Poor sleep linked to rising cancer risk in under-50s

Findings add to growing efforts to explain why cancer rates are increasing among younger adults worldwide

Poor sleep may be fuelling the global rise in under-50s being diagnosed with cancer, two large studies suggest.

The number of younger people diagnosed with the disease has risen by almost 80% in three decades. Worldwide cases of early-onset cancer increased from 1.82m in 1990 to 3.26m in 2019, while cancer deaths among people in their 40s, 30s or younger rose by 27%.

‘My body never betrayed me’: kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart on her journey to bodybuilding

The activist opened up about her bodybuilding journey, personal growth and evolving relationship with her body and exercise

In April, Elizabeth Smart, 38, won first place in her category in the Wasatch Warrior bodybuilding competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. This was Smith’s fourth bodybuilding competition – her first had been at the same event a year earlier. But despite being a public figure, no one outside her friends and family knew she had been doing this. She competed under her married name, Elizabeth Gilmour, and hadn’t posted any content about her bodybuilding.

But after her win, a friend asked if she could post about Smart’s victory on Instagram.

Yassmin Abdel-Magied: ‘I can be someone new here; I can choose who I want to be’

The writer, broadcaster and activist on life in London, fitting in, and the perspective she gained after leaving Australia

Of course London has its problems, but mornings like this – bright sunshine, blue skies, the first properly hot day of the year – make a persuasive case for its being the greatest city in the world. Yassmin Abdel-Magied doesn’t need convincing.

She is a “big defender” of the English capital, her home since 2017, she tells me soon after we meet up on Brick Lane. “A lot of people love to hate on London, but I’m like no-no-no,” she says, laughingly finger-wagging. “I’m not having any of that around me.”

Fish prints and shapes have UK shoppers hooked this summer

From sardines and sprats to crabs, marine life-themed fashion and homewares are making a splash

Three years after declaring the death of florals, John Lewis has discovered a new print that is making a splash among shoppers. At the launch of its new high summer collection, the retailer said fish were quickly becoming its customers’ catch of the day.

From sardines and sprats to crustaceans including crabs, its latest haul across fashion and homeware is rich in fish prints and shapes. Sales of starfish-shaped earrings are up 300% month on month, while high demand for a silky blue skirt smothered in shoals of fish has resulted in a waiting list. In homeware, sales of a set of glass tumblers that stack together to form the shape of a fish are up 400%, while a “gluggle jug” – a ceramic pitcher shaped like a fish that makes a gurgling sound as the water is poured – is becoming an outdoor dining essential. Sales of versions from Wade Pottery are up 129% month on month.

Bright and breezy: Yotam Ottolenghi on simple summer entertaining

Summertime, and the cooking is easy – or at least it should be. This is the season to spend less time in the kitchen and more round the table. Here’s how

This year, 22 February happened twice for me. The first time, I was flying from Auckland to San Francisco, crossing the international date line somewhere over the Pacific. I’ve never fully understood what actually happens at the date line. There’s an explanation – something about a group of men in Washington deciding where one day would end and another begin, drawing a line down the middle of the ocean. Knowing that doesn’t make it feel less strange. You fall asleep, and when you wake up it’s still yesterday.

Groundhog Day, except the groundhog was me, in my plane seat, eating something that had been described on the menu as a “warm pasta dish”.

She criticizes capitalism - and also gives investing advice: ‘It’s better to participate than working until we die’

Amanda Holden encourages her students to build the kind of wealth historically reserved for white men

Amanda Holden is, in her words, an “ex-finance bro”. She landed a job in investment management right out of college and was earning a six-figure income by her early 20s. But after five years of “letting grown men scream at me about their money”, she desperately wanted out. So she committed to saving enough to quit and travel – and to leave the world of finance for good.

But a year later, Holden went back to the field, this time with a different mission. If her old career was, as she put it, “helping rich men get richer”, her second act would be using her hard-earned expertise to level the playing field. Holden is the founder of Invested Development, a blog-turned-online-course that encourages students (mostly women) to gain financial independence through investing. She says more than 25,000 people have taken her course.

A former union organizer on how to negotiate your debts down

An investing expert’s advice on financial advisers

A finance coach unpacks how she retired at 40

Invest in a broad index fund and don’t pay a money manager who will likely underperform the market.

Talk to your friends about money. It’s important for us to understand how we’re all making it and learn together.

Switch from your big bank to a community credit union to invest in your neighbors, not billionaires.

Give yourself a break and don’t let the system break you.

‘It’s the colour and artworks that make my house sing’

On her third renovation of the Victorian terrace she has lived in for 30 years, Ruth Evans chose a palette bursting with colour to backdrop her vast art collection

The children’s nursery rhyme I Can Sing a Rainbow swirls at the back of my mind as I wander the bright and beautiful rooms of art collector Ruth Evans’s north London home. Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue – they’re all here.

Evans (who is also the chair of Stop Scams UK) has lived in this Victorian terrace for 30 years and this is her third refurbishment. “Each renewal of the house marks a stage in my life. First it was a comfortable home in which to raise a child; then, in my 40s, it was about bringing my own sense of style to where I live; and now it’s the rest of my days: a culmination of everything I’ve learned over the years – the aesthetics, colour and art that make the house sing.”

‘A sense of trusting one’s self’: how to start building confidence

A lack of confidence can prevent us from trying new things or going after what we want – but it’s never too late to change our beliefs

When I was in middle school, my father told me 80% of how people see you is how you see yourself. This was terrible news at the time, because I was deep in the depths of puberty, self-loathing and figuring out how to part my hair.

Though he pulled that number out of thin air, in the intervening years I’ve found he was on to something – projecting confidence can sometimes be the key to success, professionally and personally. But how does one actually cultivate confidence? And what if our understanding of what confidence is skewed?

There is no universal definition of sex – and questioning what ‘counts’ can open the door to more fulfilling intimacy

I’m a sex educator. At the beginning of each of my classes, I ask a seemingly simple question: “What is sex?”

Some people might think it’s my job to answer that question. I do give accurate and inclusive information about sexual health, relationships and identity. But I don’t tell you what to do with that information or what value to assign that information.

‘Per my last email’: how email incivility can affect us at work

Although it might seem like a minor irritant, the consequences of email incivility can be far-reaching

Received a rude email at work? You’re not alone.

When I was weighing a move from full-time to freelance work, a terse email from a colleague – demanding I redo a task from scratch over a technicality – settled the matter instantly. I quit on the spot. Around the same time, thousands of US government workers received an email requiring them to justify their employment “with approx 5 bullets of what you accomplished this week” – or resign.

Clarissa Brincat is a freelance health and science journalist
Continue reading...

‘People should aim to get a variety’: the pros and cons of popular protein sources

From beans, lentils and tofu to chicken, pork, beef and fish, experts weigh the health benefits and potential drawbacks

Do you think you’re not getting enough protein? Debbie Fetter, an associate professor in nutrition at the University of California, Davis, likes to ask her students this same question. In a lecture hall of more than 500 people, “almost every hand shoots up”, she says.

Protein is top of mind for consumers. A 2024 survey of 3,000 Americans suggests most are trying to eat more of it, and research shows that foods labeled “more protein” are especially appealing to consumers.

Rowing through the fog: how to increase your tolerance for uncertainty

Journalist Simone Stolzoff in a new book explores why modern life makes not knowing harder – and how to learn to live with it

Simone Stolzoff describes himself as “naturally an uncertain person” inclined to rumination and self-doubt. This tendency benefits him in his work as a journalist, but can otherwise be a double-edged sword.

While working for a magazine in New York, Stolzoff was approached about a job at a design firm in San Francisco. Now, he laughs at how tortured he felt “having to decide between two attractive career paths”.

Female home owners report feeling stuck between men’s contradictory expectations – they are told to be independent, but not assume the breadwinner role

When Tiffany Tate put the wheels in motion to buy her first home, it felt like a win – until a date’s response stopped her cold.

“If you buy that house, what’s a guy going to do for you?” he said. It was just after their first date, and just before what would be their last.

‘Why do I need to change?’: the brides saying no to costly pre-wedding glow-ups

In the age of Botox, Ozempic and injectables, some women want to spend less on bridal beauty – and just be themselves

I got engaged last summer. Immediately, I started imagining how I would look at my wedding. The woman who appeared in my mind had different hair, different teeth and a completely different body than me. “I will transform my arms by the time of my wedding,” I kept thinking, though I did not take any action to transform my arms. It was inconceivable that I would show up to my wedding looking like myself.

Each social media app fed me wedding prep recommendations, including dieting (rebranded as “eating clean”), working out five times a week, regular laser treatments and facials, red light therapy, lymphatic drainage massage, teeth whitening, Russian manicures, eyelash extensions and multi-step hair routines. I saw an essay by a woman who wrote about spending $30,000 on her physical appearance. “In the lead-up to my wedding I treated my body like a design project and gave myself full [rein] to indulge in every and anything I had ever remotely considered,” she explained.

Very difficult and extremely cool: how to start doing pull-ups

Long considered an important milestone in one’s fitness journey, pull-ups build upper body strength and look impressive in the gym

The pull-up has long been seen as an important fitness metric. From 1966 to 2013, public middle and high school students in the US were required to do pull-ups as part of the presidential fitness test (an evaluation Donald Trump has considered reinstating). US Marine Corps members were long required to perform pull-ups as part of their regular physical fitness test, and prospective UK Royal Marines must complete a minimum of three to four pull-ups before they are eligible to join.

There is no definitive data on how many adults can perform a proper pull-up, but two things are clear: they are very difficult and look extremely cool.

Lat pulldowns.

Bent-over dumbbell rows.

Single-arm dumbbell rows.

Wide upright rows.

Shoulder shrugs.

The 23 best Mother’s Day gifts, according to moms, grandmas and one great-grandmother

Your mom will not tell you what she wants, but you can’t go wrong with these all-time favorites from mothers and grandmothers we spoke to

The 26 best Mother’s Day deals for when she says ‘don’t spend too much’

Sign up for the Filter US newsletter, your weekly guide to buying fewer, better things

“Getting to be a mom is the best Mother’s Day gift in and of itself.” We all know the deferential cliche moms trot out when asked about Mother’s Day gifts. But they’re lying. The real answer isn’t complicated or expensive: we just want to feel appreciated.

Mother’s Day is Sunday 10 May. To jog your inspiration, I asked fellow moms, grandmothers and even a great-grandmother from all walks of life about the best Mother’s Day gifts they’ve ever received. Think: personalized anything and everything, photos of mom and her favorite people (because she shouldn’t have to be relegated to behind the camera) and gadgets that make her day a little easier.

Best accessory deal:
Madewell The Essential Curve Shoulder Bag

Best clothing deal:
Skims Sleep Long Sleeve Button Up Set
Continue reading...

Smoky to sippable: 10 quality tequilas actually worth trying — plus expert tricks to spotting a good bottle

Whether you’re mixing margaritas or pouring a nightcap, the best tequila starts with a few small clues on the label

The best nonalcoholic wines and nonalcoholic beers in the US

Sign up for the Filter US newsletter, your weekly guide to buying fewer, better things

There’s a trick to spotting high-quality tequila. On the label of any bottle, look for these letters: NOM, which stand for Norma Oficial Mexicana. It means the tequila was produced at a government-registered distillery in Mexico (a stamp of approval that what’s in the bottle meets official standards).

If you also see “100% Blue Weber agave”, which indicates the bottle does not contain a mix of sugars, and a listed origin of the tequila heartland of Jalisco, you’re well on your way to choosing something good.

Blanco tequila is unaged, so it’s bright and great for margaritas.

An aged tequila, reposado (“rested”) spends several months in oak barrels, picking up a softer, rounder character that works well in cocktails or on its own.

Añejo is aged longer (typically between one and three years), resulting in deeper, richer flavors best suited for slow sipping to fully appreciate it.

The bartenders’ favorite: Fortaleza Blanco

The most affordable: Espolon Blanco
Continue reading...

Feeling off? Your secrets could be making you stressed

Researcher Valentina Bianchi says holding in information can take a mental toll. Here’s how to manage it

Tell us: do you use AI for fitness?

Usually nothing makes me happier than receiving a message that starts with “don’t share this, but …”. Yet as I played the voice note on my phone, my gleeful anticipation turned to dismay.

It was a juicy bit of gossip, but one I ultimately would have preferred not to know. Now I also had to conceal it from others.

I’m an adult.
Would you use cadaver fat for a boob job or butt lift? Some people already do

Cadaver fat from organ and tissue donors is being used for cosmetic procedures – and yup, it’s legal in the US, writes advice columnist Jessica DeFino

Hi Ugly,

I recently became aware of new cosmetic injectables derived from cadaver fat – as in, made of dead people.
Try small steps and set the bar low: how to find the meaning of life

Don’t treat it as a lofty quest, experts say. You can make each day feel more meaningful with humbler methods

What makes your life meaningful?

If you don’t really know, you’re far from alone. “We’re in the middle of a meaning crisis,” says Bill Burnett, executive director of the Life Design Lab at Stanford University.

Treating the underlying acne can help. But stress relief measures like meditation can too – and may depend on the severity

Hi Ugly,

I tend to get pimples, especially around my period. This is fine and normal.

There is no wrong way to journal, say experts, and putting pen to paper can help with mental health and clarify thoughts and feelings

How to start … anything: expert tips for trying something new

Humans have been jotting down their feelings and experiences for millennia. The earliest example of a diary is over 4,500 years old, written on papyrus by a mid-level official who helped in constructing the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Since then, other noteworthy diarists have included Lord Byron, Virginia Woolf, Albert Einstein, Audre Lorde and also me. (One guess as to which of those intellectual powerhouses recently journaled about getting a tummy ache after eating too many Swedish Fish.)

Start small, grow what you like and be realistic: how to start a vegetable garden

You don’t need a yard or balcony to get going. We asked experts for their advice on how to grow your food

Maybe it’s because I’ve lived in cities my whole life, but I can’t think of anything more luxurious than popping out to your garden and eating a fresh tomato straight from the vine. How decadent to enjoy its crisp, bright flavor and the smug satisfaction that you coaxed this food into being with your own hands.

But what does becoming a modern-day Demeter actually entail? What if you don’t have a yard, or even a balcony? And is it worth growing your own food when supermarkets exist?

Don’t stop at Duolingo, set realistic goals, balance skills: how to start learning a new language

Language experts say you should learn in the right order and shift to a growth mindset

If there’s one thing guaranteed to make a pop-culture character look cool and sophisticated, it’s being multilingual. Think James Bond, Yasmin from Industry or Scrooge McDuck.

Learning a new language not only makes you look cool – it also allows you to familiarize yourself with another culture, connect with new people and enjoy a wider variety of art and media. And it’s good for your brain. Studies have shown that learning a new language is associated with improved concentration, stronger communication skills, a more powerful memory and greater creativity.

Experts share tips on dressing as the most authentic version of yourself and avoiding the draw of the latest microtrends

How would you define your personal style? Is it cottagecore? Tomato girl? Whimsigoth? Quiet luxury? Maybe you don’t know what these terms mean (congratulations) and maybe you do (my condolences).

Like unwelcome nose hairs, new microtrends seem to sprout from the depths of social media every other week. In some ways, their pervasiveness has made style seem more accessible than ever. They reduce aesthetics to mathematical equations that you can solve by buying up a bunch of fast fashion. By the time these cheap, mass-produced items dissolve into microplastics – which they will, quickly – other aesthetic trends will have replaced them.

Party dresses to muddy boots: Kate Moss’s best fashion moments

With a new film about the model out this week, it’s the perfect excuse for some Mosstalgia

• Don’t get Fashion Statement delivered to your inbox? Sign up here

There are models, there are supermodels and then there is Kate Moss. Scouted aged 14 while waiting for a flight at New York’s JFK airport, the Londoner quickly went on to define the fashion aesthetic of the 90s. There have been countless magazine covers including 43 issues of British Vogue, scads of advertising campaigns spanning Calvin Klein to Chanel and Tom Ford and hundreds of catwalk moments including, most recently, a thong-baring appearance at Demna’s Gucci debut.

She’s been sung about by Pete Doherty and Playboi Carti, sculpted by Marc Quinn and painted by Chuck Close, Banksy and Lucian Freud. The latter is now the subject of a new film, Moss & Freud. Directed by James Lucas and executive produced by Moss, it explores the model’s friendship with the then – 80-year-old painter during 2002 when she sat, pregnant, for him. That lifesize naked portrait later sold for £3.5m. Ahead of the film’s release on Friday, our writers reflect on their Mossy memories from the nineties to now.

Jess Cartner-Morley on fashion: well, hello dolly shoes! The heels that are actually comfortable

This polished, proper shoe is about more style than sexiness. But work it right and you can have a lot of fun – without the risk of falling over

It seems wild to me now that I used to wear heels – and I mean high heels – every day. To work, and then out afterwards, 12, 15 hours straight. But at the time it felt entirely normal. The discomfort was one of those daily traumas you become desensitised to, the same way that rush-hour commuters don’t think twice about spending a train ride nose-deep in a stranger’s armpit. Blisters, heel tips bitten off by gratings, the odd sprained ankle, and constant taxi rides I could ill afford were all part of everyday life.

The stiletto’s long reign of terror began losing its hold in the streetwear-obsessed 2010s, and then along came lockdown and the comfort-first revolution. This has been the decade of the loafer and the party flat. My collection of needle-thin, 4-inch-plus Manolos, Louboutins and Choos now live in a display cabinet, the gorgeous but obsolete relics of an ancien régime.

Sali Hughes on beauty: Rejoice! The most beloved cleanser in history is back in the UK

Shu Uemura’s legendary Ultime8 face cleanser has made a return. Plus four more excellent options

I was recently in Japan with industry colleagues, many of whom were desperate to get to the shops to pick up Shu Uemura’s Ultime8, arguably the most beloved face cleanser in history among experts. I was delighted to break the news that they needn’t stockpile: Ultime8 is back in the UK this month, having been withdrawn along with the rest of Shu Uemura’s skincare and makeup lines back in 2017.

What can be so great about a 60-year-old cleanser? And why, when innovation is seen as key to a beauty brand’s success in the west, is it still the bestselling cleanser in all of Asia?

The devil owns Amazon: big tech has infiltrated the fashion world – will we see a revolt?

Anna Wintour has welcomed the Bezoses – and their patronage – with open arms. But after a controversial Met Gala, industry insiders are less enthusiastic

The press conference for the Met Costume Institute’s spring exhibition is always a stately affair, but this year it was giving “feudal lady addresses her serfs” or perhaps “Marie Antoinette during the last days of Versailles”. Here, among the spectacular marble sculptures of the art museum’s American wing, was a beaming Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who Anna Wintour introduced as a “force for joy”, before adding that “she and her husband, Jeff, have shown with this event that they genuinely, genuinely care about giving back”. Meanwhile, in the outside world, protests against the Bezoses’ involvement had been raging for days. The discrepancy between the word on the street and the deference within the glass-ceilinged room was head-spinning.

The Met Gala has recently become a magnet for anti-excess protests, but this was its most controversial yet, owing to the $10m patronage of its honorary co-chairs, centibillionaires Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos. It was not the first time Jeff Bezos bankrolled the gala – Amazon was its lead sponsor in 2012. But this year’s event came at a moment of soaring inequality, as Bezos’s personal wealth has mushroomed and his Donald Trump-appeasing decisions have made him less popular than ever with New York City’s left-leaning fashion and arts crowd.

So why all the fuss?

• Don’t get Fashion Statement delivered to your inbox? Sign up here

In the music video for her recent single Drop Dead, pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo saunters beguilingly through the ornate rooms of the Palace of Versailles, her eyes fixed on the camera. It is an all round soft-girl production, shot by Petra Collins who captures a hazy teenage aesthetic close to a carbon copy of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film, Marie Antoinette. But when the video aired last month, it was met with instant backlash online – not for her halting tourists from visiting the world heritage site for the day, but for Rodrigo’s Pinterest-inspired, pastel blue, babydoll ensemble.

The outfit – a floaty off-the-shoulder Chloé pre-fall 2026 babydoll top, styled with silky bloomers peeking out underneath and white pointelle knee socks – did not impress the keyboard warriors (likely, bots), who accused the singer of infantilising herself and invoking a ‘Lolita’ aesthetic. A few weeks later, Rodrigo donned a similar look (pictured top) on stage in Barcelona for Spotify’s Billions Club Live concert: a pink and white floral puff-sleeve babydoll top with matching ruffled bloomers from the small brand Génération78, offset by chunky black knee-high Dr Marten boots, equal parts soft and severe.

Louis Vuitton revives Keith Haring collaboration at lavish New York show

Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest collection pairs uptown elegance with downtown pop culture and street style

The allure of travelling in style helped make Louis Vuitton the biggest luxury house in the world, and no expense was spared for a trip to New York to showcase Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest collection.

The first model stepped on to the catwalk carrying a 100-year-old Louis Vuitton suitcase on which the artist Keith Haring had doodled several of his signature grooving stick figures in 1984. Prised from the Vuitton archives, the case heralded a collaboration with Haring’s estate that will include the classic LV Speedy handbag reissued with the artist’s dancing babies and barking dogs.

Jess Cartner-Morley on fashion: Posh Grandpa is fashion’s new main character

The latest character dressing trend may be a little silly but there’s an off-kilter pleasure in its mellow, vintage vibe

Welcome to the season of the Posh Grandpa, fashion’s newest main character. We’ve had Brat, we did Coastal Grandma, we loved Tomato Girl Summer. The world is pretty heavy right now, as you’ll have noticed, so any opportunity to lighten up is precious. The nonsense is the point.

Character dressing is style that makes you smile, but it’s not just that. There is infinitely more joy in these looks, however silly they are, than there is in aspiring to look rich and pretty, which is where the aesthetic centre of gravity of our culture swings back to again and again. The esoteric sides of fashion’s personality capture something important about style, which is that it needs a bit of friction to make it interesting. The pebble in the boot, the surprise to snag the eye. This is where the magic happens.

A margarita with an aromatic kick from south London’s coolest Caribbean eatery

Don’t be put off by the name, because this isn’t blow-your-head-off hot – the scotch bonnet infusion is quick, so the flavour is subtle and aromatic, rather than aggressive. The chilli-infused base would also work in other classic tequila cocktails, especially a spicy vampiro.

Nathaniel Mortley, chef/owner, 2210 by Natty Can Cook, London SE24
Continue reading...

Helen Goh’s recipe for gooseberry and almond pies | The sweet spot

Pleasingly sour gooseberries are easily tamed in a compote that’s baked in a pie filled with smooth almond cream

Gooseberries require a little patience. Firm, pale and stubbornly sour, they don’t offer the easy sweetness of other berries, but give them something warm and soft to lean against, and watch them shine. Almond cream feels a natural companion: gently sweet and tender, cushioning the sharpness without dulling it. Baked in muffin tins, these small pies feel informal yet generous, plus all the components can be made up to three days ahead and assembled just before baking.

Rachel Roddy’s recipe for tozzetti, AKA dipping biscuits with chocolate chips and orange

These crunchy ‘cupboard biscuits’ from central Italy are just made to be dunked, be that in a cuppa or in wine

Considering that the word tozzetto means an irregular and rounded piece, and is the diminutive of tozzo, which refers to something with excessive thickness and width in relation to its height, my tozzetti are not faithful. In fact, the proportions I gave them mean they are more Janet McTeer than Danny DeVito. Fortunately, their length doesn’t compromise their texture and Terry’s Chocolate Orange flavour, or their status as biscotti da credenza (cupboard biscuits).

Today’s recipe is adapted from one by the Neapolitan food writer Simona Mirto, who, since 2011, has built an exceptional website of recipes called TavolArteGusto. Her pie, savoury tart, cake and biscuit recipes and notes are particularly effective. It is from Simona that I learned tozzetti are found in central Italy, particularly in Lazio, with its epicentre in the Tuscia Viterbo area, as well as in Umbria and Abruzzo; and that they originated between the 18th and 19th centuries as cupboard biscuits, designed to use simple, easily available ingredients: flour, eggs, sugar (or honey, which gives a chewier texture) and dried fruit. I have adjusted her tozzetti quantities slightly, to take into account the addition of orange juice as well as the orange zest she suggests. The dough, while slightly sticky, should be firm enough to shape into loaves (the form is rather like small ciabatta), so you may need to add a little more flour (cautiously) or simply work with flour-dusted hands on a well-floured work surface.

Alice Zaslavsky’s parsnip and pear soup with cheesy toast tops – recipe

Parsnip at a clip! The root veg is affordable now and, paired with pears, the retro combo works wonders in Alice Zaslavsky’s midweek soup

Check out more Alice Zaslavsky recipes

Some vegetables are a Tuesday night no-brainer, while others feel like more of a Sunday schlep. Poor parsnip falls into the latter category, relegated to slow braises and weekend roasts.

Weather-resistant root veg such as parsnips, swedes and celeriac are affordable at this time of year but their fibrousness doesn’t yield as easily or quickly as tender, fair-weather veg.

‘It was too easy’: families ask how Kenneth Law enabled so many suicides

Bereaved relatives say they were ignored by authorities as they searched for answers over suicide forums and kits

Canadian man admits sending ‘suicide packets’ to hundreds of people around world

Monday would have been Aimee Walton’s 25th birthday. But in 2022, the lover of music and art from Southampton took her own life after being groomed by another user on an online forum that glorified and enabled suicide. On Friday, 3,500 miles away, the man who sold her a toxic substance pleaded guilty in a Canadian courtroom to his part in 14 other fatal poisonings.

Kenneth Law, 60, is linked to at least 131 deaths worldwide, after using a collection of digital storefronts to target vulnerable youth. Investigators in the province of Ontario say Law shipped more than 1,200 packages – many containing a toxic substance – from his local post office to people in more than 40 countries; the vast majority went to the United Kingdom and the United States.

So dumb it just might work: can these dumbphone evangelists convince you to dump smartphones?

As part of a growing anti-tech movement, startup dumb.co is pushing flip phones as a way for young people to find ‘social and spiritual freedom’

“They aren’t as dumb as they look,” our facilitator said, referring to the dark gray flip phone in his hand. He just as easily could have been talking about us, the 28 New York residents before him who had signed up to use the device for the entire month of March. He explained that the relic was loaded with WhatsApp, iMessage, Google Maps, Uber, Microsoft 2FA – nothing like my seventh-grade flip phone.

We each had paid $75 to participate in Month Offline, or MO, a program that challenged us to swear off our smartphones entirely. Another $25 went to dumb.co, the company behind MO, for the so-called dumbphones we would use as we navigated daily life.

Indigenous designers hold independent runway ahead of Australian fashion week – in pictures

On Sunday night in Sydney, on the eve of Australian fashion week, First Nations Fashion and Design (FNFD) staged their first runway show in four years. Titled Reclamation, the collective featured the work of six Indigenous brands and designers with an all-Indigenous cast of models, and closed with performances from rapper Barkaa and poet Luke Currie-Richardson. Announcing their plan to become an annual runway platform for Indigenous designers – outside of the industry’s formal structures – the FNFD founder, Grace Lillian Lee said: ‘Reclamation was never designed to fit comfortably within the existing fashion system. It was designed to challenge it, expand it, and ensure that our voices are not invited in temporarily, but embedded permanently within the future of Australian fashion’

The Australians dressing pop’s biggest stars – from Taylor Swift to Beyoncé to Shakira
