If one has done something remarkable for their country, for history or for humanity in general, one may get the honor of leaving their mark on money as well. It is the honor of that person which warrants the depiction of their face on their currency. Money can vanish, can rot underground and turn to dust but the individuals depicted on money remain in our memory and perpetuity. That is the difference. The wisdom of a good politician lies precisely in seeing the difference between the temporal and the eternal. Honor does not rely on money but rather money relies on honor.

A Ukrainian artist has used 5,000 spent cartridge cases to create a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin titled A Face Of War. The work by Daria Marchenko, 33, is a remarkably realistic and politically tinged depiction of Putin in a dark suit and red tie. It stands more than 2 meters tall and dominates the artist's studio apartment. "Sleeping in the same room with him was a bit scary at first," Marchenko said. "But I got used to it.""The war is full of human lives, which are like cartridge cases," she explained. "If people remember this, if people who came to Ukrainian lands with aggression remember this, war will not begin." Marchenko says she uses light on the portrait to accentuate Putin‘s character and emotions."Depending on the lighting he gets accents on the cheekbones or eyes. Depending on the light, the emotions in the eyes change. This work has different facial expressions, different characters." The cartridge cases, mostly from Kalashnikov rifles, were collected by volunteers from sites near Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine and other battlefields in the Donbas region.

On 25 August, the M17 gallery hosted a public presentation of the mosaic exhibit, “Faces of War.” Although it was displayed in only one studio, images of the exhibit were broadcast by nearly every international media outlet and published in over 2,000 publications such as the Guardian, Herald, Times and the Wall Street Journal. Daria Marchenko, the author of “Faces of War,” exposes the brutality and hypocrisy of the Kremlin in order to show the international community the architect of the occupation of eastern parts of Ukraine. The date of the presentation marks the anniversary of the Russian open military invasion that culminated in the Ilovaisk tragedy.

Visitors had to enter the exhibition hall alone. While heading down a long corridor surrounded by barbed wire and dark-red lighting, visitors could experience the multi-faceted nature of war depicted in the ever-changing portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The unique mosaic exhibit is composed of 5,000 shells brought from the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) area in Ukraine’s East. The portrait of Russia’s authoritarian leader changes colors and facial expressions depending on the angle of lighting. However, even the rich and emotional amplitude of the portrait does not distract the viewer from the terrible truth manifested in the deadly metal material from which the work was created...

The artwork “The Brain of War” (sculpture is a grenade with attached photo lenses) is the part of representation for dictate power and its instruments of information war propaganda, which nowadays transfers in modern society to global international level with the help of mass media, via possible propaganda trails under dictate`s control, mostly playing upon patriotic feelings of people and thus involving them in war.
