WhatsApp Warns Users of Spyware Attack

BBC reports Oracle began significant job cuts on Tuesday. On LinkedIn a senior manager posted the cuts included “senior engineers, architects, operations leaders, program managers, and technical specialists”. Another employee told the BBC the cuts include approximately 10,000 jobs. Reuters reports Oracle is laying off 491 remote employees in the Seattle and Washington state offices, effective June 1st, according to a filed notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. Oracle declined to respond to the BBC’s request for comment.

Gmail, which actually, for real, launched 22 years ago on April 1st, 2004, opened the ability to change a Google account username to all users in the US. The change was announced in 2025 and began a gradual rollout in December. User names can be changed only once every 12 months and all existing emails will still be available, with the former email address remaining active and able to receive emails. Both emails will work as a Google sign in and all data in Photos and Drive, and other Google services, also remain accessible.

Apple is pushing a security update to iPhones on iOS 18 to protect users against attackers using the DarkSword takeover tool, which can infect a phone by visiting any websites with infected code. The update allows users to remain on iOS 18, not forcing any upgrades to the most recent iOS the device can run, as is usually standard. Wired reports that, as of February, up to a quarter of all iPhone users remain on iOS 18, noting many are holding out due to distaste of the liquid glass UI. Users on the latest version of iOS are already protected.

The Wall Street Journal reports Anthropic is attempting to control the spread of the leaked Claude Code source code by issuing copyright takedown requests, covering over 8,000 available copies. On Tuesday an Anthropic spokesperson told Axios, “Earlier today, a Claude Code release included some internal source code. No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed” and “This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again.”

On Wednesday, parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, announced a new rollout of AI video model Seedance, called Seedance 2.0, with a third-party partner strengthening the model’s intellectual property rights protection. Seedance’s initial release brought complaints and a cease-and-desist from the Motion Picture Association, with the viral Tom Cruise battling Brad Pitt video drawing lots of attention to the model. All output will contain visible and embedded watermarks, with ByteDance introducing a way to detect model created content even if altered off-platform. Seedance 2.0 will be available in editing app CapCut for paid users in Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. No timeline currently available for the US and India.

Bloomberg reports Google is developing a screenless fitness band to compete with other screenless offerings from Whoop Inc and Oura Health. The band is expected to release under the Fitbit brand later in 2026. Basic features will be accessible for free with advanced features requiring a subscription. Google will also charge for the device, unlike Whoop’s model, which includes the hardware with a subscription.

On Wednesday, Samsung released a free Android app called ‘Hearapy’, claiming it can reduce the effects of motion sickness with sound. The app plays a low 100Hz sine wave for one minute to stimulate part of the ear responsible for balance, which Samsung says should relieve symptoms like nausea for up to two hours. The sound can be replayed as needed, though any relief is not guaranteed. In 2025 Japan’s Nagoya University published research showing specific sound wavelengths helped reduce discomfort for those suffering from motion sickness. The app’s effectiveness may vary depending on headphone quality; Samsung recommends using the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro.

SpaceX Starlink Satellite Breakup Under Investigation

SpaceX lost contact with Starlink satellite 34343 on March 29 due to an “unspecified anomaly” at 348 miles altitude. At the Atmosphere conference over the weekend, social networking service Bluesky announced an app called Attie, an AI assistant able to create custom Bluesky feeds using natural language. Users can login with their Bluesky credentials or credentials from other AT protocol apps and ask Attie to create a feed like “posts about folklore, mythology, and traditional music, especially Celtic traditions.” These new feeds will only be available within the app to start. In the future, the app plans to enable Attie users to vibe code their own social media apps and create tools for others. Atmosphere conference attendees will be the initial beta testers for the new app, with no date given for a wider rollout, but there is a signup for the waitlist at attie.ai.

The Financial Times reports recruiters at major companies are making attempts to prevent applicants from using AI during interviews. Global vice-president for talent acquisition at L’Oréal Michael Kienle shared his team of recruiters experienced candidates merely reading AI-generated answers to questions. Other companies detected fully AI avatars used instead of the actual person in interviews. Deel, an HR platform, published in their February data that over 40% of employers have extended probation periods in order to properly assess potential employee ‘true’ skills and knowledge. In 2025 The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants began requiring candidates to take assessments in person, outside of extenuating circumstances, in order to reduce AI cheating in exams. Some employers share AI will or may still be used to filter applications.

Business Insider reports the wait times for getting apps approved for the Apple App Store are getting longer due to the proliferation of vibe coded app submissions. According to Sensor Tower, the number of iOS apps released in the US grew 54.8% year-over-year, the highest in previous four years. Business Insider interviewed a vibe coder saying the store is “overloaded with people like me submitting tons of apps” and it taking up to six weeks to get the app live. The Apple App Store submission process involves actual human reviewers. There is a mechanism to request expedited reviews, but that’s normally intended for updates with critical bug and security fixes.

Last week Motorola’s UK X account posted that Razr Fold pre-orders begin in “15 days”, which would land on April 11th. The image shares the FIFA-edition of the Razr Fold, promising an “exclusive experience” for the World Cup. The Motorola Razr Fold will cost €1,999 in Europe (approximately $2,289 USD) with the Motorola Pen Ultra included.

The Austrian government will introduce legislation to ban social media for kids under 14 years old, with the bill expected to be introduced sometime in June. Vice chancellor and leader of the Social Democratic Party of Austria Andreas Babler said this bill includes the new age restriction, clear rules for social media platforms, as well as improved media literacy, though no further details are public at this stage. Australia and Indonesia implemented social media bans for youths while Spain, the UK, and Denmark are planning similar measures.

Meta is testing a new subscription service called Instagram Plus. The test is ongoing with a small subset of users in various markets, including Mexico and the Philippines, and not widely available at this time. On X, social media analyst Matt Navarra shared the feature list: including multiple story audiences, extended story expiration, more detailed story insights, a searchable story viewer list, and the ability to send super hearts to stories. This is all similar to the existing subscription service Snapchat+.

Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly reached a $2.75 billion deal with Hong Kong-based Insilico Medicine to bring drugs developed with AI to the global market. Insilico has developed over 28 drugs with its generative AI tools, half of which are currently in a clinical testing stage. Founder and CEO of Insilico Alex Zhavoronkov told CNBC that AI reduces research time and can synthesize molecules more quickly than existing traditional methods.

Samsung is launching an AI Wine Refrigerator as part of its premium Infinite line. The included AI Wine Manager functions through a top-mounted camera to detect when bottles are added or removed, scanning the label and logging details like the name, vintage, and grape variety for the SmartThings app. The refrigerator can hold up to 101 bottles with three cooling zones, has UV blocking glass, and a low-vibration compressor. It also costs 6,499,000 won, approximately $4,300 USD.

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced on X it would discontinue the generative video app Sora. The statement does not provide a timeline for the closure of the app and API, and the company will share details on those and how users should preserve work “soon”. Three months ago OpenAI signed a three-year licensing agreement with Disney, which would have enabled app users to generate video with over 200 Disney characters. Disney has terminated the partnership, including plans to stake $1 billion in OpenAI. A Disney rep told Variety, “we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere […] and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”

Following the iOS update 26.4, pushed on Wednesday, iPhone users in the UK will be prompted to verify their age. Options include using a credit card stored in the digital wallet and providing a photo of a driver’s license or passport. It is also possible for Apple to confirm a user is over 18 years old using the length of time a digital account has been active. Those choosing not to verify or are unable to prove they are 18+ face web browsing restrictions and “communication safety” checks in messages and FaceTime calls, aiming to detect nude images and videos. Though app stores and mobile operating systems are not currently covered by the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA), Ofcom says implementation of the age check is “a real win for children and families”. Apple did not respond to Ars Technica’s request for comment.

On Wednesday, the US Supreme Court released a unanimous opinion that a major ISP cannot be held liable for piracy of thousands of songs. Justice Clarence Thomas noted a provider would only be liable in select circumstances, like if a service was actively encouraging infringement. In 2018 music labels sued Cox Communications for failing to cut off subscribers flagged for illegal downloading, asking for Cox to be legally responsible, thereby owing over a billion dollars in damages. In 2019 a jury found Cox liable and awarded Sony the $1 billion in damages. The company’s appeal failed as the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld the finding. A new trial vacated the damages, saying Cox did not profit from subscribers downloading and distributing copyrighted songs.

On Tuesday a New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties, finding the company misled users about platform safety and enabled harms including child sexual exploitation (CSAM). The lawsuit was filed in December 2023 following a two-year Guardian investigation into child sex trafficking on Facebook and Instagram; the report then cited repeatedly in the complaint. Meta was ordered to pay the maximum penalty under New Mexico’s consumer protection laws, $5,000 per violation, leading to the $375 million total. Meta will appeal the ruling.

On Tuesday, Baltimore’s mayor and city council filed sued against xAI, alleging the Grok chatbot violates consumer protections laws with the generation of non-consensual sexualized images. The suit argues Grok was deceptively marketed by xAI as a general purpose AI assistant and failed to disclose risks, limitations, and exposure to harm on the platform. The suit claims jurisdiction as xAI advertises and operates within the city. xAI has yet to comment.

Beginning summer 2026, Apple will allow ads within Apple Maps, starting in the US and Canada. Ads will be available to businesses with a physical location and business listing on Apple Maps. Only one ad will be shown in Maps search results, clearly marked as an ad, and show a blue halo around the map pin. Apple says the ads will maintain user privacy by not associating ad interactions with the user’s account and isn’t shared with third-parties. As previously reported by Bloomberg, ad placement will operate with an auction-based bidding system. Google Maps included ads in the app since 2008.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney laid off over a thousand staff on Tuesday, citing a downturn in active players in Fortnite, while also saying this move is not related to AI. In a blog post Sweeney said the layoff, combined with cost-savings in marketing, contracting, and closing some open roles, will save over $500 million dollars. Fortnite will also remove the Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage modes. Earlier in March Epic raised the price of V-Bucks, claiming it was necessary to “help pay the bills”.

SK Hynix Places Massive EUV Order

Zoox Expands Robotaxi Service

On Monday, the Australian government issued formal “expectations” for data center and AI infrastructure developers wanting to operate within the country. The five expectations include handling their own electricity generation capacity with clean energy and paying for energy infrastructure and transmission costs, sustainable and efficient water usage, and investment in the Australian workforce and skills. The expectations also state access must be enabled for ‘Australian start-ups, innovative small businesses, researchers and not-for-profits on favourable terms’ as well as prioritizing Australia’s national security and data sovereignty.

Reuters reports the European Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services (ACT) called on EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera to designate makers of smart TVs as ‘gatekeepers’ under the Digital Markets Act, using data from a 2025 study. Amazon’s Fire OS and Samsung’s Tizen OS were specifically named as examples as Android TV increased market share from 16% to 23% from 2019 to 2024. In the letter the broadcasters said, “It is crucial that the Commission designate major TV operating systems ​as gatekeepers and ensure adequate oversight to guarantee fairness and contestability”. The letter further notes smart TVs should be included under the DMA even if they do not meet the standard requirements of 45 million monthly active users and 75 billion euros ($87 ​billion USD) market capitalization.

Bloomberg reports the deal between Sony and Chinese TCL Electronics Holding Ltd. is nearly complete; sources claiming it may be valued around $1 billion and an announcement will be made as soon as the end of March. Sony and TCL announced their intentions to set up a joint venture in January and a memorandum of understanding would have Sony holding 49% and TCL 51%.

On Sunday, Tencent launched a tool integrating an AI OpenClaw agent within WeChat. The new ClawBot tool appears as a WeChat contact, connecting users directly with OpenClaw, able to send and receive comments with the AI agent in the standard messaging interface. Earlier in March, Tencent launched its own AI agent suite with QClaw for individual users, Lighthouse for developers, and WorkBuddy for enterprises.

The government of Mexico City launched a chatbot on WhatsApp to aid tourists during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remain active beyond the event. The chatbot, named Xoli (read:sho-lee), provides info and answers questions in English or Spanish regarding tourism, cultural offerings, gastronomy, mobility, and other services. Xoli is available now, operating 24/7.

Digital Trends reports a recent build of Google Translate shows an AI-powered “Practice” mode. The mode will help users improve their pronunciation by listening to native speakers’ pronunciations and submitting their own attempts, with AI analyzing and grading the attempt. It will also suggest ways to improve, including providing a phonetic breakdown of words to simplify the process. The feature is likely to roll out in stages with select language pairs like English and Spanish.

Motorsports simulator iRacing will be available on Apple Vision Pro this spring through a collaboration with Apple and NVIDIA. iRacing, which features LIDAR-scanned real-world tracks and cars and partners with various racing organizations, will launch alongside visionOS 26.4 and NVIDIA’s CloudXR 6.0 streaming platform. iRacing, being a hardcore sim, is generally limited to a cockpit view and on Apple Vision Pro racers will be able to view their physical hands on the wheel, aiming to replicate the same experience as in a racing cockpit.

Game developer Pearl Abyss launched a “comprehensive” audit of in-game assets after gamers discovered a bunch of AI-generated art in the newly released open world game Crimson Desert. The AI art was not originally disclosed as required by Steam’s AI Content policy, only added after being called out. In a statement the Korean company said, “We sincerely apologize for these oversights” and the AI assets will be replaced in future patches. Crimson Desert’s Steam launch had nearly 250,000 players and the Meta Critic score sits at 78. The next patch is expected to focus on correcting complicated controls. In the meantime, Pearl Abyss suggests using a controller for Crimson Desert.

Nintendo Switch 2 to Feature Replaceable Battery

Anthropic Rejects Pentagon “Supply-Chain Risk” Claims

Anthropic executives said Claude AI cannot be manipulated once deployed by the U.S. military, rejecting Pentagon claims that the company could disrupt operations during war. The DoD labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk, barring its software and prompting canceled contracts. Anthropic sued to challenge the ban and offered assurances it has no “kill switch,” cannot access military prompts, and will not veto operational decisions. A federal hearing is set for March 24.

Ohio to Host 10-Gigawatt AI Data Center

The DOE announced a public-private project at the decommissioned Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Ohio, converting it into the “PORTS Technology Campus” with a 10-gigawatt data center and up to 10 gigawatts of new power, mostly natural gas. SoftBank and AEP Ohio will build the infrastructure with $33.3 billion in Japanese funding. Construction starts this year, supporting AI research, national security, excess power fed to the grid, and thousands of jobs.
