41 players grades 7-12 signed up for Fall Ball this year with 38 actually participating. Players were divided up into three groups based on grade level. Grades 9-12 practiced primarily on Tuesdays and Thursdays while grades 7-8 went on Mondays and Wednesdays. Games/scrimmages were played mostly on weekends. Fundamentals and basic skills were emphasized rather than focusing on the number of actual games. Attendance at practices was excellent, and as a result most players experienced a noticeable improvement over the course of the Fall.

Three teams were formed with some players participating on more than one team. The older group or “Varsity” level was made up of students in grade 9-12. The “9th Grade/JV” level team included students in grades 7,8 and 9. The youngest group was mostly grades 7 and 8, especially those players just coming out of Little League, and playing on the “big field” for the first time. (“Rookies”) Complete rosters of all the teams are listed below.

It was difficult to schedule many games because few area schools have a Fall Ball program, but the “Varsity level” team managed to play 7 games, winning 6 and losing just one. The lone loss was to the “Pittsburgh Premier” travel team in the “Fall Brawl Tournament” at “No Off Season Sports” in Pittsburgh.

The 9th Grade/JV Team did very well, winning 7 games and losing only once in 8 contests. This strong showing by our ninth graders could bode well for our JV team next Spring. And the third team, made up largely of “Rookies”, showed significant improvement as they gradually made the adjustment to the 90 foot bases and longer throwing distances. Their participation this Fall should help them a lot when they move up to the next level. Although we were only able to schedule two actual games for this group, they were very competitive and were given a taste of what real baseball is all about. I am really looking forward to having them join us next summer for VFW Teener League Baseball.

Of course the main event of the Fall is always the “Fall Ball World Series”. This year The “Dawgs”, piloted by Hunter Rumsky, took down Elijah Quick’s “Big Red Machine” in five games, all of which were “hotly contested”. Good pitching and defense highlighted the series, which pleased the coaching staff. The fact that our own players divided up into two teams provided better competition than other area teams was very encouraging.

The unanimous feeling among members of our coaching staff was that this Fall was the most productive we have experienced in many years. Practices were fun and spirited thanks to great leadership from our seniors and excellent work by our coaches. Improvement in all phases of the game was noticeable, but the most obvious was defensively. Our “I-O”s (Infield-Outfields) were sharp, and players took great pride in them. One of our main goals for next season is to cut down on errors, of course, but also to improve our situational defense, and I feel we took some positive steps toward that this Fall. As always, pitching will be a priority this Winter, but opportunities for hitting improvement will be there also with the opening of the new batting cages. Beginning November 15th we will be renting the new facility three evenings a week from 5:00-7:00 PM. Our nights are Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday. We will start out with grades 9-12 and later on insert some times for 7th and 8th graders. Those evenings will be baseball only. We will not be sharing those times with softball, although they will have access at different times of course. I am excited about all the opportunities available to us this winter. Plans are to eventually open the batting cages at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15- 5:00. We are also planning to offer a weight program on those days as well. More details on all this as we get closer to Nov. 15th.

Many thanks to all players and coaches who participated, making it a very enjoyable and worthwhile Fall season. Complete rosters are listed below.

Hillsdale Hawks where are you? Hepburnia Twins where are you? How bout the Madera Pirates and the Ramey Rams? We know that many of you guys are still around. Curwensville Mohawks? Jims Raiders and the Cooper Bears? Most of the Bigler Bisons and Buster’s Brewers are still young enough to play. Not so sure about the Clearfield Colts or the New Millport Lumberjacks, but most of them are still kickin’. All these teams and many more are part of the rich baseball history of Clearfield County.

We are hoping to get many of these “Old Timers” together for a big reunion party (the second annual) on Saturday, Jan 28th at the Clearfield Fairgrounds. It will be in the Ag Building and festivities will begin around 6:00 PM.

Most of these teams were in the Mountain League, but there were several other leagues in existence back in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. (County League, Black Diamond League, Twilight League, and the JC League). Whatever team, or whatever league, we would love to have you come and help us celebrate the history of Clearfield Baseball!

Bring your team pictures, memorabilia, and especially your stories. There will be many told that evening, some of which may actually be true! Reservations can be made by mailing a check for $15 to Jay Siegel at 304 Daisy St. in Clearfield.

If you would like more information, please call Sid Lansberry at 814 762 4512 or Jay at 814 765 3214. Dinner, snacks, and “soft” drinks available. Spouses and guests are welcome.

October 11, Lawrence Twp Rec Park – The Gold Team outlasted the Green Team, 1-0, in a terrific pitcher’s duel, capturing the annual Fall Ball “World Series” in dramatic fashion. Both teams played errorless baseball, as starting pitchers Elijah Quick and Hunter Rumsky locked horns in the championship final. Quick threw a complete game three hit shutout for the Gold, while Rumsky and Anthony Lopez combined for a three hitter as well. The only run in the game came at the top of the first when Nate Owens scored on a Hayvin Bumbarger double. Cole bloom had two hits for the Green Team.

Team Green opened the series on October 4th with a 5-2 win, Rumsky getting the win over Quick. Bloom and Morgen Billotte scored two runs each with Bloom tripling and Billotte adding a double. Elijah helped his own cause with a triple. He and Braison Patrick scored the Gold runs. Hunter had a multi hit game with a double and single.

Game number two ended in an odd way with Team Gold bouncing back for a controversial 4-3 win. In a rare start, Cole Bloom took the mound for Green, pitching well through the first inning, striking out two of three batters. However, he ran into trouble in the second, surrendering four runs due to walks and a couple of costly errors. With Hayvin Bummy on the hill for Gold the score remained 4-0 until the fourth. Then Team Green erupted for 3 runs thanks to a booming triple off the bat of Morgen Billotte and a clutch hit by Matt Irvin. The score stood at 4-3 Gold going into the top of the 6th inning, but the Green Team came alive, exploding for 7 runs. At that point both umpires determined that it was too dark to continue. As both teams assembled at home plate to shake hands the Green players began celebrating. However, much to their surprise, The Gold team was declared the winner. They had not had a chance to bat in the bottom of the 6th so the score reverted back to the last complete inning. Final score: Gold 4- Green 3. And five innings is a complete game according to the rules of baseball. Tough pill to swallow! But the beauty of baseball is that there is always another game. Key hitters in the game were Elijah Quick with two hits and Cole Bloom with a double. Landon Brady contributed a key single in his team’s second inning rally.

So the final game was slated for Tuesday, Oct 11th. In the meantime we had a spot in the Pink Ribbon Rundown Tournament in Tarentum, PA. The High School Tournament, made up of Pittsburgh Area teams, provided some good competition for our guys, which was an excellent way to finish up a successful 2022 Fall season. On Saturday, we played tough in both games, dropping 6-5 and 7-6 contests. Making a good comeback to defeat Nextier by a 13-7 score on Sunday put us in the final game. In that game we ran up against an excellent Fox Chapel lefty and were defeated 6-1. But in the ceremony after the tournament we were declared runners up, and each player received a medal. It was a great experience, and next year we hope to enter more of those types of tournaments. Morgen Billotte was the only senior participating this Fall, so we are looking forward to next year. Several players hit well in the tournament. Hunter Rumsky (5), Cole Bloom (5), Morgen Billotte (4), Hayden Rumsky (4), Hayvin Bumbarger (3), Tony Lopez(2), and Braison Patrick (2) all had multiple hits.

This year marked the 23rd consecutive year for VFW Fall Ball, and it was another successful one. The program is for Clearfield Area School District students in grades 7-12, and there were 40 players participating. Players were divided up into two groups with Matt Peacock, Kevin Lykens, Damien Reinke, and Larry Spaid coaching the younger group. Sean Quick, David Patrick, Cory Hoover, Clair Wriglesworth, and Sid Lansberry handled the older group. The program is intended to be instructional with an emphasis on fundamentals with some intrasquad as well as outside competition. We thank the Clearfield VFW Post 1785 and Pennsylvania Grain Processing for their sponsorship. Many thanks to all the parents who helped with concessions, with Amanda Quick and Brandy Owens as the Organizers.

The complete roster: Brodee Owens, Jake Bloom, Rex Butler, Chase Foster, Zane Dunsmore, Landon Brady, Rolland Cummings, Jayce Brothers, Connor Peacock, Owen Lykens, Ty Magnuson, Xavier O’Link, Hunter Leigey, Elijah Gardner, Jacob Clark, Caleb Gibson, Avry Schenck, Colton Norris, JT Strischock, Brody Ryen, Noah Troxell, Matt Peace, Matthew Rowles, Brett Fletcher, Morgen Billotte, Hunter Rumsky, Cole Bloom. Elijah Quick, Anthony Lopez, Hayvin Bumbarger, Craig Mays, Matt Irvin, Xavier Lutz, Nate Owens, Noah Wriglesworth, Braison Patrick, Colton Bumbarger, Hayden Rumsky.

Many thanks to those parents who helped in the concession stand, with Amanda Quick and Brandy Owens serving as organizers.
