Nigeria will not be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after losing out to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in qualification, and a check by our correspondent on Thursday on the U.S. Department of State website further shows that Nigerians—alongside nationals of some other countries—are subject to limited entry into the United States under Presidential Proclamation 10998, a restriction in effect since January 1, 2026.

In February, the Federal Government stated that it was engaging the United States through diplomatic channels to seek Nigeria’s removal from the list of countries affected by Washington’s recent immigrant visa restrictions.

Three months later, there has been no visible change in the status of the policy as the tournament is scheduled to begin on June 11, our correspondent reports.

This means sports writers and football fans may face constraints but can still apply for visas under specified conditions, although eligibility for issuance or admission is not guaranteed, while checks on countries such as Ghana returned different, more detailed travel guidance.

Mashelia Bata, a compliance officer with Zenith Bank Plc, says the bank filed a suspicious transaction report (STR) in respect to the transactions on an account linked to Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice.

The defendants are being tried on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering to the tune of N8.7 billion. They had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to a statement released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the compliance officer was cross-examined by Adebayo Adedeji, counsel to the defendants

Under cross-examination, the witness admitted that the deposits in the account statements complied with the guidelines of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

However, the compliance officer said the bank “had to file a suspicious transaction report” in respect of the deposits.

During the proceedings, Jibrin Okutepa, EFCC counsel, asked the witness to explain the meaning of a suspicious transaction report.

But Adedeji opposed the question, arguing that there is no ambiguity in the term.

Responding, Okutepa said section 215(3) of the Evidence Act did not preclude him from re-examining the witness while urging the court to allow the question for proper explanation.

Joyce Abdulmalik, the presiding judge, overruled the defence and permitted the witness to answer the question.

The witness told the court that when fund deposits come in a repetitive pattern, banks are required to report to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

“Any deposition of funds seen in a pattern or repetitive, you must escalate it to the NFIU,” he said.

After the testimony, the compliance officer was discharged from the witness box, while the judge adjourned the case to May 22 for continuation of trial.

NDLEA Intercepts ₦10.4bn Canadian Loud At Lagos Port

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted a large consignment of Canadian Loud, a high-potency strain of cannabis, weighing 4,173.5 kilogrammes, with a street value of ₦10,433,750,000, at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

The interception followed intelligence gathering, sustained surveillance, and tracking of the container, which was transloaded several times after leaving Toronto, Canada, on March 28.

This was contained in a statement issued by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on Wednesday.

Babafemi said the container housing the illicit drug was conveyed by rail and arrived at the Lagos port on Saturday, May 9.

The Federal Government has announced the official launch of Nigeria’s nationwide Digital Switch Over (DSO) platform on June 17, promising free access to more than 100 television channels, superior picture quality, broader content distribution, and real-time audience measurement for advertisers.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the disclosure on Wednesday during a facility tour of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT). He was accompanied by the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Charles Ebuebu, and other key stakeholders.

Idris described the development as a long-awaited milestone for Nigeria’s broadcasting sector, noting that the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting had finally materialised after several years of delays and unsuccessful attempts.

“I have been grappling with this idea of the DSO for many years. Moving our transmissions from analogue to digital has now happened and is ready to be commissioned by June 17,” the minister said.

He revealed that multiple channels have already been integrated onto the new platform, adding that the digital migration would revolutionise broadcasting, advertising, and television consumption not only in Nigeria but across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The minister highlighted the introduction of advanced scientific audience measurement tools that will provide real-time viewership data.

“Now science is at play. If you are viewing a station, we know who is watching what and how many people are watching. Advertisers can now take informed decisions about the kind of programming Nigerians want to watch across all demographics,” Idris stated.

He commended the collaborative efforts of NIGCOMSAT, the NBC, the Ministry of Communications, and the Ministry of Information, while praising President Bola Tinubu for his support and provision of necessary resources that made the project possible.

Idris contrasted the new initiative with previous DSO attempts, which he said were limited in reach and expensive due to encrypted set-top boxes.

“In the past, the boxes were encrypted and costly. Now this is free. Government has taken off some of those costs on behalf of Nigerians,” he explained.

EFCC Arrests Energy Commission DG Over N500bn Fraud Allegations

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, over alleged money laundering offences.

A source within the anti-graft agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, disclosed on Wednesday that Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja and is currently in the custody of the commission.

According to the source, the alleged fraud involves funds estimated at N500bn.

“We have arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, for money laundering offences. He was arrested and is currently in our custody. The money is to the tune of N500bn,” the official said.

Efforts to get confirmation from the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

What began as an act of trust has ended in grief following the tragic killing of Bishop Chinedu James, allegedly orchestrated by a man employed in his household barely two weeks earlier.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested Nicholas Uchenna, a domestic staff and driver accused of conspiring with kidnappers to abduct and murder the cleric before fleeing with his Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep.

The suspect was apprehended in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State while allegedly attempting to sell the stolen vehicle. Police also arrested his cousin, Uchenna Igwe, who was reportedly contacted to help secure buyers for the SUV.

For many who knew the late Bishop, the development has been both heartbreaking and shocking — a painful reminder of how quickly trust can be betrayed.

According to preliminary police investigations, Nicholas Uchenna had only recently been employed by the late Bishop. Investigators allege that shortly after gaining access to the household, he collaborated with a criminal gang that abducted and eventually killed his employer in Delta State before escaping with the victim’s vehicle.

Police operatives successfully recovered the Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep alongside other items believed to be connected to the crime.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed he was also a victim, alleging that kidnappers held him hostage, threatened his life and family, seized his phone, and forced him to help dispose of the stolen vehicle.

However, investigators say early findings contradicted parts of his account. According to police sources, the suspect was allegedly seen actively negotiating with potential buyers and was found in possession of the vehicle’s original documents. Investigators also discovered that he had lodged in a hotel on the night of the incident before his eventual arrest.

Reacting to the arrest, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu commended the RRS operatives for what he described as a swift, intelligence-driven operation that led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and arrest of the suspects.

The IGP described the incident as “deeply disturbing and a betrayal of trust,” stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to intensifying efforts against kidnapping, violent crimes, and criminal conspiracies across the country.

He also urged Nigerians to exercise caution when hiring domestic staff, emphasizing the importance of proper profiling, background checks, and verification processes before employment.

Meanwhile, the police say investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the criminal gang and fully uncover the circumstances surrounding the Bishop’s murder.

CP ORUTUGU EXPOSES DOMESTIC STAFF WHO ALLEGEDLY MURDERED HIS EMPLOYER, A PENTECOSTAL CHURCH BISHOP, TO SELL THE VICTIM’S PRADO JEEP

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, PhD, today 13th May 2026 exposed and arrested a domestic staff member allegedly involved in the gruesome murder of his employer, a Pentecostal Bishop of End-reconciliation Ministry Asaba, Delta State, and the subsequent attempt to dispose of the victim’s Toyota Prado Jeep in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The breakthrough followed a swift intelligence-led operation by Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, which led to the arrest of the suspect and another individual alleged to be the buyer of the stolen vehicle.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, who served as the Bishop’s driver and domestic staff, allegedly conspired with yet-to-be-identified criminal elements to murder the cleric before fleeing with the victim’s Prado Jeep to Anambra State for sale.

Police Operatives, acting on credible information, tracked and intercepted the suspects in Nkpor, successfully recovered the stolen vehicle, and took them into custody for further interrogation.

Court Jails Buhari's Minister 75 yrs Over N33.8bn Power Fraud

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power under Buhari administration, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years in prison for stealing public funds totalling about N33.8 billion.

Delivering judgment today in a case filed against Maaman by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, the court convicted and sentenced him on all 12 counts of fraud and money laundering charges preferred against him by the commission.

Whereas he was handed seven years each on 10 counts of the charge, the court jailed him for three years and two years on counts four and five of the charge.

Justice Omotosho held that the sentence should run consecutively without the option of fine except on count four which he allowed the payment of N10 million fine.

Furthermore, the court ordered the forfeiture of various foreign currencies that were recovered from the convict, as well as four choice property in Abuja that were traced to him.

It will be recalled that the court had on May 7, convicted the former minister in absentia. Justice Omotosho said he was satisfied that the anti-graft agency had successfully established the former Minister’s culpability beyond reasonable doubt.

He convicted him on all grounds of the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/273/2024. The court found that he made a cash payment of $655,700 (equivalent to N200 million) for landed property in Abuja, without recourse to a financial institution.

He was also found guilty of criminal breach of trust in relation to funds released by the federal government for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant projects.

The court noted that most of the funds were siphoned through Bureau de Change operators (BDCs), who converted the money into foreign currencies and handed it over to the defendant.

Woman Sets Husband, Co-wife, Children Ablaze In Kano

A 28-year-old woman, Firdausi Musa, and her two young children sustained severe burns after her co-wife, Maryam Muhammad, allegedly doused them with petrol and set them ablaze in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.

The incident, which occurred late Monday night at Mai Allo area of Hotoro quarters, has thrown residents into shock, with the suspect currently in police custody at the Mariri Police Division.

The victims, identified as Khadija Ya’u, 7, and Ismail Ya’u, 3, are receiving treatment alongside their mother at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, respectively.

Their father, Malam Saminu, who reportedly sustained burns while trying to rescue them from the fire, is also undergoing treatment.

Speaking on the incident, a younger brother to Firdausi, Buhari Musa Sa’ad, said the family received a distress call around 3am informing them that his sister, her husband and the two children had been set ablaze by her co-wife.

According to him, Firdausi had not spent up to two weeks in the matrimonial home before the incident happened.

“She is around 28 years old. The children who got burned are the ones she brought with her from her previous marriage. They are stepchildren to the husband, who works as a tricycle rider,” he added.

A relative of the victim, Rukayya, said that Firdausi had earlier complained of threats and intimidation from the co-wife before the attack.

“We were lying down here when she was brought in, and she told us herself that it was her co-wife who poured petrol on her and lit a match,” she said.

Rukayya disclosed that the victim had to leave the house earlier that day because of repeated threats, but later returned after intervention by her husband.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

How Fake Job Offer Landed Me In Kidnappers Custody..UNIJOS Graduate

A graduate of University of Jos, John Azi, has recounted his traumatic experience after he was allegedly lured with a fake job offer, abducted and taken to a kidnappers’ camp in Zamfara State.

Azi, who narrated his ordeal at a church in Tudun Wada in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, yesterday, after regaining freedom, said he was kidnapped on April 11, 2026, shortly after travelling from Jos to Zaria in Kaduna State for what he believed was a legitimate job opportunity.

According to him, the suspected kidnappers had repeatedly contacted him on phone, offering him welding work and even sending transport fare to convince him the offer was genuine.

“They kept calling me, asking me to come and work for them. They even sent transport money, so, I believed it was real work,” he said.

Arriving Zaria

Azi explained that on arriving in Zaria, he contacted the individuals, who instructed him to board another motorcycle heading towards a village.

He said although he became suspicious during the journey, he ignored the warning signs because he desperately needed work.

“I started having doubts, but I told myself maybe it was a connection that could help me. I did not know they were kidnappers,” he said.

According to him, moments after arriving at the village, a man approached him claiming to be the person who contacted him for the job.

He was then taken on a motorcycle into a remote forest area where he suddenly noticed another heavily armed man waiting for them.

“I saw a gun I had never seen before in my life. The man told me not to be afraid and claimed the person was a hunter, but deep down I knew something was wrong,” he recounted.

Azi said he was immediately forced to kneel down while the kidnappers searched him, seized his phone, bag, and work tools before handing him strange clothes and a face mask to wear.

According to him, the kidnappers later transported him from Kaduna through Giwa Local Government Area into Zamfara State after several hours of travelling on motorcycles through forests and isolated routes.

“We spent almost six hours moving through the bush on motorcycles. There was no security anywhere,” he said.

He disclosed that upon arriving at the camp, the kidnappers tied his hands and legs and contacted his family, demanding N30 million ransom.

“I gave them my elder brother’s number. They called and demanded N30 million,” he said.

Azi further narrated how he was tortured repeatedly and interrogated about his religion while in captivity.

According to him, the kidnappers accused him of being a Christian and threatened to kill him.

“They were shooting guns everywhere and asking questions. Out of fear, I initially denied being a Christian because I thought they would kill me,” he said.

However, he said after severe beating by the abductors, he eventually confessed his faith.

“While they were beating me, I suddenly shouted ‘Jesus.’ That was when they discovered I was a Christian,” he added.

According to him, the kidnappers thereafter, nicknamed him “Pastor” throughout his stay in captivity.

Azi said constant prayers and faith in God kept him alive during the ordeal.

“The only thing I kept doing was praying and asking God to save me,” he said.

The ransom

He explained that after negotiations, the kidnappers reduced the ransom demand from N30 million to N6 million.

However, even after receiving the money, the abductors allegedly delayed his release and demanded an additional N4 million.

“They started beating me again and said my family should add another N4 million. At that point, I thought I would not survive,” he said.

According to him, support from relatives, friends, and sympathisers eventually helped secure his freedom after several days in captivity.

The UNIJOS graduate said he regained freedom and returned home traumatised but grateful to be alive.

Why We Stormed Uyo Teaching Hospital...EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday alleged that its operatives were attacked and trapped inside the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH, during a visit linked to an ongoing fraud case involving a suspect accused of defrauding multiple microfinance banks in Akwa Ibom State.

The anti-graft agency said the operatives had gone to the hospital to verify a medical report submitted by the suspect, who is under remand by Justice M.A. Onyetunu of the Federal High Court in Uyo, after repeated attempts to obtain clarification from the hospital management reportedly failed.

In a statement by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the Commission accused some members of staff of obstructing lawful enquiries and attacking its officers during the visit.

The EFCC said the suspect is standing trial over alleged fraud involving several microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

According to the Commission, the suspect had presented a medical report which required authentication by the hospital management as part of the investigation.

The agency said it wrote two letters to the hospital management, dated March 11 and April 20, 2026, requesting confirmation of the report, but received no response.

The investigating officer later visited the hospital to follow up on the request personally, but still got no response.

Oyewale said: “As a last resort, operatives of the Commission visited the Chief Medical Director of the hospital on Tuesday to make further enquiries, only to be locked in with a false alarm and subjected to unprovoked attack by misguided staff of the facility who pelted them with stones and other dangerous objects.

“While within the hospital, the CMD reportedly directed that gates of the facility be shut, making it impossible for any lawful enquiry to be made.

“Police authorities in Akwa Ibom State advised the CMD to open the hospital gates to enable the operatives exit the premises peacefully but the entreaties were turned down.”

Despite the tension inside the hospital, the EFCC said its operatives exercised restraint and eventually left the premises without disrupting activities at the facility.

Consequently, the Commission warned public institutions and corporate organisations against obstructing its operations, stressing that cooperation with the agency during investigations is a legal obligation.

“Enquiries bordering on operational engagements of the Commission are lawful.

“It is therefore necessary to remind the public and corporate bodies that they are obligated to cooperate with the agency in such circumstances. Contrary action could be deemed as obstruction, which is criminal with attendant legal consequences,” Oyewale added.

Wike Hosts Body Of Benchers , Promise To Improve Infrastructure At Law School

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday challenged professional bodies in Nigeria to focus less on public criticism and more on attracting tangible development to their institutions and members.

Wike spoke in Abuja while hosting delegates of the Body of Benchers led by its Chairman, Albert Akpomudje, during a courtesy visit at his official residence in Life Camp.

The minister said leaders of professional associations should be remembered for projects and reforms they attracted while in office, rather than for frequent appearances on television criticising government.

“What is leadership all about? At the end of your tenure, what will you say is your legacy?” Wike asked.

“You cannot occupy a position and all you do is criticise government every day. People will ask you: while you had the opportunity, what did you do for your profession?”

He said successive leaders of the Body of Benchers had demonstrated exemplary leadership by consistently seeking government intervention to improve infrastructure and facilities for the legal profession.

“You are not the first chairman of the Body of Benchers, but you came with requests that will improve the institution and open up the area for everybody. That is leadership,” he said.

Wike noted that under the current administration, the annex building of the Body of Benchers was nearing completion and would be delivered by June, while the access road around the Nigerian Law School and EFCC Academy corridor was already 98 per cent completed.

He also approved a new request for an access road to the Body of Benchers annex building, directing relevant officials of the FCT Administration to immediately assess and incorporate the project into ongoing works.

The minister used the occasion to criticise what he described as “destructive criticism” by some professional groups, insisting that constructive engagement with government yields better results.

“Constructive criticism is good, but not the kind where nobody sees anything good in what government is doing,” he stated.

He particularly faulted criticisms surrounding government-built houses for judges, arguing that providing infrastructure and welfare support for judicial officers strengthens institutions rather than compromises them.

“If government provides accommodation for judges, people say they are compromised. But if the same government provides money for judges to provide official accommodation, they won't talk about compromise. Also, when the NBA goes about seeking support from government, nobody talks about compromise,” Wike said.

According to him, professional associations should devote more energy to identifying gaps in their sectors and partnering government to address them.

“If you are president of an association and all you do is attend television programmes to criticise government, that is not enough. What did you attract for your members? What did you improve?” he queried.

Earlier, His Royal Highness Akpomudje commended the FCT Administration for what he described as remarkable infrastructural transformation across Abuja, especially projects benefiting the legal profession.

He said the Body of Benchers was grateful for the completion of its annex building, the ongoing fire service station project and the construction of access roads within the complex.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to strike out a suit seeking to stop him from contesting the 2027 presidential election, citing the plaintiff’s absence from court.

Jonathan’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), made the request before Justice Peter Lifu after the plaintiff, a lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, failed to appear for the scheduled hearing of the case.

Also absent were the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who are listed as the 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively.

Uche told the court that since parties had already joined issues in the matter, the suit ought to be dismissed for lack of diligent prosecution.

He urged the court to either strike out or dismiss the suit and award N5m costs against the plaintiff.

The senior advocate argued that the plaintiff, being a legal practitioner, ought to have properly prosecuted the matter or informed the court of his inability to attend proceedings.

However, Justice Lifu declined the request for dismissal.

The judge observed that there was no evidence before the court to show that hearing notices had been served on INEC and the AGF ahead of Monday’s proceedings.

Justice Lifu said he would rather “bend backwards” one last time to accommodate the absent parties in the interest of justice.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter till May 15 for a definite hearing and ordered that hearing notices be served on the plaintiff as well as the absent defendants.

Jideobi had instituted the suit seeking an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

He is also asking the court to stop INEC from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.

In the suit, the plaintiff asked the court to determine whether, having regard to Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan remains eligible to seek the office of president again.

According to the plaintiff, Jonathan had already exhausted the constitutional limit after completing the tenure of late President Umaru Yar’Adua and subsequently serving a fresh four-year term following the 2011 election victory.

An affidavit filed in support of the suit by Emmanuel Agida stated that Jonathan assumed office as President on May 6, 2010, following Yar’Adua’s death a day earlier.

The deponent said speculations about Jonathan’s possible interest in the 2027 race prompted the filing of the suit.

“The plaintiff believes that the 1st defendant, having completed the unexpired term of late President Yar’Adua and subsequently served a full term after the 2011 election, has exhausted the constitutional limit of two tenures as president,” the affidavit stated.

The plaintiff further contended that unless the court intervenes, a political party might nominate Jonathan in breach of constitutional provisions.

According to the affidavit, if Jonathan contests and wins the election, he would be taking the presidential oath of office for the third time.

Agida maintained that the suit was filed in the public interest to preserve the supremacy of the constitution and protect Nigeria’s constitutional order.

Jonathan had earlier stated that he was still consulting on whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Passengers travelling from the United States to Lagos aboard a Delta Air Lines flight experienced an unexpected journey after the aircraft turned back mid-flight and returned to Atlanta nearly eight hours after departure.

The flight, DL54, departed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday evening en route to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, the plane took off at about 5:42 p.m. EDT and proceeded normally across the Atlantic Ocean.

According to flight tracking data, the aircraft cruised for several hours before the crew initiated a U-turn while over the Atlantic, roughly halfway into the journey.

Delta Air Lines later confirmed that the aircraft returned to Atlanta due to an “operational issue.”

The airline did not disclose the exact nature of the problem, but the decision to head back to its main hub instead of diverting to another airport suggested the issue required attention at Delta’s primary maintenance base, according to observers.

The aircraft landed safely back in Atlanta in the early hours of Sunday after spending approximately seven hours and 48 minutes in the air.

The aircraft involved, a 21-year-old Airbus A330-200 with registration N854NW, remained grounded in Atlanta for inspection after the incident.

Delta was said to have taken a decision to return to the base, against the standard procedure of landing at the nearest airport, in order to be able to tend to the ‘operational issue’ at its maintenance yard.

Industry analyst, Capt. Alex Nwuba, has also weighed in on some technicality in the aviation world, making reference to the recent Lagos-London flight of Air Peace which was aborted after a technical fault was discovered in the aircraft while a replacement was later provided.

Nwuba, President of Aircraft Pilots and Owners’ Association, said a minor technical finding during routine checks on aircraft is of the most ordinary events in commercial aviation.

A supporter of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, Ahmad Saidu, popularly known as Abba, has explained why he held the speaker’s attire during a recent political event in Zaria.

Saidu, who spoke with journalists in Zaria, on Monday, also apologised to the Speaker over the incident which occurred during Abbas’ declaration for re-election at the Mallawa Eid Ground, Zaria.

According to him, he sustained a serious fracture on his right hand in an accident, leaving the hand broken in three different places.

He said he had earlier received treatment at the Traditional Orthopaedic Centre, Likoro, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, before he was referred to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.

Saidu explained that financial difficulties prevented him from continuing with the treatment after support from some individuals stopped.

“We could not continue with the treatment because we cannot afford the medical bills after the support we received stopped,” he said.

He added that after learning the Speaker would attend the declaration event, he decided to go there in the hope of personally appealing for assistance.

“As one of the supporters of the Speaker, I went to the event hoping to seek his help. When I got close to him, I held his gown while trying to show him my fractured hand, but security personnel dragged me away,” he said.

Saidu expressed regret over the development, saying he never intended to embarrass the Speaker publicly.

“If I had known the incident would cause such national embarrassment to the Speaker, I would have preferred to continue living with the pain.

“I am one of his supporters and I appreciate the interventions and assistance he has been rendering to people, which prompted my action,” he added.

Also speaking, the victim’s father, Malam Sa’idu-Ibrahim Abubakar, apologised to the Speaker and alleged that political opponents had exploited the incident to spread false narratives.

The lifeless body of former Jigawa House of Representatives member and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Abba Anas Adamu has been handed over to his family by kidnappers after the payment of ransom.

Anas Adamu, alongside another Jigawa politician, Ali Tukur Gantsa, was abducted while travelling to attend an ADC congress in Abuja. The kidnappers initially demanded N100 million, but later collected N50 million for Gantsa’s release while handing over Anas’s body.

The incident has thrown the Jigawa ADC family and other political stakeholders into mourning, with many describing Anas as a man of the people, a kind-hearted politician with a reputation for integrity.

“They were abducted last Wednesday en route to Abuja from Kano for a political meeting. Abductors took them to a nearby bush in Jere, demanding a ransom of N200 million. After prolonged negotiations, the sum of N50 million was agreed upon,” a family source hints.

Anas, who suffered from asthma and hypertension, had been without his medication for several days, a situation that worsened his condition amid the fear and stress of captivity.

Despite Ali Gantsa’s efforts to reassure him, Anas’s health deteriorated, leading to his death.

The abductors initially withheld this information, but a statement by one of them suggested Anas had died.

An insider revealed that Anas’s driver and son delivered the ransom, after which the abductors released Gantsa and showed Anas’s son his father’s corpse.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the 12-year-jail term passed on one Dauda Sani Haladu for raping his 15-year-old domestic help in Abuja.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) disclosed this in a statement on Monday, May 11, 2026, describing it as a “landmark victory in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV),”

An FCT High Court sitting in Abuja presided over by Hon Justice M.A. Nasir had convicted and sentenced Haladu in 2021.

“On May 8, 2026, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a final judgment affirming the conviction and 12-year prison sentence of a 42-year-old man for the r@pe of his 15-year-old domestic help,” the statement read.

“Following the assault, the convict threatened the victim’s life to ensure her silence.

“Despite the intimidation, the victim eventually confided in a school official, leading to the Agency’s intervention and the subsequent arraignment of the defendant on November 11, 2017, under Section 1(2) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPPA).

“This final judgment serves as a stern reminder that the law is patient but persistent. NAPTIP remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violence, especially against vulnerable domestic workers and children, face the full weight of justice.”
