Editor of CKN News, Chris Kehinde-Nwandu, has defended the performance of Nigeria’s judiciary, arguing that the country’s major challenge lies not in the absence of laws but in their implementation.

Chris Kehinde-Nwandu stated this during the June 12 Democracy Day Town Hall edition of Journalist’ Hangout on TVC News, where he assessed the role of key democratic institutions in Nigeria’s democratic journey. HealthNews Reporting

According to him, despite criticisms often directed at the judiciary, the institution has generally performed creditably in many areas of national life.

“We’ve not been doing badly sincerely. Yes, we’ve had our challenges in terms of the kind of judgment that turned out by certain judges and the way we practise our law,” he said.

The media executive maintained that Nigeria possesses sufficient legal frameworks to address most of its governance and societal challenges.

“I’ve always said it time and time again that our problem in Nigeria is not lack of laws. We have enough laws to be able to effectively manage wherever we find ourselves. The problem has been those that have been implementing those laws and that is where the problem is,” Nwandu stated. NigerianPolitics Coverage

He noted that public criticism of judges is often most pronounced in election-related disputes, while many of the judiciary’s successes in other areas receive less attention.

“Most often than not, areas where Nigerians say judges are corrupt is when it comes to electoral matters. That is the fact — electoral matters,” he said.

Chris Nwandu argued that outside election litigation, courts have delivered significant judgments in criminal, civil and other legal matters.

“Go to other issues and you see how judges turn out judgments. You’ll be shocked. There have been so many instances. You talk of capital punishment. You talk of criminal cases. You talk of civil cases and you talk of how judiciary have been perfectly well,” he added.

On governance reforms, the journalist expressed support for a shift from the current presidential system to a parliamentary model, which he believes could reduce the cost of governance.

“I personally still believe that especially our legislative arm of government, a parliamentary system of government might just be good for Nigeria for now,” he said.

Describing the position as his personal opinion, Chris Nwandu also called for a review of the country’s bicameral legislature.

“We should do away with the bicameral legislature as we have presently and we save money,” he stated.

The social media has been awash with the confessions and accusations of his victims and their relatives who claimed the clergy man sometimes swaps wives with other people’s husbands in his church, or outrightly taking some other people’s wives for himself.

Since the Anambra State government began the crackdown on fake pastors, which led to the arraignment of eight of them last week, many victims of fake pastors have been coming up and narrating their ordeals in the hands of the so-called men of God.

A media aide to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr Ejimofor Opara, in a post on Facebook, said the clergy man was arrested and handed over to the police.

Opara, who said that a joint investigation by the Anambra State Police Command and the state government has commenced, called on anyone who has facts about the pastor to reach the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Prince Ken Emeakayi for testimonies.

He said: “Pastor Harrison Charles, owner of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, was arrested by operatives of Agunechemba following a viral video containing several allegations against him.

“He is currently being investigated by the police, in collaboration with the Anambra State government.

“During his arrest, about eleven babies were found in his home. He claimed to be the father of these eleven babies and that they are from eleven of his wives.

“He also claimed that he does not know the number of wives he has married or the total number of children he has.

“While investigations continue, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, has urged anyone with additional information to report it to the State government.”

A 23-year-old man, Ben Wazabanga, has been found guilty of murdering a United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Ayowale Aladejana, and will be sentenced on July 13.

The UK Metropolitan Police disclosed this in a statement on Friday following Wazabanga’s conviction by a jury at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday.

The police said Wazabanga, of Fairfax Road, Bedford, murdered the 26-year-old Nigerian in New Cross, London, after a dispute over money.

According to investigators, extensive CCTV footage, phone analysis and vehicle tracking evidence established that Wazabanga deliberately travelled from Bedford to confront Aladejana before fatally stabbing him.

The statement read, “On Thursday, 11 June, a jury at Southwark Crown Court found Ben Wazabanga, 23, guilty of murdering 26-year-old Ayowale Aladejana.

“Through extensive CCTV and phone analysis, officers were able to build a strong and compelling case. They established that Wazabanga had turned against Aladejana, his former business associate, in a dispute over money.

“Fuelled by anger, he planned to confront him and armed himself with a knife, which he later used to kill Aladejana.”

The police noted that officers were called to a residential address on Monson Road, New Cross, on August 2, 2025, following reports of a stabbing.

It added that emergency responders from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance treated Aladejana at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

“A post-mortem examination took place on Sunday, 3 August, and gave a preliminary cause of death as a stab wound to the chest,” the statement added.

The Metropolitan Police further explained that investigators swiftly reviewed CCTV footage in the area and identified a vehicle that had been parked outside the victim’s home before fleeing the scene.

According to the police, armed officers later intercepted the vehicle near Waterloo Bridge in central London and arrested Wazabanga after he allegedly attempted to flee while carrying a knife.

The statement added that Automatic Number Plate Recognition data showed that the convict drove approximately 50 miles from Bedford to New Cross to confront Aladejana, while phone records revealed his grievance against the victim and his plans before the attack.

Commenting on the conviction, the lead investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, described the killing as a calculated and avoidable act of violence.

“This was a calculated and brutal attack, with Wazabanga driving a considerable distance to accost Aladejana at his home and cause him harm.

“Both the responding officers and subsequent detectives worked tirelessly, examining CCTV and phone data, to piece together the timeline that led to Aladejana’s death

“This was a truly tragic and avoidable incident. We established that Wazabanga alone used the knife to kill Aladejana, and I hope that today’s conviction will bring Aladejana’s loved ones a measure of comfort as they continue to grieve his loss,” Card said.

The police stated that Wazabanga would be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, July 13.

Reports had it that Aladejana’s killing is one of several cases involving Nigerians who have lost their lives in violent incidents in the United Kingdom.

In June 2026, our correspondent reported that a Congolese national, Benjamin Katabana, was convicted of murdering UK-based Nigerian student Uchenna Okirie, popularly known as “Uche”, following a fatal stabbing at a shared accommodation in Norwich, England.

Oyo Kidnap: Gov Bala Mohammed Visits Makinde, Calls For Security Overhaul

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State.

Mohammed made the call during a visit to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan, where he sympathised with the government and people of the state over the kidnap incident in Oriire Local Government Area.

One of the sons of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd), Isyaka Rabe, has said his father had no history of diabetes or high blood pressure, contrary to claims attributed to the Katsina State Government.

In an interview with Deutsche Welle on Sunday, Isyaka said reports suggesting that his father died of diabetes were inaccurate.

He also said some people believed the late general may have died from a snake bite, based on a video reportedly released by kidnappers.

However, he said only God knows the actual cause of his father’s death.

“I truly don’t believe it was diabetes. In our view, it was a heart attack. If you look at it, his legs were restrained. Moreover, some people said that he was walking, and he didn’t die, so God knows, since only God is the knower,” he said.

While praying for the repose of his father’s soul, Isyaka described him as a deeply religious, peace-loving man who lived a simple life.

He added that the late general died a hero.

When asked how the family received his father’s remains, Isyaka said he had no information on the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the body.

“When I announced the time for my father’s funeral prayer, many people began asking how the body was recovered. I told them I did not know and that they should direct such questions to the government,” he said.

Isyaka also disclosed that his mother, who was abducted alongside his father, remains in captivity, dismissing reports circulating on social media that she had been released.

“Whoever says she (mother) has been released, I, Isyaka Rabe, son of Major General Rabe, I say that is a lie; she has not been released. Right now, she is still in their custody,” he said.

Late General Abubakar’s abduction was announced on May 30. He was kidnapped alongside his wife.

On June 6, the bandits demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations as conditions for the couple’s freedom.

The demands were conveyed in a four-minute video released by the kidnappers, showing Abubakar and his wife appealing to the Katsina State Government for the release of three detained fighters and the return of the livestock.

But on Saturday, the government confirmed Abubakar’s death, describing it as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.

The government said the late general died from complications of diabetes and hypertension.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the death, while the Defence Headquarters pledged to intensify operations to bring those responsible and other criminal elements across the country to justice.

Woman Beheaded In Abuja, Corpse Found In Uncompleted Building

Bwari community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was thrown into shock on Saturday after the body of an unidentified middle-aged woman was discovered beheaded inside an uncompleted building.

The gruesome discovery was reportedly made after residents noticed a foul odour emanating from the abandoned structure, prompting them to investigate.

They subsequently found the decomposing body and alerted other members of the community.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim was believed to have been killed about two days earlier, judging by the state of the body.

“The offensive smell coming from the building attracted the attention of people living nearby. When we entered the building, we found the woman’s body without her head,” the resident said.

Another resident alleged that evidence at the scene suggested the woman may have been overpowered before she was killed.

According to him, a blanket believed to have been used to transport the body and ropes found around it indicated that her hands and legs might have been tied.

“We could not identify the woman because her head was missing. There was rope around her body, and it appeared she struggled before she was killed,” he said.

The resident added that the body had swollen considerably, suggesting that the victim might have died several days earlier.

He also claimed that bruises observed on her hands and legs could indicate she resisted her attackers.

Describing the incident as horrifying, he expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the area.

“It was terrible. Insecurity is getting out of hand. We are worried about the safety of our families and children,” he said.

Another resident, Ibrahim Dogo, said bloodstains were visible inside one of the rooms of the uncompleted building where the body was found.

He also claimed that a blood-soaked blanket was recovered from the scene.

He speculated that the woman may have been lured to the building before being attacked, although this has not been confirmed by authorities.

Police officers from the Bwari Divisional Police Headquarters later evacuated the body from the scene.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the division received a distress call from a resident on Saturday afternoon informing them of the discovery.

According to the officer, the body was taken to Bwari General Hospital, while investigations have commenced to establish the identity of the victim and circumstances surrounding her death.

NDLEA Intercepts Businessman With 6.10kg Cocaine Starched In Shirts, Towels From Brazil

A 41-year-old Sao Paulo Brazil based businessman, Abugu Oliver Ikechukwu has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for importing shirts and towels impregnated with 6.10 kilograms of liquid cocaine from the South American country into Nigeria.

Abugu was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos upon arrival from Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia aboard an Ethiopian Airways flight on Thursday 11th June 2026. A thorough search of his luggage led to the recovery of 14 towels and shirts, all soaked in liquid cocaine, dried and well ironed.

In his statement, the suspect claims he has lived for over 14 years in Brazil where he runs an African restaurant. He added that he was in Nigeria to see his wife and buy food stuff in bulk for his restaurant.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old woman Chidimma Sunday and a 28-year-old man Abubakar Usman, both persons living with disability have been taken into NDLEA custody in Abia and Rivers state respectively following their involvement in illicit drug trade. While Chidimma was nabbed with 1.8kg skunk by Umuosu vigilante group in Umuna Autonomous community, Isialangwa North LGA Abia state and handed over to NDLEA on Wednesday 10th June, Abubakar was arrested at Rumuokoro Port Harcourt Rivers state with 400 grams of skunk, 5 grams of methamphetamine, 100 grams of tramadol, 5 grams of swinol and 18 grams of diazepam during a raid by NDLEA officers on Tuesday 9th June.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday credited former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), with playing a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s democratic future by resisting pressures to prolong military rule and instead overseeing a swift transition to civilian government.

Jonathan said Abdulsalami’s decision to relinquish power after just 11 months in office, despite mounting pressure from influential interests within the military establishment, remains one of the most significant acts of statesmanship in Nigeria’s contemporary history.

Speaking at the public presentation of three books in honour of Abdulsalami as part of activities marking his 84th birthday in Abuja, the former president described the retired general as one of the architects of Nigeria’s democratic stability.

He said the former Head of State’s conduct underscored the essence of true leadership, which he described as service, sacrifice and dedication to the collective good rather than the pursuit of personal ambition.

“At a defining moment in our nation’s history, he demonstrated uncommon courage and selflessness by guiding Nigeria through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance and renewed hope in the future of our country,” he said.

Drawing a contrast with leaders who succumb to pressure from political associates and beneficiaries of power, Jonathan recalled that some leaders had abandoned plans to leave office because of influences from those around them, often with adverse consequences.

Without mentioning names, he said Abdulsalami stood out for honouring his commitment to democratic transition despite possessing the means to remain in power.

“We must commend Abdulsalami Abubakar. When the time came to leave office, he left. That decision helped shape the democratic stability we enjoy today,” Jonathan said.

The former president further described Abdulsalami as a statesman whose influence has transcended his tenure in office, noting that his enduring legacy is rooted in humility, patriotism and unwavering commitment to national service.

He commended the former Head of State’s continued contributions to peace and democracy through the National Peace Committee, which has become a critical platform for promoting peaceful elections, dialogue and national cohesion.

“Beyond his tenure in office, General Abdulsalami has remained a steadfast advocate of peace, dialogue, national unity and democratic stability,” Jonathan said.

“Through the National Peace Committee, he has continued to promote peaceful elections, conflict resolution and nation-building initiatives across the country.”

Jonathan also highlighted Abdulsalami’s interventions in peacebuilding efforts across the African continent, particularly in conflict resolution initiatives in Sudan and other countries.

He described the unveiling of the three books as a significant contribution to preserving Nigeria’s history and documenting lessons in leadership, governance and nation-building for future generations.

According to him, the publications would provide future Nigerians with valuable insights into the life, military career and public service of one of the country’s most respected elder statesmen.

“As we celebrate General Abdulsalami today, we are reminded that nations are built not only by policies and institutions but also by the character of those who lead them,” he said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday disclosed that former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), was in the final stages of securing the release of the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, before his sudden death in detention.

Obasanjo made the revelation at the public presentation of three books in honour of Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday, titled “The Legacy of a Statesman @84,” held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Paying tribute to the former military ruler, Obasanjo described Abdulsalami as “a soldier, a gentleman, a patriot, a nationalist and a peacemaker” whose leadership helped steer Nigeria through one of the most uncertain periods in its history following the death of General Sani Abacha in June 1998.

He said Abdulsalami successfully managed the political turbulence that followed Abacha’s demise, taking decisive steps that included the release of political detainees and efforts to free Abiola, whose incarceration had become a symbol of the struggle for democracy.

“You sagaciously managed the seeming confusion and uncertainty that followed Abacha’s death. You emerged from the cloud and carefully proceeded to untangle the nation,” Obasanjo said.

“Political prisoners were released, and I was one of them. As has been said by the President of the Senate, the National Assembly is a beneficiary of that process.

“Your next move was how to get MKO Abiola released. You kept me regularly informed and also conveyed messages to the family.

“Kola was already in Abuja to pick up his father when the unexpected happened. I remember you telling me on the telephone, ‘our man is dead.'”

Obasanjo credited Abdulsalami with laying the foundation for Nigeria’s current democratic order by ensuring a swift transition from military rule to civilian governance.

“Within less than one year of your assumption of office, democracy was restored in Nigeria,” he said.

Commenting on his death, a retired Brigadier-General, Bashir Adewinbi, said Abubakar’s death sent a “very bad message to the international community” about Nigeria’s security situation, warning that it reflects a country where citizens may be forced to defend themselves.

“It is a very bad message to the international community, particularly about the security situation of this country. As it is now everybody, not only retired generals, but everybody should defend themselves by any means,” he said.

Adewinbi described the incident as “very unfortunate” and “pathetic,” adding that it was unacceptable that a retired senior officer who served the country ended up dead in captivity.

“This is how Nigeria is treating retired generals who fought to defend this country, to protect territorial integrity, just got killed by chickens and died in captivity,” he said.

He called for a total review of the country’s security architecture, urging greater use of technology and coordinated efforts among stakeholders to tackle insecurity.

Also commenting, Brigadier-General John Sura (rted.) described the incident as unfortunate, saying it underscored the vulnerability of all Nigerians, regardless of status.

“It is just an unfortunate incident. It could have been me, and it could have been any general. If this country can abandon somebody to the insurgents or the terrorists, it means even a senator, a governor, or any other person can fall prey,” he said.

Sura warned that such situations create doubts about state commitment to protecting both serving and retired officers.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters has pledged to intensify operations to bring those responsible and other criminal elements across the country to justice.

In a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, the military described the late general’s death as a tragic loss and vowed not to relent in its efforts to dismantle terrorist and criminal networks threatening national security.

The military disclosed that it had deliberately refrained from making public comments on the abduction while efforts to secure his release were ongoing.

The DHQ noted that security operations had already been intensified in response to the growing wave of abductions across the country, including that of the late general.

Also, former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, described Abubakar’s death as a national tragedy, warning that the incident reflects the deepening security crisis confronting the country.

Mark, a retired Brigadier General of the Nigerian Army, expressed grief over the death of the former Director of Defence Information, saying the development raises serious concerns about the safety of citizens across the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser, Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark described the death of the retired General as a national tragedy.

“The death of Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity is not only a personal loss to his family and the military community but also a national tragedy. It raises serious concerns about the safety and security of every Nigerian citizen,” Mark said.

Tears flowed on Saturday evening as family members, friends, military officers, government officials and sympathisers bid a final farewell to retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, whose death in bandits’ captivity has reignited public outrage over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

The late senior military officer was laid to rest at about 6:00 p.m. at the Gidan Dawa Cemetery, located opposite his residence in Katsina metropolis, following funeral prayers attended by a large crowd of mourners.

Among those present were top government officials, security chiefs, senior military officers, traditional title holders, political associates, family members and well-wishers who gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.

The burial came amid growing concerns over the persistent wave of banditry and kidnappings across northern Nigeria, with many Nigerians describing the tragedy as a stark reminder of the country’s security challenges.

For many mourners at the burial ground, the late general’s tragic end symbolises the painful reality facing thousands of Nigerians who remain vulnerable to criminal attacks despite ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the country.

According to them, his death has intensified calls for urgent and decisive measures to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes that continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across northern Nigeria.

General Abubakar was on his way to his hometown when he was abducted alongside his wife along the Katsina–Matazu road on May 30, 2026.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Katsina State, Nasiru Mu’azu, said the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

Reacting to the development, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) in a statement strongly rejected any suggestion that the retired general died a natural death, arguing that his demise was directly linked to the prevailing insecurity in the country.

“There is nothing natural about dying in the hands of bandits,” Charanchi said.

“A man abducted from his home or along the road and held captive by criminals did not die a natural death—he died because the state failed in its most sacred responsibility: protecting the lives and property of its citizens,” he stated.

Charanchi said the death of a retired Major General while in captivity raises serious questions about the safety of ordinary Nigerians.

“When even a retired major general can be kidnapped and perish in captivity, what hope remains for ordinary Nigerians? This tragedy is a damning indictment of the worsening insecurity ravaging our nation. No amount of official wording can whitewash this painful reality,” he stated.

According to the CNG leader, the incident underscores what he described as the collapse of security and the inability of authorities to adequately guarantee the safety of citizens.

However, Charanchi offered prayers for the repose of the late officer’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

He also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and urged leaders at all levels to confront insecurity with sincerity, courage and determination.

“We pray that Allah blesses Nigeria with sincere, courageous and compassionate leaders who will confront insecurity with honesty, determination and unwavering commitment, so that no family will have to endure such a tragedy again,” he added.

“During his arrest, about eleven babies were found in his home. He claims to be the father of these eleven babies, stating they are from eleven of his wives,” he stated.

Operatives attached to Idiroko Division of the Ogun State Police Command, led by CSP Adejuwon Ariyo, the Divisional Police Officer, have foiled a cross-border vehicle trafficking attempt and arrested two suspects, Seun Lawal ‘M’, aged 46 years, and Ademola Oriyomi ‘M’, aged 38 years, over a conspiracy involving a company driver and his guarantor to smuggle a 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus, earlier declared stolen from Lagos, into the Benin Republic for illegal disposal.

The operation was based on credible intelligence received at about 11:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026, indicating that the suspects had positioned the said vehicle at Babaloke area of Idiroko and were preparing to move it across the international border under false pretence.

Acting swiftly on the information, CSP Adejuwon Ariyo mobilised and led a surveillance team to the location, where operatives intercepted the suspects in the course of executing the cross-border movement. In a decisive tactical response, the operatives demobilised the vehicle by shooting one of its tyres, effectively immobilising it and preventing its escape across the border.

The prompt intervention led to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of the stolen 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Seun Lawal, a driver, conspired with Ademola Oriyomi, his guarantor, to steal and sell the vehicle in the Benin Republic. The suspects admitted that the proceeds were intended to facilitate their relocation after the illegal transaction.

The suspects are currently in custody while investigation continues to uncover possible links to broader cross-border vehicle theft syndicates.

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, says only God can ultimately bring an end to Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.

Nigeria is witnessing a resurgence of insecurity, with killings and abductions across parts of the country, including recent incidents in Oyo and Borno, between May 15 and 17

It had been reported how gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and abducted 39 students and seven teachers.

In Borno, armed groups attacked schools in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area, abducting 42 pupils.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Matawalle said insecurity remains a national challenge that requires collective efforts from both security agencies and citizens to overcome.

He urged Nigerians to support security agencies and pray for peace while warning politicians against exploiting the situation for political gain.

“It’s disheartening, and we must all rise to ensure that security agencies and Nigerians work together to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate based on political affiliation or religion. It can affect anyone.

“That is why we have urged the opposition to stop using insecurity to incite people. It is a challenge that can happen to anyone, and no Nigerian is happy about it. Unfortunately, some members of the opposition appear pleased with the situation. They do not care about the people. What matters to them is portraying the government as a failure for their own political interests and deceiving people into believing they alone can end insecurity.

“It is only God that can bring to an end to this insecurity, alongside our collective prayers and efforts. It should not be used as a tool to condemn others or score political points.” he said.

According to him, old and misleading videos were being circulated on social media by some people to suggest the failure of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Noting that insecurity is not an isolated case with Nigeria, Matawalle assured that security operatives are working round the clock to crush terrorists unleashing attacks in parts of the country.

“There are fake and recycled videos being circulated, some dating back to the Jonathan administration and others from countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, yet they are being presented as incidents that occurred under this administration. That is not true.

“Our security operatives are working tirelessly across the country. We have directed them to decisively with terrorists, but this is not a challenge that can disappear overnight. Even some of the world’s powerful nations have battled insecurity for years and are still confronting it.

Major General Abubakar Rabe (rtd) who was abducted in Katsina State exactly two weeks ago is dead.

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in captivity of bandits.

The government, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, on Saturday, revealed that the retired military officer died from complications of diabetes and hypertension.

The state government described the incident as unfortunate, noting that the death of the former military officer is a significant loss to both Katsina State and the country at large.

“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.

The government further stated that the abduction and eventual death of the retired officer had dealt a painful blow not only to his family and the people of Katsina State but also to the nation.

We Can Protect South West With Juju.. Traditional Rulers

On Friday, May 15 2026, scores of terrorists riding on motorcycles came in broad daylight when pupils of Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School as well as students of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo state were already in the classrooms. In an operation that didn’t last long but claimed the life of a teacher, the terrorists abducted 39 pupils and students including toddlers and seven of their teachers and herded them into the forest. While in captivity, the terrorists slaughtered one of the male teachers and one of the pupils was said to have died. The remaining abductees are still being held in the forest almost one month after without being rescued. This has caused great concern and anguish among the residents especially in the South West region in the country provoking protests and strikes by the teachers.

Expressing concern over the spate of insecurity in the region, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, last Sunday at the grand finale of the 2026 Ifa festival, described the abduction as painful and unacceptable. He therefore tasked traditional rulers across Yorubaland to deploy their ancestral powers to fight the terrorists.

He said, “We must bring together our traditional powers, spiritual heritage, and communal values to chase bandits, kidnappers, and all criminal elements out of Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole. Our ancestors stood for justice, peace, and communal harmony, and we must invoke those values at this critical time.

We must rise collectively against the menace of banditry and kidnapping. Enough is enough. Our people deserve to live in peace and move freely without fear.

Traditional rulers must take greater responsibility in safeguarding their communities while supporting the efforts of the government and security agencies”.

However, some residents dismissed the claim of ancestral powers by the Ooni of Ife. They argued that such powers have no place in this modern day of AK 47 rifles and atomic bombs and wondered why such powers have not been deployed when terrorists have for several years been operating from the forests in Yorubaland.

Rising to the challenge, Yoruba traditionalists and monarchs agreed with the Ooni of Ife insisting that they had their potent traditional powers to protect their land and that they were ready to do so. They said all they needed however was for the government to give them the necessary support.

According to them, the resort to the use of traditional powers in this modern day of technology and Artificial Intelligence was because of their helplessness in the face of insecurity that has ravaged their land.

They lamented that as armed herders were destroying their farmlands with impunity, their people were being abducted for huge ransom and in some cases killed by the terrorists while the government they look up to, to discharge its responsibilities of protecting them has demonstrated it’s incapable of doing so.

They therefore have no choice than to go back to the old ways of protecting their communities as handed over to them by their forefathers.

We can capture the terrorists with their AK-47—Oba Ilori-Faboro

The Olojudo of Ido and former Chairman, Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro, said, “traditional spiritual means could be used to tackle insecurity and such powers remain effective when properly applied. Our native means are very potent and effective for people who know how to use it and where to do the original thing.

“Spiritual powers still exist among some Yoruba people, and that is why those unscrupulous herders are afraid of Yoruba land. It is not all about guns. Our people have been capturing them even with their AK-47. Our forefathers deployed these powers to protect their communities from invaders but unfortunately we have allowed foreign religions to demonize our way of life.

“People who still have these powers are using it and they are protected. It is something that we have to invest in and encourage the people who have the power to exercise it and use it to protect Yorubaland.

“However, it is not everybody who has access to those spiritual powers for protection. Babalawo is not a business for everybody, it is for the initiated. Three Obas were attacked sometime ago by kidnappers, they were the Olumojo, Elesun and Alara. But Alara escaped. How did he escape? So, it is not everybody who has access to such means. Some people also decided to abandon such powers and embraced their new belief. So everybody will rely on what he has”

It’s possible to protect our forest without firing a gun — Elebuibon

A traditionalist, Ogundeji ¸lebuìbÍn in his response said “it is very possible and doable to protect the vast forest across the southwest without shooting a gun. The potent traditional means of doing so is still very active and available. However, who will go into the forest without government clearance, which is the reason we are advocating that governors in the southwest should convene a security summit to discuss alternative means of ensuring security of our forest.

“There is the need for a holistic discussion with traditionalists and others who possess the ancestral means of protecting Yorubaland. It has been done before and it is possible again. We just need the government to show the will and give us the necessary support. The summit can be held under the auspices of traditional authorities who know everyone in their domain with the wherewithal to resolve the crisis in the country and particularly in Yorubaland.

“There were times in the region that local guards would just go to their place of work in the evening, prepare some charms and return and no one dared to steal after the guards must have left such places. These things are still available but there must be a kind of collaboration and authority given to those who will embark on such adventures to start using them.

“When traditional rulers assumed authority, they usually funded the preparation of such items, but now every person is on his own and those in government do not want to believe in such things or provide a budget for it believing it is not scientific”.

Our ancestral power is real, effective and we’re determined to deploy it — Deji of Akureland

Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo who spoke through his media manager, Michael Adeyeye said that, “the position of the Ooni is sacrosanct and we are not leaving any stone unturned in this respect of deploying our ancestral power to chase out terrorists from our domains.

“However, you know all these efforts are not what we will bring to the full glare of the public for open discussion. We are in an era when most people have lost faith in our ancestral powers and the viability of what our ancestors left for us.

“I can tell you that in the real sense of it, these ancestral powers are still effective and real but we must also exercise caution while deploying them. The powers have their own rules and application mode as well. As effective as they could be, there are other factors that will be considered in invoking our ancestral powers for defence.

“We are having our meeting to consider most of these suggestions by many people on the need to consider using our traditional weapons in defending our people. However, we will do this within the ambit of the law and ensure that no one is hiding under such to perpetrate any evil or illegality.

“You can imagine that some of our people can misuse the powers within their reach for other things which can cause damage in the long term. These are the reasons we must carry out such activities in a way that will not have any bandwagon effect. You will see that we are working with some of our Vigilantes within our community in this respect. We are hopeful that the results of these efforts will be visible in no distant time”.

Only desperate measures can fix a desperate situation — Ekiti Council of Elders

Also, Elder Niyi Ajibulu, General Secretary of the Ekiti Council of Elders, said, “I appreciate Ooni for giving such timely advice. But most importantly, we should sensitize everybody to be vigilant. It is the responsibility of government to protect lives and property and now that the government is failing in its primary duty of protecting the citizenry, that is why the Ooni, the other Obas, elders and everybody are calling for a return to our old ways of protecting our communities in order to complement government effort.

“We have been having reports to confirm the efficacy of these traditional powers. Those who know the usage and efficacy of these powers are still alive and can still be consulted to deploy them for the protection of our people in the Southwest. The Southwest’s worsening insecurity is deeply troubling, which appeared to have overwhelmed the government. Only desperate measures can fix a desperate situation, including deployment of traditional means, through the traditional hunters and Babalawos

“The truth of the matter is that this problem is escalating by the day. There was a time we had a lull and we thought that it was going down, then there was a push back by the insurgents in the South West region. Look at the case of Eda-Oniyo now, where we have almost 16 people in the bush for over a month. Also, besides the traditional power, everybody including market women, hunters and farmers should play their role”.

We’re ready to use the powers to defend our land — Oodua Security Network

A traditionalist and commander of Oodua Security Network (OSN), Olayemi Victor Egbeola, said the Yoruba ethnic group has the power to confront bandits and other forms of criminality in the Southwest geo-political zone. Egbeola agreed with Ooni of Ife, Oba Eniitan Ogunwusi, that the ethnic group has the power to confront the invaders troubling the peace of the zone and the country.

His words, “There is such power in Yorubaland here. But we cannot use it because of the way the governments are doing things. There are rules by the government and we cannot flout them. That is why we, the Yorubas, fold our arms to look at what is going to happen. Let all our traditional rulers permit us to deploy our ancestral powers. We are ready to use the powers to defend our land. We are ready to put the power to use once we have the permission of the necessary government agencies.”

Such powers should complement, not substitute effort of security agencies — International Council for Ifa Religion

On his part, Chief Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode, President of the International Council for Ifa Religion said: “The statement by the Ooni of Ife should be understood within the context of Yoruba traditional spirituality and the historic responsibility of traditional institutions to promote peace, justice and security within their communities.

“However, it is important to clarify that ancestral powers, as understood in the Yoruba worldview, are not magical instruments to be deployed as one would deploy conventional security forces. The Yoruba tradition teaches that spiritual forces work in conjunction with human responsibility, righteous leadership, truth, justice and collective action. Therefore, when traditional rulers are called upon to invoke ancestral support against terrorism and criminality, such a call should be seen as a complementary effort to the work of security agencies, governments and communities, not as a substitute for them.

“Those who ask why such powers have not previously eliminated kidnapping, banditry or terrorism raise a legitimate question. The reality is that traditional spirituality has never claimed to absolve society of its duty to maintain vigilance, good governance and effective law enforcement. Spiritual interventions are most effective when there is alignment between moral conduct, communal unity and practical security measures. It is also worth noting that traditional rulers do not possess unilateral authority over every individual operating within forests and remote territories. Criminality is a complex challenge driven by social, economic, political and security factors. To suggest that spiritual measures alone can eradicate such threats would be an oversimplification of a serious national problem.

“As custodians of Yoruba spiritual heritage, we believe that prayers, rituals and ancestral invocations can strengthen the moral and spiritual resolve of communities. Nevertheless, lasting security requires collaboration among traditional institutions, religious bodies, security agencies, governments and citizens alike. The focus should therefore not be on questioning whether ancestral powers exist, but on how all stakeholders can work together, each within their sphere of responsibility, to restore safety, peace and prosperity across Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole.”

Govts not ready to share burden or credit for security outcomes — Yoruba Commitment Forum

For Otunba Tayo Onayemi, Convener of the Yoruba Commitment Forum, “the issue is not necessarily whether ancestral powers exist, but whether such matters should be publicly proclaimed by a paramount traditional ruler. The public nature of the call raises important questions about the image, harmony and authority of traditional institutions.

“With due respect to His Imperial Majesty, I take exception to the public nature of this call. Is it necessary to make a public declaration on a matter of this nature? Historically, has this been the accepted practice among Yoruba traditional rulers? Security remains a sensitive issue requiring strategic engagement rather than public pronouncements. When last was a comprehensive meeting of Yoruba traditional rulers convened to deliberate on pressing issues affecting the region?

“Beyond the issue of procedure, there are also constitutional limitations surrounding traditional intervention in security matters. Government institutions may be reluctant to openly endorse spiritual approaches to combating crime because such measures fall outside the legal framework of state security operations.

“The deployment of ancestral powers to combat crime is not recognized within Nigeria’s constitutional framework. Governments are generally protective of their constitutional responsibilities and may not wish to share either the burden or the credit for security outcomes with institutions that have no formally defined role. Yet, traditional approaches should not be entirely dismissed. I believe that invoking ancestral powers in support of efforts to address insecurity is not entirely out of place. If such interventions are embraced by practitioners and adherents, they could complement conventional security efforts.

“The absence of such initiatives in the past could be attributed to a combination of government reluctance and disunity among traditional rulers, who are expected to serve as custodians of ancestral values and heritage. Also, not all traditional rulers today actively engage in preserving and promoting the traditional values and practices of their ancestors as many have become adherents of foreign religions and belief systems”.

We have capacity to confront insecurity with our traditional powers — Community leader

A community leader Mr. Niyi Rotimi, contended that the debate goes beyond security and touches on the gradual erosion of Yoruba cultural identity. According to him, “the Yoruba people have increasingly distanced themselves from their indigenous beliefs and traditional value systems, largely due to the influence of imported religions. We have abandoned much of our cultural heritage and traditional belief system. The indigenous spirituality historically played a significant role in governance, warfare, hunting and community protection. In pre-colonial times, kings, hunters and warriors routinely consulted Ifa before embarking on major undertakings.

“Through divination, guidance was sought on the safest paths, potential dangers and strategies for confronting enemies. There are traditional beliefs surrounding spiritual forces such as Sango, associated with thunder and lightning; Iji, representing wind; Oyin, symbolising bees; and Ojo, representing rain. Other spiritual concepts involve confusion, memory loss and internal discord among adversaries. Traditionalists also reference spiritual institutions and forces such as Egbe, Isiju and Kanako as part of the broader indigenous system of protection and guidance. Many adherents believe these traditional systems possess the capacity to address contemporary challenges, including insecurity.

“The Ooni’s call represents a reminder to traditional rulers to reconnect with the spiritual responsibilities historically associated with their offices as many traditional institutions have become disconnected from the systems they were established to uphold.

“Yoruba society still possesses the cultural resources to confront insecurity through traditional means but there must be unity, coordination and leadership from key traditional figures. The capacity is still there. What is required is coordinated leadership, unity among traditional institutions and a deliberate effort to mobilize stakeholders across Yorubaland.”

‘I Was Locked Inside A Room After Abacha Died’ ..Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar

Abdulsalami Abubakar has revealed the dramatic events surrounding the death of Sani Abacha in 1998, following which he became Nigeria’s new head of state.

In his autobiography, ‘Call of Duty’, to be unveiled today in Abuja to mark his 84th birthday, the retired general wrote that he was deceived that Abacha wanted to see him on the morning of June 8, 1998.

But on getting to the Presidential Villa, he was locked up in a room for over one hour without any explanations — until the late Ibrahim Coomassie, then inspector-general of police, came to open the door.

‘THEY SAID ABACHA WANTED TO SEE ME’

He wrote: “On Monday, 8 June, I received a call very early in the morning that he (Abacha) wanted to see me. I quietly prayed that he would not send me to Togo where there was going to be an ECOWAS summit. I was tired of going everywhere.

“By this time, Lt-General Diya, his No 2, was in detention (over an alleged coup plot). I was effectively the No 2 man in government and I was always representing him at events. I told my wife I was not happy with the call because I didn’t want to travel to Togo. I told my orderly to pack my travelling bag and other personal effects.

“As I entered the bathroom, there was another call. I was told again that the Head of State wanted to see me. Out of frustration, I asked if I was travelling to Togo and the caller replied that it was on another issue. Because of the urgency, I didn’t wear my uniform. I wore a tracksuit and slippers and proceeded to the Presidential Villa.

“On getting to his residence, I was told he was in the office. I wondered why he would be that early in the office. As I was climbing the stairs, one of the guards informed me that Abacha said I should stay in the waiting room. What struck me was that anytime I went to see him, regardless of who was with him, I would still go in.”

‘IGP BROKE THE NEWS OF ABACHA’S DEATH TO ME’

Abdulsalami was in the waiting room for a while and felt something was not right.

“After waiting for about half an hour, I reasoned that it was odd. Major-General Ishaya Bamaiyi joined me shortly after. We waited for about an hour. I decided to go and see Abacha by any means because I could not understand why I should be kept that long. To my greatest surprise, the door of the waiting room had been locked. I asked Bamaiyi if he was aware that we had been locked inside. Something kept telling me that something was wrong but I could not place a finger on it,” he said.

“After some time, the door was opened and the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, came in. He said: ‘Let’s go.’ We walked towards the residence and I informed him that I was told Abacha was at the office. It was at this stage that he informed me that Abacha was dead. I was shocked. I asked him what happened and he insisted we proceed first. He did not tell me anything else.

“When we got to the residence, I asked to see Abacha’s body. I was told it was inside. I entered the room and removed the covering. I was in shock at the sudden development. I prayed for him and left the room.”

Abdulsalami did not reveal who ordered the door of the waiting room to be locked but insinuated that some military officers had “other plans” as events unfolded.

Later in the day, Abdulsalami was named Abacha’s successor after a vote by the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC).

He organised a very short transition programmed and went on to hand over to a democratically elected government, led by President Olusegun Obasanjo, in May 1999.

Obi said that if elected President, his administration would prioritize engagement, consultation, and peaceful conflict resolution in addressing issues of national concern, including separatist agitations and regional discontent.

According to him, governments achieve more lasting results when they address the root causes of agitations through dialogue, justice, and inclusive governance rather than relying solely on coercive measures.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that national unity is better strengthened through reconciliation and mutual understanding, stressing that democratic societies should create avenues for citizens to express grievances while preserving law, order, and national stability

Obi also argued that sensitive national issues require political courage and statesmanship, noting that leaders must be willing to engage stakeholders and pursue solutions that promote peace and social cohesion.

He emphasized that his position on Kanu’s case has remained consistent over the years, insisting that dialogue and political engagement offer a more sustainable pathway to peace, particularly in the South-East.

The remarks have renewed discussions on the role of political solutions in addressing separatist agitations and other security challenges confronting the country, with many observers continuing to debate the best approach to achieving lasting peace and national unity.

Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has met with the party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and other senior party leaders in a closed-door meeting that lasted about three hours.

Dickson, who described Obi as his brother, colleague and partner in the New Nigerian Project, said the meeting focused on reviewing recent developments within the party and addressing issues that had raised concerns among stakeholders.

According to him, the discussions ended positively, with the leaders amicably resolving the issues and agreeing on how to handle future concerns in a way that will strengthen unity within the party.

The former governor stressed that he and Obi remain committed to the bigger political mission of winning elections for candidates of the party and rescuing Nigeria from what he described as the misgovernance of the APC-led government.

Dickson also appealed to members of the party to stop bickering, name-calling and internal divisions, urging them to focus on unity, cohesion and the shared goal of building a better future for Nigerians.

He added that Obi, himself and other party leaders would continue consultations and engagements to resolve concerns, strengthen internal cooperation and keep the party focused ahead of the 2027 general elections.
