To coin a frame: A portrait of Trump, made from pennies CNN: President Donald Trump became famous as financial success incarnate. Now, there's a seven-foot-tall portrait of the President literally made from money. Green and his partner, Daria Marchenko, recently made headlines with their portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin made from bullet shells used in the Ukraine conflict. That portrait recently went on display in New York as part of an exhibition called "The Five Elements of War." Green told CNN the idea for the Trump portrait was sparked in August, when the US President thanked Putin for expelling US diplomats, saying he had saved America a lot of money. He also talked about saving America money when he pulled out of the Paris climate accord. "He only talks about money. We have bigger problems like nuclear war and climate change. To me, it looks like he is rich but he is cheap," Green said. The portrait of Trump took three months to make -- half the time of the Putin portrait -- as the coins were easier to work with than bullet shells. They used heat to bring out varying degrees of color in the coins, mixed with paint for Trump's famous hair. They used casino chips for his jacket, a reflection of Trump's past as a casino magnate -- and his penchant for being a risk-taker. Reaction to the portrait has been mixed. The Ukraine Institute in New York that is currently hosting the "Five Elements of War" exhibition said it is refusing to display the Trump portrait for fear of political reprisal. Other galleries have had a similar response, the duo said. They plan to showcase both portraits of Putin and Trump in an exhibition in Las Vegas in May. Asked if they would sell their portrait of Trump to the man himself, Daria says: "If he would be so brave to look at himself from different angles ... that would be progress."

Одночасно з виступом Володимира Путіна у Нью-Йорку на Генасамблеї ООН – у столиці США – Вашингтоні відкрилася виставка «Обличчя війни». В експозиції всього одна картина – викладене з близько п’яти тисяч різнокаліберних гільз обличчя Володимира Путіна.

Усі гільзи були привезені художницею Дарією Марченко із зони АТО. Сама художниця визнає, що це не лише її мистецьке, а й політичне висловлювання. Вона переконана, що пропагандистським заявам російського диктатора треба в тому числі протистояти сміливими арт-проектами. Аби показ у Вашингтоні став можливим - художниці довелося отримати дозвільні документи на ввіз до США такого незвичайного портрету з гільз.

Його авторка Дарія Марченко пригадує: ідея використовувати гільзи з’явилася у неї після того, як її хлопець приніс гільзи з Майдану.

Об этом в эфире телеканала «112 Украина» рассказала соавтор картины Дарья Марченко.

«Мы использовали материалы друзей, которые пошли на фронт, а сама идея возникла во время Майдана. У нас фурор. У нас фурор был в Чикаго, у нас фурор в Нью Йорке. Все все понимают, объяснять… Объяснений еще хотят, но и без объяснений люди шокированы, люди под впечатлением», – сказала она.

По ее словам, идея создания картины появилась у активиста Майдана – украинского художника Даниэля Грина. Картина выполнена из гильз, собранных на Донбассе украинскими военными, и называется «Лицо войны».

A young Ukrainian artist has created a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin with bullet casings. The exhibit, called the "Face of War," opened last week in Washington, D.C. The artist is 33-year-old Daria Marchenko. She used 5,000 empty shell casings that came from the frontline of war in eastern Ukraine. Ms. Marchenko's exhibit consists of only picture – the face of Mr. Putin. She said she got the idea when her boyfriend brought her a handful of shells. Those bullet shells came from the EuroMaidan protests in Kyiv.

The artist said her work is a sign of respect to her country's soldiers. "The energy of this project is very dark. I mean, you cannot be cheerful while doing projects like that. But I was not able to stop it, either. This is my sign of respect for all of those Ukrainian soldiers, thanks to whom I still live in the capital of my country, Kyiv, without the war."

Exhibit organizers used razor wire to surround the portrait. Ms. Marchenko also uses light to bring life to her portrait. As the lighting changes, Mr. Putin's facial expression seems to change, too. His look may go from excited to afraid to even evil. Ms. Marchenko first presented her project to the public this summer. Since then, she has received letters from people in Algeria, the Netherlands, Syria, and Russia. The artist said she hopes the Russian president finds out about the exhibit, and perhaps changes his own behavior. "I think there is no dictator in the world who will tell you honestly what kind of thoughts he has when he is alone in the cold night. But I believe they can feel what kind of future is waiting for them."

Parliamo del lavoro dell'artista ucraina Dariya Marchenko, chee ha realizzato un ritratto del presidente russo Vladimir Putin utilizzando ben 5mila cartucce raccolte nelle zone di conflitto dell'Ucraina orientale. “Per me il volto della guerra è quello di Putin, perché non fa altro che dare ordini e diffondere menzogne”, spiega Dariya. “Ma con l'aiuto di questa immagine voglio far capire che le persone vedono qual è la realtà delle cose. On 25 August, the M17 gallery hosted a public presentation of the mosaic exhibit, “Faces of War.” Although it was displayed in only one studio, images of the exhibit were broadcast by nearly every international media outlet and published in over 2,000 publications such as the Guardian, Herald, Times and the Wall Street Journal. Daria Marchenko, the author of “Faces of War,” exposes the brutality and hypocrisy of the Kremlin in order to show the international community the architect of the occupation of eastern parts of Ukraine. The date of the presentation marks the anniversary of the Russian open military invasion that culminated in the Ilovaisk tragedy.

Visitors had to enter the exhibition hall alone. While heading down a long corridor surrounded by barbed wire and dark-red lighting, visitors could experience the multi-faceted nature of war depicted in the ever-changing portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The unique mosaic exhibit is composed of 5,000 shells brought from the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) area in Ukraine’s East. The portrait of Russia’s authoritarian leader changes colors and facial expressions depending on the angle of lighting. However, even the rich and emotional amplitude of the portrait does not distract the viewer from the terrible truth manifested in the deadly metal material from which the work was created...
