of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, have expelled 365 students for gaining admission into the institution with falsified academic credentials.

The institution’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Yemi Ajibola, disclosed that the affected students, enrolled in various Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, were found to have presented fake National Diploma (ND) results and forged academic transcripts from different institutions to secure admission into the Polytechnic.

According to Ajibola, the expulsion followed a comprehensive verification exercise conducted on the credentials submitted by students during the admission and registration processes.

He noted that the decision underscores the institution’s commitment to sanitising the academic system and reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy against fraudulent practices and other forms of academic misconduct.

A breakdown of the expelled students shows that 156 were from the School of Communication and Information Technology, 117 from the School of Business and Management Studies, 54 from the School of Science and Technology, 36 from the School of Engineering, and two from the School of Environmental Studies.

Abducted Borno Students : Community Accuses FG Of Double Standard

Parents of 42 pupils abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State have accused the Federal Government of neglect, alleging that authorities have shown greater urgency in responding to a similar abduction in Oyo State.

Their complaints come as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s high-powered delegation visited affected communities in Oyo State, where gunmen abducted dozens of pupils and teachers on May 15.

In Borno, suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School on the same day, abducting more than 40 children, including toddlers.

The attackers reportedly used the children as human shields while fleeing on motorcycles, preventing security operatives from opening fire.

Also on May 15, gunmen invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esiele, Oyo State, abducting pupils and teachers. One of the kidnapped teachers was later killed by his captors.

President Tinubu condemned the killing and announced measures to strengthen rescue efforts in Oyo, including the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities.

Speaking on Monday, the councillor representing Mussa Ward, Peter Haruna Waba, said residents felt abandoned and questioned why the Federal Government had not demonstrated similar commitment toward securing the release of the Borno pupils.

“Why should we be treated differently? We are Nigerians, and we voted for the president. The Federal Government should treat the abduction of our children with the same seriousness. Governor Zulum cannot do it alone,” he said.

One of the affected parents, Saleh Bala, said families in Mussa had been left in anguish for more than two weeks without any clear information about the whereabouts of their children.

“We feel abandoned. It is as if our children do not matter. Many of them are between two and five years old, and we have not seen any significant federal intervention aimed at bringing them home,” he said.

The Chairman of the Network of Civil Society Organisations in Borno State, Abubakar Suleiman, also alleged that there had been little federal intervention since the abduction.

He further noted that hundreds of women and children abducted from Ngoshe in recent months were yet to be rescued.

Similarly, the President of the Borno South Youths Alliance Forum, Samaila Kaigama, urged political leaders in the state to intensify efforts to secure federal intervention.

“Over 40 students were kidnapped, yet the only visible response was the presentation of N10 million to traditional rulers in Askira Uba. The affected families want concrete action and the safe return of their children,” he said.

Kaigama said every Nigerian life should receive equal attention regardless of region, warning that perceptions of unequal treatment could deepen feelings of marginalisation.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on President Bola Tinubu to approve the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards for Borno State and dispatch a high-powered Federal Government delegation to the state in response to the growing security challenges in the North East.

Falana, in a statement on Monday, cited the Federal Government’s recent response to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

“In view of the fact that not less than 415 abducted school children and other citizens are in the illegal custody of bandits and terrorists in unknown forests in Borno State, President Tinubu should also dispatch a high-powered federal delegation to visit the state in solidarity with the people.
