Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been acquitted of all six bribery charges brought against her in the United Kingdom.

A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty on Wednesday after a 12-week trial that examined allegations of corruption during her tenure as Nigeria’s petroleum minister.

Alison-Madueke, who served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, had consistently denied all the allegations.

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, told the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Maitama, Abuja, that he paid between 50 and 60 percent of the commissions earned by his company from consultancy services rendered to the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, KSIRS, to some officials of the agency.

The witness, who testified as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC's, eighteenth prosecution witness, PW18, made the disclosure before Justice Maryanne Anineh while being led in evidence by the Commission's lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN.

The EFCC is prosecuting Bello alongside Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu on a 16-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving the sum of N110.4 billion.

The witness, who told the court that his companies were involved in information technology, software development, software implementation, marketing and tax automation services, recalled how he came in contact with the EFCC, stating that, "my company had business dealings with the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service. It was in connection with that that my company was invited."

The witness confirmed making statements to the Commission and explained that his company served as a consultant to the KSIRS, providing tax process automation, tax audits and advisory services on tax policy and strategy.

Asked whether the services rendered were free, he answered in the negative, explaining that his company was initially entitled to 15 per cent commission on tax collections exceeding N350 million.

"The agreement was to receive 15 per cent commission on transactions above N350 million. The agreement was later reviewed downward to five per cent because the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, had grown significantly and our operating costs became lower due to automation," he said.

He further identified former KSIRS Chairman, Senator Yakubu Oseni, as one of the officials he dealt with during the consultancy arrangement. Speaking on the disbursement of commissions received by his company, the witness disclosed that between 50 and 60 per cent of the commissions were paid to certain stakeholders.

Asked whether such payments formed part of the consultancy agreement, he replied, "No."

He added that the payments were made through bank transfers and cash transactions, stating that they were carried out based on directives from Senator Oseni through his Personal Assistant, Yusuf Abdulmumuni.

According to him, cash payments were also subsequently made on the instructions of Oseni's successor, Aliyu Nda Salami, through Salami's Personal Assistant, Abdulwahab.

The witness identified Exhibit X1 as the statement of account of Bespoke Business Solution domiciled in Zenith Bank Plc and Exhibit AD1 as the company's Sterling Bank account statement.

He told the court that although the consultancy engagement commenced around 2016 and ended in 2017, the Sterling Bank account statement covered transactions from 2016 to 2022.

The witness further informed the court that one Jami'u Salihu was nominated by Senator Oseni as a signatory to the Bespoke project account maintained with Zenith Bank.

"Jami'u Salihu signs independently from me," he said.

While reviewing transactions contained in Exhibit AD1, K.P confirmed several inflows from the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service and corresponding withdrawals by Jami'u Salihu.

He identified an inflow of N92,444,992.60 on August 9, 2017, followed by withdrawals by Salihu. He also confirmed another inflow of N261,836,882.78 on August 14, 2017, with subsequent withdrawals by the same signatory.

The witness further confirmed transactions totaling N70 million paid to Efab Properties on August 17, 2017, comprising N25 million and N45 million transfers.

However, he stated that he could not determine the property for which the payments were made because they were not initiated by him.

"I wouldn't know which property was paid for because it was not my transaction," he said.

The witness also identified credits totaling about N260 million received on September 11, 2017, and stated that certain payments made to Echis Materials, Quant and Kalaz Ventures Limited were not his transactions but were carried out by Jami'u Salihu.

When asked whether there had been any complaints from the Kogi State Government regarding the performance of his company's obligations under the consultancy arrangement, K.P answered: "No."

During cross-examination by counsel to the first and second defendants, P.B Daudu SAN, the witness disclosed that the other shareholders in his company were M K. and A K.

He maintained that his company satisfactorily executed the services for which it was engaged and confirmed that Jami'u Salihu became a signatory to the company's account following the execution of the necessary account documentation.

The witness also stated that, to the best of his knowledge, Senator Yakubu Oseni, Yusuf Abdulmumuni and Jami'u Salihu were still alive.

Also, the prosecution called its nineteenth witness, PW19, Jamilu Abdullahi, a Bureau de Change operator.

Led in evidence by Pinheiro, the witness identified himself as the owner of E-Traders International Limited, Kunfayakun Global Limited and De-Remita International Limited.

Abdullahi informed the court that he was familiar with Keyless Nature Limited and Ejadams Essence Limited through one of his customers, Abba Adaudu.

He also identified Exhibits AQ, AB2 and AK as statements of account belonging to his companies and his personal account.

The witness further confirmed knowledge of Forza Oil and Gas Limited, Whales Oil and Gas Limited and Alyeshua Solutions Services Limited.

Earlier in the proceedings, the court continued the cross-examination of Prosecution Witness 17, PW17, Shenu Bello Bala, an estate agent and commodity trader.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel, the witness clarified that he was neither related to Ali Bello nor Yahaya Bello and was not from Kogi State.

"I happen to bear the name Bello. Ali Bello is my friend and business partner. I have known him for about 13 to 14 years, somewhere around 2012," he said.

Following his cross-examination by counsel to all the defendants and in the absence of further questions,

PW17 was discharged from the witness box.

Thereafter, Justice Anineh adjourned the matter till October 14, 15, 27 and 28, 2026, for continuation of trial.

“I Didn’t Grab Land, I Built Homes For Judges”...Wike Tells Critics

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has defended his administration’s controversial revocation of undeveloped land allocations in Abuja, insisting that the policy is yielding visible results and strengthening key public institutions.

Speaking during the commissioning of the newly constructed Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Wike said allegations that he was grabbing land for personal interests have been disproved by the projects now standing on reclaimed plots.

According to him, the land used for the judges’ quarters had been allocated to a major construction company over 15 years ago but remained undeveloped until the FCT Administration revoked the allocation and put it to public use.

“Those who accused me of land grabbing can now see that I did not grab any land. We simply took back land that was abandoned for over 15 years and transformed it into infrastructure that serves the judiciary and the Nigerian people,” Wike said.

The commissioning ceremony was performed on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

In a message delivered at the event, President Tinubu described the project as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the welfare, dignity, and independence of the judiciary, stressing that a strong justice system remains critical to national development, economic growth, and good governance.

The event also featured the groundbreaking ceremony for new residential quarters for judges of the National Industrial Court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Wike further announced that the commissioning of judiciary-related infrastructure in the FCT will continue, with the Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters in Katampe scheduled for inauguration next.

IGP Disu Visits Families Of Three Slain Policemen In Zamfara State

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, on Tuesday , 16th June 2026, paid a working visit to Zamfara State where he joined officers, families, and members of the public at the Islamic funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) held in honour of three police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The IGP also visited the Zamfara State Police Command to commiserate with officers and men of the Command and reaffirm the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to combating banditry and other violent crimes across the State.

The Inspector-General was received by senior government officials and security stakeholders, including the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Mallam Abubakar M. Nakwada, who represented the Governor of Zamfara State at the funeral prayers and related engagements.

Addressing officers and men of the Command, the IGP described the fallen officers as courageous personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation while confronting criminal elements threatening the peace and security of Zamfara State. He extended the condolences of the Force Management Team and the entire Nigeria Police Force to the families of the deceased officers and assured that their sacrifice would never be forgotten.

The Inspector-General noted that while the loss was deeply painful, it would only strengthen the resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain ongoing operations against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes. He charged officers to remain focused, resilient, and professional in the discharge of their duties, emphasizing that criminal elements would not be allowed to undermine the determination of security agencies to restore lasting peace across the State.

He commended the Command for its recent operational achievements, including the arrest of criminal suspects, recovery of explosives and other dangerous materials, recovery of stolen motorcycles, rescue of kidnapped victims, and successful operations against armed bandits. He noted that the successes recorded by the Command demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing, operational commitment, and inter-agency collaboration in addressing security challenges.

The IGP assured officers of continued efforts to improve operational capacity, logistics, welfare, and other resources necessary for effective policing. He further emphasized the importance of intelligence-led operations, community partnership, and collaboration with other security agencies in the fight against banditry and other forms of criminality.

Police Arrest Four Suspects Over Death Of 23 Year Old Lady Despite Collecting N2m Ransom From Family

The police in Anambra State have arrested four suspects for the alleged killing of a 23- year-old girl, after reportedly using the victim’s phone to contact her family and demand a ransom of N2 million.

The first suspect in this case was given as Ifechukwu Okechukwu, who is currently in police custody. It is yet to be confirmed if the family made the payment before the victim was killed. However, the girl’s remains were eventually discovered in a shallow grave, where sympathisers assisted in exhuming the body.

In a statement confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder. He commended residents for their vigilance, cooperation and timely information that aid security agents in exposing criminal activities and apprehending offenders.

Ikenga said “the first suspect in custody, Ifechukwu Okechukwu, 33, is being investigated for the alleged murder and secret burial of his 23-year old girlfriend. The case was reported following credible information from concerned members of the public, resulting in the suspect’s arrest.

Police operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have taken over the case and commenced detailed inquiries to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.”

FG Convicts 150 Terrorists Within 48 Hours In Abuja..Lateef Fagbemi

The Federal Government has secured approximately 150 convictions within the first two days of its latest phase of mass terrorism trials, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), disclosed on Tuesday.

Fagbemi made the disclosure while speaking with journalists at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the trials are being conducted simultaneously before 10 judges of the court.

The AGF said the current phase, which commenced on Monday, had already recorded about 160 trials leading to roughly 150 convictions on its first day alone.

“Yesterday, we had about 160 trials. I think about 150 convictions,” Fagbemi told reporters.

He added that proceedings on Tuesday brought approximately 300 cases before the courts, with another 84 cases expected to be concluded before the close of the day.

“Whatever we can do, or wherever we stop today, we’ll continue tomorrow and also on Thursday. So it’s still ongoing,” the minister said.

Fagbemi appealed for patience from members of the public as the exercise continued, stressing that the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to justice, accountability and the rule of law.

On Monday, the AGF had said the ongoing phase marked the fourth round of mass terrorism trials conducted since the inception of the current administration, describing the exercise as a clear signal that the government would not tolerate terrorism in any form.

“The message is clear, direct and straightforward. It is that the present administration is not taking the issue of terrorism with levity. And that is why you see ongoing trials.

“Since the inception of this administration, this is about the fourth phase that we are undertaking. So the message is that let everybody know that terrorism in whatever form or shape will not be tolerated,” Fagbemi added.

The prosecution is being led by the AGF himself, while the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Abubakar, heads the defence team.

Among the judges handling the cases are Justices Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Musa Liman, James Omotosho, Obiora Egwuatu and Ekerete Akpan, with proceedings taking place across several courtrooms simultaneously.

The current phase of trials is expected to run through Thursday, with the overall exercise scheduled to last one week.

The latest phase follows a previous round conducted between April 7 and April 10, during which no fewer than 500 alleged terrorists were tried before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Obi , Kwankwaso, Others To Sign NDC Ant-Defection Pact

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has introduced a strict anti-defection policy requiring all its candidates for elective offices to sign indemnity and affidavit forms committing to vacate their seats if they defect from the party after winning elections.

The policy, unveiled on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, is expected to affect prominent members, including the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other recent entrants into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the signing ceremony attended by some candidates and aspirants, NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the move was aimed at protecting the party’s electoral mandates and strengthening internal discipline.

According to him, the decision was informed by repeated cases of politicians winning elections on party platforms only to defect to rival parties after securing office.

He said, “In our last NEC meeting, a motion was moved, supported, and established that when we take over the government, people elected on the platform of our party must respect the party’s instrument.

“This is not just a party for one man to rise and achieve his ambitions and do anything he likes with the party.

“This is a political party that we desire to groom and hand over to the next generation.”

He said the NDC had observed a trend in which elected officials abandoned the parties that sponsored them for personal or political reasons.

“One thing we have come to observe is that in the present polity, when people contest elections and win under political parties, they become gods.

“And in between the time that they ought to have, they will just use one minor excuse to dump the platform and perhaps go into the ruling party,” he said.

Cleopas cited the experience of the Labour Party after the 2023 elections as justification for the new policy.

“A very typical example that we have all seen in the last three years is the Labour Party, where so many individuals won elections under the platform of the party.

“Now, we are in another election cycle. Go and check their history. How many of the people who won elections under the Labour Party and were inaugurated are still members of the party?

“If all of them had remained, you and I can imagine how the Labour Party could have been today, even if they had not won the presidency. When you see these kinds of things happening, it is expedient that you start to think of how to guide your political parties,” he stated.

The NDC chairman stressed that while membership of the party was voluntary, anyone seeking to contest elections on its platform must agree to abide by its rules.

“If you want to contest the election under the platform of the NDC, you are free to come. Nobody is forcing you. But when you come, you should know that there are certain rules by which we, as a political party, guide our members.

“One of them is that if you contest an election under our platform and win, under no circumstances, as against what is provided for in the 1999 constitution, that you will just wake up to say that I don’t like the NDC again, or I don’t like the face of my national or state chairman. Therefore, now that I am already elected, I am leaving the party,” he said.

He said candidates would be required to sign affidavit and indemnity forms before receiving the party’s ticket.

“If you win, the mandate is owned by the party. If you otherwise choose to leave, go the same way you came and leave what you picked from here.

“That is why we brought our National Legal Adviser and his team to prepare documents that include affidavit and indemnity forms for every candidate in all categories to fill and take the oath,” he stated.

The party’s National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, defended the policy, describing political parties as voluntary associations governed by internal rules accepted by members.

“A political party is just like a club, church or mosque where there are rules and regulations. That is why the 1999 constitution, under Section 222, states that a candidate of a political party is just a mere agent of the party.

“And once a candidate is declared the winner and inaugurated, until the expiration of the tenure upon which that candidate won the election and was inaugurated, the mandate belongs to the political party, not any other.

“So, if you are privileged to win the election after clinching the party ticket, that does not mean the mandate belongs to you,” he said.

Despite the significance of the policy, several prominent party figures, including Obi and Kwankwaso, were absent from the event.

The development is widely seen as an attempt by the NDC to avoid the wave of defections that has weakened several opposition parties in recent years.

Court Dismisses Application By Daughter Of ABC Transport Founder's Daughter To Set Aside Warrant Of Arrest

The Federal High Court, Abuja Division, presided over by Hon. Justice M. G. Umar, in a ruling delivered on 16 June 2026, dismissed an application filed by Ihuoma Julia Nneji seeking to set aside the warrant of arrest previously issued against her.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force had, on 16 April 2025, declared Ms. Nneji wanted over alleged offences of criminal defamation, injurious falsehood, and cyberstalking of Abuja based lawyer Barr. Henry Uzochukwu.

Ms. Nneji, daughter of Chief Frank Nneji, Founder of ABC Transport, had approached the court to vacate the warrant of arrest granted against her in favour of the Inspector General of Police in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/627/25. However, in its ruling, the court found no merit in her application, emphasizing that it could not restrain the police from carrying out its statutory duties. Consequently, the application was dismissed in its entirety.

The latest decision indicates that the warrant of arrest issued and published against Ms. Nneji on 16 April, 2025 remains valid, even as the court has authorized the police to do its job.

The court also ordered that the applicant should consequently submit herself to the police for continuation of the investigation.

It, however, remains to be seen whether Ms. Nneji will voluntarily surrender herself to the authorities in compliance with the subsisting court order.

DCP Khan Salihu Was Never Kidnapped. He Died After Brief Illness ..Police

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that the late Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Khan Salihu, was kidnapped before his d£ath.

"For the avoidance of doubt, DCP Khan Salihu was never kidnapped at any time prior to his d£mise. The report is entirely false, misleading, and a complete fabrication with no basis in fact whatsoever," reads the statement released by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, for the Commissionerof Police Lagos State Police Command.

Explaining how he di£d, the police command said: "The Command wishes to state categorically that prior to his passing, DCP Khan Salihu briefly complained of feeling unwell and was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Sadly, upon arrival, medical doctors confirmed him dead. At no time was he abducted, kidnapped, or involved in any incident remotely connected to criminal activity as falsely portrayed in the publication."

The police demanded a retraction of the reports.

"The Command finds it deeply disturbing and professionally disappointing that such a spurious and unverified story could be published by a recognised media platform without the slightest attempt to verify the information from the appropriate authorities," the statememt reads.

"This represents a serious breach of the fundamental principles of responsible journalism and has unnecessarily misled the public while causing avoidable pain and distress to the family, friends, and professional colleagues of the late senior officer.

"The publication is not only inaccurate but also insensitive, particularly at a time when the Command, family members, and loved ones are mourning the loss of a dedicated and accomplished senior police officer who served the nation with distinction.

"The Lagos State Police Command therefore demands the immediate withdrawal of the false report and urges the media organisation concerned to issue a public correction and apology in the interest of truth, professionalism, and public accountability."

NPF MOURNS THE PASSING OF DCP KHAN SALIHU

The Nigeria Police Force announces with deep regret the passing of Deputy Commissioner of Police Khan Salihu, who until his demise served as the officer in charge of Finance and Administration, Lagos State Police Command. He passed away on Monday, 15th June, 2026, after a brief illness.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, on behalf of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, described the loss as deeply painful. He recalled DCP Khan Salihu as a dedicated, disciplined, and professionally accomplished officer whose administrative acumen, loyalty, and commitment to duty distinguished him throughout his career and significantly enhanced the efficiency of the Lagos State Police Command.

IGP Disu extended heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, and to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, psc, mnips, and the officers and men of the Command. He prayed that Almighty God grant the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and the departed officer eternal rest.

The Nigeria Police Force wishes to state categorically that DCP Khan Salihu was never kidnapped at any time before his demise. Before his passing, he briefly complained of feeling unwell and was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention, where he was sadly confirmed dead on arrival. Reports circulating in certain media outlets alleging that he was kidnapped by suspected criminals before his death are entirely false, misleading, and a complete fabrication with no basis in fact.

The Force finds such reckless and unverified publication deeply disturbing, particularly at a time when his family, colleagues, and the entire Force are in mourning. The Nigeria Police Force demands the immediate withdrawal of the false report and urges the media organisation concerned to issue a public correction and apology in the interest of truth and professional responsibility. Members of the public are advised to disregard such reports entirely and rely only on information released through official channels.

I’ll Negotiate With Bandits Willing To Embrace Peace, Fight Those Who Choose Violence..Peter Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he would negotiate with bandits and other violent groups if they are genuinely willing to embrace peace.

Obi spoke during an interview on BlackBox with Rufai Oseni, where he was asked whether he would negotiate with bandits if elected president.

The former governor of Anambra said his administration would prioritise national unity and engage all groups willing to abandon violence and become part of the country’s rebuilding process.

“In uniting the country, anybody who wants peace, I will talk with him; I will negotiate with him,” Obi said.

“Anybody who wants war, we will go to war.”

The NDC presidential candidate said people who have made mistakes in the past should be given an opportunity to reform if they demonstrate a commitment to peace.

He cited an experience during a visit to a university in the United States where, according to him, many members of the institution’s leadership had previously served prison terms.

“I once visited a university in America where the entire faculty are people who came out of prison,” he said.

“From the dean to the registrar, professors spent years in prison for one offence or the other.

“So, if you say you want to change and be part of this new Nigeria we are talking about, we have reached a point where we have to tell ourselves the truth.”

Obi said his approach to governance would be anchored on inclusion, national cohesion and ensuring that no ethnic group or region feels excluded.

“I will unite the country and secure that nobody is left behind. No tribe is left behind; there would be inclusiveness,” he said.

“We will show love and care for everybody.”

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered a stay of execution of the judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister the African Democratic Congress and four other political parties.

In a unanimous decision on Tuesday, a three-member panel led by Justice A. B. Mohammed condemned Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja for flouting a May 22 order that directed him to suspend proceedings before him, describing his conduct as the gravest form of judicial misconduct.

“The decision of the lower court to proceed with the judgment despite the express order of this court is a brazen violation of the hierarchy of the court and the 1999 Constitution,” the panel held.

The appellate court went further, invoking a Supreme Court precedent to characterise Justice Lifu’s conduct in the harshest terms available to it.

“The decision of the lower court to proceed with the judgment despite the express order of this court is the highest form of judicial impertinence,” the panel declared, adding that the Supreme Court had previously held that a judge who acted in such a manner “is unfit for the bench as it amounts to judicial rascality.”

The court said it had a duty to assert its supervisory authority over lower courts and protect the integrity of the judicial hierarchy.

“Courts are enjoined to protect their integrity.

This court has supervisory authority over the trial court. This court has the duty to invoke its powers in ensuring that its orders are obeyed. The application for stay of execution is hereby granted. The enforcement of the judgment is stayed,” the panel ruled.

Earlier in the proceedings, INEC told the court it was stunned by Justice Lifu’s decision to deliver the judgment, disclosing that the commission only learned of the ruling through media reports rather than any official notification.

INEC’s lead counsel, Mr Haliru Mohammed, told the panel that the commission had been aware of the appellate court’s May 22 order restraining the lower court from delivering the judgment, which had originally been reserved for June 5.

“We were not aware of any notice from the court regarding the delivery of the judgment. We only saw it as breaking news in the media. We therefore do not oppose the application of the appellant to stay the execution of the judgment,” Mohammed submitted.

The commission also aligned itself with the notice of appeal filed by the affected political parties.

Counsel for the ADC, Mr Shuaibu Aruwa, SAN, told the court that Justice Lifu communicated the judgment’s delivery to the party via WhatsApp, a disclosure that drew visible reactions from the bench.

Aruwa described the lower court’s conduct as an invitation to anarchy and urged the appellate court to invoke its disciplinary jurisdiction under Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution to sanction the judge.

“The action of the trial judge calls for swift and extraordinary measures from this court. We have come to the stage where this court should press the reset button,” Aruwa submitted.

“We urge this court to take disciplinary steps by immediately suspending that judgment. This court has the power to protect its own integrity. We pray this court suspends the judgment immediately without further delay,” he added.

The other affected parties also drew the panel’s attention to the June 20 by-elections scheduled across six states, warning that allowing the judgment to stand would trigger serious electoral and constitutional crises nationwide.

The Federal High Court had ordered INEC to deregister the ADC alongside the Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party, holding that the five parties failed to meet the constitutional requirements for continued existence and participation in future elections.

With Tuesday’s appellate court order, the five parties remain registered pending the determination of their appeals.

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), has revealed that some leaders of the pro-democracy movement, including members of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), privately urged him to extend military rule after becoming convinced that he genuinely intended to hand over power to a civilian government in 1999.

In a striking twist to Nigeria’s democratic transition story, Abubakar said the same coalition that fiercely opposed military rule under the late General Sani Abacha later sought additional time for the transition process after realising they were politically unprepared for the return to democratic governance.

The former military ruler made the disclosure in his autobiography, unveiled on Saturday during activities marking his 84th birthday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, many NADECO leaders were initially sceptical of his transition programme, having witnessed repeated broken promises by previous military administrations.

However, once they became convinced that his government was committed to relinquishing power on schedule, some of them approached him seeking an extension.

“Two to three months into my administration, some NADECO members realised that I was sincere about the handover date,” Abubakar recalled.

“They felt they had missed the train and wanted more time to organise themselves politically. They came to me as a group and requested that the transition programme be extended.”

Abubakar said he turned down the request, insisting that he had already made a commitment to Nigerians and the international community to return the country to democratic rule within the stipulated timeframe.

To test the sincerity of their demand, he challenged the NADECO leaders to publicly own it.

“I told them that if they wrote to me and publicly announced that they had requested an extension, I would grant it. But they never did. I knew they would not,” he said.

The former Head of State disclosed that pressure to prolong military rule also came from some foreign leaders who believed his administration had restored stability following Abacha’s death and the easing of political tensions and international sanctions.

However, he maintained that he never considered extending his stay in office because Nigeria had reached a critical point where a return to democratic rule had become inevitable.

“For me, I was not in any way tempted to stay longer in office. By the time I took over, the country was on the edge. There was extreme pressure from NADECO, the G-34 and other political groups for the military to go. Nigeria was at a breaking point,” he said.

Abubakar also revealed that some senior military officers opposed the transfer of power to civilians, but his administration remained determined to honour its pledge to Nigerians.

He argued that prolonged military involvement in governance had weakened professionalism within the armed forces, diverted some of its best officers into political administration and eroded discipline within the ranks.

According to him, military rule had also created distortions in command structures and fostered unhealthy divisions along ethnic, religious and regional lines.

“The military needed to relinquish power. Many people did not realise that the military was the greatest loser in the whole enterprise because most of our best brains were deployed to administer the country while the profession was neglected.

“We needed to go back to where we belong and reprofessionalise the armed forces. The military truly lost out by getting involved in politics,” he said.

Reflecting on the transition process, Abubakar acknowledged that there were challenges, including the decision by South-West political leaders and pro-democracy groups to establish the Alliance for Democracy (AD) rather than join broader national political platforms.

Nevertheless, he maintained that sincerity of purpose and an unwavering commitment to the handover timetable enabled the successful transition that ushered in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic on May 29, 1999.

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Olatunji Disu, says the creation of the state police does not mean abolition of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Disu stated this while addressing personnel of the police force on Monday in Dutse, Jigawa.

He said the clarification was imperative to address concerns among officers and men of the force surrounding the creation of the state police.

The I-G said the legislative development concerning the creation of the state police has generated considerable discussion within policing circles and across the nation in recent weeks.

“I am aware that many officers and men have questions, concerns and in some cases, genuine anxiety about what this development may mean for the future of the Nigeria Police Force, and for your individual careers.

“As your Inspector-General of Police, it is important that I address these concerns directly and provide as much clarity as possible. Let me begin by assuring every officer here today that there is no cause for panic.

“The creation of state police does not mean the abolition of the Nigeria Police Force. It does not mean the cancellation of your rank, the loss of your employment, the forfeiture of your pensions, or the erosion of your accrued rights and benefits. Your future remains protected,” Disu said.

According to Disu, the objective of the reform is to strengthen Nigeria’s overall policing architecture by creating additional policing structures that are closer to the communities they serve, while maintaining a strong national policing institution capable of addressing inter-state, national and transnational security threats.

He said that under the proposed framework, the NPF would evolve into what would be known as the Federal Police Service.

The development, he said, should not be seen as a weakening of the institution, rather a strategic repositioning that would enable the NPF to focus more effectively on its national mandate.

Disu said the structures and capabilities that have made the NPF an indispensable component of Nigeria’s security architecture would remain in place.

“Our zonal and state formations will continue to exist. Our specialised formations and units, including the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, SWAT, the Anti-Bomb Squad, the VCRU, INTERPOL, Cybercrime Unit and other strategic operational assets, will remain critical components of the Federal Police Service.

“These units will continue to provide the specialised capabilities required to address terrorism, organised crime, cyber threats, interstate criminality and other complex security challenges,” he said.

Disu assured that the reform was intended to expand policing opportunities, not diminish them, stressing that no officer would be compelled to leave the Federal Police Service.

He said that any movement of personnel into the state police structure would be facilitated through the Voluntary Transfer Programme (VTP), designed to ensure that officers are able to make informed choices regarding their future careers within the new policing structure.

“The guiding principle behind the VTP is simple: choice, fairness and transparency. Officers who wish to remain within the Federal Police Service will have the opportunity to continue their careers within the federal structure, while those who may wish to serve within emerging State Police Services will be able to indicate their interest through clearly defined processes when the time comes,” he said.

He assured that welfare, professional standing, career progression, pension benefits and legitimate expectations of the personnel would be fully protected throughout the transition.

Disu said that he would continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that every decision taken reflects the best interests of those who have devoted their lives in serving the nation.

“Many of you have devoted decades of your lives to this institution. You have served in difficult terrains, confronted dangerous criminals, and made enormous sacrifices in service to our nation,” he said.

He urged the personnel to remain calm, focused and professional, and not be distracted by rumours, speculation or misinformation.

The I-G also enjoined the personnel to discharge their duties diligently and maintain the high standards expected of them, adding that whatever shape the future architecture of policing will take, professionalism, discipline, integrity and commitment to service are the defining qualities of a successful police officer.

Mr Haruna Yahaya, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa, lauded Disu for the visit, describing it as a clear demonstration of his commitment to effective leadership, professional policing, personnel welfare and operational efficiency within the NPF.

Yahya, who was represented by Abdullahi Wase, said Jigawa has continued to be one of the most peaceful and secure states in the country.

Military Rescue Wife Of Late Gen Rabe Abubakar

Nigerian Army troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have rescued Mrs. Abubakar, wife of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, following a deadly encounter with armed bandits in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Military sources exclusively said that the operation, conducted under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, followed intelligence-led offensives launched in Matazu and adjoining communities after the abduction incident involving the retired senior officer and his family.

According to the sources, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga village during a search-and-rescue operation, forcing the armed group to flee after coming under heavy military pressure.

“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs. Abubakar. She is bleeding, we have given her first aid and are moving her for urgent medical attention,” a military source said.

The source confirmed that the rescued victim was immediately stabilised by troops on the ground before being evacuated to a medical facility for further treatment.

Military authorities said follow-up operations have been intensified in the area, with troops sustaining a coordinated pursuit of fleeing bandits and suspected kingpins believed to be responsible for the attack and earlier abduction.

They added that the ongoing clearance operation under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III will continued until all criminal hideouts are dismantled.

Troops of the Nigerian Army with the support of the Nigerian Air Force have successfully rescued Mrs Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar and former Director Defence Information, who was abducted by bandits alongside her husband a few weeks ago.

The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs Abubakar.

In the course of the encounter, the bandits shot Mrs Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing due to the overwhelming pressure from advancing troops.

Mrs Abubakar was immediately evacuated and is currently receiving medical attention at a military hospital, where she is responding to treatment.

The leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to ensuring her full recovery and is providing all necessary support to her family during this difficult period.

Oyewumi had in Appeal CA/ABJ/CV/569/2026 and suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2025 ordered Justice Peter Lifu to stay further action on the matter until the hearing and determination of the Appeal before it. The hearing for the appeal was scheduled for the 27th of October 2026. That order was dated 22nd of May 2026.

Editor of CKN News, Chris Kehinde-Nwandu, has defended the performance of Nigeria’s judiciary, arguing that the country’s major challenge lies not in the absence of laws but in their implementation.

Chris Kehinde-Nwandu stated this during the June 12 Democracy Day Town Hall edition of Journalist’ Hangout on TVC News, where he assessed the role of key democratic institutions in Nigeria’s democratic journey. HealthNews Reporting

According to him, despite criticisms often directed at the judiciary, the institution has generally performed creditably in many areas of national life.

“We’ve not been doing badly sincerely. Yes, we’ve had our challenges in terms of the kind of judgment that turned out by certain judges and the way we practise our law,” he said.

The media executive maintained that Nigeria possesses sufficient legal frameworks to address most of its governance and societal challenges.

“I’ve always said it time and time again that our problem in Nigeria is not lack of laws. We have enough laws to be able to effectively manage wherever we find ourselves. The problem has been those that have been implementing those laws and that is where the problem is,” Nwandu stated. NigerianPolitics Coverage

He noted that public criticism of judges is often most pronounced in election-related disputes, while many of the judiciary’s successes in other areas receive less attention.

“Most often than not, areas where Nigerians say judges are corrupt is when it comes to electoral matters. That is the fact — electoral matters,” he said.

Chris Nwandu argued that outside election litigation, courts have delivered significant judgments in criminal, civil and other legal matters.

“Go to other issues and you see how judges turn out judgments. You’ll be shocked. There have been so many instances. You talk of capital punishment. You talk of criminal cases. You talk of civil cases and you talk of how judiciary have been perfectly well,” he added.

On governance reforms, the journalist expressed support for a shift from the current presidential system to a parliamentary model, which he believes could reduce the cost of governance.

“I personally still believe that especially our legislative arm of government, a parliamentary system of government might just be good for Nigeria for now,” he said.

Describing the position as his personal opinion, Chris Nwandu also called for a review of the country’s bicameral legislature.

“We should do away with the bicameral legislature as we have presently and we save money,” he stated.

Pastor Harrison Charles of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, Anambra State, has been arrested for allegedly taking 75 married women from their husbands and made them his wives

The social media has been awash with the confessions and accusations of his victims and their relatives who claimed the clergy man sometimes swaps wives with other people’s husbands in his church, or outrightly taking some other people’s wives for himself.

Since the Anambra State government began the crackdown on fake pastors, which led to the arraignment of eight of them last week, many victims of fake pastors have been coming up and narrating their ordeals in the hands of the so-called men of God.

A media aide to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr Ejimofor Opara, in a post on Facebook, said the clergy man was arrested and handed over to the police.

Opara, who said that a joint investigation by the Anambra State Police Command and the state government has commenced, called on anyone who has facts about the pastor to reach the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Prince Ken Emeakayi for testimonies.

He said: “Pastor Harrison Charles, owner of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, was arrested by operatives of Agunechemba following a viral video containing several allegations against him.

“He is currently being investigated by the police, in collaboration with the Anambra State government.

“During his arrest, about eleven babies were found in his home. He claimed to be the father of these eleven babies and that they are from eleven of his wives.

“He also claimed that he does not know the number of wives he has married or the total number of children he has.

“While investigations continue, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, has urged anyone with additional information to report it to the State government.”
