In the United States, about 25% of women were sexually abused as children. Child sexually abuse may cause physical syptoms of trauma such as anxiety, triggers, and difficultly sleeping. It may even lead to feelings such as fear or shame.

In this video, Betsy Kanarowski explains resources for child sexual abuse survivors. Betsy is the director of clinical services at Saprea. With the right tools, healing is possible for CSA survivors. Saprea's clinical experts have designed tools and practices to guide survivors of CSA on their healing journey. Saprea offers resources in person and online to help all those who have been affected by child sexual abuse.

Saprea exists to liberate individuals from child sexual abuse and its lasting effects. Online resources provide education on how trauma affects the body and brain, symptoms common to CSA survivors and healing practices and strategies. These resources can be found at saprea.org. Denise is a survivor of child sexual abuse. As she grew into adulthood, getting married and having children, she assumed that the abuse she had experienced was no longer affecting her. However, her life began to spiral until she learned about the Saprea Retreat. There, she found a love for yoga and incorporated it into her healing journey.

The Saprea Retreat, for women who were sexually abused as children or teens, is a clinically informed 4-day in-person experience followed by a self-guided online course. The retreat teaches about trauma’s impacts, provides opportunities to apply healing tools, and builds community among survivors. The in-person experience lays a foundation for healing that the online course builds on for deeper understanding and application.

Trauma victims present a number of characteristics that result from their trauma. This includes PTSD with all its plethora of symptoms, as well as the effects of gaslighting and trauma bonding. Understanding these characteristics is critical to understanding how victims view the world and interact with others, including their lawyers. It is also important because victims of trauma will present cognitive, logistical, and communication challenges. However, as attorney Maria-Vittoria Carminati notes in this important program, ignoring, not understanding, or mishandling these issues can result in lawyers failing in their duty of competence.

Childhood sexual abuse is a profound yet under-acknowledged issue in the United States, affecting an estimated one in every five children before their 18th birthday. This distressing statistic reflects a reality where 20% of Americans* could be dealing with lasting trauma from such abuse, fundamentally altering their lives, and in turn, the lives of those around them. Survivors often grapple with deep shame and diminished self-worth that manifest in their lives in devastating ways, such as addiction, broken relationships, isolation, and violence. Unfortunately, the common answer for those struggling is to address these visible symptoms, rather than the root causes of their trauma.

Saprea, a nonprofit organization based in Utah, offers a unique approach to healing for survivors. Saprea's intervention, the Saprea Retreat, is a week-long program tailored specifically for adult women who were sexually abused as children. This retreat creates a healing environment in which peers with shared lived experience come together as a community to face and heal from their pasts: because abuse happens in isolation, but healing happens in community.

The retreats are designed not only to confront the trauma directly but also to build a community that envelopes survivors in support. By focusing on creating new, healthier neural pathways through various therapeutic techniques, Saprea empowers participants to reshape their responses to trauma triggers. This deeply effective approach underscores the necessity of addressing trauma within a supportive community, highlighting that healing, much like trauma, happens in the context of relationships. Saprea's model not only aids survivors in immediate recovery but also in building skills and connections that support long-term wellbeing — in turn breaking the cycles of abuse that are so inherent in communities across the country.

This video is for those of you who had childhood trauma, who perhaps carry some shame because you had mixed and complicated feelings about that abuse. And what I mean by that is you were groomed, and maybe you liked or initiated some aspects of the situation, and now you perhaps feel ashamed, because you feel confused about whether you were a victim or a willing participant. This can directly contribute to PTSD and CPTSD.

I think our collective silence about this topic leaves survivors of abuse feeling like they’re the only one who felt confused about their part in the abuse. That leads to shame that leaves them thinking that they’re broken, bad, or deviant. And CPTSD can impact people for a lifetime.

By the end of this video you’ll be able to understand how the complicated nature of abuse and trauma leads to toxic shame, and also, how to work through that.

Most CSA happens in a much more devious, manipulative way and I would say, is more harmful to your long-term self-esteem because you believe you were complicit. The abuser is usually a family member or friend, your parents may know and trust this person, they might be an authority figure. This can create a confusing mix of feelings, where love or trust coexists with feelings of betrayal and harm.

So let me be clear, even if you liked or initiated some aspect of the abuse, that is not a sign that it wasn’t abuse. Children cannot consent, and are never complicit in abuse. Kids just simply don’t have, they shouldn’t have the background, and context to really understand what is going on.
